HEAVILY outnumbered police called from several metropolitan stations could do little to stop the danger and destruction caused by more than 200 hoon drivers who ripped through a hard-hit industrial area in Pakenham. Factory owners in the hoon-frequented Bate Close, Pakenham area said the aftermath of the rowdy and reckless Tuesday 8 December gathering was the worst yet, saying something needed to be done to ward off the road menaces. Cardinia Highway Patrol Sergeant Allen Inderwisch said “upward of 200 vehicles� haunted the industrial estate after 11pm that night, performing dangerous burn-outs which left extensive surface damage to the road along with piles of burnt-out rubber and wire from their burnt-out, destroyed tyres. Cardinia Shire Council swept the extensive mess from the road the morning after, however several factory workers who would not reveal their identity for fear of retribution by the hoons said they were forced to take alternative routes to work to avoid the remains of the illegal night activity. “I couldn’t even drive down the street. I had to use a side street so I didn’t get metal in my tyres,� one Bate Close business owner said. Sgt Inderwisch said nine police officers from Pakenham, Dandenong and Frankston units were called in to bring the 200-plus gathering under control, but were required to take appropriate safety precautions due to the size of the gathering. “The police that attended were vastly outnumbered so we had to take a safe approach,� he said, explaining the area was cordoned-off to make sure “innocent bystanders were not caught up in the middle of it.� Police are currently assessing CCTV surveillance footage which cap-

than Prowd said a group of up to 10 young people are believed to have witnessed the punching attack on the man who sat slumped on a trolley after being hit in the face three times on Friday 4 December. At least one of the youths is believed to have filmed the Bourke Park attack which was later posted onto social media, stirring a viral response by disgusted viewers. It shows a female assailant verbally abusing the 18-year-old man left cov-
ered in blood after the repeated punching attack. She is captured throwing her head back in laughter, saying: “his face is bleeding”. Sen Sgt Prowd encouraged those involved to come forward. “If not, we will get around to speaking with them in due course,” Sen Sgt Prowd said. Police are looking at alcohol as a factor in the assault. The man was hospitalised
with minor injuries to his jaw, face and cuts inside his mouth, according to police. A police spokesperson said both parties were known to each other. It is believe the man reported the incident to police on Tuesday 8 December. The 14-year-old girl was charged soon after. Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Carols go off with a bang ALL was calm and all was bright among the hundreds who turned out for the Pakenham Carols by Candlelight on Saturday night. Local schools kicked off the entertainment at 7pm, before the impressive 30-piece Cardinia Civic Concert Band together with a community choir led the crowd in singing a range of Christmas tunes. Candles lit up Toomuc Reserve as the people of Cardinia gathered with their families to ring in the festive season. A PAIR of 17-year-old girls were slapped over the head and told to “shut up” by an enraged commuter on the Pakenham train line. Police said the girls were sitting in the last carriage of the outbound train talking among themselves when a woman struck them both over the head and hurled abuse at them. The incident occurred at 12.30pm on Monday 7 December. Police said the attacker hit the teens before getting off at Pakenham station. The woman is known to police.

A VERBAL dispute between neighbours got physical, with one man pushed to the ground in Pakenham over the weekend. On Saturday 5 December, a dispute about rubbish dumping broke out between neighbours in Avon River Way, Pakenham. Police said a man took offence to what was said to a woman involved in the dispute and later returned to “throw punches” at the person involved in the initial neighbourhood argument. The assault is believed to have happened between 10.10pm and 10.30pm. Police are yet to speak with the man believed to have instigated the physical attack. Police say it is unclear if the man fell to the ground as a result of a punch, or whether he was pushed.

Neighbours’ bright Christmas By GEORGIA WESTGARTH HE’S known as the ‘Lights Police’ of Lupin Court - and he’s got one hell of an army! Graham Conder has lived in his home in Cranbourne North for 21 years and for the past 20 years he’s been lighting it up with the help of his friendly neighbours. “As soon as someone moves into the court they get a knock on the door from me and I tell them ... I demand that they do Christmas lights,” Graham said, laughing. It’s a festive Lupin Court tradition that has become known far and wide and it’s not stopping any time soon. “We start planning in November and on 1 December we turn them on,” he said. “A few Father’s Days ago my sons bought me a new shed to put my lights in because I was running out of room.” “My biggest plan is to make sure my neighbours get bigger and better and encouraging them to keep splurging on lights and decorations.” But its Graham’s love for his “tight knit” court that keeps him coming back for more each Christmas. “We get a great response from everyone, some people visit twice a week in the lead up to Christmas and we’re always out and about too, happy to have a chat with passers-by,” he said. “Every year on Christmas Eve the court gets together on my lawn and we have fish and chips or a barbecue, we are all friends it’s a great atmosphere.” This year Graham convinced 13 out of the 14 households in Lupin Court to join in on the fun and he couldn’t be happier. “We share the lights between us and sit out and enjoy the show ourselves and talk to the visitors of a night,” he said. “One year my neighbour who had

just moved in said he’d love to participate but couldn’t afford it, so I lent him some of mine and we all share extension leads and help each other out.” With many Lupin Court residents coming and going over the years Graham said he was proud to have conned most of them into the Christmas spirit. “I couldn’t count how many families have moved in an out that I have had to convince,” Graham said.
“But once they move in they love it, some have even said they wish they’d moved in earlier.” Letters of praise from onlookers are another reason the jolly bunch keep the tradition alive. “A couple of my neighbours have received letters from children and adults too thanking them for the lights and the effort, people give us beer and presents too,” Graham said.

IT TOOK just a split second for tragedy to strike. Often that’s all it takes. Teenager Josh Evans was riding his mountain bike along a quad track in Healesville just over a year ago, on 27 November 2014, when he went over a jump too quickly. The 18-year-old from Narre Warren North was thrown over his handle bars and broke his neck. He was left a quadriplegic and bound to a wheelchair. On the eve of beginning his VCE year at Gleneagles Secondary College in Endeavour Hills, Josh’s life changed forever. At the time of the accident Josh said he felt like he was only on the ground for five minutes, but he later learned he’d been there for roughly two hours as emergency services were called in and the teenager was airlifted off the track and rushed to hospital. It was his home for the next six months. “I couldn’t move anything, I had tubes down my throat to help me breath, feeding tubes,” Josh said. “Now I can move my arms but can’t move my wrist or fingers... there’s nothing in my legs.” Since the accident Josh has undergone intensive physiotherapy under the guidance of local physiotherapist Tri Ngo. Josh said he owes a lot to Tri who often visits him at home and has helped the teenager gradually assimilate into his new life. It’s the reason why Josh has thrown his support behind the I Love My Physio campaign, co-ordinated by the Australian Physiotherapy Association (APA), which aims to raise awareness about the role physiotherapists play in improving the lives of Australians. “He’s an inspiration to me,” Josh said of Tri. No one should have to go through what Josh has, and the 18-year-old is open about how tough the last year has been on him, his girlfriend and his family. The financial strain is also telling, with the cost of medical treatment and even little things like catching a taxi to and from school every day. But he credits his loved ones with giving him

Cult of religion CASEY council’s support for special religious education in state schools is really anti-educational (Council Backing Schools Religious Studies, Berwick News, Thursday 3 December). If Casey parents and students need religious indoctrination they always have the option of attending a Christian or faith-based school of their own choice. Religion, however, should not be taught in a state school at any time of the day. Education is about opening up the mind to inquiry and science; religion is about brain washing. Real education leads to independence in life while submission to religion leads to domination by cult figures and fear. MORE than 50 Cranbourne residents from the upmarket Brookland Greens estate attended the Casey council meeting on Tuesday 15 December to protest against two share houses that are set to be built in the estate. Carrying protest posters the angry residents shouted their demands from the gallery and gathered outside the chamber to listen to their ward councillor Geoff Ablett explain the council’s next step. The residents were not notified of the development because shared houses do not need a planning permit or ministerial approval. A journalist from the Seven News team was also present at the Casey council chambers for the protest.

The 21st anniversary was celebrated with a speech from the two longest serving councillors, Wayne Smith and Mick Morland. Cr Smith said the historic occasion was quite controversial adding that he didn’t think it was a good idea at the time. “But in hindsight we’ve found bigger is probably better,” he said. City of Casey CEO Mike Tyler has also served the region as long as Mick and Wayne have and said that when he started there were just 135,000 people living in both shires. “Now we’re the largest municipality in the state,” he said. ANY doubts that policing is a dangerous job? A wildly behaving man was deemed to be too unsafe to bring into the courtroom from the Dandenong police cells on 7 December. Police officers were keen to avoid his attempts to spit on them, especially since he was diagnosed as HIV.
LOCAL MP Luke Donnellan would not get dragged into a slanging match after the state opposition sent out an entertaining photo earlier this month of the serving Roads Minister protesting against toll roads when Jeff Kennett was premier. The photo shows a much younger Narre Warren North MP standing next to a sign which says "Jeff says pay toll here", and wearing a coat which has Kennett's toll police scrawled across the back. The photo was distributed by the opposition after the State Government announced plans on Tuesday for a $5.5 billion Western Distributor Project including a western suburbs toll road. Responding to questions from Star News about the photo, Mr Donnellan did not specifically refer to the image, instead stating the Western Distributor Project would provide a 'network-wide solution'.

Christos Papathanasiou, 32, is believed to have known a 41-year-old woman who suffered serious stab wounds at a Strathavan Drive home about 9.30am. The victim was rushed to hospital with non-life-threatening facial injuries. Casey CIU detectives said that about the same time a man demanded car keys from an occupant at an unrelated residence in nearby Earlsfield Drive and drove off in their car. No one was injured at the Earsfield Drive house. The stolen green 1993 Toyota Corolla sedan, with registration number NOJ 386, has not been located.

Papathanasiou is about 178 centimetres tall with a medium build and short dark hair. He was last seen wearing a dark-coloured T-shirt and shorts. The wanted man is known to frequent Cranbourne, Narre Warren, Berwick and Dandenong.
He has links to Queensland and may possibly be attempting to travel north through New South Wales. Police have advised members of the public not to approach Papathanasiou but to phone triple zero immediately if they see him or the stolen car.

AN INTERAGENCY report assessing safety risks at Lysterfield Lake was released this week, almost two years after a five-year-old boy drowned at the site. Casey Council and Parks Victoria funded the Life Saving Victoria report to identify hazards at the lake and suggest safety measures, which comes after three reported drownings at Lysterfield Lake since 1 July 2000, according to LSV statistics. Representatives met on Tuesday morning to officially launch the Lysterfield Lake Aquatic Risk Assessment report, including Parks Victoria district manager Libby Jude, Casey Police Inspector Paul Breen, and Casey councillor Louise
Berkelmans, who has been very vocal on the issue. Already Parks Victoria has installed high-visibility ‘no swimming’ buoys in the no-swimming zones, and well as increased signage and alterations to previous signage to delineate between the lake’s swimming areas and boating areas. Casey mayor Sam Aziz said precautions needed to be put in place to ensure the lake was no longer “marred by tragedy”. “The interagency partnership was formed out of a desire to work together to reduce the chances of another person drowning,” he said. “It’s been vital we work together and seeing the success of what has been achieved so far from this part-
nership has been really encouraging. “Safety around water is not just the responsibility of the park manager or the council. “It’s up to all of us to ensure we are all aware of the inherent dangers around our magnificent lakes and swimming pools and to ensure that we all take the right precautions to ensure an enjoyable day by the water isn’t marred by tragedy”. A five-year-old Rowville boy drowned at Lysterfield Lake on 2 February, 2014, despite paramedics' best efforts to resuscitate the child for up to an hour. He was reported missing to police and was located in the lake soon after by his father. It was the second drowning at the
lake in just over a year. In January 2013, a Cranbourne West man drowned at the site while trying to rescue two children who had been using a dinghy. The children made it back to shore unharmed. Inspector Paul Breen said Victoria Police had increased patrols at Lysterfield Park since the tragedies and indicated these would continue. “Now we urge the public to do their part and make responsible decisions so everyone can enjoy the lake at Lysterfield Park without incident this summer,” he said. Anti-gang youth programs set By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS YOUTH Justice workers are set to hit Apex Gang’s juvenile armed robbers and car thieves with behaviour change programs, a children’s court has heard. Several Melbourne-based gang members have been recently arrested, with 13 offenders locked in juvenile detention, the court heard on 14 December. During the hearing, a 16-year-old “near the top” of the gang’s youth members was sentenced for a string of serious crimes involving taking a firearm to school, disqualified driving and car theft. The boy – who had spent a
month in juvenile remand – was sentenced to a “long” 12-month youth attendance order and disqualified from driving for 18 months. The boy was described as a “very serious offender” who was supported by a good family but didn’t seem to be responding to Youth Justice interventions. “It’s really frustrating, I know,” the magistrate told a Youth Justice worker. “If there’s going to be repercussions and this goes bottomup, we just don’t want anyone getting hurt.” “I hope he stays out of trouble, for everyone is concerned.” The magistrate asked the worker what “anti-gang” pro-

grams were being introduced by Youth Justice. The gangs had added a “complex layer” to the department’s work, the worker said. The magistrate then asked the boy what he was going to do if his mates came around to suck him into trouble. “I’ll just stay with my family and my missus,” the boy replied. “Enough is enough,” the magistrate warned.

TIMBERTOP estate residents recently donated gifts for underprivileged children as part of the ’Share your Christmas’ initiative. Organised by the Timbertop Residents Group, the appeal received a generous response from locals, with piles of presents accumulating under the tree, which have now been donated to The 4Cs Crisis Relief Centre and Windermere Child and Family Services. Gifts of all shapes and sizes were generously provided by residents, including an Xbox game console. The 4Cs Crisis Relief Centre and Windermere Child and Family Services are both Pakenham-based organisations working locally to improve the physical, financial and emotional wellbeing of disadvantaged children and families. For over 150 years Windermere has been helping people live life to their full potential. They provide counselling, housing support, disability services, childcare and more. The 4Cs assists over 200 families per day, providing services such as emergency finance, food relief, accommodation, clothing, counselling and education. Both organisations were grateful for Timbertop’s contribution. Maree De George of Windermere thanked the residents for “a wonderful contribution, which will bring some Christmas joy to children and families in our community that would otherwise miss out“. This is the first year of the ’Share your Christmas’ initiative - the beginning of an ongoing partnership between Timbertop, Windermere and The 4Cs. Grow is a publication showcasing business endeavour and celebrating success as the region continues to boom. Mayors and councillors from Casey and Cardinia attended along with representatives from Star News Group, council staff and businesses featured in the edition. Speaking at the launch, which was held on Friday 11 December at Berwick’s Ambrosia cafe-bar-foodstore, Casey Mayor Sam Aziz said that Grow will be an asset to local business. “We believe that Grow has the power to create a stronger business community; consisting of businesses who feel, and are, truly connected to the wider community and are willing to support their neighbours,” he said. “It’s also an opportunity to spotlight local innovative and successful businesses to dem-

Kyah’s plan By RUSSELL BENNETT KYAH Cronin-Little knows exactly what he wants out of his cricket, and what he needs to do to get there. One of Pakenham Cricket Club’s rising stars, he was recently named in the final 13man squad of the Under 14 South East Sharks representative side - which also features Mitch Cammarano from Kooweerup, and Clyde’s Josh King. With a top score of 58 not out last year in the Under 14s, Kyah wants to translate that into a half-century at Sharks level. The 13-year-old has a few handy types to learn from at Pakenham, too. “Rob Elston and Dom Paynter have helped me so much with my batting and my set-up,” he said. “I was using too much bottom hand so they’ve helped me get rid of that. They’ve opened my stance up a bit more as well.”

Kyah last year made the West Gippsland Under 14 side in the Russell Allen Shield at VMCU (Victorian Metropolitan Cricket Union) level. He has also learned from a few gun WGCA juniors who’ve also gone on to make Sharks teams. “They’ve been telling me how to get in, and they said it went by your averages,” Kyah said. “So, I came back to the club (Pakenham) and worked on my batting - because that’s what I needed to work on - and I made a 50 after that and I’ve just been batting better since.” Kyah received a huge boost when he got an email saying he’d made the Sharks squad, and he already knows the technical areas of his game he needs to improve on next. “With my driving I lift my head sometimes and edge it; with the hook shot I don’t get my hands up fast enough sometimes; and with my bowling I sometimes bowl too short so I have to pitch it up a bit more,” he said.

Comeback win for Pumas By JARROD POTTER CHA-CHING. That was the sound of Pakenham cashing in on Chelsea’s errors on Sunday. Pakenham said its goodbyes to Toomuc Reserve for 2015 with an impressive 11-run triumph against their main competitor for second spot. The Pumas made a sensational return to form after a lacklustre outing last week against Mulgrave as they rounded the bases with ease. It started early as John Beech and Travis Hough brought the troops back in for RBIs aplenty as errors sank the Dolphins in the field. Even with coach and leadoff hitter Shaun Fahy sidelined with an eye injury, the Pumas’ line-up was too mighty. “It was quite good - the guys came out trying to avenge last week’s loss,” Fahy said. “The guys didn’t miss a beat regardless of who is playing - we made a few minor adjustments in the field and those guys played pretty well. “Didn’t make an error on the day and we just played good, clean, hard baseball - Beech had three hits and scored a few but once again everyone had hits.” Feeling at home in the stinking hot, windy conditions, American import pitcher James Mills was dominant in a seveninnings shut-out. Mills - who hails from Atlanta, Georgia - knows a thing or two about playing through the heat and instead he turned up the temperature on the Dolphins at the plate - forcing the opposition batters to stand miles off the plate just to stand a minute chance. His 90 pitches resulted in nine strike outs and most impressively, only two Dolphins found their way to third base throughout the mercy-rule shortened clash. “James Mills on the hill dominated the other team,” Fahy said. “Runners got to third twice in the game and his efforts make it easier for our guys with the bat.” The victory puts Pakenham four wins ahead of Chelsea and five on top of Research heading into the second half of the season - virtually unassailable margins heading towards the club’s inaugural summer finals campaign. “Ideally we’d like to win Wednesday night and have a five game buffer - sets up the season and we don’t have to work on too many things,” Fahy said. “We won’t try to catch Mulgrave so we just need to work on a few things. “Situational hitting, playing guys into positions and bringing guys up from the twos so we can have more bodies available come finals time that have played in the ones and that

Another mighty performance from James Mills on the mound eviscerated any hope of a Chelsea victory. 148532 could be the difference. It’s an amazing position for any side to be in, let alone a brand-new summer outfit just finding its feet in the VSBL, but Fahy put it down to the Pumas playing simple, team-first baseball. “It’s come together because it’s a group of guys that want to play for each other - not just the club,” Fahy said. “They’re experienced ball players and have all played together - I knew we were always going to be solid, but I never expected us to be going as well as we are. “Fantastic achievement by
everyone involved - committee, club, everyone coming to training every week - it’s a great group.” Pakenham will finish of its 2015 portion of the season on Wednesday night when it faces Chelsea in a mid-week rematch. The seconds lost 6-12 and the thirds were brutalised by Melbourne in a 1-23 flogging. Spotlight shines on Bulls By DAVID NAGEL PAKENHAM may be stealing the glare of the early-season spotlight but a serious challenger is emerging for the West Gippsland Cricket Association Premier Division crown. The Lions are untouched and undefeated, clear favourites after the first half of the season, but it’s the improving form and undoubted quality of Cardinia that is emerging as a genuine threat. The Bulls (6/256) won their fourth game on the trot on Saturday with a clinical run-chase against Merinda Park (152). The star of the show for the Bulls was 21-year-old opener Alex Nooy (110), who made his maiden Premier Division century, while gunrecruit Ben Maroney (75) also put his indelible mark on proceedings. Nooy, a classy left-hander, and Maroney, a free-scoring run-ma-
chine, put the Cobras to the sword with the biggest partnership of the match. The Bulls now sit second after a slow start to the season. “We’re really happy with the way the season is going - we’re building to finish in the top four, and hopefully the top two,” skipper Neil Barfuss said after his own innings of 31 not out. Back-to-back champion Kooweerup (3/122dec and 1/188) has leapt from fifth to third on the ladder after claiming maximum points against Cranbourne Meadows (118 and 190) at Lawson Poole Reserve. The Demons had first-innings points locked away on day one and, with the Rebels on 4/49 overnight, would have expected an early-afternoon finish to day two. But Shameera Weerasinghe (86) and Shannon Marum (51) had other ideas, keeping the Demons in the sun despite the efforts of Jake
Bardwell (4/27). The Demons were set 187 for outright points. The tricky-chase was accomplished with little fuss however, with Chris O’Hara (74 not out), Jess Mathers (49 not out) and Bardwell (46) all in ripping nick. Ladder-leader Pakenham (176 and 4/61) has fallen 15-runs short of outright victory against Tooradin (59 and 192) at Toomuc Reserve. Lions’ skipper Dom Paynter enforced the follow-on at the beginning of day two and in-form speedster Jack Ryan (4/73) struck early. The Seagulls looked set for a repeat of their embarrassing effort from day one before former Lion Bradey Welsh (81) and Tom Hussey (40) settled things down. The Lions were eventually set a target of 76 runs for victory off just six overs but, while every batsman was unselfish, they just fell short of their target. “I thought the attitude of the
team was great throughout the game - concentration levels were up and there was really no lull,” Paynter said after the match. Ryan was the real standout for the Lions finishing with match-figures of 9/98. Upper Beaconsfield (158) also found a far more willing opponent on day two with Emerald (89 and 7/186) denying the Maroons outright points at Upper Beaconsfield. Resuming at 4/124 the Maroons coughed and spluttered their way to 158 with Matt Hutson (55 not out) batting well against the quality bowling of Clint Marsh (3/34) and Trent Rolfs (3/24). Batting a second time, Emerald was well served by Mark Alenson (68 not out), who quelled the fire of Maroons’ skipper Scott Pitcher (3/45).
Revved up for action in year’s final comp By DEAN THOMPSON DROUIN Speedway competitors had their final competition at the venue for 2015 on Sunday, 13 December with two usual suspects picking up wins yet again. A string of other drivers also returned to victory lane - or picked up their first wins - with Mark Miles (Standard Saloons), Dave May (Mini Sprints), Wayne Alberni (Open Sedans), Bridgette Morgan (Ladies Standards) and Jack Yeomans (Junior Standards) winning the finals. The visiting Mini Sprints were competing in a Gold Cup series round with Dave May expected to stand out in a small field, and that he did. May won all three heats even spinning in one while leading, requiring him to come from last to first at a restart. A 16.35 second lap time on a surface affected by the sun was outstanding, considering the record is 15.89 that has lasted about four seasons. May then won the final from Jason Lynn, Andrew Burleigh and Kyle Stathopoulos. In Open Sedans, Nar Nar Goon’s Wayne Alberni picked up a win in his return to victory lane. He was too strong for Eric Miles and Hans Lovski. In Ladies Standards Shannon Lovell won two of the three heats, with Bridgette Morgan taking out the other. While trying to chase
down Morgan in the final, Lovell crashed heavily and out of the race - leaving Morgan a clean path to victory. The Drouin Speedway Club returns to action on 17 January with an Open Sedan feature being the major drawcard.

SECOND time was the charm for up-and-coming netball star Gabrielle Dwyer, who has earned a chance to represent Victoria at next year’s national championships. Dwyer, 16, from Berwick, has been working her way up the ranks in local netball, but had to work her way back into the Netball Victoria Under 17 side after just missing out last year. She was cut at the 25-person squad stage in 2014, but she persevered and gave it another crack this year. Her inclusion in Two Bays regional team as well as a talent identification program gave her an inkling she could go one step better this year. “I got picked in the Netball Victoria Talent Squad - identified as having the potential to play for Victoria - and that was something
where I was like ‘maybe I had a chance’, ‘maybe I could do this’,” Dwyer said. “I made the squad last year but then I made the team this time ... it was great to get into the team, especially being top-age as I wouldn’t have felt I’d have much of a chance at it next year if I was going bottom age again.” She features in the Peninsula Waves Under 19 side with the Victorian Netball League (VNL) and she credits the bigger bodies in the competition for helping her make the Netball Victoria Under 17 side this time around. “Just having another year of VNL under my belt,” Dwyer said. “That was good as it helped me play against bigger girls and get stronger as well which really helped.” She’s been an integral part of Narre Warren’s incredible run of junior premierships as the dead-eye
goaler picked up three-flags in a row at Under 15 and Under 17 level. She hasn’t always been the prime goal-shooter though; she made that all-too-common switch from the defence up to the front court on a coach’s recommendation and hasn’t looked back. Add to it her school netball with Beaconhills College and it makes a hectic schedule for the young goaler, but she wouldn’t dream of cutting any of it back. “I’m definitely busier now than I used to be, but netball’s always been a pretty big part of my life,” Dwyer said. “I hope just to make new friends and enjoy the experience of playing of Victoria as that’s always been my goal - hopefully play a good tournament and we’ll see how we can go.” She wanted to thank her parents and her netball clubs for their support of her sporting journey.

ANOTHER new name on the Australian motoring scene, Holden Cascada is the convertible version of the Holden Astra. Opinions are divided on the material used for convertible roofs. In the last decade or so there was a move away from the traditional fabric top towards a solid retractable roof, the logic being that buyers wanted the perceived advantages of the looks and security of a coupe when the roof is closed. Opel/ Holden followed this trend with the previous Astra Twin Top but has now reverted to the soft top roof that was used in the original Astra Convertible with the new Cascada. Convertible buyers are very fashion conscious and their cars have to look the part. Cascada ticks all the boxes, it’s a neat and attractive car. Like all convertibles it looks at its best - and attracts most looks - with the roof tucked away inside the boot. At a fraction under 4.7 metres Cascada is significantly longer than its competitors which include the convertible variants of Audi A3, BMW 1 Series, Mini Cooper, Renault Megane CC, and VW Golf. As such it can provide a lev-

Rear legroom for taller occupants will probably require doing a deal with those in front. As is the norm with convertibles, boot space is compromised by the need to store the roof within it. Cascada’s 360 litres with the roof in place and 280 litres with it stored away is pretty good. There’s a 17-inch steel space saver spare wheel under the boot floor to save boot space. The roof has three layers and opens automatically in just 17 seconds and at speeds up to 50 km/h. Cascada uses the same 1.6-litre four-cylinder turbopetrol engine as the sporty Astra GTC coupe with a handy 125 kW of power, and torque of 260 Nm torque from 1650 to 4500 revs. The only transmission is
