On the bus, for free NOOSA Council has this week launched the annual free holiday buses to help locals and visitors skip the hassle of parking this festive season. From Boxing Day 26 December to 3 January travel will be free on all local Noosa Sunbus services, with the exception of routes 620, 622, 630 and 631. There will also be a free temporary shuttle between Noosa Heads and Peregian Beach to help everyone get around the shire this season. Council officially unwrapped the free Christmas holiday bus at Tewantin on Wednesday (16 December) with help from Santa. Noosa Council planning and infrastructure director Martin Drydale said council was delighted to once again deliver the service in co-operation with Sunbus and Tanslink. “The free holiday buses help reduce local traffic congestion and encourage residents and visitors to give public transport a try,” he said. “With more than 43,146 people boarding the free holiday buses last Christmas, and more than 32,434 at Easter, there is no doubt how popular this initiative is.” Travel on a range of regular services, and a temporary service will be free. Regular services include route 626 from Sunrise Beach to Tewantin, route 627 from Sunshine Beach to Tewantin, route 628 from Noosa Junction to Noosa Parklands, route 629 from Noosa Junction to Tewantin, and route 632 from Cooran to Noosa Junction, plus the temporary bus route 064 between Peregian Beach and Noosa Heads. For residents living between Peregian Beach and Noosa, instead of catching Route 620, the temporary service, Route 064 (operated by Sunbus) is for you. The Boreen Point Flexilink ser-

charity donation tin from her property as she welcomed visitors into her Christmas wonderland. Ms Marsden, who has transformed her home into a magical Christmas garden for the past 16 years, collects donations from visitors for local charities in a bid to give back to the community. Last year Ms Marsden raised money for the Hard of Hearing char-
ity and the Family in Need charity the year before. It’s not known how much was in the donation tin at the time it was stolen, but Lee has said she won’t let the theft dampen her spirits and she will continue to open her garden for all to enjoy. “I won’t let this leave a sour taste in my mouth, I really enjoy what I do,” she said.
Ms Marsden, who moved to Noosa three years ago, spends six weeks before December transforming her garden and hopes visitors will experience beautiful moments with family and friends in the magical garden. Ms Marsden first began decorating her home 16 years ago in a bid to regain her Christmas spirit after experiencing multiple family tragedies over the Christmas period.
A modest beginning of just a string of lights and a reindeer have snowballed into a beautiful and magical Christmas light display for the whole family to enjoy and has brought Christmas cheer back into Ms Marsden’s life ever since. Santa on the job SANTA’S elves have been busy this week collecting Santa’s letters from the Noosa Today office. The busy elves picked up Santa’s mailbox, along with many letters from the good boys and girls of Noosa, and have hand-delivered them straight to Santa. Santa said he loved the colourful cards and letters and enjoyed replying to the many wonderful children of Noosa. Santa wanted them to keep an eye out in the mail for a reply, and wishes everyone a very merry Christmas.

But for Noosa local Aceda Rose the Christmas holidays mean collecting and donating toys to the children of recently arrived refugee families in Brisbane. Not your average 12-yearold, Aceda headed a seven-
week charity drive at her school to collect secondhand toys, books and clothes as well as organised a cup cake stall which raised $300. Aceda decided to reach out to families in need this festive season after hearing stories of refugee children fleeing their countries. “They’re just kids, like me, I just wanted to meet with the kids especially and
let them know someone cares and that they are safe now,” she said. Aceda contacted Harmony House in Brisbane, a centre of support for refugees, who said they would love to receive the donations. Harmony House is holding a special gathering at the centre today to await the arrival of the much-anticipated donations.

Visitors seeking sun and sand drive record growth THE Sunshine Coast attracted 2.9 million visitors in the year up until September 2015, with a near-record expenditure of $1.8 billion, according to the latest National Visitor Survey (NVS) released by Tourism Research Australia. A highlight of the result was growth of 11.1 per cent for Noosa during the year, while resorts and attractions across the Sunshine Coast are predicting a record summer season due to good weather forecasts, new airline services and the dip in the Australian dollar. The positive figures continue two years of strong growth with the Sunshine Coast growing visits by 280,000 (10.6 per cent) since 2013. Tourism Noosa CEO Damien Massingham said the strong growth in Noosa’s domestic visits was reflective of Tourism Noosa’s focused marketing activities and strong business confidence. “Tourism Noosa has had a strong focus on capturing our core interstate markets of Sydney and Melbourne this year with increased investment in brand activity, keeping Noosa top of mind with our key target audience, along with partnerships that delivered tactical opportunities to our members,� he said. “Our Melbourne campaign over winter featured consumer activation at Federation Square, high profile Noosa-wrapped tram and digital ad-
vertising in the CBD, creating a desire to visit and resulting in an influx of Victorians choosing Noosa as their preferred holiday destination. “At the same time, the reinvestment in Noosa product and experiences from local business owners has continued, which is helping to drive incredibly positive media in our intra and interstate markets.� This summer season is expected to break all records, on the back of increased air services by Jetstar and Air New Zealand, and the relaunch of direct Qantas services from next Monday. The Qantas flights are predicted to run at near capacity throughout the holiday season. The NVS figures follow the release of record Sunshine Coast Airport statistics. The Bureau of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Economics (BITRE) reported that Sunshine Coast Airport was the fastest growing airport in Australia during the year to September 2015, with 13.8 per cent growth in passengers. That trend continued in November, with Sunshine Coast Airport reporting growth of 10 per cent to 79,905 passengers during the month. Sunshine Coast will also benefit from the first ever arrival of luxury cruise liner Azamara at Mooloolaba on 10 January, and a bumper events schedule starting with the Woodford Festival and continuing throughout

January with the Color Run, Ginger Flower and Food Festival and the Queensland Oztag Junior State Cup. Visit Sunshine Coast CEO Simon Ambrose said the coast had enjoyed an incredibly strong two years of growth, and all the figures suggest 2016 would be another record-breaking year for tourism on the Sunshine Coast. “Our positioning of the destination as a premium resort destination
with a diverse range of attractions such as food, adventure and nature has paid rich dividends for all local areas of the region,� he said. “In fact, the growth in arrivals at Sunshine Coast Airport has directly benefited neighbouring regions such as Fraser Coast, with whom we have successfully marketed the Australia’s Nature Coast campaign. That has resonated not just with international visitors, but also Australians
who have been attracted to the Great Beach Drive. “With our new identity, some dynamic marketing campaigns, and great support from our partners such as Sunshine Coast and Gympie councils, the airlines, Tourism Events Queensland and all our members - we believe that we can attract even greater numbers to the region in 2016, which will provide a major stimulus to the local economy.�
Santa's helpers have been kept on their toes SANTA'S helpers were at it again this year with many locals joining together to help those in need this Christmas. The annual Santa’s Classy Helpers Christmas store was open again this year and was a great success with over 280 families attending the event. The pop-up departmentstyle store is held at The J annually and is a place where families doing it tough can come and do their Christmas shopping. Noosa Classy Lady owner Lorraine Kenway launched the community charity which collects donations throughout the year at morning teas where attendees are asked to bring new items such as cleaning products, hygiene products and toys
for kids. Then, every December, Lorraine and her team of dedicated volunteers set up a pop-up store at the J where families that have been referred can come along and, along with a shopping assistant, pick up everything they need to get through the holiday season for free. For the first time this year, families were also offered fresh fruit and vegetables, a practice which is now part of the event due to its success. There’s no rest for Santa’s Helpers with work already starting again for Christmas 2016. The next event will be held in January 2016 and the theme will be toothpaste and toothbrushes.

All praise for Indians By MEGAN OGLE MEMBER for Noosa Glen Elmes has praised Noosa’s multicultural community in a rare interview with Akashika Mohla from Australian Indian Radio (AIR). Mr Elmes said his experience with people who have migrated to Queensland had been positive with many new Queenslanders showing a passion for success. “You’re just got these people who want to get out and make a start, we get very successful migrants from India,” he said. Mr Elmes said he expected Noosa’s multicultural population to grow in the coming year with many people of Indian and Asian origin expected to take part
in the next Naturalisation Ceremony on Australia Day 2016. Ms Mohla, who is the assistant treasurer for Global Organisation for People of Indian Origin (GOPIO) and who travelled to Noosa to interview Mr Elmes, said she was grateful for his support of the Indian community. “We are very fond of Glen, he has shown the Indian community much support,” she said. Mr Elmes said many people of Indian origin who migrated to Queensland had set up their new lives in a positive way. “In terms of migrations from places like India, you have people who are coming here well-educated with a solid business background, and they are here to make a dollar and they do it well,” he said.

Community spirit to the fore NEIGHBOURS and friends alike showed true community spirit when they gathered together to celebrate Christmas. Residents of Irene Street and surrounding streets joined together for the annual Christmas party for the sixth year in a row to welcome new neighbours and catch up with old friends. Each year, neighbours bring food, drinks, chairs and the kids to enjoy a day of neighbourly fun. This year saw the kids enjoy a jumping castle which was provided by a resident, as well as being treated to a ride in a trailer which was towed by a ride-on mower.

WHERE has the year gone? It is Christmas tomorrow and New Year just around the corner and the Rio Olympics only a marathon away. 2015 has been a great year for sport, notwithstanding the tragic death of Falcons rugby league player James Ackerman in June. It certainly was the year of the women, who again dominated both at home and abroad in a variety of sports. Without doubt hockey star Jodie Kenny was the leader of the pack and was an easy choice as Australian Hockey’s Player of the Year. The tall goal striker continues to hold mag-
ic powers over the ball and clearly has it on a string most games. No doubt she will add another green and gold blazer to her already bulging wardrobe come Games time. Belli Park cyclist Shara Gillow changed camps and joined a Dutch team, with automatic glory, winning the World Cup Time Trial. The London Games star has recharged her batteries following her recent 10 week sojourn at home, and is another set to wave the flag in Rio. Will o the wisp lifesaver Jordan Mercer looks set for a big season following her break through round Nutri Grain victory at Coolum. The paddle-board specialist has welcomed her new clubmate Kristy Higgison and no doubt will push each other to more wins on the national circuit. I personally I would prefer to see Jordan win a national title when the Coast hosts the
Aussies in April. The biggest surprise so far has been Tewantin plumber Larrisa Crummer, who seemed to burst onto the scene with her stand-out efforts at the soccer World Cup. Not so, she has been on the national stage since 14 and has represented her country numerous times growing up. Larissa finished her year playing for the Matildas against China. Who knows where this delightful striker will finish in a career that offers so much. The 15 year old hurdler and sprinter Samantha Johnson delivered the goods in her first appearance for Australia, winning gold and silver at the Oceania Athletics Championships in May. A member of Noosa Little Athletics Club, hopes are high that her efforts are only the start of what could become an Olympic dream.
As usual the Noosa Tri helped draw out the best, with locals Chelsea Gubecka and Annelise Jeffries claiming great results in their perspective events. One young lady who will have a tough Christmas is Emma Sykes, especially knowing she will have to settle on one main discipline after representing Australia in four different sports. Just finishing school, Emma must make a decision on which sport she will concentrate on for the future. What will it be - touch footy, lifesaving, Aus-tag or Sevens rugby? My advice is stick with 7’s, and aim for the 2018 Gold Coast Games, she is good enough and could travel the world. I rest my case and wish everyone a happy Christmas and let's hope the weather is good. Until next time.

AUSTRALIANS are generally thought of as a modern, friendly, egalitarian, tolerant, peaceloving, well-educated, progressive, inventive, sporty, wealthy multicultural nation with an inbuilt sense of a ‘fair go’, a tradition of ‘mateship’, common decency, compassion, generosity and openness to new ideas/people/opinions. Will the children, women and men held indefinitely in our camps, on Nauru, Manus and Christmas Island feel our compassion, decency, ‘fair go’ and generous spirit in this season of goodwill to mankind? Indefinitely is so definitive. Is Australia a mythical place, created by a figment of everyone’s imagination? Margaret Wilkie, Peregian Beach.
GLEN Elmes’ survey is not an honest, independent survey. It reflects his interpretation of views of his Liberal supporters. For example “Fewer than half the respondents, 45 per cent said emergency care was adequate. However, only 25 per cent said it was inadequate” and somehow Glen counts 27 per cent non-responding as included with inadequate. Only 25 per cent considered care inadequate and to suggest otherwise is dishonest. This is a survey that produces the result you aim to obtain. 1667 responses from 20,000! I FEEL Mr McCarty is naive to think council business would be discussed at what was purely a social event and fund-raiser for the Labor Party. Mayor Playford is astute enough to know this and also that any business he needs to discuss with the Premier would be done in private. Did Mayor Playford have a private appointment with her but she cancelled due to time constraints? If so I guess we aren’t that important after all. Wanda Jardine, Noosa.
I AM not sure that 1667 responses constitutes Noosa’s biggest survey, nevertheless, the results should send a strong message to government that residents are not happy having to travel well out of the district for medical care. The government originally built the Noosa Hospital to provide 60 per cent of beds for public patients. This has been eroded over the years down to 35 per cent, while Noosa’s population has steadily increased. It is ironic Glen Elmes is declaring, “We need to have the right services, the appropriate services, right here for local residents.” There is no disputing that point. However, it was under his government, with Campbell Newman at the helm, that $3 million per annum was withdrawn from the Noosa Hospital, allowing the private health corporation, Ramsay Health, to take up the slack. This has forced public patients to have to travel to either Nambour or Kawana, for treatment. Both are very difficult to reach by public transport. We have an excellent facility right here that needs to be properly funded to treat emergency and routine medical procedures. Lack of money should not be a determinant in who gets local medical care. Beg your Pardon? WE MUST all hope Cr Frank Pardon’s derogatory (and incorrect) remarks at Cr Sandy Bolton’s announcement of her mayoral run are not a sign of things to come. Cr Tony Wellington - himself a mayoral candidate and the butt of Cr Pardon’s intemperate outburst - has demonstrated through his record as a councillor and his strenuous advocacy for Noosa that he is a person of substance and vision. More than that though, the residents of the Noosa Shire expect and deserve a respectful and harmonious campaign leading to the March election of a new mayor and council. We must also hope Cr Pardon’s display of acrimony and belligerence in support of Cr Bolton does not indicate their strategists and backers have adopted a ‘good guy - bad guy’ tactic whereby Ms Bolton would campaign in a pleasant and straightforward way and Cr Pardon would be her bovver boy. There is a further possible complication of Cr Pardon’s attempt to belittle Cr Wellington. Given Cr Pardon himself is assumedly running again and may well retain his place, an acrimonious campaign would reach into the heart of the next council leaving it potentially divided and dysfunctional. Noosa residents demand much better than that. It would be in the interests of us all for Cr Pardon to apologise to Cr Wellington and to assure residents that his and Cr Bolton’s campaign will be clean, respectful and focused on issues, not personality. Plea for recognition AMIDST the euphoria of the Paris Agreement, we must recognise China will continue to increase its carbon dioxide emissions at least until 2030. Their annual increase exceeds Australia’s total emissions (including our personal exhalations). Wrong badge I AGREE there’s no place for party politics in
local government, and therefore point out that Celia Leigh pinned a party political badge to the wrong chest (10 December). I have not been a member of a political party for a number of years and present myself as a fiercely independent candidate for Noosa Council. The public record shows I first stood for the seat of Fairfax in 1987 for the Australian Democrats, when my goals included lobbying for the first government funded childcare facility in Noosa. The following year I was elected a Noosa councillor, with no political affiliations, and successfully worked to reduce the maximum height of buildings, increase the size of the National Park and protect the North Shore from massive development proposals. As president of the Noosa Shire Residents and Ratepayers Association since 2009; I am equally critical of all political parties not acting in the interests of Noosa. I am pro-environment, pro-social justice and an advocate for participatory democracy, and I give a guarantee that, if elected, I will solely represent the interests of the Noosa community. Simple maintenance EVERYONE who owns a home knows that if you don’t pay for the low-level maintenance, the long-term cost of fixing things becomes greater. For far too long we have been ignoring the maintenance of our “house” and the scientists who study the house (ecologists) and the people who manage the house (economists) have warned that the costs of dealing with climate disruption in the near future will be far more than the cost of mitigating global warming now. Your “retired civil engineer” (26 November) fails to believe in maintaining the house. It is apparently alarmist to suggest that we do some maintenance. In about 700 words, he made 16 false statements. It is easy to shed doubt on the truth. You just have to say it isn’t so. It takes much longer to show the evidence for the truth and because of the word limit for this paper, the truth tends to suffer. However, each and every false point made by your correspondent has been soundly denounced by science and reported sometime over the past few years in the letters to this paper. It is disappointing that letters such as his are still published when they contribute nothing to the intelligent debate about what we need to do about global warming and climate disruption. Please, NT, raise your standard. Report some of the things coming out of Paris as they might impact Australia and the Sunshine Coast. Keep it smart. Avoid the dross. Steve Hall, Cooroy.
Fishing no more MOST of you will no doubt jump for joy reading this. The end of December is when my commercial fishing licence expires. It is not my intention to renew my licence from 31 December 2015. To just go out the door would be a nice way to go, however it would be remiss to not thank a few people. Firstly, to the editors of both our local papers for printing the majority of my letters. My industry has been on the ropes for a long time, fighting environmentalists, state governments, federal governments, recreational fishing activists and, sadly over the last year, our own Noosa Shire Council. Being a descendant of Noosa’s pioneering Ross family and one of 13 children, to fight has always been my way. The “lay back, she’ll be right” attitude may have been OK back in the

To be asked by the Noosa pioneering Bickle/Richardson families to assist dressing “Ol’ Joe Richy” in fishing/trawl net in his coffin to send him to St Peter, plus being asked by the popular Pateman family to pay a fisherman’s tribute recently to Col (Big Wanga) Pateman were both humbling yet proud and privileged occasions for me. Search for truth I FIRST heard of global warming/climate change by Al Gore with his book ’An Inconvenient Truth’, since then I have read lots of letters and claims by both sides of the argument - unfortunately I still don’t know what the truth is. My problem is I find the letters sent to newspapers are usually very well written, and the facts provided are convincing, but I don’t know if the facts are true - I assume people can prove the truthfulness therefore I accept that it is true. I believe that the truth can be slightly altered to emphasise a point, as Al Gore did with his book. I also think that climate change has happened since the earth was created, (note the ice ages). Undoubtedly man is contributing to climate change, but to what level? Will events forecasted be in decades, centuries or millions of years? Having said that I am now convinced that climate change is either a situation that must be controlled now, or the biggest science scandal ever. Paul Whitmore, Noosaville.
It’s a nightmare I WOULD like to reassure the parents of students at Good Shepherd Lutheran College, who are concerned about the proposed 24-hour petrol station adjacent to the school. As a mail contractor, I use that intersection every work day and the traffic congestion during morning and afternoon speed restriction times is terrible. Any petrol station would turn the area into a nightmare. Council has a history of rejecting applications, but rather than reject the application outright, I would like to see council suggest an alternate location for the developer to consider. Perhaps the land adjacent to the Sunshine Motorway, near the Noosa Civic future development site. That would give Noosa a petrol station on every major approach to the area. This would avoid yet another potential court case, provide visitors with a service which is lacking in the area, and allow the parents at the school to breathe easier. Big interest in high-end properties IT has been a stellar year for the Century 21 Conolly Hay Group team, with a number of record sales topping off an already impressive 2015.

The stunning Little Cove home, ‘Noo Jee’ 5 Allambi Rise, sold by tender at $5.75 million makes it the highest priced sale in Little Cove in recent years. David said a well-tailored marketing campaign helped attract over 50 genuine inquiries from across the globe, with the successful new owner hailing from Melbourne. “The relatively low Australian dollar has attracted the overseas buyers, and in particular Australian expats, who now have approximately 30 per cent more buying power than a few years ago,” he said. The team can also add to their list of achievements the sale of 31 Pelican Street in Peregian Beach in less than 90 days for $3.325 million, making it the highest price for a non-beachfront property in many years. Other high-end sales include a four-
storey duplex located at 18 Douglas Street in Sunshine Beach, which sold post-auction for $2 million, and an off-the-plan sale at the new Sunshine Beach development, White Sands, for $2.5 million. David and co-principal Mike Hay said 2016 was shaping up to be another impressive year with a range of luxury properties and high-end developments already on their books including the Gympie Terrace ‘Kalani’ development, and the ‘White Sands’ and ‘Sails’ developments in Sunshine Beach. Noosa holds strong as demand softens AUSTRALIAN lenders' changes to their investment policies and pricing are starting to have an impact on overall home loan demand, but experts say Noosa is in the clear. According to the October Housing Finance Data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), 55,571 home loans were approved in October - down 0.5 per cent on the previous month. And it wasn’t just the total number of home loans approved that fell, with the data showing the total value of all home loans written fell two per cent over the course of the month. Mortgage Choice chief executive officer John Flavell said even though the data suggested investment lending activity had come “off the boil”, the reality was people would continue to buy as and when they wished. “Investment properties, especially holiday homes in areas like Noosa, will continue to attract potential investors,” he said.

Tell us something most people don’t know about you? I started working at the age of 16 and by time I was 18 I had saved enough money to buy a bright yellow 1977 Triumph Stag sports car. However, after much soul searching I decided to use my savings as a deposit to buy my first property, which eventually turned out to be a great decision.

What has been the most memorable moment of your life to date? I have had lots of memorable moments living in London and travelling the world but my most magical moments, which I am sure will be the same for many people, was to experience the birth of my children. What do you like most about

Where do you think Noosa property prices will go over the next few years? With record low interest rates and high buyer confidence, all the signs indicate the local market will show steady, solid growth over the next 12 months. We have had strong levels of buyer interest, we do not have any vacancies in our permanent rental properties and we are seeing excellent occupancy rates in our holiday properties. All this indicates we will see a strong summer selling period and we are looking forward to a buoyant market in 2016. Where is your favourite part

What attracted you to a career in property? I have always been involved in design, sales and marketing so real estate seemed like a perfect fit for me. I bought my first real estate business 10 years ago and now I can’t imagine doing anything else.

What was your most memorable sale or listing and why? Real estate really is all about people and a sale I remember very fondly is a beautiful waterfront property that was owned by an elderly American lady. She had lost her husband and she had been on the market for a long time with other agents.

If you could witness any event, past, present or future, what would it be? Having attended all the previous Rugby World Cup events with great anticipation, the event I would “tongue in cheek” and optimistically choose would be Wales beating the All Blacks in the Rugby World Cup final.

You are hosting a dinner party and can invite six guests, dead or alive. Who would they be? My dinner party would include Anthony Hopkins the actor who would bring a nice chianti, Jonah Lomu, Gareth Edwards the great Welsh rugby player from the '70s, Ryan Giggs the record holder for the most Premier league appearances for Manchester United, Ali G as one of his alter egos and Diana The Princess of Wales.
10. What has been your most embarrassing moment to date? I don’t get embarrassed very easily but I do seem to be able to embarrass my children on a daily basis.

Feast of new year’s entertainment THERE is always something to do in Mooloolaba. From late night fun with friends to family-friendly events, there are endless choices in one of the Sunshine Coast’s most popular holiday destinations. Mapping out trail upgrade
The Bus That Rocks will roll into Tewantin Noosa RSL on Saturday 26 December from 8pm in the South Bar.
NOOSA Council is investigating the opportunities for partnering with community groups to improve the Noosa Trail Network for locals and visitors. Mayor Noel Playford, Cr Tony Wellington and Council staff joined Landcare’s Phil Moran and Country Noosa’s Dick Barnes to walk the Kin Kin to Grady’s Lane trail recently. “We’re looking at how we can collaborate to improve the popular trails - it might be that we can add some seating for walkers to take a break, plant some shade trees, update the signage and work together to improve degraded habitat and stop further erosion,” Cr Playford said. “There may be opportunities for volunteers to help restore the council-owned land on the
outskirts of Kin Kin to its original state as part of the Kin Kin scrubs.” The Noosa Trail Network includes eight scenic hinterland trails suitable for walking, horse riding or mountain biking. Cr Playford said the Kin Kin part of the trail network was an ideal spot to begin making improvements, with the Dr Pages Road reseal project set to bring more visitors to the town. “It complements Tourism Noosa’s recently-launched Noosa Country Drive initiative, which promotes Noosa’s hinterland to selfdrive tourists as a great place to visit,” he said. “A successful council-community partnership to enhance this section of the trail network could provide a model for improving the remainder of the tracks and trails network.”

Barby to mark Outlook silver RESIDENTS of Noosa Outlook celebrated the 25-year anniversary of the retirement community last month with an afternoon of fun. A total of 135 residents enjoyed a barbecue lunch and many fun activities including a balloon popping competition, hand massages and a fingerprint tree where residents put their print on the tree to be framed and hung in the hall in memory of the day. The afternoon was celebrated with a choir singing happy birthday to Noosa Outlook and dancing where the residents could join in.

Ingredients: 4 medium zucchini, quartered lengthwise. 40g butter, melted. 1 clove garlic, crushed. 1/2 cup finely grated parmesan cheese. 2 tablespoons finely chopped parsley. 1 tablespoon finely chopped thyme leaves. Method: 1. Arrange zucchini in a single layer, skin side down, on a paper lined baking tray. Combine butter and garlic and brush evenly over zucchini. 2. In a separate bowl combine parmesan, parsley, thyme and season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Sprinkle over zucchini. A citation well deserved Between the

EARLY this month Greg Laughlin, Gen Brewer and Murdoch Mayfield of the Noosa Heads Surf Club flew to Parliament House, Canberra, to receive a citation for the National Rescue of the Month for September. Awarded by Australia’s National Council and presented by Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss, the words on the citation said it all. “All involved demonstrated excellent lifesaving skills through their courageous and quick decisive actions.” Other recipients of the award were Kirra Molnar and Don McKill, who were unable to attend the ceremony. This was all the result of the rescue of several people on Noosa Main Beach on 3 September; a citation well-deserved. The IRB training course for divers and crewies started at Sunshine Beach Surf Club has been completed, with all students passing. To maintain the high intake of new members into our clubs, on Monday afternoon at Noosa a new bronze and SRC squad started training. The squad consists of 15 bronze trainees and eight SRCs and has people from both the Noosa and Sunshine Beach Clubs. This is the second time in a month there two clubs have worked together to form and conduct training schools. The season for our competitors is well and truly underway, and for Noosa it certainly started with a bang. The first major carnival on the calendar was the Nutri Grain Ironman/woman series held at Coolum Beach on 28 November. On the Saturday round one of the ladies competition, Kirsty Higginson of Noosa caused an upset by winning with Jordan Mercer of Noosa coming in third. Then, on Sunday, Mercer was again on the dais this time in first place. In the men’s division, new comer to Noosa Jack Moyes made people take notice by finishing the weekend in sixth place overall. Lots to be said for the great work of Noosa coach Darren Mercer. Recently, both Noosa and Sunshine travelled to Tugun to contest the Ocean 38 series with the main emphasis on the U15, U17 and U19 competitors. For Sunshine, Nick Sloman furthered his reputation as a swimmer by winning the U19 surf race and finishing third in the open. In the U15s, Jonty Redwood won the surf race and Maverick Pettigrove won the board race and the Ironman. Representing Noosa, Cooper Williams again continued to show good form by winning
the Ironman surf race and board rescue. He then backed up to paddle a board in the open board team event in which they finished third. For the girls, Reilly Dixon won the Ironwoman in the U15 division. Noosa team manager Bruce Warren said
conditions were very testing, with a difficult surf and shore dump. “Remembering we only had one open competitor, our team of young guns put in a great effort,” he said. “This type of surf is great experience.”

SANTA arrived beachside and hundreds of ducks took to the waters in the Noosa Nippers end-of-year celebrations. The inaugural Duck Race was a great success with one lucky duck ticket holder winning $1000 to spend over the silly season. Everyone enjoyed the barbecue and beach until well into the evening and Santa’s arrival put a smile on faces as well as lollies in lots of tummies. You would not have known how many had done the wall-to-wall swim seeing the energy of the Nippers or their parents and friends. Thanks to all those community members who supported the Duck Race by buying tickets. These funds allow Nippers to operate and help train a new generation of young Australians to be safe on our beaches. This week’s shout out is to our age managers and Noosa Nippers management team. These guys often start so early that many of us don’t realise it because they are like part of the furniture. Thank to each one of you - you know who you are! Merry Christmas to all.

And all those folks out there in the Noosa burbs who’ve had their houses lit up like Gotham since midNovember - you know who I’m talking about, Lake Entrance Boulevard - they’re excited too, or at least they will be when they get their power bills. So what’s the worst Christmas you’ve ever had? I’m going to ask you about the best in a minute, so don’t start getting all bah humbug on me. Think about the worst, while I tell you mine. It was a long time ago, but not so long ago that I was a kid that Santa used to visit. This one fell in the abyss between those halcyon days and the halcyon days to come, when I had a family of my own and Santa started coming again, and drinking the warm beer we left for him, the crazy old red-faced bugger. On this horrible, single Christmas, I woke up in the morning with the worst hangover in history to be told by my girlfriend I had exactly 15 minutes to vacate her house before her exhusband arrived bearing gifts for their young son. Hadn’t seen that one coming. At least she’d brought me a coffee in bed, which I now gulped down while gathering up the pieces of clothing strewn about the room. I drove down the hill to my bachelor flat at the beach and lay on the filthy bedclothes for five minutes while I considered the day ahead. Being horizontal was good, very good, but as some one great once said, you can’t beat a hangover lying down, so I drank a couple of glasses of water, slipped into my boardies, grabbed my board from under the bed and headed down the track to the beach. The northerlies had been into it all night and the surf wasn’t very good, but there were a few people on the left up in the corner, so I walked up the sand and paddled out. Apart from the fact that it was Christmas
there is nothing much that can beat the squeals of delight and the happy little faces that greet the dawn. You only get a few years of that joy, of course, but then along come the grandkids, and it all begins again. Hopefully, we’ll last long enough for the great-grandies! But the best? Maybe last year, because I felt lucky to be alive. But then again, tomor-

and most people had family obligations, it soon became apparent why there were so few surfers in the water. There were bluebottles everywhere. I considered paddling straight back in, but on closer inspection, the waves were quite good, so I shallow-paddled into the takeoff zone, studiously avoiding the long-tailed meanies all around me, and stifling a burp that might get out of control. The first wave was easy. I leaned into it and cruised through several sections with only one thought in mind: don’t fall off. The second was bigger and the take-off was steeper. I lip-launched awkwardly and hit the water legs akimbo. The pain began almost immediately and I looked down in horror to find a large bluebottle actually inside the leg of my boardshorts. I couldn’t see its tail until I pulled the snaps apart and examined my private parts. Ah, there was the tail, wrapped around my poor cojones. I knew this was bad as soon as I hit the sand and tried to run to the surf club for assistance. My groin had blown up and I could barely walk. Somehow I made it to the club and they did the best they could, picking the thing off me and then applying ice packs. Then the patrol captain came in and yelled at them to boil a jug and apply the hottest water I could bear. Nothing helped the pain, but the groin swelling did seem to ease and eventually I felt I could make it up the beach and home to my disgusting flat. I was lying on the bed again when a feeling not unlike seasickness started to overwhelm me. I wanted to throw up but couldn’t. I began to worry about what was happening to my body and, after several attempts, made it to the car and drove myself to hospital, where they diagnosed alcohol poisoning and pumped my stomach. I must have slept for a while, woke up and felt empty, but a little better. “You’re okay, you can go home now,” a nurse told me. “Merry Christmas.” The best Christmas? Well, there have been so many. No matter how late into the night Santa has to work, and how little sleep he gets,

THE Noosa Athletics’ Under 14 Girls 4x100m relay team has broken a 24-year-old record on a wet track at the recent 2015 Queensland Relay Championships in Brisbane. The girls set a new record of 50.60 seconds, smashing the old record of 51.40 seconds. The team - Bethany Jones, Cydelle Brady, Amy Brice and Stephanie Welsh, all aged 13 - showed incredible strength and determination to take first
LATELY the Noosa River has come alive with trevally of all kinds! Big gt’s have been prowling the Woods Bay current line and back of the Sound areas, with the better quality fish falling to surface lures. Jackson Risk Baits and Sugapen surface walkers have been the go to lure, fished with a slow walk-the-dog retrieve. Both these lures are sure to get you hooked up. Whiting have been in abundance around the Dog Beach flats and the Fry Pan area. For the bait fisherman, live worms and nippers have been working a treat with fish up to 40cm not uncommon. Flathead have also been frequenting the same spots with bright coloured soft plastics around the four-inch size working well. Those who have been going out after dark have been rewarded, with mangrove jacks well and truly on the bite. Livies and big strip baits fished in the deeper holes upriver have been doing the damage. Remember to have your drag set at the right level not too tight to pull hooks but
not too loose to lose fish. The Tewantin Ski-Run has been a hive of activity after dark with some big trevally coming through to feed on bait schools. On the beaches, Noosa’s Northshore has been busy with anglers fishing hard over the past week. Good gutters can be a little hard to find but from all reports the best are between Teewah and Double Island. If you’re after a good catch of bread-and-butter species then head up to the Double Island Lagoon - with whiting, flathead and bream all holding up in the calmer water, burley is the key there, with little current fish come right up to where you’re fishing. Offshore, pelagics are starting to gather more momentum now, with some bigger spanish along with tuna and dolphin fish showing up of the coastal waters. Areas like North Reef and the Coffees have been producing some quality fish. Sunshine Reef is always a favourite with anglers in smaller craft, good coral trout have been a favourite and seem to be plentiful at the moment, fish your baits hard to the bottom with

Giants land in Tigers’ lair THE Greater Western Sydney (GWS) Giants were on Tiger territory last week when they took to the Weyba Road AFL grounds for preseason training. The training session was held on Monday (14 December) complete with ice baths, thanks to Noosa Shire Council who supplied fresh wheelie bins, followed by an open training session at the Maroochydore Multi Sports Complex on Wednesday 16 December and Friday 18 December. The community was invited to head along and watch the players in action as the team test drives the sporting facility. News travelled fast after successful St Kilda and Hawthorn pre-season training sessions saw those clubs rave about the quality of the playing surface and the warm welcome they received from the Sunshine Coast community. The Maroochydore Multi Sports Complex will play host to seven AFL clubs during the 2015/'16 summer season including the Brisbane Lions, Collingwood, GWS Giants, Hawthorn, Melbourne, St Kilda and Western Bulldogs. noosa.starcommunity.com.au
