A GROUP of frustrated Pakenham commuters have taken matters into their own hands, conducting a survey they hope will attract action from the State Government. In June, Public Transport Victoria (PTV) barred Pakenham commuters from utilising the faster V/Line service to and from Melbourne in a bid to end “inequity” between metro and regional passengers.
The Pakenham V/Line Commuters Group was formed to fight against the timetable changes. Two weeks ago, organisers of the group launched a survey to more accurately measure the impact these changes have had on commuters. Pakenham commuter and group organiser Ben Lewis said he hoped the results of the survey would illustrate the severity of the issue.
“We intend to present the results of the survey to the government, PTV and V/Line to show how this knee-jerk reaction has not only affected people living in Pakenham, but also how it has disadvantaged commuters that come to use the service from surrounding areas such as Kooweerup, Lang Lang, Poowong and Cockatoo,” he said. per cent of those surveyed said they were still using the V/Line service and would continue to do so until the new rules were enforced beginning 1 January next year. The replies also reflected that 25 per cent used the Pakenham V/Line service but lived outside of Pakenham and 85 per cent said that they felt the time taken to travel on the Metro train between Pakenham and the city was too long.

He said the responses had been much more promising
from MPs Brad Battin and David Hodgett, who have both provided advice in fighting for the reversal of the decision. Commuter Dean Sgarbossa said access to the V/Line service had a major impact the lives of Pakenham passengers. “The V/Line service means that Pakenham and surrounding residents save on average 40 minutes of commuting a day, which has economic health and family benefits.”

A PAKENHAM family are appealing to the thief who stole their car over the weekend to return a sentimental baby blanket that was inside. Amber and Daniel Paul awoke on Sunday morning to find that their 2010 Holden Commodore Sportswagon had been stolen from their driveway. Their daughter Charlotte’s pram and carseat were inside the vehicle when it was taken, along with a blanket from her extended stay in hospital. Charlotte was born 11 weeks prematurely on 7 April. She
spent time in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of the Mercy Hospital where she was given the woollen blanket. “It was the first blanket that she was allowed to have,” Amber said. “She had it at the Mercy and then when she was transferred out to Casey and now we use it for her when she’s in the car.” Amber is appealing for the person who has the car to return the blanket. “We just want it back - it’s obviously got a lot of sentimental value. “Even if we can just get our baby’s items dropped off

While the inconvenience of having the car stolen has been frustrating, Amber said the blanket was irreplaceable. “It’s very special to her and to us. I would ask whoever has it to have a heart and give it back.”

When blokes do lunch well A GROUP of almost 400 blokes lined up for a lecture and a laugh at the second annual Casey Cardinia Biggest Ever Blokes Lunch on Friday. The event, run by a community committee put together by Star News Group, aims to raise money and awareness around prostate cancer. The lunch provides an opportunity for men to enjoy a full afternoon of entertainment - provided by comedian Russell Gilbert and football legends David Parkin and Anthony Koutoufides - and also an opportunity to spread a health message among the crowd related to prostate cancer. That message came across loud and clear through John Strachan from the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia, survivor David Parkin and St John of God urologist Scott Donnellan. There was also the fundraising component. Figures are still being tallied, but the amount raised to sink in to prostate cancer research and awareness initiatives is expected to easily eclipse last year’s total of $53,000. WHEREVER Walking Wounded founder Brian Freeman goes in his Great Traverse around three continents, 41 fallen soldiers go with him. He is carrying a Roll of Honour with the names of the 41 Australian casualties in the Afghanistan conflict and on Sunday dropped in to the Pakenham RSL for lunch to share his story. Brian can rattle off their names by heart - and their parents, many of whom have joined him on various legs of the seven month journey from Mount Everest, down the length of Australia and finishing by climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa.
He reckons we should all know their names and hopes one day we will. Brian had hoped to lay 41 poppies in their honour on the top of the world. He and the team began their journey in April and on Anzac Day this year found themselves at Base Camp in Everest the day the earthquake struck, killing 22 on the mountain and 20,000 overall. They were stranded on the mountain and had to jog on the spot to stay alive. He was still determined to make the ascent, but could not. For the first year since the mountain was first conquered, no one made the summit.
The Traverse team was hosted at a fund-raising event in the city on Saturday night by Cranbourne businessmen Silvio Marinelli and Joe Hackett, who joined one of the Kokoda treks, and arrived in Pakenham for lunch, before heading to Kooweerup Secondary College for a breakfast event sponsored by the local Bendigo Community Bank branch on Monday morning. When they get to the southern edge of Tasmania, Brian and the team will lay 41 poppies down, just as they did at Cape York at the start of the Great Traverse. “One day I will lay those poppies on Everest too,” he vowed.

Addiction addition A RENOWNED mental health and addiction service officially opened its doors in Casey last Wednesday. While it’s been operational for roughly six month, EACH Social and Community Health formally opened its new centre in Narre Warren in the same building where Headspace launched just a few weeks ago. EACH’s services will now be extended into south-east Melbourne with Wednesday’s official launch of the new Narre Warren site while connected group Substance Use Recover (SURe) is now also offering its services in Cranbourne. In the next 10 years
the population of Cardinia Shire is projected to grow by 60 per cent while the City of Casey is expected to grow by 26 per cent. Following the Welcome to Country carried out by Aunty Carolyn Briggs, a range of guest speakers shared their stories with the room, including EACH participant Aisha, SURe participant Katharina, and Beyondblue ambassador Tony Wynd. EACH CEO Peter Ruzyla also spoke to guests, noting how the south-east catchment had been identified as a growth corridor with increasing needs for services. “Alcohol and drug use are often co-occurring conditions along with mental health, trauma, gambling, poor physical health, crime and poor
quality of life,” Mr Ruzyla said. “The sites will provide individualised outreach services to consumers, assisting with their recovery journey.” EACH’s programs provide a tailored approach to meet the individual support needs of participants. “People who are coming to seek a service are actually coming as people, rather than a client or a diagnosis or an assessment,” Mr Ruzyla said. “And so it’s really important for us to recognise that our service needs to respond to people, as people.” For more information, visit www.each.com.au.

YOGESWARANS Krinsapillai, charged with making threats to kill and assault, unsuccessfully applied for bail at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Monday. According to a police summary tendered in court, Krinsapillai allegedly woke up his wife in bed and held a knife to her throat about 2am on 23 July. He allegedly said to her that if she didn’t kill herself he was going to kill her. “As the accused was so drunk, he fell asleep and the victim went into the lounge room and cried,” the police summary stated. On 26 July, a drunk Krinsapillai allegedly tried to put a powerboard cable around his wife’s neck as he refused to allow her to go to church. After she pushed him away, he allegedly threatened to kill her as he held a butter knife towards her, hurt her neck by pulling her hair and punched her several times in the arm where she had had an injection. The applicant was found in a “highly intoxicated” state by police with his wife and children at home that morning.
The children were allegedly in the house at the time of both incidents. The wife of 10 years allegedly told police she had been abused on a daily basis and believed the applicant was capable of killing her when he was drunk. She said that he got physically and verbally violent with her whenever he drank, including punching, kicking and trying to strangle her. According to a police summary, Krinsapillai was angry with his wife for speaking to police, believing it to be a family issue. Informant Constable Martin Johnson of Endeavour Hills police said Krinsapillai’s only alternative residence was his brother’s house which was within walking distance of the family home. If his bail application had been successful, Krinsapillai would be taken away to a detention centre and have his visa cancelled by the Department of Immigration and Border Protection, defence lawyer Siva Kandasarmy told the court. “It’s not a situation I’ve
come across before,” Mr Kandasarmy said. “I’m making a bail application but not for (my client) to be released in the community.” Krinsapillai, after consulting with his lawyer, then represented himself with the application with the help of a Tamil interpreter. He denied making threats with a knife and trying to put a cable around his wife’s neck, but admitted hitting her. “I will not commit this offence again. I want to meet with my children.” Magistrate Julie O’Donnell in refusing bail said Krinsapillai, who has no prior convictions, failed to show cause for his release and was an unacceptable risk to his family “The nature of the offending is very serious and there are a number of high-risk factors in relation to family violence,” she said. Under an intervention order, Krinsapillai is banned from all contact with his family. Krinsapillai was remanded in custody to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 19 August. 1187118-KC24-15

Cop’s wisdom for parents By LACHLAN MOORHEAD A SENIOR police officer from Endeavour Hills has urged parents not to tell their kids police will “lock them up” in jail, after several visits to local kindergartens in recent weeks. In the last few months local police have visited a number of kinders and pre-schools to speak to children about what police do and how they can stay safe. But Senior Sergeant Alan Dew said it was disappointing
that on each occasion when the kids were asked “What do police do?”, a number responded “They put us in jail if we are bad.” Sen Sgt Dew said the children were asked who told them this, and they said their parents. “Basically I think that scares the kids in relation to how they view police,” the policing veteran said. “We want kids not to be scared of us; we want kids who are scared to come to us for help.”
Sen Sgt Dew said many families in Casey came from other countries where policing styles may not be as “democratic” as those in Victoria. “I’ve always been big on community engagement, trying to engage particularly with young people,” he said. “...We want to be seen as part of the community. “We were a lot more detached from the community when I first joined, now we police with the community and for the community.”

Alcohol pressures AS a grandparent and the son of an alcoholic parent, I become more and more concerned about the pressure that teenagers come under, especially my granddaughters, and the peer pressure and excessive alcohol advertising which encourages them to consume alcohol in its various forms. With the stroke of a pen the government can legislate to restrict advertising as it has done for tobacco. You do not need to be a genius to realise how effective this has been in saving lives and improving the wellbeing of so many. I am yet to be convinced that excessive alcohol consumption is not a greater health risk than tobacco. With one stroke of a pen or the press of a button the government can delete the word tobacco and substitute alcohol. Can you imagine what benefits this would have and the only ones affected by this would be the alcohol and advertising industry. Let us hope there is a Federal politician out there who can implement a private member’s bill in an endeavour to restrict alcohol advertising and thereby save lives and improve wellbeing, especially our teenagers’. THIS idea of continuing with the construction of Bunjil Place is nothing but a quick rush for getting new offices for the council. The survey conducted is just an eyewash. How can a council with a population of 288,000 people ever think of such a humongous project with a survey of 82 per cent of 500 phone and online surveys - ridiculous! This project is to cost $125 million and only $10 million funding received from the Federal Government and begging the State Government for another handout. By LACHLAN MOORHEAD CLEANING staff at Myer Fountain Gate have been underpaid, the Fair Work Ombudsman has found. The investigation revealed nine cleaners at several Myer stores in Melbourne - including Fountain Gate - had been collectively short-changed $6300 for the pay period 4-31 May, this year. The discrepancies were discovered after Fair Work inspectors made an unannounced visit to the Fountain Gate store last December. Myer has a services agreement with RCS Cleaning Services, which sub-contracted to Pioneer Cleaning Australia Pty Ltd, which in turn sub-contracted to Preston-based A&K Saana Services. Myer terminated its contract with Pioneer in June. The Fair Work inspectors interviewed two Fountain Gate cleaners who worked for contractor A&K Saana Services, which was sub-contracted to clean Myer sites at Fountain Gate, Knox City, Highpoint, and Altona. The two cleaners were each
earning $17 an hour, regardless of the hours and days they worked. One was an employee, the other purportedly an independent contractor. The Fair Work Ombudsman subsequently determined they should both have been classified as employees and been paid at least $22.51 an hour. For the pay period 4-31 May, the inspectors found that the nine employees had been short-changed amounts ranging from $225 to $1009. It was found the employees were underpaid their minimum hourly rate, minimum four-hour engagement period, broken shift allowances, penalty rates for early and late shifts, overtime rates and penalties for weekend and
public holiday work. A Myer spokesman said the Fair Work Ombudsman had informed the company on 14 July that a “sub-contractor of Pioneer Facilities Services had acknowledged it was in breach of the Fair Work Act”. “Prior to this, Myer had been working with the FWO in its investigation into the cleaning services provided by Pioneer and its sub-contractors,” the spokesperson said. Followed and confronted, man avoids car-jacking A MAN has narrowly avoided being car-jacked in Doveton after being followed in an allegedly stolen car. The victim was driving along Acacia Street just after 7am last Wednesday, when he realised he was being followed by three men in a white Mercedes-Benz wagon.
The victim pulled into a random driveway to try and deter the men but they continued to tail him. The three men, described as Sudanese in appearance, got out of the car and demanded the victim’s keys. When the victim refused, a small altercation ensued before the offenders jumped back into

FOR mother of two Rebecca George, the thought of her autistic son wandering out of the school grounds again is ‘terrifying.’ “When they told me they found him on a side street I had a panic attack and was so concerned - what if no-one found him?” Rebecca said. Eight-year-old Alex George from Hampton Park had no idea where he was or what had happened when he left his primary school gate and mum Rebecca has since decided to take action in the shape of a Labrador. “My son is a safety risk he’s wandered out of school once but once is enough,” she said. An epilepsy and short-circuit seizure sufferer, Alex is forgetful and Rebecca has sought the help of service dog training to help her son in the long term. “We are on the waiting list to start an autism assistance dog training program and I’m hopeful raising and training a puppy with Alex will help keep him safe and improve his life,” Rebecca said. Restricted to one controlled playground frequented by Prep students at his school, Alex wears a high visibility vest at recess and lunch and Rebecca hopes an autism assistance dog will allow Alex more independence to play with his Grade 3 peers.

“He’s happy to play alongside other children but he doesn’t actively seek out social interactions and I think a dog will act as a social tool and help to improve Alex’s social and communication abilities. “Children and people will come up to Alex to pat the dog and it will be a kind of social aid for him,” she said. Eventually the dog will be able to alert people of any oncoming seizure and Rebecca said this would give her some peace of mind. “The dog will be trained as a seizure alert dog which means they can sometimes sense a seizure up to 10 minutes beforehand, which means nearby adults can get Alex into a safe place. “Alex is really excited for the puppy and he will be involved from the ground up, grooming,
feeding, washing, bonding and training the puppy,” she said. Easing angst and helping in stressful situations and in crowds, Rebecca said the dogs also acted as a waited blanket. “You can lay the child down on the floor and the dog will put its full weight over the child and that weight is calming and grounding for the child. “I really want it to work out for him - I feel bad as a mum because I have to restrict what he can do and where he can play and I feel so worried about him,” Rebecca said. An estimated figure of $9,000 will cover the pup's training and Rebecca has set up a Go Fund Me account to help assist financing the puppy. THE community of a Berwick primary school is in udder disbelief after their beloved cow statue was stolen during the school holidays. “Ingrid”, the life-sized cow, was awarded to Brentwood Park Primary nine years ago after students entered the Dairy Australia exhibit at the Royal Melbourne Show. Ingrid was stolen from her stall in the school’s fern garden some time during the recent holiday break. Ingrid had been decorated by Brentwood Primary students,
with at least 20 from Grades 5 and 6 giving up recesses and lunchtimes to create “Ingrid’s uniqueness”. School council member and parent Barb Scott said those who stole Ingrid would have had to enter the school grounds and spotted the cow, or known where it was. “It’s in a part of the school near the classrooms, near the garden bed, so unless someone knows the school and knows where it is, maybe if people have come in and used the facilities and walk past and seen it ...” Ms Scott said. “It’s a real, life-sized cow
... it was pegged down into the ground. “It’s a bright coloured big cow.” Ms Scott implored the thieves to return Ingrid. “It’s very iconic, the kids see it ... now that’s its gone it’s like this big bare patch in the garden,” she said. “To know that kids have decorated it ... it means a lot to the school and kids so bring it back, they can just bring it back anonymously.” To contact Brentwood Park Primary School, ring 9702 2022.

Bent on violence, but bailed By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A MAN with an alleged “extreme tendency for violence” has been released on bail after a magistrate deemed the applicant’s mental health issues were better treated in the community. The man faces charges over threatening police with a knife while he was ice-affected on 9 March. He has also been charged with criminal damage and breaching his bail conditions on 14 May by attending and damaging his parents’ Hampton Park house in breach of an intervention order. Informant Senior Constable Dean Mason, of Casey family violence police unit, told a court on 27 July that the man’s “extreme tendency for violence” had led to Frankston Hospital refusing to treat the man until police support arrived. During the May incident, the man damaged a plate-glass window and eventually allowed his mother to leave the home unharmed. Sen Const Mason described it as a “siege-like” scenario. There seemed to be a “breakdown” in the man’s regular medication and treatment, which led to the recent offending, Sen Const Mason said.
He referred to the man’s long history of mental illness and violence, which included 12 family violence intervention orders since 1995 as well as weapon and assault charges. The informant feared the man may relapse into using ice - a habit that began in the applicant’s teenage years. The man’s lawyer said the applicant’s mother had not felt threatened during the “siege” but had stayed in the house to protect her son. “She was worried how he would react to police,” the lawyer said. The man had not “responded well” to a recent change of mentalhealth service, and needed appropriate treatment, the lawyer said. Magistrate Barry Schultz was concerned that the man had been remanded in custody for two months. “Looking at the charges before me ... it’s unlikely he’ll get any further time in custody (when sentenced).” He said it was a matter of getting the right supports and treatment for the man to live in the community. “It’s one of those awful intersections between the law and the mental health system. “This man should not be in custody.”

IT EMPLOYS around 220 local residents, holds more than 100 race meetings across harness, thoroughbred and greyhound racing and now boasts multiple function centres for up to 800 people. The Cranbourne Turf Club has undergone a $4.3 million upgrade to its function centre and opened its rooms to the public last night (Tuesday). Part funded by the State Government, CEO at the club Neil Bainbridge said the extensive works were finished in October last year and he would like to see more local events held in the new facility. “At the moment we are holding about 60 non-race day functions a year and we’ve got a strong local push. “There are a lot of people who travel outside of Casey to hold their events, so hopefully this can be an option for them,” Mr Bainbridge said. The Legends Room on the ground floor now has the capacity to hold a cocktail function for up to 800 people and a seated event for around 550 people. “Under our previous layout some of the larger function rooms could only seat about 150 to 180 people, now the rooms can be separated and we have the ability to hold different events at the same time,” Mr Bainbridge said. A commercial grade kitchen was installed and three satellite kitchens to be able to service multiple parties at once, and one room has already been booked out for Saturday 12 September. The Champions Room which can seat up to 150 people was the pick of choice for Casey Grammar School's 21st Anniversary dinner dance. President of the schools Parents and Friends Committee Bharti Green said ‘the views from level two are absolutely beautiful, day and night.’ “Everything won us over about this venue, it’s very accommodating and from a dance floor to mingling tables, a presentation space and a sit down dinner it delivers it all. “Parking is great, the space is beautifully presented, we have a wide range of dishes to pick from for a three-course meal, we’ve got security on the night and we will definitely book events here again,” Ms Green said. The turf club is also expecting the $6 million oncourse stabling project to be completed as early as December this year.

Dinner will turn tables By LACHLAN MOORHEAD THE Greens MP who last week slammed Rosalie Crestani for her involvement in last month’s Reclaim Australia rally has invited the Casey councillor to a dinner with the Islamic Council of Victoria. South Eastern Metropolitan state Greens MP Nina Springle has sent the invitation a week after criticising Cr Crestani for emceeing last month’s Reclaim Australia rally in the city, which turned violent when anti-Islam and anti-racism groups attempted to clash across police lines. Ms Springle said Cr Crestani should be “condemned” for participating in the rally. Addressing last month’s Reclaim rally, Cr Crestani said: “Freedom of religion does not mean we accept the fundamental ideas of Islam, which do not allow for other religions. So that is why Islam needs reforming or it needs to leave Australia”. In her invitation to Cr Crestani sent on Tuesday, Ms
Springle acknowledged the pair’s “very different views on the Muslim community” but said the dinner could help them understand each other’s “perspectives” and “move past unhelpful conflicts.” “My hope is that through open dialogue and the ongoing building of trusting relationships, we can show pro-active leadership in the name of a harmonious multicultural society,” Ms Springle wrote. Cr Crestani has told Star News she plans to attend the meeting but questioned the veracity of Ms Springle’s invitation, after claiming she was told Ms Springle “slammed” her in State Parliament on Wednesday morning. Cr Crestani said it appeared “two-faced” to invite her to dinner and then criticise her. Cr Crestani hit back at Ms Springle’s original comments, claiming she was showing “gross ignorance”. “Why would a daugh-
ter of an immigrant support Reclaim if she didn’t feel strongly about wanting security and safety in Australia?” Cr Crestani said. “And that’s what my presence there was for. “And if she (Ms Springle) did her homework, she would see half the attendees were migrants, they just want Australia to be free from terrorism and free from the effects of Marxism and to maintain our culture.” Cr Crestani distanced herself and Reclaim Australia from some of the more extreme right-wing protesters, including a man with Nazi tattoos who joined the antiIslam protesters. She said if Reclaim was perceived as “racist” it was due to media coverage of the event and “not from our end”. “There were a couple guys that stood up with swastikas - you’re going to get a few people that want to jeopardise your core message, we can’t help that.”

Melbourne-born Kirsty Sword Gusmao, who was married to the former President and Prime Minister of East Timor Xanana Gusmao for 15 years, will be the guest of honour at the special presentation to be held on 14 August at the Narre Warren council chambers and
hosted by Casey Mayoress Kay Morland. Ms Gusmao was recently awarded the Order of Australia (OAM) in acknowledgement of her many years fighting for East Timor’s independence and the vital role she continues to play in the developing nation. While she was the First Lady of East Timor, Ms Gusmao set up the Alola Foundation in 2001 to raise awareness of the widespread sexual violence against women and girls in Timor-Leste during militia attacks in 1999. The foundation was named
after Juliana ‘Alola’ dos Santos, who was brutally raped and taken to Indonesian West Timor during this period. The foundation provides a wide range of important handson support for the women and children of Timor-Leste. An evening with Kirsty Sword Gusmao AM will be held on Friday 14 August from 7.30pm to 9pm, with tickets $25, and $15 for students, inclusive of a light supper. Manufacturing spreads wings into south-east Professor Geoff Brooks said Dandenong is a city of makers.
By CASEY NEILL THE region’s manufacturing mouthpiece plans to grow its non-Dandenong membership. South East Melbourne Manufacturers Alliance (SEMMA) held its AGM at Sandown Racecourse on Thursday 30 July. President Simon Whitely told the 150-strong crowd that SEMMA had about 200 member companies, only 40 per cent based in Dandenong. “With support from a number of regional councils we are seeking to reposition SEMMA beyond the boundaries of our historical Dandenong base, with the ambition to unite the manufacturing sector of the entire region,” he said. Executive officer Adrian Boden encouraged members to inform SEMMA of the issues they were facing and possible solutions. “I am always ready to meet with any company looking to extend its network,” he said. “Collaboration among our members will not only increase the local pie but improve our capabilities. “Between our companies, we have an incredibly diverse range of capabilities and technologies that could only benefit from more collaboration.” Mr Boden said SEMMA was in the past year instrumental in securing a bi-partisan pre-election commitment to 50 per cent local content in Victorian trains and trams. SEMMA has forged a new partnership with the CSIRO and Swinburne University that has facilitated more than 30 researchers visiting seven small to medium enterprise (SMEs) members. “Both sides are hopefully much more open and understanding of each other’s issues and of possible opportunities,” he said. SEMMA also announced new deals for members from Nissan and 1st Contact Foreign Exchange at the event.
“THE battle for manufacturing is as much a battle for talented people as anything else.” This was the key message from guest speaker Professor Geoff Brooks at the Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce Premier Regional Business Awards breakfast at Sandown Greyhounds on 29 July. He said many talented students eyed medicine or law studies. “We need to convince them to follow this path,” he said. Prof Brooks co-ordinates and develops manufacturing-related research and education across Swinburne University of Technology and is a metallurgy expert. He spoke about the future directions of manufacturing. Prof Brooks graduated as an engineer in 1983 and “got the research bug” a few years later. He drove to Melbourne University and approached the engineering faculty about a PhD. They asked what he knew about metallurgy and he was soon on his way to visit John Floyd in Kitchen Road, Dandenong. “The technology developed in Kitchen Road, Dandenong, is used in smelting around the world,” he said. “John Floyd had an enormous impact on my career.” Prof Brooks listed ways to turn around Australian manufacturing, including a shift to higher-value products and ser-
vices, adapting existing strengths to new circumstances and linking manufacturing to innovation. He said innovation was about making the most of new materials and technology, business models and approaches, and novel designs and products. Prof Brooks said the digitisation of design had enabled testing in virtual environments, speeding up the prototyping process, and rapid sharing that removed borders. “I don’t think we’ve fully recognised the potential of it,” he said. He said technology also made finding specialised skills and new ideas easier than ever before. “That’s a huge benefit of the world we’re living in at the moment,” he said. Prof Brooks urged guests to take inspiration from the late Steve Jobs’s efforts at Apple. “Make the consumer experience the heart of how you develop a product,” he said. Vacuum developer James Dyson set out to remove the word hoovering from the world’s vocabulary, vowing to make a better product. Prof Brooks said this was an example of determination to follow through on a clever idea. He also paraphrased 2012 Young Australian of the Year Marita Cheng who said the country needed to encourage children to become makers, not just consumers. “You’re a city of makers and you should be very, very proud of that,” he said.

Warriors out at final hurdle By RUSSELL BENNETT FRUSTRATING. That’s probably the best word to sum up the Pakenham Warriors’ season in Division 2 of Big V men’s basketball. It was the prevailing thought from coach Jeff Reid, who was still bitterly disappointed when he spoke to the News in the days following his team’s 9784 loss to the Giants in their elimination final in Coburg on Saturday night. The Warriors finished fifth on the Division 2 standings with 10 wins and eight losses from their 18 games, but they won their last five games of the regular season - giving a glimpse as to just what the roster was really capable of all year. “I guess the thing that frustrates me the most is that it feels like we wasted a great opportunity,” Reid said. “We definitely had the talent.” One of those wins in the final five games was against the Giants, but they also dropped one against them at the final buzzer back in round five. That result, along with the Warriors “not turning up” against Mornington in round 12 compounded Reid’s frustration. “Coburg finished a game ahead of us in the end,” he said. “We’d been playing really well in front of our home crowd, so that would have been a big advantage for us. “You can’t afford to drop those close ones.
“I’m really disappointed it took until five weeks before the finals for us to really turn it on.” Reid said his side entered Saturday’s game with a positive mindset, adding that “everything seemed to be clicking” on the back of their winning streak. But the Warriors had three points of emphasis heading into the final, and fell away in each - pushing the tempo at every opportunity, attacking Coburg’s bigs and getting them in early foul trouble, and staying disciplined in getting into their offensive sets. Pakenham was up by a point at half-time - 43-42 - but Reid described that half as “our worst half of basketball in six or seven weeks”. The Warriors then only managed 11 points in the third, due to over-dribbling and losing their focus on team-first. “And there were just mental mistakes, like one of their guys leaking out and no-one going with him,” he said. Star import Darren Galloway finished with 26 points, 7 rebounds, 4 steals and 4 assists but he also picked up four turnovers, and he was the only Warriors player to record more than one dime. “Darren got his, which was great, but he’d been bringing his team-mates into the game a lot more over the past few weeks,” Reid said. “We probably reverted a little bit to selfish ball.” The Warriors’ cause was
(literally) hurt by big man and captain Paul Phillips rolling his troublesome ankle in the first quarter. “It was a real loss for us not having him out there,” Reid said. “The way he bangs in the paint, his bodywork, and his leadership; not just his rebounds.” Mweeba Maluma finished with 21 points, 11 rebounds, and 7 assists for Coburg; while Mabor Maniel picked up 17 points, 10 rebounds, 4 assists but had 6 turnovers. Jordan Harding had 22 points, 13 rebounds, and 4 assists but had five turnovers of his own. For Pakenham, Darrell Morgan finished with 15 points and 8 rebounds on 7-19 shooting, while Sean Armstrong had 17 points and Hayden Davey 11 points and 7 rebounds. Reid said he wasn’t sure if he’d be coaching the team next season, adding “I’ve got a lot of thinking to do”. But the emotion of what the ruthless competitor deemed to be a premature end to his team’s season would no doubt still have been running high. “Everyone said they were happy and proud of the job I did (as coach),” he said. “The club put no pressure on me at the start - just that they expected us to be competitive in every game. “Overall, I’d say the season wasn’t too bad.” Just ... frustrating.

LET’S cut straight to the chase - the Pakenham Silverbacks will this Sunday play the biggest game in their history and they need your support. They’ll face off against the Bendigo Dragons from 1.30pm this Sunday on Rawling Field at Sydney Pargeter Reserve in Endeavour Hills. The winner earns the right to battle it out for the Gridiron Victoria Division 2 championship at the Latrobe City Sports and Entertainment Stadium, in Morwell, on 15 August. “There’s a fair bit of excitement around the club - we’ve got a lot of belief we can knock them off,” said Kane Latham, one of the Silverbacks’ inaugural players, about this Sunday’s game. The Dragons finished on top of the Division 2 standings with nine wins from their 10 games - including 42-0 and 22-0 wins over the Silverbacks in their two encounters. But Latham and his Pakenham team-mates have the belief that they can cause something special. He said their training had been reflective of their belief in each other, and of their cause and he praised coach Paul Tindall, who only started at the club this season. “Getting everyone on board and on the same page at a gridiron club can be a difficult job, but he’s done it really well,” Latham said. Latham’s Silverbacks team-mate, and club founder and president Richie Howlett said of the game this week: “Making the finals this year really validates all the hard work put in by the players, coaches and committee. “Being our closest game to Pakenham this year, we’re really looking forward to the sideline support from family, friends and local fans to give us the edge in what’s going to be a tough game.”

Holt with a hunger By DAVID NAGEL CRANBOURNE champion Marc Holt is craving team success after celebrating his 200th game with six goals in the Eagles’ 23-point victory over Berwick at Casey Fields. Holt captained the Eagles to their drought-breaking premiership win in 2011, a day that looked set to spark the club into a long and sustained run of success. But, as captain for the last three years, he has suffered the pain of grand final defeats despite kicking 157, 118 and 103 goals in those seasons. “I can’t sit around with my mates in years to come and keep telling them about how many goals I’ve kicked, you just can’t excited about it because we lost those grand finals,” he said. “They mean nothing, the 80 goals I kicked in 2011 are the best 80 goals I’ve ever kicked because they mean something and got us a premiership.” Holt starred for the Eagles on Saturday, kicking five goals in the third quarter as the Eagles piled on 8.5 to 1.4 to take a five-goal lead to the final break. The Wickers regained their composure, but a wildly inaccurate 1.8 to 1.1 final quarter saw Rhys Nisbet’s men go down to the Eagles for the second time this year. Michael Boland was terrific in the ruck for the Eagles, who had Michael Theodoridis, with four goals, and Chace Struth also in redhot form. Ben Kearns was outstanding for the Wickers, kicking four goals with plenty of highlights. Doveton earned the right to play in its first finals series
since 2009 after a typically gutsy and determined ninepoint triumph over Narre Warren at Robinson Reserve. Ironically it was back in 2009 when the Doves last defeated the Magpies, the two clubs now set for a mouth-watering showdown in the elimination final at ROC in a few weeks’ time. Big-name recruits Jake Dermott, Russell Gabriel and Sam Raru were superb for the Doves, while the under-rated Shaun Semmens and Simon Black were also impressive. Kerem Baskaya took his tally to 59 for the season with a four-goal haul for the Magpies. Hampton Park coach Matt O’Neil was quick to shift the focus after his team cracked its first win of the season with a runaway 31-point victory over ROC at Starling Road. “Forget about me, I’m just rapt for the players and supporters and to see their faces after what some of them have been through makes it all worthwhile,” said O’Neil, who had to Google the club theme song midway through the final term. The Redbacks trailed by 11 points at the final break, but five goals in a quarter to Nathan Carver, who ended the day with six, saw the Redbacks power home for victory. Pakenham’s finals dreams are shattered after going down to Beaconsfield by 49 points at Holm Park Reserve. The Eagles outscored the Lions in every quarter, with a 5.3 to 2.1 second term the defining stage of the contest. Taylor Joyce kicked five, while Damien Johnston and Nick McPherson were also in good nick for the winners. Tooradin had the bye.

Magpies test the Doves By DAVID NAGEL SATURDAY was the perfect day to jump in the car and go driving with all four travelling teams returning home with four points safely tucked away in the boot. Sixth-placed Doveton showed the level of depth in the South East Football Netball League this year when it pushed the undefeated Narre Warren all the way at Robinson Reserve. The Doves lost by five goals, 56-51, but were superimpressive according to Magpies coach Jade Heinrich. “If they make it they will be a team to watch out for because that was definitely our hardest game for the season,” Jade said. “It was tough and I was really proud that we were able to still win under that type of pressure.” The Magpies bounded out of the blocks, scoring 18 goals to 10 in the first quarter, to take a real grip
on the contest. And it was their usual stars that were at it again, with Erin Clark and Leigh Taylor through the midcourt feeding Elly Stewart and Tayla Shannon with style during a dominant first period of play. Cara Humbert and Aggie Seeto were superb in defence for the Doves; while Rahni Samason was once again impressive under the ring. Berwick ensured its 60th birthday celebrations were in full-swing on Saturday night after a 44-38 victory over Cranbourne at Casey Fields. Emily LaRoche, Sarah McDermott and Olivia Macente got on top through the middle of the court for the Wickers, while Jodie Cranston, Claire Rottier and Rebecca Vickers took turns in tormenting Cranbourne’s goal-shooters. Tara Cecil and Alanah Hardy were terrific in defence for the Eagles. Pakenham locked in the double chance with a grind-
ing 45-34 victory over Beaconsfield at Holm Park Reserve. The Lions’ team defence was superb in the first quarter, keeping the Eagles to just six goals, to open up a fivegoal lead which they kept until three quarter time. The Lions flexed their muscles in the final term, scoring 12 goals to seven to open up a 10-point advantage over the Eagles on the ladder. Hampton Park continued its dominance over ROC this year with a brilliant 63-34 victory at Starling Road. Maybe the thought of playing at this year’s grand final venue appealed to the Redbacks, who wasted little time in asserting their will on the contest. Kylie Kibble’s side has lost just two games for the season and is certainly a front-runner to roll up for the big dance on Saturday 19 September.

Tough guy lacking punch By DEREK OGDEN AS much as a small 1.2-litre three-cylinder hatchback could be considered aggressive, the new Micra is more so, according to Nissan. The city runabout has ‘a new style that delivers a stronger, more assertive and dynamic look,’ its maker opines. With almost 7 million sales under its belt in more than 30 years, the Nissan small car now checks in with a long list of upgrades, including revised spec levels, a new look and a slew of technical innovations. The Micra, known as Nissan March in some countries, is built in four centres around the world and sold globally. All cars coming to Australia are made in India. Nissan Micra ST manual hits the market at $13,490, plus on-road costs, an automatic version ups the price to $15,290, while the Ti comes in automatic only for $16,990. Nissan made the ST auto available for our week’s road test. The smallest Nissan in Australia has come in for some big changes with more than 50 per cent new body panels. It now features the Nissan ‘VMotion’ front grille now delivering a stronger, more distinctive and dynamic look. This frontal shape was introduced
in the SUV and 4WD Nissans, yet looks good on this passenger car. In addition, the latest Micra sports a new bonnet, front guards, restyled front and rear bumper, new headlights and rear lamps as well as new-design wheels. Micra Ti grade enjoys 15-inch alloy wheels, a rear spoiler, foglights and auto headlights. Inside, the surroundings are of a higher standard than previously, with trim and surface finishes being given a quality look and feel. All variants feature a new centre cluster, updated dashboard instrumentation and seat trim. Power windows are now standard. The top grade 2015 Micra Ti takes the 5.8-inch touch screen satellite navigation, reverse camera and LED rear lights. Auxiliary port and Bluetooth phone system with audio streaming are now standard. The 2015 Micra retains the 1.2-litre, three-cylinder petrol unit producing 56 kilowatts of power and 104 Nm of torque Nissan rates fuel economy on the combined urban / highway cycle at 5.9 litres per 100 kilometres for the fivespeed manual transmission grade and 6.5 litres per 100 kilometres for the four-speed automatics. braking system with electronic brakeforce distribution and brake assist - found in more expensive cars - are standard Micra features. Nissan Micra does not take ‘forever and a day’ to reach 100 kilometres an hour from a standing start, it only seems like it. On more than one occasion during our test the Micra made a meal of getting up to speed when filtering into motorway traffic from a slip road: practice makes perfect, it’s a matter of becoming used to the car. An unusually high fuel consumption of 5.1 litres per 100 kilometres for such a small engine on the motorway requires some explanation. Although of a small three-cylinder, 1.2-litre capacity it only has a fourspeed automatic transmission. At maximum motorway speed of 110 km/h the engine is revving at 3000 rpm. In an urban context the Micra was an exemplar of frugality at around seven to eight litres per 100 kilometres. With all its buffing, the 2015 Nissan Micra does not quite make it with the tough-guy image.
