UNDER the wings of a gleaming Macchi MB326H naval-service jet is the start of an evolving war memorial at the Cranbourne RSL. The Forgotten Warrior Memorial is dedicated to Australian servicepeople who were killed during training exercises outside of wartime. No other such tribute exists in Australia - the names of several thousand such victims are not even listed at the National War Memorial, RSL sub-branch president John Wells said. The monument will be dedicated at a public ceremony on 30 August, attended by surviving widows with a “shared grief”. “We’ve had this huge cost of lives - men, women and children. They deserve better and as a society, we need to be better,” Mr Wells said. “Those families have a grave somewhere, yes. But they don’t have a place to come together with other families who suffered the same sort of loss.” Roz Fordham, whose first husband RAAF Flight Lieutenant Steve Carter is named on the memorial, says it was helpful to people who hadn’t had a place for “memory and reflection”. Lt Carter had been killed as a pilot in a mid-air collision between two Macchis during Roulettes training in East Sale on 15 December, 1983. Ms Fordham said the Roulettes had been practising for their air shows, a week before most personnel left for the Christmas break. “They were all very experienced pilots, and I understand and believe that what happened was an accident. “I hope (the memorial) is helpful to all who have lost someone in the service of their country and who have not had a place for memory and reflection because the loss didn’t occur in wartime.” The Macchi on display in Cranbourne took 10 years to be sourced in parts and restored by volunteers in a warehouse at Station Street. The memorial’s plaques state a quarter of the 97 Macchi training planes that went into national service since 1970 had crashed. Named are each of the eight young pilots killed in the aircraft. “They are all young men - people who were promoted once or twice. None of senior rank,” Mr Wells muses. “No glory but tragedy in their deaths.” Continued on page 3

Danger to the public By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS AN intellectually-disabled man has been labelled a danger to the public after pleading guilty to a plethora of theft and driving offences including a terminated police pursuit and a drug-drive crash. Romulus Puni, 29, with an IQ below 70 and a chronic ice addiction, allegedly crashed a car on a median strip on the South Gippsland Highway, Cranbourne North in August 2013, a court was told on Monday (24 August). After being hospitalised, the Dandenong man was charged with driving while impaired by drugs, namely ice, driving while suspended and careless driving. He told police at the time he’d fallen asleep after being awake for the past 36 hours. In March 2014, Puni allegedly tried to evade a police car activating lights and sirens through Dandenong side streets. At one point he was observed turning into the dead-end Ross
Street at 75 km/h, causing police to terminate the pursuit, police prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Richard Symmons told a court. Puni allegedly escaped on foot through paddocks before police arrived at the vehicle, and denied any involvement during a police interview. He pleaded guilty to dangerous driving while pursued by police, failing to stop a vehicle by request and driving while suspended. In August 2014, he was charged with handling a stolen i-Phone 4s, which he told police he’d bought for two points of ‘shard’ or ice. He was also charged that month over the theft of a Noble Park fruit and vegetable business’s van, which he and a co-accused painted to hide the business’s decals. In October, he allegedly ran a red light in Henry Street Pakenham, was driving while disqualified, driving an unregistered vehicle and trailer and driving with false plates. Puli also pleaded guilty to two petrol drive-offs within minutes in
different vehicles at an Officer servo in November; one of the vehicles had a stolen number plate. That day, he drove - while disqualified - to Pakenham police station to be interviewed for a separate matter. There, he was identified by the servo manager who was dropping off CCTV footage of the thefts. In January, he was charged with speeding at 95 km/h in an 80km/h zone on Wellington Road Mulgrave. During the time of those offences, he was a disqualified or suspended driver. Puni was already in custody, having been recently jailed by the County Court for five years and four months - with a non-parole period of two years and nine months. Defence lawyer Nadine Daniel told the court on Monday that Puni wanted to resolve all the outstanding matters. She said her client had an acquired brain injury from a serious assault in 2013 as well as a pre-existing developmental disorder which
made him prone to negative peer influence. The Samoan-born accused was raised by his uncle and aunt in New Zealand due to his mother using substances; his father was unknown. His Australian visa was “at risk” and would be “cancelled in due course”, Ms Daniel told the court. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said he had to be careful not to create a “crushing” sentence on top of Pinu’s already substantial jail term. He described Puni as an “appalling driver” who was a danger to the public, and had been before the County Court thrice in 10 years. Mr Vandersteen noted that Puni’s passenger thought she’d die during the Dandenong police pursuit. Puni was jailed for 12 months, of which eight months would be served concurrently with his County Court sentence. He was also fined $1500, disqualified from driving for three years and ordered to pay $450 compensation for the stolen van.
Police to keep score on Grand Final revellers By LACHLAN MOORHEAD A POLICE operation targeting drink-drivers over Grand Final weekend will be heavily enforced in Casey, Cardinia and Dandenong. Operation Scoreboard will run state-wide from 1 to 4 October but will be strongly focused in Melbourne’s outer south-east, where Acting Senior Sergeant Pat Green from the Casey Cardinia Highway Patrol said a lack of public transport sees a rise in the likelihood of drink-driving. “We got an intelligence brief and our analysts looked at previous Grand Final weekends, and now because it’s a public holiday people are likely to be drinking more,” Act Sen Sgt Green said. “And in places like Cardinia, and Casey, which are further removed from town and where public transport
isn’t great, people rely on cars.” With Grand Final Friday being gazetted as a public holiday, Act Sen Sgt Green said the Casey Highway Patrol was getting on the “front foot”, targeting the three neighbouring south-eastern municipalities. “Because Casey has been identified as a high risk Local Government Area for road trauma we’ll be getting the lion’s share of assistance outside our division,” he said. “We will target drivers causing road trauma, drink, drug, speeding, mobile phones, not wearing seatbelts ... there’s a huge emphasis on this area and the coverage will be 24/7.” Operation Scoreboard will include patrols of both marked and unmarked cars, with packaged liquor outlets to be regularly monitored.

Some of the other fatalities were attributed to mental fatigue. So far Mr Wells has collated about 300 names of the fallen trainees through newspaper archives. They died in incidents like a collapsed jack, a truck roll-over, an unintentionally exploded grenade or a sunken submarine. Some of the incidents such as those involving Black Hawk helicopters are still well known, other incidents sank without a trace. “Training is a dangerous place to be,” Mr Wells said. “Yet if you’re killed in action, your name is on a war memorial. “If you die in training, there’s nothing. “None would remember them except their own families.” Mr Wells hopes the names of the missing fallen will be revealed as more bereaved families come forward. “We’re looking to name all of these people, every single person we can. “That’s why I say it’s the only memorial in Australia that will continue to evolve.” The dedication ceremony is at Cranbourne RSL, 1475 South Gippsland Highway, Cranbourne, on 30 August, at 2pm.

By GEORGIA WESTGARTH IN SIX years the Cranbourne Salvos Store has doubled in size and more than tripled in sales figures - and one volunteer has been there for it all. Former secondary school teacher Roy Fernandez from Cranbourne said when he first started selling secondhand books at the Cranbourne Homemaker Salvos Store six years ago, sales hit around $400 a month. Now the opportunity shop is selling more than $5000 in secondhand book sales alone each month. Mr Fernandez, who used to man the book corner, puts the huge rise in sales down to the population growth of Cranbourne. “More people have become aware that we sell secondhand books and maybe more people are reading,” he told Star News. The spacious store sells absolutely everything from furniture to electrical goods and Mr Fernandez said he served a lot of migrants who were looking to furnish their new home or rental property. “I enjoy selling and it’s not only the selling aspect - you are helping someone. “And you meet people and talk to them and get to know their lives - we get people from everywhere - Uganda, Afghanistan, India, Pakistan and they keep coming back after they have bought the necessities like a bed and a fridge,” Mr Fernandez explained. A week after the store was opened Mr Fernandez decided to offer his services as a volunteer and has been unpacking and selling the donated goods ever since - celebrating his six-year anniversary with colleague Marilyn Ryan. Ms Ryan from Cranbourne has notched up just over five years volunteering at the Cranbourne store, and said she loved her job.

With regular customers and lifelong work friends Ms Ryan, 66, said she could always rely on the younger staff members to help her with the computer. “I can’t use a computer but here at the Salvos I don’t need to - it’s been great, volunteering gets me out of the house and stops me from getting bored. “Plus I get to see customers leave with a big smile on their face,” she said.
But among all the goodwill and helping hands, Ms Ryan said often customers didn’t realise what the Salvos actually did. “Some people come in and seem to think that because we got the things for free, that they too should get the things for free. “And they ask why some items are priced so high and I explain that that’s not how it works and that they aren’t expensive at all,” she said. Celebrating National Op Shop Week along with the good work their
volunteers do, the Cranbourne Salvos Store held a morning tea to congratulate their staff on more than five years volunteering. Mr Fernandez said volunteering two days a week gave him a sense of satisfaction in his life. He said the organisation couldn’t operate without its thousands of hardworking volunteers. Victoria Police Assistant Commissioner Luke Cornelius made a special point to thank these family members when he attended the Southern Metro Division 3 Awards Ceremony last Thursday, where officers from throughout Casey, Cardinia and Dandenong were formally recognised with service medals and certificates. “I’m a dad. I’ve got a sevenyear-old daughter and a 13-year-old daughter and I’ve got a loving wife and I can’t do, and my colleagues can’t do what they do, without the love and support of their families,” Asst Comm Cornelius told the guests gathered at the City of Casey council chambers. “And our commitment and our sacrifice in service to the community is as much your commitment and your sacrifice. We miss birthdays, we miss special school performances, we miss the odd anniversary - we hope not to but we do. “There are those key points in our lives where our work life, our vocations, and our commitment to serving the community comes first and that comes at some cost to our families. “The acknowledgement of your loved ones in blue is also in part an acknowledgement of your service, your commitment and your sacrifice.” About 70 female and male officers from the three municipalities were recognised at the ceremony, with a range of service and bravery awards handed out. The importance of family and keeping loved ones safe was certainly a theme for the afternoon. When introducing the awards, Superintendent Russell Barrett made a particular mention of the work the Division 3 officers had been doing in relation to curbing family violence, working in a region where that type of crime was notoriously high. “We’re also state’s leaders in terms of reducing the trends around repeat victims of family violence and people who repeatedly perpetrate family violence crime onto their partners or children or family members,” Supt Barrett said. “It’s something that we are focused on here and I just want to

THE mayor of Casey, Mick Morland, states I am “well aware, the City of Casey is not politically aligned.“ Mick Moreland also states that the Bunjil Place project will create more than1200 jobs for locals during construction (Letters, News, 20 August, 2015). Well Mayor Morland, please show me the evidence? From what I am able to ascertain Bunjil Place, at this point in time, appears to have created little more than a handful of jobs. What new jobs will be created in addition to the small number of excavation, planning, construction and transport jobs we can see at present? I simply don’t believe that 1200 jobs will be created as claimed by our mayor and councillors. Ratepayers are entitled to see the evidence, Mick Moreland. Further, mayor Moreland, there is, in fact, evidence that Casey council is indeed influenced by right-wing political ideology. In 2014, three elected Casey councillors stood as endorsed Liberal Party candidates in the Victorian state elections. They were Amanda Stapleton, Geoff Ablett and Susan Serey. Cr Rosalie Crestani stood as a candidate for the Rise Up Australia Party. Casey council, and our mayor, supported Cr Wayne Smith’s ratepayer funded “junket“ to develop sister city links with Springfield Ohio, located in a well-known conservative Christian Bible belt. No one on Casey council, including the present mayor, has publicly taken a stand against the austerity policies and cuts which are behind unemployment and record levels of underemployment in Victoria today. Mr Hassani’s parents, who have regularly moved to evade their stalkers, told him to leave the country. “They had lost one son and didn’t want to lose another,” he says. He paid a people smuggler to get him to Indonesia, arriving in Australia in November with a United Nations humanitarian refugee visa. Mr Hassani lives with his sister and her family, saving from his meagre government allowance to send money to his parents. He has improved his English at refugee settlement agency AMES, and is currently taking a Certificate IV course in Justice. He expects to hit the books for a further four years. “I’m enjoying my studies,” he says. “I’m suffering from little income now but that’s just for four more years. “It’s not the rest of my life.”

A MAN accused of looting the former Dandenong Library site of about 100 kilograms of copper tubing has had his bail revoked. Mathew Leigh Horsfield, 34, of Cranbourne, appeared briefly in handcuffs in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Monday 24 August. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said Horsfield’s bail was revoked for allegedly possessing a drug of dependence and breaching bail conditions. Horsfield had been on bail for alleged burglary at the former Stuart Street library’s demolition site on 21 July.

A VICTIM of lawless violence in his homeland, refugee Mehdi Hassani aims to protect others from the same fate. Mr Hassani, 23, of Hampton Park, is studying a TAFE justice course in the hope of applying to join Victoria Police. “I was thinking what career would set me up. It would be very good to be a police officer. “I want others to avoid what happened to me.” He remains wounded by an awful experience that led him to flee for his life from Afghanistan. “The law is not upheld there. To be a police officer there was to be a threat to your life.” After a holiday, he and his brother were bundled into a car at gunpoint by kidnappers outside an airport terminal near the Afghan town of Shindand. The captors put bags on the siblings’ heads and drove for an hour. The car stopped, and they were told to push the car. Mr Hassani remembers telling his brother they would die unless they escaped. So they ran, tearing the bags from their heads. Bullets were fired. Mr Hassani lost sight of his brother, who he has not seen again since. Mr Hassani’s not sure if his captors were Taliban or a criminal affiliation. He had been threatened for several years beforehand due to his IT work with a foreign construction company and with American embassies. “I didn’t take the threats seriously until this happened,” he said. “It cost my brother’s life.” In the following weeks, his parents received

Murderer is jailed By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A HAMPTON Park man has been jailed for 21 and a half years for the “cowardly” murder of his de facto wife using a steel-framed chair. Steve Ray Cook, 24, appeared in the Supreme Court on 19 August over the fatal drunken attack on Sharnee Ngatai at their Willow Drive home. The 23-year-old victim was the mother of two of Cook’s children. On the night of 10 January 2014, Cook was awoken by Ms Ngatai and his cousin after he had consumed at his estimation 15 bottles of beer at their backyard party. In sentencing, Justice James El-
liott said “for no apparent reason” Cook became angry, punching and pushing the victim despite attempts by his female cousin to stop him. As Ms Ngatai lay “helplessly” on the ground saying “words to the effect of ‘help me’”, Cook picked up a steel-framed chair. He held it above his head and struck her with such force that one of the legs penetrated her brain. “Your crime was not only violent, it was cowardly,” Justice Elliott said. “You are a large man. Sharnee is not a large woman.” In a victim impact statement, Ms Ngatai’s father said he “fell apart
into a million pieces” after hearing of his daughter’s death. Ms Ngatai’s mother described that thinking of her daughter’s pain and suffering “at those hands” left her “unblinking for a long time”. The court had heard that the couple’s infant children had no memory of their mother. Justice Elliott took into account the impact of Cook being introduced to drinking as a 12-year-old by his alcoholic father and of his parents abusing alcohol in the family’s home. Cook had been previously convicted of about 20 offences between 2010 and 2012, including concur-
rent jail terms for two “brutal” attacks on Ms Ngatai while she was pregnant in 2011. She was hospitalised on both occasions. Eighteen months after his release from prison, Cook killed her. He had also previously assaulted two security guards at a McDonald’s restaurant, and abused and punched a bus driver. “You have already been given the chance to rehabilitate yourself,” Justice Elliott said. “You did not take it, with tragic consequences.” Cook was ordered to serve a nonparole term of 17-and-a-half years.
They’re good sports all over By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS REMEMBER the names of these two budding sports stars from Hampton Park Secondary College. Alefosio “Sio” Laki and Jacob Tavae, both of Hampton Park, are set to compete in their chosen sports overseas this year. In Sio’s case, deciding upon his favourite sport is difficult. The 18-year-old ambulant para-athlete has represented Samoa in in the 100 metre sprint and javelin at the Pacifica Games in Port Moresby, as well as winning bronze for discus at Australian junior championships. In state junior track and field championships this
year, Sio won gold in the discus and shotput events. He is ranked 27th in the world for discus in his paraathletic category F37. Sio has been selected in the Samoan squad to throw discus at world para-athletic championships in Doha in October. He hopes to qualify for the Rio de Janeiro Paralympics next year. He is training five days a week at Casey Fields, with the aim of lifting his personal best discus throw from 40 metres to 50 metres - which would put him in the mix with the best in the world. “I’ve just got to get my body stronger,” he says. Jacob meanwhile is head-
ing for an U16 Victorian schools team rugby tour of Ireland, the UK, Belgium and France. Due to health issues in his family, Jacob didn’t get seriously into the sport until high school. Since then he’s played for the state and broken through into the Melbourne Rebels’ underage teams and Endeavour Hills Eagles. Jacob, a sprightly runner who plays inside-centre and wing, hopes to win a place on the Rebels’ Super Rugby side. He says the game has provided “amazing opportunities” for his family already. “Rugby is my passion,” the Year 11 student says.

Terror case dropped By CASEY NEILL A HAMPTON Park man will no longer answer terrorism charges for his alleged role in an Anzac terror plot. Officers on 20 April charged Harun Causevic, 18, with conspiracy to commit acts done in preparation for terrorist acts, following pre-dawn counter-terrorism raids throughout Casey on 18 April through Operation Rising. The Australian Federal Police and Victoria Police this morning released a statement confirming that after assessing all available, admissible evi-
dence, the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions had decided there was insufficient evidence to continue the prosecution for this offence. The statement said that in this case, police took early action to ensure no threat to the community. “Police would rather the risk of a prosecution failing than the risk of members of the community being hurt or killed through no overt action,” it said. In July, Narre Warren teen Mehran Azami, 19, pleaded guilty to 19 counts of importing weapons and
three other charges and was remanded in custody to appear at the County Court on 22 October. The News reported in May that police charged Azami with importing more than 200 weapons - including AK-47 flick knives and tasers designed to look like iPhones. Police alleged Azami imported weapons for radicalised Muslim youth. A 15-year-old boy from Britain pleaded guilty to one count of inciting another person to carry out an attack at a service in Australia.
All together for service By CASEY NEILL THE new Ermha headquarters is more than an office space - it’s a community. And the Dandenong South space is increasing staff productivity and the not-for-profit’s ability to serve people in need throughout the south-east. Ermha supports people facing challenges resulting from a disability, mental illness, homelessness, or experiences of trauma or substance use to live the life they choose. Its 200-plus team members had been running between four buildings on Robinson Street in Dandenong to find space for a meeting, chat to a colleague or pick up a document. At the end of June they came together in a new head office in the Estate One precinct on the Princes Highway. “It’s actually been quite exciting for all the staff,” Ermha marketing and communications executive director Christine Thornton said.
“It’s created a new environment that’s more of a community, more of a family feel. “With the different sites we didn’t get that chance to integrate with all the other programs. “I feel like we have so much more productivity. “I feel like I’m much more productive having everybody around and being able to see where people are, so you can go have a conversation with them right away instead of being hidden in little spaces.” Ermha took the move as an opportunity to introduce hot-desking. “The exciting thing about that is all different levels of the organisation are working with everyone,” Ms Thornton said. “Because they’re sharing hot desks and they’re all in the same area, there’s a lot more cross-communication between the programs. “I feel like we’re providing more co-ordinated services.”
Authorities dropped a second charge of inciting terrorism overseas in relation to beheading a person in Australia. Police arrested the boy in April after intercepting encrypted conversation allegedly with an 18-year-old man in Australia. The boy, from Blackburn in northwest England, will be sentenced in September and cannot be named for legal reasons. She said the new space was bright and open, but had breakout rooms for when staff needed quite time or a client meeting. “The clients absolutely love it. They’re starting to feel very welcome,” Ms Thornton said. She said Ermha had been expanding at a rapid rate and outgrew its spaces. “It was never our plan to have four leases in four different buildings. It was just meeting demand,” she said.
“We couldn’t just go out and move our head office every time we got a new contract.” So Ermha signed a seven-year, $411,445 per annum lease for a 1349 square metre space at 81-125 Princes Highway. “We are still maintaining our dropin space at 65 Robinson Street,” Ms Thornton said. “We knew we still needed to maintain our representation in the CBD of Dandenong.”
Cafe tram on track COUNCILLOR Sam Aziz believes his plan to turn one of Melbourne’s iconic old trams into a cafe in Casey is still on its tracks despite reports the National Trust may not favour the idea. In a motion carried last Tuesday, Cr Aziz proposed that one of the disused W-Class trams be relocated to the Casey Fields sports facility in Cranbourne and turned into a cafe. A business approached Casey Council with the idea after reports that Public Transport Victoria (PTV) was looking for organisations to take on the historic trams. This week the ABC reported that the National Trust Acting Conservation manager Anna Foley said no more trams should be given away until PTV had outlined a proper strategy for them. But Cr Aziz told Star News on Wednesday that he had received clarification from Ms Foley, outlining that she wasn’t opposed to the idea, but wanted to ensure a strategy was in place before the trams were re-distributed. “This is at a preliminary stage, noone has made a move,” Cr Aziz said. “It’s in the discussion stage.” Cr Aziz said re-using one of the W-Class trams as cafe at Casey Fields had two key benefits, including using the proceeds to support under-privileged children. “We’ve got the space and there is a need for coffee facilities at Casey Fields and secondly, when we do get the tram and there may be a lease charged on the land we house it on, we can use the proceeds to assist disadvantaged kids that may want to get into sport,” he said.

With road safety campaigns and initiatives aimed at teenagers and P-plate drivers a constant in young people’s lives, it’s the work done by one community organisation that might be leaving the biggest mark. Teenagers Road Accident Group (TRAG) is a team of ex-
perts, victims and family members of loved ones who have been killed on Victorian roads. Taking their graphic and emotional accounts of road trauma to schools on the Mornington Peninsula and throughout Casey, the group pride themselves on providing students with personal stories and detailing just how many people are affected by road trauma. Project manager Cindy Last said since changing the way they conducted presentations the group had extended their
outreach across the south eastern corridor. “We have been able to present to 214 schools and more than 2000 students in just four days,� Ms Last said. Drivers under 25 years old account for 55 deaths and 1245 serious injuries a year according to a recent report from the Victorian Government, and on Wednesday 26 August TRAG managed to get their road safety message out to more than 300 secondary school students.

HE SAYS public speaking and writing aren’t his strong suits yet Ryan Gomez from Hampton Park will launch his book this September and mark his seventh year of motivational public speaking. “Writing isn’t something I wanted to do and public speaking is my weakest link but I wanted to get a message across to youth, business owners and people going through troubled times,” Mr Gomez told Star News. Growing up in India and moving to Australia aged 20, Mr Gomez said he had faced a lot of hardship in his life and felt he had something to offer others. “I knew I had a strong message to get across and I wanted to help people, so this book is about my journey - it’s how I overcome adversity,” he said. A Casey Radio host and City of Casey ‘Outstanding Achievement Award’ winner Mr Gomez said he had been writing his book ‘It’s Never Too Late’ for a couple of years, and hoped it empowered people to be their very best. “Every person in life has a truly unique gift that’s untapped and the message in the book shows readers that no matter what the circumstances are around you, release the gifts on to the world as the world needs to benefit from them and so must you in return,” he explained. Mr Gomez said his book was for those who constantly wanted to improve - something he strove for in his own life. “People would say you have a strong story and you need to let the world benefit from it so I decided to get private public speaking classes. “Through that I developed a lot of confidence, I put myself on the line, it took a lot of courage and a lot out of me to do that but if I can get over the fear of public speaking, I can write a book,” he said.

A part of literacy and numeracy week the school came dressed in their favourite storybook characters. The school’s Sue Tobin said the students wore amazing costumes. “We had a book parade as part of the
week-long celebrations which were aimed at highlighting the wealth of learning that occurs every day at school,” she said. The school was a walking fairytale with Sleeping Beauty, Very Cranky Bears, the Cat in The Hat and even Where’s Wally? “It was a wonderful chance for the whole school to celebrate our love of reading and for a short while to get lost in the wonderful world of our imagination,” Ms Tobin said.

Ten-Rose breeds tenderness and feed efficiency into its cattle and can set up beef operations in Australia, China, Japan, New Zealand and Brazil. Mountain Harvest Foods’ Anthony Failla didn’t see a long-term future for the family potato farm - established in 1946 - when he came on board in 2003. So he built a potato cake factory on the Mountain Road property, bought and relocated two established suppliers and got his sister Christina de Sousa on board. “We needed to be able to utilise 100 per cent of all the potatoes that were harvested,” he said. “At that time, our only customer was Woolworths and Woolworths were

only taking 70 per cent of all the potatoes we were harvesting. “They want it perfectly round, they want the right colour, the right soil colour. They only wanted potatoes between 120 grams and 350 grams. “This processing factory was an avenue for us to be able to utilise those out-of-specification potatoes, to the point now where we’re trying to grow more of the out-of-spec potatoes.” Farm turnover has grown from $230,000 a year in 2003 to $10 million today.
It created sweet potato chip and zucchini fries for national burger chain Grill’d and a skin-on chip to Lord of the Fries. “We do have to buy potatoes at certain times of the year from other farmers, but that’s going to increase,” Ms de Sousa said. “We’re going to need support from other farmers to work together with us. “If we can all work together as a community, we’ll all be rewarded for it.”
Training cash for Dayco upskilling By CASEY NEILL A HALLAM business is among the first in Australia to receive new training cash. Dayco Australia will use its $2000 Industry Skills Fund (ISF) grant to train two staff in its supply and logistics team. “We identified this training need for better materials management to help our manufacturing operation, which manufactures harmonic balancers for the automotive aftermarket,” managing director Arnold Mouw said. “A large part of our increased capacity is exported to Dayco US. “We are also a supplier to Ford original equipment at both Geelong and Broadmeadows plants, although most of our business today is aftermarket to customers such as Burson, Wesfil and Repco.” Dayco has a global network
of manufacturing facilities, distribution centres, technical facilities and sales offices. The Australian branch has been a major player in the country’s automotive original equipment and aftermarket sectors for more than 30 years, specialising in automotive power transmission and cooling system components. Victorian Senator Mitch Fifield said the $664 million Federal Government program was helping businesses to grow and compete in an increasingly global market, boosting productivity and competitiveness across the economy. “The ISF is targeted at small and medium-sized businesses that need to upskill or retrain their workers so their business can diversify or take advantage of new market opportunities,” he said. “Free skills advice is also
available for small and medium businesses. “Experienced advisers will work with eligible businesses to understand growth opportunity and identify skills needed to increase competitiveness.” Mr Fifield encouraged other businesses to apply for a grant. “Employers will be supported to decide what training is needed in their business, and which training provider they want to work with,” he said. “With better trained employees, Australian business will be positioned to diversify into new markets, adopt new technologies, enter export markets and create more jobs.” Under the ISF, businesses are required to contribute to the cost of training, and the government will cover the rest of the cost. Queen Kasey SHE has long become the Queen of Australian Country music - seven solo albums and a huge following around Australia. But Kasey Chambers is more than that - a mother, a voyager, a song writer whose music continues to surprise and grow - the consummate live performer. She’s also on her way with her band to the Hallam Hotel on 3 December. “I wasn’t interested in not sounding like me anymore,” Kasey Chambers shrugs, wrapping her hands around her coffee cup; the same hands that have received 29 music awards and raised three children. The same hands that pulled crayfish spines from their knuckles on Australia’s southern coast and hunted foxes under the Nullarbor’s endless blue sky. It’s 1999 and Kasey Chambers is 23 years old. She’s spent the past five years traversing the arteries of Australia, singing in a family band. They’ve performed to empty stools in deserted pubs and to dust-cloaked festival masses. They’ve slept in motels, in vans and on the road in the rain and snow. It’s been a long road and she’s been liv-

But as she’s stepping into the studio to record her first solo album, ‘The Captain’, she still can’t help feeling “naive, a little bit scared and a little bit excited.” Sixteen years later, these feelings still linger. “The newest album was very
much the same for me, because I didn’t quite know where it was going to go” she admits. “I had to let go a bit. I’m not good at that.” In 2014, Kasey Chambers released her seventh solo album, and enlisted the help of some local luminaries from Dan Kelly to Bernard Fanning and her dad Bill to pull the whole thing off. But despite finding new ways to craft her stories, Kasey Chambers is still inimitably her. From the red dust of her nomadic childhood to the surf coast where she’s raised her family, Kasey’s always maintained that her records have been a testament to “who (she) was at the time”. And her newest album is proof that she’s unwilling to settle for anything less. “I don’t want to write songs based on what I think people want to hear from me. I hope that in the end, this is what they warm to.” Kasey will bring her show to the Hallam Hotel, Princes Highway, Hallam, on 3 December. Phone 8786 0200. A part of the school’s literacy and numeracy week, grandparents day was celebrated on Thursday 20 August. Grandparents were invited to discuss how things were done when they attended school and compare what had stayed the same. SUB-LIEUTENANT Matthew Hine has gone from navy cadet to commanding officer. The Hampton Park 26-yearold is encouraging kids from Casey and Greater Dandenong to follow in his footsteps. Sub-Lt Hine is the Commanding Officer (CO) for the Training Ship (TS) Bataan Australian Navy Cadets (ANC) unit, based at the Monash Barracks in Dandenong. “We moved here last year in October,” he said. “We wanted to focus on the kids that were here first, so it was a solid group before we moved on. “We’re at a stage where we’re ready to recruit again. “Army cadets recruit heavily in Greater Dandenong, so we’re hoping to focus on Casey.” “We’ve got kids from as far away as Pakenham. I’ve got another girl from Mordialloc way.” Sub-Lt Hine said cadets learnt rope work, defence force ranks, leadership and unit structure. “When we go on camp,
we’ve done dragon boating, we’ve done sailing,” he said. “Power boats is something we focus on, and we’re very lucky that we get pretty good access to HMAS Cerberus for camps.” He started his 12 years with the ANC as a Hampton Park Secondary College student. “I was the training officer for a while and then my CO retired last year and I took over,” he said. “I’ve hit it young. “We opened it up to tender, and other staff in the ANC applied for it. “They’re older than me and much more experienced in other ways, but I’ve owned businesses and my management and leadership was what this unit needed to get it into a community stage.” TS Bataan had been at the school for 15 years and received government funding. “Now we’ve got to fund ourselves and seek out our own connections,” he said. Sub-Lt Hine has about 20 cadets, who march under a new banner provided by the National Servicemen’s Association of
Australia’s (NSAA) south-east sub-branch. “The banner gives us the ability to parade and be identified as TS Bataan not just navy cadets, or sometimes the public perceive us as Navy recruits,” he said. He said many cadets had social engagement difficulties. “Not everyone in this community wants to do sport, but they want to have an extra-curricular activity that’s engaging and exciting,” he said. “More than anything, they get a lot of friendship out of here.” Sub-Lt Hine would love to see them go into the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). “But at the end of the day, it’s youth development, so that they are better prepared for their careers,” he said. “We give them those skills to go out and be socially engaging and active.” Cadets can enrol from the year they turn 13 and are discharged at age 20. ABLE Seaman James Patrick was an undisciplined 14-yearold without a career path in mind. Now the Cranbourne 15-year-old is a Navy cadet with his sights set on a life at sea. Eighteen months ago the Cranbourne East Secondary College student joined the Training Ship (TS) Bataan Australian Navy Cadets (ANC) unit based at the Monash Barracks in Dandenong. “The reason I joined was because my parents thought I wasn’t disciplined enough,” James said. “They made me join to help me with that, and it’s been a lot of fun, too. “The people are just great, everybody’s so friendly. “There’s a lot of stuff I’ve done at cadets that I wouldn’t have done otherwise. and stuff on ships. “A clearance diver involves diving down looking for mines and disarming the mines.” He agreed that the latter sounded perilous. “It sounds fun, though,” he said. James has attended ceremonial events with the unit and training camps at HMAS Cerberus. “At first I didn’t really change but after I went on a camp it all turned around. I thought ‘maybe I can be disciplined’,” he said. “I’m doing a lot better at school now. I used to be the kind of kid that didn’t do his work and now I do everything.” He said the thought of serving during wartime was scary. “The combat system operator, they’re the ones that launch the missiles,” he said. “They can rip a ship in half. If you get shot with one of those missiles you’re gone!”

Cyclings Field of medals By JARROD POTTER REACHING the apex of world junior cycling for the second year in a row, Australian rising star Courtney Field showed she’s a future force to be reckoned with on international velodromes. Field, 18, from Berwick, starred in her second appearance at the UCI Junior Track World Championships - held this year at Astana, Kazakhstan - as she won two silver medals from her four events. Picking up the medals in the sprint - where she won the rainbow jersey last year - and the keirin, the
stellar achievement puts Field right up in cycling’s elite echelon. She went within a whisker of defending her junior world championship - won last year in South Korea - defeated in the gold medal bestof-three race by Germany’s Emma Hinze. Field lost the first race and went within a whisker of forcing a third and deciding race, but the German was too strong to the line to take the second victory and leave Field to take the silver. “I am really happy with getting silver," Field said, on the Cycling Australia website.
“You know I’m always going to be that little bit disappointed I didn’t get the gold but I did my best and Emma was just better on the day. “I was super happy with my qualifying time, it was an amazing time for me I was over the moon. “The same with my match sprints, I feel like I executed some really good races. I’ve learnt a lot in the past year.” She also claimed the silver in the women’s keirin for the second year in a row as a powerful charge to the line was only pipped by her German rival Hinze once again.
In the women’s team sprint, Field and Australian team-mate Tahlay Christie set an Australian record of 34.499 seconds in qualifying, earning them a spot in the bronze medal ride against Italy, but was pipped into fourth position. In the Women’s 500m Time Trial, Field finished sixth in a time of 35.537 seconds. Australia finished second on the medal tally with 12 medals across the five days of competition - four gold, five silver and three bronze, with the combined 12 medals the most won by any nation.

Through the pain barrier ... and they say it's worth it By JARROD POTTER VWFL DIVISION 1 - ROUND 18 EVERY foreseeable problem had confronted Cranbourne on Sunday, but the VWFL Eagles pushed through the pain to claim arguably the best win in its history. The Eagles were down to 17 on the field - after a player was red-carded through the second term. They were down to one fit player left on the bench for most of the second half after injury also dug in to the line-up. Cranbourne was down by 19 at the last change and playing the second-ranked VWFL Division 1 side all the way down in Geelong. But none of these roadblocks could stop the Eagles from continuing their amazing winning streak. It boiled down to two words that have defined their 2015 journey thus far. “Ruthless”. “Relentless”. The fourth quarter belonged to Cranbourne - stoppages, clearances, marks and most important - four crucial goals to put the side ahead in the dying seconds. Kirsten Mcleod opened the accounts before Steph Binder slotted the second, leaving the side down by 10. Stepping up as she always has this season, unbelievably her VWFL debut year, Hayley Wildes (two goals) unloaded with an absolute bomb. How else could you describe a kick from the 50-metre line that sailed through the posts and then some? Her kick left Cranbourne a point behind, before the side scrambled to draw level. Ash Fennell unloaded with a chaos-ball to the goal-line - unfazed by which side of the sticks it went through - to push the Eagles ahead before a tense three minutes had to unfold. Stoppage by stoppage Cranbourne eked the seconds off the clock. But eventually the Eagles emerged with the one-point win - its 13th in a row - leaving the coach extremely pleased with his side’s ability to stick it out and battle through all challenges. “That was unbelievable,” Cranbourne coach Kris Smith said. “I didn’t really get nervous but I tried to instil a belief into the girls this year. “Doesn’t matter what happens or where we are, we can win the game. If we stick to the processes and structures then we’re tough to beat. “We used the words Ruthless and Relentless - got to be stronger, harder for longer, got to be relentless on our attack in the final term.” The fitness base that has seen Cranbourne run over the top of both the Magpies and Tigers finals challengers for the crown the Eagles seek

Wildes, Danielle Hardiman, Tess McEvoy, Cara Moody and Bianca Jakobsson continued to put their hands up in the best while Tamara Tomamichael continues to rapidly improve in her limited time in the Division 1 side. “They were dominant in the first half, but we chipped away and maintained composure in the second half ... and fitness played a key - we’ve got a really good fitness base,” Smith said. “Against Seaford and Geelong, we’ve shown in the last quarters we can go the four quarter effort and these matches mirrored each other - up against the wall three quarter time- and steam-
rolled them by the end.” The Eagles - VWFL Division 1’s minor premiers - face Seaford in a qualifying final on Saturday from 3pm at Shepley Oval. Even with its impressive 16-1-1 record and the way his side has stormed into the finals knocking off Seaford and North Geelong in a three-week window - Smith isn’t pretending that his side is unbeatable. “There is no favourite in this league,” Smith said. “Anyone of those three sides can win it - no underdogs and no favourites - all sides are capable of going the distance. “I’ve seen our girls and the other two up close
over the last three weeks and they’re all fantastic, so we’ll be up against it again this week, Seaford is a quality team and at full strength.” Also importantly - showing the mindset of the Eagles heading into their maiden Division 1 finals campaign - the minor premiership is just that ... minor. “It’s nice to tick off, but in reality you don’t get anything for it,” Smith said. “There’s no cup, no medal, just a nice little tag - the ultimate glory is what we’re after. “We’ve made the finals and put ourselves in the best position possible - but getting to the grand final, that’s what the next two weeks are about.”

Finals berth with a sting at tail end By JARROD POTTER VFL - ROUND 19 REVIEW A HELLACIOUS run-home has not halted Casey’s march into finals after clawing its way back in front of Coburg - both in a 17-point win and on the VFL ladder. Needing one win from its final six weeks to qualify, Casey had failed to strike and sustained four losses in a row, leaving its chances in the balance. Saturday’s salvo between eighth-placed Casey (on 32 points) versus 10th ranked Coburg (28) became a must-win for either side to keep it alive in the premiership race. But even when pushed to the limit against the Lions on Saturday - when the side trailed 39 to 60 by the end of the second quarter - the Scorpions found avenues to rally a comeback. With a mix of youth and experience the Scorpions thrust past Coburg to not only take the 17.9 (111) to 14.10 (94) triumph, but also book its place in the finals. They were jumped early by an up-tempo Lions outfit - looking to give a perfect send-off to departing VFL champion Nick Carnell. Flourishing in red-time during the third term, Casey booted its way ahead via Jake Spencer, Dean Terlich and up-and-coming forward Matt Rennie. IT’S official. Australian, Allcomers, Under-20, Under-18 and Under-16 record holder has a nice ring to it - with Dayna Crees now officially holding these exceptional achievements in long jump, discus and shot put. Crees, 13, from Berwick, set the records in the F-35 athletes-with-disability (AWD) classification at the schools national championships in 2014 and earlier this year at the Athletics Australia junior championships, but it took a while for her certification to go through. Despite the long wait, Crees was thrilled to finally gain recognition as one of Australia’s finest. “They finally have (certified her),” Crees said. “It’s pretty good and quite exciting.” Her current shot put record is with the 2kg shot put, but should have been 3kg, but Crees isn’t too fussed about it as she’ll move up weights this year anyway and will push
to add the 3kg record to her ever-increasing collection as well as aiming for the running records next. “I want to try and get close to the records in the 100 and 200 - as I haven’t broken any records in them,” Crees said. The athletic all-rounder - who seamlessly switches from 100/200m sprinter to long jump, discus and shot put field star - is already targeting a few more awards to add to her wall. Her 2.70m jump this year is an unofficial world record in the long jump too, but Crees can’t claim the record yet as she’s not classified internationally ... yet. That could change very quickly as she is setting her sights this year on the biggest prize of them all - representing Australia at the 2016 Rio Paralympics. “Aiming for the Rio Olympics and there’s a competition in Switzerland - the World Youth Champs - and we’re also aiming for that as well,” Crees said.
“For the Olympics with the 100m, the B qualifier is 18 seconds and my time is 18.21, so if I get below that I’ll get a B qualifier. “Hopefully I can get that by the end of this season maybe - we don’t know when they’re going to start picking people, but we want to get it done earlier in the season. “I've got the Victorian All Schools in November and that will be one of the ones I’ll aim for to get a good result.” The St Francis Xavier Year 8 student is working hard away from the track and field ahead of her biggest athletic year so far and in the meantime she’s also developed a taste for high-calibre swimming as she’s joined the Casey TigerSharks and has participated in a number of meets. She wanted to thank her coaches Gordon Talbot and Eric Fuimuina and her parents for their support of her everrising athletics ambitions.

PROVING he is one of the alltime greats in jumps racing, Berwick jockey Steven Pateman showed his elite pedigree to win jumps racing’s most prestigious individual honour once again. Pateman, 32, was awarded his eighth Tommy Corrigan Medal in nine years at an awards ceremony this week. Even without riding in one of the biggest jumps races on the Australian calendar, the Grand National Steeplechase, after an unsuccessful appeal against a careless riding suspension, Pateman still ended up a clear winner on 25 votes, to beat Martin Kelly (12 votes) and equal-third place finishers John Allen and Patrick Flood (11 votes). Eagles simply too good in the end By DAVID NAGEL CRANBOURNE will begin its chase for its fifthconsecutive grand final berth from top-spot on the South East Football Netball League ladder after a destructive 92-point thrashing of Doveton at Casey Fields on Saturday. The Eagles will be hoping for a change of luck if they do make their way to the big dance, having lost their last three after a drought-breaking premiership win in 2011. The Eagles, who now get a week off before their second semi-final engagement against either Berwick or Narre Warren, had the game against the Doves in the bag at half time, 58 points up, before cruising home to victory. Ryan Jones and Michael Theodoridis slotted four each for the Eagles while Glenn Osborne, Mat Fletcher and Max Gearon were superimpressive for four quarters. Shannon Henwood kicked two and was typically resilient for the Doves who will need to lift significantly for this week’s elimination final against Beaconsfield. Narre Warren has timed its run to perfection, leapfrogging Beaconsfield into third position with a 39-point victory over the Eagles at Kalora Park. This was a very even contest for three quarters, but a late third-quarter goal to Kerem Baskaya stretched the margin out to three goals and seemed to break the Eagles spirit.
From there the Magpies went on the tear, kicking three goals in the opening seven minutes of the final term to effectively end the contest. Baskaya kicked six second-half goals, and finished the day with seven, while rover Dylan Quirk was brilliant through the midfield. Jake Rose kicked four and Ryan Olsson was good for the Eagles. Pakenham will head into the off-season with a spring in its step after a hard-fought 10-point victory over ROC. The Lions were an early season contender before injury and illness to key players cruelled their season. Jake Smith kicked three for the winners while Dean Blake and Anthony Young were terrific around the ground. The Kangaroos lost their last 10 games of the season but Sean Roach and Matt Clarke, who finished with four goals, can hold their heads high. Hampton Park sent coach Matt O’Neil off in style, winning its second game of the season with a 29-victory over Tooradin at Westernport Oval. After two years at the helm the iconic Gembrook figure will now head back to his former club as an assistant-coach. Luke O’Brien kicked four goals and Nathan Carver three for the Redbacks who won two of their last four games. Julian Suarez, Michael Wallace and Nick Schumann finished 2015 off with fine games for the Seagulls.

Teams set to toe the line By DAVID NAGEL THIS is it! After months of gruelling training and pounding the pavement in search of victory - it comes down to six games of netball to decide the first ever champions of the South East Football Netball League. The first whistle will blow and see Hampton Park and Pakenham collide in Saturday’s qualifying final at Edwin Flack Reserve. The Redbacks defeated the Lions by 18 goals back in round one, but coach Kylie Kibble and her girls were forced into a 3434 draw in round 13. Does she now fear the Lions? “Not at all, I think if we play our best netball we can beat them all over the court,” was Kibble’s blunt and honest assessment of this week’s clash. “Emma (Goal-Shooter Emma Ryde) didn’t play the last time we met, that’ll make a huge difference, and the girls are playing really good netball at the moment.”
Both teams have some serious talent -and height- in attack, with Ryde the key for the Redbacks while Rachel Priestly has starred for the Lions at this time of the year before. “It’s going to be tough, but our girls have all played at an elite level at some stage of their career so we won’t be intimidated,” Lions’ coach Kerry Twyford said. But it’s the Redbacks by an even 10. Sunday’s elimination final, between Beaconsfield and Doveton at ROC, is a bit of a weird one, with the fifthplaced Doves dominating their encounters against the fourthplaced Eagles this year. The Eagles have Georgie Benbow, Kylie Baker and Kaela Hughes all capable of feeding Bianca Sanzaro and Andi Dickson, while Dani Cameron, Kaitlyn Paligorov and Gabi Stinear are all miserly defenders indeed. But can they stop Rahni Samason? The Doves’ dynamo has been terrific this year, laser-like
with her accuracy, and receiving great support from Rita Kaye-White, while defenders Cara Humbert and Aggie Seeto are two of the most athletic players in the league. This one will be tight ... but it’s the Doves to prevail by three. In round 18 action, Narre Warren bookends Elly Stewart (GS) and Tracey Dell (GK) were superb in the Magpies 5128 victory over Beaconsfield. Samason was on fire early for Doveton, slotting 14 first-quarter goals, while the two Kate’s, Murphy and Sidebottom dominated through the midcourt in the Doves 64-38 win over Cranbourne, while Pakenham made it five wins on end with an 18goal win, 54-36, at ROC. Rachel Priestly (GS) and Toni Dart (GA) combined well for the Lions while Michelle Briggs (GK) and Olivia Hunt (GD) were frugal at the opposite end of the court. Hampton Park warmed up for this week’s clash with the Lions with a 54-33 victory over Tooradin.

Sweet victory for X Men By RUSSELL BENNETT “WE were lucky to have a club at all after what we’d been through.” Those aren’t empty words from St Francis Xavier Old Collegians Football Club president Chris Seuren - they’re reality - and that’s precisely what makes Sunday’s premiership triumph so special. The X Men claimed the VAFA Club XVIII (2) title with a big win over the Melbourne High School Old Boys, 15.10 (100) to 4.5 (29). “I was just so massively proud of all the boys,” he said on Monday, still celebrating the group’s achievement from the day before. “We were lucky to have a club at all after what we’d been through, but we had 25 to 26 very committed blokes who refused to let the club die.” Seuren reserved special praise for player-coach Trent Pearson, who the Gazette understands wasn’t paid a cent in the 2015 season. “He’s just been fantastic for us,” Seuren said. “It was a huge commitment from him - he did a super, super job.” Seuren said everything fell into place for his side, with strong numbers on the training track after the

first month or so of the season. “We played Albert Park three times and when we played them the second time we won by 10 goals at their ground and that was a huge result for us,” Seuren said, indicating that was one of the side’s key moments of the season. “I guess we were just fitter than other sides - we were able to over-
run them at the end of games. “They came out hard against us on the weekend - they kicked the first two goals of the second quarter, but then we were five goals up at half-time.” Seuren praised the likes of Sam Burns, captain Sean Dullard, and Chris Hughes - who are all in their prime footy years.

“From where we were at, now as a group we’ve just come such a long way,” he said. Seuren said the X Men still had some “massive” improvements to make off-field when it came to the likes of junior club affiliation, and said there were ongoing discussions about which competition they’d be in next year. “I guess it’s been a matter of surviving year to year up until now,” he said. “Now we’re talking about five to 10-year strategic plans. “We’ve got to run the club like a business.” Sunday’s result marked a seismic shift from where the club had been earlier this year. Seuren told the Gazette back in April, for example, that he took the presidency on once again because he “just couldn’t let the club die”. A lack of numbers has forced them out of the VAFA’s Division 3 competition and back down to Club XVIII - right where they started in 2007. But now, thanks to Seuren, Pearson, the club’s playing group and its diehard members and committee, it’s living strong.

Eagles go down memory lane PREMIERSHIP reunions are going to come thick and fast for the Cranbourne Football Club over the next few years with its dominance of the 1980’s set to be celebrated in style. Under coach Darryl Nisbet the Eagles won three premierships on the trot. The first of those, in 1985, was remembered by a large gathering of past players and officials at Casey Fields on Saturday. Nisbet spoke about the characters at the club during his time, while current-day coach Simon Goosey spoke in glowing terms of a dominant era at the club. High-flying forward Craig Burton and captain John Fox flew down from Queensland for the occasion.

Sonata has changed for the better By PETER ANDERSON IT'S okay, it’s okay, hush now - things have changed. Hyundai has dusted off the nameplate it put out to pasture after adorning a series of fairly unspectacular midsized sedans, whipping off the covers of a much more attractive and capable car to take on a segment dominated by Toyota’s recently perked-up Camry, with Mazda’s 6 some way behind. The Sonata joins the i40 (which, oddly, is known as Sonata in the US) in the local range, offering two very different-looking cars in roughly the same segment. Confused? Don’t be. They’re quite different. The new Sonata range is spearheaded by the entry-level Active at $29,990 and topped by the $41,990 Premium. Sandwiched between the two at $36,990 is the Elite that will grace our driveway for the next few months. Your money buys you a six-speaker stereo with DVD player, Bluetooth and USB, dual-zone climate control, 17-inch alloys, cruise control, sat-nav, electric driver’s seat adjustment, automatic headlights and wipers, keyless entry and start, entirely convincing fake leather seats, front and rear parking sensors with rear view camera, full-size spare. Hyundai has resurrected the Sonata nameplate. fluence, which makes sense given the head of design is Peter Schreyer. Finish, particularly the paint, is up there with the Genesis too. The sharp creases cut through flatter, less curvy sheetmetal than the rest of its stablemates and the gentle arc of the roofline has a lot of Audi A5 in it, ending in a short deck. The boot itself is gigantic and as you work your way forward, space is a recurring theme. The rear seat has limo-like space if not a particularly luxurious bench seat, but three adults will fit side by side, with plenty of leg-room but not a lot of personal hip space. The distinctive headlights and
daytime running lights give Hyundai Sonata a strong new face, along with the corporate Hyundai grille. It’s an assured design and is as subtly detailed as any Hyundai. We’ve gotten used to the Korean company’s offerings looking good, now we’re starting to see a real maturity with this new direction. Inside isn’t quite as assured as the exterior. The dash structure is a bit of a cliff and again draws on the interior design of the Genesis. It doesn’t hang together as well as the exterior, but the materials are good with mostly good fit. As the youngest member of the family continues to test the upper lim-
its of every rear seat that arrives on the driveway, it’s nice to get in and not hear complaints from the rear seat about leg-room. The Sonata lands with six airbags, ABS, brake assist, traction and stability controls and scored five ANCAP stars. Hyundai’s software boffins have been a bit hit and miss over the years. The better examples tend to be found in the lower, Active models where there’s less ambition. It all works, but sometimes it doesn’t activate after having to agree not to crash while using it. It sometimes forgets to find your phone and, embarrassingly, there’s a few typos. The Sonata is powered by the company’s own Theta II four-cylinder turbo. It’s a strong unit with 180 Kw
(!) of power and 350 Nm of torque. It’s mated to the Korean company’s own six-speed automatic. Sadly, it’s missing stop-start which is starting to look more unfortunate as more and more companies use this emission reducing system. The claimed fuel consumption on the combined cycle is 9.2 litres per 100km and as we’re still running it in, we’re seeing 10.9 L/100km, which isn’t bad considering the outputs. It’s slowly sinking, but without that stop-start, it’s unlikely to get too much lower. We’ll see. We’ve been most impressed with the Sonata straight off the bat. The first impression is one of impressive refinement. Some of Hyundai’s petrol engines have a habit of sounding a little coarse under load but this one barely makes a peep, even when revving. The transmission has always been a good one, and handles the duties of moving the 1645 kg Sonata about. There’s also been a huge improvement in the driving dynamics. A rigorous program by the Australian suspension team has seen the Sonata’s road manners elevated above the usual tunes we used to have to put up with. While this isn’t a hard-riding sportster, an excellent balance has been struck between comfort, grip and control. It probably rolls a little more than the keen driver would like but it’s an immensely comfortable and quiet car to tackle the morning commute.
