gun, with Gary Adcock confirmed as returning officer, however some in the community are still concerned about what happened in the last election. In the 2012 Southern Downs local government elections, there was close to 5000 ‘missing’ votes in the SDRC mayoral elections and con-

AFTER continued delays, seniors, social groups and sporting clubs can finally celebrate after the Southern Downs Regional Council rescinded their controversial lease fees in favour of a flat-rate fee at Wednesday's general meeting. Three different solutions were tabled over the previous two general council meetings but it was a simple motion put forth by councillor Jamie Mackenzie that ended the debate. The new policy proposed to adopt a flat annual lease fee of

It took two deferred decisions over three meetings and continued debate since the decision was introduced earlier this year to make a final decision. Full public galleries had accompanied recent meetings with many seniors storming out in audible anger in September as a decision was again deferred. The community lease policy was adopted in April 2015 with a substantial rise and it was met with backlash in the community and specifically from senior cit-
izens. The decision saw fees for community groups and sporting organisations rise to $750 annually for five-year leases and $600 annually for 10-year leases. Multiple councillors aired their concerns on the burden that would be placed on sporting clubs if membership fees were to be introduced. Cr Jamie Mackenzie has been an outspoken critic of the rises throughout the meetings. After months of deliberation the final decision was made quickly with no councillors opposing the new policy.

THE Southern Downs has welcomed 21 new Australian citizens into the community. Time was taken out from the council general meeting for the ceremony to introduce the new citizens and present their certificates. A wide range of countries and cultures were represented including Brazil, India, Nepal, Netherlands, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore and South Africa. Mayor Peter Blundell officially welcomed the citizens with the certificate and an Australian native plant as a welcome gift. “We hope the plants take pride of place in the gardens

Mayor Blundell said he expected the 2016 elections to run smoothly. “Having said that, I still believe that postal voting is the appropriate way to conduct the 2016 local government elections and am very happy we have been given the ability to conduct them in this way.” The Queensland Local Government Elections will be held on 19 March next year.

Bike network for Downs A CYCLE network could be coming to the Southern Downs as part of an initiative from the Queensland Department of Main Roads. The Principal Cycle Network Plan would connect Stanthorpe and Warwick and would create an alternative travel network for the community with the aim of getting cyclists off main roads. The Southern Downs Regional Council will suggest to the State Government to open the discussion to the community before anything is made final. “Through the program, the Department of Transport and Main Roads and the council will be able to work together to deliver a safe, highquality and connected regional cycle network which will encourage more people to cycle, more often,” a State Government letter said.
Library fees cut FOLLOWING a poor response from the community, library fees and charges have been cut following a council decision. There were 26 cancellations for meeting rooms following the previous rise and numbers of inter-library loans reduced drastically. The $5 inter-library loan fee will be cut to $2 and the meeting room fee for community groups will be cut from $10 to $5.

SDRC has expressed an interest in having a Regional Water Supply Security Assessment (RWSSA) done for Stanthorpe. The study provides an overview of the state of water supply in regional Queensland areas.

Waste station closure THE Northern Granite Belt Waste Transfer Station is set to open in mid-December this year. As a result council has resolved to close the existing Thulimbah Waste Transfer Station from 1 February next year. Council mentioned the close proximity of the two stations, a reduction in costs and the continued reports of incidents at the Thulimbah station as reasons for its closure.

Plan for poll FOLLOWING some recent speculation surrounding who would be next year’s election returning officer, Southern Downs Regional Council has received confirmation from the Electoral Commission of Queensland (ECQ) on who would take the role. Gary Adcock has been confirmed to take the position he held in the 2012 local government council elections. “Council has received formal notification from the ECQ that Mr Gary Adcock has been appointed the returning officer for Southern Downs Regional Council,” a spokesperson said. In brief Palace Hotel closed THE Palace Hotel in Warwick has unexpectedly closed its doors. There was no public warning from owners that the hotel would be closing, with a big Halloween night on Saturday serving as a the only send-off for the iconic local pub. The move comes as a surprise given that Southern Downs Regional Council had recently approved a two-storey, 33-room hotel adjoining the Palace Hotel and bottle shop. The development is now up in the air with management declining to comment on the future of the pub. Some staff members are now without jobs with the hotel to remain closed for the foreseeable future.
By DANE LILLINGSTONE FOR all the speculation on the future of Jumpers and Jazz, one meeting has proved that the Southern Downs community will come together when required. A Jumpers and Jazz community meeting was held this week at Warwick Town Hall with a variety of opinions and emotions on display. The meeting acted as a catharsis of sorts for the community but it was also held with the intention of getting people involved in starting the planning and running of Jumpers and Jazz in 2016. There were over 80 people in attendance including the staff of Destination Southern Downs (DSD), staff of the Warwick Art Gallery, deputy mayor Ross Bartley, councillors Vic Pennisi, Jamie Mackenzie, Neil Meiklejohn and Jo McNally, various community groups who are involved with the festival and residents who were concerned for its future. The transition to a singular tourism body has been anything but smooth but as implementation project manager Tracy Dobie pointed out, it is a transition phase and growing pains were always going to be felt. “We are here to strategically support events. We have no allocation in our budget to run events,” Ms Dobie said. “Jumpers and Jazz has been put on (in the past) with a relatively low budget and a small number of people.” Ms Dobie said that an eco-

There were 158 events at Jumpers and Jazz this year with the majority privately run by clubs and community groups. The sentiment in the crowd was that almost everyone was willing to continue supporting the events but didn’t know how the new tourism board would work. DSD handed out a list of 23 events that needed co-ordination and invited the community to nominate what events they wanted to run. For the 2016 festival there will be an independent management board made up of five members who will oversee the festival with the chair of the board acting as the main organiser. There will also be a specialist events manager employed for 10 weeks in the leadup and during the festival.
At question time some vented anger and frustration at DSD and the council. “Why did council get rid of Warwick Tourism and Events when Warwick only has events?” a man said. “Without this, our community will not prosper. Isn’t it council’s responsibility to ensure the community prospers?” one lady said. Some feedback was positive. “We will go forward and continue to support it as a group,” one man said. Perhaps it was summed up best when the council was asked to have a say and Cr Bartley stepped up. “Jumpers and Jazz is the event that council can’t afford to fund but the community can’t afford to lose,” he said. It was met with the biggest round of applause of the night.

Attempted break-in ON Sunday night there was an attempted break-in at a house on Gilbert Crescent, Warwick. An unknown suspect tried to enter the dwelling sometime between Sunday night and Monday morning. WHEN the Stanthorpe TAFE was “sold”, someone didn’t check the contract that was signed. Between deciding to sell and the “sale”, the water previously available at the TAFE site was sold off, but not removed from the contract. Of course the berry farm needs water. Royalties from the regions and the ratepayers are in the situation now of having to fund the building of a pipeline to supply the water at a ratio of 2:1 on an approximately $680,000 project. To boot the TAFE was sold at a loss, as I pointed out in an earlier letter. Who was responsible for such a diabolical error? And who is going to pay for the water? The buck must stop somewhere. THE reports on the address in London by former Prime Minister Tony Abbott highlights the man’s fixation with his views of his own importance in world affairs. What an over-rated failed Prime Minister has to offer by way of possible solutions to perceived world problems is, at best, open to conjecture. Advice from anyone who has significantly failed in a chosen walk of life, is not something to be recommended. Abbott’s obsession with the movement of migrants will not gain him any real friends. Very recently a friend came across a frightening example of the modern real estate activities that was totally unknown to me. There were photos of my home, even down to the pot plants emanating from a website based in Beijing! Apparently useful for foreign buyers of Australian real estate! My friend agreed that it had to be of great concern to me and assisted me to have it withdrawn. This letter is to warn others that even without a home computer, life is no longer safe with greedy eyes from worlds away wanting your property. SENATOR Fiona Nash is treading where other politicians fear to tread. She has said that property owners should have the legal right to deny coal seam gas companies access to their land. This is something that property owners have wanted for a long time. However, their wishes have been denied, because it’s not in the interest of the state to allow this kind of freedom. The state is happy to allow property to be privately owned, reap the taxes, and control the use of that property either for the state’s interest or that of multinational corporations. Will someone please explain to Senator Nash that Australia, with regards to property, is actually a fascist country? Unlike the former Soviet Union where property was owned by the state, Australians are allowed to own property but its use is strictly controlled and more controls are probably on the way. The Western Downs farmer who recently took his life because of his failed 10-year battle with the coal seam gas mafia has put property rights squarely on the agenda.
What a fuss AS AN older Australian it really makes me sad to see how much fuss people are making about halal. How many of them even know what halal in America is really about? Treasured Joy By DANE LILLINGSTONE THE Stanthorpe Regional Art Gallery has welcomed two new exhibitions. On Friday night the official opening was held for the photography-based ‘Treasures Past’ from Stanthorpe photographer Sandra McEwan and Helen Turrisi, and ‘The Joy of Clay’ from the Stanthorpe Pottery Club. All 14 artists currently on display are from Stanthorpe. A big turnout was on hand to get a first look of the new exhibitions while James Blundell belted out some tunes for the entertainment. Gallery manager Nicola Holly said local community support for the gallery was always strong. “Whenever we have a local artist exhibition the turnout is always tremendous,” she said. “People in Stanthorpe are

The exhibition consists of more than 50 exquisite watercolours including four 19thcentury works by renowned watercolour artist Conrad Martens inspired by his time spent journeying from station to station on horseback across the Darling Downs in the early 1850s,” Nicola said.

Backpackers welcomed, caution sounded SOUTHERN Downs Regional Council has held its first welcoming session for backpackers. On Friday at the Stanthorpe Civic Centre, councillors, Stanthorpe police and local businesses all took part in an information session and welcoming for new seasonal workers. Mayor Peter Blundell gave the official welcoming speech. “We realise how important it is having you in our community,” he said.
Dan O’Dea from Stanthorpe police station warned the new arrivals to take care on the roads. “There will be three to four thousand extra people in Stanthorpe over the summer months,” he said. “Backpackers represent a lot of our local crashes.” Representatives from NAB Bank, Grove Juice and Rugby Farm were all present and there was also a free sausage sizzle. Rugby Farm Liaison officer
and Stanthorpe local Tane Gravatt said backpackers played an important role in the running of the local business. “They are the most important labour source to us,” he said. “We have many jobs that require skills in terms of harvesting, but not everything can be mechanically harvested, they need to be cut by hand and indeed in many cases need to be graded and packed by the cutter. “We do need the man power.”

“The money raised will go to new and upgraded equipment.� In the auction, the big seller was the kilo of cherries that went to one bidder for $100. Young and old guns By DANE LILLINGSTONE THE Rising Sun Shield Gun Shoot ‘Young Diggers vs Old Diggers’ event was held over the weekend at the Warwick Clay Target Club. The annual event is a chance for current and former members of the defence forces to get together and blow off a little steam. The event is sponsored and run by the Warwick Warriors Woodcutters. This year current Army Reserve members of Alpha Company 25 from Warwick, Dalby and Brisbane joined the Woodcutters in their annual shoot. Running since 2010, Woodcutters member Johno Felton said it was an opportunity for people with military background to get together and socialise. “We compete for a shield for ex-diggers and serving diggers,� he said. “We do it every year. It’s just a fun day out.� The Warwick Clay Target Club is 133 years old, with the current club located in the same spot since 1950.
President Michael Loy said anyone could come and have a shoot. “We’re very family orientated here, we have quite a few families come and shoot together,� he said. “We want lots of juniors to come, without juniors we don’t have a future.� Michael had some simple advice for new shooters. “To shoot at the target a lot of people think too much into it. You’ve got to follow through on your target, you don’t just stop and shoot, as the target comes out and you follow the target up and as soon as you see it, you shoot,� he said. “It’s the sort of sport where it’s you against the target.� The club has a competition day once a month and a social day every Thursday. “Every Thursday is a social day, anyone can come out after lunch on Thursday for $7 a round. You have to buy bullets but all equipment’s already here,� Michael said. “If you want to come down, come down anytime.�

HALLOWEEN has come and gone for another year in Warwick but a ‘Night of Horrors’ may be here to stay. The first event in Warwick, held jointly at the Warwick Showgrounds and the Warwick Video Ezy, has been a success. Among the activities on offer were two horror mazes, laser skirmish, bungie run, jumping castle and a horror film screening. There was also a world-renowned magician performing at Warwick Video Ezy and trick or treating at the store. Organiser Jeff Clark said the event was a chance to bring the whole community together for Halloween. “There was a lot of little things here and there but there was nothing where everyone could come along and do the same thing for Halloween,” he said. “It was well supported from the community and over 150 went through each of the two mazes. “People were lined up the whole night, anymore and we would have struggled to put them all through.” There are now plans for it to be an annual event but due to a clash with the rodeo next year, Jeff is planning on having it on Friday 13 May. “We’d like to introduce an extra maze, a cannibal clown maze, and look at doing a stage performance with magicians, rocky horror picture show actors, dance shows and fire breathers,” he said. “I haven’t had anyone saying they didn’t enjoy it. “We’ll certainly look at puting it on again and trying to double the attendance next year.”

WITH horse breeding well and truly underway now that the Gold Cup is over, at Killarney Vets they are striving to turn follicles into embryos for their clients. Veterinarian Ellie McKenna said they knew the exciting nature of breeding outside the local gene pool could be daunting for some horse owners so they had put together some facts to consider. “Fresh semen is used widely and does come with the best conception rates but as fresh semen can only be used if the mare is on farm with the stallion, this opportunity is not available to all, so chilled or frozen semen is widely used to overcome the tyranny of distance,” Dr McKenna said. Dr McKenna reported the conception rate to be only 30-56 per cent semen, so in budgeting terms the Killarney Vets recommend their clients allow three mare cycles before a pregnancy may be achieved. “This is a technique that carries the most excitement as to the prospective progeny but also carries the most heartache as there is usually more costs involved and reduced chance of a pregnancy,” she said. BUDDING builders have been warned to steer clear of dodgy online courses in a bid to avoid faulty building work. Master Builders training and licensing manager Adam Profke said in recent years there had been a proliferation of cheap, fast online courses which threatened the reputation of the industry’s quality builders. “Cheaper and quicker is not always better,” Mr Profke said. “The fundamental issue is

Lynne saw the need and opportunity for local not-for-profit committees to gain funds from all events that are run in Woodenbong rather than relying on just their own groups individual
fund-raising opportunities. So after getting four local committees in agreement the 'Woodenbong Community Coffee Group' was formed. Sharing the cost of an automatic modern espresso machine, they were ready to serve. The setup is variable to suit every occasion and manned by local volunteers associated with the groups. Woodenbong’s Border
Ranges Riding Club Inc., RSL Womens Auxiliary Woodenbong Branch, Rodeo/Campdraft Ladies Auxiliary and Progress Association now benefit from the sale of coffee at events where up until now the profits used to go out of the village. Their latest venture was at the Woodenbong Trail Ride event at the weekend where a great job was done by the wonderful volunteers on duty.

The time of first contact By ROBERT MACMAURICE PROBABLY the first European person to meet a Kambuwal person (Gambuwal and other variations of spelling are also documented) was Allan Cunningham on 13 June 1827. He described it in his journal in the following way: “Although very recent traces of natives were remarked in different parts of the vale, in which we remained encamped about a week, only a solitary Aborigine (a man of ordinary stature) was seen, who in wandering forth from his retreat in quest of food chanced to pass the tents. Immediately however, upon an attempt of one of my people to approach him, he retired in great alarm to the adjacent brushes, at the foot of the boundary hills, and instantly disappeared. It therefore seems probable that he had not previously seen white men, and possibly might never have had any communication with the natives inhabiting the country on the eastern side of the Dividing range, from whom he could have acquired such information of the existence of a body of white strangers on the banks of the Brisbane, and their friendly dispositions toward his countrymen as might have induced him to have met with confidence our overtures to effect an amicable communication…”. That person would have been a Kambuwal tribal member. What he reported to others would also have been interesting for the historical record. The Kambuwal people lived in an area of 9600 square kilometres, from Bonshaw, Inglewood, Millmerran, Leyburn, east of Stanthorpe, the western slopes of the Great Dividing ranges, and Tenterfield. The Kambuwal people were surrounded by other peoples including the Jukambul, Ngarabal, Kwiambal, Bigambul, Giabel, Keinjen, and Kitabal. Crossing the borders of tribal lands, without permission, could lead to punishment of the infringer. Allan Cunningham and his party of six men and 11 horses, in all innocence, had to cross many tribal boundaries in his 1827 journey from Sydney to his discovery of the Dar-
ling Downs and back. During the 14-week journey he only observed Aborigines on five occasions. Perhaps the strangeness of these white people held the landowners back. It was Allan Cunningham’s discoveries that led to many other people arriving on the Darling Downs eager to claim land. The fact that Aboriginal people had lived in this land for thousands of years was of no concern to them. In early 1840, Patrick Leslie and a convict companion known as Murphy, were possibly the second Europeans to be sighted by the Kambuwal people, when they traversed a number of tribal lands. Patrick Leslie followed the same western pathway from Sydney, as did Allan Cunningham, and then criss-crossed the Southern Downs area looking for his ideal piece of land. The land that he took up was to become known as Toolburra Station and Canning Downs Station, which he stocked with sheep in late 1840, and later he acquired Goomburra Station in 1847. This was the land of the Keinjin people. Patrick Leslie was noted as a “hard” man and he did not have good relations with the local Aborigines. On one occasion he was attacked by Kambuwal people, who wished to murder him, but ironically was saved by some Keinjin people who were working as stockmen on his property. The reason for the Kambuwal attack was that a number of Kambuwal women had been raped by one of Patrick Leslie’s workers. The next European that encountered the Kambuwal people was Matthew Henry Marsh and his three companions who came up from Sydney through the New England plateau. They camped at the present site of Maryland Station on 17 January 1842. In exploring the area around The Summit through to present-day Stanthorpe they became aware of about 500 Aboriginals in the area. These Aboriginals would have been Kambuwal people. In daylight they recognised their mistake and as a result named the place Funker’s Gap, which is still the place name today. Funk being an old-fashioned term meaning panic or to be terrified. Fear was probably the main emotion that Europeans experienced with Kambuwal people and other Aborigines. This fear led to atrocities, but for every European who died many more Aboriginals died in revenge. Some estimates put the number of Kambuwal people at around 1500 at the time of European invasion. These numbers appear to have rapidly declined, as occurred in other tribes as well, with the presence of Europeans. In the 1850s for instance, at the Golden Fleece Tavern, which was located where the township of Stanthorpe is now, there were reports of regular encampments of about 300 Kambuwal people on Quart Pot Creek. By the time of tin discovery and the formation of Stanthorpe in 1872, this was no longer the case. In 1874 the then 14-year-old George Bamberry, who lived at Wy-
lie Creek, discovered a Bora ring about two kilometres east of Ruby Creek. It was apparently last used by the Kambuwal people about 1873. Other Bora rings exist in the region. About 100 Kambuwal words and a few expressions were recorded by Mrs Harriott Barlow during the 1850s and 1860s. “Wallangarra” meaning, long water hole and “Yandilla” a small town to the east of Millmerran, meaning running water, are two examples of surviving Kambuwal language. Other surviving traces of the Kambuwal people include stone implements and particular sites known to have been significant to them. Kambuwal people were relocated as far away as missions on Fraser Island, and perhaps Cherbourg and Deebing Creek Mission (near Ipswich), with the break-up of their social and cultural living patterns. How many descendants are there today? Beyond this the Kambuwal people and their knowledge and customs appear to have disappeared. Lost because of fear and the insatiable pursuit of land and fortune that the first Europeans saw in this land of opportunity.

A WEEK of fierce Trans-Tasman rivalry culminates with the first test at the Gabba. The Aussies have their hands on the Constellation Cup and the Melbourne Cup while the Kiwis dominated in the Rugby World Cup and the William Webb Ellis cup is heading back to the land of the long white cloud. There were plenty of lights on around the country at 2am on Sunday morning as rugby fans settled in to watch the game. The Kiwis once again proved they are the best in the business but the Wallabies were far from disgraced and showed they are narrowing the gap between the sides. Now, it is time for your new look cricket side to stand up. Australia’s win loss ratio at the Gabba is outstanding, so cricket fans (this one included) are expecting big things from this side. Gabba curator Kevin Mitchell has promised his pitch will once again deliver the same mix of pace and bounce that fast bowlers have come to love the Gabba Test pitches. Mitchell is predicting the first session on day one will be typically testing for the side that bats first, so it is expected that the outcome of the toss will be vital. New Zealand’s fast bowlers have been plotting the demise of the Aussie batting kings Steve Smith and David Warner but Australia despite a raft of retirements still looks a far more formidable unit. It should come as no surprise that I will be front and centre at the Gabba for the opening overs on day one. I am hoping to see some great batting from our own thoroughbred batsmen and cannot wait to see our quicks slice through the Kiwi line-up. - Casey DOUBLE TONS RECENTLY Pommie captain Alistair Cook caused a bit of a storm when he scored a double ton in a test against Pakistan in Abu Dhabi. The skipper batted for 836 minutes to guide England to 569-8 at close of play on the fourth day of the test. Even on a docile pitch, it takes plenty of resolve to occupy the crease for that length of time. He finally played a tired looking sweep off spinner Shoaib Malik and was caught at backward square-leg by Shan Masood, ending his 528-ball knock which had 18 boundaries. Big scores are not just the domain of top class international players. I was recently reminded by

Enid Hamilton, resident historian of all things Stanthorpe, of a remarkable innings played by a couple of local lads in a game between Dalveen and Amiens back in the 30s. The pair backed up the following weekend to face the Dalveen attack and took the score to 0/463 before the Amiens captain declared. Batterham was not out 179 and at the other end Walker was 236. Although unable to claim this as a first class record at the time, the Queensland Cricket Association conceded that it constituted a Queensland country cricket record and the figures were sent to Wisden for publication in the official records. Proving that he was no slouch with the ball, Batterham a few weeks later took six wickets in a match. CUP ONE FOR THE AGES MICHELLE Payne, Darren Weir and Price of Penzance ensured that the overseas marauders will leave our shores empty-handed after an historic Melbourne Cup last Tuesday. Jockey Michelle Payne became the first female jockey to win the nation’s greatest race, and in doing so she has not cracked racing’s glass ceiling she shattered it. tribe, Michelle has battled serious injury and more importantly those who believe that females are not as capable as their male counterparts. She did not miss them in her speech at the Cup presentation. This is a woman who truly does have racing in her blood. She is the youngest daughter of former jockey and battler Paddy Payne who raised his large family after their mother was killed in a car accident. Racing Victoria should be indebted to Payne senior - eight of his brood became jockeys surely a record that is not likely to be bettered. Patrick and Andrew, Brigid (deceased), Therese, Maree, Bernadette, Cathy and Michelle have enjoyed their share of success in the saddle. Thirty-year- old Michelle who is married to Hong Kong-based jockey Brett Prebble is the only one still riding, but the Payne girls had already done a great deal in paving the way for women in the male-dominated industry before Michelle’s historic win on Tuesday. It has not been an easy ride for Michelle who has overcome serious injuries in horrendous falls. In 2004 at Sandown, she fractured her skull and needed several months to recover from brain damage that affected her balance and ability to think. Her brother Andrew said, “She lost her nerve for a while and she worked hard to get it back”. “She had another fall not long after that, coming off head-first in one of the worst-looking falls, but thankfully she wasn’t hurt.” Legendary trainer Bart Cummings certainly believed in her ability and gave her career a boost in 2009 when he gave her the ride on Allez Wonder in the Group One Toorak handicap. She took the opportunity with both hands repaying Bart’s faith and winning her first Group I race. The Cups king kept the faith giving her the ride on the horse in the Caulfield Cup, but they finished unplaced. The Melbourne Cup, which she dreamed of winning as a schoolgirl seemed out of reach. When Michelle broke ribs and vertebrae in a 2012 fall, she told her family it looked like her riding career was over. She was taken aback when her father told her not to rush into a decision and just take her time. It was the opposite of what she expected from him. It has turned out to be sage advice from Payne senior. After the win on Tuesday, her brother Andrew explained she outlined all the reasons why her mount could win the race and how she planned to ride Prince of Penzance. History will show that
the race panned out exactly as she had imagined. Payne rode Prince of Penzance as a threeyear-old and labelled him a potential Melbourne Cup horse then. Last year, she won the Moonee Valley Cup on him and was second in that race again two weeks ago. Rides have been hard to come by for this gutsy young lady and she has been considering retirement - let’s hope not, but if she does decide to hang up her saddle and follow brothers Patrick and Andrew to pursue a career as a trainer, she has left an indelible mark on Australian racing. YOUNG GUNS TOO GOOD THE big M& D sponsored Two Ball Ambrose event last Saturday in Stanthorpe again proved popular with local players and visitors. Young guns, Dylan Barraclough and Hannah Reeves, teamed up to return a score of 11 under par to win the day. They were five under on the front nine and came home six under for their total. In second place was the team of Michael Grubic and Hayden Smith, who managed to slip under the handicapper’s radar to return a nett score of 63. Lorraine Evans and Christine Welstead were successful in the all-ladies section, returning the best score of nett 72.5 for their easy win. Richard Reardon collected the pin at 3/12 and Jason Bacon held onto the pin at 17. Rachael Hendry collected the ladies’ pin at 3/12 as well as the approach at 17. Johnny Spiller can still hit a good ball, winning the pro-pin at 1/10 and was on for longest drive until beaten by Mark Hendry. Dylan Barraclough held the pro-pin at 5/14 and Grant Howard took 9/18 and the birdies best at nine. Hannah Reeves hit the longest drive for the ladies. In the run down, J. Bacon and G. Clark and Fred Wharton and Richard Reardon each went home with a prize. Special NAGA award to A. Clark and A. Quirk for their score of 98 not out. Ian Harvey was successful in taking the major prize in the raffle and was last seen working hard on the carpet. Thanks to Judy Spiller for her work in making the day a success and it was great to see both Mick and Johnny Spiller on the course. Next Saturday is the November monthly medal. The sponsors are Howard and Adele Poole. The Medal of Medallists for both men and ladies will also be decided. Qualifiers include those players who have won a monthly medal in the last 12 months. The men will be playing for the Roy Carnell Memorial trophy sponsored by the Carnell family. The sponsor in the ladies event is local business house, Lifestyle Footwear. SUMMIT SUCCESSES THE Apple Blossom Carnival might be done and dusted but competitive bowls was still on the agenda for Summit Bowlers last weekend. The team of Rob Capelli, Eliseo Zamprogno, Ray Spiller and Phil Davis played outstanding bowls to take out the Tannymorel’s Fours Carnival. The group showed played outstanding bowls continuing the winning run of local players. Another foursome keenly travelled to Salisbury in Brisbane for the weekend and while they won through to the first division rounds on Sunday, they were not as successful as last year. Len Covill, Paul Zamprogno Rod Newlands and Kurt Empen were very keen to play competitive bowls and did that with great spirit. They also managed to entice a busload of 30 Salisbury bowlers to The Summit in autumn next year. They are as keen as mustard to enjoy what the wine growing region has to offer and some great bowls of course. Back at the ranch, those who chose to keep the home fires burning enjoyed a game of social bowls in picture perfect conditions. Once again, Mossy had the greens prepared to a tee. Players should note that one of the greens is being taken out of commission for a short while to get some tender loving care. A reminder that nominations close for SDMDBA Two Bowl Triples on 13 November. RUNNING THE GAUNTLET OF THE WEATHER HOOP runners were faced with showery conditions last week but the weather did not deter players, and good numbers turned out hoping for a break in the weather and managed three hours play before the rain set in again. Dianne Wren started her day in great form, top scoring with nine hoops in the doubles, playing with Elaine Brown against Bill Golding and Shirley Evans. Golding and Evans however managed
to sneak home 13-12 in what was a very close game. Judy Lock featured in the other grouping, playing alone with two balls against Val Fancourt and Teresa Pyne. Lock top scored with nine hoops with one of her balls in a total score of 12 against her opponents 11. In the later triples event, Val Fancourt, Elaine Browne and Dianne Wren defeated Bill Golding, with Shirley Evans top scoring in both of her games. In association croquet, Margaret Dickenson and Andrea Denkewitz were narrowly defeated by Jenny Tunbridge and Val Richardson, with the scores 16-15. Val Richardson played some great shots in this game. In the singles game, Pat Schnoor proved too strong for Grace Howard, winning 26 - 12. Included in her score were three breaks of three. Joy Newman and Carol Verwey scored 26 to claim a win over from Effey Russel and Heather Widderick (11). In this game, Joy Newman had one break of three and Carol Verwey two. Conditions for gateball were perfect on Friday morning for the visit of Carol and Herman from the Australian Gateball Union. A game of triples was played in preparation for the tournament the club will hosting on 21 and 22 November. Several visiting teams will be in the district to enjoy the tournament and take in the local attractions. Players found the triples game far more intensive. Some members enjoyed playing two balls instead of the usual one. The games were close, and players are sure to be putting in plenty of time practising in the next few weeks as they prepare for the tournament. Again this year Warwick East is offering $3300 in prize money for the November Carnival on 14 and 15 November. Nomination fees are $180 per team for five rounds and includes lunch on Saturday and Sunday and a barbecue dinner on Saturday evening before the twilight round. Despite the loss of early wickets, they batted out the full 50 overs. A partnership between Todd Brady and Col Harris netted 85 runs as Stanthorpe pushed the score along to 175. Baba Marino and Col Harris both batted well in the Stanthorpe innings. The total of 175 looked to be a competitive one as Lockyer lost early wickets. After losing five wickets, they fought back to win the game.

It is sure to be a great day with lots of prizes and a multi draw raffle. CRICKET A FAMILY AFFAIR FOR the Masters, family cricket has always been a family affair. In a rare feat, three generations of the Masters family now hold life membership of the Allora cricket club. Keith Master was the first person to be given the honour of life membership of the club and the ground in Allora also bears his name. Prior to his death in 2013, Master was a regular at all the Allora games. Son Neil and grandson Cameron have now joined him after they were awarded life membership of the club for their service to the club. Glyn Rees the club statistician and former club president was also acknowledged for his contribution with life membership. Foundation committee members Cameron Masters, Neil Masters and Glyn Rees were presented with life memberships of the Allora Cricket Club. WANDERERS SUCCESSFUL IN T20 OPENER THE first of the T20 fixture games was played in Stanthorpe last weekend. Wanderers played Tenterfield and after winning the toss Wanderers batted first. Despite missing some of their key players, Wanderers openers Tim Harslett and Mitch Drayton got the side off to a quick start. Unfortunately, a steady flow of wickets had the side in trouble before Jordan Lanza was able to steady the ship with a much-needed 40 runs. The tail wagged for Wanderers and they finished their innings with a reasonable total of 123. Best of the Tenterfield bowlers were captain Ryan Whitton and M. Austin who took three wickets apiece. In reply, Tenterfield got off to a shaky start as Wanderers opening bowler Einam ripped through the opening batting line-up taking three wickets in his first four overs.
