BEACONHILLS College headmaster Tony Sheumack is warning parents to carefully examine the conditions of scholarships offered by private schools. Many elite local schools offer annual scholarships to secure enrolments from highachieving students. However, Mr Sheumack said that they were not always what they appeared to be. “In the current economic environment, a significant number of alternative programs have emerged, many of which are called scholarships,” he said in a blog posted to the school’s website on Monday. “Some offers are for a limited time, while others are for the full schooling.” He believes the school scholarship process should be made entirely transparent to parents. “If a school is offering parents discounted fees under the guise of a scholarship, then the advertised tuition fee does not reflect the true cost of educating a student. “In these circumstances, I believe parents who are paying full fees have the right to feel aggrieved.” Currently, at the conclusion of the scholarship application process, Beaconhills has received 160 submissions. Scholarships are awarded in categories of academic, performing arts and general excellence. The selection process varies from school to school, but can involve academic testing, submission of a portfolio or a music performance. Scholarship candidates are charged a fee to apply. Mr Sheumack said the Beaconhills Board of Directors had overseen the school’s scholarship program for a number of years, offering up to a 50 per cent discount on school fees. He encouraged schools to ensure processes are made clear to prospective students and parents. “A scholarship program should have authentic boundaries and not mislead families in any way.”

House raids TWO Pakenham homes were raided by thieves looking for entertainment equipment. Between 7.30am and 8.00pm on Wednesday 27 May, intruders entered a Stanhope Place home and took an iPad air, iPhone 6 and laptop computer. During the same period, a home several kilometres away was also raided by thieves who stole several electronic items. Police believe thieves broke into the Templeton Crescent home by forcing open an unlocked window before stealing two televisions and an Xbox console. Police reports suggest the theft happened between 10pm on Tuesday 26 May and 7pm on Wednesday 27 May. Anyone with information about these incidents is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Thieves lose in lockdown By ANEEKA SIMONIS REPORTS of valuables being stolen from cars across Cardinia Shire are on the downward trend, Cardinia’s Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) statistics suggest. From Monday 25 May to Sunday 31 May, police received two reports of property being stolen from cars and one report of number plate theft. The week before, five incidents of property being stolen from cars parked across the Shire were received by police - the week before there were nine. Cardinia’s CIU analyst Christine Wilde said one of the vehicles accessed by thieves in the past week showed no signs of forced entry. “Over a two-and-a-half day period, an unknown offender has gained access to the victim’s vehicle, which was parked in the street, outside a residential address. A laptop was stolen which was left on the passenger seat,” she said. There was no alarm fitted to the vehicle. Crime statistic trends show Pakenham is a hotspot for opportunistic criminals across the entire region. Though police are encouraged by the reduced number of thefts, they continue to urge drivers to lock their cars at all times and remove valuables from sight.

Young aces belt it out BY KATHRYN BERMINGHAM VICTORIA’S best young tennis players went head-to-head in Pakenham earlier this week for a chance to represent their state. Trials were held at Pakenham Regional Tennis Centre for the Victorian team to compete in the Bruce Cup in Hobart later this year. Twenty boys and twenty girls were invited to play, with a knockout draw held on Tuesday 2 June. The top eight ranked players received a bye for the first day and joined the competition on Wednesday. Seven players will make the state male and female teams, who will train before the competition is played from October 17-24. The Bruce Cup is Australia’s most advanced tennis tournament for players aged 12 years and under. Trials were hosted by School Sport Victoria and Tennis Victoria.

Principal leaves with love By GEORGIA WESTGARTH ‘A BRILLIANT career’ written in bold blue letters headlined a canvas sitting in the corner of Marj Scarce’s office on her last day as principal of Tooradin Primary School. After 17 years in the top job, Ms Scarce had an office overflowing with hand written letters and drawings, handmade cupcakes, flowers and sentimental gifts. “I have a lovely lot of cards from the children and they’ve done them from the heart with love and affection and that, to me, is so touching and special,” Ms Scarce said. Notes read ‘I love you Mrs Scarce,’ ‘We will miss you,’ ‘Thank you for being an amazing principal to me,’ ‘I wish you could stay at Tooradin Primary School it really won’t be the same,’ alongside smiling drawings of their beloved principal. “This is a box of the school, two grade one girls collected bits and pieces they found around the school and put it in a shoe box and that is so special, that is what kids are all about, it even smells like the school,” she said. On Friday 29 May the school community attended its last assembly with Ms Scarce and presented her with two trees to plant at home and at school, framed photos and a time capsule decorated by the students with a message from each child inside. “They are very special presents, it’s so wonderful to be able to look back at the photos and remember. “I’ll miss most the children, always the children, and the teaching staff and the joy and friendships,” she said. Long-term friend and colleague office manager Sue Tobin said Ms Scarce’s legacy will always be with the school.
Scarce got a kitchen up and running, vegie patch, green house so their seedlings and plants to get a good start, a three-year-old and the pre-prep learning links program and a dry creek bed and garden that wraps around the school. Ms Tobin remembered the early days. “To help get us out of a deficit Marj would be the CRT (casual relief teacher) for all classrooms when a teacher was absent. “At the time we thought nothing of it but it was just a part of what made her special,” Ms Tobin said. After sharing her life between Wonthaggi and Tooradin Ms Scarce said she is looking forward to a holiday overseas. “I’m going to Europe that’s going to be the first venture with my husband. “I usually take a couple of months off and this year I thought it’s time I actually went and went for good,” she said. “I’ve shared my life between Tooradin and Wonthaggi so my family is really pleased I’ll be home all the time, I have a house in Tooradin as well and for 17 years I’ve lived half the week in Tooradin and the other half in Wonthaggi.” After hugging almost every child goodbye on their way out of the assembly, two boys stopped by Ms Scarce’s office to say their own goodbyes. One student explained where he lived and told her she was always welcome in his home and the other said: “Thank you for all your hard work, we really appreciate it.” With a hug and a kiss she sent them back to class and said: “It’s time to move on but they’ll always have a special place in my heart.”

Ms Scarce started at the school in 1998 and, with the help of Ms Tobin and the school community, built it from the ground up. “All of what you see here today is what I have done, when I started it was all relocatable classrooms. “Twelve months after I was here

I was able to get funding to build the school,” she said. Ms Scarce started the school magazine, changed the green polo shirts to red, protested against a Telstra tower being erected 500 metres from the school, put in reverse cycle air conditioners, water tanks, solar panels and even a wind turbine. “It was like building a house because we chose everything together, we chose the colours and we did every-
thing right down to where the power points went and the lights,” Ms Scarce said. Ms Scarce got rid of the leaky tram that was the art room and built a new one which the rest of the school was built around. “We furnished the school on second hand stuff, we would go to schools and kinders that were closing down,” Ms Scarce said. Soft on terror: MP By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM LA TROBE MP Jason Wood has hit out at the seat’s Labor candidate for taking a “soft� stance on terror after Mr Wood’s anti-terrorism plan was criticised as being “irresponsible.� Last month Mr Wood told Parliament his plan to launch MYHACK, a program designed to deter young people from turning to violent extremism. In an interview with the Pak-
enham-Berwick Gazette, Labor’s Simon Curtis said members of parliament needed to be careful not to become involved in a “scaremonger.� Mr Wood said that Curtis’ comments were an attempt to create political and community friction. “For the Labor candidate to accuse me of scaremongering when we’ve had multiple local examples of the risk we face already, I wonder what it would take for him to
take the threat of radicalization seriously? “Being weak on terrorism achieves absolutely nothing, so does he propose to do nothing and just hope for the best? “Seeing this reaction from the Labor candidate, I have no choice but to assume he would not support proposed changes to citizenship or other counter terrorism measures.� He also criticized Curtis’ view that the government should be focusing on more prevalent issues
such as family violence. “Domestic violence is something far more prevalent in our community than terrorism. We need to see a better response by government on this.� Mr Wood said drawing parallels between the two issues was “politically irresponsible.� “I take the matter of family violence incredibly seriously, and I do not choose to politicise it like others,� Mr Wood said.

THE City of Casey is continually recognised for its multiculturalism. A plethora of people and families with wide-ranging nationalities live there. When one considers the recent terror plot allegations levelled at a number of Casey teens, as well as last September’s stabbing outside the Endeavour Hills police station, the term ‘cultural harmony’ has arguably never held more importance for the municipality than it does at the moment. The Triveni Society of Victoria, based in Casey, is ever aware of bubbling race tensions and recently held a four-week multi-faith pilgrimage to address this issue and help educate the community, after receiving a $7500 grant from the Victorian Multicultural Commission. The state government funding allowed the Triveni Society to hold a number of events and prayer sessions, celebrating the different cultures of Buddhism, Sikh, Hindu and Islam. Goundan said the aim of the fourweek pilgrimage was to educate its members and the broader community “about different faiths and bridge faith polarisation resulting from the extremist trends in the world today�. “In the current global climate of Islamophobia induced by terrorism and violence extremism, the Triveni Society of Victoria has embarked on a radical plan to alleviate the misconceptions related to Islam and other faiths and counter radicalisation,� he said. “As some young people of different faith communities are blindly bamboozled into extremism by the radicals via the social media, living safely together is creating great fears and suspicion, sparked by the recent, sudden descent of youths into extremism. “Early intervention is necessary to reverse these dangerous trends and a powerful medium is through direct education and experience.� The pilgrimage saw the group attend a range of services throughout the region, including a prayer ses-

CASEY’S draft budget plan for 2015-’16 states ratepayers are looking at an overall increase in rates and charges of 3.87 per cent. But the recent State Budget also states that ratepayers will be hit with a 7.2 per cent increase in the Fire Services Property Levy (FSPL). Although the FSPL was previously collected by insurance companies, the present Victorian Treasurer Tim Pallas, when he was in opposition, said, in 2013, that insurance premiums had increased by as much as 55 per cent. Mr Pallas also said “The FSPL has been botched“ and that “The Napthine Government needed to review the operation of this tax.“ The Victorian Premier, in addition, promised we would have no increase in taxes. My question to the Victorian Treasurer is this: is it not a double standard for your government to claim that councils must limit future rates and charges to the CPI while the FSPL is not subject to the same criteria? Rates claim untrue I WRITE in response to Mr Glazebrook’s letter (News, 25 May). The City of Casey has worked hard to deliver one of the lowest rate rises in outer metropolitan Melbourne. The rates and waste charge for residential properties will increase by an average of 3.87 per cent, or $62 per year, which less than $1.20 per week. In 15/16 we will invest $91 million in community infrastructure. Some residents have asked us about the surplus listed in our budget papers. The draft budget includes a $1.5 billion surplus, which represents the accumulation over many years of the annual accrual accounting surplus from operating activities, which is used to help fund council’s capital works program. It is not a cash reserve, but has mainly been invested in council’s growing asset base. Council’s assets are represented by the property, plant and equipment item in the balance sheet. Council only raises the amount of rates it requires each year to fund its operations and capital works program. To claim council is using rates to grow a surplus is simply untrue. Behind bars A CONVICTED sex offender who pleaded guilty to multiple drug, theft, traffic and weapons offences including possession of a concealed sawn-off shotgun in his car has been jailed for two years. Alex Kovalski, 34, of Bentleigh East, looked repeatedly at his partner and parents in the gallery as he faced judgement in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Monday. In December, an “argumentative” and “drug-effected” Kovalski appeared to try to evade intercepting police by steering into an Endeavour Hills side-street, police prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Adam Green told the court. A bum bag on the passenger seat contained three vials of anabolic steroids, $650 cash, a small amount of an illicit drug, privilege and credit cards not belonging to him and a facemask. Also in the vehicle were a pocket knife, a scalpel and another knife. A more detailed later search uncovered a double-barrel sawn-off 12-gauge shotgun in three parts with live shotgun rounds, and two clear bags of ice totalling 2.5 grams. Kovalski co-operated with police as they searched his makeshift residence inside his Mulgrave vehicle-customising factory, where he had been sleeping since he split with his girlfriend, Leading Sen Const

Among the items found were 57 rounds of cartridge ammunition, a silver knife, an imitation firearm, a Winchester shotgun, 6.5 grams of ice, cocaine, counterfeit $100 and $50 notes, several mobile phones and a ballistics vest. The accused was also charged with theft after riding unlicensed on a stolen, unregistered motorcycle on Stud Road, speeding by more than 20 km/h over the limit in October. The motorbike had been stolen from Narre Warren last year, and had affixed stolen number plates. In his bum bag at the time was a pair of plastic, apparently homemade knuckle-dusters - a prohibited weapon. Kovalski also pleaded guilty on Monday to multiple counts of driving while suspended. The court was told that one excuse to police was: “I had to get some dog food before he eats me.” Kovalski admitted to an ice habit which escalated when his relationship broke down - though his lawyer told the court he was a heavier user of cocaine. He had never owned a firearms licence, the court was told. Defence lawyer Michelle Mykytowycz said Kovalski’s offending mainly stemmed from a personality disorder. Kovalski, who had been remanded in custody since December, had “grown up” and
had plans to marry his partner when released, his lawyer said. He had complied with parole, a community corrections order and a suspended sentence in the past, she said. Ms Mykytowycz argued parole supervision was required partly to help protect the community. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said Kovalski’s secret firearm seemed to be for an “illegal purpose” and sawn-off to be used at close range; the other modified to be gripped in a low position. He considered the offences posed a “very high” community risk. “He was previously sentenced as a serious sex offender,” Mr Vandersteen said. “These are serious but in a different category.” In 2010, Kovalski had been convicted and jailed for three years by the County Court for three counts of using threats and intimidation to procure sex from a woman. Mr Vandersteen took into account Kovalski’s co-operation with police, his loyal family and partner, his growing insight into his crimes and his high intelligence. Kovalski was set a non-parole period of 12 months, with 156 days served already in presentence detention. He was also fined $1500 and disqualified from driving for 12 months.

IF three-year-old Harrison Scott and five-year-old Reef Emerson eat more than five grams of protein a day, they will develop brain damage, liver failure, experience seizures and die prematurely. Killing precious brain cells is on the minds of Cranbourne and Narre Warren mums Tracy Scott and Wendi Emerson every day as they measure, cook and monitor everything their sons eat. Harrison and Reef were born with phenylketonuria (PKU) and cannot break down foods containing protein. Sufferers of PKU have received a Federal Government monthly food grant of $250 a month since 2001 to help cover the expensive specialised food products, medication and supplements, but as of 1 January 2016 the grant will stop.
“There are families that literally won’t be able to do this, they won’t be able to afford to feed their child,” Ms Emerson said. “We are begging the government to reverse this decision which is factually incorrect, the products have not come down in price and are not more readily available,” Ms Scott said. With about 904 families receiving the grant around Australia, the Government is set to save $3 million a year from scrapping the food grant. Ms Scott said the monthly grant was a good chunk of the cost of food but didn’t cover it. “We have to make everything from scratch most parents will try and make burgers or sausages themselves, but I’m a full time working mum and I don’t have the time, so I order pre-made meals from overseas, because no one in Australia makes them but the delivery is
really pricey,” she said. An average delivery will cost Ms Scott $200 on top of food prices. “My bills from America are usually about $500 every four months just for some of Harrison’s meals,” she said. “A lot of people think that we can just use vegan products but vegan food is so high in protein we can’t use it,” Ms Emerson said. “We are begging Tony Abbott to sit down with us and listen and try to understand that what he thinks is readily available is not and what he thinks has gone down in price has not and we have no choice but to feed our kids, we need this food grant,” Ms Emerson said. The Metabolic Dietary Disorders Association (MDDA) is currently lobbying the Abbott Government to reverse the decision made in the 2015-’16 Federal Budget.

Eight days’ jail By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A 24-YEAR-OLD violent ice addict who pleaded guilty to a string of offences including trafficking and threatening to kill his mother has been released after being bullied during an eight-day jail stint. Police prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Adam Green told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Monday that the man was arrested soon after making the threat, damaging a sliding door and curtains and fleeing his mother’s house in Cranbourne North on 24 May. He allegedly made the threat because his mother was going to call police, Leading Sen Const Green said. The accused was also charged for smashing a window with his hand at Junction Village shops - done as “payback” against someone he wanted to “fight one on one”, he told police. He was charged with nine counts of failing to report to police as part of his bail since March and failing to appear at
court on 22 May. On 7 March, he was found by police holding a bag with deal-portions of GHB and ice, as well as empty deal bags and containers containing drug residues while a passenger in an unregistered car on South Gippsland Highway, Cranbourne. At the time, the man denied he owned the bag and the drugs, claiming the driver threw the paraphernalia towards him when intercepted. He was also holding the wallet and cards of another man who, he later claimed to police, owned the drugs. “I was going to return (the wallet and cards) to him. I believe in good karma,” the man allegedly told police. He was also charged with possessing and using an illicit drug in November, and with robbery of cigarettes from a person at Centro Cranbourne in December. The man had been on a community corrections order since October for recklessly causing injury and contravening a fam-
ily violence order. A corrections officer told the court the man had attended just one appointment, and his alleged offending had also breached the order. Defence lawyer Nadine Daniel said the man had an eight-year ice habit, had a learning disorder, anger management and homelessness issues but had returned to “the family fold” after a recent car accident. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said stable accommodation at the mother’s home was the “one thing going for” the accused. “There comes a point where this has to stop,” Mr Vandersteen said. “The choice is yours: if you breach the order, you go in.” Mr Vandersteen sentenced the accused to eight days’ jail - declaring the man’s remand period as “time served”. The man was also placed on a revised 12-month community-corrections order including judicial monitoring and men’s behavioural change program.
Youth threaten cab driver POLICE are on the hunt for three young men who threatened a taxi driver with a meat cleaver and pulled a rope around his neck after he arrived to pick up a customer in Hampton Park. The driver, employed with 13CABS, arrived outside a Catherine Edey Place property

AFTER two auditions and two interviews, Berwick resident Aria Taylor has scored a live audition on Channel Seven’s new series of the X-Factor. Starting singing lessons at age six, Aria will step in front of the four X-Factor judges and live audience at Hisense Arena on Sunday 14 June. “To say I’m scared is not even close to it,” she said. With adoring fans all over the world, Aria has a strong online following on Facebook and Youtube. “I started the Facebook page in 2013 and I’ve got 9626 followers,” she said. A singer songwriter, Aria plays guitar and keyboard and writes lyrics with the help of her mentor Mel Jade. “I just let the words flow onto paper and make sure they rhyme,” she said. Having written two songs with her mentor, Aria said she had released five songs with video clips and absolutely loved what she does. “I started singing ever since I could talk and it has always been a dream of mine,” she said. An experienced stage performer Aria has been in musicals, short films and advertisements but said she is very nervous for the live audition. “I don’t know if I’ll ever get the chance to perform in front

In Brief Gun play TWO teenage boys have been arrested after brandishing fake guns at passers-by at a Cranbourne shopping centre last month. Police and the airwing were called to the Thompsons Parkway Shopping Centre car park around 10.40am on Friday 22 May after reports of two boys aiming what appeared to be real guns at passing cars. The teenagers were found to be in possession of imitation pistols.
Hard drugs A MAN has been arrested and charged after patrolling police found him with erectile dysfunction medication, methamphetamine and a controlled weapon. He was spotted by members of the Narre Warren Safe Suburbs Taskforce in Adley Place, Hampton Park, about 11am on Saturday. Police said that while searching his car they also found dental anaesthetic along with the 16 injectable vial kits of erectile medication. The 45-year-old Bacchus Marsh man was charged with possessing a drug of dependence and possessing a controlled weapon. He was remanded in custody to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Sunday morning.
Asbestos fears CFA crews rushed to put out a shed and grass fire in Clyde amid concerns over asbestos in the building. The blaze began inside the shed on the Clyde Road property just after 10am on Thursday 28 May and quickly spread to the surrounding paddocks. But the CFA members managed to put out the fire and cordoned off the area due to their fears that asbestos may have been found inside the shed. The fire is being treated as non-suspicious and was likely started by a discarded cigarette.

Teens arrested TWO Casey teenagers were arrested in relation to alleged robbery at two petrol stations in Hampton Park and Narre Warren last month. Police believe the two 16-year-olds, from Hampton Park and Dandenong, had allegedly worked together to rob the petrol stations, allegedly wielding weapons and stealing an amount of cash and cigarettes. The first robbery occurred on Friday 29 May, while the second happened on Sunday 31 May. One of the teenagers was bailed, while the other remains in remand.

EVERY single day of the school year students and staff at Kambrya College will be going about their daily business with a camera crew documenting their every move a part of a series to appear on ABC. The program will focus heavily on year 12 and year seven students and highlight improvements in modern state education in Australia. Kambrya College principal Michael Muscat said he hopes the series will portray state education in a positive light. “I think that some fantastic work is being done in our state schools and I really hope that it creates a higher level of public confidence in our state education system,” he said. A crew of four from CJZ Productions are currently recording day-today life at the school and have installed cameras in both vice principals offices. CJZ unit assistant Georgina Savage controls the permanent cameras, listens to conversations, frames shots and records it all. “Teachers and students are interviewed on the fly around the school grounds and everyone’s been so friendly,” she said. “We often get the Big Brother card, but I’d never compare the two, this will end up being very engaging and observational compared to reality television - Kambrya is our vessel in which we are explaining education in Australia.” Mr Muscat said CJZ Productions had researched hundreds of schools
“We’re finding that it’s having really good traction in our school,” he said. The documentary had a positive response from the school community although Mr Muscat said a small number of teachers and students will not be included. “They will be looking at the whole school and all our projects and individual students as well. "We are happy to take the film crew on with most things however some are too sensitive, but we know where the line is for those matters,” he said. Mr Muscat said the documentary is covering the University of Melbourne’s program "only because it works". “When I became principal in 2008 things were looking pretty grim on a whole range of matters and it’s been a very consistent and focused effort but the turnaround is quite dramatic,” he said. Mr Muscat said he looking forward to watching the documentary and that the experience has kept him on his toes. “We’ve been totally open with the crew and when you're being totally open you can’t sweep things under the carpet and, of course, there’s going to be some things in the everyday school life when students occasionally do some interesting things but we treat it as a learning process,” he said. The landmark documentary will be broadcast in March on the ABC. “It should be a great thing for the south east of Melbourne and a positive story on something that’s going well,” Mr Muscat said.

Journey to the shores of peace ENDEAVOUR Hills resident Asanga Seneviratne was among 76 students who represented Victoria at the Anzac Centenary Dawn Service at Gallipoli, Turkey. The Berwick Haileybury College student shares his journey to Anzac Cove. “HE DIED that we might live.” Those were the words inscribed upon the tombstone of 18-year-old Private A.L. Barr as we walked through the Redoubt Cemetery off the coast of Cape Helles on the Gallipoli Peninsula in Turkey. Private Barr was just one of the 2000 casualties from Australia, New Zealand, Britain and Turkey at the Redoubt and as we stood amongst their tombstones, no one knew who these men were. No one knew why they had enlisted. No one knew who they had left behind, yet there was this overwhelming sense of emotion at the sacrifice they had made - a sacrifice not only for the Australians at the time but those Australians to come. One that would ensure the security of a nation that has blossomed into the free, accepting and prosperous one it is
today. One that allowed me to experience this incredible opportunity regardless of race, religion or background. One that should be truly cherished. Yet I’m neglecting the beginning of our trip, with our first two days in Istanbul spent exploring important sites in Turkish culture and heritage including the Bosphorus strait, Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, The Grand Bazaar, Hippodrome and the Basilica Cistern. We then journeyed to the Gallipoli Peninsula, visiting three commemorative sites including the Redoubt Cemetery, the Canakkale Turkish Martyrs’ Memorial and Britain’s Cape Helles Memorial. Each sites held its own significance in the hearts of the respective nations and it put into perspective the sheer scale of the Gallipoli campaign. Recognising that those who lost their lives on the shores of Gallipoli

These were the soldiers with the same frightened mothers and sisters, the same unwavering commitment and same pride in their nation who would pay the same ultimate sacrifice. After a quick stop to see our penpals at the Gelibolu Antalya High School, the core of the trip was upon us - the Dawn Service at Anzac Cove. Passing four staggered security check points and fighting off a lack of sleep we arrived on the banks of Anzac Cove as thousands watched the epitaphs that flashed upon the screen. In the bitter cold we stood as name after name appeared on the screen, each with its own story to tell. Each with a mother that had been left behind and a family left empty
with its dearest son gone. Their loss was our loss as we contemplated their valour charging into what was nearcertain failure given the topography of the cliff that stood behind us. As the last post reverberated through the beach followed by an emotional minute’s silence, that moment in time shared by thousands of others alongside me is something I certainly will never forget. Finally, the singing of the national anthems was undoubtedly an incredibly special moment of pride that reminded me of the reason why those diggers fought so boldly a century ago. As the service concluded, for all the emotion and sleep deprivation of the past 24 hours, the same message became reinforced in my heart that occurred to me two days before. It was the sense of serenity while standing on the cliff face in the still
Asanga visited significant Turkish sites. silence of a Turkish spring afternoon, observing the convoy of warships from various nations crossing the still waters of the Dardanelles. This was the way it was supposed to be I realised - calm, still and amiable. No cries of pain, no hissing bullets and no pounding artillery fire. No war. Just peace. So many died for this dream and I hope we all make sure we maintain it.

Pace of successful, innovative endeavours By CASEY NEILL A BERWICK small business is being nationally recognised for its ability to innovate. Successful Endeavours was a finalist at Manufacturing Monthly magazine’s Endeavour Awards on 28 May during National Manufacturing Week. Managing director Ray Keefe didn’t walk away with an award but will have another chance at the PACE Zenith awards in Sydney on 11 June. Three Successful Endeavours projects will vie for four categories at the process control and automation industry awards for Australia - Waste and Wastewater, Best Fieldbus Implementation, Power and Energy Management, and Transport Power and Infrastructure. “I didn’t even apply for these,” Mr Keefe said. “PACE saw the entries we put into the Endeavour Awards and decided they would also be good candidates for the PACE Zenith awards and asked me if it would be OK if they entered them for us.” Successful Endeavours was a Technology Application of the Year finalist in last year’s Endeavour Awards for a system to test electronics. This year its ABB CQ930 threephase power factor correction controller and Internet of Things (IoT) Monitoring Platform were up for the Australian Industrial Product of the Year. Successful Endeavours made the controller for ABB High Voltage Division in Lilydale. “It’s a fancy word for something that cleans up the power as it’s being distributed through the network so that you actually burn less gas or burn less coal or whatever it is you’re generating power from, to get the same amount of power,” Mr Keefe said. “It’s an old idea but this is a really new, smart control for it.

A Belgium team spent 20 million Euros in five years on a different version of the same product. “We, basically, do it smarter,” he said. Uses for the IoT Monitoring Platform include remote and apartment water metering. “It talks to a cloud or a web service so you can get your data from wherever
it is in the world back to somewhere central and then do something with it,” Mr Keefe said. “These are now scattered around Victoria and New South Wales.” Successful Endeavours’ Telemetry Host IoT web platform vied for the IT Application of the Year. “This allows us to collect reading, send device updates and change the operating configuration of remotely deployed devices from our office in Berwick,” Mr Keefe said. “I was really stoked. So much in manufacturing in Australia we’re just
focusing on big things. “To have small appliances like this actually get recognised is really good.” He started Successful Endeavours as a home office business in 1997. “By 2005 I realised I didn’t know how to make this thing grow,” he said. Mr Keefe went looking for a business mentor and tracked down the right one in 2008. He rebranded the business, repositioned it in the market and moved out of home into commercial premises. “Four months after that we won Casey Business of the Year,” he said.
Push for more jobs CASEY Cardinia region pushed for new business investment at last week’s National Manufacturing Week showcase. National Manufacturing Week from 26 to 29 May is the largest conference in Australia for the manufacturing industry and attracted more than 10,000 visitors and 300 exhibitors. A Casey council spokeswoman said more than 25,000 workers with specific skills in manufacturing left the Casey Cardinia region to go to work every day. “It is a priority for the City of Casey and Shire of Cardinia to create job opportunities for residents closer to home,” she said. Both councils used their presence at National Manufacturing Week to promote the area to prospective businesses looking to expand or relocate. Six local manufacturing businesses also exhibited alongside the councils as ambassadors for the region. Drive-in auto raiders RAM-RAIDERS attacked a Cranbourne Autobarn in the early hours of Wednesday morning. It’s believed thieves ploughed an allegedly stolen Holden Statesman through the rear roller door of the South Gippsland Highway shop about 4am, slamming into bollards inside the building. A police spokesman said the raiders stole a number of items before setting the car on fire and fleeing the scene. Police and CFA were called to the incident after the fire was reported and the area was made secure by 4.40am. There was no major damage to the store and an arson chemist was expected to attend the incident. It’s believed the thieves may have fled in a second car. Owner John Feehan said the ramraid follows an attempted robbery of the Cranbourne Autobarn last Friday about 5am, with footage revealing a man breaking into the store before he was scared off by a shopping centre security guard. The Autobarn is closed for the time being and it is understood that the Spotlight store next door is being monitored for smoke damage. A MAN has been arrested after a ute was stolen in Cranbourne, involved in a police chase, and used in a number of burglaries and car thefts throughout Casey. But police are still searching for the stolen ute and have appealed to the community for help. The 2013 white Toyota Hilux, fitted with an aftermarket canopy, was taken from outside the Cranbourne property between 12.30pm on Wednesday 13 May and 12.45pm on Friday 15 May. Investigators believe the van was used to commit multiple burglaries and thefts from cars in Narre Warren, Cranbourne and Berwick. The ute was also involved in a police pursuit on Friday 22 May. The man arrested is currently on remand and is set to appear at the Dandenong Magistrates’ Court later this month. Police have released an image of the ute in the hope the public can help track it down. Anyone with information is urged to call Casey CIU on 9705 3170.

Last month, Narre Warren South MP Judith Graley visited the club to formally hand over a $1000 State Government grant, which will give the club the chance to replace their uniforms. As part of the Sporting Uniform Grants Program, the club will now be able to buy new gear, including team tops,

Home is the fortress By RUSSELL BENNETT SOMETIMES it’s through tragedy that a community comes closer together. On Saturday evening at the Pakenham and District Basketball Association’s Cardinia Life home floor, the local basketball community came together as one to honour one of their own, Peter Williams, who passed away on 16 May after a short battle with pancreatic cancer. Peter was involved with the association over a number of years, having most recently coached its 18.3 boys’ team - of which his son Liam is a valued member. PDBA secretary Marja Fredrickson remembered Peter fondly, telling the News just how much he loved the game of basketball. “He coached my son in a team called High Flyers, which was a domestic team in which his son played too,” she said. “His family and his basketball was his life - he was very involved in it all.” In lieu of flowers, Peter’s family asked for donations to be made to the Pancare Foundation, which provides treatment and care for patients and families affected by pancreatic, liver, biliary and foregut cancers. The Friday following Peter’s death, a minute’s silence was held at the Warriors’ VJBL game; while on Saturday night the 18.3 boys’ team lined up alongside their Big V brethren to pay their respects. In a touching tribute, Pakenham’s opponents on Saturday also stood as one with the Warriors and the large crowd. Over $600 was raised on the night for Pancare. On court, the Warriors’ Big V men
Pakenham’s Big V men’s and women’s teams united with the VJBL under-18.3 side in a minute’s silence in honour of Peter Williams. 139855 paid their own kind of tribute - defeating the Keysborough Cougars 75-66 after trailing by eight points at halftime. In coach Jeff Reid’s own words, the Warriors were “bullied” by the Cougars in their first encounter of the season - a 24-point whitewash in Round 3. But Saturday night’s result showed just how far Reid’s side had progressed since. “The difference between those games early on in the season and now is that we’re getting those stops, we’re learning as a group and we’re not making mistakes in crunch time,” he said. The Warriors had their issues on the defensive end in the first half on Saturday night, but came out of the lockerroom to start the second half with a real purpose - restricting the Cougars’ highpowered offence to just 19 total points
over the final two quarters. “The defense just wasn’t there in the first half and we weren’t playing our style of ball,” Reid said. “They out-hustled us and just wanted it more - they were playing harder. “We had to want it more and outhustle them. “Every possession to start the third was important, the guys grew as a team and their composure was fantastic.” Reid praised the performances of import guard Darren Galloway (24 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists) and Darrell Morgan, who broke through with a 20-point, 11-rebound doubledouble. “We needed a big scalp to show we belong in the top five,” Reid said. “I made sure the guys thought about the last time we played them, and how it felt during the game.”

The men’s side, now fifth on the ladder, will next face the Breakers in a crunch game at Mornington on 13 June from 6pm, while the women’s side takes on Melbourne Uni at home. Let no Gladiator be spared THE Pakenham Silverbacks have continued their stunning rate of progress in just their second season, defeating the Gippsland Gladiators 28-13 on Saturday and claiming top spot on the Gridiron Victoria Division-2 ladder. Taking on one of their closest rivals at LE Cotchin Reserve in Reservoir, the Silverbacks started sluggishly with a defensive lapse on the first play of the game leading to a Gladiators score on a long pass. But the offense answered straight back, courtesy of a decisive run from Paul Ballinger. Adam Kolinski then ran the ball into the end-zone for a touchdown with his first play since returning from an ankle injury. From there, the Silverbacks looked to pile on the hurt with touchdowns to first-game fullback Dave Fevaleaki, who steamrolled multiple opponents along the way; Ballinger; and another to Kolinski. Lions claw narrow win By DAVID NAGEL A GRADE champions of the last two years, Pakenham (2013) and Doveton (2014) fought out a thriller in round six of the South East Netball League at Robinson Oval on Saturday. The Lions’ brave 51-49 win over the Doves was crucial in the grand scheme of things, propelling them to fourth on the ladder and knocking the reigning-champs out of the top-five. The win, according to Pakenham coach Kerry Twyford, was the result of a fierce determination throughout the group. “Doveton came at us, and they’re the premiers so they’ve set the benchmark, so I was just really proud of our girls to be able to cope with that pressure,” she said. Goal attack Claire Gibbs partnered well with Toni Dart (GS) to give the Lions a slender two-goal lead at half time which the visitors held onto until the very end. Hampton Park has added further heartache to Cranbourne coach Simon O’Shanassy, the Redbacks downing the Eagles 29-26 in blustery conditions at Casey Fields. O’Shanassy is definitely on the right track but must be rueing the night he smashed a mirror, walked under a ladder, and ran over a black cat on the way home from training. The Eagles have now lost four games by five goals or less. Berwick has shaken off a strong thirdquarter effort from Tooradin to win 54-29 at Edwin Flack Reserve. The Wickers looked set for a huge victory at half time, but the efforts of Michelle Barnes, Ebony Dolan and Stacey Sawyer saw the Seagulls outscored by just one goal in the third term. Berwick’s goalers, including Lynne Moyes, Emily Wilson and Amanda Goodie are finding their range right now and might be a handful to stop as the season unfolds. Beaconsfield has made the difficult trip to Starling Road seem easier than it really is with a comfortable, 46-33, victory against ROC. All the Eagles’ stars were firing as the perennial finalists moved from sixth to third with their fourth win of the season. ROC coach Scott Eastwood will need to fire his girls up this week ahead of a difficult trip to Hampton Park. Narre Warren had the bye.
The Doves, who took a four-one record into the contest, had been unimpressive against the lower teams in the competition, but showed their best is good enough against the previously unbeaten Lions. Doveton, strengthened by the inclusion of Sam Raru and Jake Dermott, fought tooth and nail with the Lions for three quarters, before breaking their spirit in the final term. The Doves’ relentless pressure took over as they piled on 8.3 to 2.4 to run out impressive winners. “That was the key, pressure, how we could pressure them and stop them from breaking free,” Doveton coach Shannon Henwood said. “No team is immune to pressure; pressure was definitely the key today.” Jarrad Boumann kicked four, and was best on ground for the victors, while ruckman Russell Gabriel was hot on his tail with three. Raru was dominant through the midfield while Dermott and Mitch Davies were terrific in key-defensive roles. Skipper Dean Blake and Damien Holmes were best for the Lions. Cranbourne champion Marc Holt bagged the 15th double-figure haul of his career, kicking 13 goals in the Eagles’ massive 181-point victory over a dismal Hampton Park at Casey Fields. Holt was tremendous as he charged towards 900 goals for the club but, let’s be honest, as a contest this one didn’t last long at all. The Eagles were absolutely ruthless, slamming home 25 goals to two after the first break, taking the visitors back to the dark old days of seasons gone by. Holt was clearly the best man on the ground, while Jones, ‘Fancy Boots’ Josh Rich and Matt Fletcher all did as they liked, slamming home four each for the afternoon. Berwick warmed up for this week’s season-defining trip to Pakenham with a methodical 56-point home victory over Tooradin. The Wickers dominated possession in the first quarter, but squandered opportunities, kicking 5.7 to 2.2, before the game settled into a dourer struggle from that point forward. Tim Gunn carried a currently undermanned forward line, booting three, while ruckman James Phillips, interleague skipper Michael Harold and Luke Sheppard were other standouts for the winners.
