Rubber hits the road By LUKE VOOGT CLIFTON Springs teacher Philip Bignoux will ride his first Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race this month, just a week after his 40th birthday. Phillip said completing the ride would something he could look back on with pride. “I want to do it while I’m young and fit enough,” he said.
“I think it will be an amazing experience.” The father-of-two will ride 111km in the Momentum Energy People’s Ride, which he said was easily the farthest he’d ridden. “It’s kind of scary,” he said. “There’s going to be a lot of crosswinds in the open areas.” Philip can’t wait to join “the great line up” of 3000 riders, which in-
cludes champion cyclist Mark Cavendish and, of course, Cadel Evans. “When we get to the finish, we’ve done the same thing they’ve done,” he said. “You feel like you’ve accomplished something.” Cheering him on at the sidelines will be his wife and his daughters. Phillip remembers riding a lot more when the girls were little.

“I used to ride with them in the bike trailer to Queenscliff, to give my wife a break,” he said. Phillip said he’s always loved riding, which has led to a strange collection in his shed. “I’ve kept every bike I’ve had so there are probably 14 bikes in there,” he said. “Each bike has little journey attached to it.”
Phillip has been training by crosstraining and riding from Drysdale Station to Ocean Grove - roughly 20km - a couple of times each week. He used to run half-marathons but started riding regularly again after a running injury. “I think that window is closing,” he said.

January DRYSDALE residents were shocked by the bashing of a local woman in her backyard on 6 January. The woman was attacked at her High Street home while she was hanging out the washing and her two children were inside. This horrific crime, along with several burglaries and car thefts, led to more than 100 people meeting at Springdale to discuss Drysdale’s crime problem. Leanne Stratford and 30 other local volunteers formed the Drysdale Neighbourhood Watch soon after. The Neighborhood Watch pledged to be “the eyes and ears” for local police, and they’ve been keeping an eye on crime since. In happier news, local resident Dorothy Wheelahan completed her
2000th workout at Curves Drysdale, at the spritely age of 75. The Drysdale and Clifton Springs Community Association (DCSCA) continued its fight against the then proposed petrol station at the entrance to town. At the time Caltex franchisee Milemaker was planning to build petrol station between Jetty Road and High Street, near the Portarlington Highway roundabout. The DCSCA called on VCAT to review Geelong Council’s support for the petrol station and organised a petition against it. Drysdale band Audemia was the first band to record a music clip at Geelong’s Powerhouse, with its debut video “Invisible Prison”.
The Drysdale Bypass moved one step closer to being built, with Bellarine MP Lisa Neville announcing $2m would be fasttracked from the State Budget. The funds were moved forward so VicRoads could begin planning the bypass, which Ms Neville said could be built by 2017/18. Geelong Cats players visited Drysdale, hosting clinics at Drysdale and Clifton Springs Primary Schools and St Ignatius College. The players posed for photos and signed autographs for the star-struck students. Police made “significant inroads”
AS Drysdale commemorated the Centenary of Anzac Day, World War II veterans, doctors Bruce Jones and John Tucker shared their stories. Both became GPs after the war. Dr Tucker served in Papua New Guinea from 1943 to 1944, treating wounded soldiers and took part in an amphibious landing in Borneo, in 1945. Bellarine Railway president David Price welcomed Public Transport Victoria recommencing Princess Street crossing upgrade, after an accident in April. “We only need one collision for a fatality to occur,” he told a meeting at Springdale Community Centre later that month. A Bellarine Railway train collided with a ute on 19 April. Nobody was injured. The upgrade was delayed by unexpected pipes and work recommenced after PTV completed a re-design with Barwon Water. The upgrade was completed in June. Olivia Sheen and her mother Michaela walked in the 3.5km “Breathe Life for Cystic Fibrosis” on 19 April, to support Cystic Fibrosis Geelong. It was the first time taking part in the walk for Olivia, who herself has cystic fibrosis. Meanwhile, Drysdale and Clifton Springs Community Association’s appeal against Milemaker was struck down by VCAT, allowing the company to commence work. VCAT invited Milemaker Petroleum to apply for costs and a few days later DCSCA received a letter saying that Milemaker intended to recover the costs. Works began on the new petrol station in Drysdale.

March As the Centenary of Anzac approached, WWII veteran Ernie Truman shared his wartime story with Voice. Mr Truman, 94, is part of rare group of survivors called the Caterpillar Club, who have bailed from a falling aircraft using a parachute. His Lancaster was shot out of the sky on 28 January, 1945, by a German Junkers night-fighter, during a mission over Stuttgart. Mr Truman remembers the plane “vibrating to bits” and wind screaming through cabin as he bailed-out with the rest of the crew. Bellarine Community Health CEO John Fendyk announced a $1.7m renovation and extension to modernise Drysdale Community Health Centre. Local hairdresser Sarah Williams and cabinetmaker Kate Elstone both won apprentice awards during March.
Rotary celebrated 40 years. 148638
May DRYSDALE Rotary Club celebrated its 40th birthday as 90 people gathered at Club Italia, along with 11 former presidents. In its 40 years the club has run 39 Art Shows and overseen the development of a Children’s Park at Point Richards. It has also arranged countless overseas trips to help people to recover from floods, earthquakes and other disasters. Selfless volunteers completed renovations to Rory and Pauline Wilson’s home, after a serious accident in 2014 left Rory paraplegic. In eight weeks the volunteers did everything from levelling the deck and making pathways around the lawn, to installing a new bathroom and insulation.

BELLARINE Secondary College congratulated its Dux for 2015, Clifton Springs student Stacey Van Rekum Ayres, who scored an ATAR of 88. “Stacey did this while juggling her role as college captain and involving herself in every leadership opportunity available,” college principal Alison Murphy said. Stacey plans to study a Bachelor of Arts in politics and international relations at the University of Melbourne.
Science in advanced global challenges at Monash. “Basically, you have to do a project where you implement change,” he said. Harry said this could involve anything from tackling mental health to finding ways to recycle or donate left overs from restaurants. He’s fed his humanitarian ambitions throughout school, visiting Ecuador and Timor Leste to try to improve the lives of others. “I’ve always enjoyed the reward of doing something for others,” he said. Emily is saving for Falls Festival, while Harry said he’s saving for university, after two fun weeks in Bali. He’ll be doing a leadership course in Ballarat later this year, along with 28 other students. St Ignatius also congratulated Meg Wiffen, who scored an ATAR of 92.35 and more than 40 in four subjects, including a whopping 49 in health.

Top marks for Stacey
ST Ignatius congratulated three high-achieving students recently, who all achieved more than 90 in their ATAR. Emily Harwood scored 93.7, scoring high in health (42), PE (41) and English (40). She’s not sure exactly what her future holds, but she knows she wants to work in medicine. Her dream is to volunteer overseas, and she’s already had a taste of it, during a school trip to Timor Leste. “It struck me how different access to healthcare is over here to over there,” she said. “The rural communities only get help because someone has a couple of hours to work on them.” Fellow graduate and college captain Harry Stannard, scored just 0.1 less, with 93.6. “We’ve been competitive for ages so it was nice to beat him at the end,” Emily joked.

BELLARINE MP Lisa Neville said local police resources will be boosted in this year’s state budget. A number of schools on the peninsula received budget funding, including Drysdale Primary School (DPS) and Bellarine Secondary and St Ignatius College. DPS principal Phil DunlopMoore said his school received $3 million to replace eight temporary classrooms and refurbish other rooms. The Springs Milk Bar returned to life last month after being devastated by fire in November 2014. Owners Andrew Rhook and Margaret Bryden were ecstatic to re-open the store on 18 June. Workers began extensions and renovations at the Drysdale Community Health Centre as the main contractor took possession of the site. Bellarine Community Health (BCH) contracted Lyons Construction of Geelong to deliver the $1.7 million project on 17 June and work began soon after. Drysdale’s St James Church launched its cheeky ‘Bare Necessities’ calendar to raise funds for its recently restored hall. Parishioner Pauline Cline described the calendar as “extremely colourful” with “various bits of clothing missing”.
BELLARINE Secondary College (BSC) would benefit from $335,413 in funding announced by the State Government. The funding was not new, but rather previously un-allocated money from the 2015/16 state budget. Local angling club president Andrew Johnson welcomed a recent State Government grant, which would see a new fishing jetty constructed in Clifton Springs. The funds will help Geelong Council design the jetty and build it off an existing rock wall, out into Port Phillip Bay.
More than 250 people keen to improve Drysdale’s roads attended a VicRoads consultation at Springdale Community Centre. VicRoads asked for feedback on three issues affecting

SCOTCHMANS Hill added to the Bellarine’s growing list of wine accolades, earning a top five place at the Great Australian Shiraz Challenge. Its 2013 shiraz was one of four wines to score 19 points at the competition, just half a point behind the winner. Drysdale and Clifton Springs Community Association breathed a sigh of relief after Milemaker Petroleum decided to waive its legal costs. VCAT invited Milemaker Petroleum to recover le-
gal costs after a failed application by DCSCA against a petrol station the franchisee was building in Drysdale, but Milemaker decided against recovering legal costs. Drysdale Neighbourhood Watch put its hopes in the Federal Government for CCTV on High Street after missing out on State Government funding. It was hoped that Labor MP Richard Marles would write a letter to the Prime Minister for the CCTV funding.

DRYSDALE business people saw commissioned glass at an exclusive preview of this year’s Glass Festival last month, and met the locals who created them. The commissioned pieces will be the prizes in a glass art Treasure Hunt - a feature of the sixth Festival of Glass the February. “The glass art Treasure Hunt is a novel blend of art and commerce,” Festival of Glass convenor Doug Carson said. “It’s a way for local businesses to be involved with the Festival and to benefit from it.” The preview was held at the Dax Design Studio in Drysdale and featured ‘Tiny Treasures’ that will be clues in the Treasure Hunt. From early February, each business will display its piece of glass art, together with its ‘Tiny Treasure’ for hunters to spot. The Treasure Hunt will culminate in a draw for dozens of pieces of glass art at the Festival Expo on 21 February at Christian College, Drysdale.

Drysdale Neighbourhood Watch is put its hopes in the State Government to get some much-needed CCTV coverage for the town. The group submitted an application for a Public Safety Infrastructure Grant to Geelong Council. The council then submitted an overall application for Geelong, for a State Government grant of $250,000. “We need to do something to protect our community and make people feel safe,” local Neighbourhood Watch member Leanne Stratford said. Young-adult author James Phelan spoke about his books at a St Ignatius College literature night. THE Drysdale Sporting Precinct Peninsula Drive facility received a timely funding boost after local council approved stage one works to commence by 2016/17. The City of Greater Geelong will contribute $6.726 million and committed to start works on site one year earlier after a council meeting at City Hall. Drysdale and Clifton Springs could be in line for more early education infrastructure. Geelong Council applied for State Government funding for a number of early childhood infrastructure projects identified for the region and the council was calling for Expression of Interest applications for children’s centres and new early learning facility projects planned to commence in four years. The bravery of an Ocean Grove father and son may have saved a Drysdale man’s life, as fire engulfed his property. Neil and Leigh Walker noticed smoke coming from a Drakes Street home and pulled over to call 000. “We were driving down the road and saw a lot of smoke,” said Leigh. “We just went in to see anybody was home.” It was then the two saw the owner attempting to put out a fire in the garage with a garden hose.

YET another of the Bellarine’s winemakers shook up the vines by taking out a major gong in the 2015 Qantas epiQure Halliday Wine Companion Awards. Terindah Estate came overall first in the Dark Horse Winery of the Year, heading off competition from around the country. Bellarine Secondary College Council (BSCC) welcomed Geelong Council’s decision to halt the sale of land behind the Potato Shed to St Ignatius College. Council voted to abandon the sale last Tuesday, as it was conditional upon a planned land swap with the Roman Catholic Trust Corporation (RCTC). Drysdale Neighbourhood Watch (NW) was putting its hopes in the State Government to get some much-needed CCTV coverage for the town. Drysdale NW president Leanne Stratford said crime was increasing in Drysdale. Already the town had several burglaries and a serious assault this year.

Strong winds fuel Murradoc Hill blaze By LUKE VOOGT STRONG north-west winds fuelled a fire east of Drysdale last November, as it tore through eight hectares of grassland. The fire burnt down a tree plantation, while metre-high flames damaged nearby fencelines. But it could have been a lot worse if not for the work of local firefighters. Drysdale CFA First Lieutenant Ross Labbett said crews prevented the fire from damaging croplands and a phone tower, as it blew up the hill.
“It was a fantastic effort,” he said. “There were strong winds everywhere.” The flames came within 10 metres of a Murradoc Road house, which firefighters also managed to save. “We steered it around the house as much as we could,” he said. Ross said a passing vehicle accidentally started the fire on the south side of Murradoc Road at about 3.30pm, 26 November. It took 20 CFA vehicles about an hour to bring the blaze under control.

Sneak peek at Drysdale centre THE Voice took a look at Bellarine Community Health’s new Drysdale Centre last month, which will reopen at the end of February. The construction phase of the $1.7 million development is almost complete and the finishing touches will commence this month. New features include modern, comfortable reception areas with improved access, larger spaces for walkers, wheelchairs or prams and a dedicated children’s play space. “The extension and renovation of the Drysdale Community Health Centre means we are able to service our clients in a high standard quality clinical environment,” Bellarine Community Health CEO John Fendyk said. “Two additional clinical spaces and other multi-purpose spaces have been created and the existing clini-
cal rooms are also being refurbished including new carpets and paintwork.” The footprint of the activity room on the ground floor has been extended and partitions added to allow for the room to be divided into three activity spaces for clinical and community use. “Work is also underway on a wonderful new multi-purpose outdoor area which can be used by many of our clinicians and clients,” Mr Fendyk said. “The design includes a new walking track which will greatly assist our podiatrists in assessing their client’s mobility.” Lyons Construction of Geelong and other local contractors will have delivered the completed project in less than eight months.

A fair of tranquility By LUKE VOOGT

ROUGHLY 6000 locals and tourists attended the 19th Tranquillity Fair last Saturday, which organisers have hailed as one of the most successful yet. More than 4000 adults bought tickets and Ocean Grove Park Association (OGPA) president, Murray Waugh, estimated 6000 people in total, with children attending for free. “That would have to be one of our highest attendances, if not our highest,” he said. “Even up until 4pm we still had a lot of people around.”
Dark skies threatened to spoil events in the morning but the sun broke through just before midday, providing fair-goers with warm weather the rest of the day. The Tranquillity Fair made use of the Ocean Grove Pavilion the first time this year, which Murray said made things run much more smoothly. He said the pavilion served as a storage space for the OGPA and allowed an easier transition between different performers. “It was fantastic – we didn’t have to hire a stage,” he said.
“There were more people watching the music than ever before.” The crowd enjoyed a wide range of music from Ebony De Lima, Velvet Bow, The Tides of Welcome, Steve McEwan and the Yesmen, Three Kings and Fulton. They also got involved in a drumming demonstration in the afternoon. Murray said the fair’s 125 stalls had already been booked-out by last November. “We even had people standing by if someone didn’t turn up,” he said. “That’s a tribute to Barb and Phil
Dix, who organise the stalls.” Barb said this year’s new stalls included delicious Turkish food and very popular “potato spirals”. With the amount of interest, she said she “could have had two fairs and filled them both.” The OGPA also provided free stalls for the Queenscliff Rural Australians for Refugees, Children in Cambodia and the CFA. Murray praised and thanked the fair’s 70 volunteers who manned the gates, and helped setup for four hours on Friday evening and at 5.30am Saturday.

Bellarine policing increases State View with Lisa Neville MP
BELLARINE police numbers and station staffing has been a serious concern on the Bellarine since station operating hours were severely slashed by the previous government in late 2014. It is very pleasing to report that the now State Government has gone a long way in fulfilling its commitment to restoring police station operation hours and increasing police numbers. In early December Police Commissioner Graham Ashton announced that the Drysdale and Portarlington stations would be reopening seven days per week and that Queenscliff would open four days a week at this stage. In addition, 15 extra police are being recruited to the region. These staffing arrangements will also take the pressure off the Ocean

Grove Station that was serving as the dispatch centre when the other stations were closed. I welcome these announcements as I know that community safety is a priority for Bellarine. 2015: A busy year As we move into 2016 it is interesting to look back briefly on the year that has just gone. From a State Government perspective 2105 was, as usual, a busy one on the Bellarine, with many local projects being announced and commenced across the peninsula. In Ocean Grove for example, with summer upon us I have been working with the Ocean Grove Surf Life Saving Club in having their club rooms refurbished and extended with a commitment from the State Government of $2.56 million. There is obviously no need for me to explain the importance of the
club to Ocean Grove, not only as an important rescue service, but also as a club for locals in pursuing a great sport and recreation outlet, while at the same time providing an important community service. And things like the clubs Nippers program is a wonderful way for local kids to be educated, kept active and involved in a great club. Over the wider Bellarine region other important projects are about to commence or have. For example, in Drysdale funding has been made available and planning has commenced for the much needed bypass. And funding for the towns new sporting precinct has just been Portarlington has seen its safe harbour project commenced which when finished will provide important modern infrastructure for the growing Bellarine aquaculture industry. The new harbour will also be
built to ensure a future Bellarine to Melbourne ferry could be operated. In addition, there are lots of other things happening in towns like Queenscliff, Barwon Heads and closer to town, Leopold. And across the region many of the local schools have received important funding for upgrade; ensuring Bellarine students are being taught in modern 21st century facilities. Finally as we have leave 2015 well behind, I would like to wish all Bellarine residents and visitors a very happy and healthy 2016. As always, please don’t hesitate to contact me by email or call my office if there are any matters that I may be able to assist you with directly. Canine’s knack for comforting patients By LUKE VOOGT OCEAN Grove psychologist Alison Lewis-Nicholson has a unique working partner at her Geelong practice: Bougal the six-year-old cavoodle. Alison said Bougal accidently fell into his role comforting patients. He was “free to a good home”, so she took him to work to see what
he was like. It was then Alison discovered Bougal’s unique knack for comforting patients. “I didn’t want to leave him home alone – I brought him to work and he just took up the role himself,” she said. “He’s very emotionally intelligent – he will go over and sit next
to people when they are anxious or upset.” Alison and Bougal won recognition at last month’s Cherished Pets Community Awards which celebrates pets’ contributions to wellbeing. Cherished pets held the awards on 12 December, in conjunction with Wallington’s WRG.
“I thought it was a great idea to get people recognising that pets have a role helping individuals, and that they are important in people’s lives,” Alison said. Alison has practiced psychology for 20 years and moved to Ocean Grove from Geelong seven years ago.

Theatre 3Triple2 for KiDs will bring their own twists to the classic play, which runs from 12 to 15 January. It’s Grand Royal Parade time and all the interest surrounds who will create the royal robes for the Emperor. Move over Georgio Armani - Horrie and Mor-

Theatre 3Triple2 for KiDs has been entertaining families at the Potato Shed for over 10 years.

OCEAN Grove travel agent Nicole Brian is already busy planning her next big trip to Africa this September, with three families signed up already. “You’ve got to plan early for this sort of thing,” she said. The tour will cross South Africa, as well passing through Zimbabwe and Zambia, and stopping at the picturesque Victoria Falls. The trip will focus heavily on conservation and education. “The reason we are doing it is our kids are very into conservation,” she said. “I wanted it to be educational - not just a Disney Land trip.” Nicole has been to Africa on similar trips and is using that experience to pack in as much animal-based fun as possible. The tour will visit the Jane Goodall Chimp Sanctuary and families can get up close with elephants at the Elephant Whisperers. “The kids can help feed and wash them,” she said. “It’s really hands-on.” The chimp sanctuary rescues chimpanzees that been orphaned, traded in the illegal pet market or traumatised for entertainment in circuses and beach resorts. The trip also includes a game of soccer with local children, while children on the tour will all get to donate a pair of boots each. Nicole said the enthusiasm from youngsters had been infectious. “It’s amazing how many kids have gotten involved,” she said. “It’s more the kids who are interested.” Swagman tours, whose owners Tracey and Wayne Hamilton are from Ocean Grove, are co-organising the trip. The majority of the trip will take place in South Africa. “We’ve chosen South Africa because it’s somewhere in Africa where people feel more comfortable taking their kids,” she said. Try out something different HAVE you made a resolution to lose weight and get fit? This is one of the most common New Year’s resolutions, says Penny Tompkinson from Step Into Life Ocean Grove. “With the New Year now upon us, you will either be going strong or have already fallen off the wagon,” she said. “If you are going strong great work, and keep it up. “If not, then trying something different may get you the results you are looking for. “If training alone or taking out a gym membership
hasn’t worked, now is a good time to seek out a personal trainer to assist you.” Penny says Investment in yourself is important, make it a priority and you will soon see a huge difference. “Be honest with yourself and your trainer and turn up,” she said. “The first three to four weeks are the hardest, if you are committed training soon becomes easier and more importantly exercise becomes a habit.” Find out more about Penny Tomkinson and Step into Life Ocean Grove at www. stepintolife.com

Who let the dogs out? By JEN CARR I HAVE to get on my Christmas soapbox now. I was so distressed at Blue Waters Lake to see a lady just allowing her staffies to run right through the reeded areas, which are habitat to many young birds. I was watching a young reed warbler at the time that the dogs just bustled through the area where I sat (fortunately the reed warbler survived), but I did find a dead Pacific black duckling. The Australasian grebe left it’s nest and did not return, and I couldn’t see any eggs on the empty nest. It was horrible to watch. I just wish people cared about the chaos that their animals caused in these areas and I wish people would obey the signs that say ‘PLEASE KEEP YOUR DOGS ON A LEAD’. It’s the same with the area along the Barwon River estuary at the end of Lelean St that says ‘NO DOGS’. Most of the time when I go down there to check on the migratory shorebirds that we are so lucky to share our habitat with, I see people just not caring and just letting their dogs splash around where the sign clearly says ‘NO DOGS’. Obviously there are many people who do not care and can’t read. Maybe this is a reason we don’t have any bartailed godwits here this year? Are signs not the answer? What can we do as a community
to tackle this problem? Please, please, please keep dogs under control around our wetlands and on beaches to give these birds some chance of surviving. It’s so distressing to watch and it’s something we can all take responsibility for. I love dogs, I own dogs, but they are on a lead and they don’t go near places where they could cause chaos.

We conserve, present and enhance the natural & developed coastal environs for the enjoyment and use of all
BARWON COAST Barwon Coast is a Committee of Management appointed by the State Government with responsibility for the management of 13km of coastal crown land from 7W Collendina to 42W Blue Rocks, Barwon Heads covering our beautiful beaches in Ocean Grove, Barwon Heads and 13thBeach. Our Committee members are local residents appointed with consideration of the skills and experience that they have to offer in the management of this important piece of coastline. NEW FORESHORE TOILETS Barwon Coast constructed two new ‘micro flush’ public toilets that were opened for public use in Mid-December. The ‘all access’ facilities are located at the Bridge Car Park on the Ocean Grove Spit, immediately east to the Barwon Heads bridge and the other on 13th Beach Road at the Beacon Car Park. The environmentally friendly facilities should be a welcome addition to the public infrastructure available to the local community and visitors alike. They come at a total investment cost of $200k by Barwon Coast. The Beacon Car Park toilet is pictured. DOG ON BEACHES Barwon Coast works closely with the City of Greater Geelong and this year COGG has purchased a special vehicle to improve patrols on public land. For the last few years an educative approach has been taken toward dogs on beaches and other public land. We ask that all dog owners practice responsible ownership and abide by the signage onsite. This year Penalty Infringements Notices will be imposed where necessary. PLAT IT SAFE BY THE WATER As we move into our summer beach season it is important to always swim between the flags at our locally patrolled beaches - Ocean Grove Main, Ocean Grove Spit 18W and 13th Beach Main where Life Savers & Lifeguards will be on patrol 7 days a week, for the peak holiday covering week from Boxing day to Australia day . At all beach access pathways we have installed Beach Safety Signs that provide advice on general water conditions, rocks, tide etc. and where the nearest patrolled beach is. Please take time to read those notices. Always be alert on the beach when with children and never swim alone.
No diving / jumping from jetty, promenade or bridge Tragically serious incidents have occurred in recent summers so it is really important to take personal responsibility for your safety when near the water, be it at the ocean or the river beaches. Dangerous activities such as jumping or diving off the Barwon Heads jetty, the promenade or the bridge can lead to serious injury especially back injuries. This year we have seen massive movement of sands along the beaches and at low river flows the water depth can be minimal, especially at low tide near the Jetty, so don’t do it! BARWON HEADS PROMENADE UPDATE Rebuilding of the seawall commenced on Monday 28th September and was completed by the 18th of December 2015. The construction of a new concrete promenade, including a handrail will begin after Australia Day. The promenade walk re-opened the week before Christmas. In the interest of public safety, all visitors to the area are asked to take note of the site signage and only walk as directed. SUMMER SHUTTLE BUS Leave your car at home or your caravan park and catch the free shuttle bus coordinated by Barwon Coast with financial support from valuable community aware sponsors. The free bus is operating from 27th December until 26th January commencing at 10am thru to 6pm with an hourly lap of Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads and the beaches starting at the Ocean Grove Post Office. The Shuttle Bus tows a trailer to carry beach gear including surf boards. I encourage you to contact Barwon Coast to discuss any issues related to coastal management in our region by phoning 5254 1118. Gary McPike General Manager

Grubbers the big BPCA improvers OCEAN Grove Cricket Club has been one of the biggest improvers in the Bellarine Peninsula Cricket Association A grade under the guidance of new coach Paul Jubber. At the mid-season point of the season, the Grubbers remain in contention to make A Grade finals after winning their first three games of the season. The Grubbers have claimed wins against Queenscliff in round one, Portarlington in round two and a narrow away win against Barrabool in round three. Some of the highlights this season include a stunning unbeaten 100 from Paul Jubber in his debut innings at Ocean Grove against Portarlington in round two. Youngsters Rob Procter and Lindon Gi-
uffrida, who has taken six wickets at 22, both have shown good signs with the ball and bat this season. OCEAN GROVE COACH PAUL JUBBER TALKS ABOUT THE YOUTH AT THE CLUB “We have really unearthed some young talent and we will continue to keep playing the young players. I think going forward this season we will continue with the youth policy and we will continue to develop the developing players at our club. From a longevity and I guess from a succession plan point of view to continue to develop those kids and so that we can be strong in the future.”
STAR PERFORMER Dan Roddis 10 wickets at 15.30

RUN HOME The Grubbers would need to win at least three of their last four matches to make the BPCA’s top four to play finals. A showdown against local rivals Collendina in round eight looms crucial if the Grubbers want to play A grade finals. Cobras looking to make the finals COLLENDINA Cricket Club A grade will be looking to cement a top four Bellarine Cricket Peninsula Association finals berth when games commence on Saturday 9 January. This season has been fruitful for the Cobras with wins against Barrabool, Queenscliff and two wins against bottom placed Wallington. The top order has clicked into gear at Collendina with consistent contributions from Richie Peters, Corey Walter, Ben Ricardo and Matt Davies with the bat. The Cobra batting quartet, have all made half-centuries this season. Charlie Lamb has been star for the Cobras with 14 wickets this season and will be contention for the league’s bowling aggregate at the completion of the season.
COLLENDINA CO-COACH COREY WALTER TALKS ABOUT THE TOP ORDER BATTING IMPROVEMENT. “We have put a bit of ownership on the batsman this season, we have pretty please that Richie Peters has made a few starts at the top of the order, Matt Davies has made two half-centuries, Ben Ricardo has made a couple of start a half-century and a 30 and couple of young kids like Max Sutton and Sam Walsh have made some runs. It is really pleasing, we are not relying on one or two guys with the bat, we are getting a nice even spread and that is what you need to be competitive.” STAR PERFORMER Charlie Lamb 14 wickets at 7.79
RUN HOME Early wins in the new year should sew up the Cobras top four A grade position. Collendina’s round eight home game against local rivals and fellow BPCA finals aspirant Ocean Grove will be a key game. Face a challenging run home run with three of the last four games are away from the Cobras home fortress. All of the opposition teams that Collendina face are in contention to make finals. Ocean Grover Nick Wightman and Natalie Mensch from Belmont won the men’s and women’s open events in the annual Rip to River. Wightman won with his time of 32:39 while Mensch ran 38:29. Dan Roddis took 6/44 for Ocean Grove to help defeat Collendina in a thrilling BPCA A grade game. The Grubbers won by one run against their cross-town rivals.

AFL Western Bulldogs 203-game veteran Ryan Hargrave, unveiled as one of Ocean Grove Football Club’s new recruits in 2015, takes part in pre-season training at Bellarine Secondary College’s Ocean Grove campus. A renowned defender, Hargrave’s signing was a major coup for the Grubbers. Ocean Grove defeated Newcomb outright to keep its faint A grade cricket finals hops flickering. Chris McSween took match figures of 10/40 to give the Grubbers maximum points. Collendina pace duo Charlie Lamb and Andy Higgins took all 10 wickets to give the Cobras a win against Jan Juc which propelled them into the top four. Grubber players chosen in an extended squad included new Ocean Grove ruck Andrew Jarvis and ex-Geelong West GFL defender Jahd Anderson. OCEAN Grove defeated Modewarre to claim its fourth win a row to square the ledger at four wins and four losses. The Grubbers were winless after the first four rounds but reeled off four consecutive wins. The local business community was urged to help support Ocean Grove Bowling Club based Australian Deaf Bowls representative Robyn Larkin. Larkin was one of 10 Australians that would play at the International Deaf Bowls Championships in Northern Ireland from 28 August to 9 September. Larkin was forced to cover her own flights, accommodation, uniform and food to play for her country. Ocean Grove marathon runner Kristie Jennings, 29, qualified for the 2016 Osaka Marathon in Japan after her time of 03:39:28 at the Great Ocean Road Marathon. The new Ocean Grove resident who moved to the Bellarine late last year from Melbourne’s west, was checking her junk emails when a oncein-a-lifetime trip was offered to her. News Shed proves in demand GEELONG councillors acknowledged the Potato Shed’s achievements over the last financial year at a recent council meeting. The Potato Shed had 97,315 visits in that period, with 76 theatre, dance and music performances, sellout shows and prolific touring productions. Geelong councillor and chair of the Potato Shed committee, Jan Farrell, said the venue was in high demand by a diverse range of community groups and performers. “Students of all ages know and love the venue with its wellequipped music rooms, dance studios and large performance space,” Cr Farrell said. Cr Farrell said the shed was a favourite venue for actor John Wood and musician Barry Morgan. “It is an important multi-arts space in the heart of the Bellarine,” she said. Cr Farrell said the Potato Shed’s Free Family Fun Day continues to be a success. “This year’s Family Fun Day attracted crowds of 7000,” she said. “The success of the venue can also be counted by the bookings as the Potato Shed operated at close to full capacity seven days a week over 14 hours a day.” Visit the Potato shed Facebook to find upcoming events www.Facebook.com/The-Potato-Shed
