Located on Snells Road in Maryknoll, Windana Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Centre made the decision to evacuate its 38 patients and six staff around 3pm. Therapeutic Community Clinician Shannon De Silva said residents took backpacks and were
evacuated to the Cardinia Cultural Centre in Pakenham. “The CFA had advised that there was a potential threat to the property, so we made the decision to leave in the interests of everyone’s safety,” she said. “Luckily, the wind changed direction and the property was spared.” Patients and staff returned to the property around 7pm, at which time a community meeting had been called at the Maryknoll Fire Station.
Maryknoll resident Moira Horton was present at the gathering, and said the CFA along with representatives from Victoria Police and Cardinia Shire provided the community with the most up-todate information. “We received an automated emergency message on our home phone around 6.20, when it was still classified as an emergency warning,” she said. “The CFA updated us on the situation and said that the fire had been brought under control.” Mr Christison said almost 100
residents attended the meeting, where emergency services personnel provided residents with practical information and advice. “The community was given a level of awareness of the situation and about what was happening around them,” he said. The fire was declared under control at 7pm, and crews remained onsite throughout the night. Thanks to the work of fire crews, the only property lost was a shed with an estimated value of $10,000.

FIRE has ripped through areas east of Pakenham this week in a horror start to the Victorian bushfire season. At 2.20pm on Tuesday 6 October, the CFA received the first reports of a grass/scrub fire that had broken out in Nar Nar Goon North. By 3.45pm, more than 30 crews were on scene, attempting to battle the blaze travelling quickly in a westerly direction from Pooley Road towards Mortimer Road. At 4.24pm that afternoon, the CFA issued an emergency warning to people in Maryknoll, Nar Nar Goon North and Tynong for the fast-moving, out-of-control bushfire, which was at that point moving in a northerly direction from Mortimer Road towards Gembrook State Forest. Incident Controller Greg Christison said there were nearly 40 appliances, including Pakenham crews, in attendance at the height of the blaze. “The CFA was the control agency, but we also had crews from DEWLP and Parks Victoria fighting the fire,” he said. “There was a point in time when we had some serious concerns for property in the area, be-

Theft spree hits unlocked cars

All were left unlocked. Police said small portable items stolen included sunglasses, credit cards, GPS devices and loudspeakers. The theft spree made up half the total reported motor vehicle theft incidents reported to police between Monday 28 September and Sunday 4 October in Cardinia Shire and led to a doubling of theft incidents compared to the previous week.
BEACONSFIELD was hard hit by thieves in an overnight spree targeting unlocked cars last week. Overnight on Wednesday 30 September, five thefts were reported to police in residential areas north of the Old Princes Highway in Beaconsfield. In all reported cases, targeted cars were parked in driveways or outside of homes.
Embona Taskforce A GROUP of armed carjackers stole a vehicle and its contents from Lakeside last week. On Thursday 1 October, five men armed with cricket bats and bolt cutters allegedly attacked a man sitting in his 2010 dark grey Subaru Forester. It is believed the man was parked out the front of his house when the incident occurred. He sustained facial injuries from the attack. Police have refused to give further details.

Police received reports of another five separate incidents in Cockatoo, Officer and Pakenham. All of the targeted vehicles were left unlocked, with no signs of forced entry. During the previous week there were thefts reported in Pakenham, Emerald and Nyora - each involving unlocked cars. The fourth incident involved the theft of a registration plate.

Jess is on a mission JESS White would love if every week was Mental Health Week. As the director of Kane’s Crusade - a depression support and awareness group specialising in, but not restricted to, helping young men - Jess, from Berwick, has always been a strong advocate for the importance of mental well-being. And while she tries to push the message at every chance she gets, Jess said Mental Health Week, which was running now from Sunday 4 to Saturday 10 October, and the ABC’s coverage of the initiative, was a project that everyone should get behind. One in four young Australians, aged 16 to 24, have currently experienced a mental health disorder.
“It’s important, I would love to have more than one week’s focus,” she told Star News this week. “And with the spotlight it has through the ABC doing its ‘Mental As’ programming, this week has become a week to celebrate mental health. “To feel inclusiveness, support and appreciation that this happens in everyday life. “I think it’s vital.” Kane’s Crusade was set up in August 2014 and since then has amassed close to 6000 likes on Facebook. Earlier this year, Star News reported on how the group had launched a petition they hoped to deliver to State Parliament, calling for new laws to be promulgated in Victoria which would make

With more than 1000 people responding to the petition call out, Jess is currently getting the numbers together and plans to soon approach her local MPs to table the petition in parliament. Jess, who is trained in ASIST, is also pushing feverishly to set up an ALIVE centre in the City of Casey - a facility specifically for people suffering from depression where they could get medical treatment, physiotherapy, alternative medicines and counselling all under one roof. A MAJOR one million cannabis operation has been foiled in Narre Warren, leading to the arrest of two men. On Monday 5 October, Casey Response and Tasking Team officers executed a warrant on a Vine Grove, Narre Warren. Investigators uncovered more than 490 cannabis plants from the address with an estimated street value of one million. Giang Dyong, a 27-yearold Keysborough man and Viet Hoang, a 19-year-old Noble Park were charged with cultivating and trafficking a commercial quantity of cannabis and theft of electricity. Police spent the past two days dismantling “sophisticated” hydroponic set up, calling in a specialist biologist from Forensic Services, representatives from the power company and the Victoria Police Transport Branch. Both men faced an out-ofsessions hearing and were remanded to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court today.

By GEORGIA WESTGARTH IT’S not every day that someone receives a phone call from the National Australia Day Council about their nomination in the coveted Australian of the Year Awards and for Mark Haughton it was a shock he didn’t see coming. “When you’re doing something that’s in your heart and watching others grow and develop skills through your help you just never stop to think other people notice what you’re doing,” the mentalhealth champion said. Co-founder and director of the Beehive Foundation, Mark Haughton, 52, from Berwick is one of four nominees in the 2016 Victorian Local Hero award. “I’m so honoured and I’m not sure how to describe the feeling - it’s heart-warming,” Mr Haughton said. “People that know me would say I’ve never not got something to say, but I really am speechless,” he said. Mr Haughton said he was looking forward to being able to use the national awards to get his positive self-esteem messages out to a broader young audience in the hope of moving his program interstate. “I’m excited not only to meet other like-minded nominees but it’s like when you have written a song and you know it can affect people positively and you want to get it out there on iTunes. “I want to be able to teach more people the life and preventative

skills I have battled with myself and hear more stories and this can be a vehicle for Beehive to be able to do that,” he said. Mr Haughton has lived in Berwick for 20 years and coached local football teams for most of his life. So he said he was devastated to watch Casey’s youth suicide numbers increase. “The City of Casey is chronic with youth suicide, with more than two youth suicides at the one school and that was the trigger for the Beehive Foundation and as a single par-
ent I wanted to teach my own children,” he explained. Growing up in a violent household in England, Mr Haughton said he’s always been told he has a “heightened sense of anxiety” and it was through his own fears and stress management that he has been able to help many others cope with life’s daily dramas. “I didn’t learn how to react to pressure well and I would shrink away from it and the problems would just get bigger. “I’ve been diagnosed as chroni-
cally depressed and through all of that, for some reason, I’ve always managed to get things done. “It’s about changing your thinking patterns and I began to develop thinking strategies and that’s what the Beehive is about. “We don’t focus on one problem but teach skills that relate to everything,” Mr Haughton said. Mr Haughton has been able to write his own life experiences and have them explained medically by psychiatric clinician Alex Couley for his autobiography and the foundation’s booklets. “Everything I write has a medical explanation by Alex in our programs. “He puts my stories into an educational format which examines both sides of mental health,” Mr Haughton said. Mr Haughton said his job has brought him to tears. “Recently I had students running up to the white board writing things up on what affects them positively and negatively and one child wrote a ‘nice dinner on Sunday with family makes me feel good to start school on Monday’. “And I actually shed a tear and thought ‘we’re getting through’,” he said. The winners of each Victorian category will be announced on Wednesday 28 October and the finalists will be presented at the national award ceremony in Canberra on Australia Day next year.

I NOTE that Ms Inga Peulich, Member for South Eastern Metropolitan, recently made comments about local library funding, suggesting there was a flaw in the way it is currently allocated. Odd, because the current funding model - how the funding is divided between councils - was implemented by the former Liberal Government - Ms Peulich’s government. It is a shame that she took the unconstructive approach of criticising the Andrews government and failing to mention that it was a funding model we had inherited. Despite this, I am more than willing to consult on whether there are better options for funding local libraries, especially in light of our recent record $40 million investment. NO AUSTRALIAN-BORN citizen, no migrant who loves Australia, can condone the Parramatta shooting by Farhad Jabar Khali Mohammad, a 15-year-old boy. There can be no justification for attacks against the police force and police stations. Attacks against police seem to have become a routine, though. Last year two police officers were callously attacked at Endeavour Hills police station and last week a civilian police employee was brutally murdered at Parramatta police headquarters. The motive appears to be the same - religious fanaticism and radicalism. The police need our support because they are the representatives of law and order in our community. They constitute a rampart against any form of violence, public disturbances, riots, murders and acts of terrorism. We should, therefore, all stand up to stop more brutal and unjustified attacks against the police from happening. In the above statement, the Prime Minister seems to be more preoccupied with the idea of not offending Muslims Australians rather than with the security of all Australians and that of the police force. Faith makes peace push By LACHLAN MOORHEAD FAITH leaders are playing a pivotal role in tackling family violence. A number of these leaders, councillors and activists gathered at the Dandenong Council Chambers on Wednesday to launch the Family Violence Prevention Resource kit - the culmination of the Challenge Family Violence project. The challenge project is a three-year partnership between Casey, Cardinia and Greater Dandenong councils, with funding currently scheduled to finish at the end of 2015. The resource kit, entitled ‘Promoting Equality and Respect: An interfaith collaboration on preventing family violence’, includes fact sheets, faith perspectives, legal service, support contact numbers, and more. It was funded by the Department of Justice and Regulation and supported by Monash Health and the three councils. Joining Dandenong mayor Sean O’Reilly and Dandenong Interfaith development officer Helen Heath to talk to guests at the launch were a number of influential faith leaders including Father Jean Mawal from the Antiochian Orthodox Church of St Paul’s, Jasbir Singh Suropada from the Sikh Interfaith Council of Victoria, Suleyman Sahingoz from

upon to provide guidance and grassroots care to individuals. “That’s why collaborations can be so important, together we’ve developed a resource which will support our faith leaders in their discussions and actions as they seek to prevent and address the issue of family violence.” Dandenong community development officer Crystal Bruton, who was piv-
otal in putting together the resource kit, explained the importance of including the ‘faith perspectives’ section in the resource kit. “We invited the community faith and spiritual leaders who have contributed to this project to provide some references to religious texts or particular values that underpin their faith tradition,” she said. “And we’ve included them to show how particular faith traditions promote gender equality and promote respect towards women.” Ms Heath paid tribute to the community elders and volunteers for refusing to bury their heads in the sand in the face of such a confronting issue. “One of the things that the leaders here appreciated is working alongside each other, because it’s not easy talking about some of these issues and the challenges,” she said. “And we’re widely honoured that people acknowledge this project.” For more information about the kit, contact Greater Dandenong Council on 8571 1000, or visit www.greaterdandenong.com. Grants target native growth for revegetation THE Casey Council is opening its pockets for residents keen to improve local vegetation. The City of Casey’s Biodiversity Incentive Scheme Grants are again available, offering financial help for residents who undertake projects to enhance and improve native vegetation. Landowners can now apply for a grant up to $2000 to manage the native vegeta-
tion on their property. Casey mayor Mick Morland urged residents and business with “remnant vegetation”, or areas of land that could be revegetated, to apply. “A recent survey indicated that only six per cent of indigenous vegetation remains within the municipality, so the council has implemented a range of initiatives to increase native vegetation, in-
cluding linking patches of remnant vegetation across Casey,” he said. “As part of Council’s Biodiversity Enhancement Strategy, these grants are offered to help landowners undertake actions that will improve the extent and quality of native vegetation in Casey.” The grants may be provided for actions including putting up fencing to protect remnant vegetation, controlling nox-
ious and environmental weeds on private properties, revegetating land with indigenous plants or implementing measures to control pest animals - including red foxes, European rabbits and feral cats. A MAN allegedly found slumped behind the wheel of a stolen car in Cranbourne South has been refused bail. Robert Barden of Somerville struggled with police and demanded to see his family as he was led from his unsuccessful in-person bail hearing at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Monday 5 October. The court heard that Cranbourne police had found Barden inside the locked and running Holden Cruze sedan with allegedly false number plates earlier that day. Police informant Constable Allison Johnston alleged that when a “dazed” Barden got out of the car, a round of cartridge ammunition was found in the drivers-side door. A further search of the car uncovered cannabis in a plas-

order but hadn’t had “much support to do with my criminal history”. “I’ve had a drug problem since I was 15 years old and nothing’s been done about it.” Barden submitted he could be placed on the therapeutic CREDIT bail program, which would allow him to also care for an ailing close relative. Magistrate Julie O’Donnell said Barden’s re-offending while on a community corrections order - which included drug treatment and judicial monitoring - was “aggravating and concerning to the court”. She noted the applicant’s criminal history, which dated back to 2001, included “constant offending” this year. Barden was remanded in custody to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 26 October.

POLICE have taken CCTV footage from the Cranbourne Newsagency on High Street after a man wielding a machete stormed the store, stealing cash on Monday 5 October. Fleeing the premises on foot about 6.20am, the man got away with an amount of money from the register. Staff member of five years Eric Chong said it was shocking news to hear. “I think we just have to start being more mindful of the
people that are coming in,” Mr Chong said. Two staff members and a customer were inside the shop at 105 High Street, Cranbourne, when the incident occurred, however no-one was injured. Mr Chong said he couldn't recall such a brazen robbery occurring at the newsagency. After opening at 3am on Monday morning, the two staff members who witnessed the armed robbery have since gone home. Mr Chong was unaware of the amount of cash stolen by the
man, described as Caucasian and wearing a grey hooded top. Recent data from the Crime Statistics Agency has confirmed robbery is on the rise in Casey. Between July 2014 and June 2015 such offences increased 39 per cent, and local business owner Sam Abdulhak said he was worried. Owner of the Cranbourne Charcoal Chicken, located opposite the newsagency on High Street, Mr Abdulhak said, “it’s very dangerous now.” Anyone with information is urged to call 1800 333 000.

Karly’s career is plumb lucky By GEORGIA WESTGARTH LEARNING the ropes in a male-dominated trade, Karly Tapner-Gillies, of Clyde, is paving the way for young women in the plumbing industry. A first year apprentice, Karly will represent Clyde at the inaugural Plumbing and Fire Industry Awards in October. In her first year out of high school Karly scrapped the idea of pursuing a university degree in accounting and made the bold decision to become a plumber and she’s never looked back. “I knew I wanted to be a tradesperson, and plumbing stuck out to me because it was
a well-respected trade that’s always developing and one that’s recognised worldwide,” Karly said. “And I love it - it’s awesome.” The 18-year-old apprentice and footballer with the Melbourne University Women’s Football Club hopes getting shortlisted for the new awards will inspire other girls to consider plumbing as a career. “I don’t think many young girls know about the opportunities that exist in a plumbing career, or how welcoming the industry is. “It’s a great career for any-

Hooked on the climb up By GEORGIA WESTGARTH KEEN to make a difference, Danielle Kutchel from Berwick will be running up to the highest observation deck in the southern hemisphere next monthsomething she’d love to do every fortnight. The Eureka Climb brings thousands of Victorians of all different fitness levels together for a day of stepping to raise funds for disadvantaged youth and support services in the Asia Pacific region. A runner and keen stair climber, Danielle will be in the timed wave of runners and will conquer the 1642 steps for the second time on Sunday 15 November. “I’m a fanatical stair climber and I was inspired by the event last year and where the money went which is
why I’m doing it again,” Danielle explained. “I’m hoping to raise more money than I did last year- I’m setting the bar at $250, because I know a lot of people are doing it tough and can’t afford to donate, but every little bit counts.” Working in communications in Melbourne, Danielle said she saw a lot of homelessness and hoped the money she raised helped someone in a practical way. “In general, homelessness is going up and no-one should have to live like that. “Working in the CBD I see a lot of it, so with an event like this even though I don’t know the person the money will directly help, I know I have made a difference to their lives,” she said.
The 23-year-old climbs the Dandenong Ranges thousand steps every fortnight and runs in the Berwick Springs Park Run and loves the Eureka stair climb so much that she’s hooked. “I will definitely participate next year and the year after that, I’ll do it for as long as I can, until I fall down,” she laughed. One of the highest vertical races in the world, participants of the annual event have to make it up 88 levels but Danielle said she enjoys the climb. “You can get into a bit of a routine with your own exercise and when I got to the top last year, I told my parents that I’d love to climb the Eureka Tower every fortnight instead of thousand steps.” To donate towards Danielle’s climb visit www.eurekaclimb.com.au

The program was established in August last year to bring together Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander elders from Casey and surrounding suburbs to chat and create art. City of Casey Mayor Mick Morland said the exhibition was a wonderful way to celebrate the program’s success. “Participating in a local social group reduces the feeling of being disconnected and can assist you in forging new relationships, help re-establish old friendships and restore emotional balance,” he said. Councillor Morland said 14 people took part in Yarn and Art each week where they tried painting, mosaicking, wood burning, knitting and gardening. “This program not only provides our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander residents with an opportunity to learn new things but also supports the community to remain connected to their culture and one another,” he said. “Their artworks evoke story sharing and provide an insight into the diverse history of their lands, waters, families and traditions.”

Cr Morland said Joy Sellers joined the group for the social aspects despite not having “an artistic bone in her body”. “Joy now frequently paints and was recently asked to submit one of her pieces, titled Connection to Country, for the launch of this art space at Cranbourne Library and this piece has now sold,” he said. “Within one year, Joy went
from feeling socially disconnected to having a meaningful place to go to each week where she felt comfortable enough to pick up a paint brush and learn something new, felt valued, esteemed, cared for and happy.” Gathering of the Tribes will be on display at Cranbourne Library, 65 Berwick-Cranbourne Road, Cranbourne East, from Monday to Saturday until 31 October.

Obviously it is easiest to avoid developing these pre-cancers in the first place by wearing long sleeves and gloves outdoors. A NORMAL visit to the doctor turned out to be a life saving trip to the hospital which saved pregnant mum Shanae Taylor and her premature son Oliver. The Cranbourne mother of two could have been hours away from a seizure if her doctor hadn’t picked up the signs. “It wasn’t even a planned check-up I went to the doctors to get a letter to approve leave from work and my blood pressure was shockingly high, due to pre-eclampsia,” Ms Taylor said. At 29 weeks, baby Oliver was rushed into the world by caesarean birth due to the lifethreatening condition - something Ms Taylor describes as scary, foreign and worrying after naturally giving birth to her first child, Isabella, four years ago. “I made sure I was awake to experience some of it, I remember asking if I would hear him cry and they said they couldn’t promise that, but I heard a little cry - it felt like an out-of-body experience because it all went so fast,” Ms Taylor explained. “They held him up for a second and showed him to me and whisked him away and put him on life support - it was all really hard and I felt pregnancy grief because I knew what it was like after giving birth to Isabella.” The experience left Ms Taylor in an unexpected and terrifying situation - one that was made a lot easier with the help of the Life’s Little Treasures Foundation which supports families through a website, phone app and booklets in hospitals. Published by a foundation dedicated to supporting families of premature and sick babies, Ms Taylor said the booklets were most helpful during such an awful experience.
Oliver in his incubator after his premature birth with big sister Isabella by his side. “I used many things such as a bible over that period but the Life’s Little Treasures booklet had a lot of information relating to other peoples stories,” she explained. After finding some support through the foundation Ms Taylor said getting involved in the charity since Oliver’s ordeal was very important to her. “Oliver was in hospital for about 10 and a half weeks he came home two days before his due date because he had two brain haemorrhages, a hole in his heart and a heart murmur, an inguinal hernia which he had repaired and blood transfusions and oxygen support,” she said. “If I didn’t have the support around me from my own family I would have reached out to the foundation more and I know some people don’t have that.”
The Taylor family will be walking in the foundations ‘Walk for Prems’ this October to raise money for the organisation. “We have made a team called Oliver’s Army and the money raised will go towards providing more hospitals with booklets and giving families things like fuel vouchers because there’s so much driving back and forth to feed and visit after the birth,” Ms Taylor explained. Now on the mend, baby Oliver will be pushed around Albert Park Lake in his pram on Sunday 25 October for the foundation that supported his mum during his very first days. Silverbacks heat up the action By RUSSELL BENNETT THE imposing force of the Pakenham Silverbacks’ defense was awe-inspiring on Sunday in a thrilling 22-20 win over local rivals, the Berwick Miners at Rawling Field in Endeavour Hills. The Gridiron Victoria junior clash gave local fans the opportunity to see the region’s best young talent in action, and the intensity of the contest lived up to the blistering heat of the day. Miners running back Ghok Yien and quarterback Justin Tchia combined to cause the Silverbacks all sorts of early concerns, with Yien crossing for the first touchdown of the game before a subsequent two-point conversion. Pakenham’s offense struggled to find any real rhythm for much of the first half, but a stunning, video game-like play from quarterback Lee Belton shortly before the main break seemed to spark the side into life. Kipa Letele forced a fumble, which Jaxson Mahy returned to open the Silverbacks’ account.
Belton later had a running quarterback keep that put the Silverbacks on top, while Chevy Edwards returned an interception that put Pakenham further in front. But the Miners weren’t done with yet, with fourth quarter touchdowns to Fawlo Apai and another to Yien bringing the margin back to within two points before the Silverbacks wound the clock down to ice the game. Mahy and Edwards were nothing short of sensational on the defensive end all game. After the contest, Silverbacks coach Leed Wesolowski was full of praise for his young side - which now moves to 2-2 on the season. “Chevy is a really special player,” he said. “He can do it all. He’s good at reading the flight of the ball and providing good coverage - it’s as tight as anything. “He’s good at outside linebacker too. He contains the run and gets to the quarterback.” The Silverbacks had their early struggles on the offensive end - particularly when it
came to fumbles, which have been a recurring theme over the past couple of weeks - but in the second half they came into their own, led by Belton with a series of running plays. The local rivalry between the two sides is heightened even more given a few of the Silverbacks’ youngsters are former Miners players, and Wesolowski is pleased with their progression. “We seem to be coming out for every game either fast, or really slow and it could take us a while but the defense has been on song for the past three games. “The o-line has done really well too - they did a lot of work with Richie Howlett this week on their run blocking and staying low. They were huge for us in the second half, and of course the defense was outstanding. Tom (Trimble) does a great job with them.” The Silverbacks will this Sunday head to DR Atkinson Reserve in Reservoir to take on the Northern Raiders from 10.30am.

Hunters down Pumas By JARROD POTTER SUNDAY was not a fun day for Pakenham Pumas Baseball Club in its inaugural Victorian Summer Baseball League (VSBL) clash. The Pumas were belted about the diamond by Ormond in a Division 3 season-opening 2-13 loss. Pakenham’s lead-off hitters impressed as coach Shaun Fahy and import James Mills found the bases consistently - including Fahy finding his way home off a Mills’ double in the third innings. The other run came from a group effort to get Mills in late in the clash, but outside of those brief glimpses of potential, the roster struggled. Pakenham’s starting pitcher Martin Kennedy was relieved in the second innings as four runs went into the Ormond ledger in the first. The Pumas’ relief pitcher Simon Ferris stemmed the flow of runs, but as the scores piled on again late in the clash, the coach Fahy came in to finish off the last two innings in the 11-run loss. Unearned runs, missed opportunities and a number of near-miss doubleplays cost Pakenham heavily, with runs piling up after the outs could have ended many of Ormond’s at-bat chances. The Hunters proved too strong in the end to leave Pakenham to pick up the pieces after a tough start to life in VSBL Division 3 and coach Fahy thought the side’s errors were uncustomary and won’t be repeated. “Preparations seemed to go pretty good, but unfortunately our mental aptitude on the day wasn’t where I wanted it to be,” Fahy said. “Our pitching at the start of the game hurt us a fair bit - too many wild pitches, too many walks, which, in turn, scored runs on hits and a lot of their runs were unearned runs. “With the score being 13-2, it was reflected in the way we play and not by the standard we want to play.” Mills backed up his solid work with the bat also in the field as the primary pitcher has enjoyed his switch into the in-field, roaming shortstop and second

base and affecting a number of outs. Fahy said Mills’ pitching power will be used in closer contests, but for now his aim was to work. “The theory with James is that we hope to give him some time trying out with the Aces - if it was a close game coming into the last innings or two James would come in at the end,” Fahy said. “May get a start in two weeks against Mulgrave - get him some innings in - but the primary use of James throughout the season will be at shortstop and throwing at the last to close out games if we’re ahead.” Pakenham now gets to roll out the welcome mat to Toomuc Reserve when it hosts St Kilda for its inaugural summer home game and Fahy was
clear on the side’s intent to defend the home field. “I’m expecting a lot better effort our bats were definitely nowhere near on Sunday, but we’re expecting that to definitely change.” Fahy said. “Our home turf we’re pretty comfortable there, so I’m expecting pretty much all our home games will be wins as we don’t like losing in our own house.” The Pumas’ seconds didn’t have it any better against the Hunters; similarly routed 2-16 in a tough debut for the south easterners and the thirds were pummelled 0-20 by Chelsea B in Division 4 South. Berwick City started its season with a 6-4 win over Malvern in Division 2 and will host Bonbeach on Saturday.
Torpedo wins barrel kick-off FOOTBALL journeyman Dane Roy had his kicking boots on Saturday when he barrelled his way to victory in the Carlton United Breweries/AFL Barrel kick at the MCG. While most people had their feet up on Grand Final day, Roy had his torping his way towards the win in the long-kicking competition. Having done the local football laps in recent years - playing for Bunyip, Gippsland Power, Bendigo Bombers, Kangaroo Flat, ROC, Pakenham and Richmond Centrals - Roy (or DRoy as he is known) started the competition in June. He had to knock off three other competitors then again in August and September, earning him a ticket to kick it at the grand final, one of the curtain-raiser bits of entertainment before the Hawthorn v West Coast clash. Season jumps to a great start

Not to be outdone, Roy pushed past nerves with his last kick to barrel the triumphant torpedo a whopping 73 metres. The winning prize was $5000 for the player, $5000 for his club, a trip to New Orleans for a week-long mentoring program by an ex-NFL punter and a year-long scholarship with ProKick Australia.
PAKENHAM Little Athletics Centre's season started off with an awesome day on Saturday. Considering it was the day of the AFL Grand Final, the club had a great turnout with 96 registered athletes this season so far, 30 of them new registered athletes. While the weather warmed up quickly and a gusty wind blowing, it didn’t stop the young ones from having fun, running, jumping, throwing and enjoying the first official day of the season. Two new records have already been placed on the first opening day with young athletes Madison (U10) and Xavier (U7) breaking club records on the morning. Madison threw her personal best in shotput and Xavier ran his fastest in the 100m. Well done to both athletes on achieving such great results on the first day back. The event is on at Melbourne’s Royal Exhibition Building from October 23-25 Cheeky and sporty - the Mini John Cooper Works. Grey coloured spats around the wheel arches look great. Our car came in standout orange and black and drew plenty of admiring looks from Mini enthusiasts. Sports seats give good side grip but aren’t so deep as to make entry and exit a pain. Should you not want to do any hard track work you may care to select seats with shallower bolsters. All-new JCW Mini uses a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol en-
gine with 170 kW of power and 320 Nm of torque. Peak torque runs all the way across the engine’s range from 1250 rpm to 4800 revs, with a plenty of punch still there right through the fives. Our test car had a six-speed automatic transmission. Sixspeed manuals haven’t come off the boat yet, but are due any day. Paddle shifters do give full control over gear changes in the auto.

A few weeks back we enjoyed a great day at Phillip Island thrashing around in a series of brightly coloured gen-three Mini JCWs. Now we have come back to reality having road tested one for a week on our home turf on the Gold Coast - traffic, speed cameras, rough and ready roads, the full catastrophe.
