Sandy sets sights By MEGAN OGLE NOOSA councillor Sandy Bolton will go head-to-head with fellow councillor Tony Wellington as they vie for the top job in the 2016 council elections. Speaking in front of supporters at the Tewantin RSL Park on Tuesday, Cr Bolton confirmed rumours and said she would contest the Noosa Council election as a mayoral candidate.
Cr Bolton’s announcement makes her the third candidate to run for the coveted positon of mayor alongside former councillor Ray Kelly and Cr Wellington. Cr Wellington said he welcomed Cr Bolton’s announcement and said it was good for the community to have a choice of candidates. “Sandy and I first had dealings when I was elected to the Sunshine Coast Council back in 2012 and she was working for the Cooroy RSL.
Since both being elected to Noosa Council two years ago, we have worked amicably together,” he said. “Inevitably there are some differences in our approach, but that is as it should be. My policies will be made clear when campaigning begins after the holiday season. I’m sure no-one wants to think too much about politics right now.“ Fellow councillor Frank Pardon said he supported Cr Bolton’s announcement and said Cr Wellington was no match for the popular Sandy.
“She is the hardest-working councillor, she has a lot of energy and drive and she talks about not just the environmental things, but she talks about economics, job creation, and the social aspects of the shire,” he said. Cr Bolton said Noosa had been blessed with solid leadership for many years and it was crucial the new council got off on the right foot. “Good leadership is earned every day, and I’m excited about putting

the same work ethic I’ve had in place these past few years in a leadership capacity,” she said. “Strengthening Noosa’s economy is achievable. It will require new ideas and innovative approaches. But building a stronger community means bringing people together to ensure that the environmental, economic and cultural concerns and priorities of our residents are reflected in both the discussion and the decisions made by council.”

Williams flags run at council seat COOROY RSL marketing and promotions co-ordinator Elaine Williams has entered the election race, announcing this week she will run as a councillor in the 2016 elections. Ms Williams has been a Noosa resident for over 28 years, recently moving from the hinterland to Noosaville to follow her passion for sailing, and said she looked forward to offering “common sense, balanced and community-focussed representation” for the whole Noosa Shire. Ms Williams said she had a host of experience to offer the community including many years as the local JP in Cooroy, experience with community groups such as the Scouts, and previous experience in owning and operating a small business.
Ms Williams said she was also interested in sustainability, particularly in areas of agriculture, environment, water, small business, community and the Noosa lifestyle. As an independent candidate, Ms Williams said she was not affiliated with, influenced by or constrained to any political party, though she was “open-minded” to what the political parties had to offer “if it will be beneficial to Noosa”. Ms Williams said she was committed to making a worthwhile contribution to the drafting of the new Noosa planning scheme, which is set to start next year, and she would be a valuable asset to the council and the community by providing “much-needed female representation on council”.

Collection may be curbed a bit By MEGAN OGLE NOOSA’S much-loved kerbside collection could undergo a major overhaul with the Noosa Council this week discussing ways to improve the service. In a report presented to the general committee meeting on Monday 14 December, staff recommended reducing the service to every two years due to poor recycling outcomes and the cost of logistics. The report said although there were many positive outcomes for this year’s collection, there was still room to improve the service. A motion was moved by coun-
cillor Joe Jurisevic to further investigate options to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the kerbside clean up. Councillors agreed there was a need to explore better ways to recycle and re-use items of potential value after it was reported that a large volume of electronic waste was compacted and taken to landfill rather than being recycled. This year marked the second year for the kerbside collection after a six-year break and over 7500 properties participated in the clean-up. The review of the kerbside collection is expected to come before the new 2016 Noosa Council.

Bonsai trees back for Christmas By JOLENE OGLE ONE hundred stolen Bonsai trees can now return to their rightful owners, thanks to an anonymous tip-off from the public. Last week local police raided a number of Noosa homes after receiving a call to Crime Stoppers, tipping them off to the whereabouts of the much-loved Bonsai trees that had been stolen from a number of homes. One victim was Hamish Dods of Noosaville who woke on 3 December to find thieves had broken through the rear fence of his home and stolen over 30 Bonsai trees from his property, including a fig tree that was given to him as a wedding present. Hamish’s wife, Annabel, confirmed the fig tree as well as most of the other Bonsai trees had been recovered in the raids. Rae and Neill Devlin of Tewantin had their Bonsai trees stolen over a year ago, and said they wanted to thank the person or people who reported the whereabouts of the missing Bonsai plants to police. “We were unfortunate enough to have had ours stolen several months ago, and due to the Noosa police we were able to recover 75 per cent of our Bonsai plants,” they said in a letter to Noosa Today. “We are so grateful for the return of these as we are of the older generation and had put heart and soul in to feeding, pruning and loving them. Once again many thanks to all concerned.” Noosa Today posted the news of the found Bonsai trees to Facebook,

Gala stay-away not so black day By JOLENE OGLE NOOSA councillor Frank Wilkie has rejected claims that councillors were disrespectful by not attending the recent ALP Black and White Gala dinner at the Noosa Waterfront Restaurant. The annual event, held on 28 November, is a party fundraiser and was also used as an opportunity for ALP member Mark Denham to announce his candidacy in the 2016 local elections. Following reports on the event, letters were received by Noosa Today with some community members outraged that more councillors didn’t attend the event. On 3 December Isobell McConnell of Tewantin said it was “disappointing (Cr) Frank Pardon was the only Noosa councillor present� at the event. “The mayor, Noel Playford, and senior staff missed a golden opportunity to raise important local issues with the premier,� she said. Mr McConnell said local government had a responsibility to attend and put forward major concerns for the local region such as Beckmans Road and the Tewantin TAFE facility. “The premier works for all

Cr Wilkie said the letters suggest a “misunderstanding of the nature of the premier’s recent visit�. “This was not a typical appointment where high-ranking dignitaries freely meet with local government staff and representatives,� he said. “These are well-attended and productive forums where relevant issues are discussed in a focused way.� Cr Wilkie said a lack of attendance by councillors to the $150-per-head dinner was not due to disrespect, but “an appreciation the event was a party political function�. “There was a similar level of attendance at former (Prime Minister) Tony Abbot’s lunch for similar reasons,� he said. “Cash for access opportunities, common at state and federal level, and certainly in the US, are, fortunately, not yet the only way talks with decision-makers in other tiers of government can occur. “Productive, low-cost communication between local, state and federal representatives about Noosa issues take place on an almost weekly basis.�

Seeking refuge in a crisis By MEGAN OGLE AUSTRALIAN of the Year Rosie Batty has backed calls for more crisis centres to help women and children fleeing domestic violence situations. Speaking at the recent University of the Sunshine Coast’s Make It Stop symposium, Ms Batty said it is incredibly important to have crisis services available to those in need. “When you do decide to leave a relationship that is when you are the most vulnerable. It is incredibly im-
portant that crisis services are available and able not just for women to hide in, but to begin the therapeutic journey towards rebuilding their lives in a safe way,� she said. “It’s not a choice for everybody and there shouldn’t be that expectation that a victim should have to change their identity but we do need to have choices.� Noosa Council candidate Ingrid Jackson said Noosa Shire was in desperate need of a crisis centre for victims of domestic violence. When announcing her
policies Ms Jackson said it was important to make Noosa a more supportive place for families by assisting community groups that support families as well as establish a crisis shelter in Noosa. Ms Jackson said there is currently a gap in services for domestic violence victims with a lack of crisis accommodation available. Duck dash is a sure winner MORE than 150 rubber ducks made the dash for the shoreline at Noosa Main Beach on Friday 11 December in a bid to win their owner $1000. The inaugural Noosa Heads Nippers Duck Race is the major fund-raiser for the club and saw great community support with over $5000 raised for the Nippers program. Event organiser Damien Smith said there were definite plans to hold the fund-raiser again next year. “There were a lot of people (at the event) who were from outside the Nippers, so that was great to see,” he said. DETAILS about the new food and wine festival have been unveiled, with event organisers promising a festival that will be “anticipated, savoured and enjoyed”. No nudes is good news By JOLENE OGLE A FORMER policeman has slammed the push for Alexandria Bay to be an official nudist beach, calling on a public vote for residents to decide whether or not they want a nudist beach in Noosa. Kevin Healy, 78, of Peregian Beach said turning A Bay into an official nudist beach would “backfire” and he disputed recent claims the tourism economy would benefit from the move. Mr Healy said he was concerned an official nudist beach may attract the “wrong type” of people and said he understood clothed beaches also attract “all sorts” of people, but having a specific nudist beach would only encourage offences. “They say Queensland is the only state not to have a nudist beach. Well, good on Queensland. Let’s keep it that way,” he said. Mr Healy said it wasn’t right for a minority group of residents to want 1.2km of Noosa beach to themselves. “I don’t understand what they get out of what they’re doing,” he said. “But they’re not a majority. If it’s (A Bay) a nude beach, if anyone else wants to go down there, they go at their own peril.” Last week Noosa Today reported the Australian Sex Party (ASP) had stepped-up their push to have legislation changed to allow councils to designate official clothing-optional beaches. The ASP sent a submission to all Queensland MPs, local council, chamber of commerce and members of the QLD Tourism Industry Council stating the legalisation of A Bay as a nudist beach could bring as much as $50 million to the local economy. Last call for donations IT'S not too late to spread a little Christmas cheer with the Noosa Civic Shopping Centre and Anglicare Southern Queensland still in need of donations for their Christmas appeal. Last year the two groups came together to help over 200 local families, thanks to the kind support of shoppers at Noosa Civic. Donations of non-perishable food, toiletries, household goods and children’s toys, games and clothing are all welcome to be placed under the centre’s Christmas tree opposite Ella Bache at the food court end of the centre. The goodies will be distributed to families and individuals throughout Noosa and the Sunshine Coast by Anglicare from 21 December. Anglicare executive director Karen Crouch thanked Noosa and the surrounding communities for their generosity. “These donations mean a lot to families, children and individuals who are struggling to make ends meet,” she said. “We also want to thank the Noosa Civic Shopping Centre for their support. “People giving to the Christmas appeal can be assured their donations will go directly to local people in need. These donations will help brighten the lives of those in the community who are experiencing life challenges such as unemployment, homelessness or even domestic and family violence.” Noosa Civic centre manager Brian Turner said the centre would continue to support local charities throughout the 2015 festive season, including the appeal and charity gift wrapping service. Different local charity groups will man the gift wrapping service, where you can get your presents wrapped for just a gold coin donation, until Saturday 12 December. Gift wrapping will be available until Christmas Eve and is located in a pop-up booth in the middle of the shopping centre.

CHRISTMAS is nearly here with only one week left before Santa begins his journey from the North Pole to Noosa but this year Santa is being warned to think twice before leaving pets as presents. The warning comes as the Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge Society (SCARS) launched its Dog Foster and Feline Foster Families Program last month. The program, which aims to increase the number of foster homes for surrendered and abandoned cats and dogs on the Sunshine Coast, is a first for SCARS which until now relied on its volunteer base to foster the animals. Sunshine Coast councillor Jenny McKay joined SCARS at the program’s launch and said the number of animals being received by SCARS is a major concern which has resulted in a high demand for foster families. “For SCARS to be in this position now, even before the summer period begins when there is generally an increase of surrendered, dumped and roaming cats and dogs, is a major concern,� Cr McKay said. Councillor McKay warns of the issues which can arise from gifting pets this Christmas and urges people to consider fostering a pet instead. “Giving pets as a surprise Christmas gift can sometimes backfire as people are not aware of what it takes to be a pet owner. “Perhaps giving foster care a go will give people an insight into having a pet whilst receiving support of SCARS to help settle them in,� Cr McKay said. A bad law IN REPLY to Robert Bulford (3 December), but in relation to the Noosa Eumundi road. In March Mike Gibson wrote “The best indicator of poor regulation is when normally lawabiding people consistently break, disregard or disobey any law or rule they see as being unreasonable or inappropriate.� Occasionally when driving the Noosa Eumundi road you do find someone driving at the speed limit – they invariably have the potentially dangerous situation of a heap of cars behind which they are holding up. Some drivers get so annoyed that they engage in potentially dangerous overtaking manoeuvres. If the speed limit was set to the Australian Standard, this would be avoided. I note no one in council or the Department of Transport contradicted me when I said the speed limits were not set according to the Australian Standard. It is impossible to set the limit correctly when it is set at 20km/h intervals. Remember it is enforced at much less that 10km/h too, which is an impossibility – in effect saying you must not drive between 83km/h and 100km/h. I challenge Robert to drive this road and never exceed 83 km/h, I suggest he would go to sleep at 80km/h as he would be driving too slowly for the prevailing conditions, particularly under light traffic. SEVERAL writers to (local media) have made ill-informed statements about local Labor Party activities that require a response. Though I was the MC and one of the main co-ordinators for the Noosa (Gala) dinner (28 November), all money raised at the dinner with the Premier is for the ALP endorsed federal candidate for Wide Bay, Lucy Stanton. Noosa District branch receives no direct funding for state or federal elections from the Labor Party. All additional funding comes from the local dedicated supporters and local ALP members, hence the need for fund-raisers. Monies distributed by the electoral commission for elections to political parties is managed and distributed to campaigns as disclosed by the party. I am funding my own campaign. Dr Brian Stockwell is not an ALP member and as far as I know is also funding his own campaign. The Premier and her senior adviser are following up on all the matters discussed with the Premier and other MPs present on the night. Having Labor people in council does not mean “amalgamation� – that would be like saying any LNP people are all about selling everything off. The amalgamation issue has already

Until this stage our Noosa Council, which we had to fight hard to get back, following it being undemocratically hijacked by a Labor State Government, has been completely independent. Now the Greens closely followed by Labor are standing candidates for our next Noosa Council Election. This trend will encourage more parties to field candidates. With attempts by political parties to enter local politics, the voice of the people will fade further and further into the background. Do we really want this to happen? Local government particularly in Noosa remains the one part of our political life where the community can contribute with complete independence. This will become impossible with the entry of political parties, all with substantial funding. Our independent candidates will eventually find it very hard financially to compete with the party machine. It was widely reported after the riots in London in 2011 that one of the big causes of these riots was the amalgamation of councils. It was pointed out that people had lost their sense of community and belonging. If political parties become involved in our council, the community will suffer as their candidates will have to follow the party line and in the case of Labor this could once again mean amalgamation. Festival of sounds and surf THE 25th anniversary of the Noosa Festival of Surfing will host almost as much entertainment out of the water as it will in the waves. With a host of musical acts linedup to join the 8 Days of Pure Stoke, the festivities of the world’s largest surfing event will continue long after the sun goes down. After its inaugural success this year, the Noosa Festival Surf Unearthed will return in 2016 throwing the stage open to the next generation of surf-inspired musicians. To help celebrate and showcase unearthed talent, the festival is inviting bands to compete in a series of heats at Surf Unearthed venue, Cafe
Le Monde. Sons of the East will be welcomed to the stage for the first time in March, the band drawing the attention of Australia’s surfing community after featuring in a short film by Spencer Frost. The young Sydney-based band, who have just released their latest EP Already Gone, are a perfect fit for the festival - their folk-inspired mellow vibes featuring influences from Of Monsters and Men to Kings of Leon, but also harking back to the G. Wayne Thomas sounds of The Morning of the Earth. Also joining the festival line-up all the way from the UK are Z-Star Delta. With their unique blend of soul, funk,
blues and rock, the celebrated band is going to bring the vibes, returning to Australia in 2016 after an extensive and highly successful tour this year. Also featuring on the line-up are impassioned surfers Old Man Friday, who take influence from the classic surf music genre of Bruce Brown movies, plus Tropical Zombie, who deliver upbeat, light-hearted, gentle rock. FORMER Prime Minister Tony Abbott wasn’t the only person catching the lens of the camera in Noosa earlier this year when he attended a lunch held in honour of Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss at Berardo’s Restaurant on Hastings Street. Two separate groups set out to march on the former Prime Minister demanding their rights, when the two groups unexpectedly joined as one. The Noosa Love Parade Marriage Equality March was beginning their protest at Noosa Woods when protesters from the Land Rights March made their way towards the woods down Hastings Street. The two groups decided to join their voices and made their way to the Noosa Heads Surf Club to show a unity of their causes. Local marriage equality advocate Robin Bristow was attending the Noosa Love Parade Marriage Equality March when the two groups joined as one. “It was an amazing moment where our diverse groups came together as one, acknowledging our common goals of equality and recognition,” Mr Bristow said. The day’s events were caught on camera by local professional photographers and have been collected to form the Rainbow Flag - Rainbow Serpent Exhibition at the Wan’din’in Arts Space in Eumundi. The collection of photographs include intimate candid portraits to busy crowd scenes which give the viewer an inside glimpse to the events of the day. All funds raised will support the work of Headspace, Maroochydore. This one's easier than it looks CHRISTMAS is a time to relax and enjoy spending time with loved ones but everyone knows how difficult it can be for those tasked with catering duties. The Dairy Kitchen Australia has just the thing to help make your menu extra special while ensuring the chef has enough time to relax and enjoy the festivities. This simpler-than-it-looks Salted Florentine Bark and Blue Cheese is an easy way to dress-up your cheese platter and is the perfect match for blue cheese or delicious to nibble on its own. Ingredients: 40g butter 2 tablespoons brown sugar 2 tablespoons honey 40g plain flour 2 tablespoons pinenuts 1/4 cup chopped walnuts 1/4 cup flaked almonds 2 tablespoons pepitas 2 tablespoons raisins, roughly chopped 2 sprigs thyme, leaves
picked 1 teaspoon sea salt flakes, for sprinkling 300g wedge of blue cheese for serving Method Bring butter, sugar and honey to the boil in a small saucepan. Boil for 2 minutes. Stir flour into the butter mixture followed by nuts, pepitas, raisins and thyme. Line a baking tray with paper ensuring it extends up and over both sides on the tray. Dollop scant tablespoonfuls of the mixture onto the tray about 5cm apart. Bake at 180 degrees C for 7-10 minutes or until spread, bubbling and deep golden in colour. Remove and sprinkle with salt. Cool on tray for 10 minutes before transferring to a cooling rack to cool completely. Repeat with the remaining mixture. Note that the mixture will have formed one large thin sheet and will harden upon cooling. Break sheet into shards and serve with a wedge of blue cheese.

legendary surfing character Scott Dillon. When you’re making a documentary about the pioneers of the Australian surfboard industry, Scotty just cannot be left out. But where was he? Scotty got himself into a bit of strife in Hawaii a couple of years ago when he disappeared for a few days, leaving his rental car at an airport. He was declared a missing person and police began combing the island chain for a feisty old bugger in boardies, wearing a lot of bling and a lot of attitude. He’s been an international man of mystery ever since. There were rumours about a stint in a nursing home, from which he’d fled, perhaps to Tasmania. I considered flying to Tasmania but then I got a tip - a nursing home in Coffs Harbour. Yes, Mr Dillon was in residence and would I like to speak to him? “Phil,” he bellowed, “where ya bloody been?” Born in Bondi in 1928, Scotty rode toothpicks from the age of six, and in the immediate post-war years was one of Sydney’s finest and gamest surfers. In the 1950s he turned to surfboard production, but would never be found at the factory when the surf was up, and his many employees loved him for that. Everywhere he went, Scotty was the life of the party, even as he got older. Last week in Coffs Harbour we shared some chuckles about the many Noosa Surf Festivals he’s attended, and the year he and Midget Farrelly were guests of the Biarritz Surf Festival and we showed them around the wineries and tapas bars of the Basque Coast of France. We spent a few memorable hours with Scotty, and he wanted his Noosa friends to know he’s in good care, and in good spirits. And he’ll be back, so save him a wave or two.

AFTER a pretty lacklustre Test series against the Kiwis, the slaughter of the West Indies in Hobart in under three days last week signalled to me that I won’t be spending a lot of daytime hours watching the cricket this holiday season. Bring on the Big Bash, when the sun’s gone down and you can crack a beer and unleash the inner yobbo! There was a time, of course, when no work or social arrangements could be allowed to interfere with the Boxing Day Test, particularly if it was an Ashes series. I might sneak an early surf in, but come mid-morning I’d be anchored to a favourite lounge chair for the day. And the next, and the next, and the next, and the next, because in those days most Test matches lasted the full five days. My friend Stephen Bell (also known as Belly Slater, since he has caddied for the champ his entire career) lives in France but comes home to Melbourne to see his mum every Christmas. I once asked him what he did at mum’s. “We get up late, have a big breakfast and switch the cricket on. When they break for lunch we crack our first VBs and heat up a Four and Twenty meat pie.” I said that sounded like fun, but what did they do the next day? “Exact same thing. We might have a VB before lunch, depending on the score.” Unless the standard of cricket improves by Boxing Day, I think Belly and his mum might be reaching for a VB before breakfast! It’s such a shame to see the once-mighty West Indies reduced to this pack of shuffling easybeats. They were the guys who turned me onto cricket in the first place, that magical summer of 1960/61 when Frank Worrell’s warriors played their hearts out before narrowly going down to Richie Benaud’s men. That was the summer of the tied Test, the heroic draw when our last man in held on for two hours of Wes Hall pace, the drama of Joe Solomon’s cap falling off and dislodging the bails. We didn’t have a television yet, but Mrs Foy, the doctor’s widow up the road did, and I’d get there at four, just in time to catch the last session of play, the only one televised in those far-off days. Mrs Foy would put out a plate of lamingtons and we’d be in heaven for two hours. A generation later, my writing partner Neil Jameson and I won a contract to produce a book about the 1984/85 series against the Windies. Since it was captain Clive Lloyd’s farewell tour, we called the book Supercat’s Last Summer. The slim volume of rushed text and grainy photos didn’t exactly create sales records, but it gave us one hell of an excuse to eat, sleep and breathe cricket with some of the greatest legends of the game. Greg Chappell, Dennis Lillee and Rod Marsh had all retired at the end of the previous season, leaving a gaping hole in Australia’s talent bank, and the Windies, at the height of their greatness and spearheaded by the wily Lloyd, the master blaster Viv Richards and speedsters Michael Holding and Joel Garner, went through us like a dose of salts. I watched nearly every ball bowled in that series, either in the stands or on the TV, and it was great to watch a great team at the height of its powers. I wasn’t born when Bradman’s Invincibles slaughtered England in 1948, and I was too young to fully appreciate what I saw from Mrs Foy’s living room in 1960. The Supercat Summer was my time and I will never forget the majesty of the West Indian team, just as I will never remember a single performance of the current also-rans.

Perfect for fishing By JACK MANGROVE NOOSA'S offshore fishing has always been good, but over the past week it’s been nothing short of perfect, if the wind will abate for a few days this week we should see some outstanding catches. Mackerel have been making an appearance on the close in reefs such as Sunshine Reef and Jew Shoal, these ferocious feeders have been falling for a variety of baits and lures. One particular technique that seems very popular with the mackerel fisherman at the moment is floating out unweighted pilchards on gang hooks with a squid skirt over the top of the bait, this looks a lot like a squid eating a small bait fish and is a gourmet meal to a hungry pelagic. Elsewhere on the reefs, sweetlip and squire have been in good numbers with a lot of smaller undersize fish amongst them, a great
way to keep a bait in the game is tie on a large soft plastic lure and “hop” it across the bottom. By doing this method, you cover a lot of ground and the smaller fish are far less likely to attack a large lure. On the outer reefs things have also been outstanding with the Hards, Barwon Banks, and Double Island all producing some great catches. Snapper, pearlies, Tuskies, coral trout and spangled emperor have all hit the decks. In the river, trevally are on the chew in a big way, large schools of trevally are feeding around the deeper sections of Noosa Sound and Woods Bays, Jewies, trevally and large bream have been taken from the rocks at the river mouth. The majority of these fish can be chased using small soft plastics worked slowly across the bottom. Another species that has been making its presence known over the past week is the mangrove jack. These predatory red fish tend
Craig Mullet caught this 15kg Mackerel. to feed more at night, live bait has been one of the most successful ways to target them but a trolled hard bodied lure or a prawn-profiled soft plastic can often does the trick. The Noosa River must be one of the best whiting fisheries
on the coast, with the sandbanks around the Frying Pan a mecca for anglers, live worms, freshly pumped yabbies, and pealed prawns are all perfect baits for a great feed of these fantastic table fish. On the beaches; Noosa’s North Shore is crawling with four wheel drives as families make their way to the camping grounds with a break and a little fishing in mind. This is a great time to get the kids to work collecting bait on the low tide, worms and pippies are plentiful on the beaches and with a little effort you will soon have enough bait to keep the crew happy. Look for those deeper gutters with the best being north of Teewah. There are plenty of dart bream and whiting and this will keep the kids entertained for hours. Big names come out for Masters ALL playing places for the Sunshine Coast Masters to be held next week at Noosa Golf Club on Tuesday, Peregian Springs Golf Club on Wednesday and at Twin Waters Golf Club on Thursday and Friday, were sold out within days of opening. Golf amateurs and professionals from all over Australia are playing in the event, including European and Fijian golf professionals. Vijay Singh’s brother Krishna is playing, along with reigning Australian Masters Champion Peter Senior, Mike Harwood, winner of the recent Fijian Legends Tour event, and 1991 British Open Champion, Ian Baker Finch. These are just some of the golf stars that will be in action over the four days of the tournament. School’s in for golfers THE Q School teed off at Noosa Springs on Wednesday as 52 gun golfers from Australasia battle it out for their shot at a career in tournament golf. It’s the First Stage of a cutthroat qualifying process that will enable players finishing high enough the opportunity to earn a card for the PGA Tour of Australasia’s 2016 season. If you want to catch the action, the tournament runs from Wednesday 16 December to Friday 18 December at Noosa Springs. It’s a two-tee start between 6.30-8.30am daily off both the 1st and 10th tees, finishing at 1pm daily.

efforts would be rewarded by a crowd of hopefully 4000 attending to show their respect. It is now part of our local folklore that some 15,000 were in attendance. This goes to show the role that modern day surf clubs can play within our local communities. Gone are the days when the clubbies concerned themselves with the beach between the flags and nothing else. Well done to both groups. For Sunshine Beach it has indeed been a year to remember. Nick Sloman became the first member ever to win a gold medal in an open surf race at an Australian Titles. In a blue ribbon, but unheralded event, the club also won the branch, state and national gold medals in the Patrol Competition in the Uunder 17 division; first time this has ever been achieved by any club in Australia. In the vital area of leadership Sunshine Beach Club Captain Scott Summers won the coveted Clive Hammond Silver Medal for Excellence in Life Saving and to cap it off was named the Sunshine Coast Life Saver of the year.

Remarking on the achievements Club President Craig Law said, “These awards are something for not only our club but also our community can take pride in. However to me one of our best is the fact that we now have177 active members the highest membership in the clubs history.” Under the control of Noosas Education Manager Greg McLaughlin, the School Education Program for Surf Awareness, now being conducted from the Noosa Club should be noted as one of the most successful and important projects ever undertaken by lifesaving in the State of Queensland. To take our message of lifesaving and our way of life to thousands of school children is indeed a massive step forward in securing the future of our organisation. The Noosa Seahorse Nippers continues to become yet another major success story. Once people came to understand the concept people from other clubs and organizations including our own shire council have stepped forward to help. This must be very encouraging to Steve Mawby and wife Nicole, the people responsible for what must be one of the most humane projects ever to be attempted in the community of Noosa. Definitely one of our great ongoing achievements. Well done and many thanks to anyone involved. Merry Christmas to all.

A GOOD thing about Christmas in our surf clubs is that it gives us the opportunity to look back over the achievements and progress of our three clubs, Noosa, Sunshine and Peregian. Happy to relate its good news right across the board. Perhaps the bright shining star in our district has been the successful amalgamation of our two clubs Peregian and Noosa. When Peregian was experiencing some difficulties Noosa put up its hand to help and all is once again going strong. Well done to all members from both clubs who stood up to be counted. Lifesaving team work at its best. Regarding high individual awards, Ian Young O.A.M, and Lenore Grice, induction into the Australian Hall of Fame, will definitely go down in Noosa’s club history. Warrick Redwood, Australian Volunteer of the Year and wife Jo, state Rookie Coach of the Year, made Sunshine proud. Back in April before our season started the joint venture between Tewantin Noosa RSL and Citizens Memorial Club Inc. and the Noosa Heads Surf Life Savers to organise the Centenary Reenactment of the landing at Gallipoli on Noosa's Main Beach, was in fact a massive public relations success. The only mistake was when some local Hastings Street businessmen, in agreeance with some Noosa clubbies, estimated that their
