New trains, some pain By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A NEW train depot and maintenance facility will be built in Pakenham as part of the Labor State Government’s plan to improve rail services in the south east. The government’s revamped plan to improve the Pakenham rail corridor, announced on Tuesday, includes more new trains, fewer level crossings but no high-capacity signalling nor Cranbourne line duplication. The government will buy 37 trains - each train would carry 20 per cent more passengers, be at least 50 per cent Australian-made and on the tracks from 2018, the government pledged. The nine promised grade separations are crossings between Dandenong and Caulfield. The government claims the project will boost capacity by up to 42 per cent on the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines - more than 11,000 extra passengers on the morning peak. About $30 million will be paid to scrap a public-private project negotiated by the Coalition for the rail corridor’s upgrade last year. The pay-out includes buying the intellectual property of the private consortium. The government stated its plan would remove five more level crossings and deliver 12 extra new trains than the Coalition’s project. The new project’s cost has been undisclosed but is more than the $2.5 billion slated for the PPP. The government claimed that the Coalition had, prior to last year’s election, secretly scrapped plans for highcapacity signalling on the line. The government will trial high-capacity signalling on the Sandringham line rather than install it on the Dandenong rail corridor. Cranbourne MP Jude Perera labelled the project as a “once-in-a-generation investment in better roads and better transport for Dandenong”. Public Transport Minister Jacinta

Commuters should benefit from extra trains on the Pakenham line. Allan said the project would mean fewer delays and more services on Melbourne’s busiest rail line. “Removing level crossings will create Victorian jobs. Building trains locally will protect Victorian jobs. “This helps our transport system and our economy.” Opposition leader Matthew Guy said the original project would have been completed in 2018 - with the financial contract closed in May this year. “Daniel Andrews can’t say what it

will cost, doesn’t know how it will be funded and isn’t sure when the project will start or finish. “If the Coalition plan is so flawed, why is Daniel Andrews spending $30 million of taxpayer’s money on buying the blueprint?” The Coalition denied the government’s claim that under last year’s plan there would not have been signalling upgrades, there would be fewer grade separations and trains. Greens south-east metropolitan MP Nina Springle said the government’s commitment to fixing the “dangerous-

ly overcrowded” lines was welcome but was disappointed by the lack of high-speed signalling. “Modern digital train signals allow more trains to be run closer together, which is the only way to grow capacity,“ Ms Springle said. Public Transport Users’ Association spokesman Daniel Bowen said the upgrades would provide “a lot more capacity - bigger trains and more of them.” “We hope that the upgrades included in the Dandenong line will provide enough of a boost to capacity until

high-capacity signalling can be rolled out.” He said there was “one omission” - the Cranbourne line would continue to be a bottleneck without plans for duplication. VECCI chief executive Mark Stone welcomed the expected job creation and boost to the rail network’s capacity and efficiency. Expressions of interest for the level crossing removals and the next generation trains will be released to the market within months, the government announced.

STEVE Marsden wanted to use a vintage FX Holden for his wedding, but he couldn’t hire one anywhere. So the 33-year-old from Berwick and his wife Danielle ended up buying the 1950s car a couple of years ago and never looked back. Steve will be displaying the car - his pride and joy - at the Dandenong Valley All Holden Car Show later this month. “My wife and I have had it (the FX) for a couple of years now,” he said. “Half the reason we bought

it is because we wanted an FX for our wedding and we looked to hire one but no one in Australia hires them out, so we looked around at buying one. “I’m a big Holden fan; I’ve got a couple of their cars. “I’d always wanted something like the FX and my wife likes old style vintage cars, so this was my way of getting another.” Steve, a passionate member of the Eastside Cruisers Car Club, said he had bought the cream-coloured FX Holden from a man living near Mount Evelyn. “The owner collected cars

but he’d never driven this one for the last 20 years,” Steve said. “It’d had another paint job over 20 years ago, but it still comes up pretty clean. It’s all pretty much original.” The 7th Annual Dandenong Valley All Holden Street Car Show will be held from 9am to 3pm on Sunday 12 April at Greaves Reserve, Bennet Street, Dandenong. Entry is $5 for adults and free for children aged under 16 years. There’ll be activities for children, food vendors and more.

Heat’s on lock-out parents By ANEEKA SIMONIS “DO not use your car as a substitute babysitter.” That is the message coming from a number of emergency service crews across the shire who are reminding people that a locked car is always an unsafe space for children. Pakenham CFA Station Officer Andrew Smith said more children were locked in cars during the colder months leading into winter due to an increased sense of ill-founded complacency. According to CFA figures, one child is reported as being left in a locked vehicle each week over the cooler months and more than 22 cases in Pakenham were reported to police in the last eight months. “It’s very distressing for the child,” he said.

The temperate inside a locked car can sometimes soar 30 degrees Celsius above outside temperatures, which can have adverse effects on small children, according to the CFA. Pakenham-based paramedic Paul Thompson said he had been to a number of call-outs where a child has been left in a locked car, and advised drivers to remain vigilant during every season of the year. “Even in winter, it’s a hazard,” he said. “It doesn’t take much for it to heat up inside a locked car.” Young children left in locked cars are at risk of dehydration, heatstroke, hyperthermia and asphyxia which can lead to death. People caught leaving unattended children in cars can face a $3690 fine or a maximum of six months in jail.

School’s in for young aces By GEORGIA WESTGARTH BEACONHILLS COLLEGE students’ dreams of playing tennis professionally have been given a boost by an educational first in the Cardinia Shire. Year 9 student Samantha Merry and Year 8 student Simon Young were excited to hear that the school was launching its own on-campus Tennis School of Excellence this year. It’s the first school in its region to offer a world-class on-campus Tennis School of Excellence, at its Pakenham Campus. Merry will combine 10 hours of tennis with her usual curriculum, along with strength and conditioning work, sports psychology, and learning about injury prevention and nutrition, as she chases her dream of playing in the Australian Open. “At the moment I’m trying to increase my fitness, work on my shots and my mental strategies,” she said. Tennis school director and head coach Brett Hillier is confident the young player has many of the necessary ingredients to go all the way. “Samantha is very athletic and she works really hard,” he said. “Passion is the number one criteria for joining the tennis school, along with the willingness to work - and Samantha certainly has both of those elements.”

While Samantha still plays local competition tennis, Mr Hillier said a big part of the tennis school approach was to ensure the basic skills were sound, before advancing to the next level of regional and then international tournaments. He said women’s tennis had changed dramatically over the years and was now “very much a strength game”. Simon Young has been playing tennis for three years and is aiming for the International Tennis Federation's junior circuit. “It’s been really good to get out of class,

hit a ball and practice my skills,” he said. Hard working and diligent Mr Hillier said the mix between study and sport has brought out the best in the rising star. “Simon is a talented young player, tall and strong with a big serve, we are looking to take him to the next level by the end of the year,” Mr Hillier said. The elite Tennis School of Excellence currently has seven full-time junior players, all with goals to make a career out of tennis and play among the best on professional tours.

Playing with fire not wheelie good fun A WHEELIE bin was set alight in a popular Pakenham park earlier this week. At 3.45am on Monday 30 March, CFA extinguished a fire set to a wheelie bin at Bourke Park in Pakenham. Senior Sergeant Nathan Prowd said there was no-one spotted at the scene, but any-

one who may have information about the fire is asked to come forward. Almost a week earlier, a phone box on McBride Street in Cockatoo was damaged by a fire believed to be lit by up to five youths. At 2.50am on Tuesday 24 March, police believe a gang of

young people set fire to material in the phone booth. The youths then put out the fire and fled, leaving damage to a shelf inside the booth. Anyone with information about the incidents are asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Man’s stealing spree By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A CRANBOURNE East man who went on an alleged stealing-and-deception spree has been bailed, pending a delayed mental-health assessment. Bradley Neil Cornelius allegedly stole credit cards, a purse, a pouch, a nappy bag and cash from two unlocked cars in mid-March, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court was told on Monday. He allegedly used the stolen credit cards within 24 hours to buy mobile phones and SIM cards from a petrol station, and a Bluetooth sound bar, headphones and a sports singlet from a Target store in Frankston. The court was told he failed in his attempts to buy an X-Box, an X-Box game and home entertainment system with a

total value of $726 from Frankston KMart. Police prosecutor Senior Constable Liz Millear told the court Cornelius had also been charged over the theft of shower gel from a Cranbourne Centro supermarket in February, and with stealing a $2000 set of golf clubs from an unlocked car in Cranbourne in November. Cornelius - using his own identification - allegedly sold the golf clubs for $50 to Cash Converters’ Cranbourne store, which off-loaded them to their Frankston outlet. The clubs were later retrieved by their rightful owner. The court was told Cornelius was on a 12-month community corrections order for a series of burglary, theft and deception offences.

Cornelius’ lawyer said her client was “one of those clients that continually falls through the cracks”. The accused was compliant with his treatment regime for schizophrenia though his treatment was being cut, his lawyer said. He had been “sleeping in a tent in a park” during an extended period of transient accommodation. The lawyer said a hospital was unable to provide a timely mental-health report for Cornelius’ legal defence due to the involved “cost”. Magistrate Barry Schultz remarked the overlap of the mental-health system presented “one of the difficult areas of the criminal justice system”. He deferred sentencing in the hope of receiving the mental-health report

next week, bailing Cornelius due to his young age, available treatment and family support. “It’s relatively low level offending ... he’s becoming a serial pest in terms of his dishonesty offences,” Mr Schultz said. “I’m not adverse to putting him on a community corrections order.” Cornelius’ bail conditions include reporting to police, a night curfew and living with his mother - who was willing to house him on a short-term basis. Second kinder torched By LACHLAN MOORHEAD SUSPICIONS have been raised after a second Casey kindergarten was set on fire in three weeks. Police are investigating the incident in which the rear of Valley Brook Pre School in Hampton Park was torched about 11pm on Sunday 29 March. The fire took CFA crews more than an hour to get under control. It is believed the fire started in a small garden shed where paper was stored behind the Brook Court facility, before spreading to the pre-school building. It’s understood to have caused minor heat damage to the pre-school’s eaves and part of its outside panelling but the facility is expected to operate

as normal after the school holidays. The latest incident comes after the disused Mossgiel Park Pre School in Endeavour Hills was gutted by fire about 1.30pm on Sunday 8 March. That blaze took 20 minutes to get under control. It is believed the damage bill for that incident will be at least $400,000. The Mossgiel Park Pre School premises is owned by the council but was not being used. Last year it acted as a polling booth for the state election. No one is believed to be injured in either blaze. A PUBLIC barbecue in Endeavour Hills has exploded after it was set on fire in suspicious circumstances. The fire at Frog Hollow Reserve was reported to police about 1am on Sunday 29 March where a small explosion is also believed to have occurred. A TRAFFIC controller has stumbled across a loaded sawn-off shotgun in Cranbourne last week. The road worker was directing traffic at the intersection of Station and Gordon Streets around 10.45am on Tuesday 24 March when she spotted something in the bushes along the nearby disused railway line. Upon investigation the traffic controller discovered it was a sawn-off shotgun and called police. Detectives confirmed the gun was loaded. Police are urging anyone who finds a gun not to handle it, and to contact police immediately. Proceeds gathered from the day will be donated to the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal. “We are currently in full swing and planning our day with ‘Hey dee ho’ music coming in to entertain, face painting, the Easter Bunny, our Lollipop the cat mascot appearance, games, and raffles prizes from retailers in the Westfield Shopping precinct,” Lollipops Fountain Gate manager Faye Owen said. Retailers contributing to the cause include Officeworks, Toys R Us, Bakers Delight and TGI Fridays. Cr Sam Aziz said the need for faster internet had been the “number one” issue in his River Gum Ward, where Narre Warren South is situated, since he assumed council office at the end of 2008.

Cr Aziz noted there were 19,500 businesses in Casey that relied on a healthy internet speed, which he said equated to one in every four dwellings in the municipality. “This is an absolute game-changer for both homes and businesses in this electorate,” he said. “Narre Warren South is the biggest internet black spot in the City of Casey.” Residents can check the NBN status of their suburb at www.nbnco. com.au/rolloutplan.

NARRE Warren South - Casey’s “biggest internet black spot” - was officially added to the Federal Government’s NBN rollout list this week. Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull visited Casey Central Shopping Centre on Tuesday to announce the long-awaited development which will see work on Narre Warren South’s NBN begin in the second half of 2016. It’s understood 13,800 premises will be covered by the Narre Warren South rollout in a designated region that stretches south of Ernst Wanke Road and north of Thompsons Road. Mr Turnbull told those attending the announcement to expect the suburb’s entire rollout to be either fibre to the node or to the building, but not to the home. He said the Liberals had “reorientated” the former Labor Government’s project to make the NBN rollout quick and cost-effective by using “whatever technology enables you to get the job done.” “We’re not taking fibre into every single house and every shop and every flat in Australia as Labor was because truthfully it would take ... people would be waiting for more than a decade to get very fast broadband and the cost will be astronomical,” Mr Turnbull said. “So we’re taking a more pragmatic approach and I think that’s enabling us to roll it out much more quickly.” Narre Warren South resident and IT worker Steve Barnes, who works from home and has been advocating for a better internet service in his

THE Easter Bunny hopped in early this year and paid a visit to some lucky students at Rangebank preschool. Green Gecko group kids at the Cranbourne preschool enjoyed an Easter egg hunt last week, topped off with their hand-made Easter hats and eggs. THE police Dog Squad was called in to track a man who fled through Akoonah Park after evading a booze bus on the weekend. The police chase started after a black Holden with false plates deliberately drove past the police booze bus along Soldiers Road in Beaconsfield and sped off just after 6pm on Saturday 28 March. Police drove after the car as it headed along Princes Highway in Berwick before the male driver dumped the Holden and fled into nearby Akoonah Park. The reserve was cordoned off while police dogs searched but failed to find the man. Training facility launch By LACHLAN MOORHEAD THE State Government last week opened a new $26 million training facility at Chisholm Institute’s Berwick campus. Training and Skills Minister Steve Herbert officially opened the Berwick Trade Career Centre on Wednesday 25 March, which will serve as a multi-trade simulated building site to support training in carpentry, plumbing, bricklaying and electrical work. Mr Herbert was also joined by Narre Warren South MP Judith Graley and Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan to unveil the new facility, which comes as the Andrews’ Government also announced their $50 million TAFE Back to Work Fund last week “This new facility will help Chisholm Institute deliver more training in skills shortage occupations across the south-east, supporting locals to develop the skills they need to get the jobs they want,” Mr Herbert said. “The Centre’s innovative approach to construction industry training will help students and ap-

Air crash tributes TRIBUTES have flowed in to the News for the Casey nurse who died in the plane crash in the French Alps. Carol Friday, 68, worked as a registered nurse and midwife for the City of Casey. She and her 29-year-old son Greig were two of the 150 passengers and crew who perished when the Germanwings Airbus A320 went down in the mountains halfway through its 90-minute journey from Barcelona to Dusseldorf. A series of tributes were also left to the Friday family on the News Facebook page in the wake of last Tuesday’s tragedy. ”Love to Alex and family at this sad time,” Belinda posted. Katrina was also among those who shared their condolences. “Thoughts and prayers with the family and friends,” she wrote. Up, up, and away By BRIDGET SCOTT A CLYDE school which was merely a paddock of dirt a couple of years ago celebrated its first birthday last Wednesday. Rivercrest Christian College, which now boasts 174 students celebrated one year since its first day last Wednesday, 22 March. Executive Principal Geoff Grace said it’s hard to believe the school has already been operating for 12 months. “It seems a relatively short time since Rivercrest was a concept in our heads and on paper,” he said. “To see this turn into a vibrant new school community has been an exciting journey. “What was a paddock a couple of years ago has been transformed into a wonderful, engaging learning environment for our young Rivercrest students.”

He said while the school is still in its early days, he holds high hopes. “The best thing is that the Rivercrest journey is only in its infancy and we pray that there will be many fruitful years ahead,” he said. He also reflected on the year that was and said there have been a number of highlights. “A time capsule was created to be unearthed some years into the future, and the musical and theatrical talents of the Prep and Year 1 students were on show for the inaugural Rivercrest production of Two Tales - the Gingerbread Man and the Enormous Turnip,” he said. The school community gathered at the schools grounds along Solider’s Road last week to celebrate, with a range of activities including school tours and a balloons release.

Sacred ground By BRIDGET SCOTT THE new multi-million dollar facility for the City of Casey had its official sod turn and naming on Monday, with around 100 guests present to witness the occasion. The ground of the Casey Cultural Precinct, now known as ‘Bunjil’, was officially broken by City of Casey Mayor Mick Morland as his fellow councillors as others watched on. Dean Stewart officially welcomed everyone to the traditional land of the Indigenous tribes, and explained the meaning behind the new name of the centre. Bunjil, (or Eaglehawk) in Australian Aboriginal mythology is a great creator, cultural hero and ancestral being.

Following this Cr Morland spoke about the importance of the 17.4 million dollar project which is scheduled to open in 2017. “This is the largest ever infrastructure planned for the City of Casey,” he said. “It’s also a first for local government.” Councillor Morland was also the Mayor when Casey Arc was officially opened 14 years ago. This new project has now taken its place in terms of the largest scale building to be designed in the City of Casey. “It will be a centre piece for residents,” Cr Morland said. The precinct will feature an 800-seat regional theatre, multi-purpose exhibition space,

regional art gallery, community library, civic centre and council offices, community plaza and a regional schools’ centre for the arts. Three City of Casey residents were called to the stage to help unveil the name, a title chosen based on their three submissions for the naming competition. Robin Dzedins, Nino Occhietti and June Talbert each incorporated Bunjil in to their submission, and said they found that this was fitting and reflective of the building’s design. Councillor Morland said this would be an ideal meeting place for both residents and tourists. “It will be somewhere where everyone feels welcome,” he said.

Grand Opening Raceday, at the PRC’s swank-new $72 million home, attracted a crowd of 6000 people last Thursday, all on hand to watch history unfold at Victoria’s first new racetrack to be built

in more than 40 years. “Comments like that from leading industry participants are the perfect recognition and the ultimate measure of what we are trying to achieve here,” PRC CEO Michael Hodge said. Hodge also confirmed that preparations were in full swing for the Bruce Clough Mazda Pakenham Cup on Sunday 26 April and for the club’s first synthetic meeting on Tuesday 26 May.

“We’ll have jump outs on the synthetic track in the first week of May with RVL trials locked in for Tuesday 12 May. “We’re right on track for the first synthetic meeting to take place on Tuesday 26 May.” The PRC’s next meeting is the Cardinia Shire Raceday to be held on Sunday 12 April. THE Pakenham Warriors’ men’s Big V basketball side suffered a 24-point mauling at the hands of a rampant Keysborough Cougars outfit at Springers Leisure Centre on Sunday afternoon. Pakenham was well in the contest on the scoreboard at the end of the first quarter, down just five points 31-26. But even in its early stages, the game appeared to be played on the Cougars’ terms. Their transition from defense into offense was a real standout as they pushed the ball down the floor in waves at every given opportunity, clinching a 97-73 win. The Warriors have had a real focus over recent weeks of improving their own transition game but the Cougars’ full-court pressure forced them into plenty of early turnovers - negating the visitors’ advantage on the boards. Keysborough danger man Adam Sliwinski was ignited early by a big four-point play and had 14 first quarter points on the way to finishing with 21 in just 20 on-court minutes. Facing a double-digit deficit early in the second, Pakenham started to peg the margin back after a Paul Phillips triple - but the Cougars put their feet on the Warriors’ throats and led 56-39 at the half. After what was a scrappy up-and-down track meet for much of the first half, the pace of the game decreased as fatigue kicked in during the second. The Warriors faced an imposing size disadvantage from the outset, mainly in sheer strength and brute force, but forward Hayden Davey again stood tall - finishing with 14 points and 8 boards, while making four of his eight shots from downtown. Sean Armstrong (10 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists) was also persistent throughout on both ends of the floor, while import guard Darren Galloway led the way with 16 points - struggling from the

Youngster Harry Van Dort also showed plenty of positive signs but the Warriors shot just 35 per cent in a rough all-around shooting display. Earlier in the day on Sunday, the young Warriors’ Big V Division-2 women’s side went down to Keysborough 83-57 in the curtain-raiser. But they’ve shown plenty of improvement since a horror 96-24 first-up loss to Casey, particularly when it comes to looking after the ball - having reduced their turnover count massively in each of their three games so far. Natalie Bjelan led the way for Pakenham on Sunday with 14 points. The Warriors’ women’s team next faces Blackburn at the State Basketball Centre on Saturday, 11 April from 7.45pm while the men’s side will take on Maccabi in Pakenham the next day from 2pm.

Warriors bathed in juniors glory THE Warriors were named the Victorian Junior Basketball League’s (VJBL) Medium Association of the Year Award as Pakenham is proving the place to play for a number of rising star basketballers. Craig ‘Calfie’ Magrath and Darrell Morgan were on hand to receive the award presented at the VJBL Delegates meeting last week. The association wanted to thank everyone within the Warriors’ community - coaches, team managers, players and parents - for their hard work and dedication, as awards don’t happen without significant work from everyone in the association.

Tatiyana brings home the bacon COMPETING for their centre at the Little Athletics State Track and Field Championships on the weekend, Pakenham Little athletes (PLAC) did a fantastic job earning a number of medals and achievements. Tatiyana Carver excelled in the Under-9 girls’ discus. Tatiyana’s throw - a whopping 19.55m gave her bragging rights to the last Little Athletics meet of the year bringing home a gold medal. Also excelling at the championships were Madison Howell, who finished fifth in the Under-10 girls’ discus, and Mitchell Mibus who narrowly missed a medal in Under-15 boys’ long jump, finishing fourth. The remainder of the Pakenham athletes also did a fine job with the team managers keeping everyone on track. The excitement of Presentation/AGM morning on Saturday 2 May at 11am is mounting. TRADING running spikes for footy boots is a tough transition for any athlete, but Gippsland Power’s Matt de Bruin is not letting the sporting shift slow him down. He stepped away from football at the end of 2012 to pursue higher ambitions in athletics and was rewarded with a ticket to Eugene, Oregon to participate in last year’s World Junior Athletics Championships in the 110 metre hurdles. But after ascending the heights of junior athletics success, the allure of chasing the oval ball became too much to resist for the 18-year-old from Pakenham. His first official hit-out in over two years was on Saturday as the Power took an emphatic 55-point win over rivals Dandenong in de Bruin’s inaugural TAC Cup season. For de Bruin, his return to football - mostly spent roaming half-back and deep forward - went to plan despite it taking a while to readjust to playing the national pastime. “Really good actually - just took a little while to find my feet again,” de Bruin said. “Obviously I played some practice matches, but it’s nothing compared to an actual game of footy and the vibe is so much more different in an actual round of football. “It took me a couple of quarters to get into it, it’s my first round in two years, but second half I started to read the play better and was put a little deeper playing forward, so it was really promising but there’s still lots of room for improvement.” The pacey utility has also come to appreciate getting back into the team sport environment and the benefits associated with being part of the Gippsland squad.

The sporting-polymath has earned significant praise from his TAC Cup coach Leigh Brown, who believes the unique mix of height and speed will see de Bruin go a long way in his return to the footy oval. “He was in our program as an under-16 so he’s been out for a couple of years and played very little footy, but you can certainly see his speed

and his footy touch and knowledge is starting to come back and become a bit more instinctive,” Brown said. “We expect him to keep improving and keep adding to our team in the coming months. “He’s versatile because of his height - he can play back, forward or in the midfield and his speed is very good and adds something different to our team that’s for sure.” De Bruin - who is eligible to play for ROC Football Club during TAC Cup bye rounds - and his Power side face Murray on Good Friday.

Big Sunday of at pacing cup meet YOUNG Trafalgar horsewoman Tamie Frith will be seeking her biggest success in trotting at the Warragul Pacing Cup meeting this Sunday at Logan Park. The Frith-trained Bettor Biaggi will start in the rich Ken Miller Memorial Pace event, one of the feature races on the traditional Warragul Cup raceday. Bettor Biaggi finished second in a qualifying division of the Miller Memorial and will be one of several Gippsland horses to compete in the race. Frith’s partner Glenn Hunter will steer Bettor Biaggi in the race. Eight great races will be staged on Sunday with the Miller Memorial, the Pacing Bowl Cup, the Eddie Evison Memorial Trotters Cup and the Warragul Guineas highlighting a program which will attract horses and drivers from right across Victoria. For the trots follower, this will be the best day of racing seen at Warragul for the year. For the casual racegoer, there will be plenty of off-track amusements to keep the crowd oc-

cupied all day. Lucky racegoer giveaways and a raffle are highlights, along with Fashions on the Field which has attracted excellent prizes across three categories. The Best Dressed Lady on course will also win the chance to represent Warragul in the statewide Harness Racing Victoria Fashions on the Field contest next year. Live music will be provided during the day by Alroy, and patrons can relax at the outdoor barbecue or inside the first class clubrooms at Logan Park. Koko the Clown will appear again for the children, and there will also be face painting, jumping castle and of course plenty of Easter eggs. Adult admission on the day is just $10, with pensioners $5 and children under 18 admitted free. Action kicks off at noon and everyone is invited to experience the thrills of local trotting this Easter long weekend.

First roar a success for Paky juniors pride PAKENHAM Junior Football Club’s first official function for the season was a roaring success with hundreds turning out for Kids Day on the Oval at Toomuc Reserve on Sunday. Players from under-8 through to under-17 received their match jumpers for the year from senior players Troy Toussaint, Jake Smith, Ronn Llorico, Jake Barclay, Jack Muirhead, Jack Melbourne and Daniel Fry as family and friends enjoyed football activities, rides and music. Entertainment was provided by Corza and Eric, while local artists Alicia Henwood and Bridget Moroney stole the show. PJFC president Travis Hamilton said the event, coordinated by Tracy McDermott, was an overwhelming success.

“The weather was perfect and everyone enjoyed the activities and the entertainment on stage,” Hamilton said. “The PJFC would like to thank everyone who supported the event, including club and event sponsors, local businesses and volunteers who helped out on the day.” Following the under 17’s jumper presentation, Fry addressed the group and encouraged them to strive for hard work and success and looked forward to seeing them move through the senior ranks in 2016. Cute and affordable too By ALISTAIR KENNEDY KIA Rio is the smallest model in the Korean carmaker’s Australian range and has been a steady seller over the years, especially following its 2011 styling transformation. The latest version was launched in 2012 and given regular updates, the most recent of which was in January 2015 with some minor styling changes, suspension tweaks and revised variant names. Working on the “if it ain’t broke…” philosophy changes to the outward appearance of the new Rio are barely noticeable and it remains a neat and attractive little vehicle. For the record there are new bumpers, front and rear, new grille pattern and metallic look headlamps. Inside, the centre instrument fascia of the dashboard has been glossed up and the audio unit redesigned. Australian Kias have previously been available in four-door sedan format but are now exclusively three or five-door hatchbacks with no return of the four-door likely in the immediate future. For a car of its size interior space in the Rio is quite impressive. Entry and exit into the front seats is relatively easy even for larger occupants, though there’s a bit more bending required to access the rear seats. Once inside there’s good headroom and acceptable legroom albeit with a bit of co-operation needed between taller front and/or rear occupants. Lateral space in the rear is OK for two adults but not for a third. Three mid-sized children will just about fit.

Controls are large and well-positioned with three large dials directly in front of the driver displaying speed, revs and fuel status. The steering wheel has both telescopic and tilt adjustment as well as audio and cruise control buttons. The boot isn’t especially long but is deep enough for a couple of relatively large suitcases with the space-saver spare wheel below the boot floor. There are small storage spaces on either side of the boot wall and a full-length cargo blind. Two naturally-aspirated petrol engines are offered, a 1.4-litre petrol engine producing 79 kW of power at 6300 rpm and 135 Nm of torque at 4200 revs, and 1.6-litre petrol with 103 kW at 6300 rpm and 167 Nm at 4850 rpm. The 1.4 can be mated to either a six-speed manual or four-speed automatic, 1.6 gets a more modern six-speed auto. The Rio model range for 2015 has been changed with three equipment levels; S, S Premium and Si. The S is available with either three or five doors and gets the 1.4-litre engine. The S Premium also gets the smaller engine but is a five-door only as is the Si but with the extra power of the 1.6-litre unit. The 1.4-litre models comes with 15-inch alloy wheels; the 1.6 uses 16-inchers. The range will be topped up with two additional models, Sport and SLi, which are due to arrive here around May 2015. Standard in all models are six airbags; ABS brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution and brake assist; hill start assist; high-mounted

The S Premier and Si also get front foglamps. Information display is restricted to a small red and black screen on the centre of the dashboard which, despite its size, is easy to read and informative. Bluetooth pairing is simple and logical and, unlike other cars where the USB and Auxiliary sockets are hidden away at the bottom of the centre storage bin, they are prominent and easily accessible at the lower end of the dashboard. Directly below them is a small tray which is clearly designed to hold a modern smartphone thus eliminating the need for cables to be draped around the front console, potentially even snagging the gear lever. An added feature with the audio system is speed dependent volume control which is standard in all models. Our test car was the 1.6-litre Rio Si automatic in a bad-boy Aurora Black that added an element

of street cred that’s likely to appeal particularly to young male buyers. In the urban environment for which it’s designed Kia Rio is perfectly capable. Even on the 50-kilometre motorway section of our test course it buzzed along nicely although naturally without the cruising finesse of a larger car. Onto the rural backroads handling was wellcontrolled and sharp for a car in this class although the ride may be a tad on the firm side for those who prefer comfort over driving feel. The suspension is well sorted and brakes are on the sharp side. Drivers of manual Rios with limited confidence will no doubt appreciate the hill hold feature. Kia’s recent decision to extend its standard warranty to seven years and unlimited kilometres adds even more value to the already well-priced Rio.
