Drivers beware “If you offend you will be caught. Everyone must play their part in road safety whether it is by complying with the road rules, enforcing them, or educating others in safe behaviours.” During last year’s Christmas period, 22 people lost their lives and there were 1649 crashes causing injury. Mr Byrne urged all road users to take extra care over the festive season. “Already this year we have seen too many funerals and too much trauma linked to road accidents. There have been 228 deaths already in 2015 and each fatality and every crash which injures or

maims is one too many,” he said. Acting Minister for Main Roads and Road Safety Leeanne Enoch also joined the launch and said drink driving caused one in five fatalities on Queensland roads and asked people to take precautions this holiday season. “The carnage that is unfortunately associated with driving at this time of year has to stop. If you are going to celebrate with a drink this Christmas and New Year season, make a plan before you head out,” she said. Last year over 500,000 breath tests were conducted by police with 3208 returning a positive reading. To avoid more carnage

on the roads Ms Enoch said it was simpler to stay safe by designating a driver. “Everyone processes alcohol differently, making it impossible to predict whether you’re under the legal limit or not. It is just so simple to stay safe by designating a driver, arranging a lift, catching a cab or public transport or staying at a mate’s house,” she said. “We need to thank and appreciate every designated driver for their consideration, good sense and goodwill as they are the people, along with the police, who will be making our roads safer this festive season.”

POLICE have launched their holiday road safety campaign to help curb the carnage on our roads this festive season. Commissioner Ian Stewart joined Police Minister Bill Byrne to launch the Queensland Police Service (QPS) Christmas road safety campaign. Mr Stewart said the campaign would focus on speeding, drink or drug driving, fatigue, seat belts and distraction and said police would be highly visible during a state-wide operation throughout December and January. "A number of operations will take place throughout the state and we will continue to enforce the road rules,” he said.

Airport numbers take off SUNSHINE Coast Airport has continued its positive growth trend, with six consecutive months of year-on-year growth in passenger numbers and a third consecutive month as the fastest growing major airport in Australia. November statistics show 79,905 passengers used flight services at Sunshine Coast Airport during the month, which is a 10 per cent increase on the previous 12 months and the sixth consecutive month of year on year growth. Further confirming the trend, the Commonwealth Bureau of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Economics (BITRE) data for September showed Sunshine Coast Airport experienced a 13.8 per cent jump in total passengers for September compared to the same period 12 months ago, again making it the fastest grow-

ing airport in the country. The airport experienced a 13.2 per cent rise in domestic and regional airline passenger numbers as well as a 32.4 per cent increase in international travellers. The other two airports rounding out the top three positions were Gold Coast Airport (8.1 per cent total passenger growth) and Melbourne Airport (6.2 per cent total passenger growth). Sunshine Coast mayor Mark Jamieson welcomed the new figures. “These figures reinforce the strong results the airport has received throughout 2015, including posting a record first quarter of the new financial year and a number of new monthly records,” Cr Jamieson said. “We are seeing giant leaps forward in passenger demand for what our airport offers and there is still so much more potential there. “Options to and from the Sunshine Coast are set to become even greater for travellers from this month with Air New Zealand starting its first summer season flights from Sunday (13 December).” Sunshine Coast Airport general manager Peter Pallot said he was excited to be welcoming the Air New Zealand summer flights. “The Sunshine Coast to Auckland services have been a great success over the winter months but being able to fly direct in summer opens up a whole new dimension in flying local,” Mr Pallot said.

4 Ingredients author Kim McCosker launched the Fly Local campaign this year urging locals to use the Sunshine Coast Airport. “Sunshine Coast residents can now easily visit family and friends in New Zealand for the festive season or enjoy a summer holiday in Auckland.” December has also seen the return of Qantas to the Sunshine Coast. Flights started on 21 December, with flight

timing designed to meet the needs of the holiday traveller through until 31 January. From 8 February a business-friendly flight schedule will be introduced allowing Sunshine Coasters to fly from their local airport, arrive in Sydney to do a full day’s work and return again that evening.

Let’s address council gender imbalance NOOSA councillor Sandy Bolton’s announcement that she will run in the 2016 elections as a mayoral candidates has sparked calls for more women in local government. Sunshine Coast Business Council chair Sandy Zubrinich said women represented over half the Sunshine Coast’s working population and yet less than 20 per cent of local councillors were female, and the Sunshine Coast had only one female mayor in its time. “This is in stark contrast to state level politics, where we see women representing just over half of Queensland’s ministry positions,” Ms Zubrinich said. “This is unprecedented in Australian state politics and a positive change as we look to achieve gender equality across all facets of society.” Over the past four years the Sunshine Cost region has only elected two female councillors, namely Cr Jenny Mackay in Division 5 of the Sunshine Coast Council and Cr Bolton in Noosa Council. Ms Zubrinich said it was not

"For example, on the Gold Coast female councillors make up over 46 per cent of the council including the position of Deputy Mayor,” she said. Logan sits at 38 per cent and Townsville 36 per cent - both of which have a female mayor. Brisbane City Council has female representation of around 37 per cent per cent and Ipswich sits at 27 per cent.

“Why is it then at a time when there is so much focus on gender equality in the private and public sectors - with quotas even applying in some cases - there have been so few women willing to make the move to local government in this region?” Ms Zubrinich said. “It begs the questions why aren’t our talented women prepared to enter local government and are we exhibiting unconscious bias against women when we vote? “Regardless, we need to do something about achieving more

gender balance in Sunshine Coast local councils particularly when research highlights that gender diversity is good business practice and good for business performance.” Ms Zubrinich said possible solutions could include encouraging more women to put themselves forward for local government, and the community could help support experienced women to take up the challenge, as well as encourage sitting local government members to mentor women and encourage them to run for local council. Ms Zubrinich’s comments come as Cr Bolton announces she will run as a mayoral candidate in the 2016 local government elections. Cr Bolton joins NPA secretary and CCIQ Noosa board member Ingrid Jackson and Cooroy RSL marketing and promotions coordinator Elaine Williams, who have announced they will run as a councillor candidate in the elections. “Let’s hope we see more of the inspirational women in our community step up to the challenge,” Ms Zubrinich said.

Random act of Christmas kindness THE Christmas spirit has been alive and well throughout the Noosa Shire this season, with beautiful light displays on show for the community to enjoy and random acts of kindness. The annual Christmas in Cooroy event was a great success, where thousands of locals and visitors turned out to watch the lighting of the tree. The lighting of the Hastings Street tree also drew hundreds of on-lookers. Local resident Danielle Mulherin wrote into Noosa Today with a heartwarming Christmas story about a stranger who kindly bought her daughter a gift. “A lovely man in Australia Post at the Village was watching myself and my three-year-old daughter looking at musical Santa displays,” she said. “My daughter admired these displays. The gentleman, who was anonymous, insisted I buy one of the displays for my daughter. He then put the money into my hand.” Danielle said she refused to take the kind offering, but the man insisted. “I started to cry and said thank you as no stranger has ever given me money. The gentleman was so happy I was able to make my daughter happy by buying her a musical Santa display,” she said. Danielle said she believes in paying it forward and has been humbled by the experience. “In the current world we live in, this is proof there are good people living in this world, especially here in Noosaville. What an amazing experience and we live in an amazing place,” she said.

Noosa tops tourist surge NOOSA'S tourism industry is thriving, with latest figures showing domestic visitor numbers to Noosa have reached their highest level since 2005, against the regional trend. National Visitor Survey results released by Tourism Research Australia show a 12 per cent increase in visitors to the Noosa region, with 739,000 visiting in the year to September 2015, while the Sunshine Coast, including Noosa, experienced a two per cent decline and Queensland overall increased by 7.9 per cent. Tourism Noosa CEO Damien Massingham said this was a clear indication that Noosa’s tourism businesses were leading the way in delivering quality experiences, supported by a vigorous and innovative marketing program delivered by his organisation. “These results are incredibly positive for Noosa and are a direct reflec-

tion of the hard work of our tourism operators who have pushed through challenging times post-GFC with vision and determination to reinvigorate their businesses.” “The destination is now benefitting from that effort with our domestic numbers, and importantly our domestic visitor nights, seeing significant growth.” The national research also revealed that Noosa’s domestic visitor nights increased significantly, up 13 per cent, while the Sunshine Coast as a whole recorded no change. Mr Massingham said his team had delivered a comprehensive campaign into key interstate markets in 2015, with a focus on the winter period, and this was clearly driving results for the Noosa region. “To see such positive growth for Noosa is fantastic because it means

everyone is benefitting and it demonstrates the success of our recent marketing activity. In particular, Tourism Noosa delivered its most significant interstate campaign over winter this year with extensive outdoor brand activity, wrapping buses and a Melbourne tram, catching the eye of commuters at Canberra Airport and engaging with thousands of Melburnians during a weeklong activation at Federation Square,” he said. “A range of opportunities were also snapped up by our members across various print, social and digital media, providing great holiday deals to complement the strong brand focus. “This campaign delivered significant conversion with a 32 per cent increase in visitor numbers from Victoria, up to 97,000, and a 29 per cent increase in visitor nights, reaching 716,000 in total from the state.”

It's all go for big Oz Day party THE annual Australia Day party is back for another year, with a stellar musical line-up announced this month. The event has come together thanks to a generous grant from the Noosa Council and the combined efforts of Rotary Noosa Heads and Tewantin Noosa Lions Club. Jacqui Nichols of the Tewantin Noosa Lions Club said the event was a new approach and look for the annual Australia Day community celebrations. “We are focusing on making it great family fun,” she said.

“The ever popular Lions Food vans will be cooking up a storm on the day too alongside some amazing entertainment. Plenty of shade will be erected this year to cater to and assist with our stunning summer days.” The music concert will be held in the Lions Park, Gympie Terrace, on Tuesday 26 January after the traditional breakfast that starts at 7am, followed by the citizenship ceremony. Live entertainment will kick off from 10am and includes performances from

Hari Bandhu, The Custard Apples, Ryan Giles Band and Mick Lindsay. There will also be cake stalls, community groups, thong throwing competitions and dunny capers, plus plenty of entertainment for the little ones including pony rides, water activities, free balloon animals, and much more. The Australia Day event will be held at the Lions Park, Gympie Terrace, Noosaville on Australia Day 26 January from 7am, bring all the family as there will be something for everyone.

Oblivious to danger DRIVING along David Low Way a couple of weeks ago - a popular road for bike riders, which has its own bike lane much of the way - I was disturbed and even disgusted at the terrible example of sheer carelessness and thoughtlessness I witnessed around the Peregian Beach stretch. I need to mention here that I have no problem with bike riders or sharing the road with them. I am a keen rider myself. But I was horrified to see how many of the large group of supposedly mature adult riders in front of me this day, just detoured around a rather large fallen tree branch on the bike lane, veering over the line, right into the traffic. Not a single one of them thought of the rider, or the driver behind them, by stopping for 30 seconds to push the tree branch aside. I had to pull over and do it, for the sake of any other riders and drivers that I knew would come up behind me that day. I would have been devastated had I heard later that someone had been seriously injured or worse, had I not stopped. So to all those who just rode past and did nothing - shame on you! Keep party politics out I THINK we have one of the best local councils here in Noosa. I’ve lived here for more than 12 years and marched in Brisbane against the State Labor Government’s decision to amalgamate (our) local councils. Yes, it was the State Labor Government, remember. We fought and won though, against all odds and now have our Noosa Council back, and I think we have some of the best elected local people representing us. As I remember none of them stood for any political party. They won on merit, work hard and love it here. Soon we will have to vote for new council members and a mayor. Some might think standing on their soap box like the old days in the Sydney Domain might get them votes or a sympathetic ear, but they would do well to rethink including their political views when it comes to standing for a place in Noosa Council. I, for one, won’t be voting for any amateur politician be it Labor, Liberal or Green who wants to get into council and I’d suggest to those

voters who fought to get our Noosa Council back to consider the implications of anybody who puts party politics before the needs of those who live and visit this beautiful place. Let’s keep party politics out of local government, or do we need the monthly council meetings become just another slanging match like we see on TV in Canberra or Brisbane. There will be some great young people with good ideas putting themselves forward for election next year and good luck to them. They seem to have a love for Noosa and, whilst it might seem the Greens and Labor representatives have some great ideas, love Noosa, lived here for years, raised a family, have children, let’s keep them out. However, it’s too late for them anyway, as they have already waved the red and green flags. Let’s hope there isn’t a blue flag. The newspapers will be publishing details of candidates who put themselves up for election next year. I suggest you read carefully the agenda of each one and vote carefully. Don’t pander to minority THANK you for finally inviting rational input after so long a push for nudity in public.

I repeat my statements in an earlier letter that no beach can be given over to a minority group, least of all to those who would create embarrassment and disgust to beach-goers and National Park visitors. The lure of the tourist dollar does not override the need for nonthreatening access to be kept open to all decent members of the public. However, it is highly debatable that nudists would pump more money into the economy than those who would spend their money on clothes while on holiday! Unfounded angst AS John Lobb (Noosa Today, 17 December) well knows - because he was in attendance - council’s November financial performance report went to the December 14 general committee meeting. All council meetings are open to the community and this item was as much available for public scrutiny at the general committee meeting as it would have been at the earlier portfolio meeting. By continually printing the vexatious Mr Lobb’s fanciful and irresponsible claims about council’s conduct, finances and capital works program, your newspaper continues to incite unfounded community angst. Way forward is to co-operate HEADING into a new year can sometimes have a daunting aspect to it and most can only hope the next 12 months will be better then the last. Noosa and the Sunshine Coast residents have some real thinking to do with the local elections only a few months away. I was delighted, although surprised, to read retiring big wig Bob Abbott came out swinging in full support of the proposed Sunshine Coast Airport expansions. It appears he may be a lone voice, but surely his fellow councillors must agree at least in principal of the importance of upgrading of the airport, which was built in the 1960s. What surprised me that it wasn’t that long ago I attended a call for help meeting at the airport , where officals pleaded for a cash injection to keep the business in the air. Present were airport and tourism officials, Caloundra Tourism boss Mike Wilkinson, myself as Maroochy Tourism chairman and Bob. After discussing and hearing the call for a direct cash injection, to be used mainly in marketing and promotions in the southern states, Mr Wilkinson left saying that most people who came to the area were day trippers and he couldn’t see his board willing to give funding. Big Bob was even more succinct, saying that Noosa was already doing the airport a favour, as the majority of travellers were bound for Hastings Street, "so you have already be

given money from us�. Oh and the meeting wasn’t all bad news, Maroochy directed $25,000 to help the cause. It really is time that the entire Coast starts to work together for the benefit of all. As residents, decisions must be made that will take our region into the next generation and not made just because its suits us as individuals. More people are moving to reside in our area and, while it is a great place to live, it must become a great to work as well. Infrastructure, IT, Education, Rail Link, Bruce Highway, Entertainment/ convention/ Cultural Centre, are just some of the areas that need to be addressed. It is evidently clear the age of residents is rising and we’re not careful, the Coast could become a retirement village. My new year's resolution is simple, all new councillors meet with uni professor Greg Hill to allow them to discuss and see how the uni embraces the entire Coast as one. Slowly but surely, the academic footprint has grown to include Hervey Bay, Fraser Island, Gympie, Noosa, Sunshine Coast, Brisbane and soon to join is Moreton. The total population catchment is around one million, with a predicted 20,000 students within five years. Academia isn’t the only plus, Sport, Arts, Drama, Community Groups, U3A, Innovation Centre all play a role in the uni family. So in wishing everyone a great year ahead, I look forward to a new council leadership under Sandy Bolton, one that is looking to the future and not keeping lawyers in work, taking on every new development. Building on a home-grown talent FOR most teenagers, being forced to help mum and dad around the house rarely turns into a passion, but for the Rigby twins that is just what happened. A passion for construction grew from many days spent helping with renovations around the family home, from painting to carpentry and everything in between.

The Coves, 22 Tristania Drive, Marcus Beach, is the Rigby Builder's first major development.

Tom and James Rigby, 30, now own and operate Rigby Builders based in Noosa and have just completed their first major development, The Coves. Located in Marcus Beach, The Coves are four private, luxury beachside residences that have just been released to the market. For the twins, renovating the family home with their parents unleashed a love for building homes and site managing projects. “We got into this because of mum and dad. They always did renovations while we were growing up,” Tom said. After gaining a university degree in construction management and cutting their teeth with local builders, Tom and James realised they wanted to get out of construction and focus on site management.

The Coves is the twins’ first solo major development and while the experience has been a mixture of emotions, Tom and James said it’s been a great learning experience. “It’s exciting, it’s been full on, but we’ve learnt a lot,” James said.

“We decided to talk mum and dad into doing this development, to giving us a go to manage it,” James said.

“We did a lot of research and being right on the water, we had to use materials to suit the environment. So we spent a lot of time on that, but it’s why

the development has turned out so well. The construction has gone so well.” The beautiful beachside properties are now on the market, but the twins are already busy rebuilding a family home. “We plan to then branch out further, make some contacts, get our name out there and hopefully stick with more architecturally-designed homes as we’ve developed those skills now,” James said.

Layer watermelon, snow peas, cheese, mint and lemon zest on a serving platter. 2. Shake lemon juice and 1/4 cup of the reserved oil in a screw top jar until combined. Leafy chicken super salad Ingredients 2 tablespoons chopped flat-leaf parsley 2 tablespoons chopped mint 1/3 cup lemon juice 1 tablespoon olive oil freshly ground black pepper, to taste 500g skinless chicken tenderloins or thigh fillets

200g quinoa, rinsed, drained olive oil spray 1 bunch broccolini or asparagus, cut into 4cm lengths 250g reduced fat feta, crumbled 4 spring onions, thinly sliced

50g baby rocket leaves 1 pomegranate, seeds removed Method 1. Whisk together parsley, mint, lemon juice and oil; season to taste. Pour half of the dressing over the chicken and allow to

marinate while cooking quinoa. Reserve remaining dressing for salad. 2. Boil quinoa for 12-15 minutes, or until just tender but still firm to the bite. Drain well, and transfer to a large bowl. Set aside to cool. 3. Spray chicken and broccolini or asparagus lightly with oil, barbecue or char-grill over high heat until cooked through and tender. Rest for 5 minutes and slice chicken. 4. Add the sliced chicken, broccolini or asparagus, feta, spring onions, rocket and pomegranate seeds to the quinoa and drizzle with reserved dressing. Toss to combine and arrange in a serving platter.

With the abundance of rich, sweet and tasty festive food flowing from the kitchen during the holiday season, Petbarn is reminding Noosa residents to resist the temptation of slipping the family pet Christmas food scraps as it could prove detrimental to their health and wellbeing. Local Petbarn Noosa store manager Matt Weier, said foods we enjoy around the Christmas table could cause an upset stomach or could potentially be poisonous to a pet. “Most of it is common sense – cheese and chocolate are loved by dogs but are not very good for them,” he said. “Other foods such as avocados, tomatoes, cherries, raisins, onions and garlic are also hazardous and could seriously harm your pet’s wellbeing. “Its important pets are given a balanced diet specific to their breed, size and life stage all year round. “If you are introducing any new food to your pet’s diet it’s important to watch for reactions or stomach upsets.” Greencross Vets chief veterinarian Dr Rachel Chay said animals have very different digestive systems and metabolism rates compared to humans and feeding scraps to your furry friend can prove toxic. “Take caution when choosing what treats to give your pet this Christmas, as leftovers including cooked bones, sausages, crackling and ham offcuts

Fishing paradise open to all By JACK MANGROVE NOOSA has to be the best place on the Sunshine Coast when it comes to an angler’s holiday. From the beaches of the Northshore to the fantastic Noosa River as well as the rock fishing in the Noosa National park not to mention the myriad of reef systems we have offshore, we truly are blessed. If you that haven’t experienced it yet, get yourself over to the Northshore, a quick ferry ride from Tewantin and you are there. There is a lot said about the beauty of Frazer Island but I think the run up the Northshore is equally good. As for the fishing, find a gutter and you will find the fish - whiting, bream and the ever present dart all inhabit those gutters, for the night anglers, jew and big tailor are always on the list. Bait can consist of prawns, pilchards, mullet, or worms. You can also forage for worms and pippies on the low tide. One of the perfect places for that family camping holiday. For those of you new to Noosa, Noosa’s river is by far one of the best river systems on the Sunshine Coast. From the everglades at the top of the river and the many lakes that are a part of the system comes and abundance of prawns and small bait fish - this in turn feeds some of the largest river species on the coast, with thredfin salmon touching a metre, monster flathead, big mangrove jacks, trevally, jew a well as the elusive barramundi, the Noosa River has it all. You can tangle with these fish from a boat or from land. The foreshore along Gympie Terrace is a favourite with families - kids are always delighted to catch whiting, bream and other bread-and-butter species. Worms, prawns and

yabbies have always been the favourite baits. Dads and mums are keep pretty busy keeping hooks baited as kids enjoy fishing the river. The Noosa Offshore scene is also fantastic, and with reefs less the two kilometres offshore it doesn’t take long to get among them. Sunshine Reef would be one of the favourites and can be easily reached from the Noosa River. Sunshine can be an absolute bounty with snapper in the winter and big pelagics in the warmer months, and with its proximity to Noosa, smaller craft can easily make the run outside. Another great reef a short steam away is North Reef. North Reef holds a great many species including pearl perch, snapper, tuna, mackerel and dolphin fish, just to name a few.

For the bigger boats the Barwon Banks is worth the trip with large snapper and pearl perch plentiful. The rocks in the Noosa National Park is fast becoming one of the coast's premium landbased spots, you need to be prepared for some exercise as the prime spots are all a 20 to 30 minute walk. Winter time sees nice snapper and big winter bream, while the summer can bring some quality game fish like tuna, mackerel and marlin. Large baits like mullet and bonito are perfect for these. So it doesn’t matter if it’s off the boat, off the beach or off the rocks, Noosa has it all. The Noosa Nippers 2015/2016 season is on a Christmas break until the first day back on Sunday 10 January 2016.

Be aware of beach challenges on the break By GENEVIEVE FRASER THE New Year brings new challenges to parents and children enjoying the beach over the summer season. Noosa Nippers helps prepare children for challenges on and off the beach and there are a few factors all parents should consider over the holidays. Make use of the patrolled beaches. These are spaces that have been identified as the safest place to swim on that beach and are a much better option for young swimmers than unpatrolled areas. New beach boards and floatation devices are great fun but make sure they are used safely and with the right supervision. It’s also easy to forget about hydrating when you are surrounded by so much water! School water bottles can do double time over the holidays at the beach so get the young ones into the habit of packing them along with sunscreen and hats. THE School Summer Holiday Learn to Swim Intensive Program will be on again soon at the Noosa Aquatic Centre (NAC). The Swim Intensive Program is highly effective for children of all ages because swimming skills are taught and reinforced every day for a week. The program is also a great way to accelerate swimming skill development during the school holiday break for children who attend weekly lessons during term. The classes are held between 8am and 11.30am during January with week three of classes starting Monday 4 January, followed by week four on Monday 11 January, and week five on Monday 18 January. All participants are required to undergo a quick, free swimming assessment before starting the series, (unless they already participate in a NAC Learn to Swim Program) and can play for free for as long as they want afterwards. A Baby Splash Program is also available over the school holidays and during the rest of the year, for children from 3 to 6 months of age. The program helps develop muscles, coordination, strength, buoyancy, problem solving and mobility in water, breath control and confidence, and the program is fun for parents too. WITH a number of beautiful beaches on offer throughout the Noosa shire, many visitors to our gorgeous region find themselves spending their days relaxing on the sandy shores. But the ocean can be dangerous, especially for those who have never visited our sparkling oceans before. To help keep everyone safe this season, life member of Noosa Heads Surf Club and Noosa Today columnist Ron Lane shares his top tips for water safety this summer. With the holiday season now upon us, it is time to check that all important factor - beach safety. The golden rule of course is to always swim between the red and yellow flags because if lifesavers can’t see you, they can’t save you. Conditions on our three local beaches have so far been good, with conditions on Noosa Main Beach ideal for young families. Sunshine Beach, being an open beach, will always have a different environment with gutters and sand banks, and Peregian Beach is somewhat similar, but remember that sea conditions can change overnight. Thanks to perfect summer weather, Noosa is booked to capacity, so families arriving on Main Beach and finding it packed, will often be tempted to walk down to our second beach, Noosa West. We therefore call on our visitors to talk to the lifeguards during the week and the lifesavers on the weekends and public holidays to learn about the sea conditions before walking away from the flags. Don’t hesitate to talk to those on duty be they lifeguards or lifesavers; answering questions is a major part of the job. Remember, if you walk away from the flags you walk away from safety. If when swimming, you get into difficulties don’t hesitate, stay calm and raise one arm. Most important of all, if inexperienced in surfing don’t

try to fight the elements; you won’t win. One of the pleasures of holidaying at Noosa is the family walk through the beautiful national park; beautiful scenery, good walking tracks and those lovely cuddly koalas; and of course unpatrolled beaches - quiet, less-populated and worst of all, out of sight. With Sunshine and Peregian being such long beautiful beaches, they are classic examples of why the family should start their day at the beach by talking to those on duty. From Sunshine you can walk over the hill into the beautiful lonely unpatrolled Devil’s Playground that is Alexandria Bay; better known as A Bay. Often you will find beautiful rolling surf, gutters and sand banks, unpatrolled out of sight and very inviting. We cannot emphasize enough the safest thing on this dangerous beach is a stroll through shin deep water while juniors play safely on the beach. If you do visit A Bay, be aware that at the northern and southern end of the beach there are emergency beacons plainly visible and easy to operate; but only in emergency. For someone on one of these walks who may see swimmers in trouble, there is a procedure to follow. Get a mobile, call 000 then give the following information; location, number of people in trouble, situation, give your location and above all, stay where you are. Grab something that can be seen if waved above your head such as a towel, as this may be necessary to help direct the roving patrol to the scene. Remember to speak calm and slow as repeating a message can waste time. In all situations, this is of the utmost importance. And always remember, the red and yellow army is your holiday’s best friend.

In a 27-page statement accompanied by photos of the snowfall, Brigadier Sole says that Noosa should immediately withdraw from the Paris Accord and demand that government funding for this purpose be re-directed towards abolition of taxes, and possibly to help pay for extensions to Noosa Civic. AUGUST The Australian Sex Party defies the Noosa Council event prohibition and stages the largest gathering of nudists ever seen at A-Bay. Unfortunately the march past is marred somewhat by chilly weather diminishing the visual impact of some of the male members. “We would have preferred to put on a better show,” said ASP president Ron ‘Weeny’ Small, “but you have to work with what you’ve got”.
