Simple sleek for winning chic
VISUAL merchandiser Belinda Smith from Pakenham channelled what she’s learnt from her job to put together a winning race day outfit. Her tip – simplicity. In a sleek and elegant white ensemble, Belinda won the prize for the best millinery at the TAB Cranbourne Cup on Sunday 11 October. Wearing a dress by Josh Goot and hat by Allport Millinery, Belinda said she didn’t expect to win with such stiff competition on the day. For more coverage, turn to pages 2 and 6.

CARDINIA Shire Council has reacted to out-dated safety conditions outside a Pakenham gym after two near traffic accidents involving children. An Officer parent of three has said they saw two close calls in Cardinia YMCA’s “chaotic” car park over the past few weeks. Last week, the father, who did not want to be identified, said a young person on a pushbike almost struck a child leaving the basketball stadiums due to a bank up of cars out the front of the entrance which blocked the rider’s visibility. The man said he witnessed a similar incident weeks earlier caused by cars crammed at the gym entrance. The traffic jam blocked a driver’s view of the road, resulting in another close call with a young child - this time with potentially more dangerous consequences. “It’s an accident waiting to happen,” he said. He said he often saw drivers letting children get out of their idling vehicles to make their own way through the car park to the gym, rather than the adult parking their car and accompanying the child into the recreational centre.
Until last week there was a clearance zone and pedestrian crossing outside the popular Pakenham gym. The installations were removed by the council which said they did not comply with current standards and guidelines. The council’s senior traffic engineer Nicholas Charrett said the signage was reviewed after a complaint was lodged. He acknowledged the potential safety issues within the car park. “Council has reviewed the signage needs in this location in consultation with staff from the YMCA, which manages the facility on council’s behalf,” he said. “New signs that permit two-minute parking for dropping off and picking up passengers will be installed near the car parking bays at the entrance, making the location safer for both pedestrians and motorists. “Visitors to Cardinia Life will be permitted to stop in these parking bays for a maximum of two minutes; they are designed as drop-off and pick up points for users of the facility.” The signs are expected to be installed by mid-November.

Spring into the races By RUSSELL BENNETT PUNTERS and fashionistas alike were treated with brilliant spring sunshine at the new Pakenham racecourse for Empire Guineas Day on Saturday. Pakenham Racing Club CEO Michael Hodge said the club was “delighted to have received an increased 10 race program for Guineas Day. “The magnificent weather added to the experience of those enjoying our corporate and guest packages, from which we received some fantastic feedback, he said. “Guineas Day was a great way to kick off the Spring Racing Carnival for the Pakenham Racing Club, with the promise of even more excitement and great racing
to unfold at the track later in Spring. Tomorrow (Thursday, 15 October), the Tynong facility will host a nine-race program featuring over $350,000 in prize money, which was transferred from Moe in the wake of last-minute track renovations. Mr Hodge is thrilled with the boost to the local racing calendar, saying: “The transfer of the meeting from Moe Racing Club is a great addition to our feature race days during Spring, and it also is a huge vote of confidence by the industry in this new racecourse. News photographer ROB CAREW was out and about at Guineas Day, capturing all of the action.

Super sign knockback By ANEEKA SIMONIS CARDINIA Shire Council has knocked back a major roadside advertisement proposed for Pakenham. The double-sided sign, pitched to be more than 40 square metres in size, was planned for private land on the corner of Racecourse Road and Campbell Street in Pakenham. Councillors refused the application for the major promotional signage, agreeing it
would impact the area’s amenity and create distractions for road users, at a town planning meeting on Monday 5 October. The council’s development and compliance services manager Brett Jackson said the proposed sign, which was larger than any advertisement sign within the shire, did not comply with the Advertising Standards Board. “(Councillors) determined the sign would have an unacceptable impact on the visual amenity of the area and create
clutter, in an area that acts as a gateway to Pakenham,” he said. It is unclear what the sign proposed to advertise, though council documents outlined the applicant, Salvestro Planning, intended to regularly change the content of the sign. It is believed the sign would have featured government-based promotional campaigns throughout the rotation. The rejection follows a similar decision made by the council in regards to a
major proposed advertisement sign for the Bald Hill Road area. The council rejected the large advertisement sign, a decision later affirmed by VCAT, as it also presented similar issues in the Pakenham area undergoing significant renewal and redevelopment. “The proposal for a major promotion sign is inconsistent with State and council policy and will prejudice the character and future development of the area,” the town planning document read.
School excited about calming room nomination By ANEEKA SIMONIS A PAKENHAM primary school is in the running for the 2015 Victorian Education Excellence Awards. Pakenham Consolidated School Sensory Activity Program has been acknowledged as one of the top programs across the state. The sensory room provides a calm and creative space for students who are experiencing anxiety or behavioural difficulties. It delivers one-hour small group activities including cooking and craft lessons to enhance students’ physical, emotional and social skills. The elective program put on by the school’s Education Support Team is one of three innovative programs that have been nominated as a 2015 Outstanding Education Support Team Award Finalist. Minister for Education James Merlino congratulated finalists who were nominated for the renowned state awards for outstanding teachers, support staff and programs. “I congratulate all 30 finalists for the magnificent work they are doing to prepare our kids for work and life,” he said. “Our teachers, principals and other education professionals are crucial to making Victoria the education state.” Individual category winners will receive up to $20,000 for professional development while team-based award winners will receive up to $25,000. Each category winner will go into running for the top gong - the Lindsay Thompson Award for Excellence in Education, which comes with a further $20,000. The award winners will be announced on World Teachers’ Day on Friday 30 October.
CARDINIA kinders will share in more than $180,000 to improve playrooms and boost technology. The State Government on Tuesday 13 October announced successful Children’s Facilities Capital Program grant applicants. Bayles Preschool will receive a $10,000 Minor Infrastructure Refurbishment Grant - one of 122 handed out to refurbish playgrounds and improve access for children of all abilities. Families and Children Minister Jenny Mikakos said IT Grants went to 249 kindergartens for new laptops, tablets and other digital hardware.

A NARRE Warren student will soon be showcasing his smarts on the world stage. Andrew Leong, who recently completed a PhD at Monash University, has been awarded a position as a post-doctoral researcher at John Hopkins University in Maryland, on America’s East coast. The position, which could last up to five years, will see Andrew collaborate with a range of different teams, like the Defense Threat Reduction Agency which is responsible for countering weapons of mass destruction. “My specific project is to study the damage induced on materials under different extreme circumstances such as missile attacks and earthquakes,” Andrew said.
“The knowledge gained from this will help improve the design of buildings and vehicles in withstanding such extreme circumstances.” For his PhD Andrew investigated respiratory diseases – such as lung cancer, emphysema and cystic fibrosis – a leading cause of death among Australians. “Many of these respiratory diseases can be successfully treated if detected early,” Andrew said. “However, our current diagnostic techniques are inadequate in early detection of such diseases. “The aim of my PhD project was to develop more sensitive diagnostic techniques that were also safe for the patient.”
Working as a physicist Andrew collaborated with engineers and physiologists to develop these techniques, which are currently being tested in advanced facilities including the Australian Synchrotron and SPring-8 in Japan. When visiting Andrew and his father Ni Tec Leong this month, Holt MP Anthony Byrne commended the “talented young physicist” and remarked on the “bright future” set out before him. “I am very proud that he will be working at one of the most prestigious medical institutions in the world,” Mr Byrne said. “I wish Andrew all the best on his future journey and I look forward to hearing reports on his research and his achievements.”

Jailed for abuse on Facebook recognise the intervention order under the “Queen’s law”, according to the police summary. Albert was also charged with harassing one of the victims, phoning up to seven times on a private number on 21 August and referring to “the turk” post. “I have not breached anything. Those are alleged lies. I never called her in my life,” he allegedly told police. Albert was also charged with driving unlicenced, driving an unregistered vehicle, driving an unroadworthy vehicle and driving with false number plates in Noble Park on 3 April. Magistrate Julie O’Donnell said the “distasteful” posts and phone calls had been frightening to the victim. She said Albert’s offending contravened his community correction order at the time. She didn’t penalise him for that since he’d otherwise completed 90 per cent of required appointments and unpaid work. Albert was jailed for eight months and fined $1500 on the other matters. His 45 days in remand were counted as time served in custody.

Atipan is holding a night of cultural singing and dancing at the River Gum Performing Arts Centre in Hampton Park to raise the final $8000 needed to finish the building. Mr North said the shelters will be used day to day as work centres to enable the locals to earn some income. “The two buildings combined can take a large number of villagers; they are the only safe buildings in the whole Iloilo district,” he said. AID group Atipan is holding a night of cultural singing and dancing in Hampton Park to raise the final cash needed for typhoon safe refuge houses in the Philippines. The project began following the devastation caused when Typhoon Yolanda struck the Philippines two years ago. Atipan means ‘to care’ in Filipino and it has grown from a small group of Dandenong Baptist Church members to a not for profit project. The committed team now has members from across Casey and Dandenong.
Atipan aimed to raise $25,000 to construct two concrete refuge houses to provide typhoon safe shelter in the Philippines. The team has already raised $17,000 which has left the shelters half built. Atipan co-ordinator, Laurie North, from Dandenong said after his first visit to the typhoon affected areas he knew a lot more had to be done. “The devastation and damage was absolutely unbelievable. “These people had nothing left,” Mr North said. “It didn’t take long to realize that these lovely people would not be safe from typhoons for years to come,”

A NARRE WARREN South man has been jailed after pleading guilty to Facebook abuse of two victims in breach of a full family violence intervention order. Lionel Ari Albert had denied to police he was bound by the order, which banned him from approaching and contacting the victims, or publishing on the internet about them, a court was told on 11 October. According to a police summary, Albert - an ice user with an extensive history of drug possession and trafficking - had been kept in custody since arrested over the matters in Noble Park in late August. In one of his Facebook posts in April-June, he had called one of the victims a “f***ing low life dog” and that she was a “full of s*** b****”. Albert ended the message with “ps the turk will find you dog”. The victim knew of “the turk” as Albert’s friend and someone known to act violently to women, according to the summary. Albert admitted to police that he posted the items but denied to police that he knew “the turk”. He told them he had the right to publish the posts, claiming not to

FLORAL flair, lace and bold colour stole the runway at this year’s TAB Cranbourne Cup Fashions on the Field competition as more than 30 brave women strolled down the trackside catwalk. The beaming sun set a glorious backdrop for the fashion headquarters with the three judges blown away at the race-day-appropriate, well-co-ordinated and stylish frocks and fascinators on show. The experienced judging panel of three, model and milliner Caitrin O’Rourke, trainer at Ken Keys Racing Kasey Keys and face of ‘Flemington’s Playground of Racing Royalty’ campaign, Alison Saville said they were “very impressed”. “The millinery on show today was outstanding – what we look for is really well put together ensembles which reflect their personality and compliments their body shape,” Ms Saville said. With three competitions judged on the day, five lucky ladies got to take home a sash in the Lady of the Day over-35s category, the Young Lady of the Day under-35s category and the prize for Best Millinery. Dressed in red lace and white tulle and a pair of pale pink lace gloves, Alison Spence, from St Kilda, won the hotly contested Young Lady of the Day competition. After three heats and against 10 finalists, Ms Spence took home the sash and collection of prizes in a Chi Chi London dress, Olga Berg handbag, heels from Myer and hat by Emily O’Regan Millinery. “This was one of the easiest outfits I’ve put together, the hardest part was finding the shoes and gloves to match,” Ms Spence said after her win. Having competed in the Caulfield Cup fashions on the field once before Ms Spence knew what was important – that being ladylike gloves. “I found the gloves on eBay and had to dye them myself,” she said. With everything matching down to her red sparkly stud earrings Ms Spence took centre stage under the fashions marquee with Lady of the Day winner, 55-year-old Anne Kelly from Beaconsfield. Shining in pearls and representing Berwick and Pakenham boutiques Ms Kelly was the only contestant to wear a coat on the day and was humbled by the win. “I just loved these purple heels by Moschino and I made the outfit around the shoes,” Ms Kelly said. Wearing a hat made by a friend, a baby blue shift dress by Nicola Finetti and a purple clutch from Embellish Fashions in Pakenham it was Ms Kelly’s pastel printed coat from Pol Boutique in Berwick that stood out among the competitors. “I worked on the outfit for a few weeks and just can’t believe I’ve won,” she said. Seasoned racewear fashionista, Ms Saville, said it was lovely to see lace gloves and a coat on show. “I do love gloves, it’s very ladylike and I think gloves and a coat are very appropriate for fashions on the field,” Ms Saville said. Red made a prominent appearance on the catwalk along with high neck lines and pearl accessories but it was the man dressed in navy and high-vis yellow that got everyone talking. With the lads missing out on their chance to trot the runway this year Constable Ryan Blake decided to step up to the plate, mastering some poses and delighting crowds when it was announced the Cranbourne police officer was also single. The bachelor was called up for an encore performance and even

Angels to the rescue BERWICK man Bill Hedges would have died if not for the kindness of strangers. So he and his wife Kath are reaching out to thank those who came to his aid when he collapsed on Clyde Road, near Homestead Road, on Tuesday 29 September. “I went for a walk. I’d been in hospital a couple of months earlier and put some stents in my heart,” Mr Hedges said. “This girl, 16 to 18 years old, was passing just as I was ready to fall flat on my face.” He handed her his phone and asked her to call an ambulance. “I don’t remember much after that,” he said. Mr Hedges said an ambulance and MICA intensive care paramedics were soon on the scene.
“The next thing I know, one of the women trying to get some ID took my wallet - she put it back though!” he said. He asked her to call his wife and alert her to the situation. “I never got any of the women’s names,” he said. “Three or four came out and helped while waiting for an ambulance.” Mr Hedges spent the night in hospital. The following day he spoke to ABC Radio’s John Fayne in a bid to thank his rescuers. “I wanted to say thank you to those people who cared for me, while I’m laying down flat on my back,” he said. He ended up back in hospital two days after the incident and is “still not in the good books”. Mrs Hedges is just happy to still have “the kindest man” by her side.
“Those people who stopped and helped my husband and rang an ambulance for him saved his life,” she said. “I mean that. He would have died. “Those kind people, I don’t know their names - they were just kind people. “I want them to open the paper and know that we said thank you.” Mrs Hedges was devastated to receive the phone call alerting her to her husband’s hospital dash, but is eternally grateful. “The young girl must have been terrified,” she said. “I don’t know who they are. “I wanted them to know that we wanted to say thank you and they saved his life.”
Bill Hedges is lucky to be alive. 145480

Monkey bike seized at college A PAKENHAM man has had his monkey bike seized after he was caught riding it without a helmet at Hampton Park Secondary College. On Wednesday 7 Octo-
ber, the 20-year-old male was disqualified from riding his unregistered bike which was seized under Casey Council local laws. He was spotted riding the bike on the school’s oval, and
the bike is expected to be destroyed unless it is claimed. A spokesperson from the college said it was a great outcome to what had been an ongoing problem.

Downs a place to call home By GEORGIA WESTGARTH NOW dotted with more than 300 houses the Kimberley Downs Estate in Narre Warren South was once a farm with just one homestead. Then lined with peach trees and brangus cattle, the Davis family bought the 110 acres in 1972 – and for the past 10 years Monique Davis has been selling off large parcels of it. “When I sell the blocks I don’t go into the fact that I grew up here and that the Davis family are the owners, developers and selling agents,” Ms Davis said. With just 26 blocks left to sell, Ms Davis said she was proud of what her family had created. “We’ve built a lake, wetlands,
parkland and a playground and I’ve loved subdividing the land into big blocks,” she said. Choosing to divide the 110 acres into blocks from 600 square metres to 1200 square metres was the family’s one desire – to ensure their estate stood out from the rest. “We wanted to be able to subdivide it into an estate that we could be proud of with big blocks of land for big quality houses,” Ms Davis said. “These last 26 blocks are special and unique because no other estates in the area have sold blocks as big as ours and we are pretty much the last bit of big land left in Narre Warren South,” she said. With their vision strongly in mind
the final blocks will be auctioned at 1pm on Saturday 17 October. “It’s the first time we’ve auctioned this land but we wanted to give everyone the same opportunity,” Ms Davis said. The estate currently has about 350 homes built on it and will eventually hold 385 – including the original homestead, which has been renovated. Ms Davis said she will be feeling mixed emotions at the auction surrounded by the place her family called home for more than 40 years. “As a child, Narre Warren South was just paddocks, dirt roads, farms and market gardens but as a family we are very proud of what Kimberly Downs has become,” she said.
Monique Davis has sold every single block of land on her family’s 110-acre estate and the last 26 blocks will be auctioned off on Saturday 17 October, at 1pm. Monique is pictured with a photo of what the estate once looked like. 145564 Picture: KIM CARTMELL

Acid on his buttocks By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS AN ALLEGED illicit drug trafficker who held police at bay for five hours during a siege in Hampton Park has alleged that battery acid was poured on his buttocks by a bikie gang member. Police informant Detective Senior Constable Rebecca Maiden, of Casey CIU, told a court bail hearing on Monday that Daniel Saab, 22, was remanded in custody after allegedly threatening to kill and falsely imprisoning a close relative. Det Sen Const Maiden alleged Saab had argued with a close relative about money, punched her arm and kicked her while forbidding her to leave her lounge room for several hours on 24 September. The victim was told by Saab that “you’re dead” if she left or called the police, the court heard. The mother eventually convinced Saab to release her to buy him cigarettes. She did not return to the address, but reported the incident to police. About 9.15am the next day, Saab’s cousin visited outside the home’s locked front gate and heard a single gunshot fired inside.

pakenhamnews.starcommunity.com.au
After an ensuing five-hour police siege, Saab surrendered in an observably drug-affected state, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court was told. Inside the house, police found a black imitation firearm, a knife, a firearm butt, a deal bag containing three grams of amphetamines, and unknown tablets believed to be a drug of dependence. Saab had been on bail at the time to face the County Court in April over eight offences involving an alleged Doveton clandestine laboratory on 30 July, the court heard. He was also to face a charge of contravening a community corrections order in January. Since being in custody, Saab had been in hospital receiving skin grafts for his wounds, his lawyer told the court. The lawyer alleged Saab had been recently assaulted with battery acid by a “bikie in the drug culture” prior to the siege. During last weekend, Saab provided a statement to police about the alleged assault in an effort to “stand up to the person who assaulted him”. The accused wanted to extract himself from the drug scene and his ice and amphetamine addiction, the lawyer said.
Magistrate Julie O’Donnell warned the lawyer such matters should be sealed and handed up to the court. “There’s press in here today.” In considering bail, Ms O’Donnell said the accused had an “extensive history” of “extraordinarily serious charges”. “He seems to be actively involved in the drug industry and perhaps not just a user of drugs”. She said it was unusual that family members were prepared to fund Saab’s long-term rehabilitation. “Generally I’d refuse bail but I have to say that his age has to be a factor here. It’s bail here, and not sentencing, and it’s all about risk. “No-one can say there’s no risk but the risk is somewhat mitigated by the treatment program the family proposes.” Saab was bailed on condition of reporting weekly to police, complying with a family violence intervention order, residing at a specific address and not using illicit drugs. Star News has chosen not to reveal Saab’s bailed address. He was bailed to appear in court on 7 December.

He’s better with ageing
FREE CONSULTATION FOR BRACES
By GEORGIA WESTGARTH
1200392-CG39-15
HIS motto is “I’m going to die happy” and for more than 10 years John Doutch has been spreading it all over Casey. An ageing positively champion Mr Doutch, 68, has been recognised in this year’s Victorian Seniors of the Year Awards, taking home the COTA Senior Achiever Award on Thursday 1 October at Government House. The Berwick resident of 16 years and avid volunteer said he was very humbled by the recognition. “It may be a glass trophy with my name on it but it’s not about what I’ve got in my hand it’s what it means,” Mr Doutch said. Spreading his time between four different volunteer-run organisations all based around ageing positively, Mr Doutch said the programs are about giving people the tools to deal with some of the challenges faced with ageing. “We age from the day we are born but as we become more mature the number of challenges such as finance, health, self-esteem, loneliness and isolation increase,” he explained. “As you grow older things can happen that you may not have expected, like caring for grandchildren and health conditions can change and you need to be able to manage them all psychologically.” As the world trails behind the three w’s Mr Doutch said the programs he is a part of are very much needed in Victorias ageing population. “Things have changed and ‘if you want more information’ it always starts with w, w, w and people of a mature age haven’t been trained in that technology. “Even though they are becoming more tech savvy, I can lead them to organisations that can assist with their needs instead of visiting a website,” he said.
John Doutch with his COTA award which he received at Government House earlier this month. 145340 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS Giving people a helping hand to remain independent Mr Doutch said he may be 68 years old but he’s still young. “Life expectancy is a lot longer in general which means there are more challenges to overcome and the older generation can be typecast and seen as a burden. “I do what I do because I want to give back to the community I’ve grown up with and assist people to age in a positive sense,” he explained. Winner of the City of Casey Senior Citizens Award last year Mr Doutch said it’s nice to receive a thankyou every now and again. “It was a fantastic experience to be in Government House and be presented with an award in front of the Governor of Victoria,” he said.

Trainer Troy tough enough By LACHLAN MOORHEAD TROY Hawkins has never forgotten when someone told him he’d never be a personal trainer. Born with Spina Bifida, a degenerative spinal condition, 26-year-old Troy has a hole in his lower back which severed his nerves, making him very weak in his lower back and legs. When Troy spoke to someone about completing a Certficate III in Fitness, they told him he wouldn’t be physically capable. But Troy, from Cranbourne, bottled that comment and used it as motivation. After five years working in the field Troy has recently taken a role as a personal trainer at Casey ARC in Narre Warren. He’s come a long way. “He said I was physically incapable of doing the course, and having someone say something like that really hurts you,” Troy said. “I was extremely devastated, I was with my Dad at the time and I remember it, I bawled my eyes out for two hours. “But Dad gave me that encouragement, my Dad and my Mum, they encouraged me to do as much as I could and that helped me develop the right mindset and right work ethic.” Troy cites his parents, Roland and Tracey, as two of the biggest inspirations in his life.
Personal trainer, Troy Hawkins at his second home, Casey Picture: DONNA OATES ARC. 145426 After enduring 18 surgeries so far in his life, Troy has remained determined and continues to chase his dream. While he relies on crutches and a wheelchair, he has never been deterred from becoming a personal trainer. “I’ve always been interested in the sport field, and I’ve always wanted to do what everyone else was doing,” Troy said. “I’ve always wanted to push those boundaries.”
He also credits Casey ARC with giving him another fresh outlook on things. “Basically I found I needed a change from what I was doing previously,” he said of his new position at Casey ARC. “I saw the advert online and went through the interview process ... they gave me the job within a few weeks. “Working there has been really good; it’s just a great environment.”

YOUNG FAMILY BUYS FOR THE FUTURE DEANDRA De Silva admits when she and her partner Cameron Coleiro were presented with the contract to purchase their first home, a spacious four-bedroom plus study house located in Stage 1 of Ramlegh Springs, they were both thinking well into the future when they signed on the dotted line. Although Deandra, 23, and Cameron, 26, didn’t have plans to start a family any time soon, their decision to buy at Ramlegh Springs - on a big block a short walk from the development’s long list of on-site amenities - would ensure a smooth transition when the pitter-patter of tiny feet becomes a part of their everyday life. “We did heaps of research and visited all the other developments in the area before we made our final decision,” Deandra said. “The major difference between Ramlegh Springs and the other estates was the features in the masterplan - the shopping centre and wetlands and walking tracks, as well as the childcare and medical centres and the proposed primary school.” “Having all these amenities and services contained within the estate will make our life so much easier - Cam and I both have to travel to get to work every day so it will be nice not having to jump in the car every time we need a litre of milk.” “We both can’t wait to walk to the shops, or to drop the kids off at school or see the doctor, and all our neighbours will be in the same boat, which will, hopefully, make for a really friendly, tight-knit local community.” Ramlegh Springs’s great value for money and lot inclusions, with front and rear landscaping included in the cost of each Stage 1 home site, meant Cam and Deandra could afford a home which gave them a bit of room to grow and would allow them to plan for their future, a luxury that would have been out of reach had they decided to
SPRING OPENS DOORS TO A NEW HOME First home buyers Deandra and Cameron standing on their very own patch of Ramlegh Springs and the future site of their first family home. buy closer to the CBD. “We both love that Ramlegh Springs is a little bit off the beaten track,” Deandra said. “There’s no traffic noise from main roads, it’s peaceful and quiet, and if we have to visit a major shopping centre, Cranbourne is just down the road, Berwick is only 10 minutes away and the Monash Freeway gives us access to the city and the beach.” Deandra and Cam’s hopes to start building before Christmas are on track, with Stage 1 civil engineering works already underway, representing a major milestone for the project. With the project launching less than eight months ago, it is also a significant achievement for the Macdonald family which for decades farmed the land now being transformed into Ramlegh Springs and are now overseeing that process in partnership with APD Projects. Upon completion, Stage 1 will feature 66 new homes located close to the beautiful Ramlegh Park. For more information visit www.ramleghsprings.com.au, find Ramlegh Springs on Facebook or contact estate managers Trudi Kerr or Ted O’Grady from Oliver Hume New Communities on 9684 8144. The Ramlegh Springs sales office is open seven days a week from 11am to 6pm on Pattersons Road, Clyde North, off BerwickCranbourne Road.
DUST off the cobwebs on a dream to build the perfect new home this spring with Peet’s fun-filled Spring Open House event at the Livingston display village in Cranbourne East on Saturday 17 October. Peet is throwing open the doors to 17 new homes - designed by nine of Melbourne’s leading builders - in the heart of its Livingston community to help inspire prospective new home-owners. The award-winning developer is encouraging people to make an afternoon of it, bringing its display villages to life with a whole host of familyfriendly entertainment and activities, mouth-watering refreshments, and the opportunity to win a $2000 Freedom voucher! As part of the celebration, 21 new homesites will be released on the day. These lots range in size from 336 to 777 square metres and are all in easy walking distance of the new Megasaurus Park. Currently under construction, the new park is set to feature a cutting-edge playground with an impressive skeletal dinosaur climbing frame, a slide, cradle swing, climbing scales and even a zip line. “People are at the heart of all our Peet communities, including Livingston, and we hope new homebuyers get a feel for the style of property they could be living in,” said Peet managing director and CEO, Brendan Gore. “This event will offer a great opportunity to experience first-hand the community buyers could become a part of
when they take that next step of building a home.” Visitors on the day will be encouraged to stroll around the display village, explore the latest in sophisticated styles and modern home design, and find the ideal floorplan to suit their own lifestyles and budget. Builders featured within the new Livingston Display Village include Eight Homes, Simonds Homes, Burbank, Dennis Family Homes, Boutique, Homebuyers Centre, Hotondo, JG King and Amaroo Homes. The Livingston Spring Open House event will begin at 1pm on Bathgate Crescent, Cranbourne East and include three hours of entertainment from roving performers, caricature and balloon artists, food and drink vans and a display village challenge which will invite visitors to discover unique facts from the builders’ homes. Livingston in Cranbourne East is already home to more than 450 households, many of whom were attracted to the estate by the more than 10 hectares of parklands and open space it will feature upon completion, as well as its proximity to Casey RACE and Casey Fields. BUSINESS SOUTH-EAST
A world from care Quinnie the spot tail quoll at Moonlit Sanctuary.
Tourism
145062
By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM JUST a short drive from the city, the Casey-Cardinia region can feel a world away from the buzz of the city making it an ideal tourist destination. Congratulations to the finalists in the tourism category of the Casey-Cardinia business awards. Spread over 10 hectares of Pearcedale bushland, the aim of Moonlit Sanctuary Conservation Park is twofold: to protect native Australian species, and to educate guests on native plants and animals and the importance of conservation. Visitors to the park will meet endangered species, feed kangaroos, pet koalas and encounter Australian natives such as dingoes, wombats and various reptiles. Living up to its name, the sanctuary comes alive at night with guests spotting beautiful night birds on a lantern-lit tour. The park has a strong fo-
cus on conservation, running a breeding program, and has implemented several water and energy saving measures. They also focus on education, with schools regularly visiting the sanctuary to learn about its animals and practices. Racing comes to life at Pakenham Racing Club. Backed by over 100 years of history, the brand new Tynong facility boasts two hospitality and entertainment venues as well as a 2400-metre turf track and a 2000-metre Polytrack. The events centre can cater for up to 1000 people and features stunning floor to ceiling windows for optimum race viewing. Over 40 meets per season are held at Pakenham, drawing crowds from around the state. With a 16,000 capacity on racedays, the Pakenham Racing Club brings the elegance and excitement of rac-
ing to Casey-Cardinia, in turn providing business opportunities for other tourism operators in the area. Guests to the region will find themselves comfortable and well-accommodated at Quest Narre Warren. Quest’s one, two or three bedroom apartments will cater to groups of any size, whatever the reason for their stay may be. Quest offers all the conveniences of top serviced accommodation, including on-site reception, internet access, breakfast options, housekeeping and 24 hour on-site management. There are also conference facilities, barbecues, car parking and a swimming pool onsite. Located conveniently on Princes Highway, Quests offers a modern and welcoming feel to all its guests. The winner of the Tourism Award will be announced at a gala dinner on 22 October.

Clean, green advantage Environmental Sustainability
By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM IN a competitive business climate, environmentally-conscious companies set themselves apart. Congratulations to the finalists in the Environmental Sustainability category of the Casey-Cardinia Business Awards. Beaconsfield Dental is a leading dental health provider in the region, and has impressively incorporated sustainability measures into their business model. The building features 60 solar panels, capable of generating up to 100 kilowatts of energy each day. The garden also features an array of Australian plants, with 500 natives complementing the surrounding Akoonah Park.
Double glazing, full insulation, solar hot water, LED lighting and tanks providing water for the garden and toilet are all features that have earned Beaconsfield Dental recognition as an environmentally conscious business. Ten-Rose International Simmental adopts similar values in an entirely different industry. The enterprise has implemented several strategies as part of their commitment to holistic management of cattle and the land. Feed efficiency plays an important role in the business. DNA testing is used to identify high feed efficient cattle, meaning less energy is required in the production of beef. The testing also makes for a valuable commodity - cattle buyers prioritise high feed efficiency when purchasing cows. The business also places a high importance on preserving the habitat of native flora and fauna. They have developed and fenced off a native reserve on the farm, now protected by a Federal Native Title. They plan to plant 10,000 native trees over
the next few years. Kirsten and David Bak own K. and D. Bak Painting and Decorating and have not only been nominated for their environmentally-friendly business practices but also in the trades category of the awards. K. and D. Bak place a high priority on both the health of their customers and the environment. They steer away from conventional paints which continue to release dangerous solvents after they dry. Instead, the business use zero or low VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) paints in consideration of the continued health of their clients. The business is also a registered Enviropainter, meaning they have taken an accredited course in sustainable painting practices. They have accreditation as a HIA Greensmart Professional, accreditation as a GreenPainter and accreditation in implementing safe lead paint and asbestos work practices. The winner of the Environmental Sustainability Award will be announced at a gala dinner on 22 October.
Wastech truckin’ along quietly with garbage to boot By CASEY NEILL QUIET new garbage trucks and street sweepers will hit the road through Hallam’s Wastech Engineering. The FAUN vehicles recently arrived from Germany and are a Variopress Rear Loader and a Viajet 6 Street Sweeper. Wastech marketing coordinator Catherine GardnerGaskin said the trucks were unique in the market for a number of reasons. “They are really quiet; with the German focus on the environment they tick a number of boxes environmentally; and they have some innovative engineering - all of which combined provide great payload, efficient running costs and ease of maintenance,” she said. “One of the things that is interesting is that these trucks
are so quiet the garbage and street sweeper rounds can be done at any time without breaking noise restrictions, which will make garbage collection quicker and out of normal traffic hours earning great efficiencies for waste collection.” Recently Wastech acquired Tieman Field Service and Tieman Tail Lifts, increasing its workforce from 90 to 150-plus employees with 60 mobile service vehicles nationally servicing the waste, recycling, tail lift and materials handling industries. The company has also opened a $3 million purposebuilt service centre in Hallam. “Growing requirements for equipment repairs and servicing meant that Wastech had outgrown the previous service centre site and needed to move on to something bigger,” Ms
Gardner-Gaskin said. It has 1360 square metres of working floor space, 32 full-sized work bays, a 10-tonne overhead crane and 3036 square metres of equipment storage space. “Wastech now has greater capacity to deliver the required equipment maintenance demands of the waste industry, both private and government across greater Melbourne,” Ms Gardner-Gaskin said. “The centre will also become the national service administrative hub responsible for servicing more than 5000 equipment items throughout Australia. “It caters for 24/7 assistance, ensuring that no site is ever left unattended.” Wastech’s head office and manufacturing facility remain in Hallam.

Cafe for special care OPENING day is fast approaching for the Retro 55 Café located at the Specialist Centre at 55 Kangan Drive, Berwick. Café owners Craig and Donna Lewis have been working tirelessly to fit out the retro themed space and refine a menu which offers a delicious selection of raw items in addition to the regular comfort foods. Craig and Donna have run Café Con Leche at St John of God Berwick Hospital for approximately five years and now extend on their experience to also feed patients, caregivers and visitors to the Specialist Centre. The Specialist Centre, home to the St John of God Day Oncology Unit, offers comprehensive cancer services to local patients. “We have chosen the retro theme as it is bright and cheery,” explained Craig. “We want to bring a smile to the faces of those suffering from cancer. Those visiting the centre for treatment can come downstairs and have a break and enjoy a bite to eat in a lively environment.” The raw menu fills a niche in the local market for healthy and appetising foods which are vegetarian and vegan and free from refined sugar, dairy, gluten and soy. The couple, along with their team, prepare 90 per cent of their menu from scratch from their additional site, Earthy Eat-

ST MARGARET’S School and Berwick Grammar School is a non-denominational independent school catering for the whole family, providing co-education from the early years to Year 4 and single gender education from Year 5 to Year 12. The two campuses are part of the one school community with regular, structured, mutually beneficial interactions occurring at each year level which may include drama and music productions, ensembles, community forums, an after-school lecture series, excursions, outdoor education and selected extra-curricular programs.
The school seeks to be personalised and precise in its approach to learning. In being personalised they seek to know your child as a person and how they learn best. In being precise they seek to understand what your child’s individual learning needs are so that they can best assist them to realise their full potential as a learner. Testing time for TAC By JARROD POTTER THE hard work is finally over for a fleet of TAC Cup players after a gruelling week at the AFL National and State Combines. Players from the Dandenong Stingrays and Gippsland Power descended on Etihad Stadium this week for the gruelling testing days – the final chance for the young footballers to impress in front of AFL recruiters ahead of the draft. In Sunday’s Victorian state combine, Gippsland Power duo Matt de Bruin (Pakenham) and Tom Papley (Bunyip) also featured in the state combine, with de Bruin in particular impressing with his 20m sprint time (2.85) from his hard day’s work on Sunday. While much was made of the national combine results the day before, de Bruin’s state combine time bettered that of Kurt Mutimer and Alex Morgan which pleased the athletics convert.“It was pretty relaxed actually,” de Bruin said. “Not too intense and it was very low key as well – no media, no exposure, no nothing. “But was very happy with my results, especially the 20m sprint – “I ran 2.85m, which was the fastest out of both combines, I was really happy with that performance because it was made massive for the winner of it for the national combine the day before. “They got trophies and everything, and I came out and beat it – so it really surprised me.” De Bruin’s 30m repetitive run time – 24.47 – was fastest in state combine and his relative vertical leap placed him at the top of the pile as well. Eight Dandenong Stingrays fea-
Callow has a day out By RUSSELL BENNETT
Gippsland Power’s Matt de Bruin, pictured flying in the Power’s final against Oakleigh, was superb at the Picture: JARROD POTTER AFL State Combine testing day on Sunday. 144002 tured in the national combine – the final chance for AFL recruiters to test and evaluate this year’s batch of potential draftees. Number one draft prospect Jacob Weitering, premier defender Keiran Collins, Narre Warren pair Gach Nyuon and Kurt Mutimer as well as Beaconsfield quartet Bailey Rice, Tommy Glen, Tom Jok and Brandon White performed admirably at the event. Nyuon put his hand up as the premier ruckman in the draft as the All Australian equalled Nick Naitanui’s jumping records – hitting 362cm for the absolute running vertical jump.
From rough diamond to polished AFL prospect in three years as a footballer, Nyuon’s footballing growth has been astonishing and Dandenong Stingrays region manager Mark Wheeler said it has put the 201cm ruckman at the top of his area of expertise. “Young Gach has been great, I got stopped about four or five times and congratulated for the amount of work we’ve been able to do with him,” Wheeler said. “That’s a credit to himself and he’s grown up a lot in the last 12 months.” Also shining on the big stage,
Weitering showed another string to his bow – running a 15.1 beep test impress out of the tall defenders while Collins’ clean hands test (29/30) and running personal best times kept him in recruiters’ minds as well. Mutimer’s express 20m sprint – clocking in at 2.88 seconds – clinched the top time ahead of Alex Morgan, Daniel Rioli and team mate Glen (2.90). From now on the potential draftees’ fate rests in the hands of the recruiting staff ahead of November’s AFL National Draft, held in Adelaide on Tuesday 24 November.
BERWICK jockey Noel Callow won two races on the Pakenham Guineas card at the new Tynong track on Saturday. Callow was aboard the Ciaron Maher-trained Tillzale in race four, the Cross Electrics F&M Maiden Plate over 1600 metres. The horse, out of barrier four, bounced back brilliantly after being comfortably beaten by Dulverton at Hamilton last time out. Then, in race nine – the Live @ the Park handicap over 1400 metres – Callow beat home the Todd Balfourtrained Aagas on board Troy Corstens’ Stars at Night. Aagas was slow to begin and ultimately paid the price against the Corstens horse, which raced too keen in the lead in its last start. Callow also rode Bian Late to second place in the first race on the card, the XXXX Gold Maiden Plate, behind Darren Gauci on Mick Bell’s Victorious. Meanwhile, the John Sadlertrained Digitalism led from start to finish to claim the $300,000 TAB Cranbourne Cup on Sunday – upstaging the likes of Pat Carey’s Kareeming, Tony McEvoy’s Big Memory and David Hayes’ Extra Zero. In an even more stunning result, Carey’s General Jackson pipped the Michael Freedman-trained, Singapore superstar Super One in the $100,000 Apache Cat Classic – the prelude to the Cup. Sunday’s seventh race on the card was the first time the colt had tasted defeat in its young career to date.
Leek’s Spirited cobalt defence By RUSSELL BENNETT PAKENHAM trainer John Leek has come out in staunch defence of his reputation – still gobsmacked that he’s been caught up in the cobalt scandal. Leek is at a loss to explain how his horse Spirit Cent returned a positive test to cobalt, which was over the legal threshold after winning at Pakenham in July. The threshold is 200 mg/l (micrograms a litre in urine) and Spirit Cent’s first sample was 203, while its second was 190. Leek said he fed his horses “just good vitamins and feeds”, adding: “This cobalt thing has turned into a storm in a teacup, and it’s given a lot of people grief, and a lot of pain. “Basically, it’s a vitamin.” Leek said he felt for superstar trainer Peter Moody, who along with Mark Kavanagh and Danny O’Brien, had been charged with the illegal use of cobalt. “He’s a champion fella and this has done his head in when he’s done nothing wrong,” he said.
Leek, from Nar Nar Goon, said independent analysis of one of Spirit Cent’s samples came back at 190. “I’m going to have to see what the stewards are going to do here,” he said. “This is sad for the industry. Really sad. “We don’t even know if it’s a performance enhancer or not.” Leek said any suggestion that cobalt was being administered as a performance enhancer, in the case of his horses, was “just such a far-fetched idea”. “Horses are blood and urine tested all day, every day. “We’ve been caught unawares by this but the public need to know. “If the other sample (the one at 190mg/l, under the threshold) was tested first, I wouldn’t even be in the situation I’m in now. “Exactly the same thing happened to Kevin Moses in Sydney and he got a 12-month disqualification.” Moses has since had his ban overturned on appeal, although the trainer will still pay a $20,000 fine and has a suspend-
ed two-year ban hanging over his head for if he reoffended with any prohibited substance in that period. Leek posted an August story from the Greyhounds Australasia website – titled ‘Additional information for trainers – Cobalt use in greyhounds’ on his personal Facebook page. It is essentially detailed information on cobalt use for greyhound trainers – outlining its effects on their animals in different situations, and it includes study results. “There’s nothing like that in the thoroughbred industry,” he said. “We’ve been caught unawares by this, but the public need to know. “I don’t want to see this industry looked up as if we’re all druggos. “There seems to be a couple of vets who’ve done the wrong thing, and in some cases rogue vets could be involved, but I’m devastated I’m even in this situation. “We don’t even know what our cobalt levels are.”

Pumas pitch for a big win By JARROD POTTER NOT even the darkened skies overhead or the howling wind buffeting home-plate could sour Pakenham’s inaugural summer baseball triumph. Leading from start-to-finish, the Pumas showed they won’t be never-rans in this season’s Victorian Summer Baseball League (VSBL) Division 3 competition with an emphatic 6-0 win over St Kilda. Toomuc Reserve was not a happy hunting ground for the visiting St Kilda squad with Pakenham blitzing the visitors in all facets. Pitching? The Pumas sent in star pitcher James Mills to rattle a few batters and the tactic worked with St Kilda struggling to get on base or affect the scoreboard. Mills was relieved by Jay Ziersch before Martin Kennedy finished off the clash with some superb left-hand pitches to put to rest his forgettable debut on the Pakenham mound last week. How about batting? The bane of the Pumas’ round one defeat was virtually unsighted on Sunday with fighting efforts to stay at-bat or onbase. Travis Hough snuck off first in the sixth before being batted in to increase the lead to three before the party started in earnest at the bottom of the seventh. Pakenham smashed anything St Kilda’s relief pitcher had to offer with Kennedy, coach Shaun Fahy and Wayne Porter brought in for RBIs to cap off the sensational performance.

Fahy said the 11-run loss last week and the victory on Sunday were night and day as the side attacked from the pitcher’s mound and didn’t give anything up cheaply. “Our pitchers threw strikes which was really good, threw the ball into the bat and made the batters put the ball in play so we didn’t give away any free bases this week,” Fahy said. “Our pitchers were fantastic and once the balls were put into play our defence came into the fore and had a strong day. “We pulled away and didn’t let them have any runs and we scored a few and our pitchers were fantastic.” While the pitchers were miserly, Fahy said it was the fighting at-bats that threw off St Kilda and left them
Silverbacks on the grid THE Pakenham Silverbacks sit comfortably inside the top four of the Gridiron Victoria junior standings after another super impressive victory on Sunday afternoon. Fresh off back-to-back victories, including a thrilling two-point triumph over local rivals, the Berwick Miners at Rawling Field in Endeavour Hills last Sunday, the Silverbacks rode a wave of momentum into their game with the Northern Raiders at DR Atkinson Reserve in Reservoir. And they made the most of it, too, with a convincing 28-14 win. The result now moves the Pakenham side to a 3-2 record from its first five games – rebounding impressively from a pair of heavy losses to the Western Crusaders and Croydon Rangers respectively in weeks one and two of the 2015 season. The Silverbacks will now look to continue their charge when they head back to Rawling Field at Sydney Pargeter Reserve in Endeavour Hills this Sunday to take on another side from their side of the city – the South Eastern Predators. The Predators have struggled badly to start the season and may provide the Silverbacks with a great chance to extend their winning run. This Sunday’s game begins at 12.45pm. QUIZ NUMBER 1474

no option but to bring in the last dregs of their bullpen. “Definitely quality at our bats - quality at-bats make the pitchers throw a lot of pitches, fight off their good pitchers then hit the bad ones and our guys hit them all day - four or five with multiple hits and played really well to hit six runs. “Could have had more, played into three double-plays early and had runners on, but other than that it was a fantastic batting effort all around.” Pakenham’s next challenge will be at home against Dandenongbased Mulgrave on 18 October from 3.30pm. The Pumas’ seconds were pummelled 2-21 by St Kilda in the curtain-raiser to the senior side’s victory while the division four side was similarly thumped 1-24 by Monash Uni.
Lions turn tables on Bulls By JARROD MCALEESE and RUSSELL BENNETT PAKENHAM posted an impressive opening round victory in the West Gippsland Cricket Association’s (WGCA) Premier division, knocking off last season’s losing grand finalists Cardinia. The Bulls were unbeaten throughout the 2014/15 regular season, only ousted in the decider by a Kooweerup side that will go down in history as one of the greatest teams in the WGCA. But at their E. Gunton Oval home on Saturday, the Bulls could not convert top order starts and struggled to fight through the troughs that accompanied the peaks in their innings. Winning the toss and electing to bat, the Bulls were dismissed for just 132 in the 39th over. Boom recruit Ben Maroney (32) combined with opener and vice-captain Alex Nooy (29) but they were the only two Bulls batsmen to pass 20. The Lions’ slower bowlers wrought havoc, with Jason Williams and newcomer Ben Shipperd finishing with 3/28 and 3/16 respectively. Returning from a long layoff due to injury, Lions skipper Dom Paynter acknowledged it was a focus for his side to keep the pressure on for the 40 overs. “Boof and Shipp really turned the game on its head,” Paynter told the Gazette after the game. “They (Maroney and Nooy) are two really good bats and they’re great at manipulating the bowling,” he said. “But our spinners just kept putting it on a good spot.” Pakenham ultimately won by five wickets, reaching Cardinia’s total in the 37th over. Wicket keeper-batsman Rob Elston (34) – like Shipperd – made a huge impact in his Lions debut, while Paynter marked his comeback with 54 not out. “I definitely was nervous – it has been over a year,” he said.
“But I was able to keep my head in the game batting with Robbie (Elston).” Bulls’ player-coach Dwayne Doig, back from a stint at Langwarrin, claimed 2/18 in his eight overs. The Lions’ will this week face Cranbourne Meadows and Upper Beaconsfield respectively in Round 2 on Saturday and Round 3 on Sunday. The Bulls, meanwhile, tackle Upper Beaconsfield on Saturday before a blockbuster fixture with Tooradin on Sunday. District side Officer, meanwhile, punished a sub-par batting performance from Nar Nar Goon/Maryknoll, posting a comfortable six wicket victory. Nick Bransgrove (15) and new skipper Adam Ciavarella (18) knuckled down early but the pair was halted by captain Shane White (2/6) and Brayden McHugh (3/20). White prevented any resistance, searing through the Marygoons with a double strike and five maidens. Quick runs were made late by Kevin Wheeler (25) but it was too little too late from the Marygoons who were rolled for 100. The Bullants smashed the runs in 24 overs as James Parnall (32) and Prince Singh (30) fired Officer to top spot. Kidman Johnstone (2/17) was the best of the Marygoons’ brigade. Officer host Carlisle Park and Nar Nar Goon/Maryknoll battle Devon Meadows this Saturday. Pakenham’s Sub-District outfit (8/168) accounted for newcomers St Francis Xavier (99) on Saturday. Dene North (49) and Sam Webster (36) combined for a 76-run stand before Brett Irvine (27) provided middle order runs. The SFX top seven produced just 39 between them as only wicketkeeper Josh Collins (45) held up his end. Aaron Beveridge (3/26) was the chief destroyer, supported by Harley Hulme (2/14) and John Hutchinson (2/19) as Pakenham opened their campaign with a victory.
Mixed bag for Pakenham PAKENHAM BOWLS CLUB MIDWEEK PAKENHAM'S Midweek Pennant bowlers had one team at home and two away on Tuesday, 6 October for a mixed bag of results in round two. Pakenham One travelled to Caulfield Park Alma where they recorded a comprehensive win, getting up on all rinks with an 88 to 40 score overall and bagging the maximum 16 Pennant points. The best winning rink was Charles Harris (s), Gary Pincott (3), Keith Archer (2) and Ash Graham (1) with a thumping 36 to seven score card. The Ones will be at home for round three, and will host near neighbours Cardinia Waters (2). The Twos were also away, losing in a close and low scoring game by 52 shots to 55 against Waverley Golf (3) at Rowville. The best of two winning rinks was John Coote (s), Alan Wilcock (3), Gail Wilcock (2) and Joan Montgomery (1) with a 19 to 13 scorecard. The Twos will also be at home for round three, their opponents being Cranbourne RSL (1). Pakenham’s Threes were at home to Waverley Golf (4) for a comfortable if not flawless win (one rink down by two shots) with an overall 72 shots to 50 score line. The best winning rink, 29 to 16, was John Hickman (s), Norm Box (3), Roy Harvie (2) and Mary Price (1). The Threes are scheduled to play away against Burden Park (2) in round three. PENNANT Stung by last week’s defeats,
Pakenham’s top three Saturday Pennant sides all bounced back with good wins at home on the weekend, while the fours continued their winning streak with a victory at Mooroolbark. Pakenham One easily disposed of Vermont South (2) winning overall by 119 shots to 44. In the end the score was very lopsided with only one rink having a close finish – Rhino Drummond getting home 20 shots to 16. The best of the others with the biggest score (44 to nine) were Daniel Hudson (s), Neil Drummond (3), Terry McRedmond (2) and Brian Biasci (1). The win delivered maximum Pennant points and saw Pakenham 1 elevated from close to the bottom of the ladder up to second spot. Their opponents for round three will be Keysborough (1) at Keysborough. The win by Pakenham Two followed a similar script to that adopted by Pakenham 1, i.e. thump your opponent (100 points to 51) on three rinks and collect maximum Pennant points but allow one close rink to add a bit of interest. In this case it was Sue Hudson and her crew (Keith Archer (3), Jack Hammond (2), Graham Taylor (l) who had the tight battle. They were down all day but picked up two shots on the last end to grab the win by a single shot. Best of the big winners with a huge 36 to eight score were Wally Noy (s), Jim Barrie (3), David Laird (2) and Reg Mattingly (l). The Twos, now sixth on the ladder, play eighth, Elsternwick (2) away in round three.
Sue Hudson draws another shot on the last end which won her the game for Pakenham. Picture: SUPPLIED Adding to the crowd at home on Saturday were Pakenham Three, also hungry for a win. Their opponents on the day were Berwick (6) who apparently did not enjoy the experience, with the locals winning on three of four rinks and up overall by 92 to 66. There were two “best” rinks both with 14 shots up: John Coote (s), Lois Mashado (3), Gian Pianezzola (2) and Fiona Samson (l) 28 to 14; and Charles Harris (s), Paul Walter (3), Anne Emms (2) and Norm Buckley (l) 25 to 11. With the arrival of warmer weather, Three’s skipper and immediate past president Kevin Donald, was apparently happy to be seen out and proud in the new shirt! The Threes (fourth on the ladder) are away again for round three, their opponents being Noble Park (3) who are fifth.
Pakenham Four took the script with them to Mooroolbark where they overpowered their opponents on three rinks but battled for the win on the fourth where Paul Currie (s), Ian Anderson (3), Roger Platt (2) and Ron Hawkins (l) casually picked up fours on the last two ends to win by three shots. Best rink in the 112 to 61 overall win were Leon Brown (s), Ken Clifton (3), John Moore (2) and Peter Jones (l) with a score of 30 to seven. Bagging maximum points over two rounds has placed the Fours in top spot on the ladder - their opponents for the home game in round three will be Burden Park (4) who are in second. Winner of the Hi-Lo for round two with number one was John Hickman (four winning teams on Saturday – President’s shout?).
