A metre matters By JESSE GRAHAM A FORMER Yarra Ranges councillor has called for changes to current cycling laws, which could see drivers fined for not keeping a metre’s distance. But Eastern Metropolitan MLC, Samantha Dunn, said the bill she tabled last week would improve safety for cyclists in areas such as the Dandenongs and provide clarity to currently subjective laws. Ms Dunn’s bill, tabled on Wednesday 18 March, would make it unlawful for motorists to overtake a cyclist with less than one metre distance, or less than a metre and a half if the speed limit was over 60 kilometres per hour. Currently, the law only requires drivers to pass with “sufficient distance” and agencies such as VicRoads advise drivers to try and leave a metre distance. The penalty for not leaving sufficient distance is a $1500 fine, which would remain the punishment for drivers not leaving one metre under the new laws. Ms Dunn, former Lyster Ward councillor, told the Mail the proposed bill would bring “clarity” to the law, which is currently more open to interpretation, and improve safety for riders in areas such as the Dandenongs. “There is no doubt that the roads in the Dandenongs are challenging, whether you’re a cyclist or a motorist, and combined it’s even more difficult,” she said. “I think, ultimately, it’s about providing clarity to drivers around what is a safe passing distance and it’s about keeping cyclists as safe as possible they’re incredibly vulnerable road users.” Referencing similar laws being trialled in Queensland, South Australia and the ACT, Ms Dunn said that having one metre for passing was already established across the country, and had been proven to improve rider safety. “For me, Victoria is lagging behind at the moment - I think it’s time for us to get up to date with what’s happening around the country,” she said. Unnecessary with current laws,” the organisation posted on Twitter. “Even when passing riders in bike lanes, riding to the right of the lane, drivers will need to change lanes if the new metre rule is introduced.” But Ms Dunn said the distance was measured from the bike, not from the

edge of bike lanes, which are widely used in the city and in areas in the Yarra Ranges, such as Healesville. The laws on passing cyclists currently allow for drivers to cross a solid white line when passing, only when safe to do so, and this would continue to be the case if Ms Dunn’s bill becomes law. “The law is in place to give guidance, but the reality is that drivers should only pass a cyclist if it is safe to do so - ultimately, that should guide their decisions on how they drive on the road,” Ms Dunn said.

Monbulk MP and Deputy Premier, James Merlino, said the legislation would need to pass a “commonsense test” to be supported. “You think about the Dandenong Ranges and how we can make laws that work more practically - we’ve got quite narrow streets up the hills,” he said. “If you have a minimum distance of one, one and a half metres, then we’ll find in the hills that we’ve got cars on the other side of the road. He said that, although the Greens had put forward similar legislation in
the past, the government was prepared to have a look at Ms Dunn’s bill. Ms Dunn said the bill would be discussed in coming months, but was not able to give an approximate timeline to when it will be debated in parliament. Cranes to fight cancer By JESSE GRAHAM WHEN a barbecue raising money for brain cancer research fires up next week, Mount Evelyn’s Anna Griffith will remember her brother. Ms Griffith, who has organised the community barbecue from 5pm to 7pm on Friday 27 March at the Mount Evelyn Community Link, knows personally the pain the disease can bring to families. Her brother, Davyd Gartlan, died of brain cancer eight years ago, after living with the disease for 19 years. But Davyd’s story is a rarity - many people don’t live to see their fifth year after being diagnosed with the disease, which has one of the highest mortalities among cancers. “Statistically, it was an amazing amount of time, and we were so blessed to spend that time with him,“ Ms Griffith said. “He lived his life to the full, but he left us too soon.“ The barbecue has been organised with the Mount Evelyn Community House and the Cure Brain Cancer Foundation, which advocates for funding and research on the disease. Brain cancer exists in three types: primary, which begins in the brain; metastatic, which begins elsewhere and spreads to the brain; and paediatric, which occurs in children. Inside the primary category of brain cancers, giloblastoma multiforme (GBM), astrocytoma, medulloblastoma and ependymoma are just some of the different types of tumours that exist, and even benign tumours can be life-threatening when in vital areas. According to the foundation, brain cancer has a very high mortality rate; roughly two in 10 people diagnosed survive for more than five years. To top this off, survival rates have only improved by two per cent between 1982-'87 and 2006-'10, and Ms Griffith said awareness of the disease was relatively low. “It’s an unknown story and it’s an under-funded cancer,” she said. “Brain cancer has one of the

Ms Griffith said that many people had connected with the cause and the Mount Evelyn event, with some people travelling five hours to come to the fund-raiser. The event will have attractions for people of all ages, with children’s entertainment, face painting and a craft table, along with origami paper crane making and the Mount Evelyn

The paper crane is the symbol of the organisation, and, according to a Japanese legend, anyone able to fold a thousand of the paper cranes will be granted a wish. With weather looking mild as of deadline, Ms Griffith said about 50-100 people were expected to be at the event, but that they hoped members of the community would come out and far exceed that. Gnomes descend on Tecoma By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM IF you see a gNOme or two walking the streets of Tecoma next month, don’t be surprised. Organisers of the annual gNOmeageddon event are hoping you will see almost 500 of them, as they attempt to break the world record for the largest gathering of people dressed as garden gnomes. The gathering aims to combine peaceful protest with community spirit and fun for many Tecoma residents that continue their fight against McDonald’s. GNOmeageddon chief Esther Kelly was heavily involved in the protests against the opening of the franchise. She said the event celebrated the loyalty and tenacity of the people of Tecoma. “If anything, it’s not going to be a massive protest day,” she said. “It’s going to be a community event where our kids will get to have a bit of fun with all these familiar faces that we’ve been meeting for the past three years up at the site, under these terrible conditions.” Inspired by her two daughters, Esther developed the idea as a way to engage the community in a fun and appealing way. “I thought - How do we continue to engage? How do we keep the community together and keep it focused and give something back to our kids? I think they deserve to have a bit of fun and this is a great way to do it.” Adhering to the Guinness Book of World Records’ requirements for dressing as a garden gnome, female gnomes will need to wear a solid coloured or patterned dress with an apron, shirt and skirt with

The event will kick off at noon on 19 April at the Upwey Hall. As well as the record attempt, the day will involve a community barbecue, DJ and kids’ space and the official count will take place at 2pm. All are invited to join and encouraged to dress as a gnome to
be involved in a potential world record. She said the success of previous years was testament to the strength of the community in Tecoma, and was hoping that this year’s event would attract the 479 gnomes needed to break the record. “The way the community supported the campaign against McDonald’s was unbelievable, and now we’ve seen the same spirit in gNOmeageddon,” she said. “We’ve got a great community and the way we support each other through events like this is just further proof of that.”
Pool’s in progress In brief YARRA Ranges Council has released an update on the refurbishment of the Olinda pool, stating that plans to repair the community facility are “progressing well.” Council has appointed an expert in hydraulic design to coordinate the design as well as consult on water circulation, pumping and filtration. Tenders are currently open for the installation of the new liner. The redevelopment is being overseen by the Project Control Group,
made up of members of the Olinda community, Councillor Jason Callanan and council officers. They are working to ensure that the surrounding vegetation of the area will not impact on the structure of the pool shell. The pool was saved in November when council voted six to two to allocate $770,000 to repair and upgrade the pool, after a campaign within the community opposed its closure.
Struck pedestrian loses battle for life A LILYDALE man hit by a car in Coldstream earlier this month has died in hospital. Police believe the 54-year-old Lilydale man was crossing Maroondah Highway, near the intersection of Killara Road in Coldstream, about 10.30am on Thursday 12 March, when he was hit by a car. He sustained life-threatening injuries as a result, and was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital. He died on Friday 20 March. His death has been added to the road toll, and police will prepare a report for the coroner. As of Monday 23 March, the road toll stands at 66 deaths - five more than the same time last year.

Trapping plan hits at killer wasp “If you are unable to resolve the issues with your neighbour, you can report it to our health department, who will inspect the site and advise the land owner to destroy the nest.” Museum Victoria records show that the European wasp first came to mainland Victoria in the late 1970s. The bad news is that is has spread to most other states and, they say, it is here to stay. “Eradication is no longer an option,” they say on their website. The good news! “Despite early reports labelling it as a “Killer Wasp”, no human deaths have been recorded in Australia. In the meantime, Mr Grundy is taking a targeted approach, and has built a wire cage to fit over the boards to ensure birds and other wildlife aren’t caught in a sticky, and potentially, deadly trap. “The beauty of this is that it is cheap and accessible,” Mr Grundy said.

AS Yarra Ranges residents dodge and swipe their way through what is reportedly the worst European wasp season in 20 years, a Mount Evelyn resident is fighting back with a trap that is irresistible to the pests. Allan Grundy came up with the idea of trapping the feral, stinging insects after he noticed that food he puts out for native wildlife in his large garden was also bringing large numbers of wasps. The sticky glue boards are available commercially, but Mr Grundy said the trick was to put some cat or dog food in the centre to specifically target the wasps. “The things about this solution is that it’s very cost effective, as effective in keeping wasps controlled in particular parts of the garden,” he said. “The council will refer people to a pest controller, but a lot of people can’t afford that and therefore they ignore the problem,” he said. Yarra Ranges Council is indeed encouraging people
to eradicate the nests as a broader solution to the problem. Director, Environment and Engineeering, Mark Varmalis, said the council had received 324 requests to remove nests over February and March, and that 312 nests had been destroyed as a result. “Mild winter and summer weather conditions have caused an increase in wasps. This is a state-wide issue with many areas impacted,” he said. While council has responsibility for nests on council-owned land, Mr Vermalis said nests on private property were the responsibility of the land owner. He recommended that anyone who finds a nest contacts a pest control expert to assist with destroying it. “If you are aware of a European wasp nest on your neighbour’s property, we encourage you to talk to your neighbour about taking action to destroy the nest,” he said.

Monbulk’s sniff of sewerage By JESSE GRAHAM HUNDREDS of homes in Monbulk will be assessed for future sewerage connections, as consultations continue on the Monbulk Sewerage Project. Yarra Valley Water announced on 19 March that 900 properties in Monbulk had been identified by the council as needing more assessment to determine the need for sewerage services. The assessment follows an online consultation forum late last year, which drew around 830 visits to the specially-made site. YVW Managing Director, Pat McCafferty, said the forum asked for comments and feedback on reports from smaller consultations held in October 2014. “We asked what customers thought about the findings of the group consultations, the sewerage concepts presented and if there was anything else customers wanted to add,” he said. “We are currently in the investigation and planning stage of the project, and finishing our analysis to pick the best two options to bring back to the community.” Currently, half of Monbulk is serviced by a reticulated sewerage system, while the other relies largely on septic systems. The aim of the project is to connect these remaining properties to a main system, particularly as septic tanks can pose environmental threats when not properly maintained and serviced. Project Manager, Joanna Cooper, said that common issues raised by residents thus far in consultations included connection costs, impacts of construction and timing. “Broadly, the next steps for the project are community consultation, design, construction and call for connections, once the sewer is ready to use.” The type of sewerage system for the town has yet to be decided, as has approximate costs and timing. Ms Cooper said the next phase of consultations, set to begin in April, would present a short-list of sewerage options and gauge the town’s feedback. YARRA Valley Water has asked residents to reconsider what they flush down the toilet, in attempt to address an elephant in the room - literally. Wet wipes and similar “flushable” wipes have been causing headaches at Yarra Valley Water for years, according to Managing Director Pat McCafferty. In the Yarra Valley and Dandenongs alone, four tonnes of wet wipes are removed from the sewerage network every fortnight roughly the weight of the African elephant, the world’s largest land animal. The problem is, though wipes are labelled and marketed as “flushable”, they don’t degrade like toilet paper, and very easily cause blockages through the sewer network. The result can range from blockages that cost up to $1000 to remove and damage to pipes, through to sewage spills back onto properties. “If you have tree root intrusion into sewer pipes, quite often, you won’t have a problem with flows,” Mr McCafferty said. “But if anything is going down the toilet, like a wet wipe, that can wrap around the tree root, you get a blockage and sewage backing up into your house - nobody wants to experience a sewage spill in their property or in their house.” Mr McCafferty said that toilet paper generally broke down within
30 seconds once it was in the sewer system, but wet wipes were far more durable. The issue has gained worldwide attention, and Mr McCafferty said there might be light at the end of the tunnel, with the water industry and wet wipes industry representatives collaborating on a solution. At the crux of the issue is what is defined as “flushable”. “You can put anything down, but whether it’s going to degrade the way you want it is different,” Mr McCafferty said. “Sewerage treatment plants are designed to treat wastewater to a quality and a degree where it’s safe to release back into the environment. “Anything can be put down there, but then it becomes someone else’s problem, and it’s the community that pays.” Though YVW has invested in a machine to process wet wipes, Mr McCafferty said the root problem needed to be addressed, and his advice was simple - just put them in the bin. YVW’s website contains a list of items not to be flushed down the toilet or poured down the drain. More cycling, less bickering By JESSE GRAHAM CYCLING is an exhilarating form of exercise. Riding down hills, through back streets and even through Healesville’s buzzing main street, it’s great to experience towns in the valley and the hills on two wheels. But when it comes to discussing laws around cycling, much of the conversation gets bogged down in bickering. Every time the activity is mentioned or a new initiative is discussed, a dissenting voice isn’t too far away, protesting or recalling an anecdote about a time when cyclists did them wrong. And that’s fine, because people are perfectly entitled to see differently about issues and the way society is shaped. But conversations like these don’t just miss the point; they travel away from it at the speed it takes to type an aggressive Facebook comment. A bill was tabled by Eastern Metropolitan MLC, Samantha Dunn, last week, calling for a one-metre distance between cyclists and vehicles overtaking, with a greater distance in areas with higher speed limits. Cycling groups immediately supported the bill, while groups such as the RACV, very rightly, questioned the bill’s necessity - the current law encourages a “sufficient“ distance to be kept, anyway. But the key here is quantifying something that, currently, is completely subjective.

I’ve encountered drivers whose idea of “sufficient“ distance is simply leaving enough centimetres to not clip a cyclist with a side-mirror. Cyclists very often are seen as an inconvenience to be dealt with on the roads. This is where attitudes need to change before meaningful steps can be made to improve conditions. In areas such as the Dandenong Ranges, groups of cyclists can often make it difficult for drivers to get through the hills, without slowing and waiting for a safe area to pass, which understandably frustrates some drivers. But this inconvenience of waiting for a safe area to pass is far outweighed by the importance of keeping all road users safe. Rash overtaking and not leaving appropriate distance puts riders at risk of being injured or killed, just so someone can shave minutes off their trip. People who ride bikes, through taxation and council rates, pay for the roads just like motorists, and are just as entitled to use the roads, but are more vulnerable than any other road user. It follows that measures to protect these users, such as a more stringent definition of a safe passing distance, should be at the very least thoughtfully considered and discussed. After all, for motorists, minimum safe passing distances are a matter of convenience, and their opinions and feelings matter in that regard. But for cyclists, the issue is literally life or death.

The majority of farmed animals are raised in barren sheds, concrete pens and wire cages in which they can scarcely move.‘Canned’ animals have space to exercise. Factory farmed animals never breathe fresh air or feel the warmth of the sun.‘Canned’ animals are raised in the open, can breathe fresh air and feel the sun. Practically all farmed animals are agonisingly mutilated - beaks burned off, castrated, tail docked, mulesed, branded, de-horned, etc. ‘Canned’ animals are never mutilated. Farmed animals endure long, frightening hours of transportation - in freezing cold and searing heat - to the slaughterhouse. ‘Canned’ animals aren’t trucked anywhere. In our killing factories, all farmed animals meet a terrifying and brutal death. Many are reportedly still conscious when they are cut apart - piece by piece. Many chickens are still conscious when submerged in the scalding tank. And let’s not forget fish whose eyes balloon and swim bladders burst when dragged from the depths in nets. On board the trawlers they slowly suffocate. Crustaceans are mercilessly boiled to death? ‘Canned’ animals meet a relatively quick and painless death. I agree that we should condemn canned hunting - but let us also condemn the killing of animals for flesh, milk and eggs that we have absolutely no need of. As a vegan of 36 years, I can vouch for the fact that killing animals for food is every bit as unjustifiable as killing for sport. Jenny Moxham, Monbulk.
Clarke for transport I AM an independent candidate for the Lyster Ward by-election and I am standing for many improvements to our community. I have found the big issue that has wide popular support is bus services. While this is more of a state issue, our local region suffers badly from poor bus services and I

believe that we must act strongly and quickly on all levels to get this issue resolved. It is a scandal that we pay hundreds of millions of dollars for bus services that are hardly used outside school peak times. Every time one of those 40-seater Ventura buses passes you by, take a look inside and see if anyone is on them. They are paid for the kilometres they travel and have no incentive to improve the patronage. Bus drivers have told me that fare avoidance is close to 100 per cent. This means that there is hardly any income received for bus services. I have a plan that has been well received by all I’ve spoken with through my local campaigning over the last eight months. That is to replace these larger 40-seat buses with 10-seater buses that run every 10 minutes between centres, in both directions, one each way. Each centre will be linked by another pair of buses that also go each way. This will provide a matrix of links to each of the towns in the Dandenongs, enabling travellers to go anywhere. The cost model is easily explained: $1 per ride with 10 services per hour (2x5trips) and 10 people on each of these buses will earn $100 per hour. The wages for two drivers would be $40 an hour for each and the remaining $20 per hour is for fuel, maintenance and capital depreciation. Eventually fuel should evolve into electric hybrid vehicles; these are currently available. It would mean the establishment of solar powered battery charging stations, which is infrastructure needed for the electric cars of the future. These smaller buses can support the following needs: • Public transport everywhere and at all hours; • Tourism that can bring anyone from Melbourne by train and buses to help boost our small businesses without creating car congestion and parking problems; • Ecotourism with onboard video and guides promoting appreciation of our magnificent environment; • A dial-a-bus service for those who cannot easily get to the bus stops; and • Emergency evacuation off the mountain when threats like fire occur. Crime stats on the rise By PETER DOUGLAS FAMILY violence and drug-related crimes continue to be a major concern in the Yarra Ranges, with statistics showing a rise in offences. The Crime Statistics Agency last week released its annual data for last year, with the total offence count in the local government area breaking the 7000 barrier. Among the most concerning,
though, is the prevalence of family violence or family-related incidents, which has risen from 756 in 2010 to 1373. Drugs-related offences followed suit. Of particular note is the cultivation or manufacture of drugs, which rose from 21 counts to 63 last year. This followed a major increase in drug-use and possession offences, rising from 267 in 2012 to 326.
While it’s important to remember these are only the reported cases, such statistics give an indication of the extent. Crime Statistics Agency Chief Statistician, Fiona Dowsley, said the report offers valuable insight for the community. “The Crime Statistics Agency’s goal is to make crime statistics available to the Victorian community in a clear and accessible way,” Ms Dows-
ley said. Other areas of concern for lawenforcement and the community are sexual offences, with 234 recorded. There were five homicide and related offences in the Yarra Ranges. Meanwhile, over the same period, Cardinia Shire’s total offence count increased from 589 to 1222. While in Murrindindi Shire, the count increased from 58 to 142.

Stateside, the CSA statistics show total offences were up 4.3 per cent, with the biggest area of concern being sexual assaults, which were up 9.5 per cent. Funds are found for young drivers By JESSE GRAHAM A PROGRAM that helps youths build their driving experience will continue in the Yarra Ranges for another four years, after a funding announcement earlier this month. On 8 March, Road Safety Minister, Luke Donnellan, announced the L2P Learner Driver Mentor Program would receive government funding for the next four years. The program pairs young people with driver ‘mentors’, who take them on driving lessons and help them to build their 120 hours of ex-
perience where they may not have been able to do so before. It has been so popular in the Yarra Ranges that there is currently a waiting list for young people to take part. Yarra Ranges mayor Maria McCarthy said the program was “immensely important and successful” in the area, and that she was thrilled that the funding would continue. “It helps disadvantaged young people overcome some of the barriers they face, by helping them get a licence, which, in turn, can help with employment and avoid social isolation,” she said.
Dandenong Ranges resident and L2P mentor, Andrew Hicks, said the program was essential for young people who might not be able to get proper learner driving experiences at home. “I think it’s fantastic that there is a program that enables kids to get the hours they need before getting their licence,” he said. “To just have the requirement to get 120 hours without having some sort of program available, that would not be the way,” Mr Hicks said. One of his students, Emma Graham, agreed,
and said she would only have half an hour in her logbook if she couldn’t be part of the program - she currently has 74. Around 3000 people across the state make use of the L2P program, with 63 programs run across 71 of 79 municipalities. Yarra Ranges Council, which runs the L2P program through its youth services branch, is looking for volunteer drivers to be mentors in the program. Oh deer - cull is on again as Bambi heads for hills By JESSE GRAHAM A PARKS Victoria program to cull deer numbers in the Dandenong Ranges and Yarra Valley has come back for another year, after the inaugural year was labelled as a success. Parks Victoria’s Deer Control Program began its second year in midMarch, aiming to reduce the environmental impact of fallow and sambar deer on sensitive habitat and native plants. Under this year’s program, volunteer members of the Australian Deer Association and the Sporting Shooters Association of Australia have
been authorised to kill 220 deer from the Dandenong Ranges National Park, Yellingbo Nature Conservation Reserve and Warramate Hills Conservation Reserve in Gruyere. Last year was the first year the program had been run, and 100 deer were culled across the three sites. Parks Victoria District Manager of the Dandenong Ranges and Yarra Ranges District, Craig Bray, said the organisation was “very happy” with the progress of the program, but that deer continued to be a problem in the area. “There is still evidence of deer
within the parks, but we are seeing positive signs of environmental recovery and revegetation in areas that have previously been damaged by deer activity,” he said. The program contained a number of strict safety procedures last year, including closing the parks to the public during shooting, not shooting on weekends, public holidays or on school holidays, ensuring one shooter was active at any time and warning nearby residents - these measures will continue this year. Environmental groups, such as Friends of the Helmeted Honeyeat-
er and Sherbooke Lyrebird Survey Group, have come out in support of the program, due to deer damaging endangered animal habitats with the thrashing of antlers on trees and damaging flora with their hooves. Friends of the Helmeted Honeyeater president, Robert Anderson said the group had been advocates of a deer control program for many years. “Early signs of the program appear to be very positive, with considerably less damage to areas that have been revegetated then would otherwise be expected if no control had
taken place,” he said. “Loss of habitat and the destruction of revegetated areas have held back the recovery program of the Helmeted Honeyeater - a program that continues to decrease deer numbers is most welcome.” Mr Bray said the program would continue for as long as “deer were having a negative impact on sensitive vegetation in the three parks”. Time to register pets CARDINIA Council is reminding residents to register their pet or renew their registration before 10 April. All dogs and cats over the age of three months must be registered with council every year. Pets must also be micro-chipped before they are registered. Council’s Compliance Services Co-ordinator Shannon Maynard said dog or cat owners had a responsibility to register and micro-chip their pet, and ensure it complied with other council regulations. “The registration fee is a small price to pay to know council can bring your four-legged friend home if they ever get lost,” he said. “Close to 19,000 cats and dogs were registered in Cardinia Shire in
2014 and Pakenham had the most animals registered - 7910 in 2014. The oldest registered animal in the shire is 19 years old. “It’s interesting to see what residents name their pets. Clearly there are quite a few fans of the movie ‘Milo and Otis’; Cardinia Shire has 65 pets named Milo and four animals named Otis.” The owner of an unregistered dog or cat over the age of three months risks receiving a fine from council. By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM MONBULK MP James Merlino joined more than 50 Year 7 students at Monbulk College last week to mark the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence. More than 800,000 students across the country took part in the fifth annual event, which encourages students to be ‘bully stoppers’ by taking a stand against bullying in schools. Listening to the student presentations before taking part in an anti-bullying workshop and game, Mr Merlino
said bullying was common but could be curbed. “Bullying is a serious issue that affects up to one in five young people - it can happen anytime, anywhere and to anyone,” he said. “The National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence is a timely reminder that we need to stand up to bullying and cyberbullying, and be Bully Stoppers.” Clinical psychologist Andrew Fuller also attended the event, addressing students on the impact that one person taking a stand against bullying could make. Focusing particularly on cyberbully-
ing, he said social media users should show caution in choosing what they shared. “It’s really important to stay safe online and think about what you’re posting check your privacy settings for all social media sites, and before you post something, ask yourself whether you’re comfortable with strangers seeing and sharing it,” he said. “When it comes to cyber bullying, generally it’s best not to respond. Save and store the content, and talk to an adult. You can also block or delete the bully from your contact list.”
He advised parents to closely monitor their children’s internet usage. “If your child is being cyber bullied, it’s good to stay involved. Work out strategies together, and look on it as an opportunity to strengthen your relationship.” Mr Merlino agreed that a collaborative approach should be used in eradicating bullying. “Everyone has a role to play in stopping bullying - if you see someone being bullied, speak up and offer them support, or tell an adult,” he said.

‘Safety education’ needed for farmers and winemakers By PETER DOUGLAS WORKSAFE Victoria is imploring primary producers and vignerons to take heed of their health and safety advice. After releasing data last week on work-place injuries in the region, WorkSafe said these sectors were among the region’s riskiest industries, which could benefit from further education. The agriculture industry, in particular, is a significant employer in the region, with an abundance of fruit growers and dairy farms. WorkSafe Regional Operations manager, Ian Matthews, said the issue needed to be addressed promptly. “We’re continuing to see injuries caused by body-stressing injuries, where workers are hit by a moving object,” he said. “Slips, trips and falls also remain an issue.” Mr Matthews said employers needed to consider challenges unique to the region, such as its transient workforce. “Seasonal agriculture work sees increased activity during peak periods, including many casuals and workers who speak English as a second language,” he said.
“The need for solid training and induction programs, and contractor management systems, are vital.” Over the past six financial years, the data shows there have been 176 claims awarded, costing in excess of $10 million. For the Yarra Ranges local government area, there were 31 WorkSafe claims awarded in the 2014 financial year, costing more than $2 million. Meanwhile, the reports of injury remained high. The data shows there were 80 reports of lacerations, and 116 reports of ligament, joint or muscle damage. The most prevalent, though, was injury to the musculoskeletal system, with 188 instances reported. Also, there were seven reports of burns. Mr Matthews said he would continue to work with Yarra Ranges employers. “A key goal will be to visit new workplaces to ensure they’re equipped with all tools necessary to make informed decisions about health and safety,” he said. DANDENONG Ranges Open Studios will next month celebrate the region’s rich and vibrant artistic heritage. In an interactive and eclectic weekend event, the studios will offer visitors the unique experience of meeting artists in their working studio environments during a single weekend. More than 36 local artists and art collectives are involved, working across a diverse range of mediums, including ceramics, textiles, painting, illustration, performance, woodwork and steel art. The event is one of the most anticipated in the local cultural calendar, attracting almost 5000 art-minded visitors and tourists from across Victoria. Project co-ordinator, Amy Middleton, said the event was unique and had proven highly popular. “It’s a unique opportunity to have a peek inside artists’ creative practices and visit hidden studios nestled among the stunning forest of the Dandenong Ranges,” she said. “It is in these curious and inspirational environments that the artists’ creative practice truly comes to life.” Now in its 12th year, two new categories of artists has
Energy, passion in dance event AUSTRALIAN contemporary dancer and choreographer, Joseph Simons, will kick off Dance Tracks with his performance of First Things First at Montrose Town Centre on 16 April. Dance Tracks is a Yarra Ranges Council initiative, in partnership with Burrinja and Ausdance Victoria, dedicated to developing a lasting culture of dance performance and participation. Dance Tracks includes a program of dance showing across 10 venues with Simons’ performance at Montrose the first of many. Simons is a former Australian Ballet School student, Tanja Liedke Fellowship winner and Dance Australia Magazines
‘Dancer to Watch’. Simons has performed across Australia, Europe and the US in productions for Chunky Moves, Monty Python’s Spamalot, Cats, The Flying Fruit Fly Circus and Miss Saigon. Yarra Ranges mayor Maria McCarthy, urged the community to get involved. “We want the community to see a dance show, try a class, make a dance and get dancing,” she said. “Joseph Simons’ First Thing First is perfect for the first performance for the Dance Tracks program. “He will bring energy and passion to his performance and hopefully inspire others to get involved in dance in some way.”
The Australian Stage described his show First Things First as “hysterically funny and excruciatingly accurate”. Join Simons as he explores the theme of first times in his one-man show of mind-blowing physicality, unique charm and wit. Local dance students have a unique opportunity to dance with Simons and learn about the history of contemporary dance. A special one-off workshop presented in partnership with Ausdance Victoria is happening at Montrose Town Centre on Saturday, 12 April. Chappie makes us happy FROM Neil Blomkamp, director of District 9, ‘Chappie’ is another solid sci-fi film for the new year. Decon (Dev Patel), a corporate inventor in Johannesburg, secretly creates a sentient robot named Chappie (Sharlto Copley). Chappie is sweet and childlike, but is corrupted by a bunch of small-time gangsters. With just his voice, Copley delivers an arresting performance as Chappie. The robot is like a naive kid, led astray in a harsh world. Your heart reaches out to
him and his strutting behaviour is both amusing and sad. Chappie’s gangster ‘family’, whom we follow through much of the film, are annoying and pretty reprehensible at first. You’ll need a high tolerance for this kind of character, even with the redemptive arcs they undergo and Yolandi’s motherly care for Chappie. Much of the suspense is generated from Chappie’s exploitation and the bright, evolving way he views the world, which makes up for the vague threat of his draining battery (and some underdevel-
oped ideas about consciousness). The atmosphere is squalid but with tinges of magic, the energetic action is gloriously visceral and the supporting cast excels with their short screen-time; Patel is dedicated and fatherly as Deon, and Hugh Jackman is riveting as an unhinged, scheming rival engineer. Balancing grit, dark laughs and insane action with a poignant, sensitive and unconventional character study, ‘Chappie’ will make you think twice about mistreating your electronics. - Seth Hynes

Most recently, the nine-yearold spent four hours at his ‘$2 table’ at the Safeway in Belgrave, where he raised more than $450. This adds to his amazing work in raising money for the charity You Are My Sunshine, which helps to fund research into neuroblastoma. This is an aggressive form of childhood cancer that mostly affects children under five. Archie’s fund-raising helper, Helen MacInnes, said her friend lost her daughter, Kahlilla, 5, to neuroblastoma, which is why Archie selected this charity. “Archie has raised over $2000 already and aims to raise $3000 by the end of this month,” she said. “He will be shaving his head at Tecoma Primary School’s last assembly for the term, in front of the whole school.” The head shave will take place at the school this Friday. “Archie was inspired by a

SUSTAINABLE living and buying local were two key messages at a documentary screening in Upwey last week. The Hills Food Frontier (THFF) gathered a full theatre of people at Upwey’s Burrinja Theatre on Thursday 19 March for a screening of a new documentary, Fair Food. Featuring interviews with farmers around the country, community members and academics, Fair Food focuses on new approaches to food production and distribution, circumventing supermarket systems. These new approaches attempt to connect people with fresh, locally-made food, which farmers are able to be paid a fair sum for. Documentary creator Nick Rose told the Mail that he
hoped the screening would help hills residents to look at how they get their food. “We’re hoping that people become informed about what’s happening with the Australian food system ... knowing local producers, opting out of the big, industrial duopoly system and getting involved politically, pushing their council and the State Government to make changes,” he said. He said there had been a strong, positive response to each screening of Fair Food, with around a dozen across the country so far. Interviewee in Fair Food and free-range pig and cattle farmer Tammi Jonas said the documentary also had a message of support for farmers, which she hoped would be carried on in the Yarra Valley and Dandenongs. “I would say the first thing
they (farmers) can do is talk among themselves and then, broader, beyond themselves,” Ms Jonas said. “Talk to other farmers about how they’re reducing their inputs. “Through lots of interaction with other farmers, seeing what’s possible and supporting each other with these kinds of practices, including direct sales and transitioning to that model - the connection with the people who eat your food changes how you grow your food.” The screening was organised by The Hills Food Frontier, which posted on its Facebook page that it is able to lend its copy of Fair Food to individuals and groups of less than 10 people for a donation. Dean powers through By PETER DOUGLAS FERNTREE Gully businessman Craig Dean last weekend finished first in class, and third outright, in the second round of the 2015 Australian Tarmac RallyChampionship at Lake Mountain. Dean and his co-driver, Jenny Cole, brought their 2013 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 home less than a minute behind second-place getters, Clinton Arentz (Queensland) and his dual Australian RallyChampion co-driver Dale Moscatt (NSW) in their 2009 Mitsubishi Evo X. The event in Victoria’s Yarra Ranges National Park was run in perfect conditions over the weekend (20-22March). The route was made up of 16 closed road special stages, run from Marysville to Cumberland Junction (on the Warburton/Woods Point Road), as well as up and down the access road between Marysville and the summit of Lake Mountain. South Australian couple, Tristan and Kate Catford, and their 2006 Mitsubishi Evo IX finished ahead of Arentz and Moscatt, with all three also taking victory in their respective classes. Dean was enthusiastic about his result, which was a surprise to some competitors. The big Mustang is not nearly as nimble around the tight, twisty mountain roads as its smaller four-wheel-drive rivals.
“Sunday was a lot better for us than Saturday because the stages were longer, which gave us a chance to really settle into the car,” Dean said. “Once you feel comfortable, you can go really hard. “This car has plenty of power but it takes a bit to pull it up because it is so heavy. “It’s a car you have to drive, but it’s also incredibly forgiving and it worked really well - we had a trouble-free run, thanks to all the hard work by our crew.” Dean said the event was enjoyable. “The roads were great, the car was great and the crew was great,” he said. “I have to say my co-driver Jenny was fantastic. “And I think I did an okay kind of job aside from taking a bit of a wrong turn at one point - I really must learn the difference between my lefts and rights.” All three of the leading crews are registered for the four events that will make up this year’s ATRC, so their battle will continue at the next round that, due to the winter ski season fast approaching, is not until the weekend of 3-4 October (Great Tarmac Rally). The 2015 ‘grand final’ (Snowy River Sprint) will be run in the hills above Lakes Entrance in East Gippsland on 5-6 December.

Reserve courts more netball players By KATH GANNAWAY AFTER more than a quarter of a century in the planning, netballers from around Yarra Ranges are enjoying the game on modern, wellplanned courts at Pinks Reserve in Kilsyth. Grading matches for the Lilydale Yarra Valley Netball Association were in full swing on Saturday with the association’s website announcing more than 230 team entries for the winter 2015 season. This is up by 13 on last year’s winter season, and 57 more than five years ago, showing a healthy interest in the game at all levels across
the shire, and prompting LYVNA to declare ... “Our move to Pinks Reserve has arrived just in time”. More than 20 clubs are part of the LYVNA including Mount Evelyn which has 17 teams entered for winter and including Yarra Valley clubs from Yarra Glen with five, Worawa Aboriginal College with four, Seville, seven, Healesville, two, Coldstream, nine, Montrose, 18, Lilydale, 15, and Mooroolbark, 10. Mount Evelyn Under 15s were among the teams undergoing grading matches on the new courts on Saturday, defeating Mooroolbark 22 to 7.

Golf pairs meet their matches By DENNIS FULLER LAST Saturday at Emerald Golf Club, pairs were formed to compete for the rights to advance in the 4BBB match play championship. The top eight pairs are rated and face each other across the 18 holes to progress to the next round. As has been the case for a few years, it was Ken Sumsion (25) who chose well with partner Dean Shannon (17) when they came in at the front of the pack with 47 stableford points. This puts them at number one seeds in the draw and a chance to play the 8th ranked pair. Broc Reynolds (14) and Peter Clowes (17) followed them home with 45 points, Ben Balfour (17) and Dennis Fuller (16) were next with 44, followed by Mike Litchfield (12) and Ian Scott (24) with 43 points who drew with Peter Glasscock (14) and John Carvill (21) who also carded 43. Shannon was nearest the pin on the 4th, Reynolds the 7th, Balfour the 12th, Leigh Morison the 13th and Dennis Fuller swooped on the pro pin dosh on the 18th. The leaders in the ladies comp were Josephine Krummenacher and Phillipa Crossley followed at a reasonable distance by Jennifer Marsh and Aileen Ecclestone. On Wednesday, the Old and Feeble Golfers rolled into the club to play a round of stableford with some tricky scoring possibilities. Weaving through the fine print were Sepp Krummenacher (21) and Gerran Wright (32) who waded in with 48 stableford points. Peter Clowes (18) was next with 44 while Leigh Morison (18) managed 43.

And it was perfect By JAMIE STRUDLEY YARRA Ranges Athletics club’s final round of the summer was held in near perfect conditions. An excellent turnout of athletes took to the track in search of personal bests in the club’s “choose your event” day. The day also represented the final round of little athletics for under-15 athletes this year and they will now move onto the senior ranks. It was great to see James Laven, Emily
Noonan, Amy Veenendaal, Lateisha Willis, Jess Ford, Heidi Mann, Tailor Pace and Chloe Leenen make the most of it by having fun in their unique costumes on the day. The club looks forward to recognising their achievements at a presentation evening on 11 April, and seeing them in Yarra Ranges Athletics colours again next season. Next week, the club has 24 athletes competing at the state Little
Athletics track and field championships, at Lakeside Stadium over the weekend. Good luck to all athletes. The Australian open age track and field championships are being held next weekend in Brisbane. Good luck to Veida Somerville, representing the club at the championships in the 3000m steeplechase. The cross-country season starts on 11 April, with the club annual meeting and Little Athletics pre-
