Emergency response By MEGAN OGLE THERE was smoke on the water on Tuesday when emergency services joined forces in a major multi-agency training exercise on the Noosa River. Operation Sandfly 2015 utilised the skills of Queensland Fire and Emergency Services, Queensland Police Service, Queensland Ambulance Service, Maritime Safety Queensland, Surf Life Saving Queensland, Australian Volunteer Coast Guard and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service. The emergency services responded to a simulated house boat fire and carried out a search and rescue mission just in time for the upcoming busy summer season of boating.
Acting Chief Superintendent for Queensland Fire and Emergency Services Adam Gwen said it was important that holiday makers and locals take precautions when out on the water over the festive season. “People need to make sure they check their fuel lines, make sure their vessels don’t have any leaks and if they are cooking on their vessel make sure they shut off their cooking supply once they have finished,� he said. Mr Gwen said the training exercise was integral to the agency. “It’s important that we maintain a lot of training capabilities which ensures that we have a seamless service delivery,� he said.
The Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service attended the mock search and rescue mission on Tuesday.

FORMER Noosa councillor Ray Kelly has announced he will run for mayor in the 2016 council elections. Mr Kelly is currently the second candidate to announce his mayoral ambitions in the coming elections. He will go head to head with the other mayoral candidate, Tony Wellington. Mr Kelly, who served on the Noosa Council for 23 years until the amalgamation with Sunshine Coast Council, said his hiatus from local government had meant he could return with a new-found energy and a commitment to work hard. Mr Kelly said he was
passionate about supporting innovative industries to become established in the Noosa region as well as focusing on the need for sufficient infrastructure and high speed internet. Planning schemes which reflect the needs of the community, protection of the environment and the community lifestyle are on the top of Mr Kelly’s agenda along with a focus on re-establishing a junior council. Mr Kelly said he was against party politics in local government. “Local government is for the people of our community not the party play makers,� he said.

Cheer campaign goes into overdrive By JOLENE OGLE THE Noosa Today annual Christmas Cheer Campaign has wrapped up for another year, with all kind donations going to the Basket Brigade to help make Christmas extra-special for over 100 local families. The Basket Brigade spends the year collecting gifts for families, long-life foods and Christmas treats to help make the festive season a little brighter for those doing it tough. This year has seen some exceptional fund-raising efforts from locals including two Cooroy State School students who collected over 540 books for the Basket Brigade to dispense to children throughout the shire. Elizabeth Delley and Lauren Hewitt, who are both school captains at Cooroy State School, first learnt about the Noosa Library Give-A-Book campaign through an article in Noosa Today and decided they wanted to help. With the support of their teachers and fellow students, the girls placed donation boxes in 21 classrooms, collecting hundreds of books including over 80 books from one classroom of 25 children. One boy donated all the books he received for his birthday. The books have been donated to the Basket Brigade, which will this Saturday pack over 100 hampers to give to local families in need. Elizabeth’s mum, Joanne, said

Local businesses also lent a
helping hand such as the team from OPSM Noosa Civic. Team member Verinia read about the collection drive in Noosa Today and, after approaching her boss and co-workers, everyone decided to collect two items of food per week, which resulted in a trolley-full of food for the Basket Brigade hampers. Many donations were also received through the Noosa Today office, with one mysterious local dropping off 10 bags of shopping
on Monday morning, which is sure to really make Christmas special for the 325 beneficiaries of the Basket Brigade hampers this year. Jackson to stand for council seat
Survey sets community standards By JOLENE OGLE THE results are in for Noosa’s biggest community survey and while there were some surprising results, it’s not all good news for the shire. Noosa MP Glen Elmes, the survey was sent to more than 20,000 homes throughout the electorate with 1667 responses received by the MP’s office. The list of questions covered key issues such as health and lifestyle, crime and safety and development, with a range of topics from local, state and federal jurisdictions. Mr Elmes said the survey results give him a great indication about what is important to the electorate and will also help inform his decisions when he comes to vote on legislation in Parliament. According to the survey results, Noosa residents are concerned about a range of local issues including planning, development, crime and healthcare. Fewer than half of the respondents (45 per cent) said emergency care was adequate, while 25 per cent said it was inadequate and 27 per cent of people didn’t respond. Mr Elmes said Noosa Hospital services were at the forefront of his mind, having already spoken to Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk about im-
proving the services on offer. “The procedures on offer (at Noosa Hospital) need to evolve to suit the aging population,” he said. “It won’t be possible for everyone to go to the Kawana hospital, so we need to have the right services, the appropriate services, here for local residents.” When it comes to community demand for a birthing suite at Noosa Hospital, Mr Elmes said it was “next to impossible”. “A birthing suite was never envisaged for Noosa Hospital,” he said. “The chances of getting one are next to impossible.” When it comes to development, there were interesting results with 69 per cent of respondents supporting the Sunshine Coast Airport expansion, while 70 per cent of respondents said no to higher density living in Noosa. Eighty-eight per cent of respondents said they do not support lifting restrictions on high-rise development and 69 per cent of respondents support an increase in light industrial development, while 28 per cent of respondents supported the Noosa Civic planned expansion, compared to 30 per cent who didn’t. Mr Elmes said it was interesting to see that only 12 per
cent of respondents said they were affected by the closure of the Tewantin TAFE facility, but 68 per cent of respondents said they support the re-structure of the campus into a local jobs training facility, while 53 per cent said there was a need for apprenticeships in Noosa. When it comes to crime and safety, 77 per cent of respondents said they support the current legislation on criminal motorbike gangs, while 84 per cent of respondents said they don’t think current sentencing reflects community standards. A staggering 95 per cent of respondents said there needs to be tougher measures to deal with domestic violence, a message Mr Elmes said was being heard loud and clear throughout all levels of government. For the environment, 79 per cent of respondents said they support greater local control of the administration of Noosa River, while 70 per cent said they support lowimpact eco-tourism activities, such as trekking and overnight camping, in National Parks. Other results included 79 per cent of respondents who said they support voluntary euthanasia and 68 per cent of respondents who said they are concerned the interest payable on State debt is impacting on the building of essential infrastructure.

Noosa MP Glen Elmes has revealed the results of Noosa’s biggest community survey.
NOOSA Parks Association (NPA) secretary and CCIQ Noosa board member Ingrid Jackson has announced she will run in the 2016 council elections. Ms Jackson said her priority is to ensure the council strikes the right balance between community, commerce and the environment. “The Noosa Parks Association and the Chamber of Commerce understand a sustainable community must be both environmentally and economically viable,” Ms Jackson said. “They also know there is great public benefit for the shire’s leading civic organisations to work in a collaborative way. “I am absolutely supportive of this and determined the council should play an appropriate role.” Ms Jackson said she would step down from the management board of the NPA if she were to be elected to the council next year. The former management consultant also said health care and aged care facilities are on her agenda with a focus on Noosa Hospital. “People say these are issues for the State Government, and so they are, but councils can play an important advoca-

tion to instigate and drive this appeal as it is for a really good cause,” he said. “The association members were amazed at the generosity of the local community and also from other organisations such as charities, local businesses and clubs.” Bruce said Ziggy was now on the register to receive a specially trained Smart Pup, with 12-months of intensive training to get through before the pup can live with Ziggy and his family. In the meantime, Smart Pups volunteer carers Jim and Carol Sharpe have been busy introducing Ziggy to a sixmonth-old pup, Bindi, as well as nine-year-old dog Mr Bear who is used in the training. Along with Jim, Carol and Bruce, Bindi and Mr Bear made a special appearance at the Tewantin Noosa RSL last Friday night to help raise funds for Ziggy. Sabine said she never thought the family would ever get a Smart Pup for Ziggy, and if it wasn’t for Bruce, they wouldn’t. “Our whole family cannot thank him and the Vietnam Veterans Association enough,” she said.
Supporters spread the message of no tolerance for domestic violence throughout Noosa on the weekend.
Call to end the violence ZONTA Club of Noosa members took to local streets on Saturday 5 December to raise awareness of the impact of gender violence. The anti-domestic violence group walked the Noosa boardwalk to demand vio-
lence against women be recognised as an abuse of basic human rights. Members carried large orange cut-outs of women with the slogan “unite and end violence against women and girls”, plus handed out information
sheets on gender violence. The event was one of many taking place world-wide in the Say No to Violence Against Women campaign, with the club inviting the community to join with them in creating a safe and equal world.

IN true Noosa spirit, the community has come together to raise $25,000 for a Tewantin family in desperate need of a special assistance dog for their son. In September, Noosa Today reported the Laidlaw family needed help to raise the funds to have a Smart Pup for their 12-year-old son Ziggy, who is non-verbal autistic. Ziggy’s mum Sabine said at the time that it was impossible to take Ziggy out. “We are unable to take him out because he runs away and has no sense of danger,” she said. “Ziggy has now realised he can climb over fences and in the past two weeks has been found in the middle of Beckmans Road watching the cars fly past him.” Sabine said a Smart Pup, which is specially trained to assist children like Ziggy, would mean the family could go out for days in the park, to restaurants and to the shops. The local Tewantin Noosa Vietnam Veterans club heard about Ziggy’s needs and began a fund-raising drive to assist the Laidlaw family. Club member Bruce Wilson was the driving force

Cheers across the miles MORE than 1600 shoe boxes full of educational goodies have made it through a six-month journey, storms and a school-term break to safely arrive in Timor Leste. The educational care parcels were sent from Tewantin, Cooroy and Pacific Paradise state schools in June and have now arrived at the Sao Miguel school at Raikotu, about 30 minutes west of Dili. The school has 150 kindergarten students, 250 primary school students and some 200 junior high school students, but the surrounding area of need stretches to include hundreds more. With the help of the Community Bank branches of Bendigo Bank in Tewantin, Cooroy and Marcoola and the Rotary Clubs of Noosa and Cooroy, local students were able to send the parcels to the school. Each parcel took the form of a decorated shoe box with enclosed items including exercise books, rulers, erasers, pens and pencils, all topped off with a personal item from each student from Cooroy and Tewantin State Schools to the child opening it at the other end. Tewantin State School principal Corrie Connors said learning of the arrival of the shoe boxes had brought an emotional reaction from her students. “The students and our school all have a real connection to this project,” she said. “They had a ball putting the care parcels together, and it’s great to see their hard work and the fabulous support of their families, the Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank and Rotary Clubs of Noosa and Cooroy have finally made their way into the hands of the kids who need them most.”

Nude beach A MAN charged with wilful exposure at ABay in January has had his appeal rejected after taking his fight to the Brisbane courts. David Charles Winston was charged in January but believed the Maroochydore magistrate got it wrong, deciding to appeal the magistrate’s decision in the Brisbane District Court. Winston argued there was an error in the law because no clothed person, other than the arresting officer, saw him naked and that he had a reasonable excuse for being naked.. Respite for the recreation types THE long-awaited Cooroy RV Stop will be open from Friday 11 December just in time for Christmas. The Noosa Council initiative will offer a place for recreation vehicles (RVs) to stop and explore the Noosa region as well as a waste dump point for RVs. Cr Sandy Bolton said the Mary River Road facility will accommodate up to 40 RVs and provide the opportunity to grow the local economy. “This stop will enable Cooroy to achieve ‘RV Friendly Town’ status, and put not just Cooroy, but the whole of country Noosa, with its unique rural villages and attractions, on the RV travellers’ map,” Cr Bolton said.

INTERNATIONAL travellers continue to show their love for Noosa with latest figures showing Noosa’s overseas visitor growth is twice that of the State. International Visitor Survey results released by Tourism Research Australia show a 12.6 per cent increase in visitors to the Noosa region, with 137,431 visiting in the year to September 2015. Overseas visitors to the Sunshine Coast, including Noosa, rose 4.5 per cent and across Queensland the increase was 6.3 per cent, with about 54 per cent of all international visitors to the Sunshine Coast coming to Noosa. Tourism Noosa CEO Damien Massingham said this was Noosa’s fifth consecutive quarter of growth. “This is great news for all tourism operators and other businesses in Noosa, particularly coming into the busiest time of the year for Christmas, as it means the industry is seeing a strong and sustained impact from overseas visitors continuing right through the year,” Mr Massingham said. “Travellers from overseas are increasingly being drawn to the Noosa region’s natural beauty and are discovering the incredible range of visitor experiences on our doorstep. “With the recent launch of our Noosa Country Drive website, which has more than 100 touring experiences throughout the Noosa hinterland, we look forward to visitors spending even more time exploring when they’re here.” The major markets of UK, USA and Germany all recorded growth in the year, with UK visitor numbers increasing 33 per cent to 38,000 (also the fifth consecutive quarter of growth), Germany increasing 21 per cent to 20,600 and

Canada, Scandinavia and France also continue to show strong growth as emerging markets and between them now make up about onesixth of total international visitors to Noosa. International visitor nights also rose, with particularly strong increases from the highspending markets of the UK, which increased 20.5 per cent, and the USA which rose 39 per cent. “This sustained international growth is testament to the work Tourism Noosa has been doing with our international partners for some years,” Mr Massingham said. “With the launch in September of our Noosa Global Market Strategy, which maps our international direction over the coming years, we will continue to broaden our profile overseas and target areas of potential growth. “We will have some further exciting announcements in the New Year on the international front to benefit all businesses throughout Noosa.”
IT was a day of celebrations for local charity Sunshine Butterflies when they held their inaugural Christmas celebrations at their new property in Cooroibah. The five-acre hobby farm named Our Backyard will become the thriving new premises for the group next year, when a range of animal therapy programs will be added to the organisation’s already impressive list of facilities for the community. For the Christmas party, held last Tuesday 24 November, the farm was decorated for an authentic Australianthemed backyard Christmas with a barbecue and gum trees flickered with fairy lights, while Santa arrived on a mower. More than 150 guests were treated to a selection of Christmas carols sung by group members, plus a pantomime and a list of heartfelt speeches.

Judge settles it THE Noosa Regional Gallery has launched the Lyn McCrea Memorial Drawing Prize, established in memory of local arts supporter and gallery volunteer Lyn McCrea to promote excellence in contemporary Australian drawing. Noosa Regional Gallery director Nina Shadforth said the gallery was excited to be working with John McCrea to honour art collector Lyn and her passion for drawing, as well as raise drawing’s profile as a stand-alone art form. The prize is open to all practising Australian contemporary artists and Noosa Regional Gallery is accepting entries in the 2016 art prize until midnight on Sunday 31 January. The Lyn McCrea Memorial Drawing Prize will initially run for five years, offered annually, with a cash prize of $1000 in the first year, to increase by $250 each year

YES, I am a fanatical sports fan but some may not realise how passionate I am about music, and in particular how big a fan I am of arguably the most popular and influential entertainer of the 20th Century - Francis Albert Sinatra. The Chairman of the Board would have celebrated his 100th birthday this Saturday 12 December. Born in New York, the skinny Italian went on to sell over 250 million records worldwide. Frank first performed in Sydney Stadium in December 1961 without his smash hits New York Yew York, My Way or Strangers in the Night. What a life he lived, four wives, numerous affairs, seven number one singles, an Oscar for his 1953 portrayal of Maggio in From Here to Eternity, named Humanitarian of the Year by the Variety Clubs of America in 1983. And one of only five actors/actresses to have both had a number one single and Oscar for acting. The others include Cher, Barbara Streisand, Jamie Foxx and Bing Crosby. He was also awarded three stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Believe it or not, one of his favourite songs was “Something” written by George Harrison and performed by The Beatles. He was also known for his bad temper, and had a long-term dislike for actor Marlon Brando, calling him 'mumbles', in return Brando called him 'Mr Baldy'. Frank made numerous tours of Australia

but was most remembered for the 1974 bust up with the nation’s media. Australian Open winner Matt Jones first met the Shark in 1986, after a hole-in-one as a six year old at Sydney's Kareela Golf Club earned the fly-in meeting at the Australian Masters. Jones is quite open of his devotion to the former world number one: “He was my idol". Fellow worshiper Jason Day was presented with the inaugural Greg Norman Medal. Until next time.

Ken loved his view on life KEN Bosboom was well-known around Cooroy as the owner of Cooroy Car Parts which he ran with his wife Elona until he passed away seven years ago. Elona has sponsored a star in memory of Ken on the Ri-con Cooroy Christmas tree this year that was lit in a ceremony last Friday night at the Christmas in Cooroy celebrations. Ken worked as a mechanic since his teenage years and owned his own workshop for many years
before settling in Cooroy and running Cooroy Car Parts. Ken always had a smile on his face, was always happy to lend a hand wherever he could and loved chatting with all his customers. One of Ken’s favourite pasttimes was camping and four wheel-driving. His favourite spot was sitting on the back of his ute with a beer in hand, enjoying whatever view and company was around. Ken loved Cooroy and was
active in many areas such as the Cooroy Business Bowls and as a director on the board of the Cooroy RSL. The RSL was one of his favourite places to spend his spare time and he made many good friends there. “A star on the tree, right outside the RSL, which was so close to Ken’s heart, is such a fitting tribute to him. He was a wonderful man and I still miss him so much,” Elona said.

Crow captures the biggest one THE Sunshine Beach Surf Club Nippers program has received a massive boost thanks to the 800 supporters of the annual Ten Grand in the Hand fund-raiser. Held at the club last Sunday 29 November, along with live music, complimentary food and plenty of company, 20 people walked away winners with $100 mini-jackpot prizes, but only one lucky raffle ticket holder could take home the grand prize of $10,000. The winner was club member, club contributor and “all-round super bloke” Gerard Crow, who is now $10,000 richer just in time for the festive season. Surfshots photographer and club sponsorship manager Dave Gleeson was on hand at the event to snap the action.
It was smiles all round as the 800 event goers waited for the big draw at the Sunshine Beach Surf Club Ten Grand in the Hand annual fund-raiser.

Labor lacks lustre IT SEEMS Isobell McConnell (3 December) was unhappy with the number of people willing to pay $150 a head to attend the Labor Party’s Dinner with Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk to raise campaign funds for Labor candidate Mark Denham to try to become Noosa’s first party political councillor in March. I for one don’t believe it would have been appropriate for our mayor or senior council staff to have attended a party political fundraiser to attempt to chew the Premier’s ear.

Council politics HAVING just read about Mark Denham (3 December) and his intent to run for council next March, I’ve noticed an alarming trend: pollie creep. We now have three hats in the ring which have distinct party political badges pinned to them - Brian Stockwell and Mark Denham of the ALP and Aaron White for the Greens. None are making any effort whatsoever to maintain an independent stance. I find it difficult to imagine any councillor, so obviously aligned to a specific party, being able to shape responses to residents without recourse to the party line. Not neglected CONTRARY to claims your newspaper published last week (3 December), council is not neglecting public asset maintenance, nor delaying any capital works projects. Far from cutting capital works spending, council recently approved additional funding as part of the budget review process. It is also disrespectful to our committed and professional workforce to suggest the electoral cycle dictates the timing or delivery of programmed works. How rude! I COULD not agree more with Isobell McConnell’s comments (3 December) about the rudeness exhibited by the mayor, the “Mayoral Pretender” and the other guilty councillors when the Premier made a recent visit to Noosa. How do they ever expect the current government to pay heed to the problems that abound in Noosa and surrounds, like high youth unemployment, the TAFE situation, the lack of infrastructure, the encroachment of mining companies and the like, when they show such disrespect to our Premier? Does Noosa Council, its councillors, its mayor think they are so wonderful, they can go it alone without any assistance from the state? Not likely, with all the things needed to be done. Even our Prime Minister had to eat humble pie when he met the Queen. He is a staunch Republican, yet out of respect for the Queen and her office, he was most gracious to her. Our current local council could well take a leaf out of his book and learn how to treat our Premier and Ministers of State with the same degree of respect. I turn now to Mr Elmes’ really nasty letter on the same page and I make these comments. The TAFE in Tewantin remains idle and continues to fall into rack and ruin while all these stupid arguments, principally on a local level, run back and forth. It could be restored and turned into a vital resource for the training of our youth in a number of areas. That would keep some of our youth in the Noosa Shire, and
if business was encouraged to come on board, as has been done in other areas, it would lead to serious employment. Come on the people who are mucking around with this project ... let us get some action now, let us do something positive for Noosa. I also would like to state that Mr Elmes’ comments about the matter are distasteful and not becoming of a parliamentary representative for this area. K.L. Fielden, Tewantin.
Tour the website AFTER reading the article in Noosa Today (3 December) titled 'Country Drive to boost tourism in new initiative’ I decided to check out the website to get more information. I found some suggested drives and realised this would be a great boost to the small towns highlighted. The thing that concerns me is that the central route travels to Pomona via Louis Bazzo Drive. Has council seen the state of this 100km/h speed limited road? It has plants growing through the asphalt and more patchwork than a quilters' show. This road, which acts as the main link between Gympie, Pomona and Noosa, is in need of a major upgrade/ resurfacing. I travel this road every day and have watched it get worse every year. As a council I would be embarrassed to have tourists use this road. I welcome the tourists to the hinterland because we have a lot to offer but fear for their safety due to the lack of upgrading to our hinterland roads. R. Stacey, Pomona.
Calm down Glen OUR local member Glen Elmes seems upset someone had the temerity to question his inaction on the Noosa TAFE closure. When he was a minister in the previous LNP Government, he had a perfect opportunity to push the case for funding for Beckmans Road, to start the ball rolling on changing legislation to fix the river problems, to start discussions on re-opening the TAFE, and to help fix our youth unemployment, but he did none of these. SCIENTIFIC evidence and multiple studies, published in peer-reviewed scientific journals, state man-made climate change is unequivocal. Hundreds of thousands of people marched around the world supporting the shift for renewable energy and against climate change. Supporting this in Paris people left shoes, including the Pope! The study published in the journal Geophysical Research Papers found the 2011 floods were the direct results of climate change. Warmer ocean temperatures, increasing extra moisture, atmospheres continue to warm intensifying water vapour, leading to more frequent precipitation events. Repair bills amounting to billions of dollars and more deaths; Socialist Alliance Queensland's Ewan Saunders says "Worse still is the suffering of the people of this state, and the loss of irreplaceable belongings, heritage and livelihoods.” Action on climate change is imperative. QUT predict these events will increase. “Observations throughout the world make it clear that the evidence for rapid climate change
is compelling. Earth-orbiting satellites and other technological advances enabled scientists to see the big picture, collecting many different types of information about our planet and its climate on a global scale. This body of data, collected over many years, reveals the signals of a changing climate. Leading scientific organisations worldwide issued public statements endorsing this. The current warming trend is of particular significance because most of it is humaninduced and proceeding at a rate that is unprecedented in the past 1300 years. Member uninformed THERE'S more to the story of the closed TAFE than Glen Elmes revealed (3 December), or maybe he’s unaware of the review by his own Newman Government that led to the closure. To say TAFE itself closed the campus ignores the Liberal Newman Government downgrading TAFE vocational training to open up to private providers. First step by Mr Elmes’ government was a review of Queensland TAFE headed by Michael Roche, Executive Director of the Queensland Resources Council, mining lobbyist, to overhaul vocational education. The resulting report recommended closures, particularly small campuses, although government media releases only referred to large, old brick buildings unsuitable for modern training. Once word was out that Noosa TAFE would likely close, were students going to begin a course they couldn’t finish? What was the Sunshine Coast TAFE response? Stop marketing, transfer courses to other campuses in anticipation of this imposed scenario? Were numbers dropping those final few years for these reasons? The end result came two years later - amalgamation with Wide Bay TAFE to one single entity (East Coast TAFE) Maroochydore to Hervey Bay, and the closure of campuses, including Noosa. Early on a student sent a letter to Mr Elmes for clarification, and received a scoffing reply in a tone similar to his letter of 3 December. This was shown around campus. Either he didn’t know of a review by his own government or was being evasive and patronising. Either way, not great service from our local member. Joy Paul, Former librarian, Noosa TAFE.
Need for speed I READ with disappointment the comments from Robert Bulford of Eumundi about speed limits on our roads. As you might be aware, Noosa has a very large amount of “really terrible drivers” and after reading this letter I can understand why. They do not know the road rules. What I suggest is you re-run the article by Sergeant McRight of Noosa Heads Police Station (26 November) explaining what the road rules are concerning speed limits, that 100km/h is that and not slower, as these others think. IN RESPONSE to Marie-Louise Sarjeant (3 December), a national newspaper reported around half a million people marched in the recent climate change demonstrations. It would appear that the majority, 22.5 million Australians, think man-made global warming is a load of hogwash. As the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has admitted, adjusting temperature readings upwards to suit the IPPC’s climate change modelling, how many other other global BOMs have submitted falsified temperature readings to the IPPC? Then there is the IPPC. The IPPC is certain that 97 per cent of the scientists are certain that there is a 97 per cent certainty that their computer modelling is 97 per cent wrong. Scientists certainly believe 97 per cent of the data used in their models has been adjusted, most of the time. The expression GIGO is appropriate Garbage In, Garbage Out. Climate change scientists do not know how fast the planet is warming, nor do they know how much greenhouse gas emissions are contributing to global warming. Until scientists conduct climate change research according to the accepted principles of scientific methods and answer these two questions climate change is simply an assumption based on the panic and hysteria of half a million uninformed marchers. Formless rant IN RESPONSE to Phillip Rutherford’s formless rant denying any need to take responsibility for the planet, his scientific credentials are somewhat tarnished by announcing partisan conclusions before attempting a Google-fact justification. A real scientist would tell us that the proposition “climate has always varied, therefore anthropogenic influences can be disregarded” does not tick the logic box. Similarly, honest acknowledgement that even the most sophisticated computer models may not match the complexity of global climate systems is no reason to dismiss the consistently more alarming outcomes predicted by those models. The scientific hypothesis is that mankind is, maybe, quite likely, probably (the models are evolving), having an effect on the planet severe enough to create mass extinctions and migrations. The only logical response is to give this serious consideration in guiding our actions. Even if the hypothesis turns out to be wrong, it is hard to see a negative result from treating the planet with care. The alternate response, denial, is a gamble at the wrong table with, at best, a false-neutral outcome (carry on until it’s bitumen, weed-free lawn, concrete, and Mars looking good for a holiday) or, increasingly likely, find ourselves clinging to the life-raft, wishing we’d paid more attention in science class. It's science, stupid THE senate inquiry into wind farms had some inscrutable scientific submissions, most notably; ‘they are visually awful’. The Flat Earth Institute’s submission stated that ‘the turbines slow winds down, causing the Earth’s temperature to go up; they trap stardust, give people freckles and blow the Earth off its planet’. Other submissions about health concerns stated that wind turbines have caused herpes and haemorrhoids. The newly appointed Wind Force Commissioner (part-time) will receive $600,000 over three years to monitor the wind farm industry, respond to community complaints and health concerns -scientifically? Squire to face this awful loss, turning him against Demon Evil, forcing him out of town. The orphanage is saved and in true pantomime style, Polly ends up marrying her handsome Prince (Jayden Lee). Cooroy shows its Christmas spirit CHRISTMAS is off to a festive start with over 10,000 people attending the annual Christmas in Cooroy event held over two days last weekend. With a range of activities and live entertainment on offer, Christmas in Cooroy was guaranteed to bring a smile to the face of even the biggest Grinch. Cooroy Chamber of Commerce president and event organiser Danielle Taylor said the event grew bigger every year and was a great showcase of the Noosa community spirit.
This year saw over 70 Santas pound the pavement in the annual Noosa Plumbing Group Great Santa Race which raised over $1300 for the Leukaemia Foundation of Queensland. The Bendigo Bank Street Parade had 40 entries with Tadpoles Early Learning Centre taking out first place for the best float award for the second year running. The fun continues for the rest of December with the shop window trail and festive decorations adorning the streets including the beautiful Cooroy Christmas Tree.

Streets light up for night market THE first Eumundi Night Market for the 2015 festive season has been a great success with hundreds of locals and visitors visiting the markets to get into the spirit of Christmas. The first market was held on Friday 4 December, from 5pm to 9pm, with two more night markets to be held on Fridays 11 and 18 December at the same times. There is a host of family entertainment options from live music to arts and crafts for the little ones, street performers and family outdoor movies, not to mention shopping under the stars to get those last minute gifts.

IMPRESS friends and family this Christmas with warm, gooey gingerbread cookies. The Dairy Kitchen Australia has added a twist to traditional Christmas gingerbread cookies this festive season with their delicious chocolate stuffed gingerbread recipe. Serve cookies warm for a molten chocolate centre. Ingredients: 125g unsalted butter.
TO
1/2 cup dark brown sugar. 2 tablespoons molasses. 1 egg. 1 1/2 cups plain flour. 3/4 teaspoon bicarb of soda. 1 teaspoon ground ginger. 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon. 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg. Pinch of cloves. 80g dark cooking chocolate, broken into squares and each square halved.
Method: 1. Cream butter and sugar with an electric mixer until light and fluffy. Beat in molasses then gradually add egg, beating well until combined. Sift in the flour, soda and spices and stir into butter mix until combined into a very soft dough. Don’t worry if the dough is really soft, it should still roll into balls easily. 2. Roll 1/2 tablespoons of mixture into balls. Take a piece of chocolate and sandwich a ball of
dough on each side. Firmly press together ensuring the sides are sealed and roll into a ball. 3. Place balls on a baking paper lined tray about 5cm apart. Using a skewer, imprint Christmas patterns into the uncooked dough. Bake for 8-10 minutes at 180?C or until lightly browned and cooked through (they will be soft and cakey in texture). Allow to cool before removing from the baking tray and dusting with icing sugar.

THE Friends of Noosa Botanic Gardens have found an appropriate match between their activities and the name of their new president. Horticulturalist and regional ABC radio gardening presenter Paul Plant has been elected as the 2016 president of the Friends of the Noosa Botanic Gardens. Paul is also the editor and owner of the gardening magazine, Sub Tropical Gardening, on the Steering Committee for the recently established Friends of Brisbane Botanic Gardens and an active member of the Friends of Noosa Botanic Gardens. “I plan to proceed into 2016 with all the gusto and energy created over the past year by the Friends Committee, Garden Maintenance and Guides teams and all the volunteers,” Paul said. “My aim is to complete current projects; repeat flagship events such as the Father’s Day Plant Fair and develop new projects in conjunction with Noosa Council and its Noosa Botanic Gardens team.” Paul said he would like to implement a Living Collection Policy; a plant database and planning tool existing in other Botanic Gardens in Australia. “This document will provide guidelines on what and how to incorporate new plantings and how to protect and

ENROLMENTS are now open for the next term of the Noosa Regional Gallery after-school art program for children. The gallery held its endof-term celebrations yesterday for the latest groups of students to complete the program. Noosa Regional Gallery director Nina Shadforth said the program allowed children to thrive and explore their artistic ability. “Some of them have ex-
ceptional artistic ability and they thrive in this program. They’ll grasp complex artistic concepts and carry them through their own work,” Ms Shadforth said. Children are not only encouraged to explore their abilities but also to learn about the more practical side of art. “Students examine all sorts of styles of art, view current gallery exhibitions and apply what they’ve learned to practical tasks.
It’s lovely to see how they recognise within the exhibitions, ideas of what each artist has been trying to communicate and then convey that in their own work,” Ms Shadforth said. The program is open to children aged between 7 and 12 years with the new term starting 4 February 2016. Boats dressed for appeal By PETER MASON AHOY, there - it’s that time of year again and the organisers of one of Sunshine Coast’s most celebrated nautical events are appealing for support for the best-ever Christmas boating flotilla. The Noosa Waters flotilla, which celebrates its 18th anniversary this year, will take place next Friday 18 December. The event regularly sees up to 100 brightly decorated watercraft join in the festivities and compete for a place in the best-dressed-boat roll of honour. Organisers are hoping to make this year’s nautical pa-
rade one of the biggest and best ever, and will be looking to better the record turnout of five years ago when over 100 tinsel-adorned boats of all shapes and sizes took part. Noosa Waters Residents Association president Dick Patterson said with such a fabulous waterway right on their back-step, he wanted to encourage all boat-owning residents to light-up their boats and take part. “At the same time we want to provide a special Christmas treat to the thousands of spectators who are expected to flock to Noosa from all over the coast to watch,” he said. “We want this to be Noo-
sa’s best-ever Christmas flotilla.” Noosa Community Radio 101.3 FM is one of the key promoters and will be calling the event as it happens and playing Christmas Carols from 6 to 8pm on the night. Boats will assemble at the Saltwater Avenue/Masthead Quay bridge from 6.30pm, with the parade scheduled to start at 6.45pm. Noosa Coast Guard boats will lead out the parade after signalling the start with two blasts from their air horns. Pineapple patch from scratch to great catch

WHEN confronted with a barren piece of Sunshine Beach State School’s landscape that was best described as dry and dusty, the students saw a wonderful opportunity to get creative. Resident permaculture gardener Di Seels, who is always encouraging everyone to 'think outside, with no box required’ asked the Sunshine Beach learners to come up with a solution and that’s exactly what they did. The learners decided to turn the land into a pineapple patch. What a great way to turn a piece of unused sandy land into an attractive and productive addition to the already flourishing permaculture garden, and so Sunshine Beach State School’s pineapple patch complete with mosaic tiling was created. Year 4 learner Cassi said pineapples were actu-
ally quite easy to grow. “You just get pineapples with their green spikey tops still on from the market and snap the top off by twisting it. Then you let them dry off, find the little roots under the dead leaves and plant them,” she said. Bella explained pineapples like a lot of Sunshine. “At Sunshine Beach State School, we have lots of that and now we have lots of pineapples too,” she said. “Once you have planted the pineapple tops you then just need to have a little patience. Soon enough tiny pineapples start to grow on the top of the bit that you planted. They will grow bigger and bigger until they are ripe and ready to pick.” This year the permaculture garden has had a bumper crop with several harvests of a variety of herbs, fruit, eatable flowers and vegetables, including a massive rockmelon-
sized sweet potato. The fresh produce has been shared with the school tuck-shop or sold to families for a coin donation, via the ‘Sunshine Kids Market Cafe’ another idea generated by the Sunshine Beach learners. The donations help to purchase more seeds for next year’s crops. Di said the permaculture garden was an ever evolving part of the school and the school was very welcoming of donations of seeds, seedlings and, of course, pineapple tops. Learners from all year levels get to experience and appreciate the beauty, peacefulness, joy and outside learning opportunity of the permaculture garden. Prep learners particularly enjoy watching plants grow from seedlings to eatable plants and participating in environmental art projects.
Their act for shelter POMONA State School students have rallied together to raise $240 for the Rotary Club of Corooy’s Shelterbox project. Shelterbox is an international disaster relief agency that seeks to provide shelter, warmth and dignity to families who have lost their homes to disaster. Shelter is provided in the form of a family-sized tent, thermal blankets, water purification equipment, a stove, basic took kit, solar light and a children’s activity pack. The students raised the money through the Rotary sponsored group, EarlyAct, which is a service club that offers students aged 5 to 13 the opportunity to gain increased awareness and knowledge of their community and the wider world. WHAT a week we’ve just had for pro surfing, with the waves pumping on Oahu and Maui, maybe not so much on Hainan Island in China, but Sunny Coast surfers laying on a rail and putting it all on the line around the world. Of course the biggest news for locals was Julian Wilson’s stellar form in macking Sunset Beach waves for the Vans World Cup. After smashing every heat on his way to the final, Jules couldn’t find a backup to beat a rampaging Mick Fanning, but his second placing signalled his intent for this week’s Billabong Pipe Masters, where he is the defending champion. In my opinion Pipe is where Mick Fanning will continue the best form of his career to claim his fourth world title, equalling the great Mark Richards for the most world titles for an Australian man. At 34, Mick will never catch Kelly’s 11, nor is he likely to match Layne Beachley’s seven, but what a fantastic effort from this guy, to come back from the jaws of death (quite literally) and face down the Brazilian Storm with solid rail to rail surfing. I know, I know ... he can be beaten (and I’m writing this before Pipe even starts) but I just don’t think he’s going to be denied this year. But let’s get back to Julian, who is surfing with such power and authority. Ranked number seven going into Pipe, he was only a mathematical possibility for his first world title, needing everyone else to fall over and break a leg, but another great performance will put him in the conversation for next year. And I can’t help thinking where he would be now, in relation to a title, if things had gone differently at Jeffreys Bay five months ago. The thing I’ve noticed about Julian in the last couple of seasons is that he now has the firepower to win anywhere. Whether it’s Cloudbreak, Chopes, The Box, Snapper, the beachbreaks of Les Landes or the bowels of a Pipe monster, if he gets to the pointy end of the event, he looks like he owns the place. Witness Sunset last week. That place at triple overhead is full of tricks for young players, but Julian carved off the bottom and snapped off the top like he was born to it, like John John, who was, in fact. Last July, on the first wave of the final, he looked like he owned J-Bay, but then the ex-

Of course, at the time nothing mattered less. They were both safe, that was all that counted. But it’s interesting to ponder how it might have played out, had Julian taken his first win of the season that fateful day. Meanwhile on Maui, the girls tour wrapped up with the Target Pro, held in perfect Honolua Bay. I only managed to catch a few of the preliminary heats, but finals day was awesome, with Sally Fitzgibbons pushing Carissa Moore all the way for her third world title. In the end Carissa claimed the crown in the semis, and then went on to steal the event from Sally with a perfect 10. Sally finished the year in third position, the highest-ranked Australian after another solid year. A world title can’t be far away. But it must seem like a couple of worlds away for Buderim’s Dimity Stoyle, who was bundled out in round two at Honolua and will not requalify for 2016. This is a huge disappointment for Dimity, and for all her many fans, because although she’s been a tour battler, at some points - notably Lower Trestles, where she finished third - she’s really looked the goods in competition. As I write, the Jeep Longboard World Titles are underway on Hainan Island, China, with Aussies Chelsea Williams in the women's and defending champ Harley Ingleby in the men's both looking strong. But Sunny Coaster Nic Jones was a round two elimination in small waves last Sunday, when he fell to Reunion’s Aurelien Meynieux after blowing a potential

End of the road in Mexico Dean Lucas and Adam Coleman had a plan when they caught the ferry from the Baja California port of Loreto for the Mexican mainland in late November. The plan was to drive their van south to Guadalajara, pick up Adam’s girlfriend, and drive south again, to the perfect right-hand point breaks that dot the Pacific coast all the way to Guatemala. The plan went tragically wrong when they were intercepted by a gang of bandidos who shot them both in the head, took everything of value from the van and torched both bodies and vehicle. Just another night of horror in rural Mexico. The evidence suggests the West Australian surfers, both aged 33, had done nothing wrong or foolhardy. They just found them-
selves on the wrong road at the wrong time. The tragedy reminded me of our own road trip in Mexico last year, one friends strongly advised against. I ignored the advice because I love Mexico and have only good experiences to report after numerous trips through Baja and the mainland since the 1970s. But there was a moment when we hit the coast road after driving hours through the mountains. A group of men in ragged uniforms pulled us over into a dusty lot. They were smiling so I wound down the window to see what they wanted. A man grunted some words in Spanish and thrust a handful of papers at me. I studied them. They were 20 percent discount vouchers for a cantina in the next town. Gracias, senor. Adios. We were on the wrong road, but luckily it was the right time.

Reefs prove popular choice WITH the wind up over the last couple of weeks the offshore scene has been a little quiet, for those that did make it outside it has usually been a quick run to the closer reefs, Sunshine Reef, Jew Sholes and Halls Reef have all been popular with the early birds. Pelagics have been on the mind of most anglers with the onset of the warmer currents coming down from the north, most have seen good activity, mackerel, be it spotted or spanish, have been landed with the occasional spanish sneaking over the metre mark, dolphin fish have also been around with a couple of large rough bulls seen cruising the surface, long tail tuna are also in the mix and are harassing bait schools on the
high tide. Floater type bait fishing has been the most successful, with trolled hardbodies also doing the job. If you come across a school of tuna feeding on a bait school slugs are your best bet. As the wind is due to abate this week we should see more report for the outer reefs. In the river it has been all about the mangrove jacks, there have been some crackers caught over the last few weeks with fish over the 50cm mark very common. Live bait fished late into the evening has been the most successful, soft plastics and hard bodies have also been going well. Fishing the structure is always the key when fishing for jacks so areas like Tewantin
harbour and Noosa Sound are favourite spots for local anglers. The area between the lakes has also been well represented with some nice fish taken from the tree lined edges of the river. Down-river Gympie Terrace has been popular with families taking advantage of the sun. Whiting have been the mainstays with bream and trevally also in the mix, the good old prawns are always a popular bait, let's face it everything eats a prawn. With the recent afternoon storms the mud crabs have been on the move running right throughout the river. Fresh mullet cut into chunks seems to be getting the most attention. The successful crabbing areas have been
the Weyba Creek, and the upper reaches of the Noosa River. Remember crabs must be 15cm across the carapace to keep and the bag limit is 10 and you can only take the bucks. On the beach the wind has also made things a little tough, an early morning start has been the key. As we move into the new moon later this week and with the lighter forecast winds, we should see things greatly improve on the beach. Make sure you look for those gutters and fish a couple of hours either side of the tide. So on behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures! – JACK MANGROVE

For some of the Prep learners it is the first time they have had actual swimming instruction, for others they are further developed and are strengthening their swimming strokes and kicking actions, all under the watchful eyes of the experienced swim staff of the NAC. Prep teacher Kellie Moody said she enjoys watching her learners build confidence in the water environment and learn skills such as floating on their back, finding the edge of the pool, and pulling themselves out of the water. “The learners absolutely love their weekly lessons and I can see them becoming more capable each

Nippers duck in for a prize By GEN FRASER AT THE halfway point of the season the Noosa Nippers were able to show the results of their hard work at the Club Championships held on Sunday. All ages hit the surf and sand with
Nippers having to navigate a two metre swell in the board events. A big shout out to all the extra helpers who helped run and record the events. Nippers will celebrate the break in the season from 5pm this Friday
11 December at the famous Noosa Heads Surf Club Great Duck Race held on Main Beach. Up to 500 ducks will be released offshore and to make their way to the beach with the first one to arrive delivering $1000 to the lucky owner.
Tickets are $40 and include a racing duck plus dinner, beer, wine and soft drink on the beach. Anyone can buy a racing duck and tickets are available from the Noosa Heads Surf Club, Noosa Aquatic Centre, Noosa Junction Bakers Delight and
the Tewantin Deli and Cafe Takeaway. All proceeds of the duck sales go to the Noosa Nippers. Nippers are also reminded that the Nippers season will re-commence on 10 January 2016 so we wish everyone a Safe and Happy Christmas and New Year.
Vital training for rescue crews on rubber duckies Between the

IT IS an ongoing mission; the recruitment and training of our surf club members wishing to join the IRB (Inflatable Rescue Boat) rescue teams. Happy to relate, this season the recruitment drive has been successful. One of the major contributing factors has without a doubt been the close and now joint working relationship that now exists between Sunshine Beach, Noosa and Peregian. In the words of Sunshine Beach captain Scott Summers: “The work relationship between our clubs is fantastic, probably the best ever, just the way it should be. Training on the same level we all get to know each other very well and in rescue patrol work this is of the utmost importance.” On Thursday evening of last week another squad of six crewies and two drivers started their training by attending a lecture evening hosted by the Sunshine Beach Club. With a combination of instructors and trainees there was a total of thirteen clubbies from Noosa and Sunshine Beach in attendance. Under the chairmanship of Steven Boyd of Sunshine the rookies received a very full and detailed introduction as to what lay ahead. A DVD of the type of surf they would be required to work in was shown. Also during the evening Trevor King, a veteran of some 37 years, was one who stressed the importance of the wash down and maintenoosa.starcommunity.com.au
naince checks. Trainees were made to understand that this section of the course was of the utmost importance as lives could depend on the upkeep of their craft. Following this, the team was taken into the gear room where Chris Grandemange gave an introductory talk on the craft itself. The team was then informed that their surf training would commence at 7.30am Saturday at the Noosa club. It was during this part of the briefing that the hint of discipline started to appear for the rookies were informed that a 7.30 start meant that they were required to assemble at no later than 7.15am. This would ensure the necessary boat and gear check was carried out before the boats entered the water. This attitude is of the utmost importance for a rescue team without discipline is doomed to fail. The Saturday session would be followed by another on Sunday with both running over a period of some three and a half hours. The water training would be conducted in various areas such as Noosa's Main Beach, Noosa River Mouth and First Cutting Noosa's North Shore. The choice of these areas was up to the instructors and their final choice would depend on the surf conditions plus the level of competence that the team has achieved. Next weekend the training will be conducted at Sunshine Beach and Alexandria Bay. During these sessions the crewies are exposed to parallel running (that is craft running inside the break), punching through waves and most important of all the patient pick up. This particular exercise is of the utmost importance for the rescue
