Our Anzacs live By JESSE GRAHAM A THEATRE production exploring the lives of Emerald’s Diggers in World War I will open this weekend for a series of performances, leading to the centenary of the Gallipoli landings. ‘While their Names are still Spoken’ will open on Friday 17 April at 8am at the Gem Community Arts Centre in Emerald, running through the weekend and finishing on Anzac Day, 25 April. The performance centres on the lives of soldiers from Emerald who died during World War I - Jim (Lachlan Castricum), who was killed on Anzac Day in Gallipoli, and his best friend, Artie (Greg Hedges), who died just before the war’s end. The pair meet up in the afterlife, and look back on times and places on the battlefield and back at home, to find answers to the question weighing on Artie’s mind - did they die for nothing? Director, Evie Housham, said the show was set both in wartime Turkey and back at home in Emerald, focusing on not only the lives of the Diggers, but on the lives of those they left behind. “It talks about the reaction of the families at home,” she said. “First of all, their thoughts about the war effort and, as the dead get put into the paper, they discover they’ve got people in their village that have died, and the effect it has on them.” The name is a reference to an idiom that says that people only truly die when their names are spoken for the last time, and, with that, the solemn words uttered every 25 April Lest We Forget. Characters in the performance are based on actual soldiers from Emerald who fought in the war, and who are now immortalised in the recently-opened Anzac Walk and Anzac Place.

Ms Housham said she and the writer, Ken Purdham, had been in frequent contact with the Emerald RSL to perfect historical elements of the production. Emerald RSL president, Peter Maloney, said the performance was an extension of the Anzac centenary events in the town, with performances running over the weekend before the big day and finishing with a last show at 8pm on Saturday 25 April. “It’s been a very strong interaction between the two clubs - the Gemco Players and the RSL,” Mr Maloney said. Ms Housham and Mr Maloney said that, with the performance exploring the ideas of war and death, bravery and the effect on local communities, it would be a tear-jerker. “I’ve been told you have to take a box of tissues,” Mr Maloney said. “I usually direct comedies, so this is a huge departure, and a hugely serious piece,” Ms Housham said. “I’m mindful of making sure that we’re keeping the gravity about it, without it becoming too stodgy. “The essence of it is that it’s going to be a sad tale, because that’s just the way it is.” ‘While their Names are Still Spoken’ will be performed on Friday 17 and 24 April from 8pm, Saturday 18 and 25 April from 8pm and Sunday 19 April from 1pm at the Gem Community Arts Centre, 19 Kilvington Drive, Emerald. Tickets are $25 for adults, $22 for concession holders, $18 for students and $20 per ticket for groups of four or more. Attendees are warned that explicit language, flashes, smoke and noise will all feature in the performance. Disaster awaits By JESSE GRAHAM A MOUNT Evelyn business is campaigning for a dangerous road crossing used by disabled residents every day to be replaced before disaster strikes. Yarra View Nursery disability manager Karen Dettman is campaigning with the Yarra Ranges Council for a pedestrian-operated set of traffic lights to be installed on York Road at the site of a school crossing. Every day, dozens of workers at the nursery use the school crossing on York Road in Mount Evelyn, to get to and from work from public transport. During school terms, some of these workers who have cognitive disabilities are ferried across the road by crossing supervisors, though many arrive at and leave work outside of the crossing times, leaving them to navigate the busy road alone. A study conducted by CDM Research for Yarra Ranges Council found that 1000 cars travel along the road per hour, with an average gap of 3.3 seconds between vehicles on the sevenmetre wide road.

Despite VicRoads lowering the speed limit on York Road from 70km/h to 60km/h in June last year, Ms Dettman said the crossing wasn’t safe in its current form, and that she was pushing for the crossing to be replaced and upgraded with pedestrian-operated traffic lights. Ms Dettman said the crossing was difficult for even able-bodied people, and that many employees often became trapped on a traffic island in the middle of the road, or were at risk of an accident. “Now winter is coming on and it’s dark, their cognitive perception of speed and distance is not really all that good,” she said. “So where they think they’re going to get across the road in the 3.3 seconds they’ve got to do it, they can make mistakes.” According to Ms Dettman, there have been four near-misses on the road to date, and staff members come out to help their disabled co-workers cross the road. “This all impedes on their dignity

and their right to come to work safely,” she said. Without the lights, Ms Dettman said it was just a matter of time before an accident occurred. “I guess, we’ve got to wait for someone to get killed or terribly injured before they say, ’we should have our lights there’,” she said. “If I see an ambulance going up the road, I think ‘keep going, keep going’. “I don’t want to see any of our families have the heartache of losing somebody.” The council posted on its website last month that it was seeking funding from VicRoads to replace the crossing. Yarra Ranges Council’s Director of Environment and Engineering Mark Varmalis said a new crossing could cost between $300,000 and $500,000, depending on the extent of the works. He said council was not satisfied that dropping the speed limit had done enough to keep residents safe on the notorious crossing. “Lowering the speed limit is a valid road safety measure,” he said.

Loot too big for boot By JESSE GRAHAM POLICE are on the hunt for thieves who made off with tens of thousands of dollars worth of cigarettes, after a number of break-ins through the Yarra Valley and Dandenongs. At 2.20am on Thursday 2 April, three masked men in a silver Holden Commodore stopped at Tecoma’s BP Service Station on Burwood Highway and smashed through the front window. Two of the men, holding a doona cover, filled the cover with cigarettes before return-

ing to the car. However, their load was too big for the car, and the men dragged the sack of cigarettes along the car as they drove, losing about a third of their loot on the way. The pair is believed to have stolen $20,000 worth of cigarettes from the service station, according to Lilydale Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant, Mark Smithwick. Almost a week later, at 1am on Wednesday 8 April, the BP Service Station on the Warbur-

ton Highway in Lilydale was also broken into, this time by three people. About $250 was taken from the store, and the same three people broke into the Caltex service station in Yarra Glen shortly after, this time taking ice creams and other goods. “We believe they were after cigarettes,” Det Sgt Smithwick said. A service station on Ryans Road in Eltham North was also broken into, and the thieves are believed to have taken over $38,000 worth of goods.

Search for thieves POLICE are searching for thieves who broke into Macclesfield Primary School earlier this month, making off with a tablet computer. At 2.45am on Sunday 5 April, thieves forced open an aluminium door at Macclesfield Primary School on Macclesfield Road. An iPad tablet computer was stolen from the school, and Lilydale Crime Investigation Unit is investigating the incident. For the past 12 years the Dandenong Ranges Open Studios event has provided a window of opportunity for the wider public to get more than a glimpse of artists working in their natural environment across a diverse range of mediums. It’s about two days of discovering the amazing wealth of artistic endeavour and talent in the hills, with studios dedicated to ceramics, textiles, painting, illustration, performance, woodwork, street art and more. The artists are also represented in the Open Studios exhibition at Burrinja in Upwey until 3 May.

AN ELDERLY Ferntree Gully woman was killed and another injured after a crash in Knoxfield last week. Police investigators believe a Nissan sedan crashed into a Kia van about 1pm on Tuesday 7 April at the intersection of Lloyd Street and Ferntree Gully Road. The passenger in the Nissan, a 76-year-old Ferntree Gully woman, died at the scene, while the driver, a 70-year-old Ferntree Gully woman, was taken to hospital for observation with minor injuries. The driver of the Kia van, a man, was uninjured and assisted police at the scene of the crash.

A MONTROSE man was arrested last week after an attempted burglary at Mount Evelyn’s Top of the Town Pet Supplies. Police arrested the 32-year-old man on 8 April in regards to the attempted burglary at the York Road store, as well as a burglary at a motel in Bendigo.

From footy to court A FOOTY trip ended with an upcoming court date for a Woori Yallock man, who was caught drink driving and speeding without a licence. The 62-year-old man was pulled over by Casey Highway Patrol officers after drivers on the Princes Freeway in Berwick called triple-zero to report him driving erratically at 7.50pm on Saturday 11 April. When police officers caught up with the man, he was travelling at 102 kilometres per hour in an 80km/h zone. He then blew .151 during a breath test - more than three times the legal limit, and was found to be unlicensed. The driver told police he had returned from a trip to watch a suburban football match.

“THE Green Army is making a real difference to the environment...” The $2.04 million Dandenong Ranges Environment and Bushfire Fuel Reduction Grants Program is off to a great start. We’ve had more than 30 applications for grants in the small, medium and large categories, with requests for funding ranging from $2000 projects to large projects for over $1 million - and I’m sure as I

write this, more applications will be flowing in. Through the Federal Government’s National Landcare Program, I am proud to say that this is part of my $3 million commitment to the Dandenong Ranges environmental health. We have already launched the $450,000 project to remove the threat of wandering trad and other weeds in the Dandenong Ranges and progress is being made on the Bullen Bullen Indigenous Trail. Aside from this $3 million commitment to environmental health of the Dandenong Ranges, we’ve also already had two Green Army groups graduate from their courses. Providing young people with an opportunity to gain valuable skills,

the Green Army Program has also done some great work in our local area. I met with our first graduation group at Birdsland Reserve to celebrate not only a full graduating group with everyone passing the course, but also almost full employment as a result of the program for all participants. In the second group the result was very similar, with all participants but one (who secured gainful employment after completing the educational portion of the program) successfully graduating. Some went on to work with Green Army facilitator organisations, some went on to other local environmental organisations and one even continued on to a hospitality apprenticeship at a high-end

On way to kicking goals WORK is about to kick off at the state-ofthe-art Monbulk Regional Soccer Facility. The $9.8 million project at Old Emerald Road in Monbulk will include two synthetic, full-sized pitches, a pavilion with change rooms, toilets and clubrooms, as well as car parking and road improvements. Once complete, the facility will cater for more than 600 players at the Monbulk Rangers Soccer Club and support the fastgrowing sport. The FIFA star-rated, all-weather pitches will ensure the facility can cater for all levels of the sport, from junior to senior competitions. Council has been working with the club to design a facility that is sensitive to its natural surrounds. Yarra Ranges Shire mayor Maria McCarthy said council was excited to see work starting on this long-awaited project.

“Soccer is an extremely popular sport and this facility is much-needed,” Cr McCarthy said. “Council is proud, together with the federal and state governments, to fund this state-of-the-art project.” Cr Jason Callanan said the council and community had worked hard to get the project to this stage. “We eagerly anticipate the construction of the Monbulk Regional Soccer Facility and know it will provide a major boost for sport in the region,” Cr Callanan said. Yarra Ranges has provided $7.15 million funding to the project, with the Federal Government adding $2 million, with Sport and Recreation Victoria kicking in $650,000. Work will begin on 13 April. The work is expected to be complete by the end of next year.

YARRA Ranges’ new Lyster Ward councillor was sworn in at a special council meeting last week, surrounded by friends, well-wishers and new colleagues. Cr Mike Clarke was officially sworn in as a Yarra Ranges councillor on 7 April by council CEO Glenn Patterson, with many other councillors present to witness the ceremony. After reading an affirmation of office, Cr Clarke shook hands with O’Shannassy councillor Jim Child and received applause from audience members, before making a speech to his fellow councillors. He outlined his history in science and engineering, including being part of

a team at Telstra that rolled out the first ADSL connections in 1999, and thanked the council for his introduction. “Glen Patterson has been most welcoming and supportive, and so has the mayor Maria (McCarthy),” he said. “Thank you very much indeed for your help in getting settled in. “I really look forward to a future of us all working very effectively.” The councillors then passed a review to the council’s appointments to external bodies, replacing former-councillor Samantha Dunn with Cr Clarke on bodies as the council’s representative. took out the men’s title, while Queensland team South Brisbane FC was crowned women’s champions. FAFL is a Futsal Oz Australian Futsal League Cup Competition. Futsal is almost exclusively an indoors sport, which is a five-a-side version of soccer. The sport was developed in Brazil in about the 1940s.

YARRA Ranges Council is calling on the Federal Government to commit to funding 15 hours of kindergarten in its May budget. Council funds about $250,000 per year to maintain its 39 preschool facilities, providing direct service support to the 66 centres offering 15 hours of kindergarten to 1950 children across the municipality. The Victorian Government funds preschool operational costs of 10 hours, while the Commonwealth funds the additional five hours. The community provides a further 35 per cent to meet the government shortfall through parent fees and fund-raising. The Federal Government funding commitment expires in December. In February, the Productivity Commission released its report into Childcare and Early Childhood Learning which supports continued government investment in preschool programs. The report recommends that federal funding for early childhood education and care should be combined and directed towards three priority areas, including the kindergarten universal access program.

It’s down to road safety NO matter which roads you’re travelling on in our beautiful state, there are many reasons to drive carefully. But for those who drive on our roads in the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges areas, the need to be vigilant is even more vital. While one could be forgiven for getting swept up in the beautiful surrounding sceneries, it’s important to maintain a steady level of concentration. Simply, this is because the driving conditions can change in an instant. You never know what potential hazard is lurking around the countless bends; be it a fallen tree, a dead animal, or a tighter-than-expected curve. The issue was highlighted this week when a driver had a lucky escape after a crash on the Maroondah Highway at Healesville. In this case, police said a combination of rain and oil was believed to be behind the crash. Also making it difficult is the fact many blackspots exist on many of the region’s arterials, which many in our community believe need to be addressed quickly. While not trying to pinpoint any particular corner, or stretch of road, we need to be mindful that these blackspots do exist. On this point, it’s disappointing to see the number of drivers who showed disregard for other road users over the Easter weekend. According to police statistics, there were an incredible 211 speeding offences in the Yarra Ranges alone. Compare this to the Cardinia area, where there were 77 speeding offences, which is still way too high. That figure is heartbreaking. These figures are compounded by the fact there were seven drink-drivers and four drugdrivers caught on Yarra Ranges roads. Not only are these people breaking the law, they are endangering the lives of other road users. In our view, no-one has that right. Stay safe on our roads.

IT’S fair to say Emerald has some of the most colourful characters in the region. Letters Population debate needed MANY who contributed to the creation of the shire’s environment strategy deserve to be congratulated for their insights and effort. It is a pity, then, the shire has failed to acknowledge the growing negative impact of the Earth’s increasing human population upon our environment. And worse still, that they are failing to do anything about it such as helping through political channels to start a long-overdue national debate. These failures make the document largely irrelevant as the deterioration of our environment will continue to accelerate. Any short-term gains made are almost assured to be wiped out by larger forces such as climate changes, habitat loss and pollution. I guess ignorance is bliss, but it won’t ensure a pleasant future for us or the natural world upon which we depend. Ian Johnston, Boronia.

Not a bad return on investment. Let’s hope that Tecoma McDonald’s proposed ‘community grants program’ is nothing like the contemptuous Ronald McDonald House PR exercise. This is where public donations are trumpeted as those of McDonald’s itself, where tax breaks and government subsidies abound, and where their outlay on corporate advertising far exceeds the net contribution of McDonald’s to parents in need. While this all-American corporation tries to appear dinky-di, with its rebranding as ‘Macca’s’ and its flying of the Australian flag at its outlets, it doesn’t hesitate to use its iron fist (inside a pretty velvet glove) whenever locals try to preserve the character of their neighbourhood. And when I read how McDonald’s is resolutely ignoring the pleas of health experts to halt its attempts to install an outlet in the Monash Children’s Hospital, then I am forced to impute the lowliest of motives behind McDonald’s attempt to dress up in a slouch hat. Don’t be a fool with your waste CARDINIA Shire Council is encouraging residents to think of the environment and make use of council’s waste and recycling services. E-waste, Detox your Home, drumMUSTER and hard and green waste collections will all be held throughout this month and next. Council’s Waste Officer, Melanie Kerr, said waste disposed of incorrectly could have serious damaging effects on the environment. “Council has a lot of waste and recycling collection services available as well as the weekly and fortnightly collections,” she said. “Take advantage of these services to make sure you are disposing of your waste ethically and responsibly. “It may not seem like a big deal to dump a load of waste in the bush or pour a chemical down the drain but the consequences of disposing of waste incorrectly can be far reaching. “When waste isn’t disposed of correctly it can pollute waterways, harm animals and vegetation, contaminate drinking water or beaches and can increase fire risk.” For more information, visit the Cardinia Shire website.

Buzzing with PAVE fun By PETER DOUGLAS THE PAVE Festival is continuing to attract huge numbers, with the FunFest activities drawing plenty to the streets of Emerald on Sunday. Amid the fine autumn weather, the streets and laneways were filled with plenty of activity, with live entertainment, children’s rides and the many stalls proving typically wellreceived. FunFest committee member Geffrey Pepperell said an extended lay-out had encouraged festival-goers to explore wider. “This year, we extended into the laneways, which we’ve never done before,” he said. “I think this seems to have worked quite well. “The layout winded up to the old bakery, where there was a pop-up wine bar, which proved extremely popular.” Mr Pepperell said there were a few key attractions this year that had delighted the organisers and crowds. “There was huge interest in the monks making their sand mandalas,” he said. “The youth band in the park was incredible. “They almost put some of the professionals to shame.” Also popular were the battle of the bands, demonstrations, Puffing Billy rides and the street performances. Foodies were drawn to the international food court, with some opting to relax with a glass of wine. This year’s FunFest featured a bee theme, in order to highlight the plight of the humble honey bee. Many of the artists in the street, such as pavement artist Ulla Taylor used this to great effect. While Mr Pepperell was reluctant to estimate how many FunFest-goers attended, he said organisers were pleased with the turnout this time around.

Quiet achiever is farewelled OBITUARY Bruce Oliver Born: 17 December 1931 Died: 23 March 2015 BRUCE Oliver was the epitome of the quiet achiever. Described by his Gruyere CFA colleagues as a man from that special generation “humble, with a heart of gold” and “a true gentleman”, his contribution to Gruyere, Wandin and Mount Evelyn communities through community service and his work was immense. A CFA guard of honour, with the Gruyere tanker leading the procession, was a fitting tribute to see him on his way after 60 years of service in the Wandin and Gruyere brigades. Bruce, with his wife Greta (Sebire) was involved with the setting up of Mont De Lancey Historical Museum in Wandin. He was a member of the Lilydale Historical Society, the Gruyere Progress Association, Wandin Yallock State School Committee, the Yarra Valley Machinery Preservation Society, the Lilydale Masonic Lodge and the Lilydale Branch of the Liberal Party. He was born on 17 December, 1931 and grew up in Lilydale with his parents Clarence and Ada Oliver, and younger sisters Val and Glenys. He moved further up the valley when he courted his lifetime sweetheart, Greta Sebire, going to the pictures and to the local Wandin dances, as most of the community did in those days. They married at the Methodist Church in Wandin on 24 July, 1954, and had two sons, Garry and Richard. He learnt his trade as a butcher in Lilydale and after a stint carting fruit for the Silvan Fruit Co-

op, in the early ’60s he set up his own butcher’s shop in Mount Evelyn. After retiring from the butcher trade he and Greta bought a farm in Gruyere and he went into fencing which brought him into contact with people right throughout the valley, and beyond. Bruce’s generous nature, strength of character, unflappable leadership and genuine willingness to help, were key themes in the tributes paid at the funeral service attended by hundreds of people at Heritage Pioneer Chapel in Woori Yallock on 30 March. One of his oldest friends, and brother-in-law, Gordon Chapman, said they met at the Wandin dance when he was 17 and they were courting the Sebire sisters. Bruce and Greta were awarded the Wandin Rotary Club’s Australia Day Citizenship Award in 2007 for the work they did at Mont De Lancey Historic Museum. Gordon said Bruce was a quiet man who did an enormous lot of work in various organisations. “He was quiet, but genuine and with great practical skills,” he said. Gruyere CFA colleague Don Bigham had Bruce as a neighbor for more than 40 years. “If you needed a hand, Bruce was the first to be there. If he needed a hand, he was not too proud to ask,” he said. “No matter what Bruce did, he did it willingly. You never heard him complain about anything.” Current Gruyere CFA captain, Matt Sartori, also paid tribute to Bruce as a captain, mentor and life member of the Gruyere Fire Brigade. Bruce started with Wandin Fire Brigade in 1954 and helped out with the Mount Evelyn brigade from time to time. He transferred to Gruyere in 1974 and was

Bruce Oliver was a dedicated community worker. 137461 captain from 1979 to 1985, leading the brigade through the Ash Wednesday campaign. He then continued to serve as a firefighter for the next six years and took on the job of Fourth Lieutenant from 1991 to 1993, when he stepped back to encourage a new generation of leaders. Matt was part of that new wave who benefited from Bruce’s example and mentoring. “As a volunteer and captain Bruce always kept a level head,” he said. “He never raised his voice, never swore, always picked out the positive and didn’t dwell on the negatives.” He said he was encouraging, approachable and a good mentor.

Bruce had a good life. He would say that. But tragedy struck the family in April 1997 when Garry was killed in a tractor accident. It was a painful and enduring loss for the family. Bruce was ill for the last few years of his life, but Gordon said he was fortunate two years ago to welcome another little one to the family - great grandson, Logan. “He was very, very pleased to be able to hold little Logan just a few months ago,” he said. Bruce died on 23 March, 2015, and is survived by his much-loved and loving family, Greta, son Rick, Garry’s wife Sue and their children Morgan and Bentley. -Kath Gannaway

YOUNG people from around the Yarra Valley and Dandenongs will gather in Mount Evelyn this Thursday for the council’s Yarra Ranges Youth Summit. The summit, held at Mount Evelyn Discovery Church on Thursday 16 April, will host over 400 Year 9 students from around the municipality and is organised by Yarra Ranges Youth Services. The summit will explore youth issues, such as cyber

safety, and will teach the teenagers skills to manage these issues, while also providing teachers with resources to follow up the ideas in their classrooms. The Yarra Ranges event will be held as part of National Youth Week 2015, which has the theme of “it starts with us.” Mayor Maria McCarthy said the council wanted to empower and inspire young people in the community, giving them the tools to deal with challenging situations.

“It is so important that we inspire young people to achieve, and by doing so provide a positive image of the great young people we have in our community,” she said. Guest presenters, comedian Sammy J and Beyondblue ambassador and antihomophobia campaigner, Jason Ball, will speak to the students at the summit and will be joined by Indigenous Hip Hop Projects and Project Rockit. Grants to establish Men’s Shed DANDENONG Ranges communities are encouraged to apply for grants to help build a new Men’s Shed. The Victorian Government has made available $750,000 in funds for these invaluable initiatives, with grants of $60,000 available to help build new sheds.

Around 80 Australians die of bowel cancer every week, but if detected early, up to 90% of cases can be successfully treated. So be sure to complete and return your kit. It’s a gift that could save your life. If you’re over 74 talk to your GP. By 2020 people aged 50-74 will receive a kit every two years.

According to the Healesville club’s program co-ordinator, Stuart McDonald, to have the opportunity to study abroad is a life-changing experience.

“A year of study overseas on a Rotary Exchange gives the student an opportunity to learn a new language, develop an understanding of differing cultures, and the making of international friendships and much more,” he said. “It provides a sound base for future education and career goals.” The preferred age of applicants is between 15 years, 6 months; and 17 years, 6 months, at the time of departure, which is January next year.

Places are available in many countries. These include Denmark, Germany, France, Austria, Switzerland, Brazil, Taiwan, South Korea or Japan. Great race on track By JESSE GRAHAM ATHLETES from around the hills and beyond will be lacing up their running shoes for the annual Puffing Billy Great Train Race next month, with funds going towards a train restoration. The Great Train Race will begin at 9.30am in Belgrave on Sunday 3 May, when 3500 runners will set off on a 13.5 kilometre marathon against the Puffing Billy. The runners will aim to beat one of the two racing trains, which will head from Belgrave to Emerald Lake Park in roughly an hour and 80 minutes, respectively. Last year’s winner, Cockatoo’s Craig Appleby, set a serious pace to contend with for the race, finishing in 43 minutes, 32 seconds. Moorooduc’s Sarah Klein was the first woman to cross the line at 49 minutes, 35 seconds, and out of last year’s 3134 runners, 464 beat the first train to the finish line and 2424 beat the second train. This year’s event is the 34th time the run has been held, and all funds raised will contribute to the restoration of the rail-

Sauce serves to spice it up By JESSE GRAHAM A YARRA Valley sauce competition is calling on residents who are passionate about pasta, chuffed about chutney or find relish riveting to put out their best produce. Yarra Valley Gateway Estate’s annual Sauce Competition has returned for its second year, with sauce enthusiasts asked to come up with their best tomatobased recipe. Gateway Estate’s Brett Spurling said the competition was returning after a strong turnout last year, with nearly 50 sauces, chutneys and relishes submitted to the Coldstream business to be judged by a panel. “The judges said the standard of entries was fantastic,” he said.

“We were really pleased with the result - we’re hoping for the same again this year, if not more,” Mr Spurling said. The rules of the competition are simple - fill a 500-millilitre jar with a tomato sauce, relish, chutney or pasta sauce that is tomato-based and made this season. Though the event is based in the Yarra Valley, Mr Spurling encouraged residents in the Dandenong Ranges to get involved and submit their sauces, too. All entrants, from special family recipes, to experimental first-tries or commercial products are able to be entered, though Mr Spurling said that entries must be submitted blind. “We don’t want the jars delivered with the manufacturer’s

details on them,” he said. Entries must include a name, phone number, email address and a product description (e.g. sauce, relish, chutney or pasta sauce) on the jar. The first prize is a $150 Yarra Valley hamper, while second prize is a dinner for two at Rustik at Gladysdale Bakehouse. Entry to the competition is free, and all entries must be submitted by Sunday 19 April. Sauces can be dropped off at Yarra Valley Gateway Estate, 669 Maroondah Highway, Coldstream; Cunliffe and Waters, 2 North Gateway Plaza, Coldstream; Gladysdale Bakehouse, 2568 Warburton Highway, Yarra Junction; or Yarra Valley Pasta, 321-325 Maroondah Highway, Healesville. Network moves, care continues THE Monbulk Care Network (MCN) will soon be operating from a different premises for several months, but will still be offering the same renowned services and products. This is great, considering their major aim is to help people in need. MCN is in the process of a temporary move from 61/63 Main Road to 18 Main Road (opposite the primary school), while their premises is being rebuilt. Administrator Bev Beazley said the organisation played an important role in the community. “The care network sells good-quality second-hand goods, as well as fair trade and locally produced goods,” she said. “All profits from the organisation are funnelled back into the community, which enables them to give assistance to those in need.” The MCN is a mission of Open Door Community Church, which is staffed by volunteers from Open Door, as well as the general public. Key to the organisation is their Support and Information Service (SIS), which provides material and financial assistance, including emergency food, for those in the community. They also offer relevant information, when required. Over the 20 years that MCN has operated in Monbulk, they have become renowned as being an organisation which cares about people and takes care of them.

UPPER Ferntree Gully patchwork designer, Gail Pan, will be showcasing her rare talents at an internationally renowned event. Ms Pan’s unique pattern designs and quilt bags will be among the featured items at the Australasian Quilt Convention from this Thursday to Sunday. This will be the first time she has been involved with the event. “I’m excited to be at this year’s AQC because it is truly Australia’s premier quilt event,” she said. “Everything to do with quilting is under one roof; it will be wonderful.” Ms Pan said it was just reward for many years of hard work. Raised by her dress-maker mother, Gail said she quickly found herself immersed in the world of fabric from an older age. She has been sewing her entire life and established her own business. She said the convention exhibition was a real highlight for her career. The Australian Quilt Convention, at the Royal Exhibition Centre, is one of the biggest events of its kind in Australia, with countless remarkable and unique quilts on display.

The gardens will both open from 10am to 4.30pm on Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 April. A creative and expansive garden, Telopea Gardens boasts a natural amphitheatre design that provides views of the garden’s contrasting foliage shapes, colours, tones

and textures. Numerous paths meander past a diverse range of exotic and native trees, shrubs, perennials, bulbs and succulents with rare and unique specimens revealed around every corner. There will be dance performances at Telopea at 11am and 2pm each day, and guided tours will also be available. Meanwhile, spread over six acres, La Serre in Langwarrin South contains large sculptures and strong archi-

tectural statements, anchoring diverse plantings of excellent drought-tolerant species. La Serre is located at 41 Barretts Road, Langwarrin South. Telopea is located at 80 Beaconsfield-Emerald Road, Emerald. Both gardens are open from 10am to 4.30pm on Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 April. Teams ever ywhere for Monbulk juniors WITH close to 140 registrations, Monbulk Junior Football Club was proud to field seven teams for the first round of the Dandenong Ranges Junior Football League. New coaches for under-9s (Tim Aldridge), under-12s (Mick Downey), under-13s (Dave Sands) and under-14s (Peter Green) bought some fresh eyes to our coaching panel and are already popular with the players. The seven teams played at Emerald (under-11s and under-13s) and Gembrook (under-9s, under-10s, under-12s, under-14s and under-16s) on a lovely autumn day. The under-9s and under-10s played against Gembrook and made their parents proud. A big thrill for the under-9s playing their first footy game, which saw them show some really good pace and skills with some early signs of some special players. Great teamwork and sportsmanship already, which is great to see. The under-10s were adjusting to a bigger ground and had their coach Steve impressed with how they moved the ball and marvelled at their improvement after one season. The under-11s had an early Sunday

morning start at Emerald and they jumped out of the blocks with a big first quarter to set up the win. In the game of the day, the under-12 team had a thrilling two-point win against Gembrook. Free-flowing and exciting football had the crowd entertained from the first bounce to the siren. Ben Grimes led the way for the team in a dominant display. The under-13s played Emerald and a dominant first half of football allowed the team a good win on the day. Under-14s had some end-of-week injuries to cover and were outclassed by a stronger Gembrook outfit. The Chris Hughson philosophy and games style was on display against Gembrook and the quick movement, game structure showed as the under-16 team with a dominant forward line proved too strong for Gembrook. Wandin and Olinda-Ferny Creek got their seasons off to a flying start; while in netball, Yarra Glen surprised Olinda as Wandin stamped its mark. DIVISION 1 Healesville 10.18 (118) d Monbulk 9.16 (70) This game started evenly with no side able to break away in the first half. Healesville did lead at half time by a slender 11 points. The third term was where it was won as Healesville made every post a winner. They played direct football and it paid dividends as they booted 7.1 for the quarter. Monbulk had its chances but a wasteful 2.6 put them six goals behind at the last change.
