More snow on the way The snow has not yet fully melted on the slopes at Mount Hotham, but already the ski resort is looking forward to a huge season next year with $4 milllion worth of new snow-making infrastructure. FOR MORE, TURN TO PAGE 8
Family crime crisis By ERIN SOMERVILLE FAMILY violence rates have soared in Wodonga in the past five years, latest crime figures show. The Crime Statistics Agency released figures on Thursday showing family violence had jumped more than 25 per cent in Wodonga in the last year alone. The annual trend of increased reported family violence has continued in Wodonga for the past five years. Some 394 incidents were reported in the year to June 2011, while 867 incidents were reported in the year to June 2015 - a jump of 120 per cent. The figures include family violence incidents, interfamilial-related sexual offences, and child abuse reported to police. Each family incident statistic may involve one or more affected family members or other parties. The rise of family violence in Wodonga looks dire in relation to the rest of the state when compared on a per 100,000 people incident rate basis. In the 12 months to June 2015, Wodonga LGA sat in seventh spot for the highest number of family incidents reported across the state behind other regional areas like Swan Hill, Mildura, and Horsham. The statistics also show Wodonga had the sixth highest increase in family incidents of the state’s 79 LGAs based on a per 100,000 basis that year. The data in the year to June 2015 shows females aged between 25 and 29 were the most common victims of family violence of their sex, while the most common victims for men were aged between 40-44. Albury Wodonga News Weekly made multiple requests for comment from Wodonga Police, but did not receive a response.
Proving to be a place for young and old alike, MAMA got the city talking when the doors to the region’s new art museum opened on Friday. Promising to be exciting, brazen, beautiful, controversial, and loud, MAMA celebrations carried on over the weekend as the city welcomed its new $10 million jewel of the CBD. Here, Lachlan Plain lifts his son Quill Powell-Plain up for a better view. For the full details on the official Picture: ADAM WILSON opening, turn to page 3. 145160

Ryan Gregory, Jodie Tiernan, Steph Carroll, and Kirby Quinn raise a stein to Oktoberfest celebrations. 145231
Picture: ERIN SOMERVILLE
Time for a cultural refresher in beer By ERIN SOMERVILLE PROST! As the mercury rises, the dirndls and lederhosen will be coming out to play as Beer DeLuxe gears up to host their first Oktoberfest. The Bavarian-inspired event will kick off from noon on 17 October, giving residents a reason to down
some steins for a great cause. Beer DeLuxe will be using Oktoberfest as an opportunity to raise funds for the Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre, with Hume Rotarians donating sale proceeds from their bratwurst with sauerkraut, sausages, and giant pretzels to the cause.
The event aims to remain true to the Oktoberfest roots, with two of the Big Six Oktoberfestbiers that have been on tap at the Munich event since 1818 also being poured out cold right here in Albury, including the Haffbrau lager and Paulaner. There will also be a live oompah band, Hoffbass, providing live entertainment.
Those who dress in traditional Oktoberfest attire will also receive a free stein. “Beer Deluxe Albury will be giving it all they’ve got to make this day a sensational annual event, celebrating the Largest Volksfest (People’s Fair) in the world,” spokesperson Jodie Tiernan said.

MAMA does it in style By ERIN SOMERVILLE
Albury mayor Henk van de Ven addresses the Albury public at MAMA's opening. 145142 Picture: ADAM WILSON
WITH a blast of confetti canons and jig from live puppets, MAMA officially opened its doors to an eager city on Friday morning. The opening celebrations which shut down Dean Street was met with an announcement that the Federal Government will invest $300,000 in Albury’s new $10.5 million regional art museum. Federal Farrer MP Sussan Ley said the donation recognised the contribution of the former Albury-Wodonga Development Corporation (19742014) to the social, cultural and economic development of the border region. “AlburyCity approached our government with the opportunity to retain and recognise a sizable collection of corporation memorabilia and MAMA provides the perfect location for
future exhibitions and storage,” Ms Ley said. “This $300k donation is in addition to the Commonwealth’s $3.5 million funding for the MAMA redevelopment and allows AlburyCity to permanently acknowledge, commemorate and celebrate our city’s unique period as inland Australia’s national growth centre.” Albury mayor Henk van de Ven said MAMA and AlburyCity staff had “nailed it”, in his address to the public on Friday morning. “It’s about rebirth, transitioning, and maturity,” he stated. “(Albury’s forebears) would be proud of what we have achieved, I’m sure.” Cr van de Van said the support MAMA has received by the city has been unprecedented, with Members of MAMA (MoMAMA) membership
reaching 300, and $1.3 million in philanthropic donations being received. ‘Individuals, businesses, and family will all be a part of this iconic place.” More than 1400 free tickets had been booked for the public to go inside MAMA on Friday’s opening day and Saturday. MAMA’s opening exhibition is Wiradjuri Ngurambanggu (On Wiradjuri Country) and features the work of five leading contemporary Indigenous artists Jonathan Jones, Brook Andrew, Lorraine ConnellyNorthey, Karla Dickens and Nicole Foreshew. Jobs program is changing lives By ERIN SOMERVILLE FOR 20-year-old Shannon Gittus, just two days of training a week with the Re-engagement Pathways Program (RAP) is enough to make a big change in his life. Having become disengaged following his younger years in the education system, Mr Gittus is now eager to learn new skills through the RAP program to help support his family and provide himself with a brighter future. “The benefits I see in this is you come out with really good qualifications,” he said. “You get a forklift licence, I’m working on my VCAL (Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning), and a whitecard.
“It’s really helpful because before this I had no qualifications and wouldn’t be looked at for jobs.” The program designed for vulnerable young males aged between 1519 is supported by Bing Lee, Junction Support Services, and Wodonga TAFE to help tackle the youth unemployment problem, that hit 17.2 per cent in Albury Wodonga in February 2015 - significantly higher than the national average of 13.9 per cent. This week, Bing Lee and Junction Support Services announced the inclusion of an education scholarship as part of RAP. The scholarship will give students practical work placement with Bing Lee, providing industry experience and an opportunity to create a job network.
The scholarship is expected to encourage RAP participants to stay motivated and future-focused. Junction Support Services youth services manager Jamie Brown said the initiative was already working. “Attendance and course satisfaction rates are at an all-time high in comparison to when the boys were at school, and we have also seen a reduction in criminal activity. “Our partnership with Bing Lee has enabled us to provide practical work experience opportunities and mentoring to participants. This in itself is invaluable.” Wodonga TAFE Warehousing technical instructor Peter Bluck said investment in youth was vital to tackle the youth unemployment issue. The program is designed to very

Mann on a feat of feet By ERIN SOMERVILLE
Eyes on fire By ERIN SOMERVILLE FIREFIGHTERS are hoping for some October rainfall to prevent the bushfire season from being extended. September had just seven days of rainfall, with a total of 27.4mm being recorded at the Bureau of Meteorology’s Albury station at airport for the month. Thursday 3 September was the wettest day and accounted for most of the month’s rainfall, with 23mm being recorded. This falls far behind the month’s expected average of 63.8mm. While conditions on the Border are still green, Albury’s
NSW Rural Fire Service community safety officer Julie Bartlett said October rain would help out firefighters before the upcoming summer - with expected El Nino conditions. Currently, Albury’s bushfire danger period begins on 1 November, but that could change with temperatures expected to quickly soar from the weekend. “Really if we don’t see any rain we may bring (the bushfire danger period) back a week earlier.” The team says the fire safety message is important with the upcoming October long weekend. Campers and those barbecu-
ing are reminded to be vigilant with their fires. “For campfires, make sure there is a good clearance around them, nothing is overhanging, and never leave them alone. “All you need is just a gust of wind for the embers to pick up.” Residents are reminded to test their barbecues by running their gas lines through hot soapy water to ensure there are no leaks, and making sure the gas bottle have not expired. Now is also the time to start preparing for bushfire season. Information on how to Plan and Prepare is online at www. rfs.nsw.gov.au

SORE legs and feet aren’t stopping the Border’s Andrew Mann, who is making his way on foot from Wodonga to Melbourne to help locals battling cystic fibrosis. The Wendy Beard Walk for Cystic Fibrosis, which spans over 300km, was inspired when Mr Mann saw one of his close friends struggling to get on top of the disease. “My friend was having a really tough time,” Mr Mann said. “We went to visit him in Melbourne where he was receiving treatment in a little room away from family and he was really battling. “I had never seen him that flat before.” It was at this moment that Mr Mann decided he wanted to help improve treatment options for the many cystic fibrosis sufferers on the Border who regularly had to travel for treatment. As a result, Border Cystic Fibrosis and Healthfocus Physiotherapy have teamed up to create a health program to benefit sufferers. Funds raised by Mr Mann will go towards this program, which sees Health Focus staff trained to cater to cystic fibrosis needs through physiotherapy. “They need the physiotherapy to keep clear their lungs and keep their lung capacity up.” People with CF develop an abnormal amount of excessively thick and sticky mucus

Business rues holiday cost By ERIN SOMERVILLE WODONGA businesses were left up to 40 per cent out of pocket on Friday’s inaugural AFL Grand Final Public Holiday, according to the Wodonga Chamber of Commerce. “We had a little straw poll and the anecdotal evidence shows most business were 30 to 40 per cent down on the day,” Wodonga Chamber of Commerce business manager Bernie Squire said. “That’s not necessarily in terms of business, but in terms of the whole running costs of the day.” Many businesses reported Friday morning started off busy, but business declined quickly in the afternoon. Mr Squire said the new public holiday had not been well received by Border communities right along the Murray, and had put many em-
ployers under pressure. “Many worked with skeleton staff. “Some still had to pay full-time workers for the day off, and casuals missed out on a day’s pay.” It wasn’t all bad news for retailers, though. A handful of business gained new customers who had travelled across the Border to support the Wodonga shops on the public holiday. Wodonga’s next public holiday will be the Wodonga Gold Cup holiday on 27 November, in lieu of Melbourne Cup Day. Mr Squire said the race day holiday was typically better received by employers than Friday’s public holiday, as it had a local emphasis and had simply replaced a holiday that was already on the Victorian calendar rather than introduced as a new one.

Ramp-age: ‘redneck’ taggers cop a spray By ERIN SOMERVILLE ALBURY mayor Henk van de Ven has labelled those responsible for spraypainting racist slurs on boat ramp signs at Bowna Waters Reserve as “rednecks”. The racist graffiti, which was sprawled across the reserve’s two boat ramp signs, was reported to Albury Wodonga News Weekly by concerned residents on Wednesday morning. While the boat ramp is controlled by Roads and Maritime Services, Cr van de
Ven condemned vandalism and racist behaviour occurring in the Albury area. “I think you’ll always get a group of rednecks in this area that are very difficult to control,” he said. “As far as the racist comments are concerned, they need to go have a good hard look at themselves.” The incident occurred following Monday night’s council meeting, where outgoing mayor Kevin Mack encouraged the city to continue taking a stance against
the city’s graffiti problem. “On another front, I continue to advocate for stakeholders to own the graffiti problem across our city and over the past six months we have successfully held stakeholder consultations which have had positive responses,” Cr Mack said in his final mayoral minute. “In the near future a full audit of the entire city will be conducted by graffiti audit teams and this will allow us to tackle the problem holistically, identify the responsible agencies and develop
strategies to deal with it both reactively and proactively.” New mayor Henk van de Ven said he also took a “zero tolerance” approach to graffiti. The cost to AlburyCity for the removal of graffiti from council infrastructure was $136,772 in 2014/15. This was up from $75,530 in 2013/14. Earlier this year the city spend around $10,000 on easy-clean artistic vinyl wraps to cover graffiti hotspots around the city.
WHAT a turn-up for the books, when the Albury council warns some rightwing group not to cast their shadows in Albury as they have done in Bendigo against mosques being built. This same council dived for cover when asked to intervene in the Englehardt abortion clinic affair. Albury councillor David Thurley and the Albury mayor Kevin Mack were very quick in showing support for the Muslim community and showing everybody just how much they weren’t ‘racist’ and saying things they thought a minority group wished to hear. It makes me ashamed to be an Australian and the tradition keeps on keeping on. There seems to be two laws; one against lawful protest and another for unlawful hindrance and obstruction by ‘bead mumblers’. There is one thing that’s as sure as the day is long: if you intend on backing some horse in a race, you look carefully at the form and if the form whenever the horse has raced looks suspect, you do not waste your time and money on it. And some nationalities are the same. Backers beware, but stand up to be counted after. Bill Whitham, Tallangatta.

THE Mt Hotham Skiing Company has poured $4.4 million into expanding its snowmaking to ensure the ski resort is ‘snow sure’ for future seasons. The announcement was shortly after Hotham’s closing weekend, with the new multimillion infrastructure set to be installed by the 2016 season. The resort will be using 18 state-of-the-art Techno-Aplin fan guns to boost their snowmaking capabilities. The expanded snowmaking will cover more trails on Heavenly Valley, the intermediate terrain serviced by the Roadrunner lift, and the Beginner terrain in the Summit area.
“This is the single biggest investment in snowmaking at Hotham since we partnered with government and the Mt Hotham Alpine Resort Management Board in 2008 to install the Loch snowmaking dam, Belinda Trembath said. “The expanded snowmaking will mean Hotham is now ‘snow-sure’ for more of the season. “We’ll be able to open more terrain earlier each season and keep more terrain open well into Spring. The investment also means families can be guaranteed snow during the June and July school holidays. Hotham’s general manager of operations Len Dobell will
be managing the project over summer. “Those beautiful bright yellow snowmaking machines are just the tip of the iceberg, Mr Dobell said. “A lot of the magic of the new system will happen underground and behind the scenes, with a massive expansion of our pumping capacity and snowmaking pipelines, and a fully automated control system to take advantage of every possible snowmaking opportunity. The project will be completed by 1 June next year, and the expanded system will be fully operational by the opening of the 2016 Snow Season on 11 June.

It’s high tea at Riverwood By ERIN SOMERVILLE RIVERWOOD was abuzz on Thursday afternoon as the village residents and staff sat down to a delicious high tea to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the International Day of Older Persons. The International Day of Older Persons is celebrated around the world to acknowledge the importance of pro-actively building a community that is inclusive of people over the age of 60, with the theme ‘60+ Counts’. The residents at Riverwood were joined by Member for Albury Greg Aplin, Allity representative Ms Robyn Lynch, Hossacks Funeral Services Elizabeth Gaylard, and Gardens Medical Centre representative Dr Victor Carraffa, for a huge afternoon tea to celebrate ‘60+ Counts’. “2015 marks the 25th year of this annual day of awareness and recognition led by the United Nations,” Riverwood sales manager Wayne Matsinos said in his address on Thursday. “For Allity, we believe there is nothing more important than recognising the wisdom and heritage of our community living in aged care and retirement living, appreciating our family and friends of this generation, and using this day to share history and aspire for a future of inclusiveness.” Mr Matsinos also spoke about the importance of well-planned cities playing an important role in the life of older persons, with six out of 10 people in the world expected to reside in urban areas by 2030. “Simply put, these trends offer older persons prospects for improving their quality of life. “Well-planned cities are more likely to provide income generating and education opportunities, in addition to housing and urban environments that are more accessible and safe for older persons, including the incorporation of age-friendly feature in public facilities.
“This includes access to affordable, reliable, safe, and physically accessible transportation, which is one of the cornerstones of older participation, independence, and social inclusion.” The celebration comes as Riverwood looks back on a successful year, welcoming new residents and continuing to make its mark as a topquality lifestyle village luring in residents from across the country.

“To make the most of our surrounds, we’ve recently launched walking groups for residents every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday in collaboration with The Heart Foundation.” All open day guests will go into the draw to win a garden hamper, as well as an additional draw for all attendees who RSVP by 16 October 2015 to Megan Collins on 0459 955 122. The Active Lifestyle Estates model is unique in that buyers purchase a new, state-of-the-art manufactured home and lease, rather than own the land, eliminating the need to pay stamp duty, entry and exit fees and council rates. Easy to love Murray Gardens By ERIN SOMERVILLE FOR the Kondacs, it was easy for the family of eight to become part of the community at Murray Gardens. Karl and Jana Kondacs, both born in the former Czechoslovakia, have had a long journey to become the happy and friendly gardeners that keep Murray Gardens looking so appealing throughout the year. Karl moved with his family as a young child to Germany to seek refuge after his engineer father spoke out against a communist leader. It was there in Germany that he grew up, and turned a passion for nature into a career. “I always had a love for nature, so I went to Agriculture Tech College in Germany.” He later took up work keeping the gardens of Stuttgart tidy and healthy. After Karl and Jana met, they started their large family, which now includes three daughters and three sons. The couple were eager for their family to see the world, and so went travelling. “So we came to Australia as tourists and from the first moment we found a love for this country. “It’s a beautiful country and we want to build a future here for our children.” Through the help of friends, the family emigrated to Australia and made Albury their home three years ago. They found work at Murray Gardens, and love working for the friendly staff and the happy community the village hosts.

friendly than the German people,” they laughed. “German people are very critical, Australian people are very tolerant. We are very happy with (Murray Gardens co-managers) Chiq and Anne, everyone is very friendly and good to us.”
The family has since called Australian home, selling their house in Germany and buying a 14-acre property with sheep, chickens, and plenty of space for their children to roam. They even have welcomed a new Australian son-in-law into the family,

Men making right moves MINISTER for Ageing in New South Wales John Ajaka MLC will join forces with national industry body Exercise and Sports Science Australia to officially launch a national website this week aimed at getting Australian men off the couch. Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA) chief executive officer Anita Hobson-Powell said the Real Men Move website had been created to inspire Australian men to increase their participa-

tion in physical activity and provide personalised exercise programs for men of all fitness levels. “The harsh reality is that the number of Australian adult males who are sedentary has risen from 34 per cent in 2004-’05 to over 40 per cent today and 75 per cent of Australian males aged 25 and over are now overweight or obese,” Ms Hobson-Powell said. “We’re seeing a trend where physical activity levels tend to drop significantly once males reach 45, so the Real Men Move website will provide practical tips for motivating Australian men in this age group to take responsibility for their health and make some key lifestyle changes.” Ms Hobson-Powell said the website would also offer an ‘ask an expert’ section and resources for the partners and friends of inactive men to assist them in encouraging their loved ones to kick start an exercise regime. “Sometimes, all it takes is a push in the right direction and some encouragement from their family and friends for people to recognise the importance of getting fit and starting exercising,” Ms Hobson-Powell said. “It is after all the loved ones who end up being significantly impacted by the potentially lifechanging consequences of leading a sedentary life.” “Groups of men can also make use of the new website if they find the idea of exercising in a group setting more appealing, with plenty of tips and resources available for entire workplaces and organisations.” Ms Hobson-Powell said, globally men were 50 per cent more likely to die between the ages of 15 and 60 than women, and on average, women
lived almost five years longer than men. “We know that coronary heart disease was the leading cause of death in males aged 25 and over in 2010, and that the most common chronic diseases among males aged 25 and over is currently cardiovascular disease.” “These statistics are very concerning and indicate that action needs to be taken now to minimise the risk of existing and future generations developing these conditions by simply following the footsteps of their male role models.” “Physical inactivity is a major risk factor for a range of conditions ranging from cancer and lung disease, right through to diabetes and osteoporosis, so the sooner Australian men start to implement a regular physical activity regime, the more likely they are to stay healthy and extend their life expectancy.” “The site also serves as a good reminder that exercise should be a regular occurrence, so while someone may take part in a social activity like golf or go for a cycle once a week, this alone does not meet their recommended weekly physical activity requirements.” Ms Hobson-Powell said some of the common reasons for high levels of sedentary behaviour among men included time constraints, uncertainty regarding how to start an exercise program,
embarrassment about their current fitness level and concerns about their body starting to let them down with age. “Each of these barriers to physical activity can be overcome, and we recommend that Australian men visit the Real Men Move website for more information, and also use this resource to get in touch with an accredited exercise physiologist who can create a custom exercise program to suit their needs,” Ms Hobson-Powell said. The New South Wales Government has contributed funding to support the Real Men Move website and campaign. To access the website, log on to www.realmenmove.org.au. Fast facts Only 44.6 per cent of Australian men are sufficiently active The 55+ age group is the least active cohort of Australian men On average, women live longer than men. The gap in life expectancy is almost five years The proportion of males aged 25 and over carrying excess weight has increased from 69 per cent in 1995 to 75 per cent in 2011-’12 Physical inactivity is a major risk factor for conditions like coronary heart disease, cardiovascular disease, cancer and diabetes.

Dealing with dementia Amplify’s offer for WITH one Australian being diagnosed with dementia and Alzheimer’s every six minutes, Generations Aged Care Advice financial adviser Megan McGrath met with Bupa Aged Care Wodonga care manager Kristen Simpson to discuss the disease that is affecting so many families. “It does not discriminate,” Ms Simpson said. “It can affect anyone from any socio-economic level.” Early onset dementia affects those as young as 40, the disease is becoming a national concern with predictions that more and more people will soon be diagnosed as the population ages. Often, the symptoms of dementia can go unnoticed for a long time. Both the sufferer and family can often dismiss the signs as simply forgetfulness, stress, or just old age. As the disease worsens, many families need to consider partial or full-time care to look after their loved one. “They can live at home for a period of time, but as the disease progresses, they need that greater support. “They need somewhere they are safe and secure.” Ms Simpson said their team at BUPA endeavoured to understand the background of their patients in order to work with their long-term memory to help provide better care. “It helps if we know if they love music, or gardening, and we know to put that in their care plan.” From music of the past, images
birthday By ERIN SOMERVILLE THIS month, the friendly staff at Amplify Hearing and Diagnostics would like to take the time to thank their customers for their loyalty and support over the past two years. To celebrate turning two, Amplify has a very special birthday offer: simply mention this ad to receive 10 per cent off any hearing aid or battery purchases throughout the month of October. While Amplify has only been on the Border for two years, it has quickly established itself as a community favourite for all things hearing. They are local and independent, and happy to be part of such a wonderful community. The team offers a huge range of services, from adult and child screening and diagnostic hearing tests, hearing aid assessments and prescriptions, “take home” hearing aid trials and fittings, and custom-made moulds for swimming, music, and noise-reduction. Amplify can also help with employment audiograms, rehabilitation and advice, and NSW and Victorian Workers Compensation. They have also recently introduced the Bone Conduction implant (BAHA) candidacy assessment and fitting services in their Albury clinic, in conjunction with local ENT surgeons and Cochlear. This service was previously not available in the region. Customers enjoy access to the latest technology from a variety of manufacturers in the industry to give them the best results for all their hearing needs. Staff ensure the practice is always up-to-date with the latest news and technology, through regular participation in industry conferences, webinars, and seminars to further enhance their knowledge and capabilities. Bupa general manager Linda Hudec, Generations adviser Megan McGrath, and Bupa care manager Picture: ERIN SOMERVILLE Kristen Simpson talk about caring for dementia. 145153 and posters of the golden days of music and Hollywood, or photos of the local region, all little elements can help the staff at Bupa Aged Care Wodonga put their residents at ease. “Our staff have a Personal Best program which encourages them to go that little bit further”. “It’s lovely to be able to create those memories.” “If we don’t know their background, we have nothing to go on.”
Without the small and personal connections and understanding, dealing with dementia can be difficult and frustrating for both carers and the sufferer. While the disease affecting every person and every family differently, it is important to do thorough research before putting a loved one into permanent care. It is important to consider both present and future requirements in deciding on the best home.
“Generations Aged Care Advice does not provide assistance in helping work out which home is best, but we can certainly assist with helping families understand the costs involved and how moving into care might affect Centrelink entitlements,” Ms McGrath said. With thorough planning and advice before the event, a move to permanent care can be more easily managed and less stressful for you and your loved one.

Mental Health Week

Reach out to friends MINISTER for Health Sussan Ley has encouraged all Australians to reach out to friends and family this Mental Health Week (2-10 October), and has foreshadowed significant structural reform of the mental health system. Ms Ley said following the recommendations by the National Mental Health Commission’s review of mental health services, a mental health Expert Reference Group was established, and had now presented their implementation plan. “I have received the Expert Reference Group’s implementation plan, and am now finalising a significant reform package that will better support Australians to receive the most appropriate mental health care first time, when and where they need it,” Ms Ley said. “I will announce the Turnbull Government’s plans for mental health reform by the end of the year as we work to build the best system possible for Australian patients.” Ms Ley said the National Mental Health Commission’s review into existing mental health programs and services found it to be “fragmented, disjointed and tragically people continue to fall through the cracks.” “From this review, it was clear that we needed to re-think our approach to mental health, and change the focus from a service-centred approach to one

Beat your feet to this sweet treat By ERIN SOMERVILLE IT WASN’T until Natasha Barber was raising her first child that she noticed a gap in the market for comfortable, highquality footwear for children. It didn’t take long before her brainchild ‘Skeanie Shoes’ was born. It is a business journey that Ms Barber is fervent about, but with a background in finance and IT, is not a career path she expected to take. With determination and passion, her hard work is paying off with the popular ‘Skeanie Shoes’ now being snapped up on an international stage. With a focus on foot health, the brand is an Associate Partner of The Australian Podiatry Association, and American Podiatric Medical Association approved.
“I started the brand in 2005, when I had my son and could not find pre-walkers in Australia for him,” she said. “I learnt about the benefits and how ill-fitting shoes can damage children’s feet.” From pre-walkers, the brand has quickly expanded to include an array of light and flexible shoes with natural cotton and leather materials for children aged up to five. From classic Mary-Jane styles, to gumboots, and loafers, ‘Skeanie Shoes’ has something to keep all children looking stylish while protecting their developing feet. ‘We don’t change the styles often, and they are designs that won’t date.” Ms Barber said paediatric health was something that was often overlooked by parents and
in pre-natal education.“When a child is born their foot is just cartilage, the bones form over time. “It’s important for the foot to have no restrictions. “People aren’t aware of the damage poor quality shoes can cause.” ‘Skeanie Shoes’ is popular with Australian parents, and now the USA and Singapore are jumping on board to take advantage of the juvenile footwear revolution. Last week, ‘Skeanie Shoes’ was announced as a finalist in the Online Sales Category for the Premier’s new Export Awards - further info can be found at http://www.export.org. au/eca/awards/premier-nswexport-awards/intro To explore the full range, visit www.skeanie.com.au

depression, self-harm and suicide. The landmark ‘Second Australian Child and Adolescent survey of Mental Health and Well-Being’ found one in seven children and young people experienced a mental disorder in the previous 12 months - the equivalent of 560,000 young Australians. However, in positive news, the number of young Australians seeking help doubled compared with 15 years ago, and positive activities such as sports, exercise and healthy eating are now beating alcohol, drugs and smoking as the preferred way to handle mental health issues for the majority of teens. “As a parent it’s heartbreaking to see these prevalent stories of depression, anxiety, self-harm and suicidal tendencies among our young people, let alone as Health Minister,” Ms Ley said. “However, when I see figures showing the majority of young people are now looking to join a sports team or activity, talk to a friend, or improve their diet to address mental health issues instead of turning to drugs, smoking or alcohol, that makes me immensely proud. “There’s no doubt raising awareness is only half the battle - we need positive outcomes as well - but surveys such as this spur me on to ensure we get this current mental health reform right first time.”

where services are organised around the needs of the person,” Ms Ley said. “This is why we have sought advice from the Mental Health Expert Reference Group on how best to translate the National Mental Health Commission’s recommendations into an implementation plan to take the report from paper to policy. “The Expert Reference Group has presented its report to government and I expect to announce the details of what this will entail before the end of 2015.” Ms Ley said this year’s Mental Health Week theme was Mental Health begins with me, and encouraged all Australians to take part and make a mental health promise to themselves. “Mental Health Week is held annually to raise awareness of mental health in the community, reduce the stigma associated with mental ill-health, and most importantly, to encourage help-seeking behaviour,” Ms Ley said. “Good general health and well-being is important for mental health, and this year people are being encouraged to write a mental health promise to themselves that is achievable, such as eating more healthy meals or getting more sleep.” Earlier this year, Ms Ley released the largest ever national survey of youth mental health of its kind and it painted a confronting picture around teenage

The Martian needs an Alien The Martian (M) Starring: Matt Damon, Kristen Wiig, Jeff Daniels THE Martian brought something out of me that I never thought would happen. I walked out halfway through and bought a second choc-top. It was an unprecedented move, but I really needed something to help while away the hours between start and merciful finish. Don’t get me wrong, everything about The Martian is done well. It has good actors, an adequate plot and it looks just super. So why did the story of an astronaut abandoned on Mars leave me and my posse feeling as empty as space itself? Could it have been the “seen it all before“ factor? Grav-
ity did the daunting beauty of space better than any other film. Castaway was a terrific tale of survival against isolation and starvation. Interstellar even had Matt Damon left alone on a planet, for Pete’s sake. Is the view from space getting tired? Like the Western before it, which told tales from the saddle with the backdrop of a spectacular American landscape that most would never see, perhaps we have now seen Earth from a porthole too many. The interior of spaceships even with the cool, non-gravity floatation of the crew- has been seen scores of times by any adult with a passing interest in films. Was the science too much for my feeble brain? Maybe. More likely, however, was the lack of an engaging storyline

involving the NASA eggheads working out how to get our hero back to Earth before he starved or went mad. There just wasn’t a credible narrative to the rescue mission - at least not one that this Year 9 science drop-out could easily follow. Was it just a bit boring? Yep. A man growing potatoes in space is still just a man growing potatoes. I kept hoping Ridley Scott had kept an Alien or two in reserve to spice up life on Mars. The Martian isn’t a failed mission and it certainly didn’t explode on take-off. It’s just more like one of those space missions where they do tests, come back safely, but nobody really cares. Worthy, but dull. - Danny Buttler

Stress-free modern townhouse THIS modern three-bedroom townhouse is the front one of two in a quiet tree-lined street. The massive open living area enjoys plenty of natural light and opens onto an enclosed courtyard for outdoor entertaining. The master bedroom includes a walk-in robe and ensuite, while the other bedrooms have built-in robes and ceiling fans. The stylish timber kitchen has all stainless steel appliances: gas cooktop, electric oven and dishwasher. Ducted heating and cooling will keep you comfy all-year round. The double remote garage has internal access, and the grounds are low-maintenance. If you’re looking for a home without the work a large yard requires, this one’s for you. Remember, get advice IT'S easy to be attracted by ‘reality TV’ home improvement programs, which show do-it-yourself renovators adding significant value to their properties. So, if you’re looking to sell this spring or summer, should you be considering some renovation projects first? Seek some advice. There’s no doubt that, for the most part, a home requiring extensive renovation may well attract a lower price. But if you’re lucky enough to have a large block of land and your local council allows it, some properties will be sought after because of their development potential rather than the condition of the home. If you’re among the last freestanding homes in your street and other blocks have already been redeveloped as units, townhouses or apartments, renovating to sell may not add value. But if development potential isn’t the most attractive thing about your property and you want to present it in the best possible light, be very careful about the style of renovations you embark upon- and the cost. Prepare a thorough budget, with a reasonable contingency fund, and talk to local agents about what return on investment you might be able to achieve when it comes to selling.
Remember, not all renovations result in an improved selling price. The renovation needs to be of a high quality, and sympathetic to the style of your house, to make a significant impact on buyers. Again, ask your agent: what are buyers looking for in the area? Is an unrenovated bathroom a deal breaker and what renovations are likely to give you the best return on your investment? They can advise you on what might be effective in the current market and help you avoid overcapitalising. Agents look at properties every day; they hear feedback from prospective buyers on what works and what doesn’t and they are more than happy to share that knowledge with you, so you can achieve the best possible outcome. And remember: renovation and stylising a home are two different things. It may just involve some fresh paint, a few new soft furnishings and attention to all the little jobs around the home you’ve been putting off, such as replacing light fixtures, fixing a broken blind or weeding the garden. If you are going to invest some sizeable funds in a renovation, talk to your agent about what will make your home as appealing and memorable as possible for potential buyers.

Clean up to avoid leaks SPRING is in the air and while many turn their attention to tidying the home and garden, there are some less pleasant tasks that sometimes get overlooked. RACV Home Services has compiled some handy tips on how to avoid home emergencies over the coming months. RACV Home Services general manager Aaron Flavell said it was important to prepare around the home to avoid emergencies associated with spring - such as ceiling leaks after heavy rain. “With higher spring rainfalls and winds, we see a pick up in water-related home emergencies,” hesaid. “We encourage members to check their roof and gutters at this time of year. Consider hiring a professional with trade insurance to carry out risky work at height.” Ensuring gutters are cleared will help prevent water damage during spring storms, while well-maintained electrical equipment will help prevent house fires. Mr Flavell said RACV Emergency Home Assist experiences an increase in callouts to members with ceiling and wall leaks as well as burst or blocked pipes and drains. Between September and November last year, RACV attended more than 3000 incidents of this nature for members with Emergency Home Assistance across both metropolitan and regional Victoria. “Ceiling leaks represented about a fifth of the incidents, while blocked drains and burst pipes also figured prominently,” Mr Flavell said. The main causes of ceiling and wall leaks are blocked gutters and breaks or gaps in roof tiles. “While it’s good to know RACV Emergency Home Assist is ready to respond 24/7 when a home emergency occurs, it’s even better
when these emergencies are avoided by good maintenance,” he said. RACV also recommends making sure insurance policies are up to date to provide peace of mind that you are covered in the event that your home is damaged. Top spring call-outs - 1 September to 31 November 2014 Source: RACV Home Services Job type Number of incidents Blocked toilets/drains/pipes 1191 Broken tap 815 Burst pipes 673 Ceiling/wall leaks 657 Top 10 tips for getting your Source: RACV Home Services home fit for spring 1. Clean and flush blocked drains if possible, or seek advice from a plumber. 2. Repair loose or leaky gutters and down pipes. 3. Clear winter sludge from gutter to ensure water flows freely. 4. Check roofs for loose tiles, loose nails and flashing. Consider hiring a professional with trade insurance to carry out risky work at heights. 5. Identify loose objects susceptible to being blow over by higher winds. 6. Clean windows and check for any signs of rot or damage. 7. Monitor mould and damp issues in and close to the house. 8. Close off any roof gaps / entrance points for vermin, birds and other nesting mammals. 9. Make sure your electrical circuits and equipment are not overloaded by having them professionally inspected. 10. Change the batteries in your smoke detector.

Local Sport Parkrun in perfect conditions By TANIA PHILLIPS THE weather was stunning, and so it was the perfect time to take part in the Albury Wodonga Parkrun at the weekend. Held weekly, the event is a free 5km timed run against the clock. Held every Saturday at 8am, it takes place at the Hovell Tree Park, Wodonga Place, Albury. The event doesn’t cost anything, though participants are asked to register before their first run and bring along a printed copy of their barcode. It is entirely organised by volunteers. Contact alburywodongahelpers@parkrun.com to help. Every week participants grab a post parkrun coffee at the Riverdeck Kiosk, located in Noreuil Park. Photographer Adam Wilson was on hand to grab all the action.

Yachties taking to the water By TANIA PHILLIPS ALBURY Wodonga Yacht Club is working hard to put Lake Hume on the sailing map by offering a range of fun and competitive sailing experiences this summer. The club is running Sunday morning sailing races, including introductory sessions, offers a Sailability program, and is gearing up for a major regatta in November. “Albury Wodonga Yacht Club is a small country sailing club that runs purely on the volunteer power of our 300-plus members and the generosity of local organisations and groups who support us,” Commodore Stuart Richardson said. “Our members simply love sailing, so we want our club to be a thriving place where people of allages and abilities can come to discover the joy of sailing. Everyone is welcome!”
Registrations are now open for a series of 'learn to sail’ classes that will start at the club in early November, including the popular Yachting Australia Tackers program designed for 7 to 12-year-olds. Other upcoming sailing, training and volunteer opportunities include: Saturday 17 October: Join a safe and fun Sailability session from 12.30-3.30pm for just $5 per sailor. Open to people of all abilities, and run by experienced volunteers using speciallydesigned Hansa Access Dinghies. Saturday 17 October: Register for a Race Officer Training Course (10am - 4pm). Develop skills and knowledge to confidently volunteer for on-water racing roles, including for sailing regattas. Sunday 18 October: Join a Discover Sailing Experience from 1pm-5pm. $50 per person, includes a complimentary drink.

November: AWYC is hosting Sail Country, incorporating the Victorian Dinghy Championships. Watch top level sailors from Victoria, NSW and the ACT compete in various classes of sailing boats, including children from the age of eight years in the International Optimist class. The inaugural event held in 2014 attracted 120plus competitors, with more expected this year. Saturday, 7 November: Join a Better Sailing course and get ready to sail on Lake Hume. “Sailing is such a fantastic sport and Lake Hume is the perfect place to learn, hone and develop your skills,” concluded Stuart. Find out more by visiting www. awyc.yachting.org.au or search for the Albury Wodonga Yacht ClubFacebook page.
