Choose your mayor By ERIN SOMERVILLE AN ALBURY councillor has spoken out against the practice of councillors voting for the city’s mayor, saying it should be a job left for the community. Councillor Graham Docksey’s comments come after current Albury mayor Kevin Mack announced he won’t be seeking re-election this month due to family and work commitments. Deputy mayor Ross Jackson will also be stepping aside from his post. The vacancies are expected to see a number of potential candidates raise their hands for the job. Cr Docksey says the decision should be left for the public to make in the future. “It is my personal opinion that no one councillor should be placed in the position of being the ‘king maker’, he said. “I firmly believe that as the community voted in the nine councillors, then the community should have the right to vote for their mayor and deputy mayor. “Let the community decide who they consider best to represent their community. Cr Docksey said the procedure could help stamp out potential secret backroom deals and revolving mayors. Current local government procedure as a general rule sees councillors elect one of their number to be the mayor for a one-year term. However in some councils it has been decided by referendum that the voters will elect the mayor. Where this is the case, the mayor is said to be ’elected by popular vote’, or ‘a directly elected mayor’ and serves a fouryear term. In this situation the optional preferential method of voting is used. Albury councillors will vote for the new mayor and deputy mayor on 28 September.

the cast was more than happy to pose for a few photos before its performance last week. They even didn’t hesitate to bring Albury mayor Kevin Mack in on the circus action. Local woman Spenser Inwood was one performer who grew up in Albury and spent a decade of her youth training at the Flying Fruit Fly Circus. She may only be small, but impressed the crowds with her amazing feats of strength as she bench-presses co-performers, and catches and throws full-grown men. “It’s pretty exciting to be back,” she said. Performer Kyle Raftery said Albury was a strong nursery for budding circus artists. “With the Flying Fruit Fly here there is an instant respect - if someone says they were a Fruity, you know that they know what they’re talking about.”

Tribute to the Anzac spirit By ERIN SOMERVILLE THE Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott headed a list of high-profile guests who visited Wodonga on Friday morning 4 September for the opening of the Spirit of Anzac Centenary (SACE) exhibition. The opening of the $35 million travelling exhibition was also attended by Commonwealth Bank CEO Ian Narev, Telstra CEO Andrew Penn, and local MPs and local government leaders as they gathered to honour the service men and women of Australia. Wodonga is the first stop in the exhibition’s national tour. Prime Minister Tony Abbott has encouraged all residents to take the chance to see the exhibition. “Having been through it, I would say to people don’t miss it,” he said. “This is a really marvellous recreation of the lives and times and struggles of our grandparents and great-grandparents. The Prime Minister continued to praise the multi-million dollar exhibition in his opening address. “The centenary of Anzac does not will not - glorify war,” he said. “Rather, it commemorates what is best in the human spirit, what is noblest in our character and acknowledges that the worst of times can bring out the best in us.” Wodonga mayor Rodney Wangman highlighted the significance of the exhi-

bition to Border residents. “Wodonga is excited to be selected as the launch city of the SACE travelling exhibition,” he said. “Albury Wodonga has strong connections to the Australian Defence Force with significant defence presence here among us in Wodonga since the 1940s, and which is still expanding today. “Today in launching the SACE we provide a further learning experience and opportunity of our war time history, and the sacrifices made by the Australian Defence Personnel.” The exhibition contains 200 artefacts, still and visual imagery, interactive technology, and local community zones that highlight the contribution of local soldiers. Commonwealth Bank CEO Ian Narev shared at the opening ceremony the bank’s war story in Albury, having opened its branch on the Border in 1914 and seeing its strongroom turned into storage for bombs and artillery, as well as providing care packages and financial access to the service personnel. The CEO of Telstra Andrew Penn also recognised the 3800 national telecommunications employees who served in the war as tech staff, engineers, and their dangerous role in keeping communication lines open on the active fronts. These stories and more can be seen in the exhibition. Visit www.spiritofanzac. gov.au

Prime Minister Abbott backs Mirabella's push for Indi By ERIN SOMERVILLE PRIME Minister Tony Abbott has made a show of his support for Liberal Indi candidate Sophie Mirabella during his visit to the electorate on Friday morning. Mr Abbott was in Wodonga to open the travelling Spirit of Anzac Centenary Exhibition, and was greeted by former Indi MP Ms Mirabella. She later joined the Prime Minister and Farrer MP Sussan Ley, who was acting on behalf of the Minister for Veteran’s Affairs, at a door-stop interview following the exhibition’s launch. The Prime Minister backed Ms Mirabella’s attempt to reclaim the Indi seat. “It is great to be here with Sussan today representing the Minister for Veterans Affairs, and also with my friend and former colleague Sophie Mirabella and it would be nice

to have her back in the parliament,” Prime Minister Abbott told the media. “I’ve known Sophie for well over a quarter of a century, she’s a great comrade, I hope to welcome her back into parliament. “There is unfinished business obviously here in Indi and I was always expecting Sophie to want to have another go.” Mr Abbott refused to speculate on whether Ms Mirabella would be offered a cabinet position if re-elected in the next election. “You’re asking all of us to get a bit ahead of ourselves. “It’s always a tough fight to win back a seat, certainly if you want a very effective Member of Parliament I think it’s important to have someone who is a part of a government, or a potential government, but it’s always tough to win back a seat.”

100 for Mavis NEW centenarian Mavis Scott has led an exceptional, happy life and has a unique perspective on the reasons behind her impressive longevity. “I’ve got family around me, I’m a good sleeper, I get interested in things and I play sport a lot,” she said. Mavis celebrated her 100th birthday on Tuesday 1 September, surrounded by her children, grandchildren and close friends at East Albury’s Murray Gardens Retirement Village. “We celebrated with a lovely meal and a few speeches,” her daughter Kerrie said. Mavis also received a congratulatory telegram from Queen Elizabeth II, which was read out at the lunch along with messages from GovernorGeneral Sir Peter Cosgrove, Prime Minister Tony Abbott, and NSW Premier Mike Baird. The milestone was the perfect opportunity to get the entire family together to celebrate Mavis’s life and the impact that she has had on each of them. “She has a wonderful sense of humour,” Kerrie said. “She has strong opinions and is a disciplined person but is very easy to get along with.” Mavis has lived in rural New South Wales her entire life, growing up in Wauchope and working as a teacher before marrying husband Bob in 1939. The couple had five children and ran a renowned cattle stud on their family property ‘Glen Elgin’ before building a house at Henty, where Mavis spent many happy hours cultivating her beautiful garden.

Mavis Scott celebrated her 100th birthday at Murray Gardens last week. Picture: CONTRIBUTED “Mum and Dad created a home and garden that gave them a great sense of achievement and pleasure,” Kerrie said. Mavis has also been a keen sportswoman and developed a lasting love of lawn bowls in the 1960s. She went on to win the local women’s singles 19 times and even represented New South Wales in a national competition. “Doing what you want to do makes life enjoyable,” Mavis shared. After 65 years of marriage, Bob passed away in 2004 at the age of 91, and Mavis spent a few years managing their home in Henty before moving into Murray Gardens Retirement Village. The village was happy to help Mavis ring in her second century and she was thrilled that her family could come from all over New South Wales to help her celebrate the milestone.

THE Liberal Party candidate for the Federal seat of Indi Sophie Mirabella is petitioning Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull to use areas in the North East as testing grounds for the new NBN satellite that is due for launch in October. Ms Mirabella listed areas such as Whitfield, Beechworth, and Stanley for the trial. The NBN’s first dedicated satellite “Sky Muster” is scheduled for launch on 1 October, with the target of providing download speeds of up to 25 megabits per second to 200,000 premises in remote and regional Australia. When the satellite is settled into orbit, a testing period will begin and run through until at least May next year. Ms Mirabella would like to see

A rare insight into our migrants RARE photographs of Wodonga’s past will go on public display for the first time at Arts Space Wodonga throughout September. The photographs from the Wodonga Historical Society have been developed from the glass plate negatives of Louis Haeusler, part of the Haeusler family collection within the permanent care of the Wodonga Historical Society. The Discovered exhibition tells a story of early settlement in Wodonga from early pastoral settlement through to the late 20th century and includes the important migration chapter of German farming families who migrated from South Australia to North East Victoria. The exhibition covers several generations, including Alf Haeusler, the photographer’s only child who donated the glass plate collection to the historical society. It highlights an important local family collection as well as the integral role of the Wodonga Historical Society in recording and preserving the district’s history and acting as custodian for the heritage of the Wodonga region. “Louis Haeusler - bush carpenter, spiritual seeker, amateur photographer, member of a German farming community, writer of love letters, groom in a scandalous marriage, doting single father to a disabled son - what a guy, what a life,” Museums Australia (Victoria) representative Kitty Owens said. “The exhibition is a great example of the wonderful stories and intriguing photographs and objects cared for by local voluntary groups like the Wodonga Historical Society, and the lovely exhibitions that can be presented by community collections in partnership with local government, such as Arts Space Wodonga.” Arts Space Wodonga curator Simone Nolan said the unique images pro-

The project has been an outcome of a successful partnership between Arts Space Wodonga and Wodonga Historical Society. It has been a successful recipient of the Museums Australia Victoria Roving Curator program of 2014 and the Victorian Multicultural Commission, Multicultural Festival and Events funding for 2015. The exhibition will be opened by Ms Owens, on Friday 4 September, and continues until 26 September. An exhibition presentation will be held on Saturday 5 September, at 10am.

CWA hits domestic violence

Little Athletics is alive and thriving on the Border. 144040

Dreamy track is full of hope THE new $1 million track at the Alexandra Park Athletics Complex was the star attraction at the Little Athletic’s gala day on Saturday. The track in Albury’s Cadell Street now boasts a new international standard IAAF Class track surface, as well as a new throwing cage for discus, spot put, and hammer throw. The complex is home to two little athletics groups, Albury Little Athletics Club, and Lavington/Jindera Little Athletics Club. It is also home to Albury Athletics Club for senior athletes. AlburyCity mayor Kevin Mack officially opened the track, and said the council was proud of the work

that had been done to improve the athletics complex. “I encourage anyone interested in getting their children involved in athletics to go and take a look because it is a great activity for kids,” Cr Mack said. Athletics Advisory Committee chairman Cr Daryl Betteridge said the revamped track had received an international accreditation of class two - the highest class possible without being attached to an Olympic or world championship training facility. “This is a great facility for the community and I encourage everyone to go and have a look and enjoy the gala day on 5 September,” Cr

Betteridge said. Albury Little Athletics president Brett Schofield said the gala day would be a chance to show off the new facility in a fun, communityfocussed way. “Ultimately, we want to inspire all kids to give little athletics a go and having the new facilities is a great platform for that. We encourage all kids of all ages and abilities to get down and get involved,” he said. “We have a focus on achieving personal bests, which is why the sport has always been so popular.” Check out our online gallery of the Gala Day at www.alburywodonga.starcommunity.com.au

THE CWA Albury Evening Branch is calling for greater support and funding for victims of domestic violence in regional and rural communities as part of its annual awareness week campaign. The campaign, which kicked off on 5 September, partners the CWA’s 400 NSW branches with Rape and Domestic Violence Services Australia to inform regional and rural residents suffering domestic violence about available services, as well as raising funds. With 19 of the top 20 worst local government areas for domestic violence lying in regional and rural areas, the Albury CWA is eager to lend a hand to the cause. “Communities like Albury are known for being close-knit however unfortunately, this can sometimes work against someone who is experiencing domestic violence,” Albury CWA Evening Branch president Kate Schilg said. “The services are often limited in regional areas, and where they do exist, often there can be a personal connection with the emergency service provider, such as the local police officer, doctor or hospital worker. “This can result in a reluctance to seek help by the person experiencing the violence or for that matter the person who is using the violence in their relationship.” Albury Evening CWA Branch hosted a stall at the LibraryMuseum at the

The monies raised will be donated to Rape and Domestic Violence Services Australia to operate the national 1800 RESPECT phone and online counselling service - available to anyone in Australia whose life has been impacted by domestic violence or sexual assault. According to Rape and Domestic Violence Services Executive Officer Karen Willis, funding is essential for the 24-hour services so that people can seek help confidentially and know that their calls will be answered. “We fielded some 55,000 calls in the last year from individuals experiencing domestic violence and sexual assault, however a further 18,000 went un-

answered due to a lack of funding and support,” she said. “Awareness of domestic violence and its terrible impacts are very much part of current community debate and we are very pleased to have the support of the CWA of NSW. “Their reach into the heartland of our state provides a vital opportunity to raise awareness, improve services and change attitudes.” In addition to fund-raising at a branch level, the CWA of NSW will also be partnering with Rape and Domestic Violence Services Australia to provide professional development opportunities at various locations across rural NSW for individuals who encounter people who have experienced domestic violence in the course of their job.

WE ARE LOOKING FOR SOON TO BE RETIREES WHO’D LIKE TO PARTICIPATE IN A PAID DISCUSSION GROUP IN SEPTEMBER

FOR the students at Albury Wodonga U3A’s photography class, it is never too late to learn something new. The students may range in age from their mid-sixties through to 85, but age hasn’t curbed their enthusiasm and determination to master the art of photography. While a lot has changed from the days of film, the class proved they have quickly grasped modern technology with the latest exhibition of their work at the Albury Wodonga Community College. The 12-month course has taught the students to think differently about capturing a moment through the lens.

GETTING a child to concentrate is a battle shared by many adults, but one local teacher thinks she may have found an answer. The Border Christian College’s Years 2 and 3 teacher Heather McNamara has swapped the traditional school chairs for small balance discs known as ‘wiggle seats’ that help students to focus for longer periods of time. The teacher of 22 years conducted a trial this term of the new wiggle seats, which proved successful for those children who fidgeted and moved more than others The students are expected to benefit both physically and mentally, as the wiggle seats keep their brain stimulated, improves balance, and builds core muscles. Ms McNamara said she recognised the benefits the new concept was having. “They are concentrated on their movements and work,” she said. “They sit up straighter and there is a need to concentrate more.” The idea initially came about after Ms McNamara saw a high school in Melbourne introduce larger gym balls as seats for its students. While the balls weren’t suitable for the smaller Years 2 and 3 students, Ms McNamara found the wobble seats were just as effective in allowing children to be active while sitting at their desks, use their own natural kinaesthetic energy and need for movement in a positive way, and stimulate their concentration. Ms McNamara said the idea was being noticed by other teachers in the school. “Some of the teachers are very jealous and ask if I don’t want one if they can have it,” she laughed.

They’ll change your mind about anger

There are so many mouth-watering options on the menu at Monica’s Cafe and Restaurant. 138891 Picture: ADAM WILSON

Specialty dining at Monica’s By ERIN SOMERVILLE THOSE with dietary requirements can often feel like eating out is a hassle, and regularly avoid the enjoyable experience. The team at Monica’s Cafe and Restaurant feel everyone should be able to enjoy the treat of dining out, and pay special attention to looking after their customers with dietary needs. The business has cemented its reputation as a haven for diners with gluten intolerance, with the staff well-trained in catering to those with Coeliac disease.

From specific gluten-free fryers to avoid cross-contamination, and an entire separate menu dedicated to gluten free food, Monica’s Cafe and Restaurant is fast gaining appreciation from those with dietary requirements. But it isn’t just gluten free diets that the staff specialises in. The business is building itself to cater to more dietary requirements and lifestyles, including vegetarians, vegans, food allergies, dairy intolerance, and even those on a FODMAP diet. “I try and come out and talk

to the customer to see if we can accommodate,” Monica’s Cafe and Restaurant owner Monica Whitehead said. “We ask them what they can and cannot have. “We want to be accommodating and welcoming and help anyone on a particular diet. “We want to provide a service that no-one else is doing.” If you follow a special diet, head on down to Monica’s Cafe and Restaurant where the team are happy to work with you to give you an enjoyable and safe dining out experience.

FOR many, it doesn’t take much to lure out anger. Often, it can be a wasteful and counter-productive emotion to be constantly bearing. There are lots of books, articles, classes, and “how to” courses on how to help with anger management, all of them claiming to have the key information that’s needed to manage and control anger issues. The problem is that their basic assumption is wrong. If you manage your anger, the thinking goes, that means you’re not getting rid of your anger, just learning how to continuously control and manage these bad feelings. The feelings are permanent; they never go away, so you’re bound to get angry again if you don’t manage them properly. This approach simply does not work, because it just perpetuates anger instead of resolving it. Anger is a perfectly normal and natural feeling that everyone experiences from time to time, but it is not a terribly useful emotion. When anger becomes a habit or takes over life to the point where you are struggling or facing negative consequences, it has crossed the line to become a true problem. Some of the symptoms of problem anger include: Anxiety or nervousness. Sweating, rapid heart beat, and rapid breathing. Headaches and changes in appetite. Muscle tension, twitches, and general restlessness. Feeling irritable and bad-tempered. Difficulty sleeping.

Help control your anger at Riverina Mind Design.

· Difficulty dealing with criticism. from people and activities you · Withdrawing normal enjoy. poor concentration, and forgetful· Confusion, ness. That anger may have started in one of a number of different ways. Maybe it’s holding on to a minor event, carrying the resentment around and letting it grow until it eventually erupts. Or, maybe it’s been a tough day at work and everything you encounter that evening is irritating and wearing on your nerves. Another common occurrence is anger that is connected with alcohol or drug use. At Riverina Mind Designs, learn to change the way you think and react, to stop being so angry. Regardless of how the anger started or how it comes out in your life, the solution to this problem does not lie in learning how to manage or control the feelings. Instead, the solution is to identify the old, automatic thought patterns and behaviours associated with anger, and set about re-training your mind to create new thought patterns and behaviours that are more calm, reasonable, and centered. NLP and hypnotherapy take a different approach to dealing with anger issues. Instead of trying to manage and control anger, these techniques teach how to resolve anger and get rid of it so you can deal with events in a way that is more conscious and reasonable. The practitioner accesses your conscious mind and unconscious mind, helping to develop new thought processes and behaviours that prevent you from becoming overwhelmed with emotion and anger. Because Riverina Mind Designs combination of NLP and hypnotherapy are so direct and so effective, they can usually help get the wanted results in a very short period of time. Most clients are successful at resolving their anger issues in as few as two or three hour-long sessions. These sessions may be individual, joint with a partner or spouse, or a combination of these. Mind, Body & Soul Art exhibition is a fund-raiser Advertising Feature

CAREVAN Foundation founder Dr John Brabant is getting a bit of help from his friends for a major fund-raiser for the group. Dr Brabant, a well-known local orthodontist, has called on two very talented cousins to help with an art exhibition to be held next month. The Carevan Art Exhibition to be held later this year at a venue to be announced will feature the works of well-known artists photographer Melinda Moran and painter Lisa WilkesHunter. Melinda is well-known for her beautiful photographs of landscapes from interesting perspectives including her breath-taking photographs of the world as seen from The Orb Weavers Web - reflecting the beauty of the world from the web. Each of those finished photographs captured a kind of fairytale and decorative pattern. Melinda used a special lens, and hours and hours of time to capture the exact image she wanted through a pinhole sized water-drop on a spider’s web. Lisa Wilkes-Hunter is equally talented after receiving a Diploma of Fine Art at Seaforth Technical College, majoring in photography. Wilkes-Hunter’s experimentation on the journey to develop a unique, identifiable, form of expression was eclectic and unrestrained. For reasons that were not apparent

Using imagination, and creative energy, she gave them new life and purpose. Dr Brabant said the event was aimed at helping fund the important projects that the Carevan runs and is the latest brainchild of the man who came up with the idea over a bottle of wine. Now The Carevan Foundation helps to feed the homeless and disadvantaged of rural Australia and while the first was begun in Albury Wodonga, there are now several independent vans running in other locations around NSW and Victoria. Five nights per week the Carevan goes out and feeds people in Albury and Wodonga - 350 meals per week are donated to those in need and 400 volunteers are involved. Personal toiletry packs, street swags, blankets and a mobile book library form part of the Carevan Project. Until that fateful bottle of wine and the newspaper article he was reading at the time, entitled “It’s easier to turn away than care” Dr John Brabant was just a regular orthodontist working in rural Australia for almost 30 years. Now as well as being an orthodontist he helps promote the Carevan Foundation which is also under the watchful eye of foundation CEO Di Mant. It’s the perfect time for people to experience everything a snow experience can offer, from tobogganing, taking learn to ski or snowboard lessons, to dogsled tours, as well as the great cafes, restaurants and entertainment.”

Rodney set to visit beautiful Norfolk HAVE you been to Norfolk Island? If you haven’t - it’s time to go ... (if you have - then it’s time to go again!) Norfolk Island is a tiny 8km x 5km island located between Australia and New Zealand in the middle of the South Pacific Ocean. Just over two hours flying from Sydney or Brisbane the island boasts a pristine environment with beautiful beaches, a rugged coastline, world heritage convict site and National Parks and Reserves dotted with the iconic Norfolk Island pines. As well as being alive with history, the island boasts a strong sense of community and Islanders are warm and welcoming to visitors and proud to show off their island. Polynesians were on Nor-

folk at least 800 years before it was ‘discovered’ by Captain Cook in 1774. When Port Jackson was settled in 1788, Norfolk was only a few weeks behind and until 1855 it was twice used as a penal colony and became known as ’hell in the Pacific’. After 1855 prisoners were sent to Tasmania and in 1856 Queen Victoria handed the island over to the descendants of the mutineers from the HMS Bounty, who had outgrown their adopted Pitcairn Island. About a third of the present population is descended from the 194 Pitcairners and their Tahitian wives who arrived on the island on 8th June of that year. Norfolk Island today welcomes visitors year round who want to enjoy this little piece of paradise.

There is so much to see and do. Beautiful scenery, food bursting with local flavour, friendly locals and a myriad of tours and attractions for you to enjoy. The weather is mild year round with temperatures ranging from 24C to 28C in the height of summer and 19C in winter. In April 2016, Rodney Vincent will be making his seventh visit to Norfolk Island with Go See Touring. As usual a packed week of touring, dinners and shows is planned and as usual expect lots of fun and laughter on one of Rodney’s tours. Why not join him when he visits this beautiful destination? Give the friendly team at Go See Touring a call on 1300 551 997 for details.

Enjoy Vietnam’s culture and beauty sometimes up to three times a day for their meal supplies. This regularity of visitation ensured that, while maintaining a high level of freshness of their produce, they also maintained a high level of socialisation and interaction with their fellow countrymen. Fortunately, this interaction still prevails today. It is also pleasing to outsiders to be able to experience daily routines such as visiting the local parks early in the morning, particularly in the bigger centres such as Ho Chi Minh and Hanoi, and observe the old men sitting alongside their birds in wicker cages. Beginning their days, the birds engage with each other, as do the old men with their long-time friends; they have probably done this same thing every morning of their later lives. There are probably not many countries, particularly of those in southeast Asia, that have such an engaging population. Indeed, very few tourists return from Vietnam without a lifetime memory or a great desire to revisit. I am very pleased to say that both Noelle and I fall into this category. We have travelled extensively through Vietnam during the last

By BRENDON MAHONEY IT HAS only been a relatively short time, 20-30 years, that Vietnam has really opened its doors to foreign travellers. Initial strict restrictions to internal travel immediately after the “American War, which ended inthe mid-’70s, have gradually been relaxed. And to the travellers’ delight today we find a country that welcomes tourism, recognising that it fosters growth. Historically, Vietnam has been involved in conflict for centuries. Because of its geographical location and its extensive sea border, Vietnam has been the target of invasion and occupation since before Christ. After all these conflicts Vietnam has emerged as a country of lovely people, stunning scenery, great climate and wonderful food. The Vietnamese culture is enriching to the outsider. Their family structure is loving and respectful and food plays an important role in their society. Up until a decade or so ago when westernisation really began, appliances such as refrigerators did not exist. This meant that families had to visit local markets

By TANIA PHILLIPS

Come and enjoy the best of Vietnam with TravelManagers 143986 twenty years and we derive great satisfaction from hosting guests on our small group journeys. There is a correlation to food, an alignment we believe is crucial, because of the importance of food to every facet of life in Vietnam. A visit to the local market early in the morning gives a not-to-be beaten opportunity to engage with real locals. Sitting down to a bowl of pho with a market trader and their family or their workers is a satisfying experience. As part of our re-entry into providing tailored travel arrangements to clients we are pleased to advise that we operate several trips to Vietnam

IT’S not every day two of the world’s most recognised faces come to Melbourne but that’s just what’s happening later this year when first Hugh Jackman and then Oprah Winfrey come to town. Martin’s Travel Group have put together packages to make sure the people of Albury Wodonga don’t miss out on either of these huge events. Just last week it was announced that Hugh Jackman would be coming home to Australia for his concert tour - Broadway to Oz. The event on 25 November is selling fast - as you would expect but Martin’s have secured pretty impressive tickets - Category 1 Seating - as well as organising a luxury coach for the trip down and back for $258.00 per person. This is definitely an event that doesn’t happen every day. Hugh Jackman is a Golden Globe, Emmy and Tony award-winner and this high-octane show takes audiences on a journey through his life so far from his early days in outback Australia to his vast musical theatre triumphs and the first time he wielded Wolverine’s claws in X-Men. Jackman croons, twirls and shimmies through several medleys, in-

cluding stunning tributes to classic musicals. A state-of-the-art lighting, sound and video production and a vast company of 150 musicians, singers, dancers and choir will support Jackman’s showmanship and infectious Aussie charm. And if that wasn’t enough, just days later, 2 December, the first lady of international television Oprah Winfrey brings her multi-city arena tour ’An Evening With Oprah’ to Melbourne. Oprah will take to the stage, bringing her personal story and insights to life in a one-of-a-kind intimate evening. Through the power of media, she has created an unparalleled connection with people around the world for more than 25 years. Her accomplishments as a global media leader and philanthropist have established her as one of the most respected and admired figures today. Martin’s package, $290 per person, includes luxury coach travel and category three seating. For more information on either of these trips, phone 02 6040 4400 or visit Martin’s at 66 Fallon Street, Albury, 9am - 5pm Monday to Friday.

Movie: Straight Outta Compton Rating: MA15+ Length: 147 minutes I LOVE a good surprise, and the flick Straight Outta Compton has delivered a strong one. The biopic of NWA’s rise to fame, fall from grace, and dealing with life in the hood is more tender, emotional, and well-executed than the shoot ‘em up gangsta flick many were expecting. We take a step back to the mid-1980s, where the streets of Compton, California, are some of the most dangerous in the country and buzzing with the start of a rebellion. There are drive-by shootings, police brutality and discrimination by the law, and rife gangsta activity. So five young men decide to translate their experience of life in the hood to

life into music with attitude that upsets the authorities. Enter a band that revolutionised hip-hop, rap, and pop culture for generations ahead of them, and sparked a debate about life in the hood. The script does well to cover most of NWA’s landmarks, from tours, the death of loved ones, the AIDS epidemic, bankruptcy, the rise and fall of record labels, and even depicts the dark flaws, as well as warm and endearing sides to each character. The actors help bring dimension and weight to this filming. Jason Mitchell is stellar in portraying the controversial EazyE, and brings a heart-wrenching performance to the role in the rapper’s final days. Taking on the enigmatic Dr Dre is never easy, but Corey Hawkins manages to capture his soft side and passion for music that has

evolved despite living in a tough world. You can be forgiven for thinking Ice Cube had been cast as himself, with his son O’Shea Jackson Jnr stepping into his old man’s shoes for the role. For anyone who grew up with Boys in the Hood blasting from their speakers, this film is a must see. It is hard not to bop along to the beats you forgot about, or sing along to the ones you remember and not get an excited rush of nostalgia from days partying with NWA’s edgy tunes on the stereo. While the film doesn’t do much for feminism, with any female’s appearance usually requiring minimal clothing or an obligatory whinge about money, this biopic is important in recognising the group that started a musical and cultural revolution from the streets of Compton. - Erin Somerville

Weekly Real Estate Albury Wodonga’s Property Guide

Eaten out of house and home “The Weepa Protector Weep Hole Screen is a stainless steel screen that is simple for a home owner to install, and maintains the airflow of the building. Once in place pests and burning embers are unable to enter the building via the weep hole while the essential airflow into the wall cavity is maintained. As well as safeguarding against pests, the Protector screen is effective at preventing burning embers from entering your wall cavity during a bushfire.” The Weepa Protector Weep Hole Screens comply with the highest bushfire attack level (BAL) of AS3959. Sold in packs of 20, which include an applicator to make installation quick and easy, they are available at all good hardware stores including Bunnings and Mitre 10. 2. Check your windows and screens - unscreened windows and doors are an obvious entry point for a variety of pests. Even screened windows degrade over time as they are exposed to the elements or chewed at by rodents. Checking and replacing screens that are damaged on an annual basis is a good idea. “You can get different grades of screen from your hardware store, including ones that are more resistant which are relatively easy to install,” Mitch said. 3. Keep your bins and pantry tidy - unsecured food or food waste attracts all sorts of animals and insects including mice, ants and cockroaches.

Keeping these areas clean and secure is an easy way to make your home less appealing to pests. Whether inside or outside it is a good idea to use bins that are closed and secure. Regularly washing bins (even if lined) also helps. In the pantry use sealed containers to store food. Giving the shelves a wipe down once a season is also a good idea (it's also a good time to check the use-by dates). 4. Remove stagnant water from around the home - mosquitoes are one of the most irritating pests to contend with and you could be providing the perfect environment for these bloodsuckers without even knowing it. With a recent outbreak of Ross River Fever in Australia, now is a good time to do

everything you can to reduce mosquito populations. By walking around your house and yard and removing any containers where water can sit, mosquito populations can be significantly reduced. Storing watering cans, pots etc upside down so that water cannot pool is a good preventative measure. 5. Check and seal open beams and eaves - now depending on your DIY skills you may want to get some help or advice on this one, but possums and birds are often attracted to roof cavities. For these animals your roof represents a warm and dry space to rest or nest, but they can do a lot of damage. They can be very noisy and are also likely to attract other undesirable visitors such as hungry predators. To

prevent birds and possums establishing a home in your home you can check and seal any holes in and around your eves or beams. Mitch said that while some of the tips were obvious, coming into the warmer months it was a good time to remind people of the simple steps they could take to protect their home. “Most of the tips are easy to implement and take a relatively short amount of time - depending on your situation you could get it all completed in one afternoon,” Mitch said. “During summer we are all regularly reminded to remove debris from our yards and clear leaves from our gutters.“ Established in the early 1990s, Weepa Products’ focus is on developing innovative-patented products to solve particular problems with weep holes. Weepa’s commitment to research and industry consultation has seen it grow into a specialised dynamic company making an important contribution to 'best practice’ in the building industry. Weepa also supply weep hole formers and covers for installation during the building process to create highly functional and attractive weep holes in cavity brick walls and rendered panel. For more information about Weepa Products and the Weepa Protector visit their website -www.weepa.com.au.

AUSTRALIA is home to many invasive insects and animals whose impact can range from a minor annoyance to being dangerous and financially devastating. As summer approaches, Weepa Products is encouraging everyone to take some simple steps to help protect their home and loved ones from pests. Weepa Products, Australian leaders in weep hole protection engineering, understand that people’s homes are their most valuable asset and want to help people protect them from pests. Weepa Technical Officer, Mitch Flint said while most people found insects and pests annoying, many didn’t necessarily look at addressing the issue until damage had been done to their home. To help, Weepa Products have come up with a checklist - the top five things people can easily do themselves to protect their home from pests. 1. Screen your Weepholes - weep holes are located on brick dwellings, spaced evenly along the bottom of the brick walls as well as around windows and doors. “They are important and allow for drainage and ventilation but they are also an entry point for pests including mice, rats, snakes, cockroaches and other creepy crawlies. Leaving them open is not as obvious or visually welcoming as leaving your front door open but it has practically the same effect,” Mitch said.

Winnebago owner’s delight THIS lovely three-bedroom home has a very long and very high carport-style structure which will keep your caravan, motorhome, or yacht undercover with plenty of additional storage space. In addition, there is a double-width garage with a single roller door. There is also a set of driveway gates at the front boundary, and a second set further in which allows for plenty of secure parking. All three bedrooms have built-in robes and ceiling fans. Ducted cooling and gas heating provide year-round comfort, and the western-facing windows all have external canvas awnings for summer. Living space includes a generous lounge, dining area, and family room. The modern kitchen has two fridge spaces, a gas cooktop, electric oven, and a dishwasher. Two long undercover outdoor living areas provide plenty of room to entertain, and the low-water usage gardens look spectacular and provide privacy.

THE Reserve Bank of Australia decided to keep interest rates on hold at 2.00 per cent at its September board meeting. REINSW President Malcolm Gunning says we are seeing the first signs of the property market starting to stabilise. “Clearance rates are beginning to come off and prices are starting to steady,“ Mr Gunning said. “The public are listening to the Reserve Bank Governor and the APRA recommendations, which have seen an increase to deposits for investors, higher interest rates and affordability tests, are filtering through.“ The official cash rate has fallen 275 basis points since November 2011, with the RBA cutting interest rates twice in 2013 in May and August and at its February and May meetings this year. The RBA will next meet on Tuesday, 6 October 2015.

Local Sport Great Ocean bike ride is calling them By CRAIG MCMILLAN - BENDED ELBOW CYCLING TEAM THIS weekend’s Amys Gran Fondo Cycle Ride taking in the Great Ocean Road should prove to be a fantastic weekend of cycling for a large contingent of Border riders heading to the event. The opportunity to ride in large groups on closed roads along the magnificent Great Ocean Road is a unique proposition and one that has many riders training hard to make the most of the event. As a key fund-raising and safety awareness event for the Amy Gillet Foundation, the weekend is a bitter-sweet reminder of the beauty and frailty of cycling, with thousands of riders from around the world sharing their enjoyment of cycling over a challenging 120-kilometre course, while honouring the memory of Amy Gillett, taken tragically in a training accident in 2005. With the key purpose of the Amy Gillett foundation to reduce incidence of injury and death, the weekend provides a unique opportunity for cyclists to ride together as a reminder to everyone about road safety, regardless of vehicle, and to return home safe after each journey. As a Gran Fondo, or “sporting” ride, the event is not a race, but a safe timed opportunity to each year take on your personal challenge. This year’s event has a special reward for the top 25 per cent of each category automatically qualifying for next year’s Masters World Championships to be held in Perth. A number of the Bended Elbow Cycling Team are riding in the event targeting qualification, which along with the National Masters events to be held in Griffith in 2016, will make for a special year of racing. The event has already built a cult following, with legions of new riders attracted to cycling through one of the many groups that train together to take on the challenge. The Border has one such group of riders, The Jones Street Cycling Club, who have been regular riders in the event, forming the centrepiece of their sporting and social calendar. Juggling full-time jobs, family commitments and winter weather, The Jones Street Cycling Club has been training indoors and out to set new best times and bragging rights for the summer. Although many of The Jones Street Cycling Club are accomplished racers, it’s the improvement and achieving goals that give bragging rights, not just the fastest. With warmer weather coming and great Border roads, now is the time to get out cycling, and keep looking out for each other so every journey is a safe one.

Lavington lines up By TANIA PHILLIPS LAVINGTON moved a step closer to the Ovens and Murray football grand final with a 62-point win over Wodonga Raiders in Saturday’s qualifying final at Bunton Park, North Albury. They will take on minor Premiers Albury this weekend after beating the Raiders 17-15 (117) to 7-13 (55). Adam Prior kicked six as Lavington game home with an 11-goal second half - while restricting their opponents to just 2-8 in the second half. The Raiders will now take on last year’s losing grand finalists, Yarrawonga. Yarrawonga defeated North Albury 14-17 (101) to 6-6 (42) in the elimination final at Norm Minns

Oval, Wangaratta on Sunday. They were dominant from the start, getting off to an 18-point lead in the first half - only inaccurate kicking (seven behinds) preventing it from being even bigger. Kane Pettifer kicked five for the match, while Brendan Fevola chimed in with four. Almost 4000 people attended the two days of football action. In front all day, Wodonga held on to defeat Lavington 56-39 and move through to the second week.
