Wallace Park residents are once again being inundated with bats, with one local slamming Noosa Council saying they ’refuse to do anything’ about the problem. Local resident Kay Fielden said the bat numbers were once again increasing and the carefree lifestyle Noosa residents had come to enjoy

They now expect some action and have been patient for too long,” she said. However, Noosa Council principal environment officer Peter Milne said council had been unable to act due to the presence of a vulnerable breed of bat presently living in the area. “We’re restricted from starting

this work while the colony is home to young grey-headed flying foxes not yet able to fly on their own, and pregnant grey-headed flying foxes,” Mr Milne said. “Grey-headed flying foxes are classed as vulnerable and their presence means the Wallace Park Bushland Reserve qualifies as a nationally significant camp.” Mr Milne said the council understood residents’ frustration but could not implement the Wallace Park Flying Fox Management Plan until the vulnerable bats left the area.

“We are monitoring the colony and keeping in regular contact with federal and state government agencies, flying fox experts and stakeholders,” Mr Milne said. “We hope to begin this work as soon as the young flying foxes are independent and when federal and state legislation allows us to proceed.” Mr Milne said council hoped to commence works in March or April, once the young flying foxes were independent and in co-operation with flying fox experts and state agencies. 1213147-PB03-16

SUNSHINE Coast locals have come together to tackle depression head on with the blues. Noosa local Ken Coleman has joined Sunshine Coast local Darren Griffis to create a nationwide awareness campaign “Out of the Blues” which aims to bring attention to depression in our community through music. The two founders of the campaign are working hard towards releasing an AC/DC inspired album “Back in Blue” later this year which will launch at the popular Blues on Broadbeach music festival in May. “2015 was the 35th anniversary of AC/DC’s iconic ’Back In Black’ album and I was looking at a way of raising awareness of depression in our society,” Mr Griffis said. “As a musician, I understand the power of music, and could see that these tracks, which are based on blues, could be covered by some of Australia’s hard-working blues musicians.“ Mr Coleman and Mr Griffis have called on Australia’s best blues musicians to donate their time to the recording of the album and were inspired by the response of local musicians. “We have been overwhelmed by the support we received. We had all these artists, the best blues artists in Australia, many with

A LOCAL sporting club has proven a match for callous thieves this week after the recovery of equipment stolen from the club grounds last Saturday. The Noosa Tigers AFL Club called on community and police support after multiple items of significant value were stolen from a shed on Weyba Road. The theft and gradual recovery of the items was documented on the club’s Facebook page calling the thieves “low lives” and asking community members to spread the word and help find the equipment. It is alleged a ride-on mower, brush cutter and compressor hoses were among the items stolen with a majority of the items recovered by police.

The Noosa Tigers Facebook page reports one item was recovered in bushes behind the scoreboard after being found by a community member and another item recovered by police later in the week. Noosa Tigers took to Facebook to thank everyone for their support and help in locating the items and people responsible. The theft of the valuable equipment coincides with a spate of theft across the Noosa region according to a statement released by Queensland Police this week. According to the statement Operation Phoenix commenced late last year following thefts of kayaks, boats, fishing equipment, surfboards, mountain bikes and

other property in the Noosa river region. Since the commencement of the operation detectives have so far recovered two boats, numerous kayaks, three bikes, a commercial air compressor and hoses and a large coffee grinder. Yesterday police arrested a Tewantin man on unrelated matters who is currently assisting police with inquiries. During yesterday’s arrest of the 33-year-old man, police will allege two officers were injured, he is expected to appear at the Maroochydore Magistrates’ Court today. Detective Senior Sergeant Daren Edwards, Officer in Charge of Sunshine Coast Criminal Investi-

Knocking down barriers By MEGAN OGLE A LOCAL business owner is tackling youth unemployment with good old-fashioned community spirit, one fence-post at a time. C & E Fencing and Transport owner Evan Bell has so far helped eight local youths into employment by giving the lads a fair-go and utilising his local community to keep them in the workforce. Mr Bell said he takes on youth looking for work and gives them an opportunity to show what they’re made of. If the boys aren’t suitable for fencing work, Mr Bell said he is able to use his local networks to find a job that is more suitable for their skills and can even provide a reference for the worker. “I can say he will work hard, he’ll take direction, he can handle getting yelled at or whatever it be, he’s old school, he can work,” Mr Bell said. Mr Bell recently helped one local youth into a permanent job with a friend’s business and is currently helping employee David Costin begin his dream of becoming a diesel fitter by sourcing a traineeship through an acquaintance. Mr Costin, who has been working with Mr Bell for more than 12 months, said he was grateful for the opportunities his employment has

Noosa Council has put the word out to anyone who would like to have their say about ways to improve on the current public and private transport networks. Planning and infrastructure director Martin Drydale said the plan would address issues that could potentially help to avoid traffic gridlock in the future. “With pressures on Noosa residents’ lifestyle from an increasing population and car usage, together with millions of visitors to the region annually, there is an urgent need for a high performing and effective passenger transport system,” Mr Drydale said. The Labor Party’s council hopeful Mark Denham said transport is an important issue that requires input from not only the council but the community and all levels of government in order to reach a solution. “Solutions will require input locally and assistance from the State Gov-

Mr Bell’s investment in the local youth coincides with the current unemployment rate fall recently announced by the Queensland Government. The latest Australian Bureau of Statistics data shows youth unemployment on the Coast in November has fallen below 10 per cent, a major drop from 14.2 per cent in November 2014 and 10.5 per cent in October 2015.

Council set for planning court battle, times two NOOSA Council will have to defend two more planning decisions this year after appeals were lodged with the Planning and Environment Court. Local long-time farmer Dave Milligan lodged an appeal against a councillors’ decision to reject his proposed chicken farm, despite council staff recommending that the plan be approved. The council rejected the proposed broiler farm at an ordinary meeting on 19 November based on a number of perceived issues such as catchment and odour concerns and the haulage route. However local media reports said the appeal claims that the application has satisfied the Department of Transport and Main Roads as well as addressing other issues such as odour and safety concerns in regards to Top Forestry Road. The council’s planning and environment manager Kerrie Coyle confirmed that Mr Milligan had notified the council of his inten-

tion to lodge an appeal on 24 December and officers will report on the appeal at the next council meeting in February. Another application by Como Glasshouse tendered at the same ordinary meeting on 19 November has also lodged an appeal against the council’s decision. The applicant was given approval for an already-built intensive greenhouse on a Lake Macdonald property but the council also attached several conditions to the approval, which the applicant is appealing against. According to the lodged appeal, the applicant is seeking amendments to more than 12 conditions that relate mainly to flooding and water management, onsite access upgrades and an increase in the timeframe to remove fill from the site. At Monday’s meeting councillors agreed with officers’ recommendations to defend the appeal.

Federal Member for Wide Bay and Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss announced this week the Noosa subBranch of the Vietnam Veterans Association of Australia will receive a $5946 grant through the Federal Government’s Veteran and Community Grants (V&CG) program. The grant will help the Association to buy two branded marquees, four folding tables and up to 40 chairs which will allow the club to host a greater range of activities for members. The club also gives back to the local community in a big way, having recently been the driving force behind a fund-raising campaign for the Laidlaw family, raising over $25,000 for a Smart pup for the family’s son Ziggy. Mr Truss said the group was deserving of the grant due to their continued contribution to their local community and country. “Australia’s veterans have served their country with pride and distinction, securing peace and freedom for our nation,” Mr Truss said. “Many veterans continue to help others and strengthen their communities. This grant is one way in which we show our respect for their service to our country and support their ongoing contributions to the community.”

Jury’s still out on river plans THE second and final community jury has weighed in on the Noosa River debate, presenting 12 recommendations to Noosa Council at Monday’s (11 January) meeting. The community jury, made up of 24 locals, has considered how the river could be better managed, what role the Council should play and what resources should be applied to the issue. While the jury couldn’t agree on the suggestion Noosa Council take over authority and finances from State Government in regards to the river, they did agree on 12 recommendations that were presented to Council. Among the recommendations was that Council review, update and implement the Noosa River Plan in a new framework as well as establish a Noosa River Management Coordination Committee to monitor and oversee river management. The jury also recommended Council undertake monitoring and facilitation of waste removal and pursue legal authority to remove abandoned, unattended, derelict and unsafe vessels from the river. A majority of recommendations surrounded the use of the river with the jury recommending Council review current mooring and anchoring locations and fees, implement stricter management of acceptable commercial use of the river, assume control over commercial leases and determine locations and a cap on live-a-boards. The jury’s recommendations were presented to Council at the general committee meeting on Monday 11 January, where Councillors noted the recommendations made by the jury and agreed to progress the matter with State Government. Councillors also agreed to use the jury’s recommendation in the development of a comprehensive River Management Scheme.

Tilly Needham, who recently walked away from her 17-and-a-half year prison romance with Brenden “Postcard Bandit” Abbott, is selling pieces gifted to her by Mr Abbott. Mr Abbott began taking art lessons in prison and found he had a natural flair for portraits. His other works include tennis star Pat Rafter, cricketer Steve Waugh with one of his children, and the late stockbroker Rene Rivkin. His most recent work, Little Boy Blue, was of Kevin Rudd. Mr Abbott gained nationwide notoriety for two escapes from separate prisons which saw him enjoy over six years of freedom before being recaptured at a Darwin laundromat.

GREENS Party council hopeful Aaron White is seeing red over the destruction of a wildlife corridor on Noosa’s border. The controversial Peregian Springs site primarily on Sunshine Coast Council land, was once home to black cockatoos, sugar gliders and Grand Scribbly Gum but is now being cleared to make room for 36 housing lots, as well as further residential or commercial development. Mr White joined concerned residents at the site for a vigil on Wednesday 6 January to grieve the loss of the wildlife corridor and to express concern at the lack of community involvement in the planning of what was thought to be conservation land. Mr White said it was issues such as this that made him grateful Noosa Council had de-amalgamated from the Sunshine Coast Council. “It’s a clear indication of really why we de-amalgamated, because there was only one submission in against this and I think that’s an absolute failure of the (Sunshine Coast) Council processes

Ride on the crest of a wave I GREW up reading the country’s number one surfing magazine, Surfing World, from cover to cover. It was magnetic and I had to have every monthly issue. Little did I know that one day I would have the honour of working with its author Phil Jarratt and then be given the kudos of being written about in such high terms and esteem as he did in his column on the last day of 2015. I read his piece with great admiration and that he feels fellow Noosaite Hey Bill Watson and I could lead the region into the future. I agree with Phil, that Mayor Bill Watson has a great ring to it and one thing is for sure, that whatever deci-

sion he makes would be for the locals’ benefit. Bill was far too big to be in anyone’s pocket and all meetings would be conducted somewhere in Hastings Street. I was a bit concerned with some of the characters who would be helping us during our term. I’ve never met but only hope SC Pierre Senekal continues his great work in policing the area. Brigadier R Sole (ret) will remain

in retirement but I can always get his number from Phil, if needed. I am not that interested in where the Australian Sex Party erects its base, may have to set up a water taxi or Uber to get around to A Bay. Federal Minister for whatever Clive Palmer probably won’t be around for that long, but remembering his lifesaving background at Tallebudgera, he could be the right person for the lifeguard’s job at A Bay. So I am going to be the new Sports Minister and Chef de Mission for our Noosa Squad to Rio. Now that I like, and I will start training immediately and also read the Arthur Tunstall Book on team management.

Actually, when I think about it, sport and events has played a major role in Australia’s growth and history. The decisions by the fifth Governor of NSW Lachlan McQuarrie helped to change the nation’s lifestyle in many ways. The heavy drinking, man about town was sick of the rabble and problems of his new colony, so he decided to do something about it. So in 1810 he organised a sporting and entertainment event that saw the people of the day mix and mingle watching or playing sport, singing or listening to music, or anything to get them involved at the town centre Hyde Park.

It was a smash hit success and gave the area and its inhabitants something to look forward to annually. I think Brigadier R Sole could have started his career there; Phil Jarratt would have been too busy surfing at Bondi while Bill Watson was selling kangaroo and snake pies on the beach. Speaking of success, it’s only a couple of weeks until the 2015 Sport Star of the Years are announced. Last year was very successful, 18 different sports will be represented on the night. Athletes will come from Caboolture to Gympie fully encompassing the Sunshine Coast competition. Until next time.

Leanne Walsh, founder of the not-forprofit disability charity, was presented with a $350 cheque after Jeroo Pavri Thomas of the Cooking Company implemented a new concept in her store which allows customers to determine which charities will receive donations from the business. Local charities are chosen by staff members and customers are encouraged to drop a token with a value of $1 into a jar of their choice which determines the value of the cheque the charity will be presented with after three months. Ms Thomas said the concept has been received well by customers and she intends to continue supporting local charities through her token system.

Search for answers I’M NOT writing in today to point the finger, make accusations or lay blame. As Bob J. stated (13 November 15) residents would simply like a few more answers. The Unesco Biosphere branding is a huge plus for Noosa Shire. Council jumped through hoops to get it - good work. Let’s keep it. Biosphere aim: ‘Take a lead in developing more sustainable ways of living that will benefit the environment, economy and community.’ I have personally just returned from Switzerland and saw first-hand the Entlebuch Biosphere in Lucerne. This place was amazing. They offered travellers and locals alike nonstop activities: hiking, events, entertainment, local food expos, horticulture workshops; all based around the biosphere brand. I met PhD students writing their thesis on trees in the Alps. If there was a way to capitalise on the biosphere, they were doing it. I could see with my own eyes how much was brought back into the community through the way the canton approached the biosphere branding. So, why does our council make statements like - ‘NBRF will get thousands of dollars’, while nothing is said about what we the ratepayers get in return for our investment? Rather than the Noosa Biosphere being perceived as some kind of leech, taking more and more of ratepayers’ money, how about some evidence of the benefits? Jess Glasgow, Noosa.

Policies come out NOW that we are getting towards the election of councillors for the next Noosa Council, it would be good to start hearing some policy statements apart from the motherhood type of statements and policies about maintaining Noosa as a great place to live. I would like to see the new council consider some policies like; tourism, licensed pop-up stalls along Gympie Terrace from say 4pm run by local area restaurants. This would bring more people to the area who may stay on to eat nearby. Also a Sunset Bar from 4pm at First Point should be considered at Main Beach,

maybe run by Noosa Surf Club. Housing, council should examine if it has any unused land in the shire where it could develop affordable housing estates for first home buyers (local young persons). This could be developed by council and sold at cost and council’s profit will be the rates received forever. Traffic, Beckmans Road deviation to Eumundi road should be a priority, to reduce traffic in the residential and school sections of the road. Bats, maybe we should look at reducing the tree numbers of the favoured variety where the bats congregate and replace them with less attractive varieties. Just a few policy thoughts. Not that hard THE answer to Ingrid Jackson’s gripe about traffic backing up in Reef Street doesn’t need a Royal Commission of Inquiry to resolve: just a reversion to the previous road marking whereby the right lane turns right only and the left lane serves traffic turning left and straight on into Weyba Road towards Munna Point! “Simple”, hey? When our visitors go home all will be well until they return at Easter when, once again, we will have to contend with the build-up of traffic in Reef Road (as well as nearly everywhere else) complained of together with them turning left from the right hand lane at the Eenie Creek and Reef Street roundabout because of confusing road markings which indicate three exits from the roundabout when in fact there are only two, and direction signs too close to roundabouts (the plural is intended) to allow drivers time to get into the correct lane! Short-sighted PHILLIP Rutherford overlooks many irrefutable facts. According to NASA, “CO2 accounts for about 20 per cent of the greenhouse effect, water vapor and clouds together account for 75 per cent, and minor gases and aerosols make up the remaining five per cent. However, it is the 25 per cent non-condensing greenhouse gas component, which includes CO2, that is the key factor in sustaining Earth’s greenhouse effect. By this accounting, CO2 is responsible for 80 per cent of the radiative forcing that sustains the Earth’s greenhouse effect“. In other words CO2 is trapping solar energy big time. To say that CO2 is beneficial totally ignores this mechanism. Claiming that global warming has stopped, just because one study found surface air temperatures to have reached a plateau, ignores the irrefutable fact that sea temperatures in the Pacific and Indian oceans have been rising during this time, particularly in the zone between 100 and 300 metres deep. Just because the outside of your house has a stable temperature for a while, this does not mean it is not heating up inside. According to NASA again, “given the fact the Pacific Decadal Oscillation seems to be shifting to a warm phase, ocean heating in the Pacific will definitely drive a major surge in global surface warming.” Eight of Australia’s 10 hottest years on record have occurred since 2002 and the polar ice caps have melted more in the last 20 years than in the previous 10,000. Desperadoes MY GOODNESS, the climate-deniers are really desperate now, aren’t they? I mean, how much more deluded can you get than to claim that “the globe has stopped warming and has been in a slight cooling phase for the last 17 to 20 years” as Phillip Rutherford did (‘Shooting the messenger’, NT, 7 Jan). Good grief, has he been living under a rock? It’s been widely publicised that 2015 will set a record high for global surface temperature, easily surpassing the previous record-holder, 2014. In third place is 2010, followed by 2005, then 2007. The five hottest years in recorded history have occurred in the last 11 years. It doesn’t look like slight cooling to me. The $55,000 question

CAN I refer you to Phil Jarratt’s column in last Thursday’s edition. In my opinion the large, explicit photo showing an execution from the Vietnam war should not have been shown. I recall the photo being banned years ago and believe you have erred in allowing this image to appear in a community newspaper. The paper is readily accessible to children and has photos of young fitness girls on the following page (don’t think they or their mothers would appreciate seeing a photo of man about to be executed by having his brain splattered). Phil Jarratt needs to apologise but so do you. Perhaps I should include this article if and when I correspond with the Press Council. John Lobb, Peregian Springs.

SOME comments on the agenda for council’s general committee meeting, Monday 11 January. New Democracy’s Community Jury cost an average of $55,000 per issue and though results have been controversial if not dubious, council has the option to continue. The jury’s latest recommendation is more regulation of the Noosa River by council (the additional funding needs will have to be workshopped). The financial report shows spending on capital works to the end of December was approximately 27 per cent instead of 50 per cent. There was no capital works status report tabled. Despite an unexpected approval, council has to defend on appeal their special provisions placed on a market garden at Lake McDonald. John Lobb, Peregian Springs.

Sad closure IT IS so sad to see the closure of Katie Rose Cottage ... it was founded on such high ideals and filled an enormous need. Katie Rose Cottage was renowned for its tender loving care, its kindness to those who needed palliative care, and to their friends and relatives, and its compassion. The staff, and the cottage earned the praise of the community which it served. It was established on the basis of donations and volunteers, and remained open for four short years. It is sad to think that funding from the State Government, local government, and Federal Government was so loath to assist, and thus the cottage has closed, leaving a huge void. One would hope that the cottage is able to re-open its doors without any more undue delay, and recommence its good works. The only alternative for those who seek to die with some semblance of dignity is for the Department of Queensland Health to utilise the empty wards and idle equipment which will evolve from the closure of wards in both Caloundra and Nambour Hospitals when the Sunshine Coast University Hospital gets into full swing ... both those hospitals have fully operating palliative care units, which could be easily converted into hospices. Neither of them would have the ambience of the Katie Rose Cottage, but they would be better than nothing. Kay Fielden, Tewantin.

What’s the difference? THANKYOU Hubert Gibson for asking the difference between someone running for council who is a member of a political party and someone who is a member of Noosa Parks Association (Noosa Today, 7 January). My belief is that while NPA is non-partisan, it is an unashamedly political body intent on the long-term protection of the natural environment within the greater Noosa-Cooloola region. A major difference between NPA and political parties is that NPA is composed of local people preoccupied with local issues. Political parties are run from Canberra and the state capitals with much wider agendas than those of NPA. Love and mortgage are a match MANY young Australians are choosing a doorbell over wedding bells, according to a national survey commissioned by industry superfund-owned bank, ME. The survey of 2,036 people found nearly 23 per cent of millennials have delayed or downsized their nuptials in favour of buying a home. With the average cost of a wedding now $36,000, 21 per cent of respondents also delayed or downsized their honeymoon, and 24 per cent said they decided to delay or have fewer children to commit to a mortgage. The survey also found some brides and grooms now asked guests for a monetary contribution towards their house deposit instead of traditional gifts. Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) is encouraging people to start the new year with positive financial resolutions following its new reports that revealed only about two in five Australians have a shortterm financial plan in place and

Senior executive leader for financial literacy Miles Larbey said having a financial plan in place was key to creating a better financial future in 2016 and beyond. “A great place to start your new year’s financial plan is by visiting ASIC’s MoneySmart website for free, impartial guidance and tools which allow people to set, track and reach financial goals,” he said. “Every January, some of the

most popular New Year resolutions people make are to get to grips with their finances, and ASIC’s MoneySmart can help you do this and achieve your financial goals.” The ASIC New Year financial resolutions includes top tips such as paying extra on your mortgage to clear your debt faster. Mr Larbey said more than half of surveyed Australians with a home loan made extra payments, saving thousands. For example, a couple with a

$400,000 mortgage could save around $50,000 and pay off their debt almost four years earlier by contributing $200 extra per month, assuming a five per cent interest rate and a 25-year term. Home owners can use ASIC’s MoneySmart Mortgage calculator to work out how they could pay off their mortgage sooner. ASIC’s MoneySmart New Year financial resolutions also include tips such as tracking spending to know where your money goes.

Story trapped in its own tangled web The Girl in the Spider’s Web by David Lagercrantz STIEG Larsson’s Millennium series continues under the pen of a new author. Michael Blomkvist is restless as he ponders the future of Millennium magazine. Lisbeth Salander is holed up in her apartment obsessed with trying to break into the encrypted secure systems of internationally important organisations. Her personal mission is to check on suspected corruption and counter wrongdoing by exposure, using her superior hacking skills. Her chief suspect is a ruthless criminal gang known as the Spiders whose current racket is selling cyber secrets for money. Blomkvist is contacted urgent-

ly by renowned Swedish scientist Professor Balder, a world leader in developing advances in artificial intelligence who has recently returned to Sweden to care for his eight-year-old autistic savant son, August. He discloses that a mysterious Lizbeth Salander has contacted him telling him that his life is in danger, and his secret research has been stolen. He implores Blomkvist to see him urgently and publish his story. Blomkvist arrives in darkness – at precisely the same time as an assassin closes in. Now the race is on to protect August from the violently criminal Spiders, as he is the only witness to the identity of the assassin. August is mute, but he has the

gift of being able to draw remarkably precise photographic images of what he has seen. The assassin is back on the prowl. Bullets fly but Salander thwarts a plot to kill the boy and, although wounded, manages to take him to a safe house. The safe house soon becomes an unsafe house, and another gun battle ensues. Without disclosing more, this book develops into a good read, and reminds us how close we are to living in the Age of Technology. However, I did find it got off to a slow start, and lacked the suspense, character drawing, and detailed plotting of Stieg Larson’s writing.

SO GRANDSONS three and four got new bikes for Christmas, but what with jumping down to Sydney for a few days and then getting back into the work nuisance, we didn’t see them in action until last weekend. What a joy to finally get to watch them flying along with such confidence and freedom, free of training wheels, buoyed by a couple of day’s practice in the safe confines of the Boreen Point campground. Hamie on his first bike at five and a quarter, big brother Hunter already moving up to a big boy size at seven. How cool they both were, cruising the empty Sunday morning back streets, pretending to have not a care in the world, but just a little bit nervous in the tummy as they leaned into the tighter corners of the makeshift circuit. Watching them, I kept thinking back down the years to my own first thrills on a bike, borrowed from one or the other of my big sisters, struggling to turn the pedals with my tiny legs, the handle-bars almost out of reach. And then finally, much later than the grandies, I got my own black and pink Speedwell Special Sports. After the war, and even into the early 1950s, when I was born, Australia went through some tough years of rationing and hardship before a new era of prosperity and increased leisure emerged. In the lean years many small businesses struggled, but there was one product that seemed to work in good times and bad – the humble bicycle. This may have been why, recently discharged from the RAAF, my father opened a corner bike shop in a small town on the NSW South Coast. Dad had been a keen club cyclist in Onslow, WA, during his teen years in the early 1930s, but he had no experience of retail. He believed in the cash economy and would not buy stock on credit, so to fill out his meagre showroom of cycles, he strategically placed pot plants and bundles of other produce from his home garden. As the business grew, Dad lined one side of the shop with bicycles and the other with fridges, washing machines, radios and newfangled television sets. We weren’t allowed to have a TV in the house, but I grew up with the smells of chain oil and linseed oil for the saddle. Some of my earliest memories are of being baby-sat in the bike repair shop out the back, grease all over me as I happily passed the tools to the mechanic. I was oc-

casionally given a bike-riding lesson in the park on a rusty half-sized fixed wheeler that had been traded in, but it wasn’t until my 11th birthday I was given the racy Special Sports, with three-speed Sturmey Archer gears, comfortable Bell saddle and some very fancy transfers adorning its frame. My memory of my first cycle is that it was the last word in cool, that I was envied by every kid on the block, but when I researched the model, I found it described as “conventional” and “functional”. One vintage cycle expert wrote: “It’s called the Special Sports, but that’s the only sporty thing about it.” That really hurt. One day the grandies might look back on the pictures that (hopefully) appear here and say to themselves, “And we thought we were so cool.” I hope that moment doesn’t come too soon, because tearing up the tarmac on your first bike is cool. Just between us girls (and this is another expression that the PC police have informed me is also sexist and demeaning and disrespectful to women) I think everyone has gotten a little bit over-excited about the big West Indian’s poor taste and even poorer sense of timing. Yes, it was dumb, and yes, he should have been fined, but when a sporting scallywag like Ian Chappell is calling for a lifetime ban, I’m calling time out. I’ve worked and socialised with Chappelli, and all I can say is that he and most of that great generation of players and characters are just damned lucky there were no on-field mics or pretty girls waiting to interview them on the sidelines back in the day. Just sayin’ ... And speaking of Chappelli and those halcyon days when Nine’s Wide World of Sports was run out of a cottage in Willoughby, following Mike Gibson’s tragic departure late last year, we lost another good one at the weekend. Sports Sunday reporter Charles “Chuck” Stewart, a great bloke and an all-round athlete, pulled out of the surf at Manly by Guy Leech after suffering a heart attack a week earlier, passed away with family at his side. Abundance and quality on reefs WITH the calmer winds and less swell, the offshore anglers have been out in force, and with good reason; the fishing has been great, spotted mackerel have been in good numbers around most of the closer reefs, Halls, Jew Sholes, and Sunshine Reef have all been firing. Bird activity has been the strongest tell-tale factor, if the birds are diving and feeding chances are the palagics will also be feeding from underneath. Slugs like the Halco twisty and River2sea Sea Rocks have been working well when cast into bait schools. Trolled lures have also been firing, working the drop off and reef edges should also see a result. For the anglers that like to bottom bounce reef dweller have also been in good numbers sweetlip, trout, mori cod, and snapper have all been on the menu. On the outer reef the Barwon Banks has been producing with some great quality cobia, out at the Hards moses perch, mahi

the water, it stands to reason we would see some interesting captures, large tailor, jew, snub nosed dart, and large flathead have all been taken as well as the usual dart whiting and bream. On the river there has been a fair bit of boat traffic, so the anglers that made the effort and got out early stood a better chance of catching a feed. Down towards the mouth the whiting have been in good numbers with sand worms, yabbies, and peeled prawns claiming some nice fish. Over on the Frying Pan anglers have been using poppers with good effect, cast with the wind and a slow steady blipping retrieve, whiting have been sipping them off the surface. The Zerek Poparazzi in the 50mm size have been working a treat. A little further upriver the jacks are still in full swing, live bait has been the most productive with herring and poddy mullet the preferred baits. For the lure angler suspending lures cast at the tree lined banks of the upper reaches of the river should also prove rewarding. On the beaches, the Noosa North Shore has been a hive of activity, with families camping up there over the school break and plenty of anglers in

PATROL captains and lifeguards from our beaches have again reported great weather, safe surfing conditions and no incidents. When you take into consideration that we have experienced some of our biggest crowds ever, it tells us that the majority of our visitors have been taking note of safety advice from those on duty. Interesting to note; the major rescue incident that occurred on Phillip Island last Sunday started in knee deep water and after patrol hours. Enough said. On Monday at Total Adventures Noosa North Shore Retreat, approximately 100 young life savers underwent the first stages of the Annual “Camp Commando,” Surf Life Saving Sunshine Coast membership development program. Running through until Wednesday 13 January a major component of the program is a challenging session conducted by the Australian Defence Force. SLSQ membership development co-ordinator Jacob Thompson said, “The program is an ideal opportunity for young members to gain leader skills boost their lifesaving knowledge, and meet like-minded members from other clubs. The activities the Defence Force personal run for our members will certainly challenge them. This will help prepare them for tricky situations they may face on patrol.” It will also equip the participants, who are 13 and 14 years of age, with the confidence required to reach their full potential as leaders in both surf lifesaving and life away from the beach. Regarding the role of the ADF in the program, Leading Seaman Driver said, "Defence Force Recruiting embraces the opportunity to be directly involved in the development of youth in the local community. ADF values of team work, courage, initiative and loyalty are shared by SLSQ.” This program is great for De-

fence Force Recruitment to become involved with the surf lifesaving movement. A leadership team of 30 experienced lifesavers will also be in attendance to share their experience and assist the young. As we have said before the type of advanced training, especially in the field of leadership, not only in lifesaving but also in private life, is second to none. Sunshine will have eight in attendance and Noosa will have four in the Under 14 category and five who will assist as Leader/Mentors. This latter group usually consists of club

members who have attended previous camps. Passing of a true pioneer THE lifesaving world not only in Queensland but throughout Australia has been saddened by the recent death of one of our legendary figures Professor Tess Crammond, AO OBE. This incredible lady, Life Member of both Surf Life Saving Queensland and Australia, was an innovator in rescue and resuscitation techniques and a pioneer of Expired Air Resuscitation. In 1961 she supervised testing of this resuscitation method on live volunteers; many of whom were

lifesavers, at St Andrew's Hospital Brisbane. Placed under general anaesthetic, they were kept alive using these new expired air resuscitation techniques. Amongst her many achievements were being a founder of the Australian Resuscitation Council and an advisor to the Helicopter Rescue Service. Those of us in the Noosa club who in the late 1960s were involved in competing in the blue ribbon event called R&R (Rescue and Resuscitation), will recall that when the expired air resuscitation section was

being performed, the great lady was always to be seen moving, from team to team along the beach watching the method being used by the resuscitator; her constructive criticism was always welcomed, noted and heeded by the judges and coaches. Today there are many people, not only Australians, but also overseas tourists, who visited our local beaches, walking around alive and well because of the outstanding contribution made by this lady and her team of experts. Fresh start for Nippers

SUNSHINE Beach Nippers went through a week of hell to earn a badge of honour these school holidays. The Sunshine Beach annual 'Hell Week' is a gruelling week of physical and mental challenges designed to push the Nippers beyond their comfort zone to emerge quicker, stronger and more bonded as a team. Over 45 Nippers suffered through long distance board paddles, mountain climbs, adventure races, orienteering, bicycle races, beach boot camp, tough-mudder-style races and an epic long distance swim, board and run race called the “Sunshine Gold”. Despite blisters, twisted ankles, chipped teeth, sore arms, board rash and tired eyes the Nippers survived the week and emerged heroes when they were presented with certificates and trophies to celebrate their victory.

THE 2016 Nippers season got off to a great start with a change of location to Peregian Beach where all Nippers got to experience the open conditions and hospitality of the local members. With Club championships only two weeks away, all ages were making the most of the two metre swell to hone their skills.

Sunshine Beach Nippers have survived a week of hell including a 7km paddle from Sunshine Beach to Noosa.

The changeable conditions gave the Nippers the experience of more open water and less protected conditions. This is a great preparation for those that compete at other locations as part of the season. Before starting, all Nippers practised their hand signals to make sure everyone stayed safe in the water.

After a few weeks off for the silly season, the Age Managers knew to mix it up on the day, with beach volleyball and some games in the surf. The UV is hitting extreme levels by 10am at the moment so a reminder to everyone to slip, slop, slap regardless of how early you leave for the beach.

NOOSA will play host to one of the most popular European football clubs during a four-day coaching clinic later this year. All eyes will be on the Noosa Lions Football Club when coaches from the Real Madrid Foundation pay them a visit in early April. The coaches will travel from Spain to Noosa for the four-day clinic which will hold seminars and training sessions for local players and coaches. Noosa Lions president Alinda Bryant said this was an exciting opportunity for the club. “It’s an amazing opportunity to have world class coaches in Noosa and not just for coaches, but for players too,” she said. Real Madrid boasts the world’s best players such as Cristiano Ronaldo, James Rodriguez, Benzema and Gareth Bale and has been charged with the responsibility of sharing and teaching players from all over the world the Real Madrid Coaching Methodology.

Coach Jeff Ferrer has relocated from Manila where he has worked for the Gymnastics Association of the Philippines for the last 10 years. Mr Ferrer brings a plethora of knowledge and experience as a former national team competitor in the Philippines

and was former trainer for the South East Asia Games. Mr Ferrer joins the club bringing great energy and knowledge and is keen to work with the club's other coaches in developing some high performance gymnasts.
