Race off to flying start THE sixth annual Noosa Gift Carnival was off to a flying start on Saturday, with more than 200 open and junior athletes competing for over $11,000 in prize money. Track event organiser Ian Smith said Noosa Gift organisers were impressed with the quality of athletes competing in events in what is the event’s sixth year. Athletes travelled from NSW and throughout Queensland to take part in the one-day track and field event that brings together junior and adult athletes. Ian said the races were close, with Noosa Little Athletics finish line officials kept busy with the electronic timing and videos. Ian said the event couldn’t happen without the support of local sponsors such as the Noosa Heads Lifesaving Supporters Club, which also helps with the Athlete Development Scholarships for young athletes to progress their abilities. MP for same-sex MEMBER for Noosa Glen Elmes said he would vote in favour of restoring civil unions in Queensland after Liberal National Party MPs were granted a free vote on the issue. The decision was made at a party room meeting on Monday, and will now allow MPs to decide for themselves whether to vote for or against the Relationships (Civil Partnerships) and Other Acts Amendment Bill 2015.

The Bill is a proposal by the Palaszczuk Government to restore state-sanctioned civil partnership ceremonies for straight and same-sex couples with debate expected to take place in State Parliament next week. Mr Elmes said he welcomed the decision to provide a free vote for members of the party when deciding the outcome of the Bill. “During the time Civil Unions have been available in Queensland, 1227 same-sex civil unions took

place,” Mr Elmes said. “While during the same period, 6856 heterosexual unions were conducted. I will be voting in favour of the legislation.” Local same-sex marriage advocate Robin Bristow said the Noosa LGBTI community welcomed the “positive news” that Mr Elmes would be voting in favour of the Bill, but added they couldn’t forget he was part of the government that reversed the “rights for equality”.

“It is not easy for us to forget (Mr Elmes) was part of the Newman Government cabinet that removed these rights just a few weeks of them coming into power (in 2012) by using emergency legislation,” Mr Bristow said. “We are glad to see Mr Elmes will be making amends having changed his views of this matter. We also wish to thank the Palaszczuk Government for keeping their election promise on this matter.”

Council in court - again? By JOLENE OGLE THE recent rejection of the proposed broiler farm in Cooroy could land Ccouncil back in the Planning and Environment Court, making this the 17th appeal in the court against a council decision. At the ordinary meeting on Thursday 19 November, Councillors voted to reject the planned development despite planning staff recommending it for approval. If the poultry farm application does end up in the Planning and Environment Court it will be the 17th appeal to appear before the court where Noosa Council is the respondent, since January 2014. Noosa Council Planning and Environment Manager Kerri Coyle said there have been 16 appeals relating to “Noosa area development matters” since 2014, some of which started with the Sunshine Coast Regional Council

Bear koalas in mind THE local creator of the koala tracking project KoalaTracker is warning locals to be extra vigilant this summer to help reduce the impact of what is known as “trauma season” for native animals. Alex Harris said now more than ever locals and visitors need to be extra careful when driving or walking their dogs as they will see koalas ambling long distances on the ground in the search for a mate. “So it is now we have to be hyper-vigilant of koalas crossing roads or strolling bushland paths and parks, and our own backyards,” she said. “There’s no guessing why it is called trauma season and it continues through to around March,” Alex said. THE Sunshine Coast Business Council (SCBC) has slammed Noosa Council’s decision to abstain from making a submission in regards to the planned Sunshine Coast Airport expansion, claiming the council is “sitting on the fence”. The airport expansion plans are currently open to the community for comment until 30 November, with many concerned the proposed new flight paths will impact Noosa Shire residents. Concerned resident Michael Petty wrote an open letter to the Noosa Council earlier this month asking if the council was concerned about the possible noise

impacts of the changed flight path. “From the lack of objection to date it appears Noosa Council is not worried by the impact of noise and pollution over residential areas including the much-touted Noosa Biosphere Reserve, which holds itself out to promote the benefits of living in a Biosphere reserve such as conservation and sustainable development with an environmentally sensitive focus,” he said. “This is hardly consistent with living under a busy flight path.” Mr Petty said he wanted to make it clear he was not opposed to the airport expansion, but he was opposed to moving the flight path over Noosa. SCBC chairwoman Sandy Zu-

brinich said the Noosa Council’s decision not to make a submission was a “passive approach to what is an important part” of the region’s future. Ms Zubrinich said it was particularly concerning when several of the mayors in the catchment areas covering Fraser Coast, Burnett and Moreton Bay had indicated their support for the expansion of the airport. “In addition to the high number of domestic travellers journeying to Noosa each year, the area consistently attracts well over 100,000 international visitors annually, many of which arrive on the Sunshine Coast by plane,” she said. “So it’s curious Noosa Council has decided to sit on the fence in

this instance.” Ms Zubrinich said it was important for councilors to show leadership when it came to major regional developments. “While I understand we are less than six months from local government elections, it is at times like this councillors need to show leadership and clearly explain why they do or don’t support a major infrastructure project,” she said. Mr Zubrinich said it will be difficult to plan for the future of the region if two councils disagree on the overall direction and prosperity of the region. Elderly drivers are under microscope By JOLENE OGLE LOCAL police are calling on the community to keep an eye out for elderly drivers who might need to surrender their licence. The call comes after an 89-year-old driver is believed to have turned into the path of an oncoming motorcycle in Tewantin on Monday afternoon (23 November). According to police, the 35-year-old rider was travelling west along Hilton Esplanade when he collided with a fourwheel drive travelling in the opposite direction at about 4.30pm. The rider was taken to Noosa Hospital with serious head injuries before being airlifted to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital. While investigations are continuing, Noosa Heads officerin-charge Senior Sergeant Steve McReight said it is becoming more common for elderly drivers to be involved in crashes. “We are finding more and more locals in their mid-70s and mid-80s are involved in accidents throughout Noosa,” he said. “In most cases we find their driving is not up to standard, resulting in the crashes.” According to the latest statistics from the Department of Transport and Main Roads, there have been 218 fatalities on Queensland roads from 1 January to 22 November this year, with 12.9 per cent of the accidents

INBRIEF Drink drivers SEVEN drink drivers were caught in Noosa over three hours on Saturday night. In a joint operation with other road units, Noosa police charged seven drivers with drink driving with drivers returning blood alcohol content readings from 0.66 per cent to .161 per cent. The traffic operation took place on Saturday night from 11.30pm to 2.30am on Sunday morning. Officer-in-charge Senior Sergeant Steve McReight said motorists need to expect more police resources on the roads throughout the holiday season. “We have more resources so there will be more random breath test sites in the coming weeks,” he said.

Correction IN a story printed last week, Noosa Today reported that eight bicycles were stolen from the Noosa Triathlon transition compound at Lions Park, Noosa Heads, throughout the threeday event. Local police have since made corrections stating eight bicycles were stolen but from various locations such as from the back of cars and holiday units. A Noosa Triathlon spokesperson said the safety and security of competitors was vital and there were no thefts or incidents reported in the transition compound this year.

Snr Sgt McReight said relatives and neighbours can help by keeping an eye on elderly drivers. “We know it’s hard to give up independence, but sometimes a quiet word in an elderly relative’s ear can save future trauma by them agreeing to surrender their licence,” he said.

“The other option is the police can send elderly drivers back to the Department of Transport for re-testing to make sure their driving is up to standard.” Investigations are continuing into the crash on Hilton Terrace on Monday afternoon. LOCAL police have weighed in to a recent discussion in the Letters to the Editor pages of Noosa Today regarding drivers who travel at 80km/h in a 100km/h zone. Senior Sergeant Steve McReight said drivers who travel below the speed limit can keep to the left land when there are two lanes, but if they are travelling on a single land road it is courteous to pull over to let traffic pass. Snr Sgt McReight said it is an offence to drive “abnormally slow” to cause an obstruction and police will take action if a vehicle is holding up traffic. “If a vehicle is holing up traffic then they are driving without due consideration,” he said. “As such, we will take action.”

Complex enjoys luxury of internet with speedy broadband GROWING frustrations with slow internet has led to a luxury complex being the first in Noosa to sign-up for a new broadband system. Our Community Broadband (OCB) has joined forces with CCIQ Noosa to deliver a fixed wireless broadband aerial network to the Elysium complex, with installation expected to be completed before Christmas. CCIQ Noosa president Peter Chenoweth said while the chamber didn’t endorse any particular internet provider it had been investigating options for fast, affordable and reliable

broadband service in the shire after NBN Co told the chamber it didn’t expect to be able to provide a service in Noosa until 2017. Mr Chenoweth said that Elysium has shown the rest of Noosa the power of collaboration to solve community issues. “This will be the first OCB aerial in the Noosa shire and is currently scheduled to be live before Christmas,” he said. “The timing of this scheduled installation is significantly in advance of CCIQ Noosa’s aspiration to have

the first aerial installed by 30 June 2016.” Mr Chenoweth said Elysium’s decision was a “game-changer” and credits the “unusually rapid adoption” of the wireless technology to the local groundswell of “desperation for fast, affordable broadband”. “It not only manifests new hope for broadband for the shire, it may turn out to be the first step for the shire on the path towards Silicon Beach,” he said. OCB co-founder and director Andy Whitmore had been looking for 200 small businesses and resi-

dents within a two kilometre radius to get a broadband project in Noosa. “Due to the collective effort of the community at Elysium, Our Community Broadband is delighted to announce its arrival in Noosa six months ahead of schedule,” he said. Elysium Noosa body corporate secretary Geoff Brinckman said the new broadband would be a significant step forward as internet services were “normally ineffective due to the totally inadequate copper cable” currently available. “Following representations by many frustrated residents, a reliable

fixed wireless broadband service, which could provide speeds well in excess of what is being received through the existing network, was investigated,” he said. “There was overwhelming support to approve the community’s contribution to the cost of the infrastructure. The OCB available plans are very cost-effective.” Mr Brinckman said the 100-plus residents taking up the OCB plan could switch to NBN if they wanted, if and when an improved alternative service was available.

Only a week after we celebrated the life of 1991 inductee Jim Achurch, the tradition continues with Australian Touch Footy star Peta Rogerson joining the superstar list. Peta the daughter of Cr Greg Rogerson has finally hung up her boots after a stellar career winning two World Cups. The evening also doubled as the monthly Sport Star nominees’ presentation for the period of June to October. During that time-line, 10 different sports, represented by six woman and four men all with Australian champions or in Aussie teams. Tewantin apprentice plumber Larissa Crummer led the way in June after her stunning on-field efforts for the Matildas in the World Cup finals. She was represented by her family, as she is on national team duties overseas,

no doubt with many more to come. Noosa life saver Jordan Mercer was next after her domination at the World Paddleboard titles, she is set for a massive summer of surf. London Olympian Shara Gillow was back home at Belli Park as she prepares for another tilt on the world cycling stage. Following in David's, her 1980 Moscow Olympian father's, tyre marks, Shara is bound for Rio. Triathlete Annalise Jefferies - a Top 10 finisher recently at Noosa - was buoyed by her win in the under-23 world duathlon a week earlier. For me the highlight was introducing 6’5" basketballer Tom Fullerton who just arrived back from the AIS in Canberra. Tom captained and led Australia to victory over New Zealand and qualified for next world championships. I know he’ll enjoy the beach over the holidays but will play in the local Coast summer competition. The newly formed Coast Basketball Association is bouncing along very nicely under the leadership of Noosa’s Carl Wilkinson. I believe his group is presently in talks with numerous high profile

Boxing great Jeff Fenech was pretty direct in his opinion as to which direction Anthony Mundine should take after his recent TKO. The three-time world champion suggested the Man should retire immediately, and certainly not get in the ring with Danny Green. Jeff went as far to say, the boxing officials would bring the sport into disgrace if they allowed the fight to proceed. The point is, a good big man will also beat a good little man. Green is far too big for Mundine, it's as simple as that, unfortunately most boxing enthusiasts just want to see them bash each other again. Jeff will be on the Coast for a special luncheon on 11 December, at Mooloolaba Surf Club. No doubt Jeff will share many more thoughts on boxing and some guff on his mates like Mike Tyson. WITH temperatures expected to stay in the 30s throughout the week, police are urging locals and visitors to never leave their dogs in a hot car. The warning comes as more and more people post photos to local Facebook group, Sunny Coast Community Board, condemning pet owners for leaving their dogs in cars with the window down only a fraction. One Facebook user and Noosa local Kara Chaplin posted a photo to the page of a Jeep parked at Noosa Civic on Sunday with a small dog locked in a cage at the back of the car. Kara said the car was parked in the shade and the windows were down about 4cms, but “that’s not enough, the dog was barking its head off”. “I can’t understand why people do it,” she said. “I always say to the owners, you sit in the car and see how hot it is.” Kara said it was a hot day on Sunday and while she wanted to smash the car window to get the dog out, she knew there might be legal issues. “It leaves people like us in such a predicament as it’s not legal to smash the window,” she said. Noosa Heads officer-in-charge Senior Sergeant Steve McReight said it was an offence to leave the windows of an unattended vehicle down, but it was also an offence and cruel to leave a dog in a hot car. When asked if it is an offence to smash a car’s window to retrieve a dog, Sen Sgt McReight said it was best to phone for help. “Technically, the person who would smash the window legally has no right to as it is not their property and while people may be acting in good faith, they can find themselves in legal strife,” he said. “Save yourself from possible litigation and phone the police or fire service immediately. We treat these situations as a priority.” According to the RSPCA there were over 110,000 calls received each year, with 1097 distress calls about animals being left in cars

The push to ban the bag comes after the community

jury recommended to rid the shire of plastic earlier this year. One solution to reduce the use of plastic bags is the introduction of Boomerang Bags in local businesses throughout the shire. Boomerang Bags aim to reduce plastic bag use in the biosphere by offering a sustainable alternative to singleuse bags should a shopped forget their reusable bag. Noosa resident and plastic pollution campaigner Desire Gralton has been working with NCBA, the Noosa Men’s Shed, Noosa Council, Peregian Beach shop owners and various other community organisations to get the project up and running. “We have set ourselves an almighty task of making 2000 re-useable bags for the community of Noosa,” Desire said.

Ron’s a star in life and death ONE of the Cooroy Ri-con Christmas Tree stars will shine extra bright this year for a man who had a caring heart and a deep love for his family and community, Ron Scott. A retired pharmacist, Ron passed away in October this year, and his wife Irene said a star on the tree was a fitting tribute for Ron “as he was my shining star and I deeply miss him”. Ron re-established the pharmacy in Eumundi after a previous closure, and was involved in the building of the shopping complex where the pharmacy is still located today under new ownership.

He was a hardworking, dedicated man who was passionate about his profession and the health of his community and customers and always loved helping people. Ron had a soft spot for animals and it wasn’t uncommon for local pooches to be found in the pharmacy enjoying the airconditioning and a treat from the cookie jar. Family fun laced with safety NOOSA Council has combined family entertainment with safety during its Get Ready Friday campaign, a series of free outdoor family movies on the first three Fridays in December. TAFE disgrace THERE is a very good reason why the Noosa TAFE became unviable in 2014. The Newman Government dramatically increased TAFE fees, putting the courses offered out of the reach of young people. This destructive move saw student numbers plummet and across the state these assets were slated for sale to the private sector. At the same time the Federal LNP government allocated $1.3 billion for the private sector to loan to students for skills training at private, often foreign-owned, under-equipped facilities. These loans put our most vulnerable citizens into debt. Since their inception in the 19th century, TAFE institutes have been a social safety net, were people whose education had been interrupted could enrol to acquire the training and skills needed to secure employment. Current LNP thinking is that we can save money by importing skilled workers who will accept lower rates of pay than Australians. By attempting to systematically destroy our TAFE system they are failing our unemployed youth, who are being blocked from the opportunity to become employable, or to be able to start their own businesses. The nearest TAFE, at Nambour, is a long way away, particularly on public transport, for our poorest people to travel to. Many unemployed locals need an accessible, properly functioning TAFE to help them better their lives, and to in turn enrich our local community. Shame on Glen Elmes for failing to see the social and financial benefits that this would bring. He should be wholeheartedly supporting the re-opening of this valuable facility. Joy Ringrose, Pomona.

I REFER to John Lobb’s recent letter (19 November) complaining council had not received an update on the capital program at its latest meeting. In fact a very detailed report was provided to the Infrastructure and Services Committee Meeting held on 10 November (Agenda Item 5), a meeting that Mr Lobb actually attended himself. The report identified the capital program was progressing well and that at the end of October, 44 per cent of the $27.4 million budget was either spent or committed, it also stated that no planned capital jobs were on hold. Who wants to eat? IN REGARDS to council’s decision to reject the broiler farm application in Cooroy and the 60 or so people who were at council with their signs protesting the intensive farm. I would like to know how many of you had bacon for breakfast? How many had chicken the night before? I find it hypocritical that people will protest a man’s right to farm his own land, albeit intensive farming, when they will happily eat meat intensively farmed elsewhere. Out of sight, out of mind, hey? I don’t support intensive farming, but I support that view by not eating meat or wearing animal products such as leather. Turning up to council and protesting a person’s planned farming practices while taking part in those practices that happen in other towns is just another case of Noosa’s “not in my backyard” approach. What facts? AS A retired civil engineer, I am becoming increasingly appalled with the blatant propaganda being put forward by the global warming alarmists in the guise of “scientific fact". It is without doubt the greatest unsubstantiated scare campaign in the history of mankind, led by the Greens and those on the left of politics, with the sole aim of taxing the air that we breathe (something my mother and those of her generation always said that the politicians couldn’t do - she will be turning in her grave). The propaganda is becoming even more extremist the closer we get to the Paris conference on anthropogenic global warming. Let us dispel a few of the myths: the climate is always changing, there is no convincing scientific basis for anthropogenic global warming. The IPCC’s projected temperature rise is based solely on computer modelling and even the CSIRO adds a disclaimer to their computer modelling based climate change report such that “models involve simplifications of the real processes that are not fully understood" and “accordingly, no responsibility will be accepted by the CSIRO for the accuracy of forecasts or predictions inferred from their reports." As the saying goes in regard to computers, GIGO (garbage in, garbage out). The late 20th century temperature rise was not unprecedented (global temperatures were higher in 1934 and in the mediaeval warming period around 900 AD) and peaked in 1998. The globe has since been in a slight cooling phase for the last 17 years, notwithstanding an increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide is not a pollutant. A rise in levels would be beneficial to plant growth and would boost human food production. Carbon dioxide levels were in excess of 7000 ppm during the Cambrian period (400 ppm today) and associated at the time with an explosion of life on earth. Historical records show that a rise in the level of carbon dioxide follows, and does not cause, a rise in global temperatures. Forecast catastrophic rise in sea-level as a result of the increase in carbon dioxide and hence global warming is false. Even the IPCC acknowledge that no significant acceleration in the rate of sea-level rise during the 20th century has been detected. Acidification of the oceans is a misnomer, the oceans are alkaline at a pH of around 8.5 in surface waters. A pH of 7 is neutral and a pH below 7 is acidic. There may be a slight reduction in alkalinity but the oceans are not becoming acidic. Polar icecaps are not melting dangerously, instead accreting ice on their interiors, and the number of polar bears is not decreasing.

The intensity and number of tropical storms are not increasing - for example, 2009 represented a low point in the global energy index of tropical storm power over the last 35 years. Land-based windmills are less than 25 per cent efficient and have to be supported by continuously operating fossil fuel or nuclear power stations. This is also the case for solar power stations. Of the reportedly “2500 climate scientists“ contributing to the IPCC reports, only around 50 are responsible for Chapter 9, Understanding and Attributing Climate Change, and most of the others are not climate scientists but economists, environmental lobbyists, activists and the like. Even the IPCC co-chairman, Dr Pachauri, is not a climate scientist, his background is railway engineering. The alarmists have been unable to refute any of the above and it is about time they stopped attacking the messenger, admitted that they are wrong, and ceased trying to foist a crippling tax on us that will not do anything to stop their so-called climate change (man-made global warming). Such a tax will just make lobbyists like Al Gore and his ilk richer with their manipulation of any carbon trading scheme. Phillip Rutherford, Cooroibah.

Another Paris AS A young Frenchman, one of my first jobs as a messenger in Paris was daily deliveries to the Charlie Hebdo office, where I got to meet many of the journalists who lost their lives a few months ago in a terrible attempt against freedom of expression. Before I travelled the world and immigrated to this wonderful country, my Parisian friends, relatives and I would often spend wonderful nights in the exact same locations that have been senselessly attacked last weekend. Even though none of my friends or family have been affected in this latest atrocity, it reduced me to tears. The world is waking up to this sickening threat and showing wonderful solidarity to the French victims in their grief and willingness to stand up to evil. I do believe that it is very important that people all over the world do not get confused between those sick extremists who have been conducting attacks all over the world and the peaceful Muslims. The majority of Muslims who have immigrated to this country are peace-loving citizens, who are very grateful to Australia for giving them a new life. I am not a religious man myself, but I do believe that everyone is entitled to their own belief as long as it doesn’t impose on others. But ultimately, it is vital that the Muslim community join the rest of the world and denounce and disassociate themselves from these evil terrorists. Resistance puzzling ONE wonders sometimes why intelligent people fight to do something that doesn’t fit in with the lifestyle of the area. The Peregian Beach bowls club site and the fight to keep it from the hands of the developer was won. The Lake Weyba development went down the drain as did the Sekisui development that the people down around Coolum didn’t want. There’s a lot of letters and angst about a chicken farm recently in local newspapers. Like a lot of things, there is a place for everything, so why then do people keep trying to build this chicken factory when they know it’s a dead loss? My advice is to sell off your land you have owned for some years, and move down to Tamworth in NSW where there’s lots of chicken farms. You will be welcomed with open arms and find life a lot easier. Why keep fighting a fight you won’t win? Council should help these people relocate to a place where they will be loved by not allowing the farm to go ahead. Eddy Crook, Marcus Beach.

Coffe cash-in UNDER the heading “Who benefits?“ (letters 12 November), your correspondent asks how the coffee shop will benefit if the price of a cup of coffee with 15 per cent GST increases from $5 to $6. The short answer is the coffee shop, because it will be making excess profit on each sale. A five per cent increase in GST should increase the cost to the coffee shop by less than 23 cents. Furthermore, to gain approval for an increase in GST, the government would need to

reduce income tax and increase benefits paid to low income persons. Therefore, if businesses are paying a lower rate of income tax, some coffee shops may decide to hold the price of a cup of coffee at $5. J. Wishart, Peregian Beach.

Need for speed SOME writers seem to be concerned about the speed people travel on the road between Cooroy and Tewantin (not the Cooroy-Noosa Road). As far as I am aware, the speed limits are set by the Department of Transport and Main Roads. The RTA is the Residential Tenancies Authority in Queensland! Helping hands A FEW months ago I had a total hip replacement in Brisbane and after four days I was transferred to Eden Hospital in Cooroy for assistance in my recovery. The care at this wonderful facility is professional, caring, committed, holistic, friendly and delivered in an atmosphere of total positivity and with an attitude that adheres to the philosophy of “You can do this". There is no doubt in my mind that my recovery was not only accelerated by being in Eden but also meant I could get back to normal activities much sooner and with great confidence. This is a fantastic medical establishment providing a much-needed service to everyone and especially to we more “mature aged" people. 1 x 150g fresh salmon fillet, diced. 10 whole organic eggs. 2 egg whites. 1 cup almond milk. Himalayan salt and pepper to season. Method: 1. Pre-heat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius. 2. In a bowl combine all pastry ingredients and mix well. 3. Gently knead to form a smooth dough (if it needs a less extra water or extra flour add it as you need). 4. Carefully roll the pastry in between two pieces of baking paper out to a size big enough to cover your tart tin (about 1/2 cm in thickness). 5. Line the tart tin with baking paper and carefully roll the pastry around the rolling pin to make it easy to transfer across. 6. Unroll the pastry from the rolling pin once it is in the right spot over your tart tin. 7. Using your fingers press the pastry evenly into the tart tin and cut off any excess pastry that hangs too far off the edge. 8. For the filling: spread the salmon evenly onto the pastry, arrange the asparagus neatly on the salmon. 9. In a bowl, whisk eggs, egg whites and almond milk together, season and pour into the tart. 10. Bake for about 20 minutes or until egg is cooked and the top is golden. 11. Serve with a wedge of lemon and a side of fresh organic garden salad.

The next Twilight Market will be held on 18 December with a few surprises planned for Christmas. The market will be held in Arcadia Street, on the third Friday of every month, from 5pm to 9pm.

The Movember Foundation is a global men’s health charity raising funds to deliver innovative, breakthrough programs that allow men to live happier, healthier and longer lives. As part of his annual month-long follicle adventure, Michael holds a fund-raising lunch and this year the Stache Bash was held at Gaston Bar Bistro, on Friday 20 November, with over 40 people attending. Through the lunch and other fund-raising activities Michael has already raised over $2500 this year with another week to go. Michael said he wanted to encourage people to continue to donate to Movember as men’s health was something we should all be talking about and supporting. “Like many people, cancer and depression have affected my family and close friends,” he said.

Fish are firing in the river By JACK MANGROVE NOOSA has again turned on the great weather. Saturday and Sunday were a couple of outstanding days to be out on the river - whether it be for fishing or water sports the weather was fantastic. For those with a rod in their hand, Gympie Terrace was a hot place to be, with nice whiting coming from along the terrace - the dog beach and the frying pan were also a hot bite. Most anglers were on by using worms, peeled prawns and the yabbies. Flicking surface lures and small poppers have become more popular when chasing whiting - surface walkers like the Jackson Athlete in the 55mm or the Zerek Paparazzi in the 50mm size are perfect for the job. Down around Woods Bays, the trevally have been epic with some real quality fish among them, giant trevally and tea leaf trevally have been

smashing baitfish on the surface. An early morning fish with the high tide should see a result. For those up for a night fish, mangrove jack have been hanging around structures like the Tewantin Boat Harbour and the pontoon around the Noosa sound, but getting your lure in close is essential. Live bait has also been an excellent way to target jack. Flathead are still in good numbers throughout the river with the bigger models down towards the mouth. Offshore, the pelagics are starting to make their way south, small school mackerel, spotted mackerel and wahoo have all been taken over the last week. North Reef has produced some quality fish with jew, snapper and trout on the chew. Probably one of the outstanding fish to be caught in numbers has been Mahi Mahi or dolphin fish. These fish are

great fun to catch and outstanding on the barbecue. Chardons has also been firing with quality reef fish and some smaller black marlin chasing teasers. Sweetlip, pan-sized squire and smaller mack tuna have also come from Sunshine Reef. On the beach, the Noosa Northshore has been producing - flathead have been in good numbers and have been a great by-catch for anglers targeting tailor as they make their way back from framer after spawning. Good schools of whiting have been inhabiting the gutters with most fish in close on the high tide. Hitting the beach on the low tide and collecting some beach worms and then fishing the tide in has seen some bag limit catches of whiting over the last couple of weeks. So on behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures.

It just gets better in pool By ALASDAIR SCOTT AS head coach, me and my wife Sam may only have been in charge of the Eumundi Swim Squad for just over a month, but we are already busy building on well-laid foundations a strong and teambased program. Super squad swimmers have already been seeing the benefits of coaching, with personal bests aplenty in recent carnivals and several qualifying for the State Championships in December, including Troy Carlson, Caitlin Walker, Lachlan Constable and Tenaya Carmont. A definite entry in the club’s 'highlights of the year' reel will be

Elise Forward’s win against World Championship swimmer Jake Packard at the recent Gympie carnival. In an exhibition event, Jake swam breaststroke but was pipped at the wall by Elise. Swim club on Thursday nights have been particularly enjoyed by the younger swimmers, with several new families joining up and enjoying the fun and friendly atmosphere each week. Individual achievements, like 8-year-old Ally Broderick’s debut 100m individual medley are celebrated. Top tiger Sam leads from the front FOLLOWING a hard-fought 2015 season the Noosa Tigers welcome new coach Sam Faure to the fold as they prepare to take out the 2016 premiership. After coming so close over the past two seasons, the Tigers are determined the 2016 season will be their year and are proud to welcome Faure to the team. Hailing from country Victoria, Faure played his first senior game at just 15 before going on to play for North Ballarat in the VFL. After moving to Queensland in 2009, Faure played 130 games for Morningside before making the decision to move to the Sunshine Coast and take on the role of coach

for Noosa’s beloved Tigers. Faure has described moving to Noosa as “coming home” and at just 27, he hopes to play and coach at the same time with his trademark enthusiasm. Faure said he likes to play as well as coach because he can better direct the team while on the field as he can pick up things he might miss while on the side line. Training for the pre-season will kick off on Saturday 21 November at the Tigers’ home ground, Weyba Road, Noosaville, followed by a meet and greet with the new coach, players and sponsors over a barbecue.

Butterfies get a welcome back-up THE Sunshine Coast Business Associates Charity Golf Day had a fitting sequel this week when organisers handed over a cheque for $15,000 to charity Sunshine Butterflies. Noosa Springs Golf Course was the venue of choice for corporate golf enthusiasts to swing to their hearts content at an event hosted by major sponsor ‘White House Celebrations’. Making a stylish entrance by helicopter was popular drawcard, Olympian speed skater, Steven Bradbury. The Miami Vice themed day with novelty and decorative sponsored holes, attracted over 100 players. Hot 91.1 announcer Sam Coward kept everyone on their

toes as he drove around the course finding reasons to fine players all in the name of charity. Not only were the auctions well supported with the assistance of Justin Vievers who had everyone digging deep; Sunshine Butterflies member, Shane Hicks, who has Down Syndrome, delivered an honest and heart-warming speech thanking players. NO offence to any old-timer readers I might have out there, but now that I’m seriously late-middle-aged myself, I sometimes find that after spending time with elderly folk I come away feeling exhausted and, well, just a little depressed. Together with filmer Shaun Cairns and former pro surfer Mark Warren, I’ve just spent an entire week in the company of men ranging in age from 75 to 90, and guess what? I feel exhilarated and inspired by the experience! What amazing lives these old blokes have led, and what reserves of energy they still have left! We’ve been filming a TV documentary about the pioneers of the Australian surfboard industry, the men who set up factories on an old market garden at Brookvale, behind Sydney’s northern beaches, in the postwar years and built a tiny cottage industry into a surfboard boom that changed our beach culture forever. The grand old men of the industry are Gordon Woods, 90, and our own Billy Wallace, 89. We’ll catch up with Bill on home turf in the coming days, but the remarkable Mr Woods seemed like a good place to start. Gordon’s not as nimble as he once was since having a stroke, but after a three-hour interview in his penthouse apartment overlooking the Sydney Heads, he thought we needed to visit his man-cave where he keeps the first finned surfboard made in Australia, back in December 1956. Keeping up with Gordon as he flashed through the back streets in his sporty car with personalised plates was not easy, but we made it to the cave in one piece, and he unveiled the hollow ply “okanui”, still in immaculate condition. As we filmed him with the board, I suddenly realised that Gordon was buggered. “Do you need a breather, old

mate?” I asked. “Perfectly fine,” he snapped, and continued posing with undisguised pride with his creation, the board that started it all nearly 60 years ago. That board was a copy of a red balsa board that Gordon had seen ridden at Manly by American lifeguard Bob Burnside, in Australia for an international surf carnival held in conjunction with the Melbourne Olympics. He’d been amazed by the way Burnside had turned the shorter (only 10 feet) and lightweight board with a big D-shaped fin across the wave and ridden diagonally to shore as he walked up and down the deck. Gordon drove to the Games in Melbourne, then on to Torquay, where he extracted a promise from Burnside that he would sell him the board before leaving the country. That board became the template for the entire Australian surfboard industry. If Gordon Woods was the man who kick-started the industry, Barry Bennett was the engine that kept it running. When we caught up with Barry, now 84, at 7am on a warm morning that would reach 40-plus by lunch-time, he’d already been at work for two hours, supervising the first of the day’s two production shifts at Dion Chemicals, where about 200 foam blanks - the core of most surfboards - are popped out of ancient concrete moulds each day, supplying not only the Australian market but about a dozen export markets as well. When foam began to replace balsa as the preferred surfboard core in the late 1950s, most of the Brookvale board builders “blew” their own, with their eyes stinging from the weird and wonderfully toxic plastic mixes they poured into home-made moulds. But by the time the surf boom kicked in around 1962, Barry Bennett was the king of blanks, supplying them all. He still is. A quiet, reserved man, Barry rarely gives interviews, but he seemed to enjoy recalling the old days, when he would strap his 16-foot toothpick

Surfing has been exceptionally good to Bennett, but the flip-side of that is that many board shops would have gone under, were it not for the generosity of the “bank of Barry”. He is an institution in Brookvale, but admits that there is a bit of family pressure on him to slow down now. “Maybe next year,” he grins, flicking some foam dust from his hair.

Nippers shine at carnival By DEAN SMALLMAN LAST weekend the Sunshine Beach Nipper crew headed south to Met Caloundra for the Annual Nipper Teams Carnival. This carnival is one of the few times our Nippers get to undertake team-only events and boy do they like it. On Saturday the U14 and U15s

enjoyed fantastic Sunshine Coast conditions with a light off-shore breeze and no swell making for poollike conditions. While the Sunshine crew would have loved more challenging conditions, it was certainly great for spectators as for once it was easy to see competitors as they tussled for positions across swim teams, board

relays, cameron (swim, run, board, run), board rescue and beach relays. With Sunshine’s U14 and U15 teams being arguably the best on the coast, it was going to be a great day with loads of awesome results secured. Special mention needs to go to the U15 boys Maverick Pettigrove, Spud Brewer, Tom O’Connor and Jonte Redwood.

On Sunday, thirty-six U11 and U13 Nippers enjoyed less favourable conditions with a little drizzle followed by a blazing sun and crossshore winds making life interesting. The best of the great results were the U12 girls second in swim team, third in board team, second and third in board rescue. The U13 girls also had a great

day with third in swim team, third in cameron relay while the U13 boys cleaned up with second in surf teams, third in board rescue and second in board relay. The next carnival is at Maroochydore on 5 December so the hard work continues as the team builds to Branch, State and Aussie titles early next year.

Codes’ big night of boxing action By RON LANE THE Contender of the Codes charity boxing night was a huge success with a crowd of over 450 packed into the Noosa Leisure Centre on Saturday night. Add to this contestants from all codes from AFL to NRL and even a lifeguard willing to hop into the ring and give their all. The promotion was under the control of Damien “Butch” Smith and the bouts were supervised by highly respected local boxing coach, Israel Kani, a combination that

was indeed a winning team. This is the fourth year it has been staged, and for those who missed it, be sure to put it on your charity support calendar for next year. Ringside tables were full and tickets were sold at the door with seating and standing room available. At one stage between bouts, sporting memorabilia was auctioned and many items went for several hundred dollars each with a couple tipped over the $1000 mark. For the main bout of the evening, it was

pure Las Vegas - in the words of emcee Julian Pitt we were told, “Let’s get ready to rumble!”. The bout was between former coach of Pirates Rugby League Liam Anlezark and Luke Shreder of the Lions AFL team. Entering the ring to the Rocky theme, Eye of the Tiger, contestants were introduced to the crowd and at the ringing of the bell it was on for young and old; three rounds refereed by Israel Kani with neither boxer taking a backward step. DESPITE being lead-up time to the Christmas holiday period, a time that is normally quiet, big crowds are still being reported by our beach patrols big crowds but no incidents. It is that time of the year when Noosa once again plays host to visiting students from America. Under the patronage of a group known as Rustic Pathways these 12 young people who come from all parts of the US spend a week as guests of the Noosa club. Program leader Allison Kuney (aged 31) said: “Our people are noosa.starcommunity.com.au

mainly gap year students and we organise these groups every year. Their ages are from 18 to 20, and on returning home most will be going to college. It is a great learning experience. We have just spent six weeks in the Fiji Islands also three weeks in New Zealand and when we can, we involve ourselves in different programs that can sometimes be of assistance to the community. That was one of the things that we undertook while in Fiji.” In Noosa they are undergoing a basic training program supervised by Noosa education manager Greg McLaughlin; Surf Rescue Certificate - Certificate 2 in Public Safety. One of their first requirements was the compulsory 400m time swim at the NAC. Then it was back to the beach for surf training.

One student was Lexa Trokopetz 18. “I come from Boston and when I return I will be going to uni to study business administration. This life saving has really been a great experience; coming from Boston we don’t have anything like it.” All agreed that one of the really good things during their five-week stay in Australia was the chance to learn all aspects of our Australian water skills. We wish them well. In the competitive world it is time for the big boys and girls to start flexing their muscles. This Saturday and Sunday, Coolum Beach will play host to rounds one and two of the Nutri Grain Iron Man Series. For Noosa, Jordan Mercer, Jack Moyes and Kirsty Higgison will represent and we wish them all the very best.

Last weekend, Noosa and Sunshine Beach had members competing at the Surf carnival at Alexandra Headlands. Noosa director of surf sports Peter French said: “We are happy with the overall performance of our team. It was a carnival for the under-17 and opens; with windy choppy conditions. One point that we were pleased with; in the under-17s we won both the male and female Taplin Relays”. This has always been considered to be a major blue ribbon event as it includes the three main disciplines of swim, ski and board. By winning this event it shows that the club has great depth right across the board; also it gives a good indication that the club coaching staff must be doing a lot of things right. For Sunshine Beach, coach Clint

Irwin said: “We took things a bit quite at Alex. It was early in the season for us; still a long way to the national titles. At present we are just weighing things up and setting our goals”. On Sunday afternoon, in keeping with the surf club policy of helping our young local artists, patrons to the Noosa club were entertained by a variety of singers plus two bands from the Gympie ROCKSKOOL. Working under the umbrella of the Australian Institute of Country Music these young artists are performing to raise the funds necessary to pay their way to the Tamworth Country Music Festival. Young artists with a load of talent. We wish them well.
