The What Year In Review made news in 2015 SEE INSIDE
Spirit of service By LACHLAN MOORHEAD OUR people of the year are long dead. But age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. In 2015, on the eve of the Anzac Centenary, Star News paid tribute to the local men and women who put their lives on the line to serve during WWI. Many of them never returned to the suburbs of Berwick, Narre Warren, Cranbourne and their surrounds, the places they once called home. But within our pages their stories came to life, reinforcing not only their rightful place in local history but also as significant chapters in Anzac lore. Readers were told of the baker’s boys – eight men employed by local Narre Warren baker Donald Hartley Rowe, who all enlisted to fight in World War I. A November 1915 edition of the Berwick News reported their names as Harry McGuire, Alf Rooney, Harold Johnstone, Jack Lyons, Fred Lewis, Vic Chitts, Reg Currie and Geo Forrester. Narre Warren and District Family History Group member Jane RivettCarnac spent weeks poring over old records to find out who these eight men were, and helped the News unearth their stories. Some proved easier to identify then others. Mr Rowe, the local baker, is recorded on an electoral roll as having left the Narre Warren district by 1925. We also learned about the Kent brothers, two Narre Warren siblings whose lives were both claimed in the Great War. The first of the Narre Warren siblings to perish in battle was Alfred Ernest Kent, killed in action on 5 May 1916, four weeks after the lance-corporal had sailed from Alexandria to Marseilles. He was 41.

According to notes collated by the Narre Warren and District Family History Group, Alfred was buried in Y Farm Military Cemetery Bois-Grenier, 4000 yards south of Armentieres. Alfred’s younger brother, Norman Archibald Kent, died from a gunshot wound to the chest he sustained while serving on the Western Front in 1917. Norman was wounded on 12 April and died a day later from the injury. He was buried at the Vaulx Main Dressing Station, one and a quarter miles northeast of Bapaume, France. On his tombstone were inscribed the words “Son of A.B. and M.A. Kent Narre Warren, died for King and Country”.
With each story, with each act of bravery, we were continually reminded of the sobering tragedy of war. Rupert Bethune, a Cranbourne State School student, was one of the soldiers to be left behind on the battlefields, never forgotten by his mother Anne Meade when he was killed at only 27 years of age. A private in the 21st Battalion, 8th Reinforcements, when he first enlisted, Rupert died as a lance-corporal serving in the 59th battalion on 19 July 1916. He remains buried in France along with around 3000 other Australian soldiers who were killed on the Western Front during the battle of Fromelles.
Stories were also told of living relatives whose ancestors fought. Carole-Ann Kerford shared a special bond with her late grandfather – she was the first person he really opened up to following his experiences in World War II. It’s with this unique relationship in mind that Carole-Ann from Cranbourne North trekked the Kokoda Track last year. Meanwhile we learned that Harkaway always served as a constant in the life of nurse Jessie Traill, both before and after her service in WWI. When one reads the notes, it’s clear
that in her later life the talented artist Jessie spent much of her time at home in Harkaway, finding sanctuary in the five-acre bush block she had bought in 1912 with her sister, Elsie. Sanctuary, perhaps, from the three and a half years of service she’d given as a Red Cross Voluntary Aid Detachment Nurse (VAD) at the military hospital in Rouyen, France, from 1915. In 2015 the News paid tribute to the fallen soldiers, the returned soldiers, the nurses, the war widows, the living relatives and so many more who embody the spirit of the Anzac. Lest we forget.

PLANS to transform parts of the Cranbourne-Pakenham rail line into an elevated “sky rail” have been submitted to the State Government a part of their promise to remove 50 level crossings across Victoria by 2022. Reports have outlined the ‘secret’ plans for a raised rail, two to four storeys above street level and running for several kilometres. Shadow Minister for Planning David Davis has hit out at the
idea, labelling it a “cheaper option” compared to underground lines and one that would “split communities in half”. “There was a clear promise before the election to put rail lines underground at level crossing sites,” Mr Davis said. “The negative visual and sound impacts will also result in falling property values in the vicinity of the elevated rail line.” But a spokesperson for Minister for Public Transport, Jacinta
Allan, said the sky rail was just one option for Melbourne’s busiest train line. “We promised to remove every level crossing between Dandenong and Caulfield and we are still considering the best way to do that,“ they said. While Mr Davis has expressed his concerns about how a sky rail could damage small businesses and retailers in the immediate area, RACV Public Policy General Manager, Brian Negus supports the State Government's decision
to “explore all options”. Mr Negus said while most of Melbourne’s recent rail grade separations had been rail-underroad, it should not be assumed that this was the only way, or the best way of removing level crossings. “Elevated rail is used successfully around the world and the concept of a so-called ‘sky train’ to replace level crossings could be feasible at a number of locations in Melbourne,” Mr Negus said.
Hey Jude! Residents need a hand DESPITE a big push from the City of Casey and Brookland Greens residents, Cranbourne MP Jude Perera has not answered desperate calls for a review into State Government provisions on share housing developments. A powerless Casey council and neighbourhood of angry Cranbourne residents want to change the State Government laws which mean share housing can go ahead without prior council planning approval or consultations with neighbours. And they have had no help from Mr Perera, despite numerous letters from Casey council officers. The site at 5 Concord Place in the ‘upmarket’ Brookland Greens Estate has been subject to several protests and two petitions to stop a proposed development of two 10-place share houses. Casey Mayor Cr Sam Aziz said the lack of council involvement in such developments was “absurd”. “These residents are concerned about the impact the rooming house will have on amenity and safety including parking and noise and their concerns are rightly justified,” Cr Aziz said. Prior to Christmas the City of Casey wrote to Mr Perera requesting he make “immediate and strong representations” to Minister for Planning
Richard Wynne to review the planning scheme provisions for rooming houses. But Cr Aziz said their correspondence was going unanswered “again”. Cranbourne councillor Geoff Ablett said the City of Casey had been requesting assistance from Mr Perera for almost 12 months. “Mr Perera has done nothing, and hasn’t even responded to letters seeking his involvement. “We are calling for a review ... and as an interim step, amend the planning scheme provisions to prohibit the establishment of further rooming houses (in Casey) without a planning permit,” Cr Ablett said. Locals have labelled the proposal an “absurd situation”. They fear the type of person the share houses, which could hold up to 20 people, could attract to their estate. Former Casey Councillor Peter Giles, who lives adjacent to the site, approached the City of Casey in December last year proposing court action on behalf of the affected Casey residents. But acting CEO at the City of Casey, Peter Fitchett, said it would be a fruitless legal battle. “Council can only initiate legal proceedings against the development if there was a breach of planning laws,” Mr Fitchett advised.

Cr Ablett along with Shadow Minister for Planning Hon David Davis will be speaking to anxious residents at a meeting on Monday 25 at the Cranbourne Turf Club at 6pm. The News unsuccessfully sought comment from Mr Perera.

Ram raiders hit party store THIEVES rammed a car into the rear entry of Lombard The Paper People’s Fountain Gate store in the early hours of Monday 11 January and stole $8000 in cash before police arrived. The store on Victor Crescent in Narre Warren was raided between 1.30am and 1.50am after the power to surrounding shops was shut down. Registers and safes were searched in Lombard’s before the raiders struck neighbouring Captain Snooze by forcing their way in through a back door. A CCTV camera was smashed inside the bedding store but a power loss warning alarm alerted police to the incident. Several police units responded but arrived after the raiders had escaped. Police are currently reviewing other CCTV footage for leads.

Plan’s framework By LACHLAN MOORHEAD A DRAFT programming plan for Casey council’s new cultural precinct was adopted last month. The visual arts programming framework for the upcoming Bunjil Place was adopted after a community forum in October. More than 30 residents attended the event, which was initiated by Deputy Mayor Wayne Smith, to ensure the visual arts community was consulted in the planning for Bunjil Place. “On the day, we presented attendees with a draft programming framework, proposed themes for the gallery, opportunities and spaces that will be available for Casey’s local visual arts community and example applications of the programming
framework for Bunjil Place when it opens in 2017,” Cr Smith said. “Feedback provided at the forum was integrated into the development of the Bunjil Place Programming Framework which will guide planning for the gallery and future use of the precinct. “Council will continue to engage with the community as we establish our art exhibitions, activities and other opportunities at Bunjil Place. “It is important that the community are involved throughout the life of the project so that Bunjil Place truly represents the Casey community and beyond when it opens.” The new framework comes as Brookfield Multiplex Constructions was recently chosen to bring the $125 million Bunjil Place project to life.
In November the construction giant met with Casey council to formalise the agreement. The construction, which will continue for the next two years, will create the only regional community facility of its kind. Brookfield’s managing director Graham Cottam said his team was thrilled to take on a “one-of-a-kind project”. “Brookfield has industry-leading, internationally accredited systems and processes and we are ready and excited to hit the ground running and work with the council and Casey community to deliver Bunjil Place by late 2017,” Mr Cottam said. The new facility will include an 800-seat theatre, studio, art gallery, community library and meeting rooms, civic centre and council offices.
Speeding Pplater nabbed AN ALREADY disqualified Berwick P-plate driver was caught speeding 90 kilometres per hour over the limit in Cheltenham. The 22-year-old was caught driving at 150kp/h in a 60kp/h zone along Centre Dandenong Road about 8pm on Monday 11 January. The driver, who was already disqualified, had his Honda Civic impounded for 30 days. He is expected to be charged on summons with driving while disqualified, exceeding the speed limit and other traffic offences.

Moved in, ripped off A newly-married couple setting up home together had wedding presents stolen in a spate of thefts targeting people moving home. Police said the newly-weds, who had just returned from their honeymoon, were one of two Casey families to be hit while they were in the process of moving into their new homes. Detective Senior Constable Michelle Chiang from the Narre Warren police said: “People moving houses are easy targets for burglar-
ies, because everything’s boxed up ready to go.” Thieves stole several boxes from the couple’s home in Cradle Avenue, Clyde, between 4pm and 6pm on Saturday 9 January. “It was a two-hour turnaround from going to get the next load and they had just returned from their honeymoon that morning - it was all brand new stuff and wedding presents,” Sen Const Chiang said. The previous night a Caucasian male driving a black Commodore was seen leaving the address in Endeavour Hills around the time of
the burglary at midnight on Friday 8 January. Sen Const Chiang said “pretty much everything was stolen” from the Power Street home. “A BBQ, TV, washing machine and some boxes.” The raider forced their way in to the property through a rear timber window and Sen Const Chiang urged anyone moving in or out of the area to be vigilant. “It’s a small trend occurring in Casey and it’s something people who are moving house need to be wary of,” she said.
“If you’re moving house keep garage doors locked and be vigilant at both addresses and watch who is driving past and who’s observing you. “Try and organise someone to stay at the house with the boxes while the other person does the picking and dropping off because it’s easy to forget boxes when your moving dozens of them and often people don’t realise they are missing until they need it.” She appealed for witnesses to phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

IT’S disappointing that Ms Caldwell’s letter (Giving Away Our Money, News, 17 December 2015) failed to share the full facts about council’s recent trees and infrastructure focus groups with readers. Ms Caldwell is correct that focus group participants received payment but she failed to mention that participants of the latter focus group were asked to give up seven hours of their time on a Saturday. This is a considerable ask and that’s why it’s only fair that participants were reimbursed for their time. For large scale consultations such as these it’s not unusual for council to make a payment to participants in respect of their time. This is consistent with standard consultation industry practice to pay participants involved in lengthy focus group participation. Given the size of the municipality it’s imperative we have a sample that reflects the city’s demographics, ensuring feedback truly represents the views of the community. This year council will launch its first Community Engagement Strategy. In addition to the recent focus groups, we’re currently undertaking door knock surveys across the municipality to ensure council’s consultation program reflects what residents want. Austere warning THE past year was when austerity dominated Federal Government policy. May and December were really very low points in Australian politics in 2015. Due to former Treasurer Joe Hockey’s radical spending cuts in May followed by the current Treasurer Scott Morrison’s cuts in the December budget update, the Australian economy is now set for a long period of underemployment and reduced incomes for middle and lower income groups. Both Joe Hockey and now Scott Morrison have wrongly defined Australia’s economic problem as government spending and advocated the need to make deep budget cuts. Consequently, both Hockey and Morrison’s combined budget decisions in 2015 will strip more than $17 billion over four years from government spending on families, low income earners and community services. The underlying economic problems of unemployment, slow growth and weaknesses in aggregate demand are being ignored. Worst of all, the current Treasurer, Scott Morrison, has reversed a key macro-economic principle.
Cultural climate I take issue with the characterisation of religion as anti-educational (Cult Of Religion, News, 17 December). The subject of religion in schools is not dissimilar to other cultural studies including history, art and the media. In the current climate where Middle Eastern conflict in the name of religion is so topical, it is important that young people are able to understand the plurality and history of religion. Students and their parents should be free to choose whether or not to participate in religious studies. Choice was at the centre of previous policy for special religious studies. But sadly, the state Labor Government has broken its promise and taken that choice away, and I hear Christmas carols are also on the hit list for next year. Ashley Lodder, Berwick.

Casey Council’s support for Special Religious Education in state schools is truly educational. Casey parents and students, like all others, need a Bible-based faith. Christianity should be taught in all our state schools as a main part of the curriculum. Real education is about opening the mind to the purposes of God who created us. It is the major reason why our nation has prospered so greatly. When the first school opened in Australia in 1793, the Christian faith was taught, with the Bible as the main textbook. This gave our people the most vital education we all need - a truly sound foundation for our progressive nation. At least some of our councillors do believe this, and thank God for those who do. Every Easter Luke and his family - his mother, Rachel, his father, Tim, and his younger siblings Matthew and Lauren - stay with relatives and friends at the Candlebark camping area in the Lake Eildon National Park for the long weekend. The Shambrooks arrived at the camping ground on Thursday afternoon and had breakfast with Luke the next day, but later on Friday morning the young boy took it upon himself to go on an adventure. Luke’s ordeal is a memory now but those four nights were the longest of Rachel and Tim’s lives.

Anzac service threatened BERWICK RSL President Ray Heathcote moved to reassure the Casey community after an alleged terrorism plot targeting Anzac Day services in Melbourne’s south-east was foiled by police. The reassurance comes as three teenage men were charged after a 200-strong joint state and federal police counter-terrorism team executed seven search warrants in Narre Warren, Hampton Park, Hallam and Eumemmerring on Saturday morning, as part of Operation Rising. Police in Britain also arrested a 14-year-old in the UK on Saturday believed to be connected with the alleged Islamic State-inspired terror plot in Melbourne. Reports surfaced that there was a terrorism plan involving possibly a car to run over a police officer at an Anzac Day service, attacking the officer with an edged weapon and Police were on site at the Endeavour Hills Anzac shooting with the officer’s firearm. EVERY week there seemed to be another home invasion in Casey in 2015. Star News reported extensively on the spate of home burglaries in the municipality over many months in which thieves broke into houses, often through unlocked doors, stole keys and used them to make off with the occupant’s car. In December it was reported how police arrested several young members of a so-called ’Apex Gang’ who had broken into homes to steal car keys and vehicles in Melbourne’s south-east in recent weeks. But Detective Senior Sergeant Rod Moroney from Casey CIU, said the crime spate extended wider than just the Apex Gang members, who were typically aged between 15-25.

Nicole’s drive is an inspiration NICOLE Ryan reckons the Relay For Life saved her dad. Nicole, the mastermind of the CranbourneNarre Relay For Life, officially stepped down as chairwoman in 2015 and shared her inspirational story at the fourth annual event in November.
It was just after Christmas about 12 years ago and Nicole’s father, Clive, had been diagnosed with prostate cancer. In Nicole’s words, her dad just “shut down”, he didn’t want to talk about his illness, and with nowhere left to turn for help, Nicole rang the Cancer Council.

THE story of Wesley Koni – who as a young child fell into a fire inside his family’s grass hut home in the Eastern Highlands of Papua New Guinea – came full circle last year. In May, 2015, Channel Nine’s 60 Minutes aired the heartwrenching conclusion to Wesley’s story, in which the now rehabilitated young adult returned to his home village to see his mother and father, more than 20 years after he was first taken to Australia. Berwick doctor Malcolm Linsell, who was a member of the Cranbourne Salvation Army at the time, was the first surgeon to operate on three-year-old Wesley, after a fellow volunteer working in PNG read about the Berwick man’s skills and sought his help. In late March, 1993, the Casey community raised $20,000 to ensure Wesley could make the journey to Australia, where he was operated on by Dr Linsell.
They suggested her family take part in the Casey Cardinia Relay for Life. Seeking to start up her own cancer fund-raiser, Nicole set the wheels in motion to run her own event, and by 2012 the CranbourneNarre Relay For Life was started up, with Nicole, her sister, and her dad
Documentary focused on violence
United by News over the seas THE nephew of a British soldier killed in the Vietnam War used a Berwick News article to track down his uncle’s best mate from Australia who he fought alongside more than 40 years ago. Machine gunner Eric Halkyard was killed in February 1971 by a grenade as he lay next to his close friend and ally, Bill Rogers, during a gun battle in the high hills of Phuoc Tuy province, in South Vietnam. On the eve of Anzac Day last year Bill, 69, of Berwick, shared with the News the agony of losing his best mate while Bill had been medevaced out of the battle with severed nerves in his

Even better, he and his wife, Sheila, had already planned to travel to Melbourne and were able to meet up with Bill for one day.
CAN violent men change? The question lingered in viewers’ minds long after they finished watching the documentary Call Me Dad. The documentary, which aired on Thursday 26 November on the ABC to coincide with the White Ribbon initiative, focusing on the inner workings of a men’s behavioural change group in Narre Warren. Over 16 weeks last year, independent filmmaker Sophie Wiesner chronicled the men involved in the group Heavy METAL – short for Men’s Education Towards Anger and Life. The documentary focuses on three men in particular – each a father and perpetrator of violence – and their families.

The Purchaser must enter into an agreement with Council pursuant to section 173 of the Planning & Environment Act 1987 to be recorded on the title to the Road requiring the Purchaser to construct a cul-de-sac at Renee Court.

State squad for Emily By JARROD POTTER ROB Schneider might be a lot more locally relevant than just his bitparts in Adam Sandler movies. After all, the American actor and his comedy-baseball film, “The Benchwarmers”, helped inspire Pakenham baseball player Emily Devine, who decided she wanted to start her own baseball story. After watching and rewatching the film, Devine, 12, from Pakenham, made the decision to join the Pakenham Pumas Baseball Club and she has never looked back. “It was actually a movie I was
obsessed with – Benchwarmers,” Devine said. “I just really wanted to give it a go and one day my mum brought me down and I had a go and loved it.” “It’s so much fun, with all my friends here (Pakenham Pumas) in the Under-14s in winter and Under15s in summer.” Nearly two years later – after working her way up the ranks – that decision has paid off handsomely for the Pumas' slugger as Devine has been called up to the Victorian Women’s Youth team. She’ll pack up the bat and glove and head to Canberra for this year’s
National Youth Women’s Championships where she’ll face off against the best Under-16s in the country. Devine was thrilled to earn her Victorian place and her hopes are just as mighty as her hits from the wheelhouse. “Basically, it’s just really exciting and I feel very proud and honoured,” Devine said. “I’d love to win it and I can’t wait to meet lots of new people, get a lot of new friends and just play the game.” She hopes to be behind the plate as well as the team’s catcher but doesn't really mind where she’s

She’s got an eye out for senior women’s baseball as soon as possible and will journey out to Springvale to join the Big Cats. Devine wanted to thank her parents and her baseball coaches for their support.
Night of fun for kids By DAVID NAGEL PARENTS looking to break the monotony of the Christmas school holidays can pack the kids in the car and head to the Pakenham Racing Club next Thursday for the Cardinia Shire – Kids Night Out. The twilight race meeting will feature a range of fun-filled kids’ activities including face painting, jumping castle and petting zoo, while Kelly Sports will keep the kids entertained with arts, crafts and sporting activities. The evening will also feature the return of the Kids Race down the home straight with six bikes up for grabs for the winners of each age group – boys and girls races in the 10-12, 7-9 and under 6 age brackets. Gates open at 3pm with eight exciting races scheduled from 4pm to 7.45pm.
The Cardinia Shire – Kids Night Out will be the first of nine Thursday twilight meetings to be held at Racing.com Park over the months of January, February and March. Three times a champ By JARROD POTTER WHAT a difference a year can make. Amy Tyrrell was over the moon when she picked up two medals at the 2014 Australian School Sport Australia 12 and under Track and Field Championships... so it is not hard to imagine how thrilled the Victorian schoolgirls’ athlete was to win three gold medals at last year’s event in Canberra. Tyrrell, 12, from Berwick, is now a three-time national champion after her stellar meet – with individual titles in the 200m and the long jump as well as helping defend Team Vic’s 800m medley title. The champion sporting all-rounder narrowly missing out on the 2014 long jump gold medal – downed in the final by 1cm – but she worked on her technique last year and found the winning edge to jump 5.37m in a massive personal best. “I was having lots of different issues trying to work out my technique and dad, my coach, we spent a lot of time trying new things out,” Tyrrell said. “I was winning until the third jump and then a girl was in front of me by one centimetre, and last year I lost by one centimetre, so I thought I didn’t want to lose again. “But then when I pulled off that 5.37m – I had changed my technique – and it was a really exciting moment when I jumped that far after all that we went through.” She started off the meet with another PB – scorching the field in the girls’ Under-12 200m to earn her first individual national championship. “I qualified first in the heats and only by a little bit but anything could happen in the final. “The final was later on in the day and I won and got a PB as well – I ran 26.12,” Tyrrell said. “I was still pumped when I finished the race but it was kind of like a relief after all the training that it could pay off.” She puts her success down to hard work throughout winter – where she also represented her state in the Team Vic Under-12 schoolgirls’ netball team – and also takes her mind off the monotony of playing only one sport. “It got me fit and it was something different, to take my mind off athletics,” Tyrrell said. She thanked her dad, mum, her running coach Steve and her family and friends for their help with her sporting ambitions.

Little ditty ’bout Jack and Ryan DDCA TURF 1 REVIEW - ROUND 7 (One Day) RESUMING the race towards the DDCA Turf 1 finals, Cranbourne pushed past Heinz with ease while Berwick and Springvale South went to the wire. BERWICK v SPRINGVALE SOUTH In the first of two top-four battles on Saturday Berwick (6/156) couldn’t muster enough to hold off Springvale South (8/158) despite a gutsy fightback from middle order tandem Jack Williams (47) and Ryan Crawford (26). Nathan Pilon (26) set the stage for the Bears but soon four quick wickets fell to Tim Ford (2/20) and Malinga Bandara (1/26) - exposing Berwick’s five and six. Crawford and Williams steadied the ship and then began to take to some of the youthful Bloods’ bowlers, especially Matt Wetering (1/25). Williams slapped the Bloods about the field, including two sixes into the crowd at Arch Brown Reserve before his swashbuckling innings was undone by Wetering. Crawford fell soon after but their work had given the Bears a strong platform to defend. Outside of evergreen allrounder Craig Slocombe (57), the rest of the Bloods first five struggled. With plenty of unavailable players and lacklustre batting from the top order following Jarrod Goodes’ (3/43) rampage, it left the hard yards to the premiership skipper as Slocombe found help from Jarryd Armitage (24) and Tim Ford (17). Slocombe’s smacking effort was brought undone by Berwick’s import leggie Williams (2/21), leaving the rest to the lower order. Ford and the 15-year-old keeper Nathan Villella (5no) grit their teeth to earn every run and push the Bloods home with seven balls remaining. HEINZ SOUTHERN DISTRICTS v CRANBOURNE Second versus fourth didn’t amount to much as Heinz Southern Districts (114) succumbed meekly to the might of Cranbourne (4/115). Martin Kelly (4/28) was sensational in his first change spell as he cleaned up Brad Downe (23), skipper Matt Cox (6), Michael
Davies (5) and Matt Downe (6) on the cheap. Steve Spoljaric (2/24) had started the Cobras’ demise after picking off Adam Semmens (12) and Hari Krishan (2). Injecting another much needed all-rounder into their top five, Cranbourne introduced Stuart Plunkett (3/15) and he immediately made his impact with blade and ball. Justin Davis (39no) made his return to first XI cricket at the right time as he was the only Cobra to strike back. Davis and Rob Davies (12) mounted enough resistance to push Heinz into triple figures. But 114 was not enough against the soaring Eagles as Matt Chasemore (39) and Plunkett (34) showed off a new look Cranbourne batting attack - one that can afford to push Spoljaric down the order and not suffer it would seem. The win keeps Cranbourne within striking distance of Springvale South while Heinz sits fourth with a fourgame break on the chasers. BUCKLEY RIDGES v NARRE WARREN Narre Warren (6/235) smashed finals contender Buckley Ridges (195) around Park Oval as the Magpies took their best win of 2015/16. Set up by magnificent work at the top of the order from Wendell Perumal (82), Kaushayla Weeraratne (63) and Janaka Liyanabadalge (40), Narre Warren surged to its biggest tally of the year as the home side struggled to curtail the Magpies’ flight. In response the efforts of Jarryd Straker (3/32) and all-rounder performance of Weeraratne (2/50) surged through the Ridges’ order, despite a gutsy resistance from Paul Rudd (50) and Matt Goodwright (45no). The win pushes Narre into 10th and marginally away from the relegation zone. HALLAM KALORA PARK v NORTH DANDENONG Only four men were needed with the blade as Hallam Kalora Park (2/196) flayed North Dandenong (8/177). After a strong start from young openers Ben Hilliard (59) and Jagveer Hayer (22) - reaping 88 for the first wicket - the cashing in continued in the middle order as Cory Booth (55no) and Leigh Booth (44no) finished the job with an unbeaten century stand. DDCA chase Shield glory By JARROD POTTER ONLY one match separates the Dandenong District Cricket Association’s Under 21 side from a rare three-peat in the Neil Wright Under 21 Shield competition. The region’s best up-andcoming cricketers have taken to the Shield with aplomb after dismantling Ringwood District Cricket Association on Sunday in the semi-final. Batting first, Ringwood DCA could only muster 141 from 37 overs as the DDCA surged through the order. The DDCA’s under-21 skipper Jordan Hammond (Hallam Kalora Park) was too strong for the
Ringwood attack as he claimed 4/15 alongside and Parkfield spinner Travis D’Souza (3/28). The chaos caused with the ball led to an even swifter response with the blade as the DDCA - who were on the hunt for its fourth grand final appearance in a row - only took 25.2 overs to finish the job and claim victory. Another Hallam Kalora Park/Parkfield tandem stepped up to guide the DDCA home as Jagveer Hayer (42no) combined with Joe Barrett (37) to put 62 on for the second wicket. Double-header action By DAVID NAGEL THE landscape of the West Gippsland Premier Division finals series will become a lot clearer this weekend with a massive one-day double-header set to define the season. Some of the key contenders for this year’s title will lock horns, with back-to-back reigning premiers Kooweerup facing a massive challenge to keep their hopes of a threepeat alive. The Demons, the talk of the town after losing to Upper Beaconsfield on Saturday, face the two best teams in the competition, Pakenham and Cardinia. Two losses and the Demons will have a 4-6 record, and deserve their predicament of a struggle for fourth place with Merinda Park and Upper Beaconsfield. But win both, and gain some much-needed confidence, and we face the prospect of a rampaging champion with a full-head of steam
under its belt and ready to defend its crown. But, for that to happen, the Demons’ form will need one hell of a turnaround. “To get 160 on the board and then choke them up a bit in reply,” was Upper Beaconsfield skipper Scott Pitcher’s plan heading in against the Demons. Richard North (38) controlled the destiny of the top order, with Pitcher (36) and Julian Bayard (21) helping their team achieve its first goal with a 54-run stand for the fifth wicket. Michael Wallace (37) put his horror start to the season behind him with a gutsy knock from the middle order while up-and-coming opener Ashan Wijayakumara (19) anchored in as the rot started from the top of the order by Matthew Worsnop (6/28). The Swans head to Ringwood for the first twodayer of the year this Saturday. Meanwhile the New Year started with a bang for Dandenong as it dispatched its southerly neighbour Frankston-Peninsula and earned a crucial bonus point. Cashing in on his first opportunity of the 2016, Brett Forsyth (103) was sensational in raising the bat for the 11th time in Victorian Premier Cricket. Perennial opening pair Forsyth and Tom Donnell (70) added 136 for the first wicket as the duo smashed through even an overly-negative Heat field to set the stage for a massive tally. “Being on holidays I really set myself for when I came back to finally get a 50 and hopefully kick on and get the victory,” Forsyth said. “I always think my strength is to bat deep and influence the game and that was something I was really pleased to have done on Saturday.” Dandenong host Monash Tigers this Saturday.

Road to Holden’s future By EWAN KENNEDY A LOT rests on Holden’s Cascada. The company hopes the model will see it through the difficult period of shutting down Australian manufacture and into the future of import-only cars. Holden has painted itself into a corner by creating the impression that all cars with Holden badges have been made in this country and the news that Holden is closing its Australian factories has hit sales. The reality is that cars with Holden badges have been imported from as far afield as Germany, Japan, South Korea, Thailand and Mexico and the Cascada is built by Opel in Poland. Opel opted for a soft-top rather than a folding hardtop for the Cascada/ Astra which tells everyone that you’re in a convertible even when you've been forced to shut out the weather. We initially felt the body behind the windscreen was rather too long; stretched out, even. But after spending time with the shape it grew on us, possibly because the upward sweeping lines in the sides help to shorten it visually. The convertible’s interior is classy, with sweeping lines enhanced by the exposed stitching. The dials are well placed and pass their messages at a glance. Naturally, Cascada has the Holden MyLink infotainment system.

Long low and sleek, Holden's new Cascada is all style. In this instance it has a seven-inch colour screen display with satellite navigation and Pandora, Stitcher and TuneIn Radio apps. It’s not particularly easy to use but with experience you will learn to find your way around without too much frustration. The 1.6 turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine has 125 kW power and 260 Nm torque and drives thorough a six-speed automatic transmission. There’s no manual option as in other vehicles in the Astra range. In addition to mandatory safety items such as airbags (dual front and side), ABS brakes and electronic stability control, the Cascada also comes
with two IsoFix child-seat anchorages; a reversing camera; automatic lights and wipers; and front and rear parking sensors. Legroom is somewhat restricted in the rear so compromises between those in the front and back will often be necessary. However, Cascada is significantly better than most in this class due to its long body. Boot space is reasonable because soft-tops need less space to stow the roof than do folding hardtops and the rear seatbacks have a 50/50 split for passenger/ luggage compromise. The extra mass of the convertible body (which needs extra metal under
the floor to make up for the strength lost by removing the roof) takes the edge off its performance. Unlike the Astra hatch that has 147 kW power and 280 Nm torque if you opt for the six-speed manual, Holden Cascada is automatic only. If you’re looking for a high-performance open-top car then Cascada isn’t it, but as a cruiser it’s excellent. The engine’s peak torque runs all the way from 1650 to 4500 revs so most drivers will be running with maximum torque virtually all day, every day. Fuel consumption was reasonable, about six to seven litres per 100 kilometres on motorways and country
roads, rising to eight to 10 litres around town. On smooth roads the Cascada is exceptionally quiet and comfortable while rough roads do generate some scuttle shake. However this is probably the most comfortable open-top car we have ever experienced. Handling is on the soft side and is unlikely to appeal to those who enjoy early Sunday mornings on their favourite mountain roads. Wind buffeting and noise is minimal, even when the windows are down and we did a trip of a couple of hours under the stars that will remain in our minds for a long time.
