She added that Cardinia Shire had not adequately communicated changes to residents. “People are a bit confused as to what’s expected and what’s going on.” Cardinia Shire Council manager of Rates and Valuations Russell Hodges said the changes had been made in response to community feedback, but did not explain why the pay-in-full date had been brought forward. “The primary payment option has changed from one lump sum payment in February to four instalments in September, November, February and May,” he said. “The decision was made in response to feedback from residents that it was more convenient to pay instalments rather than one lump sum payment. “This change also brings Cardinia Shire Council in line with most other councils in Victoria.” He said that council had publicised the changes through various outlets. “These changes have been communicated to residents via Connect magazine which is delivered to all households, a media release distributed via a number of channels, council’s website and the rates brochure sent to all ratepayers along with the rate notice.” The due date for residents who wish to pay in full is now 30 September.

CARDINIA Shire ratepayers opting to pay their annual rates upfront will be stung with two sets in eight months due to a recent restructure. As of the 2015-'16 financial year, the primary rate payment option has changed from one lump sum due in February to four instalments to be paid in September, November, February and May. Ratepayers still wishing to pay the entire amount upfront will have to pay by the first instalment due date, more than four months earlier than the previous pay-in-full date of 15 February. Residents have hit out at the changes, labelling council’s expectation that residents pay two lots of annual rates within eight months as “unreasonable.” Lisa Rowe lives in Heritage Springs with her husband and two children, and says the family prefer to pay their rates upfront to alleviate the burden for the rest of the year. “Throughout the year, a lot of other bills are coming in, it’s easy to lose track,” she said. “It definitely puts us under a bit of pressure, particularly because I’m on maternity leave at the moment. “The February due date gives people plenty of notice and a bit of time to save. It’s a huge expense.” Despite registering a change of address with the council, their rate notice was sent to a previous rental property.

After a season in which they played no home games; in which they didn’t even have a home base; and in which many outside the club dismissed their chances of achieving anything - the Pakenham Silverbacks are Gridiron Victoria Division 2 champions in just their second season of existence.

Ponies’ diet drama By DANI ROTHWELL MUFFIE Minipony and her mates Lucky and Hope are three ponies that bring joy to everyone they meet. Muffie, the local celebrity, decided to engage Lucky in an eating competition of heavy bedding straw on Monday 10 August. Dean Cowan, of Pakenham, their carer and self-proclaimed human servant, said it was typical of their breed. “They’re very gluttonous by nature - even if they’re full, they eat!” he said. But the issue is what they ate - the heaviness and coarseness caused major stomach issues for the pair. Since Monday, they had a stomach ache, which became colic, and then became compaction. Ultimately, they’ve been battling to keep their stomachs moving. The care they’ve received is quite expensive and Dean is asking for the community who loves them to help them out. “We’ve spent $2,500 on them this time,” he said. “I know the community loves Muffie - I’m

asked in the street how she’s going. “Even the local bikie gang stopped by and checked up on her.” As of Friday morning, their stomachs had begun moving again, but there’s still a while to go. Lucky was particularly bad at one point, with euthanasia being put forward as an option. “He was really bad, with no oxidised blood getting to his bowels,” Dean said. “The options were $12,000 for surgery, euthanasia, or wait it out with pain relief and sedation. “We’ve waited it out and he’s on his way back.” Dean has plans on setting up the rescue business to be registered with the ATO, but until that’s done the way of helping out with their medical expenses is directly through South Eastern Equine Hospital. Any financial help from the community is appreciated. “Just want to say thank you for the unconditional support and kind words of our well-loved friend,” Dean said. “Even the nurses know Muffie. “She’s my little mate.” To support Dean and the Pakenham ponies, the client number is: 66147, account name South

COMMUTERS from Pakenham and surrounds should feel some respite on the Monash Freeway. The section between the Glen Iris High Street exit and Chadstone’s Warrigal Road exit has been fitted out with a $19.7 million upgrade to introduce the ‘Intelligent Transport System’. Over the past few months, the works have introduced closed circuit television cameras (CCTV) and overhead electronic signs. The CCTV will allow VicRoads to better manage traffic during incidents and road works, with the overhead signs getting updates to enable lane closures or change speed limits for the changed traffic conditions. Narre Warren North MP and Minister for Roads and Road Safety Luke Donnellan said the upgrades "will improve traffic flow for the more than 176,000 motorists on the Monash". “The lane use management system means we can better manage the freeway network, meaning drivers spend less time in their cars and more time at home with their families,” Mr Donnellan said. Federal Minister for Infrastructure Warren Truss said this section of the freeway in particular left motorists frustrated with the congestion. “As part of the managed motorway, drivers must obey and observe these overhead electronic signs for speed limits, incident information and lane availability,” Mr Truss said. The speed limit on this section of the Monash Freeway from High Street to Warrigal Road will remain at 100km/h.

CASEY Mayor Mick Morland has thrown his support behind the State Coroner’s findings into the “cluster” of youth suicides in Casey and Cardinia in 2011 and 2012. Coroner Audrey Jamieson’s findings into the spate of youth suicides in Melbourne’s south-east were formally released last month at an official Department of Human Services briefing. The findings come after the Coroners Prevention Unit (CPU) completed a retrospective case series examination of suspected suicides and hospitalisation for self-harm among residents of the City of Casey and Cardinia Shire, aged 24 and under, for the period 2007 to 2013. For suspected suicide, the CPU found that compared to previous years the frequency and rate per

100,000 population was elevated in 2011, meeting the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention’s definition of a “suicide cluster”. Cr Morland said he and council supported Coroner Jamieson’s recommendations, which centred on developing a suicide prevention and post-vention response framework, which “has the ability to take into account various socio-demographic and geographic profiles of individual local government areas”. “Council will continue to work collaboratively with our community, state and federal agencies as well as health providers in providing a range of support services,” Cr Morland said. “Through these and other initiatives, the City of Casey has demonstrated a commitment to leading the community discussion on youth mental health.

“The City of Casey acknowledges the collaboration with the partners and thanks them for their leadership and commitment to the young people and the broader community.” Specifically in the findings, six suspected suicides were identified among “usual residents” of the City of Casey in 2011, compared to one in 2010 and three in 2009. Similarly four suspected suicides were identified among usual residents of Cardinia Shire in 2011 compared to one in 2010, two in 2009, and zero in both 2008 and 2007. And in the two years after 2011, while the frequency of suspected suicides was found to have reduced slightly, it remained higher than 2009 and 2010 in both the City of Casey and the Cardinia Shire - with four suspected suicides in 2012 and

2013 for Casey, and three in both 2012 and 2013 for Cardinia. The Casey and Cardinia findings were the culmination of years of research, in many ways instigated on 23 November, 2011, when a member of the public contacted the CPU to express concern over the perceived increase of youth suicides in Casey and Cardinia Shire; followed in January 2012 by the formation of the Casey Youth Suicide Steering Committee (YSSC). The YSSC has developed an online resource kit that can be found at www.sayft.net. The increase of youth suicides in Casey and Cardinia saw a community summit held in 2012 at the City of Casey chambers, and covered by the ABC’s Four Corners. Steph drops in on youth By LACHLAN MOORHEAD STATE Shadow Minister for Youth Steph Ryan was a welcome guest in Narre Warren on Thursday when she visited the Casey Youth Hub. Ms Ryan, Deputy Leader of The Nationals, was shown the hub and the Narre Warren Youth Information Centre by City of Casey Manager Youth and Family Collette McMahon, Director Community Services Greg Wood and Acting Co-ordinator for Youth Services Dani West. The centre was opened roughly a year ago and is available for all youths, five days a week, offering a range of programs and activities including youth counselling, youth programs, holiday programs and provides a place for young people to drop in and seek out information and advice. Ms Ryan also visited Youth Works

in Narre Warren, where she was told of complications with Pacific Islander youths often not being eligible for Australian counselling services. “I’m working my way around the state and trying to get a better sense of the issues facing young people,” she said. Ms Ryan said one of the key reasons for her Narre Warren visit was to look at ways to curb Casey’s youth unemployment. “You’ve got transport problems, there’s the fact there isn’t a whole lot of industry here and so young people have to travel to find jobs,” she said. “Access to education, all of those things contribute to a bigger problem which is more complex to address.” The Casey Youth Hub helps provide access to trains, buses and Fountain Gate Shopping Centre.

I AM writing to refute Mr Glazebrook’s baseless claims in his letter ‘City in a spin’ (Berwick News, 13 August), which makes subjective comments about ratepayers’ money being used to promote political parties or ideologies. As the writer is well aware, the City of Casey is not politically aligned. The council prepares its annual, independent budget, based on the specific needs of Casey’s growing, diverse community and is committed to providing infrastructure and services in the community’s best interest. As council has previously proven, this city and its surrounds severely lack access to arts and cultural facilities and Bunjil Place will meet this critical need. To achieve the best result for the community, council has advocated to all levels of government for financial support towards the project. It is clear that Mr Glazebrook has missed the point of the funding. The Federal Government’s contribution of $10m will reduce the cost of the project to council, support more than 1200 jobs for locals during construction and 53 post opening, and deliver a range of economic benefits. It is important that Mr Glazebrook’s public claims about council and Bunjil Place be informed by the facts, rather than his own political alignments or personal ideologies. I WOULD like to set the record straight, regarding Mr Girton and Mr Kotsiras's letter ‘Ratepayers Count’ (Berwick News, 13 August). The City of Casey’s ability to fund Bunjil Place has always been secure. The $25.5M allocated in this years’ budget is part of the $125M budget for the project and is fully funded in Council’s Budget and Strategic Resource Plan without having to increase rates to do so. The $10M from the Federal Government reinforces council’s ability to deliver this much-needed community facility. Council continues to advocate to the State Government for funding, to further reduce the cost of the project to council. It appears the writers are out of touch with the local community if they are unable to recognise this significant gap in local arts and cultural infrastructure and service provision. Almost 50 per cent of Casey’s population is made up of students aged under 18 and their families, who are crying out for quality arts and performing venues close to home

These feet can’t be beat BEACONHILLS Berwick students are born performers. Twenty-five dance and glee students travelled to the Gold Coast on Thursday 13 August to compete at the TFT Sports and Event Management Dance Star and Glee National Championship. Over three days, the students competed with nine dance entries and three glee entries at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre. The students have been training since February at morning, lunch and after school, with their efforts being rewarded through placing in the top three in 10 of their entries.

Dance teacher and co-ordinator Stephanie Borrie is proud of their efforts. “They are all hard-working and dedicated students with a huge amount of talent,” she said. “All of the students were amazing on and off stage, demonstrating fantastic sportsmanship and support for one another.” Performing arts scholar Darion Gandhi said winning the national championships the first time with Beaconhills was a great achievement. “Being my first years as a dance scholar with BHC and giving my best at the Nationals has given me so much confidence that yes, I can achieve more,” he said. “This is just the beginning.”

Cafe home to chat MEMBERS of the Hampton Park Women’s Friendship Cafe met with Multicultural Affairs Minister Robin Scott this week to look into ways they could be given a permanent home. Mr Scott, and Narre Warren South MP Judith Graley, met with members of the group on Wednesday at their portable facility at River Gum Primary. The school and the friendship cafe, which caters for women who are new to Australia and who speak little or no English, are currently investigating the possibility of converting an disused indoor

swimming pool on the school grounds into a playgroup and preschool facility. It’s understood River Gum Primary is planning to put in an application to build the estimated $600,000 pre-school facility where the old swimming pool used to be. In June, Ms Graley urged Mr Scott in Parliament to come and meet the members of the friendship cafe to discuss the potential of a permanent home. Through the friendship cafe the women take English lessons, learn to drive, access counselling, and attend information sessions on their legal rights.

AN ICE addict dragged along a police officer for several metres as he drove off from a police intercept in Beaconsfield. On Monday, Michael James Nagy, of Langwarrin, pleaded guilty to reckless conduct, failing to comply with a police officer’s lawful directions and possession of ice over the incident in front of Haileybury College late on 16 January. After being pulled over, police observed a plastic bag of ice on the centre console, police prosecutor Senior Constable Fiona Davis told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court. She said Nagy allegedly wound down his window and blankly stared ahead as he was

spoken to by a police officer. Suddenly the accused drove off, over a nature strip and several plastic roadside palings. In the action, the officer’s shoulder was struck by the car’s driver-side pillar; his hand caught up inside the car as he was dragged along. The officer was later treated for shoulder, wrist and finger injuries at Casey Hospital, the court was told. The vehicle was found by police the next day in a fastfood outlet car park. Inside the car were two plastic bags of ice and two shotgun cartridges. Nagy also pleaded guilty to drug-driving while ice was in his system in Hallam in December, and for possessing a machete in his car in Narre Warren

in April. Nagy told the court he stopped drinking and started an ice habit after his divorce three years ago. He had since gone “cold turkey” from drugs. “This is one of the biggest down-points of my life. That (drive-off) incident woke me up to an extent. I realised I’ve done stupid things. My life has turned 180 degrees around.” Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said Nagy was “very lucky” he had not killed the police officer. He sentenced Nagy to a 12-month community corrections order, including supervision, drug testing, mental health treatment and 150 hours of unpaid work. Nagy was disqualified from driving for six months.

Please don’t deport our Raj By LACHLAN MOORHEAD THE Cranbourne Cricket Club is appealing to Immigration Minister Peter Dutton for help in a last-ditch effort to save one of their Sri Lankan-born players from being deported. Poharjan Rajenthiran, 18, known as Raj, has been moved to Darwin where he awaits deportation after living in Cranbourne for the last two years. Raj was one of five Sri Lankan Tamil boys the Cranbourne Cricket Club took under its wing with the help of the Life without Borders program, which set up accommodation in Casey for the teenager after his parents sent him to Australia to avoid persecution. Having now turned 18, Raj’s last chance to stay in Australia is an appeal to the Federal Immigration Minister. Cranbourne Cricket Club committee member Shaun Petrie said he and others were concerned for Raj’s safety if

he were to be taken back to Sri Lanka. “Having visited Sri Lanka personally and knowing the ill feelings that many Sri Lankan groups still have toward the already decimated Tamil community, I genuinely fear for Poharjan’s safety if he is indeed returned,” Mr Petrie wrote in an open letter to Mr Dutton. Last Friday Mr Petrie met with an advisor for Holt MP Anthony Byrne who said Mr Byrne intended to raise the issue with the Immigration Minister in Canberra this week. In the meantime the Cranbourne Cricket Club has urged people to write letters of recommendation for Raj to help support their bid to Mr Dutton, while a change.org petition has also been set up. “All avenues of appeal been exhausted, his government appointed lawyer has obviously taken him through the whole process ... he’s been denied a visa to stay,” Mr Petrie said.

“His only hope is for the Minister for Immigration to intervene. It’s a last-ditch chance, and it’s probably a 100 to one shot.” Mr Petrie said as well as being a very good cricketer Raj was “a respectful, polite, very honest, hard-working person” and much-loved member of the team after having joined two seasons ago. “The club was asked if we’d be interested in taking on the four or five Tamil boys because the only connection they had with this country was through cricket,” Mr Petrie said. Autobarn is coming back By LACHLAN MOORHEAD AFTER being forced to close for almost three months, and enduring a combined loss of more than $1.5 million, Cranbourne Autobarn is finally re-opening its doors for the first time since the store was ram-raided and ransacked by thieves in June. While not formally re-opening the family business until next month, store owner John Feehan and staff are planning to hold an unofficial re-opening on Thursday after what has been a harrowing 10-week journey to completely rebuild the Autobahn, located in the Cranbourne Homemaker Centre. Thieves completely trashed the facility and stole roughly $10,000 worth of products. About 4am on 3 June the offenders ploughed an allegedly stolen Holden Statesman through the rear roller door of the South Gippsland Highway shop, which is insured, and slammed into bollards inside the building. They stole a range of items before setting the car on fire and fleeing the scene. In addition to the stolen merchandise, Mr Feehan said he was forced to write-off about 90 per cent of his stock due to smoke and fire damage, leading to a loss expected to be in excess of $1.5 million. The kids with 100 reasons to celebrate ON MONDAY, 3 August, Lakeside College Prep students were very excited to celebrate 100 days of school. The Preps had been marking off the days on their special calendar all year and finally the 100th day arrived! The students celebrated the

day by making and decorating special ‘I am 100 Days Smarter!’ hats and watching Emily’s 100 Days of School. They also drew a picture of what they thought they would look like when they are 100 years of age and made 100 days of school glasses.

Their Officer business L8 Studio won the Shark Tank contest at the Tech-Innovation and Entrepreneurship Expo at the Chisholm Institute Berwick Campus on Saturday 15 August. Ms Ah-Yu and Mr Cerdor started the home-based business about two years ago. â€œWe saw this as a good opportunity to get some brand awareness,â€? Ms AhYu said. â€œWe want to start to showcase what we can do and what we can bring to the region. â€œBasically, we produce 3D architectural images of off-the-plan projects.â€? She said the images were not only marketing tools but helped town planners and councils to visualise projects. She said other companies producing similar images were graphic designers. â€œThey donâ€™t have the architectural background we have,â€? she said. â€œWe can pick up mistakes graphic designers wouldnâ€™t be able to because they donâ€™t have that background.â€? L8 Studio took home $300 in cash and $700 worth of marketing and mentoring for its winning pitch. â€œWe did invest some time in producing our pitch and our material,â€? Ms AhYu said. â€œItâ€™s a great opportunity. â€œThe $300 will go back into the business. â€œOur plan is to keep growing and se-

It’s all go at Toomah CARDINIA Shire’s newest community centre is throwing open its doors. Toomah Community Centre is holding an open day from 10am-1pm on Saturday, 29 August. Residents can see the new skills and well-being community centre, have a look at the community space available for hire and learn about the services and activities on offer. There will also be a free sausage sizzle and kids' activities. The state-of-the-art centre opened in April this year and has been providing the community with services, training facilities and meeting spaces. The centre features five consulting suites, five meeting and activity spaces for community use and hire, a community kitchen, a train-

ing room with IT equipment, a commercial training kitchen and a social enterprise cafe. Windermere Child and Family Services delivers support services and programs to disadvantaged and vulnerable members of our community from the centre. Living and Learning Inc. Pakenham manages the dayto-day operations and delivers training. Mayor Cr Leticia Wilmot encouraged residents to take the opportunity to see what the centre could do. “This centre will help people connect with one another, and will improve the skills, health and well-being of many of our residents. Council is enormously proud of Toomah Community Centre and we know it will benefit many people,” Cr Wilmot

said. The centre’s social enterprise cafe, On Track, will also be open on the day. The cafe gives staff hands-on experience and training in the food and hospitality industries and provides nationally accredited training in hospitality-related certificates for early school leavers, parents returning to work, those who have been unemployed for some time and the culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) community. The $6.8 million facility was jointly funded by Council ($3.3 million), Windermere Child and Family Services ($2 million) and the Victorian Government ($1.5 million). Toomah Community Centre is located at 18 Golden Green Street, Pakenham.

Cheeky monkeys “IF YOU build it, he will come.” To borrow a line from Field of Dreams - one of the most famous sporting movies of all time - the Pakenham Silverbacks have built something truly special in just their first two seasons of Gridiron Victoria competition. Despite yet having bricks, mortar or even a home field to call their own, the Silverbacks have already achieved in year two what many thought was impossible. They’ve built a brotherhood and a foundation of mateship so strong, that it has taken them from literally nothing to the Division 2 crown. On Saturday afternoon at the Latrobe City Sports and Entertainment Stadium in Morwell, their 2015 fairy-tale was completed. After a season in which they played no home games; in which they didn’t even have a home base; and in which many outside the club dismissed their chances of achieving anything - the Silverbacks hung on for dear life to claim the Division 2 title 9-6 over the Monash Barbarians. Pakenham had already defeated the division’s red-hot favourites, the Bendigo Dragons, to reach the decider - where they faced a Monash outfit with a bonafide championship pedigree. And it seemed for much of the early going on Saturday that the Silverbacks had already played their final in just making it to the championship game. After coming out of the half-time 0-0 deadlock, Pakenham took its opportunities on both ends. Paul Tindall’s side led 6-0 heading into the final quarter and with one hand already on the championship trophy, held on for dear life to seal a famous win. For Tindall, Saturday marked his second successive Division 2 title - having guided the Gippsland Gladiators to glory last year. As he held the trophy aloft on the middle of the field on Saturday, he thanked the Silverbacks and their committee for the opportunity to be involved in “a true club”. Vice-president and assistant coach Damien Belsham said all the adversity the Silverbacks had gone through to this stage simply served to build character. “The closeness that we have as a team is incredible,” he said. “This is a family, and all that adversity brings us closer as a group.” Tight end Kane Latham has a unique perspective on the Silverbacks’ success. The current president of the Tooradin Cricket Club has experienced plenty of it with the Seagulls - having won four flags in six years. But rather than being part a powerhouse (as he is with Tooradin), at the Silverbacks he’s entrenched in a club that’s come from nowhere to claim it all. “I joined this team one or two games into last year,” he said, still in disbelief as he walked off the ground after Saturday’s win. “I saw all the work that was being put in and everything that was being done. “To see something come up after being written off by everybody; being called the party boys of the league and accused of not caring about our football; it’s unbelievable.” Quarterback Steve Mclean was bedridden in the lead-up to Saturday. He, along with other key players such as Tommy Trimble, got the flu at the worst possible time. But Mclean, right when it mattered most - in Saturday’s second half - had ice running through his veins.

“We had a big win last week, and I was worried we’d come into this game thinking we’d won it already, but the boys knew they had a job to do and they came out and fought so hard - we matched them for most of the game and were able to get a lucky break here and there,” he said, exhausted and with the colour drained from his face. “This is just huge for our club.” Mclean said the Silverbacks’ offensive line gave him “all the confidence in the world” over the season’s final weeks, adding that: “Once your arm is going well, the o-line is holding them back, and you’ve receivers out there who can catch, your job becomes pretty easy”. Along with Mclean and offensive linemen Grant Allen and Jye Healey, defensive star Tommy Trimble battled through illness on Saturday. He arrived at the Silverbacks this year after stints in Division 1 with Berwick (where he was Rookie of the Year), and the South Eastern Predators (where he made the Victorian side). “This amazing - I was going to continue playing Div 1 this year but Richie asked me to come down and take them through some tackling techniques and straight away I knew they were good blokes so I stuck around, and now I’m part of a fairy-tale,” he said. And then there’s gun running back Adam Kolinski. Born in England, he started playing while he was at university in Bournemouth and fell in love with the game. Having played originally as an outside linebacker and defensive end, when he moved to Australia and discovered the Silverbacks through one of their local barbecues, he switched to inside linebacker. Last season, he was named Division 2’s overall MVP, and defensive MVP. But that’s nothing compared to being able to call himself a champion as part of this year’s side. “We did really well last year but we fell at the last hurdle,” he said. “I think in order to be a champion, you have to know what it’s like to lose. I think this team learnt a lot. Through the struggle, everyone grinding and everyone working hard in the dirt and the mud we did it. We don’t get to play in front of a home crowd, but that brought us closer together and made us want it even more.” These Silverbacks have built it. Now they wait for more to come.

Ryde stars for Redbacks By DAVID NAGEL HAMPTON Park and its gun goalshooter Emma Ryde have thrown down the gauntlet to top-of-the-table Narre Warren after inflicting the Magpies' first loss of the season, a 44-40 victory at Robert Booth Reserve. “She’s a game-changer for us, there’s no doubt about that, but we were really strong all over the court,” Hampton Park coach Kylie Kibble said. “Both sides were strong, the pressure was fantastic, and it was probably the best game I’ve ever coached in. It was a confidence booster for us but we know it’s not going to be easy to beat them again.” Sara Drain was brilliant for the Redbacks, playing centre, leading a midcourt rotation that included Zoe Ryde, Chloe Birch, Maddison Hanlen and Cathy Leeves that more than matched it with the Magpies’ highly-rated middle third. Magpie defenders Tracey Dell and Kara Hargraves now know what to ex-

pect from Emma when the two teams collide again in September. Coach Jade Heinrich can also work closely with Erin Clark and Leigh Taylor to formulate a way of blocking up Drain. Doveton, the sleeping-giant of SEFNL, will play finals this year after a devastating second-half performance led to a 12-goal, 52-40, victory over Berwick at Robinson Reserve. The reigning champs led by just a goal at half-time, but took control of the contest in the third quarter, scoring 13 goals to eight, and then repeated the dose with a 14 goal to eight final term. Rahni Samason and Cara Humbert were once again outstanding bookends for the winners, while Sarah McDermott and Amanda Goodie signed off with great games for the Wickers. Beaconsfield finished with a real spring in its step to down Cranbourne by 12 goals, 48-36, at Holm Park Reserve. The Battle of the Eagles was a tightold affair in the first half, Beacy leading 23-21, before wing attack Georgie Ben-

bow sparked the home side into action after the break. Benbow had a brilliant second half and her synchronicity with Andi Dickson (GA) and Bianca Sanzaro (GS) was sensational to watch at times. She struck like a cobra, looking calm and composed before pulling the trigger and firing in pass after quality pass. Carissa Rakip, Steph Ryan and Jess O’Hanlon, who slipped out of the goalring to play wing attack, were great triers for Cranny. Third-placed Pakenham has stretched its winning streak to four with a comfortable 47-22 victory over Tooradin at Toomuc Reserve. The Lions now have one more game, against ROC, to prepare for a qualifying final against Hampton Park, a team they drew with back in round 13. The two Meaghans, Cook and Winter, were terrific for Kerry Twyford’s side, while Rachel Cole, Dayle Willis and Ebony Dolan were fantastic contributors for the Seagulls. ROC had the bye.

Lions all smiles again By DAVID NAGEL THE contagious smile of Pakenham coach Steve O’Bryan returned on Saturday as the Lions bounced back to the winner’s list with a 63-point victory over Tooradin at Toomuc Reserve. It’s a smile that has largely gone missing since the start of the season when the Lions were at the top of the table after round five and roaring. But two wins from their next 10 games had sort of dulled the enthusiasm somewhat. “I’ll be honest and say it hasn’t been enjoyable at times this year and it’s been tough, probably the toughest year I’ve ever had coaching,” O’Bryan said in his typically honest fashion. The Lions trailed by eight points at half time, but a barnstorming nine-goal third quarter set them on

the path to victory. Playing-coach Steve O’Bryan played a blinder, kicking five, while Daniel Fry’s four goals and great games from Troy Toussaint and Jake Smith were other highlights on the day. Youngsters Nick Schumann and Kris Sabbatucci battled out the four quarters strongly for the Seagulls. Cranbourne will launch its premiership assault from top-spot on the ladder after a brilliantly executed 86-point victory over Beaconsfield at Holm Park Road. Cranbourne will now play Doveton in this week’s final round of the season, and then have a week’s rest, before taking part in the second semi-final on Saturday 5 September. Cranny had to fight hard to break down Beacy but, once it did, it then ran away with one of the more impressive victories of the season. From the 21 minute mark of the

first quarter to the 15 minute mark of the third, Cranbourne kicked 11 of the next 12 goals to open up a 52-point lead. Cranbourne’s front-half was awesome, Michael Theodoridis kicking six, Marc Holt five, while Curtis Barker slipped forward to slot four of his own. Taylor Joyce kicked four and Scott Meyer tried his heart out for Beacy, who now has to defeat Narre Warren this week to retain its top-three position. Narre Warren will head into this week’s huge clash with Beaconsfield on a high after slamming through 10 last-quarter goals against Hampton Park at Robert Booth Reserve. The Magpies didn’t look like 112-point winners at half-time, leading by just 23 points, but released the brakes to record an impressive victory. George Angelopoulos, Kerem Baskaya and Matt Lee kicked three

each for the Magpies and Adam Jamieson slotted two for the Redbacks. Berwick has finished off its home-and-away duties in style, heading into a last-round bye with a 65-point victory over Doveton under its belt. The Wickers were erratic in the second and third terms, kicking 1.7 and then 3.9 for a two-quarter total of 4.16. They finished in style however with an 8.2 to 0.1 final quarter to really put their mark on the contest and put the perfect exclamation mark on a great season. “We really rate Doveton, and they’ve been in good form, so we were really happy with the way we played,” coach Rhys Nisbet said. Ash Smith and Luke Nelson bagged four each for Berwick and Travis Davis kicked three for the Doves.
