Veil of (sex)recy By ANEEKA SIMONIS IT APPEARS Pakenham’s alleged swingers aren’t the only ones trying to keep their business under wraps. Now, almost three months after the launch of Cardinia Shire Council’s investigation into the rumoured sex house, council continues to decline to answer questions about its probe. Council’s veil of secrecy around the investigation is so extensive, that they will not even reveal what it is they are investigating. On a number of occasions, the News has made efforts to understand how the investigation was progressing, asking non-prejudicial questions about the inquiry, including which local laws are suspected to have been breached as part of the alleged swinger operation. Yet council has flatly refused to provide this information as well as an estimated deadline for the release of the findings, how many people have been interviewed in relation to the alleged operation or what penalties may be handed down to those involved. In fact, the News cannot even confirm if the rumoured sex operation has been shut down as council refuses to answer questions about whether the suspected house is still up for use. Council’s manager for Development and Compliance Services Brett Jackson argued that their tight-lipped approach was standard practice, likening the process to
that used by other investigating authorities such as police. “Council, like all investigating authorities, does not comment on current investigations to ensure they are not compromised. The investigation into this matter is continuing, and due to its nature, it may take some time to conclude,” he said. However, it is standard practice for police to issue basic information about investigations including the nature of suspected offences. But as it stands, the council cover up has generated more questions than answers, leaving no indication of a ruling anytime soon. The swinger scandal was first brought to light in July this year after a neighbour raised the alarm on the suspected sex house which attracted increased traffic into the street over weekends. It is unclear how long the alleged parties were in operation, however the News understands participants were charged a door fee - with single men charged $80 in comparison to single women who were able to take part for free. Couples were charged $30. It is believed the door rates may have been unlawfully obtained if the business, operating in a residential area, was not registered - however council cannot confirm this information. The News will continue to question council for details about the swinger probe, including details surrounding the process.

Thieves take a break By ANEEKA SIMONIS IT WAS quiet in Pakenham last week, with no motor car theft incidents reported to police. Statistically, Pakenham has the highest rate of motor car thefts across Cardinia Shire. However, between Monday 21 September and
Sunday 27 September, police received no theft reports in the Pakenham, Officer or Beaconsfield area. It comes a week after police received eight reports of thefts from motor cars, with those parked in Pakenham being the hottest target for opportunistic criminals.
Last week, police received one report of stolen registration plates and theft of coins from an unlocked car parked at a residential address in Emerald. Police continue to urge drivers to keep their car locked at all times and keep valuables out of sight. Charity backed by supermarket heroes By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM TEAM members from Coles Pakenham have used their packing, stacking, filling and sorting skills to help local people in need. Staff from the Main Street store, along with seven other local Coles stores, recently took time to volunteer for the 4Cs Crisis Relief Centre. As well as the volunteer effort, the store has been donating food and supplies to 4Cs for almost a year, with products being collected four to five times a week.
Such frequent donation is made possible through Coles’ partnership with ‘SecondBite’, a national fresh food rescue organisation. Since the beginning of the partnership, Coles has donated 9133 kilograms of fresh fruit, vegetables and bakery items - the equivalent of 18,266 meals. The 4Cs client services manager Rebecca Burr said the support of businesses like Coles was crucial to the operation of the organisation. “On any given day, 4Cs will help an average of 185 families. This
simply wouldn’t be possible without our ongoing partnership with Coles,” she said. “If we weren’t getting these deliveries the families would go hungry.” Ms Burr also thanked Coles employees for giving up their time. “We are just so grateful when people take time out of their day to volunteer with us.” Coles Pakenham Store Manager Brad Johnson said staff embraced the opportunity to make a difference
within the community. “We had about 14 Coles team members at 4Cs helping to sort food and pack boxes,” he said. “Everyone involved got a lot out of the experience and were pleased to be making a positive contribution to the community,” he said. Throughout September, Coles ran a campaign to help reduce food wastage by selling food storage labels to raise money for SecondBite and to help customers make the most of leftover food. 1196815-AM39-15

SES volunteers showed the versatility of their skills this week as they held a fundraiser barbecue in Pakenham. Members of the Pakenham unit spent four hours selling sausages outside Supercheap Auto last Tuesday 29 September. Funded primarily by donations, Community Education officer Jeanine Pushman said the unit was working towards buying a new rescue truck. “We need a couple of hundred thousand dollars to do it, so that will involve a lot of fund-raising,” she said. “What most people don’t realise is that the SES gets only a small stipend from the state. Everything else we need to come up with ourselves.” Jeanine said the SES had been approached by Supercheap Auto and asked if they would be interested in holding a barbecue. “It’s great that they’re getting involved with the local community and supporting us. I would anticipate there will definitely be more fund-raising activities with them in the future.”

Fluffy family’s quack attack By GEORGIA WESTGARTH ONE mother duck has created a home away from home in Russell Street, Cranbourne. For the second consecutive year this mother duck has set up camp to hatch her brood of ducklings in an old pencil pine tree in Val and Jim Bourke’s backyard. Hatching 13 fluff balls in 2014, this year she left with 14 trailing behind her after one died. A Cranbourne resident of 33 years, Mr Bourke said the new tradition is a first in the street. “When we had the wood fire a certain amount of heat would come through the chimney and ducks would sit on the roof to keep warm, but we’ve never had them in the yard hatching before,” he said. The brood of cuteness hatched in their nest in the tall pencil pine tree before making a crash landing on to the grass. “We gave them water and the mother some bread - they were a fantastic sight and off they would go eating grass and

Running amuck in the Bourke’s backyard for three days, the happy family was off down the street on Saturday 26 September where they may have taken a quick dip in a neighbour’s swimming pool. “The ducklings got out through a hole in the fence and the mother flew over. “I suspect they will go to a
nearby housing estate which has a lake,” Mr Bourke said. The Bourke family has become quite accustomed to the new brood and this isn’t the first time something like this has happened. Lorikeets nested and gave birth in the same tree for three years before the family of ducks took over. “We expect mother duck back next year,” Mr Bourke laughed.

THREE intruders have broken into a Cranbourne North pharmacy and stolen a quantity of Sudafed over the weekend. They broke into the Chemist Warehouse store on Linden Tree Way by smashing a glass door just after 1am on Saturday 26 September.
The thieves, all wearing balaclavas, targeted particular medicines including Sudafed cold and flu tablets. Sudafed contains pseudoephedrine, a drug which can be used in the illegal manufacture of methamphetamine.

Referring to the letter by John Glazebrook (Council Should Look Forward, News, 24 September). We find it very disgusting that the mayor has informed residents and ratepayers of the intention to reappoint the CEO Mike Tyler. This is a serious issues and the mayor just cannot inform the community he has to get the permission of the community to pass this resolution. Yes, it is very essential that such a highly paid position in the council must be open to other candidates for this position of CEO and a two year tenure of service is sufficient and reasonable. All ratepayers must have a say in this matter as we are the ones who are paying their fat salaries. It is a great shame for the whole local community of 288,000 people. Every resident and ratepayer must raise their voices and be heard, we cannot sit back and be dictated to, we must get the City of Casey Council to do our bidding and not their own. Remember that councils are elected by the people for the people. So, dear ratepayers, please wake up to the call to band together and challenge the council. Heads above hearts WHAT a great letter by Eliezer Francois of Endeavour Hills (Refugee Reaction, News, 24 September). I totally agree with this lady’s comments on the Refugee Invasion of Europe. It was only “yesterday” that we in Australia were told to be “alert” not “alarmed” and to report anything or anybody or anything that was not quite right. Particularly in this past year, even the very young (some only 15 years old) have come under the radar of the authorities because of suspicious behaviour. Are they IS, they wonder. Why is it then that tens of thousands and thousands and more thousands are pouring into Europe. I am sure these same rules apply over there as to be alert but not alarmed. These “refugees” have very different religions, different cultures and different values, why are they travelling to Christian Europe, what the hell is going on here, why is all this happening? Why are Angela Merkel of Germany and Francois Hollande of France encouraging them? Hungary seems to be the only country that has not got its head in the sand. Dutch MP Geert Wilders is also saying “for God’s sakes EU, wake up, wake up, wake up!” (I saw him speak in Parliament) but is anyone listening. This has got to be the biggest Trojan Horse of all times. Yes Elizer, I agree with you. Here in Australia, let us not be swayed by all the bleeding hearts but let us think hard with our heads and not our hearts or else we will suffer some very serious consequences. I recently watched The Great Australian Spelling Bee on Channel 10. What impressed me more than the children’s spelling ability was their sportsmanship. I don’t watch The Block or My Kitchen Rules because of the way some of the contestants act towards one another. The children were under a lot of pressure. Some of them were as young as eight. Scoreboard blitz is set By LACHLAN MOORHEAD DRINK drivers in Melbourne’s south-east have been put on notice. This Grand Final weekend, police will saturate the streets of Casey, Cardinia and Dandenong as Operation Scoreboard is unleashed to coincide with football’s biggest day. The operation will run state-wide from 1 to 4 October but will be strongly focused in Melbourne’s outer south-east and will include patrols of both marked and unmarked cars, with packaged liquor outlets to be regularly monitored. Acting Senior Sergeant Pat Green from the Casey Cardinia Highway Patrol said officers would be out in force. “There are plenty of ways to enjoy the AFL and NRL Grand Finals and while many will involve the consumption of alcohol, we ask you put road safety at the front of your minds,” he said. “Stay within the speed limit, don’t drink or take drugs and drive, leave your mobile phone out of reach, use your seatbelt, and make sure you are well rested.” Acting Sen Sgt Green said a lack of public transport in Casey, Cardinia and Dandenong could see a rise in the likelihood of drink-driving in the region. “We got an intelligence brief and our analysts looked at previous Grand Final weekends, and now because it’s a public holiday, people are likely to be drinking more,” Acting Sen Sgt Green said. “And in places like Cardinia, and Casey, which are further removed from town and where public transport isn’t great, people rely on cars.” He said the Casey Highway Patrol was getting on the “front foot”, targeting the three neighbouring south-eastern municipalities. “Because Casey has been identified as a highrisk Local Government Area for road trauma,

POLICE have arrested three men at a Narre Warren house after a harrowing road rage incident the previous day in which it’s alleged a weapon was brandished at the victim. The victim was travelling along James Cook Drive in Endeavour Hills when they were cut off by a maroon Holden Commodore at the Hallam North Road intersection, just after 5pm on Thursday 24 September. Police allege the occupants of the Commodore then became aggressive towards the victim, with one of them allegedly pulling out a weapon and pointing it at the victim’s car. The next day detectives from Cardinia CIU executed a search warrant at a Shiraz Crescent home in Narre Warren and arrested three men. One was remanded in custody while the other two were released pending inquiries. A police spokesperson said numberplate recognition was involved when carrying out the arrests. New stolen generation FRIGHTENED parents with disabilities are not registering their children’s births because their previous children have been taken away from them, according to a south-east based advocate. And Michelle de Hommel, who has successfully raised six children and is the head of Parents With a Disability, said recent changes to child protection laws could create a “new stolen generation”. Ms de Hommel said she knows of parents with a disability who, out of fear of losing their kids because the Child Protection Service says they can’t look after them, are avoiding registering their births or are fleeing interstate. Her group, the Law Institute of Victoria and the Office of the Public Advocate have spoken out against the change, which mandates courts to order that children who are out of home for 12 months are put into permanent care. The natural parents then have access to their children four times a year until they turn 18. Ms de Hommel has “joined the dots” between this new focus on “permanent care” to a high-profile campaign to relax adoption laws of Australian children.

Her group advocates for a boost in state-funded support above the current three-hours-aweek of assistance afforded by the Department of Health and Human Services. “The money is just not going to parents, who may need just a few more hours of support.” Colleen Pearce, the state’s Public Advocate, said on Tuesday 22 September that children were being removed from parents with disabilities at a much higher rate than parents without disabilities. She said the child protection law changes would be “devastating” for parents with disabilities trying to retain their children.
“Disability is assumed to be a risk to children,” Ms Pearce said. “There is no credible evidence to support this assumption.” Ms Pearce said the DHHS was prone to put “negative scrutiny” over parents with a disability rather than giving support and encouragement. “In a risk-averse system, parents with disabilities are being assessed as being inherently at risk of poor parenting, even before it is tested and without supports to assist success. “Research shows that it is overwhelmingly more beneficial for children to live in their biological family home whether or not their parent has a disability.” Families and Children Minister Jenny Mikakos said a number of family services and parenting supports were available including individual support packages, case management, aids and equipment, respite and behaviour intervention support. “All new child protection practitioners receive specific training on parents with a disability to ensure they receive the appropriate support required, often in very stressful circumstances. “DHHS will carefully consider the Office of the Public Advocate’s report.”

Winners in waiting By CASEY NEILL BERWICK’S Australian Precision Technologies (APT) won a top manufacturing award just a few months ago and is already in the running for another. The family-owned and operated business took home the Small Manufacturer of the Year title at June’s Victorian Manufacturing Hall of Fame awards. It’s now in the running for the Manufacturer of the Year Award at the Casey Cardinia Business Awards alongside Hallam’s Wastech Engineering and fellow Berwick business Successful Endeavours. The winners will be announced at a gala dinner a Cranbourne Racing Centre on 22 October. APT was inducted into the Victorian Manufacturing Hall of Fame last year and picked up the manufacturing award at the inaugural Casey Cardinia Business Awards. “It’s recognition for all our hard work and commitment in a challenging manufacturing industry,” co-director Ron Weinzierl said. “With government and industry support we’ll be able to develop into a worldclass manufacturer.” Ron’s brother Richard Weinzierl founded the company in 1992. Ron came on board in 1998 and said APT was now leading the market on national and global fronts with clients in aerospace, defence, automotive, biomedical and telecommunications. “We’re known for precision engineering - we make stuff that people can make into products,” Ron said.

Disability no job barrier By CASEY NEILL EMPLOYEES are using their disabilities to their advantage at EDMI in Dandenong. Operations manager Cameron Bower last year took on five workers through DVJS in Cranbourne to cover extra work. The three who remain are going from strength to strength. Dion from Doveton has vision problems, but Mr Bower said that heightened his sense of touch and made him perfect for a role checking crucial parts. Scott from Hampton Park has autism and works in the packing area with meticulous consistency. “It’s exactly what I want,” Mr Bower said. “Since he started packing I have not had one issue.” David from Kooweerup is deaf and works in the spray painting booth. “That’s no issue for me - all of my employees have to wear hearing protection anyway,” Mr Bower said.
EDMI repairs domestic and industrial gas meters and assembles and tests meters and regulators. “Our core business is repairing gas meters and supply of new for the domestic market,” he said. The company has been in Dandenong for 15-plus years, previously as Atlas Measurement. Mr Bower came on as operations manager in 2010, and said smart meters could see the business grow in the near future. “In the UK, we’ve won part of a tender for 20 million gas meters over about five years. That’s all government-legislated,” he said. “Unless government legislation changes here, it’s not going to be something that’s on a mass roll-out.” Mr Bower had avoided “body shops” in the past, but found DVJS consulted with workers and workplaces to find the right fit for both. “You’re not stuck with that person trying to make it work when really, it’s

Casey Mayor Mick Morland said the councils received a great response to the new award. “There were 52 businesses from across the region nominated for the award, with the public then asked to vote for their favourite business from the nominees on the region’s website,” he said. Cardinia Mayor Leticia Wilmot said the new category had been a wonderful way for the community to shine a light on the local businesses that had impressed them and provided superb customer service. Managing director Ray Keefe started Successful Endeavours as a home-based business in 1997. “By 2005 I realised I didn’t know how to make this thing grow,” he said. Mr Keefe went looking for a business mentor and tracked down the right one in 2008. He rebranded the business, repositioned it in the market and moved out of home into commercial premises. “Four months after that we won Casey Business of the Year,” he said. The Berwick small business has since collected several award nominations and wins. Wastech Engineering was a finalist for the Medium Manufacturer of the Year title at this year’s Victorian Manufacturing Hall of Fame Awards. It won the Manufacturing Award at March’s Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce Premier Regional Business Awards and took home the Casey Business of the Year and Casey Manufacturer of the Year awards for 2013. In May last year it won the Melbourne South East (MSE) Business Awards Business of the Year Overall Business Excellence award and Medium Enterprise category. Brothers Neil and Paul Bone started Wastech in 1993 after largely working on trucks involved in the waste business during their time as diesel motor mechanics. The business has grown from a threeman band to an industry leader with more than 90 staff and a turnover pushing $30 million. Wastech’s customers range from large national retail stores and shopping centre developments to suburban retailers and its equipment includes front lift trucks, static compactors, bin lifters and bins.

Aiming to give $40,000 to the foundation by April 2016, Ms Bonavita has already raised $3600 since March this year and hopes an upcoming shopping tour will add to that total. “This year my fund-raising team is called ‘Mimi’s Gang’ and so far as a group we’ve raised $14000,” she said. Just in time to represent Cranbourne in a new light at the upcoming spring racing carnival, the series of flagpoles and directional signage was unveiled on Thursday 24 September. Cranbourne Turf Club Chief Executive Officer, Neil Bainbridge said the rusted steel, stainless steel and timber signs made a great addition and first impression to the racing centre. “They certainly create a great sense of arrival and make a real statement - it's one that’s been planned for a couple of years,” Mr Bainbridge said. Russell said the most exciting and memorable was his first. “Bart Cummings won that race and I can remember the butterflies I felt leading up to calling it - but it’s always a big thrill - it’s an experience, I encourage everyone to go to the Melbourne Cup at least once,” Mr Russell said. Riding ‘What A Nuisance’ to Cup glory in 1985, Pat Hyland, showed off his slightly smaller Melbourne Cup trophy to the crowd. “It’s not very often it comes out of the house,” Mr Hyland laughed. Amid the memories came the clothes, with black and white saturating the runway. Ladies showed off flesh in strappy black stilettos and modest off the shoulder and boatneck dresses, with widebrimmed hats the pick of the bunch.

Their new jungle home By RUSSELL BENNETT THE Pakenham Silverbacks already won Gridiron Victoria’s Division 2 crown as a nomadic team well behind the eight-ball. Look out, now that the playing field is level. More to the point, they’ve now finally got their own playing field, at Heatherbrae Recreation Reserve in Officer, and the club - which is still soaring on the back of a championship win in just its second season - is set to become much, much stronger. The Silverbacks have been in consultation with the Cardinia Shire Council over the past 12 months to find a ground suitable to host games. The club’s junior side has been able to play games in Pakenham over the past two seasons - thanks largely to the help of other local sporting clubs - but the roaring success of the senior side and a booming interest in the sport has meant that finding a more permanent home has been paramount. “The distances the senior side has had to travel have been phenomenal, with the closest games for the team last year being in Morwell or Reservoir, and three trips to Bendigo in the late half of the season,” said Silverbacks president, senior player and co-founder Richie Howlett. “While the feeling around the team has been great, you can sense that the travel is a limiting factor for a lot of guys, and we’ve heard from potential players that couldn’t commit because of it. “It also makes it harder for friends, family and supporters to come along to games. “We’ve been blessed to have really strong local support, and being able to play in front of a home crowd can have a real impact on the outcome of any given game. “We want to reward the families on
the sideline who support our boys.” Howlett said the club hoped to capitalise on the better facilities to build a bigger, stronger side. “At some point in the future, whether this coming season or beyond, we’re planning to make an application to enter the side into Division 1,” he said. “To do that, we’re going to have to step up not just the physical aspect of the training, but also the ‘chalk talks’ and video review that we haven’t yet been able to do as a team.” Howlett said he “couldn’t be happier” with where the club is headed due to its predicted growth over the next 12 months. The Silverbacks are hoping to introduce a women’s team as well, which until now they simply haven’t had the facilities for. Being able to host home games will provide the club with a much-needed source of revenue via the canteen, but Howlett went even further - saying: “It also allows the whole community to come along and take ownership of the team - something we’ve been striving for from the very get go”. The club reached another significant milestone on the weekend with its juniors winning the first game on home soil for a Silverbacks side - 22-12 over the Monash Warriors at Lakeside. The game started out with some strong offensive plays but a few costly Pakenham mistakes gave Monash the lead. An interception from quarterback Lee Belton was returned for the first score of the game but he showed his strength of character to bounce back and find tight end Mitch Farrant in the end-zone. Monash maintained its advantage heading into the half thanks to a Pakenham fumble that was returned for another six points, but the Silverbacks came out of the break with a real sense of purpose.

It was called back for a penalty, but only minutes later he threw another, this time to Chevy Edwards, to give Silverbacks the lead again. The story of the second half was the dominance of the Silverbacks’ defence. Captain Jaxson Mahy was able hold down the run-game from middle linebacker, and Laquon Laumua, who recently trialled with the Melbourne Storm under-18s, was a stand-out on the defensive line, putting consistent pressure on the Monash quarterback and racking up a series of strong tackles. Another fourth quarter score, this time a bootleg quarterback keep from Belton, put the game further out of reach of the Warriors. The Silverbacks are now fifth on the junior standings and will this week face off against local rivals the Berwick Miners at Sydney Pargeter Reserve in Endeavour Hills, from 1.30pm this Sunday.

WGCA welcomes Kalgidhar to play By RUSSELL BENNETT SOMETIMES it’s so easy to get caught up in the politics of local sport that the things that really matter fall by the wayside - the love of the game, the community spirit, and mateship. But on Sunday at Donnelly Reserve in Cranbourne, everything that’s good about the game of cricket was on display for a massive crowd of spectators. The thrill of a bowler on a hattrick, the excitement of a batsman in search of quick boundaries, the sportsmanship of strong competition, even just the sound of willow on leather. The final of the Melbourne Champions Cricket League (MCCL) saw the Red Daredevils defeat the Spartan XI in a thrilling contest. The Twenty-20 competition has had 16 teams competing in it over recent months, and now an exciting new chapter is about to start - with one of its clubs, Kalgidhar Cricket Club, set to enter a side in the Sub-District division of this West Gippsland Cricket Association (WGCA) season. Amandeep Singh, the secretary and treasurer of the MCCL, said one of the league’s main aims was to extend the game of cricket into different communities of various backgrounds. “We’re promoting this for the kids as well so they can play in the future in a more professional environment,” he said. Rupinder Singh Dhanoa will be Kalgidhar’s inaugural captain in the WGCA. He said when the MCCL first started roughly a decade ago the organisers were “just migrants with nothing on us - not even a bat - but we had a dream to play at this level and we’ve been working on it together and we’ve finally got there”. He paid tribute to WGCA president Brett Armitage for his role in helping Kalgidhar take that next step. “I took a call from Jason Mathers, our Region 8 manager,” Armitage said. “He told me this cricket league was looking for some help to get into some competitive cricket and to be affiliated with somebody under the Cricket Victoria banner. “Within two or three weeks we had them affiliated with us so they could play their winter competition. “The intention was to give them the ability to use My Cricket and have all the insurances and incorporations they needed to be recognised

Kalgidhar will be temporarily based at Lakeside in Pakenham until a more permanent home can be arranged. The club’s players stem from the local south eastern suburbs, and could look to field junior teams in the not-too-distant future. “If there are more players and juniors, they can be put in during the course of the season,” Armitage said. “At the moment we’ve only got five clubs in our G Grade and six in our one-day comp, so there is room there. “Over the past 10 years in the WGCA, sometimes halfway through the season, we’ve been able to fill a position in a grade because there’s a team there. We left the affiliation of teams until the 18th of September because we don’t want forfeits, so we’ve left it a month later than normal to give everyone the opportunity to put in their nominations.” Armitage also hit out at some existing criticism around local circles that the WGCA wasn’t doing enough to make the future of its clubs sustainable. “We need people out there (from potential new teams or clubs) to want to take that step and the league will find them a ground, like we’ve done here,” he said. “It wasn’t a lot of work - it was just having the right people who were keen to do something. “The other thing that’s really disappointing is that we’ve had this concept of Premier, District and Sub-District for I think five or six years and I just wonder what some clubs are doing about it. “We ask them all the time about growth within their own cricket club because they’re now a first eleven team. We’ve put in player points to minimise not being able to financially reward people or share the money around, and we’ve actually even given money back to the clubs on all royalties we negotiate with Kookaburra and stuff like that. “We’re trying to put money back into it and make it easier for everyone to promote, to recruit and do things - they’ve just got to get off their backsides and help us.” With around 200 people in attendance at Donnelly Reserve on Sunday, it showed the grassroots support for cricket in the south east is absolutely alive and well. The metropolitan daily released its list of the best country footballers from across Victoria over the past 25 years, and Holt and Goosey featured in the South East section - along with 43-year-old Sorrento icon Guy Stringer. The two truly legendary full for-
wards fell short of winning another premiership at Cranbourne this season, but they’ll both be back with a vengeance in 2016. From Gippsland, Maffra brothers Adrian and Hayden Burgiel also made the list - as did Martin Cameron and Greg ‘Googa’ Morley from Traralgon. From the Yarra Ranges region, Wandin gun Jarrod Bayliss featured as did revered Yarra Valley figure Jason De Graaf, and Paddy Sharp and Danny Ryan from Woori Yallock.

Local footy fans have put their favourites forward, with the Sun reporting that inspirational Western Bulldogs skipper - and Warragul product - Bob Murphy chimed in with a vote for Ben Soumilas. “But Soumilas, the All-Australian captain’s brother-in-law, said
his younger brother Andy or former teammate Lincoln Withers would be more deserving of legend status,” a 28 September article on the Herald Sun website, titled ‘Victoria’s country football legends: Feats that turned players into local heroes’, reads. According to the article, Sydney premiership player, former Gippsland Power star and Drouin product Luke Ablett also backed Andy Soumilas to be on the list.

A spring in their steps PAKENHAM GOLF A LOVELY spring morning met the players for the Monday par competition, and with the course coming back to life, the scoring is starting to improve. John Roberts (17) shot the best score of the day with +3, with Les Jones coming in second with +1. Ball comp went down to square. A cool and drizzly morning didn’t deter too many players, with a strong field contending the Wednesday competition. Ross Maclean (16) won A Grade with 38 points, holding off Brian Carvell (21) on a countback. Merv Owen (32) had a fantastic score of 40 points to win B Grade, with Jack Kelly (34) coming second with 38 points. Graham Allen had a round of two halves, but fortunately for him his back nine was the better nine, shooting 23 points to win the super comp. The ball comp went down to 36 points. Albert Hill (21) won on Friday on a countback with 36 points. Saturday was an absolutely stunning day out on the course for Pakenham’s aggregate stableford event. Mark Stewart and Gary Wilkinson combined the best with a great score of 74 points to hold off Fergus O’Gallgher and Brent Greenwood on a countback. Marcus Cameron and Mark Hatton made it a clean sweep for the morning field for all the vouchers, coming in third with 72 points on a countback. Pakenham also had three matches of the McQualter Knockout played on Saturday. Jason McQualter took on Darren Grayson with the winner progressing to the quarter finals. It was a disappointing day for Jason, who has never managed to win the event named after his late father and life-member Graeme McQualter, and with son Nic bundled out last week he remained the last McQualter in the draw until Saturday, where he came up against an extremely consistent Darren Grayson. Darren took advantage of the shots Jason had to give him to secure a 3/1 victory. Darren will now take on club captain Clint Walker for a spot in the semi-finals after Clint continued his run of good form to defeat Matt Brown 5/3. Clint is having his own Jason Day-like run, with his worst result in his last six competition or match play rounds being a second place at the John Deere Australasian final in the Hunter Valley. In other matches, Kevin McCrae defeated Tim Sallai on the last hole in a very tight match-up. Kevin is no stranger to the pointy end of the McQualter Knockout, and is a former winner of the event. Kevin obviously revels in the match play format. Dean Jones defeated Mick Boyd in a close match, getting over the line on the last hole 2-up. Dean will now play his namesake but no relation in Neil Jones, while Noel Boyd defeated Scott Milnes 3/1 to also progress through to the quarter finals and will take on Kevin McCrae. Geoff Cleland (24) won Sunday on a countback with 36 points. Yvonne Smith (31) finished second on 36. On Thursday Pakenham’s ladies had a beautiful sunny day for their 4BBB stableford - footy day competition, with many of them coming dressed in their footy team colours, jerseys, socks and caps.
