Safe house By ERIN SOMERVILLE OVER 200 local victims of domestic violence were contacted by staff from Betty’s Place in the first six months of this year. This figure is from police referrals alone. About a further 60 victims have knocked on the door of Betty’s Place in their darkest hour in need of crisis accommodation and support. Often, these women come with families. In four of the cases, it’s been male partners in need of help to escape from domestic violence. It is a scourge that has left the team at Betty’s Place struggling to keep up with demand for its services. The program is funded through YES Youth and Family Services and provides safe, supportive accommodation for women and children escaping domestic violence, as well as supportive and referral services. Some stay for a night. Others have stayed up to eight or nine months. But despite the campaigns and awareness beginning to emerge over domestic violence, the door of Betty’s Place is being knocked on more than ever before. With only four units currently available to shelter women and families escaping violence, the service often has to turn people away and instead find them alternative safe accommodation options with friends, family, or in hotels or caravans. The hundreds of women who Betty’s Place work with come from all walks of life. They can be as young as 17, have a family, or even have just found the courage to leave a 50-year-old relationship. “It affects absolutely everyone,” YES Youth and Family Services Program manager of the adults and
Alexandra Paras and Cassie Sandow stand in a room at Betty’s Place that they hope will be converted into a unit for crisis support. 141846 Picture: ERIN SOMERVILLE family team Cassie Sandow said. “There is not enough funding. “We can always do with more money and always do with more resources.” The dream at Betty’s Place now is to have the complex restructured to double the number of units available
and provide more crisis accommodation for more victims. It’s a simple goal yet one that requires a lot of red tape and funds. The Border Association of House Medical Officers is hosting a fundraiser ball to help Betty’s Place achieve some of those goals.
“Doctors see a lot of patients in hospital as a result of domestic violence, it’s in their face and something they see so often,” said Alexandra Paras, who is working with BAHMO to raise funds. “It’s about wanting to get to the root of the problem, it’s all well and good to see a patient who has suffered from
domestic violence, but at the end of the day it’s a band-aid solution.” The fund-raising ball will be held on Saturday 25 July, at the Albury Entertainment Centre. For information on a great night out for a good cause visit https://bettysball2015.yapsody.com/

Mates’ friendly dig By ERIN SOMERVILLE FRIENDSHIP between neighbours is expected to blossom among the food and flowers in Albury’s new Bungam Community Garden. The gardens that opened on Sunday is a new initiative by the council to promote local community spaces after public feedback supported the concept. Eight garden beds will be nurtured by nearby residents such as Frank Dunk and Peter Atkins, who have grand plans to turn the empty space into something extraordinary. Rhubarb, herbs and garlic heads,

asparagus, and a passionfruit vine along the fence are just some of the ideas on the menu for this new community space. Mr Atkins is delighted to be part of the initiative in his local neighbourhood. “We’ve been living in this street for many, many years, it’s great this block is being transformed,” he said. “The other good thing is you get to meet your neighbours and do it in a way you can share something with them.” Mr Dunk feels the community garden will also help settle the rival-

If they want to meet again,
then I am more than happy to do that.” Rainbow Walk co-convener Sebastien France said the event was an opportunity for supporters of gay marriage in the local community unsure of how to demonstrate to have their voice heard. “We want people to show up and
show their support.” The Rainbow Walk for Marriage Equality will be held on 25 July, starting at 10.30am, at Cathy McGowan’s office in Wodonga, before leaving from St Ives on Lincoln Causeway for Sussan Ley’s Kiewa Street office, at 11.30am.
Flu was here... more to come By ERIN SOMERVILLE LOCAL health services are preparing for a sharp spike in cases of influenza as the country battles one of its worst flu seasons in years. A total of 16 diagnosed cases were reported by the Murrumbidgee Local Health District last week, compared to just six the week before. Health workers are expecting this number to continue to increase in the following weeks. “We are starting to see it start this week now,” Director of Public Health at MLHD Tracey Oakman said. “The prediction of the Ministry of Health is while we have seen cases earlier in the year from overseas travellers, now we are going to see a significant rise. “We have more cases this year to date.”
The Ministry of Health has warned the number of flu cases in Australia is up by over 50 per cent in 2015 as compared to the same time last year, and while the trend is similar in the local health district, Ms Oakman said it isn’t reason for panic. “It is such small numbers it really isn’t significant.” July to September is a common period for influenza, with figures already well up on June’s eight diagnosed cases in the MLHD. A typical case of influenza can leave a healthy person unwell for five to seven days, however complications can arise in patients with underlying medical conditions. Symptoms typically include fever, congestion, lethargy, and aches and pains. Influenza is responsible for about 2800 deaths in Australian each year.

A WODONGA woman suffered injuries after her vehicle crashed head-on with a school bus on Friday afternoon. The crash that occurred near Dederang at 3pm left the Wodonga woman pinned in her car for over an hour. Police closed sections of the Kiewa Valley Highway between Speers Lane and Dederang Road as emergency services worked to free the trapped driver before she was taken to Albury Base Hospital for treatment. Police are continuing their investigation into the crash, and were unable to confirm reports the bus had been travelling on the wrong side of the road. The bus driver from Werribee has been interviewed by police. The investigation is continuing.

FEDERAL Farrer MP Sussan Ley has been identified by Hume Phoenix as the main target for the marriage equality message being pushed at this weekend’s Rainbow Walk. The walk organised by Hume Phoenix will cross the Lincoln Causeway to Ms Ley’s Kiewa Street office in an attempt to gain the Liberal member’s support for marriage equality. Ms Ley confirmed in early July that she had not yet decided whether she would support the potential Bill for marriage equality and called for Liberal MPs to be allowed a conscience vote on the matter. It will be the first cross-Border event in support of the local LGBTI community’s fight for marriage equality and will co-incide with similar rallies across Australia. The Rainbow Walk comes a month after the US Supreme Court determined that bans on same-sex marriage were unconstitutional, leaving Australia as the only developed English-speaking country that hasn’t legalised gay marriage. Following this year’s marriage equality moves from traditionally-conservative Ireland and USA, Hume Phoenix is primed to get their message out loud and clear. “It is a bit embarrassing because we are lagging,” Rainbow Walk co-convener Toni Johnson said. “We want to show big support in Albury Wodonga for the LGBTI community because Sussan (Ley) believes no-one supports us. “Everyone has the right to equality.” Ms Ley responded to the claims from Hume Phoenix. “Unfortunately I won’t be about on the weekend but I’m sure the walk will be supported and I wish them well,” she said.

Book captures qualities of a hero By ERIN SOMERVILLE THE legacy of Albury’s Victoria Cross recipient Lieutenant Albert Borella has been immortalised in a book written by his cousin Bradley A. Chalmers. The book, fittingly launched in front of the bronze statue of Lt Borella on Borella Road on Friday, comes on the 97th anniversary of his act of bravery at Villers-Bretonneux which earned him the Victoria Cross. Growing up on the same land near Wedderburn where Lt Borella was born and bred, Mr Chalmers always felt close to his war-hero relative. “We grew up with the stories that had been handed down through the family, and the photographs,” Mr Chalmers said. It wasn’t until 2001 when Mr Chalmers was asked by the Wedderburn RSL to talk about Lt Borella on Anzac Day that the idea of putting his amazing story into a book formed. “Once I started research I started to realise what a remarkable life he had.” Mr Chalmers even ventured to Europe and the Middle East in 1981 to retrace the footsteps of Lt Borella and gain a better understanding of his journey and experiences. It was this year’s 100th anniversary of the Anzac commemmoration, however, that pushed Mr Chalmers to complete the book. He stumbled across many delightful anecdotes through friends and family of Lt Borella while putting the

THERE are only two days remaining to nominate local volunteers for recognition at the 2015 Volunteer of the Year awards. The annual NSW Volunteer of the Year Awards recognise the enormous contribution individual volunteers, volunteer teams, corporate volunteers and volunteer managers make to people’s lives. Presented by The Centre for Volunteering, the awards are supported by principal partners ClubsNSW, the industry body representing the state’s 1400 not-for-profit clubs, the NSW Government and BUPA Aged Care. “Every single volunteer nominated is invited to the awards ceremony on at the Albury Club in September and presented with a certificate to thank them for their work,” Ms Rygate said. “We want every volunteer to be recognised - from those in school reading groups, to sporting clubs and community organisations - so please nominate your local volunteers. “These awards are not about how often a person volunteers or acts of heroism; they’re about recognising ordinary people who give their time, because every contribution counts.” The region was strongly represented last year, with the overall 2014 Murray Volunteer of the Year Award going to Janice Awburn of Lavington for her work at the Albury Junior Football Club. Janice runs the club’s key fund-raiser - its successful canteen - allowing the club to keep its football fees down so more kids can play sport, crucial for health and wellbeing. There are eight award categories: Student Volunteer of the Year. Volunteer Team of the Year. Youth Volunteer of the Year. Excellence in Volunteer Management. Adult Volunteer of the Year. Corporate Volunteer of the Year (individual). Senior Volunteer of the Year. Corporate Volunteer Team of the Year. To nominate to www.volunteering.com.au Nominations close Friday 24 July.

Carp’s fertile future By ERIN SOMERVILLE WHEN it comes to catching carp, the fishermen’s trash is a local business’s treasure. The team at Baranduda-based fertiliser company NutriSoil are keeping the pesky fish species out of landfill and using it to fuel their composts to create a bio-organic product. The company can use up to a tonne of carp on its composts, proving to be both good for business and the environment. “Whole fish are terrific,” NutriSoil managing director Rachelle Armstrong said. “It’s good for the worms and microbes, and stimulates breakdowns.” The business has developed over the decades from a small Yackandandah project using tuna waste imported from interstate to now distributing Australia-wide. With the help of the Wangaratta Sustainability Network, NutriSoil has been able to access tens to tonnes of carp for their business. The team is now eager to further harness the benefits of carp sourced locally to continue making their business locally sustainable and environmentally-friendly. “We could definitely take more of the carp if it was available.” NutriSoil will be joining some of Australia’s leading fish researchers and stakeholders in Wodonoga on Tuesday at the North East Catchment Management Authority’s (CMA) 2015 North East Victorian Carp Conference at La Trobe University. “Carp are a problem in local waterways because their feeding technique muddies the water, making it difficult for native fish species to breed and survive,” said Lachlan Campbell from the North East CMA. “We’re bringing some of Australia’s leading carp researchers and practitioners to our region because we want to support local people who are motivated to control these ‘underwater rabbits’.” Speakers at the 2015 North East Victorian Carp Conference will offer updates about carp population modelling, discuss the impacts of

FOR Albury cyclist Timmy Guy, getting back on the bike wasn’t so simple. After spending years working towards his dream of becoming a cyclist, paralysing anxiety saw his career goals come to a screeching halt. “I would roll out the door and spend the next three hours mustering with each second only the guts for the next pedal stroke,” he said. “On some days the darkness would be so consuming that I’d pull over to the side of the road every 10 minutes just wanting to cry but with no ability for tears, grabbing my helmet and wanting to shake the messiness out of my head. “The real problem was that the feeling didn’t stop when I got home and off the bike, but rather consumed my every waking moment.” Hanging up his helmet and lycra, the young cyclist put his depression down to his cycling pressures and looked for alternative paths to help him escape the black dog. It would be some time before Mr Guy through the help of specialists would gain a better understanding of the mental health issues that so commonly plague young adults. Two years ago, Mr Guy

Expo tackles loss and grief By ERIN SOMERVILLE
Petrol prices on the Border are among the worst in Victoria and New South Wales. 141873 Picture: ERIN SOMERVILLE
Pump prices at a premium BORDER motorists are being ripped off at the petrol pumps, according to latest figures from the RACV and NRMA. Prices for unleaded fuel in Wodonga have this week hovered around 148.9 cents per litre, making it the second most expensive region in Victoria to fill up behind Sale’s 149.4 cents per litre. The price is also a whopping 21 cents more than what Melburnians are paying in average at the pump. RACV Vehicle Engineering manager Michael Case said last week the higher price for unleaded fuel in Wodonga was completely unjustified considering a steady a fall in the wholesale price of fuel. “It’s grossly unfair that Wodonga residents are being forced to pay a premium price for fuel for no apparent reason,” he said.
“Petrol companies must stop ripping off drivers in Wodonga and deliver the lower prices being experienced elsewhere in country Victoria.” Meanwhile, Albury last week was the fourth most expensive town or city to fill up on fuel in NSW. The NRMA reported on Thursday that the average price of unleaded sat at 149.9 cents per litre in Albury, only topped by petrol prices in Mudgee, Parkes, and Tumut. The average petrol prices around Sydney hovered at 140.2 cents per litre. RACV has advised regional motorists to take advantage of cheaper prices when travelling and fill up when they see a lower price. Motorists can monitor fuel prices using the RACV website at www.racv.com.au or visit www. mynrma.com.au
GRIEF comes in many shapes and forms. Whether triggered by the loss of a loved one, dealing with a terminal diagnosis, or the breakdown of a relationship, it can be a tricky and complex emotion to face. Loss and grief counsellors Michelle Enright and Marjory Lum have worked with all forms of grief throughout their career and have seen how it can leave people feeling helpless and lost. “Families and patients need to be made aware that everyone grieves differently,” Ms Lum said. “Everything is OK in grieving, there is no wrong or right way.” Mercy Health Albury’s Loss and Grief Support Team will be hosting a ‘Grief Awareness Expo’ to help equip the local community and professionals to successfully navigate the difficulties associated with losing someone they love. Entitled ‘Hope after Loss - Acknowledging Loss and Promoting Resilience’, it will provide advice, practical support and a safe environment for anyone currently struggling with grief or interested in finding out more about the topic. Disenfranchised grief, such as mourning for broken families, loved ones with mental health issues, and impacts of drug use, will also be recognised in the expo. Ms Lum said the community deals with grief very differently to in the past, when people were expected to move on. “It’s about surviving, and after surviving a loss they grieve,” Ms Lum said. “It’s about learning it live with it, not
Loss and grief counsellors Michelle Enright and Marjory Lum say there is Picture: ERIN SOMERVILLE no right or wrong way to grieve. 142024 move on from it.” Guest speakers will include experts in loss and grief counselling Dr Penny Egan-Vine and Mr Garrett O’Dowd. Dr Egan-Vine is synonymous with addressing issues of loss and grief in the Albury district, and will focus on grief and children. Mr O’Dowd will draw on his years of expertise as a co-ordinator/counsellor at Mercy Grief Services in Melbourne to discuss strategies surrounding ‘Adult Grief and Hope after Loss’.
The expo will also present personal stories from people who have experienced a significant loss and displays from local support services about what help is available. Registration for the expo commences at 9am for a 9.20am start on Friday 28 August, at Albury Commercial Club. Entry is by gold coin donation, with morning tea supplied. For more information or to register, please call Marjory or Michelle at Mercy Health Albury on (02) 6042 1459.

ANT-MAN PG Director: Peyton Reed Starring: Paul Rudd, Michael Douglas, Evangeline Lilly Running Time: 117 Min ANT-MAN rivals Ironman and Starlord in terms of sass as the Marvel Cinematic Universe finally brings a founding member of The Avengers comic universe to the big screen. Paul Rudd brings just the right touch of humour and sass to the role of Scott Lang a master thief who ends up embracing his inner-hero to help Dr Hank Pym (Michael Douglas at his best) - the original Ant-Man to protect his secret. Pym trains Lang to use the AntMan suit which allows him to shrink in size, possess superhuman strength and control an army of ants. The miniature hero must use his new skills to prevent Cross (who forced Pym out of his company) - and played by Corey Stoll - from perfecting the same technology and using it as a weapon for evil. Throw in Evangeline Lilly (swapping one huge franchise Lord of the Rings - for another

in Marvel) as Pym’s daughter and Ant-Man’s love interest and you have a pretty impressive core cast. This movie is funny and surprisingly cool, because let’s face it the concept is silly on paper but somehow it works. Being honest the movie has quite a small scale (excuse the pun) to it compared to Ultron and Guardians of the Galaxy while these movies were set on a grand scale with lots of people in danger, this is a much more personal story. Pretty much the story of the original Ant-Man, his daughter and the guy he has
to train, however there are plenty of references to the rest of the Marvel Universe and even a cameo by one of the other superheroes. This is another instalment from the Marvel Universe aimed at taking a slightly lame, lesser-known, super hero and making him cool - and it works. Ant-Man is cool and the movie is well-worth seeing, in fact it was even more fun than Guardians of the Galaxy which was, up to this point, the best of the Marvel movies. - Inari Phillips - aged 15

IT is time for the NSW Government to stop discussing stamp duty and take clear action, according to the Real Estate Institute of New South Wales. REINSW president Malcolm Gunning said REINSW had been highlighting the inefficiencies of stamp duty for too long without action from the State Government. “Stamp duty clearly distorts prices and adversely effects property transactions,” Mr Gunning said. “We have to stop the talk and start to see action. The
State has got to put its own self-interest aside for the benefit of the broader economy. “While we are calling for an abolition of stamp duty, a first step, as a revenue neutral initiative, is to address the stamp duty brackets which have not been adjusted for 30 years. “This will have no impact on the State because there is clear evidence that a reduction in stamp duty rates will generate additional sales. “We recognise that ultimately if stamp duty is going to be abolished an increase in

GST will be necessary, which will take involvement from the Federal Government. “However, it is time for the NSW Government to stop hiding behind the Commonwealth and start making real decisions for the future of our great state. “Something can and should be done now. The message is clear and simple, review outdated stamp duty brackets and the additional market activity will have a positive flowon effect for the entire NSW economy,” Mr Gunning said.

Weekly Real Estate An oasis of peace with room to relax Albury Wodonga’s Property Guide
IF you enjoy the feeling of privacy, security, and a spacious home with surprises, then look no further. Escape into your hidden oasis through the private front gate, offering a unique covered entrance to your home. Stepping inside, you’ll immediately get a sense of the huge space this home offers throughout. The dining area is bright, large, and airy, and overlooks the sparkling pool. There is so much space, and it offers the flexibility to simply serve as a dining area or become a dining/living area. The option is all yours. The sense of space continues with the large lounge room. There is a real sense of comfort and cosiness in this space. Kick back and enjoy the sun stream in through the north-facing windows. In these chilly days, the combustion wood fire provides the space with the perfect amount of warmth, while the split-system climate control can cool you off when the weather warms up. One of the big winners in this home is the bedrooms. It is rare to find a home with extra-large and spacious rooms, complete with built-in wardrobe - enabling children to turn it into their own retreat. The main bedroom is another real treat, with a huge walk-in wardrobe, modern ensuite, and access to the backyard. The kitchen is a delight, with all the comforts you could need, including a double sink, large fridge space, a dishwasher, four burner gas cook top, and a built-in oven at a convenient height.

The laundry provides plenty of room to store the clothes if you haven’t gotten around to doing the washing, and there is also lots of space for the dryer. If all that space isn’t enough, there is a little surprise in store. Head through the double lock-up garage, and wander up to the home’s secure loft. This studio space is oozing with potential, from your home office or study, to a private guest retreat, or an escape for the kids. The loft has reverse-cycle air-conditiong and heating, internet access and telephone points, and even sensor lights to ensure your safety down the stairs. But the surprises don’t stop there. Step out of the home on to the gorgeous paved area and sit alongside the stunning blue in-ground salt-chlorinated pool. This pool is a wonderful asset to the family home, and makes for a great entertaining area. There is even rear access from the garage. The wonderful practical aspects of this home continue, with an outdoor toilet and shower area perfect to stop the kids and guests having to run in and out of the house dripping from the pool. Behind the pool, enjoy another fenced off section of the yard, great for greenthumbs, the dog, and the garden shed. If gardening isn’t your forte, you’re in luck as the back yard is very easily maintained. This hidden oasis is a must see with so much on offer.

Superboot Brayden O'Hara.
COMPETITION leaders Albury have returned from the week off to record another strong victory in the Ovens and Murray League. The undefeated competition leaders accounted for North Albury Hoppers 16.8 (104) to 11.12 (78) at Bunton Park, North Albury, after a slow start to the match. The two teams had been locked at 2.3 (15) each at quarter-time but some inaccurate kicking from North Albury saw the Tigers slowly pull away. However the match was still in doubt right until the final quarter, the two teams going to the three-quarter break with Albury just one point ahead. The leaders kicked 4.3 in the final stanza to the Hoppers’ two behinds to snare the points. Brayden O’Hara, playing in the halves, kicked four goals to take his yearly total to 43 while Setanta o’hAilpin was once again in top form with another three this week. He has now kicked 39 for the year. Back Luke Packer was best on ground as Albury were forced to work hard for the points. In other round 13 games, Wodonga Raiders beat Wodonga 14.20 (104) to 18.12 (60) while Wangaratta Rovers beat Myrtleford 15.12 (102) to 2.13 (25), Lavington were in top form against Wangaratta 26.10 (166) to 5.7 (37) and Yarrawonga beat Corowa-Rutherglen 14.11 (95) to 8.7 (55). Meanwhile, the SS&A Ovens and Murray Football Netball League round 13 third grade match between Wangaratta FNC and Lavington FNC at Wangaratta’s Norm Minns Oval was abandoned on Saturday 18 July, after a suspected serious head/neck injury to Lavington player Ashleigh Crow. Crow was treated on the scene by paramedics and later released from hospital without serious injury. The match was stopped at the time of the suspected injury, about the 17-minute mark of the second quarter. Play was unable to resume within 30 minutes and as such the match was abandoned. Under Australian Football Law of the Game 10.6.2 (b) the match has been deemed a draw with Wangaratta FNC and Lavington FNC both being awarded two points. The score at the time the match was interrupted has been used to calculate the percentages of the teams.
Going up... Albury's Aisake o'hAilpin and West Albury's Daniel Leslie battle for the ball.

Local Sport Strong field to contest Memorial By CHARLY MCMILLANBENDED ELBOW CYCLING TEAM THE Border's premium cycling classic The John Woodman Memorial (Wagga to Albury) is approaching this Sunday with a strong field set to compete. The event is the Albury Wodonga Panthers’ most anticipated, attracting riders from all over Victoria and New South Wales. Riders will tackle a 135km course from the Tolland Hotel in Wagga to finish at the Lavington Hall on Urana Road, with an estimated finish time of 1.10pm. For the racing cyclist on the border, The John Woodman Memorial is held with great prestige as the event everyone aims to win. This year many Border riders are eyeing up the possibility to own some silverware with a large contingent putting in the hard hours on the bike to be prepared for the race. Local rider Declan Gregory has showed very good form of late with
solid results throughout the Riverina Series and is hoping he can carry that on through the race. Declan will head the Bended Elbow Racing Team's first attempt at the event, leading a solid line up of eight riders. The Full of Cycles’ Stephen Kilpatrick will once again be a major part of the event, the Albury veteran will not only bring experience to the race but his continuous support as an event sponsor is one of the many reasons the John Woodman Memorial has been successful over the years. This year will also see two of John Woodman’s club mates ride the event for the first time in many years. Greg Featonby and Ken Payne are stalwarts of the event organisation, but on the day will swap stopwatches for bikes, with both enjoying solid form. The number of woman entries is promising, with this year’s entry list potentially holding the first female winner. One female rider who will be looking to cement her spot on the po-
dium will be Bicycle Superstore rider Taryn Heather of Wodonga. One of Australia’s best female riders Taryn, will be hoping she can steal the win on the day. The John Woodman Memorial has seen a flurry of talent compete over the last 80 years. Tour de France stage winner Michael Matthews is among the honour roll with a win in the race back in 2008. Much of the young talent in the race will want to emulate Matthews, who has since gone on to win stages in all three grand tours and wear their respected leader’s jerseys. Back in 1994, Jay Sweet set the race record which still stands 21 years later at 2.42.12 at a staggering 50km/h. He would go on to compete in the Tour De France in 1999. In 2011, Albury’s own Declan Gregory of the Bended Elbow Team took line honours, making him the first Albury/Wodonga rider to win in over 20 years.

In 2012, Rhys Pollock took would take line honours with fastest time and first rider. Rhys is one of Albury’s most decorated cyclists boasting many victories across the country. In 2012 Rhys won the Asian UCI event the Tour De Taiwan riding for Drapac Professional Cycling. Last year, young Albury Wodonga
Team’s on the run By ERIN SOMERVILLE TEAM NEVER (North East Victoria Endurance Runners) may only be four members strong, but that hasn’t stopped their dream of seeing the much-overlooked sport get up and running in the region. From a quick 10km race through to a hearty 50km ultrarun, these runners are dedicated, consistent, and eager to recruit more elite runners. Training doesn’t come lightly, either. Rain, hail, or shine, the runners rock up 110150kms per week on their feet alone. Ranging from sprints to 35km trails around Beechworth, the sport isn’t for the faint footed and the team relies on each other for support and motivation. “Running can be a bit lonely and it’s easier when you’re working together to help each other out,” runner Michael Hosking said. Team NEVER also includes raising the pro-
file of running on its agenda, and hopes the Border can one day become a nursery for young competitive runners. And with the team already boasting the Victorian Ladies Mountain Running Champion Nadine Barnes as a member, they’re hoping to uncover more talent on the Border. “There is not much competition for runners when you compare it to other sports (on the Border).” “Hopefully that’s what we’ll be able to focus on in the future is juniors and providing them with pathways.” The team has recently been sponsored by Sports Power in Albury, but is looking for further support to help them compete in future running events. Potential sponsors or runners wanting to join Team NEVER can contact them team at www. facebook.com/team.never2015

rider Ryan Allen took line honours after out-sprinting a determined scratch bunch. This year Ryan is back to defend his title. With the passing last week of Noel Knight, the region’s founding cycling president, a local win would be a fitting tribute to one of cycling’s local heroes.
