PAKENHAM will be the next stop in a former soldier’s epic journey from Everest to Kilimanjaro via Bass Strait and the Kokoda Track. Walking Wounded founder Brian Freeman is carrying a Roll of Honour with the names of the 41 fallen Australians in the Afghanistan conflict and is aiming to help those who have returned assimilate back into the community. He aims to raise $2 million to support the psychological recovery of returned Australian soldiers. Funds raised will go towards suicide prevention and intervention, counselling, employment guidance and job placements. Mr Freeman began his Great Traverse in earthquake-ravaged Nepal, where they were at Base Camp and could not hit the summit, but spent their time helping quake victims. He then began a 4800 kilometre north-tosouth trek through Australia at Cape York. When he reaches Port Welshpool on 4 August, he will kayak across Bass Strait, then continue to the southern tip of Tasmania before taking on the Kokoda Track. He will then climb Africa’s highest mountain, the iconic Mount Kilimanjaro, before handing the Honour Roll to Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove in Canberra on Remembrance Day. Mr Freeman and his Great Traverse entourage arrive in Melbourne this Saturday, where Dick Custerson from A Positive Move and Silvio Marinelli from Highview Accounting are hosting a Tribute to the Anzacs event in his honour. He leaves Melbourne on Sunday morning and will arrive in Pakenham at 2pm, where members of the Pakenham RSL, supported by Cardinia Shire and Star News Group, will host a reception. Lunch will be provided for a gold coin donation and Mr Freeman will speak about his journey to date. The group then heads to Kooweerup for the night and the local secondary college will host a breakfast in his honour on Monday morning, before a few students will join him on the first leg of that day’s trip to Leongatha. After 20 years of service as an infantry and special forces soldier in the Australian Army, Mr Freeman’s military journey led him to East Timor, where he was employed as an operations officer alongside Major-General Peter Cosgrove,

Pakenham’s racing with the best AN already huge year has got bigger and better for the Pakenham Racing Club after it was shortlisted as one of five nominees for the CrownBet Country Racing Victoria Club of the Year. Pakenham is joined by Ballarat, Kilmore, Kyneton-Hanging Rock and Wodonga as finalists, with the winner to be announced at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre on Saturday 29 August. The winner will receive a $20,000 Country Racing Victoria funding grant. The clubs will be judged on a number of criteria, including attendance, community involvement, and profitability and delivering a top-quality race day experience. Pakenham Racing Club chairman Don Duffy said the club was delighted to be a finalist for the coveted club of the year award. “This nomination recognises the success of the Pakenham Racing Club’s return to racing, and the construction of our new world class racing and training venue,” Duffy said. It was a big year for the Pakenham Racing Club, with the opening of its brand-new $72 million racing and training facility, Racing.com Park. CRV chief executive Scott Whiteman congratulated all five clubs on being recognised as finalists.
“It was a difficult task to narrow the field to five finalists after such a successful country racing season,” Whiteman said. “Ballarat, Kilmore, Kyneton, Pakenham and Wodonga continue to set a high standard for all of our racing clubs and this nomination is recognition for their hard work.” Meanwhile, the PRC rolled out the red carpet for the more mature members of the community on Tuesday at its Senior’s Raceday at Tynong. Beating the black spots By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM A TOTAL of four Cardinia Shire black spots will now receive major safety upgrades, after a second announcement from the Federal Government last week. Member for McMillan Russell Broadbent and Assistant Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Jamie Briggs released details of the funding last Friday 24 July. It comes after MP for La Trobe Jason Wood made an announcement detailing two other Cardinia road upgrades last week. Under the plan, the stretch of Army Road between Princes Highway and Windermere Boulevard will receive a $354,000 upgrade to its street lighting, while the intersection of Henry Road and McGregor Road in Pakenham will also receive a major upgrade. At a cost of $38,000, the overhaul will combat right-turn vehicles failing to give way to through traffic by allowing full control of the right turn on the north approach and partial control on the south approach. Mr Broadbent said the works would significantly improve safety on local roads. “Black spot projects target dangerous roads to save lives and reduce road trauma, ensuring our local road network is safer for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians,” he said. “The good thing about the Black Spot Program is that anyone can suggest an intersection or section of road they believe should be considered for a safety upgrade.” Mr Briggs added that the projects would also deliver economic benefits. “These extra projects are expected to save an additional 10 lives and prevent 512 injury crashes over 10 years, and deliver economic dividends of around $169 million,” he said. “As a result of the Abbott Government’s re-

Men(ding) their ways By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS HOW is it possible to deliver “success” at a men’s behaviour change program? LifeWorks Relationship Counselling and Education family violence co-ordinator Margaret Hodge says there is often more work to do for men after they attend the 26hour course over 13 weeks. She says men are advised to continue their ongoing behaviour change after the course, to work on factors such relationship and communication skills “We know through any behavioural change process, people may lapse and relapse. “It can take time for them to hold down a respectful relationship.” Ms Hodge instead sets a goal of ensuring the man’s partner feels safe in the relationship, that she has “options”. “Their is no clear definition of success; it’s more about how the partner says the man’s behaviour has changed and how safe she feels in the relationship.” During the course, the men’s partners and ex-partners are supported. They are offered support by a women’s contact worker to ensure that their safety is maintained and referral options explored if this is required. “It keeps the men accountable particularly if we hear about a breach of an intervention order or stalking behaviour,” Ms Hodge says. “It’s up to us to name that, bring that up with the man and to let the police know, or encourage the man to speak to police themselves – this

At the group, there are male and female co-facilitators modelling respectful behaviour to one another. They also deliver information on how to keep the relationship “safe”, and about old-fashioned attitudes such as a misplaced sense of entitlement. The men are taught to regulate their emotions, improve their communication and relationship skills,
about the impact of aggression on others and blame-shifting. Her colleague Ms Hodge says men show varying attitudes towards their self-examination. “There’s a sense of ‘poor men’ – we’re the ones who have to go to court, who have to undergo intervention orders. “We have some men very open and willing to look at themselves. They are very aware of their behaviour and take responsibility - that is very encouraging to me. “The key to a man’s changing is willingness to make the change. It’s not to blame her all the time but his willingness to consider the impact
that his behaviour has on the family. “The common change comes from seeing the way they have been in the past hasn’t been helpful. They have to do something different.” Some men struggle to overcome being raised to believe the father was the dominant household figure. They are confronted when women pursue careers and regard themselves as equals. “They try to implement the same type of structure in their family,” Ms Hodge says. “It’s a huge change for men in their fifties and sixties. After many years of controlling the family, then their status in the family changes.”
Change need A FAMILY-violence group says men’s behaviour change programs are under-funded in the face of soaring numbers of family violence offenders in the south-east. The outer south-east and outer south metro regions have the longest waiting lists for behaviour change programs in the state – nearly 300 people waiting up to 11 months as of March. In a submission to the state Royal Commission into family violence, the group No to Violence argues for state funding for an extra 1000 program places. The increase would help match the rise in family violence incidents reported to police – up nearly 50 per cent in Casey since 2010, 25 per cent up in Greater Dandenong and 200 per cent in Cardinia. “Demand pressures will continue to escalate as family violence systems agencies – police, courts, child protection and corrections – continue to improve in their ability to identify, assess and respond to family violence,” No to Violence stated. Under current constraints, only a “very small” number of men on family violence intervention orders are directed to attend a men’s behaviour change program, No to Violence stated. It also argues for the program length to be doubled to six months. “For many men, the journey towards nonviolence is long and difficult, and, unfortunately, there are no ‘quick fixes’. “The work to invite resistant men towards attitudinal, behavioural and personal change is highly specialised and potentially risky if not done carefully.” Sue Pratt, of LifeWorks Relationship Counselling and Education, said magistrates ordering men to enrol was creating “extensive demand”. She said she would be surprised if the coming semester’s course wasn’t filled within three days. LifeWorks family violence co-ordinator Margaret Hodge said course members used to be predominantly voluntary but were now mostly required to attend.

SMALL Business, Innovation and Trade Minister Adem Somyurek has resigned after an inquiry dismissed his denials of intimidating his staff. On Tuesday, Mr Somyurek - who is a Dandenong-based South Eastern Metropolitan MP - said his resignation shouldn’t be taken as an admission of guilt over allegations by his chief-of-staff Dimity Paul. “I maintain my innocence,” Mr Somyurek said. He said the inquiry had not found him engaging in “abusive, threatening, intimidating, aggressive and inappropriate“ conduct that put his staff’s health and safety at risk. “I’m happy to report that (the) inquiry clears me of these allegations.” Mr Somyurek characterised the allegations as “payback“ from the union, the Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees Association. He demanded the resignations of Deputy Premier James Merlino and the Premier’s chief-of-staff John McLindon. A report by former County Court judge Michael Strong stated Mr Somyurek had “diminished, to some degree, Ms Paul’s confidence in her personal safety while in the Minister’s presence” on one occasion. During that time, the minis-
spoke to her aggressively, the report found. Mr Somyurek’s evidence on these events was found to be “unfavourable”. “He has denied too much,” Mr Strong said. “He contends that evidence given by Ms Paul and Mr Smith is not merely or exaggerated but largely fabricated - especially in the case of Ms Paul. “I am comfortably satisfied this is not so.” The report found Ms Paul exhibited “occasional conscious exaggeration”, and Mr Smith showed an “element of unconscious exaggeration ... consistent with him being an enthusiastic advocate in his own cause”. “I am however satisfied that the evidence of each of them on critical issues was far more reliable than the evidence of the Minister.” Mr Strong said the incidents weren’t serious enough for reporting to the Victorian WorkCover Authority. In a statement, Mr Andrews said the report by Mr Strong made “deeply concerning” findings against Mr Somyurek. “The Minister’s behaviour, as outlined by Mr Strong, is unacceptable.” It found that the former minister “caused distress to staff and adversely affected their well-being”, Mr Andrews said.

That intersection started to get bad after the Pound Road, Hallam, traffic lights were turned off. Why doesn’t the council get its head out of the sand and re-open Centre Road? By doing that it will take a lot of traffic away from Shrives Road. Just fix up the bridge over the creek and put a set of traffic lights at Hallam Road and a speed limit of 60-70 km/h. THE article Dividing Line Of Racism (News, 23 July) clearly demonstrates the wide abuses of local government and breaches of the Local Government Act 1989 and the Councillors' Code of Conduct by councillor Rosalie Crestani in her official role and participation as party member of the Rise Up Australia political party and Catch the Fire church ministry at the Reclaim Australia rally on 18 July 2015. It is understood that this religious political party opposes multiculturalism and that includes Aboriginal people and Islamics. In her official MC role she states: “Freedom of religion does not mean we accept the fundamental ideas of Islam, which do not allow for other religions. “So that is why Islam needs reforming or it needs to leave Australia.” Her statements at this politically rally and support of the Rise Up Australia political party opens her up to breaches of the Act, Councillors’ Code of Conduct and her lack of commitment to local government and the Casey constituents, so why is she falsely representing the ward of Four Oaks as a falsified councillor? It is now time the Minister for Local Government Natalie Hutchins MP and Premier Daniel Andrews intervened to officially clean up Casey council, its 11 elected Casey councillors and Casey management. The issues of this council supporting this racist rally clearly demonstrates the actions and breaches of this council both past and present. Surrendering our culture MR REIHER, although not as old as your uncle, I too was born in the first half of the 20th century and well recall the bigotry of the time (Tolerate The Intolerant, News, 23 July).
However, in my view you have overlooked some very important differences - we are gradually surrendering our culture and have only ourselves to blame for the lack of integration by Muslim migrants. Catholics did have their own schools however they were open to all, which I understand is not the case with Muslim schools. We were not forced to eat food that was acceptable to Catholics, in fact I read recently where a function removed pork from a menu to avoid offending the Muslim attendees. I never once saw meat removed from a menu on a Friday to avoid upsetting the Catholics! Catholics did not advocate their own law. We did not ban the morning prayer or Christmas themes from our schools for fear of upsetting other religions. Catholics did not hold prayer meetings on the streets causing traffic congestion. Catholics did not say that a woman wearing a short skirt deserved rape. Imagine the outcry if the Catholics wanted (and received) their own prayer room at the MCG! Do you want me to go on? I disagree with our current level of migration intake not because of racism but due only to the fact that we cannot afford it and lack sufficient infrastructure. Eight years ago when in Sydney I noticed a couple of bedrolls in Belmore Park. There was an item on the TV recently indicating that there are now 50 tents housing the homeless at the park. It would be interesting to know how many refugees, if any, live there. If we cannot look after our own, what is going on? We have all seen the huge problems ex-

Scapegoat failures IN THE Herald-Sun report Council Rates To Cut Deeper (25 July) Andrew Jefferson makes a valid point. Council rates need to be kept in check. The problem is can the Victorian Labor Government be trusted not to offset lower average rates increases by councils in future with increased taxes in other jurisdictions? What is the point if the Andrews Government is not going to subject all of its own taxes to the same CPI standard as council rates? For example, the Fire Services Property Levy has not been limited to changes in the CPI next financial year. Why? The Labor Government has decided to run a budget surplus and pass most of the costs of restoring the CFA/MFA budgets onto ratepayers. There are also alternatives to imposing council mergers on local communities. Bigger councils do not necessarily mean more effective checks and balances. In light of former Frankston state MP Geoff Shaw’s and now Federal Speaker Bronwyn Bishop’s extravagance, it seems likely that local government may really be a scapegoat for failures elsewhere. Cancer victim’s bike stolen By GEORGIA WESTGARTH IT WAS his first ride back after two years off the bike - and now his last. Narre Warren resident of 15 years Richard Sanders’ BMC dual suspension bicycle was stolen from inside his garage after his long-awaited ride. The avid cyclist used to regularly ride his beloved bike at Lysterfield Park - until he was diagnosed with kidney cancer three years ago. He now lives with end stage renal disease. “I’m on dialysis 20 hours a week and with all the drugs every two weeks I get some energy back and was ready to get back on the bike - I’m getting back into shape and was really excited about riding again,” Mr Sanders said. After leaning his bike, worth more than $8000, up against the garage wall, Mr Sanders hit the garage door button and listened to the 12-month-old motor release the door. “It wasn’t until I went to get my dialysate (dialysis fluid) that I noticed my bike was missing - all I can think of is

that the door hit the bike's rear tyre and sprang up again. "We have an alarm system, the door motor is relatively new and nothing else was damaged or stolen,” Mr Sanders explained. The 42-year-old’s bicycle helmet, Rudy Project transitional lens glasses and Garmin Edge GPS trip computer were also stolen with the bike.
Mr Sanders said in all his years of riding at Lysterfield Park, he’d never seen a bike like his. “It’s the same bicycle Cadel Evans rides and I’d love it back,” he said. The bike was stolen on Monday 20 July between 7pm and 10pm at Mr Sanders’ Hampshire Drive property in Narre Warren South and Mr Sanders believes it was an opportunistic thief.
After a walk around the area the following day, Mr Sanders was disappointed he didn’t come across his helmet. “After wearing my helmet for two years and sweating in it, it’s pretty yuck, so I thought it might have been lying in the park or dumped on the footpath,” he said. Something that took his mind off everything else, cycling was Mr Sanders’ outlet. “I feel free when I’m on the bike, I don’t have to think about anything else but riding and mentally you can escape from the hospitals, medication and dialysis - you’re just free,” he explained. Now making sure he stands in the garage and watches the door roll all the way down, Mr Sanders blames himself. “I think I’m a victim of my own stupidity,” he said. Delia does her bit in fight against cervical cancer EIGHTEEN months ago, Delia Beattie received some devastating news - she was diagnosed with cervical cancer. “I was 34 and healthy. Obviously, it was a huge shock and something that you could never prepare for,” she said. Now 35-year-old Delia and friend Jenny Brown are preparing themselves for a challenge of a different kind.
The pair will take to the hills of Bhutan later this year to raise money to vaccinate underprivileged young women against cervical cancer. After major surgery, treatment and an extensive recovery period, Delia said the trek presented the perfect opportunity to do something for the community. “This all started when I was given the all-clear in April, and
I just thought I really need to do something to show my appreciation for everything that everyone did for me,” she said. Drug, explosives charges laid THE bomb response unit was called to an address in Cambridge Street, Berwick, after the Casey CIU found a suspicious device during a drugs warrant in the early hours of Thursday 23 July. Senior Constable Samantha Russell said the device was declared explosive material, but wasn’t a bomb. “The public shouldn’t fear for their safety, it appears to be an isolated incident,” she said. Some other explosive material was found at the address, and a 43-year-old Berwick woman was arrested and released on bail and due to appear at the Dandenong Magistrates’ Court in August. A 44-year-old Doveton man was charged with explosive and drug offences and remains in custody. Sen Const Russell said she found more ice on the man than inside the home.

Presidents in residence By CASEY NEILL NINE presidents will take the reins at Rotary Club of Narre Warren throughout the year ahead. President-elect Bruce Armstrong suffered a heart attack just days before the club’s changeover dinner on 24 June and was unable to take on the role in his weakened state. So at the rescheduled event at Kilgerron Restaurant in Narre Warren South last Wednesday 22 July, outgoing president Lyn Pickering held onto the presidential collar. She’ll lead the club for the next month before other past presidents take turns at the helm. Phillip McMillan, Tim Fisher, Roger McGill, Steve Shutt, Tim Carswell, Roger Hall, Richard Edwards and Ian Pickering all put up their hands to help out. “We decided it would take more than one person to replace Bruce,” Ms Pickering said. District governor Merv Williams, accompanied by his wife Christine, said the club had to nominate just one person as president for Rotary International purposes. “I think it might throw their database out otherwise!” he said. So he handed the collar back to Lyn Pickering. “There’s a great deal of energy in this club and you are to be congratulated,” Mr Williams said.
He also spoke about the year ahead in Rotary and encouraged the club to adapt to changing times and reach out to new members. Mr Williams then assisted in inducting Moses Adepoju into the Rotary Club of Narre Warren. Alongside Mr Adepoju were his wife Christianah and two of his five children, 21-year-old twin sons Kenny and Tai. He moved to Australia 33 years ago and has a PhD in counselling. “Our age level has gone down but our IQ level has gone up a
lot,” Ms Pickering said. Mr Adepoju said he was honoured to be inducted. “I pledge to do my best to serve the community that’s given so much to me and my family,” he said. Instead of presenting flowers to Ms Williams as is customary, Ms Pickering presented her with a cheque for $500 to go towards Rotarians Against Malaria’s project in the Solomon Islands. Ms Williams told the club that mosquitoes were the world’s deadliest animal, causing 725,000 people to die each year.

AN ANTI-POKIES academic says a $6 million-plus rise in annual pokie losses in Casey is a sign that pokie venues have “learnt to better exploit” their machines. Dr Charles Livingstone, a publichealth lecturer at Monash University, also slammed the State Government’s imminent trial of voluntary pre-commitment gambling limits as “useless” for problem gamblers. According to government statistics, $119.4 million was lost in Casey poker machines in 2014-15 more than $2 million a week. In neighbouring Greater Dandenong, losses rose by nearly $7 million to $117 million. Dr Livingstone said venues had learnt to “exploit” their machines better after assuming control when Tatts and Tabcorp were “shown the door” in 2012. “They are moving the machines to greater disadvantage - that’s where we’re seeing the greater concentration.” Despite regional caps on pokies numbers, Cranbourne - with five venues - has the greatest pokies concentration in Casey. Dr Livingstone said ATM withdrawal limits in venues were being circumvented by EFTPOS withdrawals. He said it was possible for problem gamblers to draw out $200 a time without a limit on the number of transactions. “Under the new system, you could take out $200 a minute if you wanted to.” He said the State Government’s trial of voluntary pre-commitment in 14 venues was “as good as useless” at protecting problem gamblers.

Cartridges in pants By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A BERWICK ice-addict has been found by police with a sawn-off shotgun under his car seat and live cartridges in his underpants - a situation described by a judge as “chilling”. Dandenong-based magistrate Barry Schultz, in jailing Adam Rouget for 12 months, said the firearm used at close range was the “most potent deadly weapon”. “It’s a weapon to kill. “In the hands of someone on ice, it’s utterly chilling.” Rouget pleaded guilty to possessing the weapon and cartridges, as well as to offences including theft of a motor vehicle, stealing petrol, assault and breaching a community corrections order. Police had discovered the shotgun and cartridges when they pulled over a stolen Mitsubishi Magna in Narre Warren in August last year.
The driver told police that his mother had bought the car from “an Indian male in Burwood”, police prosecutor Senior Constable Fiona Davis told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Monday. Rouget was in the passenger seat, under which the shotgun was discovered during a police search. When asked by police why he had the weapon and cartridges, Rouget said he was being “enthusiastic”. “I wanted to see what it was like.” The court was told that some of Rouget’s offending occurred five weeks into a 12-month community corrections order. The CCO had been handed down in December 2013 for two counts of unlawful assault, possessing prohibited weapons such as long arms, theft of a motor vehicle, driving while suspended and retention of stolen goods.
Rouget had not completed any community work or “any condition” of the order, the court was told. Defence lawyer Rachel Hopkins said Rouget had shown a willingness to engage in a rehabilitation program to overcome his ice addiction. “We’re not shying away from the compliance not being acceptable but positive steps have been undertaken.” Ms Hopkins said Rouget’s drug use became an obvious issue in late 2013 when he lost his business. The court was told that Rouget tried to assault Hampton Park service-station attendants with a screwdriver after they confronted him over a suspected petrol drive-off in June 2014. During the altercation, he drove a silver Ford Territory at one of the attendants, stopping one metre short. He also pleaded guilty to stealing petrol from a Scoresby servo in De-
cember, and failing to return a hired van in August. The van was found abandoned in Mount Waverley the following month. He was also charged with assault and breaching an intervention order protecting his estranged wife at a Hallam servo in January. Magistrate Schultz said it was a “tragic circumstance” that ice had destroyed Rouget’s life and his family relationships but was concerned by the combination of drugs and firearms. “When a man’s found with a sawn-off shotgun and two live cartridges in his underwear, you don’t have to be a Rhodes Scholar to join the dots.” He set a non-parole period of six months, including 84 days already spent remanded in custody. Rouget next appears on another matter at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 13 August.

Cr Crestani was the MC for the Reclaim Australia city rally on Saturday 18 July, which turned violent when anti-Islam and anti-racism groups attempted to clash across police lines. Addressing the rally, Cr Crestani said: “Freedom of religion does not mean we accept the fundamental ideas of Islam, which do not allow for other religions. So that is why Islam needs reforming or it needs to leave Australia”. South Eastern Metropolitan state Greens MP Nina Springle said Cr Crestani should be “condemned” for participating in the rally on behalf of Reclaim Australia. “Given the great contribution that generations of migrants have made to Australia, it is sad that Cr Crestani saw fit to participate in this way,” Ms Springle said. “Her participation must be condemned in the strongest terms.

A NARRE Warren teen has pleaded guilty to weapons charges over an alleged Anzac Day terror plot. Mehran Azami, 19, appeared in Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Monday and pleaded guilty to 19 counts of importing weapons and three other charges. He was remanded in custody to appear at the County Court on 22 October. The News reported in May that police charged Azami with importing more than 200 weapons - including AK-47 flick knives and tasers designed to look like iPhones following pre-dawn raids throughout Casey on 18 April. Following a tip-off from British police, a 200-strong joint state and federal police counter-terrorism team executed seven search warrants in Narre Warren, Hampton Park, Hallam and Eumemmerring as part of Operation Rising. Police alleged Azami was the weapons supplier for two other Casey teenagers charged following the raids - 18-year-olds Harun Causevic and Sevdet Ramadan Besim. Causevic, of Hampton Park, was refused bail at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on 8 May and detained along with Besim, of Hallam. They are due to return to court in August. Last week the News reported that a 15-year-old boy from Britain had pleaded guilty to one count of inciting another person to carry out an attack at a service in Australia. Authorities dropped a second charge of inciting terrorism overseas in relation to beheading a person in Australia. Police arrested the boy in April after intercepting encrypted conversation allegedly with an 18-year-old man in Australia. The boy, from Blackburn in north-west England, will be sentenced in September and cannot be named for legal reasons. Two other Narre Warren men, aged 18 and 19, were released without charge following the raids. Last month a 16-year-old girl from northern England was charged after she was implicated in the alleged terror plot. The girl from Manchester has been charged with collecting or making a record of information likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing for an act of terrorism, or possessing a document or record containing information of that kind. The UK teen’s trial is scheduled to begin on 17 August in Manchester.

Casey mayor Mick Morland last week said Cr Crestani’s views were not a reflection of council’s but noted it was her right to front the rally. “I was surprised that she was fronting the rally but Rosalie is a person of her own convictions, and I know she did not advertise that she was from Casey Council, she was there as an individual and everyone has that right,” Cr Morland said. “As an Australian, she has the right to speak her own mind and I applaud her for that, whether I agree with her views or not is a different thing. “She did not represent the City of Casey, she represented herself.”

By GEORGIA WESTGARTH TOORADIN’S famous fishy restaurant Wings and Fins took to the screen for the first episode of Channel Nine’s new culinary series, Hotplate on Tuesday 28 July. The seafood restaurant, located at the Tooradin airport, prides itself on its fresh Flinders Island crayfish. Now, head chef Lozz and owner Nola Delorenzo better known as Nols have also taken centre stage. Nols, a bank manager of 25 years turned restaurateur, has been dubbed ‘Australia’s fussiest eater’ but said filming the show was a ‘fantastic experience’. The exposure is already filling tables and leading to selfies with fans. “People were under the impression Wings and Fins had closed down, but even with the ads (for the TV show) we have gone from Saturday night bookings of 13 people to being booked out most weekends - but it hasn’t been all about the series, a lot of blood, sweat and tears over two and a half years has gone into it,” Nols said. After managing the Caldermeade Farm Cafe for more than four years, Nols bought the seafood restaurant and set about building its reputation once more. “When I took over, Wings and Fins needed a lot of money spent on it in the kitchen and on the cray tanks and I didn’t have much left to spend on fixing up the front of house - But now (post filming) we’re looking pretty swish,” she said. Labelled as a fussy, unadventurous eater, Nols stands by that brand and said she really did wish she had an airline sick bag at one meal. “We haven’t seen any episodes

Copper culprit on bail By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A CRANBOURNE man accused of looting a former library site while on bail for six commercial burglaries has been given another shot at bail. Mathew Leigh Horsfield, 34, applied for bail on Monday over fresh charges of burglary at the former Dandenong library site, where he allegedly stole 100 kilograms of copper tubing, a wheelie bin and two sets of keys. He was also charged with possession of ice, dangerous driving, driving without an interlock device, committing an indictable offence while on bail, and a suspected proceeds-of-crime charge. Police alleged Horsfield made full admissions to entering the Stuart Street library through a roof cavity on 21 July and removing copper tubing used for the
building’s fire service. About 7.30am workers at the library demolition site tried to block Horsfield’s rented van from driving out of a nearby car park. Dandenong Magistrates’ Court was told Horsfield tried to drive around the workers’ vehicle but crashed into it and caused “considerable damage” to both cars. Horsfield allegedly that day sold the copper tubing to unknown scrap metal dealers in Dandenong for $1100 cash though the accused admitted to selling it for “roughly $450”. Detectives searched the unemployed accused’s home that day, seizing $15,000 worth of suspected stolen goods including dishwashers, washing machines, cooktops, building supplies and a CFA jacket,
the court was told. They also seized $1100 cash - believed to be proceeds from selling the copper, a small amount of methamphetamine as well as the keys and wheelie bin. Horsfield allegedly told police he couldn’t remember where most of the seized items came from. He said they were probably bought by him off the Gumtree online trading site, though he had no such receipts, he said. At the time Horsfield was on bail with a night curfew for six commercial burglaries and thefts, ice possession, drink-driving while driving without an interlock, and failing to appear on bail. Police alleged Horsfield’s ice addiction was costing him about $200 a day. Magistrate Barry Schultz said the bail application was line-ball, weighing up
Horsfield’s ice-fuelled re-offending with available treatment on a CREDIT bail program. He said Horsfield’s driving offences were a significant public safety issue, and had committed a serious burglary two months after being granted bail. “In my view he has shown a degree of contempt for a previous granting of bail.” Mr Schultz also took into account that Horsfield was likely facing a short jail term with a community corrections order. He placed Horsfield on bail with a night curfew, thrice-weekly reporting to police, and a ban on driving and on druguse. “If you come back (to court) you will not get bail a second time around.” Horsfield next appears at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 24 August.

A CRANBOURNE North student has designed herself a bright career. Phalhong Mao last week won the Best Response to a Design Brief award at the Building Designers Association of Victoria (BDAV) Building Design Awards. TAFEs delivering the Advanced Diploma of Building Design (Architectural) nominated one outstanding student from each class to present a detailed project submission to a BDAV judging panel. “I did actually feel really excited and surprised to win this award,” Phalhong said. “I never expected that I
could attend a competition like this. “This is because of my background as an international student from Cambodia. “I remember when I first arrived here about two and half years ago I was struggling to adapt with everything like geography, weather, culture, and the education itself. “The language - the technical terminologies - used and the study environment are very different to my country.” But she successfully designed additions to a commercial building in Smith Street, Collingwood. Phalhong had to work with strict requirements and com-
plex restrictions and her pitch won her the award. She’s just started her second semester of her second year of a Bachelor of Architectural Design at RMIT. She used the RMIT TAFE Advanced Diploma of Building Design (Architectural) course as a pathway to the degree. In the next five years Phalhong will study and work towards sitting exams to become a fully registered architect. “Design is everything and I have always enjoyed doing it since I was young,” she said. “I’ve tended to dream about designing my own dream house throughout the years that I have grown up.
“I think, I feel and I engage to every moment within every space in my imagination. “Therefore, users’ experiences of a space within a building are always the heart of my design.” Phalhong has also started to incorporate environmental sustainable design (ESD) into her building designs to minimise energy usage and costs during the building’s lifespan. “Because I am from one of a developing country in Southeast Asia, I’ve actually always wanted to help design shelters inclusive of ESD design aspects for the homeless people, or the people who value this concept back home in my country,” she said.
Alarming thieves POLICE are appealing for public assistance after two men wearing hoodies and caps used an implement to force open a roller door at the Hallam Shell Express Service Station. The men broke into the Princes Highway petrol station around 4am on Tuesday 21 July and went straight for the cigarette counter before fleeing after the alarm was activated. CCTV pictures revealed the two offenders drove away in a Holden sedan and station wagon.

Growing great Boeing gardens BERWICK Fields Primary was buzzing with activity this week. More than 25 volunteers from Boeing Aerostructures Australia and the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden (SAKG) Foundation joined students and staff for a working bee in the school’s garden. The teams worked to refresh the vegetable planter boxes and prune the fruit trees that supply the school’s kitchen. “The program is a fantastic way to introduce our over 1100 students to fresh
produce, teach them how it is grown and how to cook healthy, natural meals from an early age,” Berwick Fields Primary School program co-ordinator Donna Egglestone said. “It was fantastic for our staff and students to interact with Boeing employees, and we were able to achieve significant progress in further developing the garden.” Boeing Aerostructures Australia managing director Mike Dickinson said his company had been “humbled” by the
way the Berwick Fields students took to the activities. “We were really humbled by the way the school embraced our employees during the day, and it was rewarding for our Boeing team to support the community where we live and work,” he said. Boeing Australia has been a partner of the Kitchen Garden Program since 2011, providing funding to support resource development as well as staff volunteers.

Warning on training By CASEY NEILL FAKE job ads and dodgy doorknockers are swindling up to $30,000 each from south-east students. Some have racked up the debt without even attending a class, warned South East Local Learning and Employment Network (SELLEN) CEO Andrew Simmons. “I’ve had conversations with at least a dozen, but I’d imagine the numbers would be higher,” he said. Mr Simmons said some registered training organisations (RTOs) were signing up unwitting students to get their hands on Federal Government funding. “There are some really good RTOs out there and we don’t want to tarnish everyone with the same brush,” he said. “But we’ve got RTOs or brokers who are literally doorknocking. “They’re promising laptops or tablets or gift cards as incentives for people to enrol. “We’ve got kids who are being sold courses and racking up huge financial debt through the Federal Government without even attending a class.” He said some RTOs were advertising job positions that didn’t exist. When applicants arrive they’re told they don’t have the qualification and are encouraged to sign up to complete the required training.
Andrew Simmons. “Training seekers need to be really aware of what they’re signing into and the consequences,” Mr Simmons said. “If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.” He said some swindled students were subsequently missing out on proper training because they couldn’t access any more government funding and couldn’t pay up-front. He urged training seekers to ask RTOs where their graduates worked before signing up. “If it’s an early learning centre, call and ask what they think of the RTO,” he said.
By CASEY NEILL YOUNG entrepreneurs can jump into a Berwick Shark Tank to pitch their best ideas. Casey Cardinia Region has invited 15 to 21-year-olds to share an idea that could change the world. Four successful applicants will take part in a shark tank-style event at the Tech-Innovation and Entrepreneurship Expo on Saturday 15 August. They’ll face local entrepreneurs who are eager to help them reach their goals and will receive publicity and mentoring from event sponsors. Simon Maselli from Pakenham business MetamorphCG helped to organise the contest. “Earlier this year we put together an ‘engaging local business’ event,” he said. “What we’ve all recognised is the business community, particularly in this region, isn’t as well engaged as say, a metropolitan region. “We got together four entrepreneurs from the region and they just got up and told their story. “The thing that we really wanted them to get across was that being an entrepreneur is tough and you can’t really do it on your own.
Mr Simmons said SELLEN surveyed school leavers for the State Government’s Track Connect project and received several reports about scams. He said they lodged complaints with the Victorian Registration and Qualifications Authority (VRQA) and Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) and investigations were ongoing. Mr Simmons said the Review of Quality Assurance in Victoria’s Vocational Education and Training (VET) System released on 29 June also identified issues in the training sector. The State Government pledged to implement the report’s 19 recommendations and announced a $9 million blitz on lowquality training providers. Training and Skills Minister Steve Herbert this was “a crucial first-step in ensuring Victoria’s training system is the best it can be by removing providers that provide poor or fraudulent outcomes which do not meet industry standards”. SELLEN is a community-managed network of south-east organisations interested in working to give 10 to 19-yearolds a better go at successfully moving through the education system to employment. It has about 250 members including schools, TAFEs, businesses, youth welfare agencies and individuals.
“Here in Australia we seem to be competing against each other rather than collaborating. “Instead of making the entire pie bigger, we’re more worried about our little slice of the pie.” Mr Maselli said about 20 people attended the event and organisers approached Casey Cardinia Region about running another one. The region suggested combining it with an expo during Casey Cardinia Business Week. “Through those discussions Shark Tank idea came up,” Mr Maselli said. “We really think that’s going to cap off a fantastic event.” Entrepreneurs need to submit a written application and have the option of adding a three to five minute video of their idea. ON ITS first trip down-under Cirque Africa will land in Lyndhurst this month. Having toured the globe for eight years and performed in Hollywood and for Dolly Parton in France, the new show will tour Australia and New Zealand for the next two years. He’s one Young All Australian By JARROD POTTER NOT even a mid-carnival injury could stop Alex Young earning a pair of amazing accolades at the School Sport Australia under-15 football championships. Young, 15, from Pakenham, proved pivotal in School Sport Victoria’s (SSV) triumph at the championships – defeating Western Australia by 65 points in the grand final – and his efforts streaming down the wing also earned him an All Australian selection. Trading his Beaconsfield jumper for the week, Young was stunned to pick up an All Australian nod considering he missed a crucial match – the preliminary final against Queensland which Victoria only just managed to win. “I don’t even know – I couldn’t even believe I got this as I missed one game because I got injured, and I thought that would’ve been it,” Young said. “I did it in the South Australia game – knee on knee – played through that and then missed the prelim against Queensland and lucky we won that. “But when they (All Australian selectors) said my

name, I couldn’t get up quick enough.” The SSV under-15s had to bounce back from a gutwrenching two-point loss to Western Australia earlier in the carnival and Young believes that inspired the side to fight even harder when facing the Swans again in the last match of the week. “We lost to them on the Monday by two points after the siren, but we were hoping it was a better result the second time and it was,” Young said.
“I reckon everyone just played like they could and didn’t let the pressure get to us like it did when we played the first time. “Bonding went well with all of them (Victorian team mates) – there wasn’t one player who was excluded, everyone got together real quick and everyone was happy – except for that night we lost to WA – but other than that everyone was confident we were sure we weren’t going to let it happen again.” From there the juggernaut
that is Victorian schoolboys’ football took the carnival by the horns to book a rematch in the grand final, where Young drilled two goals to cap off his carnival. “My favourite moment was in the final when I kicked my second goal – the kick was in the air and went up for a pack mark… the ball went over the pack and rolled on… I ran into an open goal and kicked it,” he said. It’s not just a token team of the carnival, the players will get to take their football skills to South Africa next year as part of the School Sport Australia team. “In January next year we go to South Africa – there for two weeks and play in Cape Town and do some community service with a mini Auskick and go on tours in the country,” Young said. “It’s pretty exciting, especially with the other kids you do it with – they’re living in the moment as well and to share the opportunity with the boys – especially the other boys I played Vic footy with – is great.” For now it’s a return to club footy as the All Australian returns to the Eagles ahead of a likely South East Juniors finals campaign.
Silverbacks on song By RUSSELL BENNETT THE Pakenham Silverbacks got the perfect tune-up on Saturday for the Gridiron Victoria Division 2 playoffs, picking up a hard-fought 14-8 win in their final regular season game against the Gippsland Gladiators in Bendigo. With the Silverbacks heading into the game without injured star quarterback Steven Mclean, Aaron Verbakel was handed the duty of controlling the offence. Pakenham’s defence was solid early but an ill disciplined, lacklustre first half saw the Gladiators take a 6-0 lead into the long break with a Chevy Edwards pick being one of the few highlights for the Silverbacks. But the boys from Pakenham came back out after half-time with a renewed sense of being and some real fire in their bellies – hitting back both on the field and on the scoreboard. The Silverbacks’ defence produced some hard hits but the flags flew, slowing down the progress it had made. Adam Kolinski powered his way to yet another touchdown, continuing his dominant season and a Verbakel QB keep on the point after saw the Silverbacks take the lead 8-6. The defence kept piling on the pressure with Jack Lonie and Mutini Nhiliziyo really doing some damage. With great field position on the back of good, pressure defence and some great running from Kolinski, Jason Howlett and Paul Ballinger, Verbakel faked the hand off and ran the ball beautifully for the second touchdown for the Silverbacks.

The Silverbacks finished their sophomore regular season with a 6-4 record - good for fourth in Division 2, behind the Northern Raiders on just head-to-head points differential. SET to take her talents internationally, Pakenham basketball phenomena Jaz Shelley has earned the first of what will definitely be many Australian jerseys. Squaring off against FIBA Under-17 Oceania Championships next month, Shelley, 15, has booked her place in the roster and given herself the best possible chance of playing for Australia at the FIBA Under-17 World Championships next year. Featuring in Australia’s best under17-year-old talent would be outstanding enough if she was in the top age bracket, but Shelley has two years left in this age group to impress even further as her progression up the Basketball Australia ranks continues. She’ll face off against the likes of New Zealand, New Caledonia and Tahiti en route to helping Australia qualify for the world championships in April next year. The rising-star guard has kept busy this season, playing for Southern Peninsula’s BIG V State Championship women’s team as well as representing Vic Country at the recently held under-16 national championships along with attending Basketball Australia development camps at the Australian Institute of Sport. Shelley’s New Zealand basketball journey begins on 14 August.

Tough run ahead By DAVID NAGEL PAKENHAM will have to make the South East Football Netball League finals series the hard way after going down to Doveton by 34 points at Toomuc Reserve on Saturday. Doveton, on 36 points, has a tough run in, with games against fourth-placed Narre Warren, ladder-leader Berwick and second-placed Cranbourne, but does have the luxury of a bye, where four premiership points are guaranteed. It means the Lions, on 32 points, will need to win two of their last four games, against third-placed Beaconsfield, Berwick, eighthplaced Tooradin and seventh-placed ROC, to draw level with the Doves and hopefully scrape through on percentage.
The Lions led at the first three changes but the Doves kicked 6.6 to 0.2 in the final term to give them their second win over the Lions this season. The consistent Cory Lenders was once again Pakenham’s best, while Andrew Humphries and Shannon Henwood were terrific for the Doves. A mesmerising 20-minute burst from Berwick halfforward Tim Gunn led the Wickers to a 34-point victory over Beaconsfield at Edwin Flack Reserve. Saturday’s Battle of the Creek looked like going down to the wire at half time, the Wickers leading by a kick - 4.5 to 3.5 - a margin that was wiped away with an early third-quarter goal to Beaconsfield’s Troy McDermott.
But Gunn went bang, with goals at the 7, 11, 13, 19 and 25 minute marks, before trumping them all with a left-foot snap that pierced the middle as the three-quarter time siren sounded. “I’ve seen on-ballers have quarters like that, but for a half-forward flanker to come out and play that sort of quarter, that’s the best I’ve seen at local level,” Berwick coach Rhys Nisbet said. Gunn finished the day with seven, while Jimmy Phillips, who battled manfully against Meyer, was joined by Lucas Jellyman-Turner, Tom Brennan and Ash Smith on the Wickers’ best players list. Jordan Stewart was sensational for the Eagles, keeping Berwick danger-man Mitch Johnson goalless for the afternoon.
Narre Warren full-forward Kerem Baskaya kicked his biggest bag for the season, a nine-goal haul that led the Magpies to a rampaging 127-point victory over Tooradin at Westernport Oval. Jackson Parker and George Angelopoulos kicked three each for the Magpies, who need to win their last four games to grab hold of a double chance. It might all come down to their last game of the season against Beaconsfield. And finally, Cranbourne champion Marc Holt kicked six goals in the Eagles’ 81-point dismantling of ROC at Starling Road. Beacy’s got the goods - have no doubts By DAVID NAGEL BEACONSFIELD is good enough to play in this year’s grand final according to coach Amy Heath, who was impressed with her side’s 4337 victory over Berwick at Edwin Flack Reserve. And don’t for one minute think that she’s just shooting from the hip, because Amy has some real substance to her argument. “I don’t like excuses but we have been injury stricken this year, hence our form hasn’t been great,” Amy said of her team, which broke a three-game losing streak on the weekend. “But we’re building and we’ll have a full team on the court by the time finals come around. Narre (Warren) looks to be the team to beat but a grand final spot is what we’re playing for, and who knows what can happen from there.” Beacy took control of the contest against Berwick in the second quarter, with Andi Dickson and Bianca Sanzaro combining beautifully in a 15-goal-to-eight onslaught. The Eagles then maintained their composure, and their lead, to bank a crucial four points. Kylie Baker in wing defence was also terrific for the Eagles on Saturday, while Olivia Macente and Jodie Cranston had good games for Berwick. Cranbourne coach Simon O’Shanassy was very proud of his side after its come-from-behind eight-goal victory 42-34 over ROC at Starling Road. The Eagles went in without Amy-Grace Paulsen, and lost fellow goal-shooter Monalisa Groom to injury in the second quarter, but still found a way to grab the four points.

The Eagles were down at half time, but the move of regular wing-attack Natalie Sparks into the goal ring made all the difference after the break. “We still had Jess (O’Hanlon) in there, but for Nat to come in and shoot 11 goals in the third quarter was huge for us,” O’Shanassy said. sured itself of a double-chance in September after a gritty and determined three-goal victory 45-42 over Doveton at Toomuc Reserve. Two of the league’s most potent goal-shooters, Pakenham’s Rachel Priestly and Doveton’s Rahni Samason, settled down into a shootout in the first quarter, their skills admirable in the windy conditions. But ironically it was Pakenham’s defence that made the difference in the end, with Michelle Briggs, Olivia Hunt and Taylor Beck keeping
the Doves to their lowest score since round seven. Premiership-favourite Narre Warren has continued its unbeaten run this season with a comprehensive 39-goal victory over Tooradin at Westernport. The Magpies are really looking strong at the moment; Tayla Shannon (88 percent) and Chloe Phillips (85 percent) shot the ball beautifully while Tracey Dell and Kara Hargreaves were impenetrable down back. Global Civic hits refresh By ALISTAIR KENNEDY HONDA Civic has a long and distinguished history in Australia. It has been on sale here continuously since 1973 and has grown from a tiny two-door 1.2-litre sedan which revolutionised the design of small cars in Australia through nine generations into one of the classiest and most respected small-medium cars on our local market. A truly global vehicle, the Civic hatch is manufactured in Britain and was developed with extensive testing throughout Europe. Its sedan sibling is built in Thailand. That ninth generation Civic has been on sale here since February 2012 and had its refresh button tapped earlier this year with some minor design tweaks, new safety technology and infotainment improvements. Already a good looking car, the 2015 changes have made the Civic even more eye-catching. There’s a new front grille with cross-hatch fill, new front and rear bumpers, side mouldings and rear spoiler together with new standard guided tube daytime running lights and guided tube tail lights. As before the rear door handles are of the concealed variety further enhancing the car’s couple-like appearance
The 2015 Honda Civic hatch comes in three equipment levels – VTi-S, VTi-L and VTi-LN with RRP ranging from $22,150 for a manual VTi-S to $31,090 for the automatic VTi-LN. Interior space in the Civic hatchback is fine for four adults, with space in the centre-rear for another without too much discomfort. Despite the sleek appearance headroom is fine. Soft-touch surface materials are used throughout to provide a quality feel, the steering wheel has tilt and telescopic adjustment and, in the VTiL, is finished in extra-smooth leather with stitching. We liked the complex double-decker styling of the dash and instrument area, with the digital speedo sitting high to make it easy to keep track of. The boot is large and deep, the latter helped by the use of a space-saver spare beneath the floor. Capacity is 390 litres, extending to 1120 litres with the rear seatback folded and loaded to the window line. Luggage is reasonably easy to load through an opening that’s wide and practical. Civic VTi-S is available with either a six-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission, while the VTi-L and VTi-N are five-speed auto only. New for the 2015 Civic hatch is an
New grille design further enhances the Honda Civic hatch. enhanced safety technology called Agile Handling Assist System (AHAS) that combines with the car’s stability control system to improve stability and performance during cornering. Front and rear parking sensors are now standard in the Civic VTi-L and VTi-LN models, but are an option in the VTi-S. Other standard features include seven airbags, ABS brakes with brake assist and electronic brakeforce distribution, vehicle stability assist with traction control, low tyre pressure warning system, and Honda G-force Control (G-Con) technology which re-
duces the of G-forces on occupants in the event of collision. As before our only serious gripe is the restricted rear vision caused by the positioning of the small rear spoiler across the window. There is a positive side, though, in that the brake lights are positioned on either side and below the spoiler making them highly visible to following vehicles. New for 2015 is Display Audio System which combines Bluetooth connectivity, audio streaming, mirroring functionality and display of the reversing camera and sat nav (only in the
VTi-LN). Disappointingly, the volume controls on the screen are tiny up-anddown buttons rather than the normal circular knob, a feature that is not only inconvenient but potentially dangerous because of the distraction needed to make adjustments. Fortunately there are steering wheels mounted controls. Handling in the Civic hatch is quite sharp and it turns in neatly and positively. Steering is direct and well weighted, offering good road feedback. Ride comfort is good as Honda has increased suspension travel and worked on recalibrating bushing compliance so they are more suited to rough and ready Australian country roads. Fuel consumption during our test period was 7.1 litres per 100 km in Econ mode, within the ballpark of the listed 6.5 L/100 km. Honda Civic hatch is a stylish, well-built and highly reputable smallto-medium car with an excellent ninegeneration heritage. It’s grown sufficiently over the years to the stage where it can be used as a family car by those downsizing from a traditional large family car.
