NARRE Warren South - Casey’s “biggest internet black spot” - was officially added to the Federal Government’s NBN rollout list this week. Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull visited Casey Central Shopping Centre on Tuesday to announce the long-awaited development which will see work on Narre Warren South’s NBN begin in the second half of 2016. It’s understood 13,800 premises will be covered by the Narre Warren South rollout in a designated region that stretches south of Ernst Wanke Road and north of Thompsons Road. Mr Turnbull told those attending the announcement to expect the suburb’s entire rollout to be either fibre to the node or to the building, but not to the home. He said the Liberals had “re-orientated” the former Labor Government’s project to make the NBN rollout quick and cost-effective by using “whatever technology enables you to get the job done.” “We’re not taking fibre into every single house and every shop and every flat in Australia as Labor was because truthfully it would take ... people would be waiting for more than a decade to get very fast broadband and the cost will be astronomical,” Mr Turnbull said. “So we’re taking a more pragmatic approach and I think that’s enabling us to roll it out much more quickly.” Narre Warren South resident and IT worker Steve Barnes, who works from home and has been advocating for a better internet service in his area for the last 12 years, welcomed the announcement. Discussing the fact Narre Warren South’s NBN rollout would consist of predominantly fibre to the node setups, Mr Barnes said “beggars can’t be choosers”. “At the moment we’re lucky if we

Second kinder hit By LACHLAN MOORHEAD SUSPICIONS have been raised after a second Casey kindergarten was set on fire in three weeks. Police are investigating the incident in which the rear of Valley Brook Pre School in Hampton Park was torched about 11pm on Sunday 29 March. The fire took CFA crews more than an hour to get under control. It is believed the fire started in a small garden shed where paper was stored behind the Brook Court facility, before spreading to the pre-school building. It’s understood to have caused minor heat damage to the pre-school’s eaves and part of its outside panelling but the facility is expected to operate as normal after the school holidays. The latest incident comes after the disused Mossgiel Park Pre School in Endeavour Hills was gutted by fire about 1.30pm on Sunday 8 March. That blaze took 20 minutes to get under control. It is believed the damage bill for that incident will be at least $400,000. The Mossgiel Park Pre School premises is owned by the council but was not being used. Last year it acted as a polling booth for the state election. No one is believed to be injured in either blaze. THE State Government’s revamped plan to improve the Dandenong rail corridor has been announced - more new trains, fewer level crossings but no high-capacity signalling nor Cranbourne line duplication. The government will buy 37 trains – each train would carry 20 per cent more passengers, be at least 50 per cent Australian-made and on the tracks from 2018, the government pledged. The nine promised grade separations are crossings between Dandenong and Caulfield.
Driver park hunt THE police Dog Squad was called in to track a man who fled through Akoonah Park after evading a booze bus on the weekend. The police chase started after a black Holden with false plates deliberately drove past the police booze bus along Soldiers Road in Beaconsfield and sped off just after 6pm on Saturday 28 March. Police drove after the car as it headed along Princes Highway in Berwick before the male driver dumped the Holden and fled into nearby Akoonah Park. The reserve was cordoned off while police dogs searched but failed to find the man. A new train depot and maintenance facility will be built in Pakenham. The government claims the project will boost capacity by up to 42 per cent on the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines – more than 11,000 extra passengers on the morning peak. About $30 million will be paid to scrap a publicprivate project negotiated by the Coalition for the rail corridor’s upgrade last year. The pay-out includes buying the intellectual property of the private consortium. The government stated
its plan would remove five more level crossings and deliver 12 extra new trains than the Coalition’s project. The new project’s cost has been undisclosed but is more than the $2.5 billion slated for the PPP. The government claimed that the Coalition had, prior to last year’s election, secretly scrapped plans for high-capacity signalling on the line. The government will trial high-capacity signalling on the Sandringham line rather than install it on the Dandenong rail corridor. Cranbourne MP Jude
Perera labelled the project as a “once-in-a-generation investment in better roads and better transport for Dandenong”. Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan said the project would mean fewer delays and more services on Melbourne’s busiest rail line. “Removing level crossings will create Victorian jobs. Building trains locally will protect Victorian jobs. “This helps our transport system and our economy.” Opposition leader Matthew Guy said the original project would have been
completed in 2018 - with the financial contract closed in May this year. “Daniel Andrews can’t say what it will cost, doesn’t know how it will be funded and isn’t sure when the project will start or finish. “If the Coalition plan is so flawed, why is Daniel Andrews spending $30 million of taxpayer’s money on buying the blueprint?” The Coalition denied the government’s claim that under last year’s plan there would not have been signalling upgrades, there would be fewer grade separations and trains.
A GROUP of youths wearing balaclavas and wielding machetes and bats has smashed up a Doveton house while a victim was inside. It’s understood the gang swarmed on the Cootamundra Street property just before midnight on Monday 23 March, smashing the front door and windows. A car parked in the driveway also had its windows shattered in the attack. The offenders aren’t believed to have entered the house. STEVE Marsden wanted to use a vintage FX Holden for his wedding, but he couldn’t hire one anywhere. So the 33-year-old from Berwick and his wife Danielle ended up buying the 1950s car a couple of years ago and never looked back. Steve will be displaying the car - his pride and joy - at the Dandenong Valley All Holden Car Show later this month. “My wife and I have had it (the FX) for a couple of years now,” he said. “Half the reason we bought
it is because we wanted an FX for our wedding and we looked to hire one but no one in Australia hires them out, so we looked around at buying one. “I’m a big Holden fan; I’ve got a couple of their cars. “I’d always wanted something like the FX and my wife likes old style vintage cars, so this was my way of getting another.” Steve, a passionate member of the Eastside Cruisers Car Club, said he had bought the cream-coloured FX Holden from a man living near Mount Evelyn. “The owner collected cars
but he’d never driven this one for the last 20 years,” Steve said. “It’d had another paint job over 20 years ago, but it still comes up pretty clean. It’s all pretty much original.” The 7th Annual Dandenong Valley All Holden Street Car Show will be held from 9am to 3pm on Sunday 12 April at Greaves Reserve, Bennet Street, Dandenong. Entry is $5 for adults and free for children aged under 16 years. There’ll be activities for children, food vendors and more.

Car fire murder wait POLICE are still awaiting forensic results after a dead body was found sprawled in the back seat of a burn-out car in a Eumemmerring reserve last Thursday night, in what is being treated as a murder. Detective Senior Sergeant Stuart Bailey said on Friday the male body was left barely recognisable by the flames and that there was no doubt the “shocking crime” was a homicide. It’s understood the owner of the 2011 SV6 red Holden Commodore is a 40-year-old Asian man from Doveton, who is known to police and has a “history of drug involvement”. But it is unknown whether the victim was the owner of the car. The owner has still not been located by police. Emergency services were called to the fire at Olive Road Reserve by witnesses around 11.50pm on Thursday, where the car had been dumped next to a children’s playground and was concealed from Frawley Road

9am that morning. “Given the nature of the injuries, we won’t be able to identify him through facial features,” Sen Sgt Bailey said.
“The only chances are perhaps his hands haven’t been totally burnt that we may get a fingerprint, but having a look at him, that’s probably unlikely.
“I think at this point in time we’re really relying on DNA and dental records to try and identify him.” He said police did not know whether the victim was murdered at the reserve or at another location. Houses in the adjacent Butler and Waygara streets back on to the reserve but no CCTV cameras are believed to be set up in the area. “Firefighters were called at 11.46pm when a couple of neighbours actually saw the car on fire and heard an explosion,” Sen Sgt Bailey said. “They (fireys) were here very quickly after that first phone call was made and so they were able to extinguish the car quite quickly.” It’s believed another witness who drove into the reserve to investigate the blaze has given a statement to police. Detectives have urged anyone who saw a person or car entering or leaving the reserve around 11.45pm to come forward.
Police take square-up stance to cut car crime A NEW operation run by police has prompted a huge drop in the rates of auto crime. Operation Stance, which began on 22 February, has already contributed to 49 per cent reduction in theft of cars and a 52 per cent reduction in theft from cars. Run by the Criminal
Investigation Unit (CIU) at Narre Warren, the operation identifies hot spots in the municipality where there are high rates of certain crimes. Casey detectives have run a number of plain clothes operations and the Operation Response Units support these by deploying marked units to crime
hotspots. The operation will continue until the end of June, with at least 50 additional high visibility police officers taking part. Detective Senior Sergeant John Bergin said police have made a number of arrests. “We have checked around 200 plus people and intercepted around
100 cars,” he said. “There has already been a big reduction in theft from cars.” Sen Sgt Bergin said police at Frankston ran a similar initiative which was also very successful. He said police also wanted to make people aware of how much inconvenience car theft causes its victims.
As well as losing valuables, including treasured photos, he said crime victims had to deal with making insurance claims. Cranbourne Senior Sergeant Daniel Baynes also said the operation was a great success. “It has already had a very good impact,” he said.

He said the community must support Operation Stance by partnering with police in the fight to curb these crimes. Victoria Police statistics revealed that between 2013 and 2014 there were 48,000 reports of theft from car in Victoria, with no signs of forced entry in 41,000 of these cases.

Plans take good turn By LACHLAN MOORHEAD THE State Government has revealed plans for a long awaited $1 million upgrade to a notorious intersection in Narre Warren South. The upgrade of the Greaves and Pound Roads intersection was announced by Roads Minister Luke Donnellan last Thursday and will be included as part of the Government’s $45 million facelift of Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road. The uprade will see an additional left-hand turn lane and longer right turn lane introduced near the intersection in an aim to reduce traffic queues. It’s understood savings from the Narre WarrenCranbourne Road project carried out between Pound Road and Thompsons Road, started in January last year, will be used towards the Greaves Road intersection upgrade, which was not included in the initial plans. It’s believed roughly 29,000 vehicles use this stretch of Narre Warren-Cranbourne
Road near the Greaves Road intersection every day. A 2012 survey indicated that average queue lengths near this intersection during peak period exceeded 250 metres. “This is a small project that will do so much. If we don’t act now on this congested intersection, the queue lengths may triple,” Mr Donnellan said. “These improvements will halve the average delay these road users would have otherwise encountered in the peak.” Narre Warren South MP Judith Graley said the intersection upgrade was a “valuable finishing touch” to the road project. “I know many find themselves frustrated when attempting to negotiate this intersection and I`m glad we can now fix it,” she said. “It’s fantastic to see so many significant roads projects in the local area progressing well, which is a major boost for our local community.”

Training launch By LACHLAN MOORHEAD THE State Government last week opened a new $26 million training facility at Chisholm Institute’s Berwick campus. Training and Skills Minister Steve Herbert officially opened the Berwick Trade Career Centre on Wednesday 25 March, which will serve as a multitrade simulated building site to support training in carpentry, plumbing, bricklaying and electrical work. Mr Herbert was also joined by Narre Warren South MP Judith Graley and Narre Warren
North MP Luke Donnellan to unveil the new facility, which comes as the Andrews’ Government also announced their $50 million TAFE Back to Work Fund last week “This new facility will help Chisholm Institute deliver more training in skills shortage occupations across the south-east, supporting locals to develop the skills they need to get the jobs they want,” Mr Herbert said. “The Centre’s innovative approach to construction industry training will help students and apprentices learn to navigate work on a building site, giving
them an advantage.” The Berwick Trade Careers Centre offers training from Certificate III to Diploma level, while Certificate IV and Diploma of Building Construction, as post-trade qualifications, will be offered from the second half of 2015. Ms Graley said the Casey community was home to many young people “who are looking to gain skills.” “Too many are struggling to find work or access training and this great local facility will provide them with the opportunity to do just that,” she said.

Councillor Morland said this would be an ideal meeting place for both residents and tourists. “It will be somewhere where everyone feels welcome,” he said.

Police prosecutor Senior Constable Liz Millear told the court Cornelius had also been charged over the theft of shower gel from a Cranbourne Centro supermarket in February, and with stealing a $2000 set of golf clubs from an unlocked car in Cranbourne in November. Cornelius - using his own identification - allegedly sold the golf clubs for $50 to Cash Converters’ Cranbourne store, which off-loaded them to their Frankston outlet. The court was told Cornelius was on a 12-month community corrections order for a series of burglary, theft and deception offences. Cornelius’ lawyer said her client was “one of those clients that continually falls through the cracks”.
The accused was compliant with his treatment regime for schizophrenia - though his treatment was being cut. The lawyer said a hospital was unable to provide a timely mental-health report for Cornelius’ legal defence due to the involved “cost”. Magistrate Barry Schultz remarked the overlap of the mental-health system presented “one of the difficult areas of the criminal justice system”. He deferred sentencing in the hope of receiving the mental-health report next week, bailing Cornelius due to his young age, available treatment and family support. A CRANBOURNE East man who went on an alleged stealing and deception spree has been bailed, pending a delayed mental-health assessment. Bradley Neil Cornelius allegedly stole credit cards, a purse, a pouch, a nappy bag and cash from two unlocked cars in mid-March, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court was told on Monday. He allegedly used the stolen credit cards within 24 hours to buy mobile phones and SIM cards from a petrol station, and a Bluetooth sound bar, headphones and a sports singlet from a Target store in Frankston. THE new multi-million dollar facility for the City of Casey had its official sod turn and naming on Monday, with around 100 guests present to witness the occasion. The ground of the Casey Cultural Precinct, now known as ‘Bunjil’, was officially broken by City of Casey Mayor Mick Morland as his fellow councillors as others watched on. Dean Stewart officially welcomed everyone to the traditional land of the Indigenous tribes, and explained the meaning behind the new name of the centre. Bunjil, (or Eaglehawk) in Australian Aboriginal mythology is a great creator, cultural hero and ancestral being. Following this Cr Morland spoke about the importance of the 17.4 million dollar project which is scheduled to open in 2017. “This is the largest ever infrastructure planned for the City of Casey,” he said. “It’s also a first for local government.” Councillor Morland was also the Mayor when Casey Arc was officially opened 14 years ago.

Air crash tributes for nurse By LACHLAN MOORHEAD TRIBUTES have flowed in to the News for the Casey nurse who died in last week’s plane crash in the French Alps. Carol Friday, 68, worked as a registered nurse and midwife for the City of Casey. She and her 29-year-old son Greig were two of the 150 passengers and crew who perished when the Germanwings Airbus A320 went down in the mountains halfway through its 90-minute journey from Barcelona to Dusseldorf. A Marseille prosecutor last Thursday night said it appeared the plane had been crashed deliberately. It’s believed German citizen Andreas Lubitz, 28, was left in sole control of the plane
after the captain left the cockpit. He then refused to re-open the door and allegedly initiated the plane’s fatal descent, according to media reports. A series of tributes were also left to the Friday family on the News Facebook page in the wake of last Tuesday’s tragedy. “Love to Alex and family at this sad time,” Belinda posted. Katrina was also among those who shared their condolences. “Thoughts and prayers with the family and friends,” she wrote. Another user, Shelley, said she hoped Carol and Greig “held onto each other and did not suffer”. The City of Casey also offered its condolences to the family. “The City of Casey was incred-
ibly saddened to learn about the tragic loss of our colleague and friend Carol Friday and her son Greig,” a council spokesperson said. “Our thoughts are with the family at this time.” Last Wednesday Foreign Minister Julie Bishop read a statement to Parliament on behalf of the Fridays. “Our family is in deep disbelief and crippled with sadness and would like to ask for privacy,” the statement read. “Carol was a loving mother of two, a devoted wife to her husband Dave and a sister to three brothers. “She celebrated her 68th birthday on 23 March. Carol was a registered nurse, midwife and maternal and child health nurse, most recently working for the City of Casey.
“She was a talented artist and enjoyed spending time creating with her local art group. She loved to travel and has seen many of the world’s greatest sights. “Carol loved life! She enjoyed every minute with her family and friends.” It’s understood Greig was a mechanical engineer who studied at Monash University and was due to turn 30 on 23 April. He and his mum were enjoying a few weeks holiday together before Greig began work in Europe. “He (Greig) also loved to travel and had just completed a course for teaching English as a foreign language, which he was hoping to do in France in the coming year,” the statement said.

350km walk for girls By LACHLAN MOORHEAD MEMBERS of the Narre Warren North Girl Guides walked all across Casey last month for a very special cause. The girl guides took part in the Walk in Her Shoes Challenge from 16 to 22 March. In all they walked 350 kilometres in a week to raise money for CARE Australia to help women and girls in developing countries. Unit leader Elizabeth Anning said she and the group had wanted to “do something different” for this years’ service project, and stories of women struggling in developing countries - such as Cambodia, Malawi and Zimbabwe - struck a chord with the young girls, aged five to 10. “I think we’re so lucky in Australia that we have access to everything we need, those communities out there don’t have
that,” Ms Anning said. “They don’t have accessible drinking water, they don’t have food, and some don’t even have medical facilities close by. “There was one story on the website I read to the girls where people had to walk 12 kilometres just to get medical treatment. Everyone should have access to those facilities, regardless of where they live.” Ms Anning said each member of the Narre Warren North Girl Guides had begun walking extra distances each week to prepare themselves for the 350-kilometre challenge. “Walking is something we do every day, but now we all have a great purpose for each step,” she said. New service helps find registered roadkill pets By BRIDGET SCOTT OWNERS of deceased animals found on the road will now be notified thanks to a change in standards. The animals will be scanned and owners notified after additional standards were recently established. Cranbourne resident Tracey Prillwitz was concerned over the previous laws which meant pets
would not be checked and owners would not be notified if their animal had been found dead. “I have two dogs and if something happened to them I would hate it, and could not stand not being notified,” she said. “Their absent and you never find out why.” Councillor Gary Rowe suggested the changes and said animals will now be

animal registration renewal notices to all of the pet owners of dogs and cats in the municipality.” He said it is the pet owner’s responsibility to ensure their animal is registered and payment is made by 10 April. Animal registrations fees help provide services which include daily updating of the City of Casey Lost Pets Register, reunit-
ing lost pets with their families in up to 68 per cent of cases, collection of lost and wandering pets, including 24-hour service during peak periods. Animal registrations can be paid online via Council’s website at www. casey.vic.gov.au/pets or via BPAY, Australia Post or over the phone by calling Customer Service on 9705 5200.
Centre stage for youth fun festival THE City of Casey is set to join in the fun for National Youth Week later this month. Young people from Casey are being encouraged to join in the celebrations from 10 to 19 April, which will include a live music Fringe Fest, and the annual Rock ‘n’ Skate Festival, among other activities. “Whether it be through volunteering, sport, art, music, education or community service, young people make valuable contributions to Casey,” Mayor Mick Morland said. “Council hopes the National Youth Week events will bring young residents together!” The Fringe Fest will be held on Friday 10 April from 6.15pm to 11.15pm at the Cranbourne Public Hall and allows a host of emerging young performers from the municipality to try their hand on stage. The Rock ‘n’ Skate Festival will be held on Saturday 18 April at the Shed Indoor Skatepark in Cranbourne East and will include a scooter, BMX and skate competition. STUDENTS at Rangebank Primary School got in touch with a number of different cultures last week during a highly entertaining performance by Bernard Mangakahia. Mr Mangakahia traced his family history and the culture of the Pacific Island through story and dance, and introduced cultures such as Native Indian American, New Zealand Maori, Hawaiian and Samoan to the children. The performance culminated with an Australian Hip-hop dance that kept the students eyes peeled. Assistant Principal Lorraine Humphrey said
his show had a strong message for the children. “It showed our students about how it is important for each student to learn about their own heritage, to develop the power of self-belief and respect themselves and others,” she said. “Some eager and very lucky Rangebank students were fortunate enough to perform in a dance with Bernard. “He encouraged every student to discover and follow their own dreams. “Our students enjoyed every second of the show.”

Top Cavalier girls duly noted By JARROD POTTER THEY asked their coach if they would get an article in the newspaper after achieving the same lofty feat as their junior Casey Cavaliers counterparts. After getting through an arduous knockout competition to make the Victorian Championship (VC) grade, it’s safe to say we believe the Cavaliers girls have earned this publication’s recognition. The Casey Cavaliers under-20 girls’ junior basketball team - coached by Tim Hewitt - earned the right to play in the Victorian Junior Basketball League’s (VJBL) highest ranked division in 2015. Hewitt was thrilled to see his girls charge through the elimination phase - earning their VC berth after a pair of hard-fought victories over Western Port and Keysborough. “Stoked - we set those goals at the start of the year and to get it was fantastic,” Hewitt said. “We finished third in the pool and were put into the knock-out stage where we beat Western Port. “Then against Keysborough we played really well that night – defence was awesome, we hit our shots, everything clicked and we got in. “First time I’ve gotten in to VC, so it’s good to be back at the top.”

Vikings cut down by tall Cavaliers By JARROD POTTER FOUR bigs to the floor dominated the Vikings as Casey’s tallest timber excelled against Blackburn in its 84-77 win. With Casey’s mountainous forwards stopping any Vikings’ charge, the Cavaliers were able to turn around their form and push back into Big V Division 1’s top four. The Cavaliers stormed the defensive end to keep Blackburn without an offensive board in the second term. Stewart Baird’s men would eke out a 41-30 half-time lead before the Vikings started to regain
composure and sink their shots. Fighting efforts from Chris Payne (22 points) and Michael D’Agostino (14 points, 8 rebounds) were not enough to storm the Fortress as Casey held on to earn its second win of its inaugural Division-1 season. Double-doubles from Matt Witherden (19 points, 11 rebounds) and Lester Strong (13 points, 11 rebounds) were complemented nicely by sixth man Dean Johnson (15 points, 9 rebounds) and star recruit Brent Hobba (15 points, 9 rebounds) nailing their shots to round out the triumph. Casey is set to take an early-
season Easter break this weekend before heading to Keilor to face the Thunder on 11 April. It was a tougher outing for the Casey women however, downed 54-69 as Chelsea proved too strong on Sunday afternoon. Best of the Cavaliers were Jess Szalek (12 points, 7 rebounds) and Sammie Johnson (10 points, 10 rebounds) while Tarryn Wilkin (9 points, 10 rebounds) went within a hair of snaring her first double-double in Cavaliers’ colours. While the inaugural year in any new division can be hard to judge from the outset, Hewitt hopes his Cavaliers can push through to the middle section of the table and potentially have a
good crack at finals. “If we can make playoffs I’d be happy, but realistically we’ll sit in the middle of the field,” Hewitt said. “It will be a case of getting that fourth-fifth through to seventh and I’d consider that a successful season.” The under-20 girls are the third Cavaliers team to make the VC grade alongside Casey’s under-14 boys and the under-12 1 boys.
Old Smith out, new Smith in By JARROD POTTER A FAMILIAR face will be at the helm of Cranbourne Women’s Football Club this season as assistant coach Kris Smith steps up to the VWFL top job. With 2014 coach Shaun Smith heading up to Bendigo for work opportunities, Kris Smith was keen to take the reins. The former Berwick/Cranbourne assistant coach has been an integral part of the south-east women’s football community and is ready to help push Cranbourne back up the ladder. “It’s good – taking on the top job is an interesting one,” Smith said. “It’s surprising as I wasn’t expecting it – was expecting Shaun to be here this year - but he got that job at the Bendigo Hospital and that was the end of it.” It wasn’t just the playing group at Berwick and Cranbourne that benefited from Shaun Smith’s tutelage as Kris Smith honed his own coaching based off advice from the former Melbourne spring heel and previously from Berwick WFC coach Darren Logan. “Learned plenty of him (Smith) and learned plenty of Loges - Darren Logan - the previous coach before him as well

Kirsten Macleod (shoulder) is the only major injury carried
over from the pre-season, but she hopes to return to the blue and gold jumper by Round 3. Youth Girls players Hayley Wildes and Brittany Maroney round out the new recruits as they join the senior side from the South East Juniors competition. With numbers ballooning out towards 50 players, the club is also considering putting a third team into the VWFL in 2016. Cranbourne’s second VWFL season is set to kick off as its Division-1 team clashes against St Kilda Sharks at noon Sunday 12 April at the Peanut Farm Reserve.

It was a harsh arrival for the Dandenong Stingrays as the visitors were shown little hospitality in a 5.9 (39) to 14.10 (94) Gippsland-style dissection. The Power was well-andtruly on while the Stingrays floundered - as lateral switches in the defensive end and a shocking kicking efficiency proving lethal for Dandenong throughout the clash. The switching and kicking left little doubt to the crowd who was in charge as Dandenong’s lack of football acumen was inverted by the Power, who worked to the fall of the ball, fought for each other and made a contest of every stoppage. Josh Beaver, Matson Lawson, Holly Brettle and Tyrone Dobrunz are set to take on the Australia’s finest swimmers at the championships - held 3-10 April at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre. TigerSharks coach Ben Hiddlestone said despite a varied preparation - with some casting their gaze more towards Rio qualifying than World Champs - the quartet is ready to have a crack at another international qualifying encounter. “They fly out Thursday morning and we’ll see what happens up there - fingers crossed,” Hiddlestone said. “Got a bit of a mixed bag preparation I suppose - bit of ebb and flow in the lull before the Olympic year.” Commonwealth Games medallists Josh Beaver, from Tooradin, and Langwarrin’s Matson Lawson are primed for a world championships place and rate highly in the 200m backstroke and 100m backstroke. ONCE feared, but recently forgotten, Doveton will be looking to wind back the clock and repeat history in the inaugural South East Football Netball League season in 2015. The Doves, under Steve Henwood, won the inaugural Casey Cardinia league premiership in 2005, but have faded since, having not played finals since finishing top and losing the 2009 grand final to Pakenham. The Doves, who invested heavily in their failed 2013 campaign, reverted to a shoestring budget last year but have now reloaded their guns as they look to shoot to the pointy end of the table. Third-year coach Shannon Henwood - nephew of Steve - insists there is only one destination that will satisfy his club’s desire. “We’ve recruited well so there are no excuses; I’ve told the boys that our expectation is to at least play finals,” the three-time best and fairest winner said. Recruited well... that could be an early contender for the year’s biggest understatement because the Doves have added some real cream to their crop.
At the top of the list is powerhouse ruckman Russell Gabriel, the about to turn 26-year-old who has played at the elite level for the best part of a decade. Gabriel played two seasons with the Dandenong Stingrays and was captain in 2007, played with Frankston in 2008, before winning a Norm Walker Medal at Doveton in 2009. He has played four of the last five seasons at Frankston, interspersed with a year at East Fremantle in 2012. The Doves have further cured their biggest deficiency from last season - height - with the return of former AFL-listed player Jarrad Boumann from Wangaratta Rovers, the recruitment of 196-centimetre (six foot five inches in old money) Mitch Davies from Nilma-Darnum and the return of club stalwart Nathan Wilson from Doveton Eagles. Henwood can’t wait to put that size to good use. “Last season, apart from Frankie (D’Agostino), we had no size,” he said. “This year we’re spoilt for size, with two dominant ruckman and some key-position players to kick to.
“Last year we were very defensively minded, and it needed to be that way, but we’ll take it on a bit more this year. “Obviously defence will still be important but we’ve got the players, the talls, to go the other way now.” The influx at Robinson Oval doesn’t stop there with 2005 premiership player Keith Dobson joining Peter Dye, Malis Lokeron and Nick Battle as new faces from last season. Callum Pattie will pull on the boots after a year in the coach’s box, where he’ll be replaced by former Nyora ruckman Peter Greenstreet. Henwood, who has carried the Doves’ midfield for the last few seasons, will also enjoy the company of former Oakleigh Chargers and Port Melbourne player, Sam Raru. “He’s an inside player, tough around the clinches, but has the polish to finish off his work and kick goals,” Henwood said. “Mitch Viney and Pickles (Michael Henry) are two others that are coming in injury free for the first time in a while so we’re pretty well covered in the middle of the ground.” Henwood will stand down as

The energy, enthusiasm and all out endeavour shown by the youngsters was quite inspirational and staff from Melbourne City FC who supported the event were very impressed by the high standard of play throughout. All teams comprising boys, girls and mixed, played five games with elimination matches proving extremely competitive following the round-robin matches in the morning. Mary McKillop proved successful in the boys’ finale, defeating St Margaret’s/ Berwick Grammar School while the girls’ title was claimed by overall champions Fountain Gate over Mary McKillop. CARDINIA BEACONHILLS GOLF IT WAS been a big weekend of golf at Cardinia Beaconhills with the final round of the 2015 Club Championship played on Saturday. The top 12 in each grade played off to decide the titles, and it was Brian Meneilly who won the Championship for the second year in a row with a total score of 294 over four rounds. Noel Pye was in second place when he went into the last round in the B Grade, and after a great round on Saturday he secured himself the B Grade Championship with a gross score of 326. Wes Dunkley also went into the last round in second place and won the C Grade with a gross score of 357. Saturday’s stableford competition saw Peter Langdon (8) return the best score in the A Grade with 39 points, Darren Richmond (14) was the B-Grade winner with 41 points while Stephen Jones (19) won the C Grade with 39 stableford points. Playing off a handicap of 19, David Norris returned the best score in Sunday’s stableford competition with 40 points to runner-up John Holden (18) with 39 points.
