Parole knockback By LACHLAN MOORHEAD THE family of Pakenham mum Maddison Murphy-West has been given a last-minute reprieve after a suspect in the 20-year-old’s death was refused parole just as he was due for release. Maddy’s aunt Kelly took to Facebook on Monday to declare she’d been “informed“ Troy Boothey had his parole revoked just as he was set to walk free from prison this week. Boothey, Maddy’s former partner and the father of their three-year-old son, has been in jail since 2014 for a road-rage attack in which he smashed a bus driver’s side window with a baseball bat. Maddy’s family was unsure why Boothey’s release date was delayed but it’s believed he is now scheduled to leave jail in March. “We have just been informed that his parole has been revoked and denied till his release date,” Kelly posted on Facebook. “Thank you to whoever is responsible. It’s not long till then, but at least he is serving his time.” Maddy was found dead at her Ahern Road home in Pakenham more than two years ago, on 23 October, 2013, but noone has been charged over the incident. Homicide detectives continue to investigate her death. In 2014 an annual rally against domestic violence was organised in Maddy’s honour. Streets of some confusion By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM A PAKENHAM woman says more consideration should be taken when naming streets, after it took almost a month to deliver an overnight parcel. Beth Clisby has praised local post office staff for their commitment to customer service, but believes something should be done to prevent the problem happening in the future. On 16 December, Beth sent a parcel from the Officer Post Office to a suburb of Brisbane. Carrying birthday presents for a friend who is in his fifth year of chemo and has recently entered palliative care, she selected the express post option with the guarantee that the parcel would be delivered in one day. The gifts did not arrive until last Monday 11 January and only thanks to the intervention of the staff at Officer, who intercepted the parcel and resent it directly to the Sorting Office in Brisbane who then readdressed it and ensured it was delivered to the correct address. Beth has a speech impairment, which she says can sometimes cause issues on the phone. She had tried to resolve the issue on the phone and found that Australia Post call centre kept hanging up, however she had

only the highest praise for the staff in Officer. “Being wheelchair bound, it’s not easy to keep visiting the Post Office to chase up the problem,” she said. “Without the intervention of the Postmaster at Officer Post Office for which I am truly grateful, I doubt the particle would have ever got delivered.” Beth believes confusion arises when there are too many similarly named streets in each suburb - an issue she says may also cause issues for emergency services personnel. “It is they who give the go ahead for street names in any suburb or town. They allow similar names and same street names in the same or adjacent suburbs,” she said. “In decades past, those with severe problems caused by this, one of the streets would be renamed, but it’s a massive undertaking and rarely happens today.” She gave the example of Creek View, Creekbank View and Creekwood in Pakenham as streets that may cause confusion, and said that if action cannot be taken retrospectively then provisions should be made in the future. “More care needs to be taken with street names. It’s a disaster waiting to happen.”

Appeal for help on man gone missing By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM Dumpers took to Pakenham roads to offload after the summer holiday period.

Taking out the trash By ANEEKA SIMONIS UNSUSPECTING dumpers have been served with fines after council officers identified them by the rubbish they left in the middle of a Pakenham road. The large pile of rubbish dumped on Five Mile Road in Pakenham on Wednesday 6 January included an old TV, toys, clothing and building material. A member of Cardinia Shire

Council’s Compliance Services team sifted through the dumped rubbish and uncovered incriminating evidence. Staff then used the items to locate the offender who has since been issued with a number of infringement notices under the Environmental Protection Act 1970. The council was first alerted to the rubbish by a resident who reported the refuse was creating traffic obstructions along the unsealed

road between Bald Hill Road and Bourke Road. Two trucks and the compliance officer were sent from the council’s depot to clean up and investigate. A council statement revealed that illegal dumping was on the rise in Cardinia shire and that ratepayers were having to pay the clean-up costs. “In 2013-14, council’s operations crew spent just over 1200

hours removing illegally dumped rubbish around our municipality, at a cost of almost $140,000,” a council statement read. “Every hour the crew spends removing this rubbish is time not spent conducting road and drainage maintenance works.” Anyone who witnesses or has information about illegal dumping in Cardinia shire is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

POLICE are appealing to the public for assistance in locating a 64-year-old Pakenham man. Henrik (Henry) Zarewicz was last seen leaving his workplace in Merri Concourse, Campbellfield on 8 January around 5.50am. He was driving his gold Mitsubishi Lancer, with registration WDO-091. Police believe he visited a store in Main Street, Armadale, sometime between 11.30am to noon, but he has not been seen or heard from since. He was last seen wearing a light-coloured shirt and shorts. They are appealing to the public for help in locating Henry, whose disappearance has been described as out of character. The missing man is Caucasian in appearance, 175-177cm tall with a thin build and grey hair. Anyone who may be able to provide information on his whereabouts should contact Pakenham Police Station on 5945 2500.

Moved in, ripped off By GEORGIA WESTGARTH A newly-married couple setting up home together had wedding presents stolen in a spate of thefts targeting people moving home. Police said the newly-weds, who had just returned from their honeymoon, were one of two Casey families to be hit while they were in the process of moving into their new homes. Detective Senior Constable Michelle Chiang from the Narre Warren police said: “People moving houses are easy targets for burglar-

ies, because everything’s boxed up ready to go.” Thieves stole several boxes from the couple’s home in Cradle Avenue, Clyde, between 4pm and 6pm on Saturday 9 January. “It was a two-hour turnaround from going to get the next load and they had just returned from their honeymoon that morning - it was all brand new stuff and wedding presents,” Sen Const Chiang said. The previous night a Caucasian male driving a black Commodore was seen leaving the address in Endeavour Hills around the time of

the burglary at midnight on Friday 8 January. Sen Const Chiang said “pretty much everything was stolen” from the Power Street home. “A BBQ, TV, washing machine and some boxes.” The raider forced their way in to the property through a rear timber window and Sen Const Chiang urged anyone moving in or out of the area to be vigilant. “It’s a small trend occurring in Casey and it’s something people who are moving house need to be wary of,” she said.

“If you’re moving house keep garage doors locked and be vigilant at both addresses and watch who is driving past and who’s observing you. “Try and organise someone to stay at the house with the boxes while the other person does the picking and dropping off because it’s easy to forget boxes when your moving dozens of them and often people don’t realise they are missing until they need it.” She appealed for witnesses to phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

IT’S disappointing that Ms Caldwell’s letter (Giving Away Our Money, News, 17 December 2015) failed to share the full facts about council’s recent trees and infrastructure focus groups with readers. Ms Caldwell is correct that focus group participants received payment but she failed to mention that participants of the latter focus group were asked to give up seven hours of their time on a Saturday. This is a considerable ask and that’s why it’s only fair that participants were reimbursed for their time. For large scale consultations such as these it’s not unusual for council to make a payment to participants in respect of their time. This is consistent with standard consultation industry practice to pay participants involved in lengthy focus group participation. Given the size of the municipality it’s imperative we have a sample that reflects the city’s demographics, ensuring feedback truly represents the views of the community. This year council will launch its first Community Engagement Strategy. In addition to the recent focus groups, we’re currently undertaking door knock surveys across the municipality to ensure council’s consultation program reflects what residents want. We make no apologies for seeking to improve the way we engage our community. I look forward to seeking your views on the Community Engagement Strategy later in the year. Austere warning THE past year was when austerity dominated Federal Government policy. May and December were really very low points in Australian politics in 2015. Due to former Treasurer Joe Hockey’s radical spending cuts in May followed by the current Treasurer Scott Morrison’s cuts in the December budget update, the Australian economy is now set for a long period of underemployment and reduced incomes for middle and lower income groups. Both Joe Hockey and now Scott Morrison have wrongly defined Australia’s economic problem as government spending and advocated the need to make deep budget cuts. Consequently, both Hockey and Morrison’s combined budget decisions in 2015 will strip more than $17 billion over four years from government spending on families, low income earners and community services. The underlying economic problems of unemployment, slow growth and weaknesses in aggregate demand are being ignored. Worst of all, the current Treasurer, Scott Morrison, has reversed a key macro-economic principle.

Cultural climate I take issue with the characterisation of religion as anti-educational (Cult Of Religion, News, 17 December). The subject of religion in schools is not dissimilar to other cultural studies including history, art and the media. In the current climate where Middle Eastern conflict in the name of religion is so topical, it is important that young people are able to understand the plurality and history of religion. Students and their parents should be free to choose whether or not to participate in religious studies. Choice was at the centre of previous policy for special religious studies. But sadly, the state Labor Government has broken its promise and taken that choice away, and I hear Christmas carols are also on the hit list for next year. Ashley Lodder, Berwick.

Casey Council’s support for Special Religious Education in state schools is truly educational. Casey parents and students, like all others, need a Bible-based faith. Christianity should be taught in all our state schools as a main part of the curriculum. Real education is about opening the mind to the purposes of God who created us. It is the major reason why our nation has prospered so greatly. When the first school opened in Australia in 1793, the Christian faith was taught, with the Bible as the main textbook. This gave our people the most vital education we all need - a truly sound foundation for our progressive nation. At least some of our councillors do believe this, and thank God for those who do. Framework for council culture By LACHLAN MOORHEAD A DRAFT programming plan for Casey council’s new cultural precinct was adopted last month. The visual arts programming framework for the upcoming Bunjil Place was adopted after a community forum in October. More than 30 residents attended the event, which was initiated by Deputy Mayor Wayne Smith, to ensure the visual arts community was consulted in the planning for Bunjil Place. “On the day, we presented attendees with a draft programming framework, proposed themes for the gallery, opportunities and spaces that will be available for Casey’s local visual arts community and example applications of the programming

framework for Bunjil Place when it opens in 2017,” Cr Smith said. “Feedback provided at the forum was integrated into the development of the Bunjil Place Programming Framework which will guide planning for the gallery and future use of the precinct. “Council will continue to engage with the community as we establish our art exhibitions, activities and other opportunities at Bunjil Place. “It is important that the community are involved throughout the life of the project so that Bunjil Place truly represents the Casey community and beyond when it opens.” The new framework comes as Brookfield Multiplex Constructions was recently chosen to bring the $125 million Bunjil Place project to life.

In November the construction giant met with Casey council to formalise the agreement. The construction, which will continue for the next two years, will create the only regional community facility of its kind. Brookfield’s managing director Graham Cottam said his team was thrilled to take on a “one-of-a-kind project”. “Brookfield has industry-leading, internationally accredited systems and processes and we are ready and excited to hit the ground running and work with the council and Casey community to deliver Bunjil Place by late 2017,” Mr Cottam said. The new facility will include an 800-seat theatre, studio, art gallery, community library and meeting rooms, civic centre and council offices.

Speeding Pplater nabbed AN ALREADY disqualified Berwick P-plate driver was caught speeding 90 kilometres per hour over the limit in Cheltenham. The 22-year-old was caught driving at 150kp/h in a 60kp/h zone along Centre Dandenong Road about 8pm on Monday 11 January. The driver, who was already disqualified, had his Honda Civic impounded for 30 days. He is expected to be charged on summons with driving while disqualified, exceeding the speed limit and other traffic offences.

THIEVES rammed a car into the rear entry of Lombard The Paper People’s Fountain Gate store in the early hours of Monday 11 January and stole $8000 in cash before police arrived. The store on Victor Crescent in Narre Warren was raided between 1.30am and 1.50am after the power to surrounding shops was shut down. Registers and safes were searched in Lombard’s before the raiders struck neighbouring Captain Snooze by forcing their way in through a back door. A CCTV camera was smashed inside the bedding store but a power loss warning alarm alerted police to the incident. Several police units responded but arrived after the raiders had escaped. Police are currently reviewing other CCTV footage for leads.

DESPITE a big push from the City of Casey and Brookland Greens residents, Cranbourne MP Jude Perera has not answered desperate calls for a review into State Government provisions on share housing developments. A powerless Casey council and neighbourhood of angry Cranbourne residents want to change the State Government laws which mean share housing can go ahead without prior council planning approval or consultations with neighbours. And they have had no help from Mr Perera, despite numerous letters from Casey council officers. The site at 5 Concord Place in the ‘upmarket’ Brookland Greens Estate has been subject to several protests and two petitions to stop a proposed development of two 10-place share houses. Casey Mayor Cr Sam Aziz said the lack of council involvement in such developments was “absurd”. “These residents are concerned about the impact the rooming house will have on amenity and safety including parking and noise and their concerns are rightly justified,” Cr Aziz said. Prior to Christmas the City of Casey wrote to Mr Perera requesting he make “immediate and strong representations” to Minister for Planning Richard Wynne to review the planning scheme provisions for rooming houses. But Cr Aziz said their correspondence was going unanswered “again”. Cranbourne councillor Geoff Ablett said the City of Casey had been requesting assistance from Mr Perera for almost 12 months. “Mr Perera has done nothing, and hasn’t even responded to letters seek-

Locals have labelled the proposal an “absurd situation”. They fear the type of person the share houses, which could hold up to 20 people, could attract to their estate. Former Casey Councillor Peter Giles, who lives adjacent to the site, approached the City of Casey in December last year proposing court action on behalf of the affected Casey residents. But acting CEO at the City of Casey, Peter Fitchett, said it would be a fruitless legal battle. “Council can only initiate legal proceedings against the development if there was a breach of planning laws,” Mr Fitchett advised. “As it stands, the proposed shared accommodation proposal meets the State Government’s shared accommodation planning provisions.

Scared for the future of her prestigious and “peaceful” estate Ms Martyn said the share house in Dearing Avenue Cranbourne was a fine example and had pushed people to move elsewhere. “The scary thing is it could happen anywhere in Casey, it’s a law in Victoria and it’s going under the radar,” she said. Cr Ablett along with Shadow Minister for Planning Hon David Davis will be speaking to anxious residents at a meeting on Monday 25 at the Cranbourne Turf Club at 6pm. TWO teenagers were lucky to escape uninjured over the weekend in the latest in a string of armed street robberies throughout Casey targeting mobile phones. After a spate of street robberies targeting mobile phones in November last year, Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Darron Hedge from Narre Warren police said he can’t understand why. “Smart phones are the one thing police can trace,” Act Sen Sgt Hedge said. “But that doesn’t seem to be a deterrence to offenders.” In the latest incident two teenage boys aged 16 and 18 escaped with their phones after they were approached near Normandy Street, Cranbourne, by a group of males on Monday 11 January at 1am. Armed with a knife, the males of Indian and African appearance in a Commodore and Toyota slowed down near the boys as they walked along South Gippsland Highway and demanded their phones. “The boys were walking home from a party in Cranbourne and were pushed over and threatened,” Act Sen Sgt Hedge said. The pair fled with their phones and no one was injured in the incident. Police said all Casey residents should be on high alert when walking the streets and that they should be aware of how visible their belongings are.

Train plan takes flight PLANS to transform parts of the Cranbourne-Pakenham rail line into an elevated “sky rail” have been submitted to the State Government a part of their promise to remove 50 level crossings across Victoria by 2022. Reports have outlined the ‘secret’ plans for a raised rail, two to four storeys above street level and running for several kilometres. Shadow Minister for Planning

David Davis has hit out at the idea, labelling it a “cheaper option” compared to underground lines and one that would “split communities in half”. “There was a clear promise before the election to put rail lines underground at level crossing sites,” Mr Davis said. “The negative visual and sound impacts will also result in falling property values in the vicinity of the elevated rail line.” But a spokesperson for Minister

for Public Transport, Jacinta Allan, said the sky rail was just one option for Melbourne’s busiest train line. “We promised to remove every level crossing between Dandenong and Caulfield and we are still considering the best way to do that,“ they said. While Mr Davis has expressed his concerns about how a sky rail could damage small businesses and retailers in the immediate area, RACV Public Policy General Manager, Brian Negus supports the State

Government’s decision to “explore all options”. Mr Negus said while most of Melbourne’s recent rail grade separations had been rail-under-road, it should not be assumed that this was the only way, or the best way of removing level crossings. “Elevated rail is used successfully around the world and the concept of a so-called ‘sky train’ to replace level crossings could be feasible at a number of locations in Melbourne,” Mr Negus said.

It is one of two exciting new eateries opening in Lakeside Pakenham in the next few months, with locals eagerly awaiting the soon-to-be opened Lakeside Mill. Vixen Vine announced its closure at the beginning of January.

Operators did not hint at who the new owners or chef were, but suggested the new Asian kitchen would open in March or April. Not far from the soon-to-beopened venue will be another exciting restaurant led by renowned chef Jake Kellie. Jack’s very much in the game By DAVID NAGEL JACK Wilson learned a very valuable lesson a lot of years back - when he knocked back an offer that was probably too good to refuse. The Wonthaggi-based horse trainer, who also trains out of Pakenham, had a Hong Kong buyer offer him $130,000 for an unraced two-year-old that had shown potential on the track. Wilson knocked back that offer for Hawaiian Classic, and then watched on as the horse won just two races under his care. “I’m telling you, it won’t ever happen again, if I get a horse that shows potential and I get an offer it’s out the front door,” said the 68-year-old younger brother of veteran jockey Neville Wilson. If Jack is true to his word he may have to say goodbye shortly to the one-and-only horse he trains, Game Up Hardy, who made it two wins from his last two starts at Mornington on Sunday. Wilson and three mates, Barry Chown - a great friend who has now passed away, John Smith -

who Jack grew up with in Camperdown, and Tony Hill have had the son of Hard Spun/Dame Fortune since he was a foal. Game Up Hardy broke his maiden status at his 11th start over 1400-metres at Sale on Christmas Eve before making it back-to-back victories in the $16,000 European Auto Refinishers 0-58 Handicap (1550m) on the weekend. “He’s just very immature but I reckon once the penny drops he’ll be a very good horse,” Wilson said. “He seems to have pulled up well from the run, he’s bred to go further, so we’ll probably run him over 1700-metres in a fortnight’s time and take it from there. “He might end up in Hong Kong, who knows,” he said, before explaining why he has had to cut back his training duties in recent years. “I’ve been training for a long time, a very long time, but I broke my neck a few years ago and had a heart attack so that sort of slowed things down a bit,” he said. “We were in a full-gallop and

we went around a turn and I got thrown down a four foot drop. It takes a while to get over these things you know.” Wilson trained six horses before the accident but now won’t even contemplate two, with twice weekly visits to the Pakenham Racing Club’s new home at Tynong with Game Up Hardy keeping him busy. “It’s a terrific place, I’ve been going there since it opened and the people there can’t do enough for you, and it’s only going to get better,” he said. Wilson has trained some very smart horses over the years, with Royal Revenge winning six races and a horse he nurtured through some serious leg injuries, Sonic Royal, winning four on the trot back in 2005. Wilson has had a close connection with jockeys like Sam Hyland, Ian Virtue, Malcolm Pay and Brian Werner, who gave Game Up Hardy a gem of a ride on the weekend.
