A HANDICAPPED Pakenham man has called for better access and improved safety at one of the town’s busiest level crossings. Rick Crowe was injured in a freak jumping castle accident in December 2012, and the father of one has called on the State Government and relevant agencies to improve access for pedestrians when crossing Racecourse Road, in what he describes as the “neglected part of town”. “There is no way to get across the railway crossing without getting on the road,” he said. “It’s not very safe. “We also use a play centre in Bald Hill Road and there are no footpaths. If the weather is bad we have to use the road too. “In and around Main Street where it meets John Street, it can be really steep to get across in your wheelchair. “And in and around the train station, and the other side of the train station (is difficult). There’s a lot of gravel, it’s very poor access for disabled people.” While Mr Crowe thought access was first class around the emerging shopping precinct in Lakeside, the older areas of Pakenham were hard work for people with disability issues. “They’ve forgotten about the older end of town,” he said. “It’s a neglected part of town, especially around Racecourse Road.” Public Transport Victoria did not respond to the Gazette’s request for a comment. Disabled people with access issues are encouraged to join a monthly Pakenham advisory group. The Cardinia Access and Inclusion Advisory Committee meet the third Wednesday of every month at Services Central. For more information call 1300 787 624.

SES crews on their toes By BEN CAMERON THE Pakenham SES unit responded to 11 calls for assistance following a major thunderstorm on Saturday night. A crew of 14 worked throughout the night in wet and windy conditions from 9.45pm, with the unit able to answer all calls by Sunday morning at 3am, spanning a large area from Berwick to Bunyip. “The most dangerous job would have been three cars crushed in a driveway in Berwick,” unit spokesperson Shayne Honey said. Volunteers then headed to Emerald to assist in a clean-up operation in the hills area.

Victim in theft of faith A LYNBROOK resident has turned the other cheek after catching a hampton park teenager trying to steal his bike. When Alastair Nicholson arrived home last week he was astonished to see a young boy riding his bike down the street. When Mr Nicholson stopped him the young boy apologised and hopped off the bike. Then Mr Nicholson, in an astonishing act of trust and goodwill, let the boy borrow another of his bikes so he could get home. “He had the right attitude, gave me a smile and said ‘I’m sorry’,” Mr Nicholson said. Mr Nicholson said he may have considered contacting the police if the boy reacted differently. He said the teen had been caught on his home’s CCTV which would have captured him entering the property to take the bike, which was actually broken. “He came up on the side of my property and took it,” he said.

“I said ‘mate, see those red dots, they indicate that the camera’s filming. I’ve got you on film’.” The boy rode off after they exchanged phone numbers. “He sent me a text half an hour later saying ‘hey, mate, I’m the guy who stole your bike, I got home safe’,” Mr Nicholson said. The next day, the young boy returned the bike which Mr Nicholson said he bought on Ebay. “I expected him to return it and wouldn’t have lent it to him if it was worth a lot,” he said. Mr Nicholson said this is not the first time he has people breaking into his property. However, “I’ve never actually caught someone in the act of stealing before,” he said.

A dirty habit THE reason why graffiti is on the increase is simple - the city does not promote the tollfree graffiti hotline, or email address to report graffiti or that graffiti will be removed at no direct expense to the landholder for free from private, commercial and public property. It is as simple as taking a photo and emailing it via a smartphone to casey@ums.com. au or via a freecall on 1800 826 325 with the location. It is the best policy in Australia. I ask council per head of population what is the number of graffiti reports now compared to say 2008 when we had a different councillors, one in particular, very active on the issue. Has Casey stopped recouping clean-up costs from these vandals? Now that was a deterrent ensuring vandals paid for the clean up of their mess, and reimbursed the city for clean-up costs. Has council stopped taking reports of graffiti? It is obvious no-one is reporting graffiti; it is left for months. Casey looks dirty and is encouraging crime through neglect, the same way New York went after Mayor Giuliani left office and Onkaparinga and Gossnells councils did after key councillors and staff moved on. Promote the graffiti hotline, engage with those on the road like real estate agents, cab drivers, council’s 1000-plus staff, schools, bus drivers, community groups, locals - ask them to report one tag a week. Re- implement the 'if you spray, you pay campaign’ and finally look to local company Tripwire, as an addition to council efforts. This company is successfully working with police in the USA, and apprehending vandals. Casey, only a few years ago was praised as among a world leader and graffiti-free! Look back to what was being done. Nothing has changed with the vandals. They are simply spraying anything they choose. What has changed is Casey Council’s lack of dedication to remove graffiti. Casey has a policy in place that mirrors what other cities suc-

Casey Council has changed from being pro-active to having a slow, reactive, expensive removal service ... but it does not have to remain so. Julia Welham, Lynbrook.

What value life? THERE has been quite a lot in the news in recent weeks about whether or not killer sharks should be hunted and killed. What about convicted drug dealers? Should they face the death penalty? I’m sure we all feel deeply for the two Australians in Bali at this time as it seems more than likely that they will be executed. I cannot possibly know what they and their families must be going through and my heart goes out to them. The method of execution is horrific. If they are executed, maybe it will serve as a strong warning to other young people considering dealing drugs overseas. We do not have the death penalty in Australia. Or do we? Thousands of unborn babies face the death penalty in Australia every year. They have done nothing wrong and they have no chance at life. Letters IT IS absolutely appalling that Casey councillor Wayne Smith was approved yet another ratepayer funded trip to the United States to pick up new tips on tackling graffiti (Graffiti Lessons, News, 19 February). This one is estimated to cost ratepayers $6500. How many of these trips does he need to take before the issue of graffiti is solved? Meanwhile, Casey residents who have property backing onto parks and reserves still do not receive any assistance from local government to share the cost of replacing damaged old fences. I’m sure Wayne Smith’s flight and accommodation expenses would have covered half the cost of replacing a few fences and possibly have saved a Casey pensioner a fair bit of pension. Re: US graffiti lessons A more cost-efficient way of dealing with graffiti would have been for the Mayor of Casey to call for public submissions on how to deal with the problem. Local solutions already exist for tackling graffiti. Why hasn’t the Mayor of Casey given ratepayers the opportunity to recommend ideas for eliminating the problem? Moreover, why didn’t my Four Oaks Ward councillors, councillors Kaplon and Crestani, like the mayor, make an effort to consult with the local community? The gender pay gap is at 17.1 per cent and women in the top levels of management are getting paid up to 45 per cent less than their male colleagues. VicHealth’s National Community Attitudes Survey on Violence Against Women, released late last year, revealed some worrying statistics about Australians’ attitudes to gender equality in public life. Twenty-seven per cent of Australians believe that men make better political leaders than women, a 4 per cent increase since 2012. Twelve per cent of Australians believe that when jobs are scarse that men have more right to a job than a woman. And 5 per cent of Australians believe university education is more important for a boy than a girl. VicHealth focuses on preventing violence against women because it is a significant and preventable contributor to ill health. Over the last decade, we’ve built an irrefutable body of evidence on the health impacts and causes of violence against women. Sexist and violent behaviour is learned and it can be unlearned. Remote medicine’s real appeal By LACHLAN MOORHEAD THE Tanzanian medical centre was one room in the middle of nowhere. The tiny building, known as Daraja Mbili, had no running water and regular power outages. It was here that 35-year-old volunteer paramedic Melinda Robinson, from Narre Warren North, worked to treat ill and pregnant Africans who had nowhere else to turn. “In October last year I volunteered in Tanzania for one month and was blown away by the conditions in which they worked,” Melinda said. “The clinic I was working in was simply a building with no running water and limited electricity due to daily power outages. “Their resources were so limited that they would perform HIV test without wearing gloves so as to save the gloves for delivering babies. “When a baby was born the rim of the glove was used to clamp the cord. Skin was not cleaned or swabbed with an alcohol wipe prior to immunisations being administered.” Despite these conditions Melinda gave credit to the Tanzanian health care workers who continued to work as hard as they could in these incredibly restrictive conditions. To further help these doctors and

their patients Melinda will again be leaving for Africa in March for three months this time, in order to again help the sick in any way she can. Her latest trip will see Melinda volunteer in both Uganda and Tanzania, where she will also spend time with the Tanzanian Flying Medical Service. As part of the service Melinda will be flown into the desert where small village are scattered across the landscape and cut off from regular medical treatment. “The Flying Medical Service takes volunteers with them to help - there are a lot of maternal health issues but we’re also on call for any emergency evacuations that are needed,” she said. “There are a lot of Masai villages, kind of equivalent to our (Australian) Indigenous people. We give them medical help they otherwise wouldn’t be getting. “It’s pretty rewarding to be able to contribute to that.” While some of the villages have pre-arranged sites to conduct medical procedures, Melinda admitted limited resources often saw operations carried out underneath the wind of an aeroplane - sometimes the only source of protection from the heat of the sun. “You get a greater appreciation for the Australian health system,” Melinda said.

Melinda shares a laugh with the Tanzanian children during her trip to Africa in October where she she volunteered as a paramedic. “Over there we work with such limited supplies, gloves, the little things we take for granted. “We see kids still getting immunised over there and you’ve got to admire what the medical staff do.

“It’s so different when you see them working with limited supplies.” In order for the African medical staff to be provided with more supplies and resources, Melinda will be holding a barbecue fund-raiser at Woolworths in

EVEN at 16 years of age, nothing was stopping Richard Williams. THE aspiring stunt actor, now 27 and from Berwick, would get a lift to the nearest station, catch the train to Southern Cross, and then the V-Line out to Geelong where he would practise with a specialised stunt group. Richard’s aunt used to be an animal wrangler for film and TV, and he was bitten by the same bug at a young age. “She got me started, I would ask her about stunt acting and she put me onto a stunt acting group in Geelong,” he said.

“Once I was 18, I got my stunt certification.” And from there, Richard went on to do work for a range of films and TV shows, including his involvement in the Robert De Niro and Jason Statham film, Killer Elite, which was released in 2011. Richard said stunt work could be sporadic, but still required peak physical fitness all-year around. “If you want work when it does come up, you have to be ready,” he said. “Sometimes, it’s just a phone call away ‘are you available tomorrow?’ and you have to be ready to go.” It’s no surprise that to keep

in top condition Richard now runs regular Endurance Boot Camps in Berwick, which he started up just over a year ago. Now having enlisted more trainers to help with the workload, Richard still has time to spare for his stunt work. “I was just doing average personal training and stunt work, but at the gym I saw a missing link in the way people were treated and approached,” he said. “I wanted to make the focus about gaining things, not losing things. “People say they want to ‘lose’ weight but I wanted them to ‘gain’ fitness and ‘gain’ strength.

“You don’t want to operate on negative goals; you need to look for positives. “Once I had those values in place, I was able to get things expanding quickly.” Richard also said his boot camps allowed participants the unique opportunity to learn how to train others, and become trainers for free. “When I was at the gym I noticed that people weren’t worried about new trainers, I offer a traineeship for people and they cost nothing,” he said. “I train them to be trainers, I teach them the structure to run a boot camp. “The stronger the industry the better it is for me.”

Great escape By LACHLAN MOORHEAD AS A quiet kid growing up in Melbourneâ€™s outer south-east, Paul Cosentino was too shy to even stand up in front of his friends in class. Now the illusionist, known famously as â€˜Cosentinoâ€™ and who lives in Endeavour Hills, has carved a career out of standing on stage and performing to thousands. The escapologistâ€™s star soared after a career-defining turn in the 2011 series of Australiaâ€™s Got Talent, and he continues to move from strength to strength. But having battled with reading and writing difficulties from an early age, Cos, as he is known to his friends, admitted that he never would have foreseen himself becoming a magician. â€œNot at all, if you look back, thereâ€™s no way this shy kid from Casey could get up in front of the classroom, now hereâ€™s a guy performing in front of thousands,â€? Cos, 32, said. â€œAnd broadcast on TV to millions worldwide.â€? Cosentino grew up in Lysterfield after moving with his family from Dandenong North when he was seven. The family had shifted from having neighbours close on either side to an open block with the nearest neighbouring house still a short walk away. It was here where Cosentino first discovered the world of magic. With no one near his Lyster-

field home to distract him, Cos honed his craft. â€œIt gave me time to practice my magic and to experiment with building different things, part of that allowed me to get creative,â€? he said. â€œI think the fact that my neighbours were still a good walk away, and growing up there where I was to some degree isolated and kept to myself, gave me time to develop my skills.â€? Introduced to magic at the age of 12, Cosentino said he was quite a late-comer to the art form, but credits a book he borrowed from the library with leading him down the rabbit hole. â€œI borrowed my first magic book from the Casey Library, it was an encyclopedia of magic. I canâ€™t make this stuff up,â€? Cos laughed. â€œI was a very shy kid and had a lot of learning difficulties. I picked up this magic book full with Vaudevillian posters of magicians, but I didnâ€™t want to sit and read it in the library. â€œSo Mum, who used to be school principal at Berwick Lodge, read the magic book to me and I started to break down the words and analyse them. â€œI would break it down bit by bit, it was instructional learning. â€œI came to understand what each word meant and I overcame this huge stumbling block in my life. â€œIt all started in that library.â€? Cos continued to study magic throughout his high school

years and began earning money through picking up gigs here and there. â€œI was making pocket money out of shows, while other kids were working retail or at McDonaldâ€™s, I was running about town doing shows at schools,â€? Cosentino said. When he reached 17 the aspiring illusionist auditioned for the Cirque Du Soleil show, Saltimbanco, when they started looking for cast members in Australia in the late â€™90s. Cosentino ended up knocking back the five-year contract offered to him by the circus, but the experience reassured him that his future lay in magic. Fast forward to 2015 and Cosentinoâ€™s TV show is broadcast to 40 countries around the world, while he recently finished a live tour of South-East Asia and North America, with Australia next. â€œAs soon as I overcame those huge learning issues, magic gave me a whole new sense of confidence and selfworth,â€? Cosentino said. â€œIt was organic; it became ingrained in my DNA to some degree. â€œWhen you perform a trick and create wonderment or awe, itâ€™s very powerful stuff. Like a drug, or an addiction. â€œSeeing the audienceâ€™s reaction is very potent, even for a split second they question things - hang on, maybe I donâ€™t understand how gravity works.â€? Fitting way to help By LACHLAN MOORHEAD CARMEN Charlton has made a career out of keeping fit. And now the Narre Warren-based personal trainer is using her business as another source for good, entering a team in this month’s Casey Relay for Life. It’s the fifth year the Carmen Get Fit team will be participating in the relay, having already run several fund-raisers in the lead-up to the event. Carmen has lost three grandparents to cancer and said the cause was dear to her heart. “I personally have only one surviving grandparent, I’ve lost three grandparents to cancer,” she said. “And I have quite a lot of friends and family who have battled and some who survived. “I had a cancer scare myself last year. I have a soft spot for all charities, but I’ve more so been affected by cancer, it’s such an unfair disease. “There’s no cure. If anyone can help in anyway, I would encourage them to do so.” Last year, Carmen’s relay team

The Carmen Get Fit team at last year’s Casey Relay for Life. raised $10,000 for the Cancer Council and this year the 70-person strong team is hoping to exceed their record. “Every year, I hold several fundraising events, from Boot Camps, to Zumbathons, to movie nights, to trivia nights, to shopping tours, to

Amazing Race style treasure hunts, to dodgeball tournaments, to girls night’s in, you name it,” she said. “All of which I donate my time to organising and hosting. I also volunteer at the Relay for Life in NarreCranbourne, Pakenham and Casey

Owners of Folly Farm Blueberry Growers Belinda and Rob Rooth said their berries were grown naturally in a clean environment unlike certain imported foods that didn’t meet the same standard. “We don’t use pesticides or herbicides. There are no concerns with people eating them,” Belinda said. “By picking your own fruit, people can see where it comes from and how hard farmers work to provide healthy fruit and vegetables.” The Rooths, who have

operated the blueberry farm for 16 years, said they noticed an increase in U-pick sales since various Nannas’ frozen mixed berries were recalled from supermarkets after hepatitis A scares. It is believed the berries were washed using water contaminated with faeces of an infected person. Tynong-based health practitioner Melissa Rolfe said if her home garden didn’t keep her full - she bought exclusively local. “I think it’s vitally important that we eat locally grown, seasonal food and support our local growers and primary producers,” said Ms Rolfe, who qualified in nutritional medicine and naturopathy. “We have exceptional produce here, yet it’s over-

Dinosaurs will once again roam Australian soil when the spectacular production, WALKING WITH DINOSAURS - THE ARENA SPECTACULAR, based on the award-winning BBC Television Series, returns this month. TWO people were notably caught in Berwick and Cranbourne last month over the alcohol limit, with one man falling asleep at the wheel as a result. It comes as four men were caught drink-driving in Noble Park on Sunday night in the space of 10 minutes. Police stopped a 28-yearold Noble Park man on Sunday, about 6pm, who blew 0.257 per cent and was driving on a learner’s permit. He will be summonsed to appear in court. As a result of Operation Nelson three more drivers were caught drink-driving around

the same time at the breath test site on Corrigan and Kelvinside roads. All three drivers were issued with penalty notices for exceeding .05 per cent. In February a man was found by police asleep at the wheel in Cranbourne. He returned a reading of 0.225. A woman was also stopped in Berwick last month and blew a reading of 0.218 after crashing her car several times. Southern Metro Commander Doug Fryer said police had been concerned by a “series of recent high-range drink-driving detections” in the outer southeast. “These incidents are a prime

example of why we must continue the focus on impaired drivers to make our roads safer,” he said. “But road safety is more than just drivers under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and there needs to be a whole of community focus around the causes of road trauma such as fatigue, distraction and speed. “It can be a relentless task for police and we need the support from all sections of the community to influence change. “Speak up if you see unsafe behaviour, don’t let your family or friends get behind the wheel if they’ve been drinking, assign a designated driver and always plan ahead.”

WORKING in a nursing home, the team at Melville Grange get to know a lot of people who are affected by cancer. As a result five male staff members from the Melville Grange nursing home in Berwick will be taking part in the World’s Greatest Shave this month. Lifestyle co-ordinator Kerryn Newman had encouraged the staff members to get involved with the event, the second year the nursing home is taking part in the initiative. “It’s wonderful cause, so many people are touched by it (cancer),” Kerryn said. “Working in this industry we’ve seen quite a few with it. It’s nice to be able to make a bit of a stand.” Five years ago Kerryn lost one of her childhood friends to breast cancer, and her memory is never far from her mind. “I had a girlfriend pass away with breast cancer and there’s been a few over the years that have been, not nice to see them, what we can do to help we will do,” she said.

Trent lives by the sword By JARROD POTTER FOUR cuts separate Trent Reeve from international glory at the 16th World Kendo Championships. Reeve, 25, originally from Cockatoo, has honed his skills in kendo - the Japanese swordsbased martial art - and his talents have earned him a place on the Australian delegation heading to Tokyo later this year. Winning in competition requires four successful strikes on your opponent - a strike to the head, wrist, torso and a thrust to the throat to win a match - but combatants also have to correctly hit the right part of the armour with the exact part of the sword while balancing perfect posture and poise. It sounds complicated, but for Reeve and other international level kendo experts, the swordsmanship and precision comes as second nature. To attain that level of skill

took Reeve 10 years of diligent practice as he rose through the ranks of Australian kendo after a school exchange led the Pakenham resident to try out the centuries-old martial art. “Just reading books I found out about kendo,” Reeve said. “In 2005 I went to Japan on exchange and took up kendo while I was over there and in 2006 I took up kendo at Mumeishi in Berwick. “It’s very different to most martial arts - you wear full armour, the traditional pleated skirt and cotton top on, the hard breastplate, the gauntlets and the facemask. “With the sword - the shinai - that was outwardly very interesting and watching it, it’s very noisy and very aggressive.” After a two-year training process, Reeve was selected for the final 15-person squad to represent Australia at the championships held this year at the literal ‘home of kendo’ - the

Nippon Budokan Hall. “To be on the Australian team it’s been four or five years coming plus a year in Japan, it’s really, as far as world kendo is concerned, the pinnacle of competitive kendo,” Reeve said. “Being on the Australian team is fantastic, but on that same team going to Japan, and fighting at the Nippon Budokan at the home of kendo is a silver lining.” He’s just returned from an extended training stay at the Nippon Sports Science University in Japan, where he “lived and breathed kendo for near on a year” honing his craft and perfecting his technique ahead of the championships. IT’S rather ironic that Pakenham - despite losing 200 centimetres and 118 kilograms from the ruck- promises to be bigger and stronger when it runs out for its Round 1 clash against Hampton Park on April 11. The loss of giant-sized interleague ruckman Kym Jones will no doubt hurt the Lions this season, but coach Steve O’Bryan is banking on stronger bodies to lift his side from its elimination final loss to Berwick last year. “When we sat back and compared ourselves to Beaconsfield, Berwick, Cranbourne and Narre Warren it became clear that they had much bigger bodies than us,” O’Bryan said. “We identified it early as a deficiency and the boys have really worked hard in the gym to get stronger.” Notably stronger at training on Monday night were youngsters Sam Blackwood, Jack Melbourne and Brad Cavalot, while best and fairest placegetter Troy Toussaint and livewire half-forward Jake Barclay are reported to be significantly bigger than last year. But it’s another youngster, Jarrad Cavalot that will quite literally have the biggest shoes to fill as he takes over the number one ruck mantle from Jones. “Yeah, look, it’s a bit of a flattener to lose Kimbo, but Jarrad showed some really promising signs last year,” O’Bryan said. “He’ll have a lot of weight on his shoulders but, apart from Scotty Meyer at Beaconsfield, I don’t think there are too many

Both players were hampered by serious knee injuries in 2014. 135432 Picture: DAVID NAGEL ruckman crucial to success in this league.” O’Bryan is confident his sides improved strength, both physically and mentally, will complement its powerful running game. “I think our running game is a massive strength and can make us one of the best sides in the competition,” he said. “We’ll still be young, there’s no doubt about that, but we had some good results last year that has built our belief that we can beat anyone. “We’re a bit more mature, a bit more experienced and mentally I think we’re very strong.” The Lions did beat both grand finalists, Beaconsfield and Cranbourne last year, but losses to those two sides, after leading at three-quarter time, in Rounds 17 and 18, really did take the pep out of their step ahead of a finals campaign. O’Bryan, himself, said he had to bear some of the responsibility for his side’s poor finish to the season. “I hammered the top-three position into the boys, then we

lost that game to Cranbourne, when we could have locked away top three, then lost to Beaconsfield in the last round and we never really recovered,” he said. “I should have been looking at what was beyond the doublechance, and that’s winning a premiership, that should have been our focus. “Sure, we want to finish topthree again, but I won’t be drilling it into the players like I did last year, personally I learnt a lot from that experience.” The Lions welcome back 2013 recruit, Damien Holmes, from Kilcunda-Bass, club stalwart Beau Wheeler returns from Wangaratta, while Alex Johnson, an exciting key-position player from Clayton, will bolster the Lions’ big-man department. League best-and-fairest winner Dom Paynter is running strongly at training and should return from an ACL injury to his right knee by early July. Pakenham’s first practice match is against Leongatha at Toomuc Reserve on Saturday March 21.

Lehman gets Lion’s share By RUSSELL BENNETT WEST GIPPSLAND CRICKET ASSOCIATION REVIEW - ROUND 14 (DAY 1) JUST when it seems his form can’t get any better, Pakenham gun Russell Lehman takes it to a completely new level. He sliced through the Upper Beaconsfield batting line-up in round 13, snaring a career-best 7/17 and drawing the highest of praise from Lions president Phil Anning who said: “As far as I’m concerned, Russ’ performances this year have him in the top four or five cricketers I’ve ever seen at the club”. And on Saturday on Toomuc Reserve’s front ground, Lehman claimed another seven-wicket haul - this time against the reigning Premiers Kooweerup - finishing with 7/54 from his 27 overs. The Demons were dismissed for 202 in the 68th over with only skipper Michael Giles (48) making it past 30. The visitors have a series of rash shots to blame for their total, with all but three of their batsmen getting double-figure starts. It seemed like it was business as usual at the top of the Kooweerup order with Giles and Chris O’Hara (29) putting on 85 for the first wicket. But O’Hara wasn’t particularly impressed with where the Demons’ innings went from there - and he in-

cluded himself and Giles in that. “If you look back you could say almost every one of us got ourselves out,” he said, bluntly. “They bowled really well but some pretty poor shot selection brought about a lot of our downfalls. “Doof (Giles) and I really should have gone on with it and it’s just disappointing that we didn’t bat out our overs - that’s a cardinal sin.” Still, if any team would back itself in to win with a relatively modest 202 on the board, it’s the reigning premiers Kooweerup. These Demons are ruthless with the ball and they’ve got no shortage of in-form options to turn to this week. O’Hara paid credit to Pakenham and its committee for the way in which it hosted Pink Ladies Day on Saturday. “Full credit to the club and their hard-working committee - they do a fantastic job,” he said. “They always do things extremely professionally and they should be really proud of their efforts. “Sometimes you need clubs to set the standard and I know other clubs are envious of their committee and how they go about it.” Pakenham will resume this Saturday on 0/23 with Jack Anning (9) and Chris Smith (13) at the crease - the latter having already received a life

well on top against Nyora. Gramc came to the crease after the loss of three quick wickets but quickly found his feet surging past the 30s for the first time in a game this season. He wasn’t done there though - not even close. He smashed the Maroons attack to all parts as skipper Scott Webster (41), Steve Dillon (35) and Nic Close (23) took the side to 250. Gavin Hackett (3/55) and Keith Maclure (3/62) were the leading wicket-takers for Nyora, which will resume on 0/26 on Saturday.

Win carries its own Pennant to victory PAKENHAM BOWLS CLUB BOTH of Pakenham Bowls Club’s midweek pennant sides and two of the four Saturday pennant sides made the finals this year with both the semi’s and grand finals having been played in the past week. MIDWEEK Pakenham One (Div. 3) finished in second spot on the ladder thus earning a home semi-final which was played on Tuesday 24 February on the faster of Pakenham’s two greens in front of a good number of enthusiastic supporters. From the outset, Pakenham looked to be in control of the game and that was the way it panned out with the home side victorious by 72 shots to 44. Paul ‘Hot’ Currie’s rink of Sue Hudson, Ashley Graham and Ian ‘Lefty’ Anderson were on fire, winning 33-14 including an eight count - rare in any game but extremely special in a final. With the assistance of “his ladies,” Joyce Andrus, Beth Webster and Fiona Samson, Keith Emms also had a great win, 26 shots to eight. The One’s travelled to Clayton on Thursday 26 February to play the grand final on grass against the powerful Mulgrave Country Club. It was fitting that these two sides should meet in the final showdown as between them they had dominated the competition all season. Unfortunately, from quite early in the game it was apparent that a number of Pakenham’s players were finding it difficult to adjust to a holding green and they were forced to play catch up bowls for the greater part of the match, eventually losing overall but only by 14 shots - generally outbowled but certainly not disgraced. The only winning rink from Pakenham was again Keith Emms (s), Joyce Andrus, Beth Webster and Fiona Samson with a score of 20-14. Despite missing out on the flag, the One’s will be promoted and will play in Division Two next season, a great effort. At stages during this game against Vermont South, the Two’s looked as if they may have been in trouble had it not been for the dominance of Leon Brown’s rink - at one point they led their opponents 18 to two! In the end, Pakenham won on two rinks out of three with an overall score of 61-51. Needless to say, the best rink, with a final score of 27 to eight, was Leon Brown (s), Alan Wilcock, Joy Tomlin and Gail Wilcock. The venue for the grand final against Cranbourne RSL was Waverley Golf at Rowville and the Twos left Pakenham on a mission, pumped up with confidence. Those positive feelings were carried through into the game itself with Pakenham establishing an early lead which they did not relinquish until about the half way mark, when for some reason they took their collective foot off and allowed the RSL an eight shot advantage. However from that point all three rinks lifted, regained the momentum and brought home a win across the board, 69 shots to 51 with all rinks up. Results: D. Laird (s)/A. Jones/K. Clifton/J. The Two’s have now won another flag to pin up on the clubhouse wall and will be promoted to Third Division next season - a magnificent achievement. SATURDAY By finishing the season in second spot, Pakenham Three (Div. 6) earned a home semi-final and this game against Mulgrave Country Club was played under grey and at times blustery conditions in front of a very vocal group of local supporters on Saturday 28 February. From the start of proceedings, Joyce Andrus’ rink monstered their opponents with Joyce herself virtually walking on water. It was a credit to the opposing skipper’s temperament that she maintained her good humour for most of the game, given that she was almost always down when she left the head. However Kev (The Prez) Donald’s rink found themselves in almost the reverse of this situation and spent most of the afternoon on damage limitation. Paul Currie and his crew simply soldiered on and never at any stage looked seriously challenged, eventually winning 28-16 while Charlie Harris and company were engaged in a tight battle which went right down to the wire for a oneshot loss on that rink. At the close of play, Pakenham had a comfortable 90-65 win including a

great 39-10 by Joyce Andrus (s), John ‘Giovanni’ Donazzan, Ashley Graham and Graham Andrus. Pakenham Four (Div. 7) played their semi-final against Narre Warren at Narre where after being down early, they grabbed a narrow lead just short of the halfway mark only to drop away, eventually going down across the board 64-97. The best of Pakenham’s rinks with a close 18-19 loss were Ron Hawkins (s), Ave Jones, John Siekman and Julian Dyer. The Fours may not have earned promotion but they are to be congratulated on having a successful season - a far cry from the dark days in the Peninsula Pennant Competition where as a result of being placed in an inappropriately high division they were regularly beaten. Pakenham Three were then left as the sole Saturday Pennant side to advance to a grand final which was played on the first day of autumn on the grass at Glen Waverley against the ‘old enemy’ Berwick, a team more experienced and practiced on that surface. Unfortunately for Pakenham, the greens were rendered more unfriendly by the rain which fell overnight and it was with a little trepidation that they commenced play on a heavy 12.75 second green. However despite the fact that a number of Pakenham’s players were having trouble getting up during the early stages of the match, they were soon able to establish a narrow lead, mainly due to a strong start on Charlie Harris’ rink. By about the half way mark, this lead had been extended to 16 shots with three rinks up and one square. However as often happens in a game of bowls, the momentum shifted after the afternoon tea break and by the eighteenth end, Berwick was winning on three rinks and up by three shots overall. Then, encouraged by a small but vocal group of supporters, Pakenham’s players lifted across the board and brought home a magnificent 81-74 win, two rinks up and two down. Best rink for Pakenham was Charlie Harris (s), Paul Walter, Lois Mashado and Roger Till with a score of 25-15. The other winning rink with a come-from-behind 21-19 win was Kev Donald (s), Gian Pianezzola, Anne-Marie Emms and Norm Buckley. The game was worthy of a grand final with some great bowls played by members of both sides. Pakenham Three have brought home another flag and will be promoted to Fifth Division next season.
