Right royal opening By ANEEKA SIMONIS THE Governor of Victoria officially opened Cardinia Shire Council’s new civic centre at an official ceremony yesterday morning. His Excellency Alex Chernov AC QC described the new Officer complex as “state-of-the-art” and said it would help service the ever-growing shire population. “This is no ordinary shire centre,” the Governor said. “It will service the growing population which is expected to increase tenfold in the next 20-30 years.” The shire building, which accommodates up to 400 employees, has been in full swing since November last year. The well-attended opening event was kicked off with a traditional welcome and smoking ceremony by senior Aboriginal Elder Aunty Caroline which followed a performance by the All Together Choir. Students from the nearby Officer Specialist School also got involved in the ceremony by forming the guard of honour which welcomed His Excellency, and his wife Elizabeth. Cardinia Shire Mayor Leticia Wilmot said it was a pleasure welcoming the Governor back to the shire after his recent tour of the area in October last year. “We are privileged to have the Governor and Mrs Chernov officially open the civic centre and we hope the Cardinia Shire community will join us for this celebration,” she said. She said the new office had fast become the town’s bustling, central hub. “As more residents move into Cardinia Shire and more businesses and community services are established, this civic centre will become the heart of Officer, and a vibrant and thriving space for the whole community to enjoy.” According to Cardinia Shire Council, the customer service team had an-

School’s height of learning PAKENHAM’S first independent Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning College has welcomed its first group of students for the year. ECG College, which offers an alternative for sudents to complete senior secondary studies, opened its doors to students from 15 to 20 years of age in Pakenham this month. Students come to the school for a variety of reasons, such as because of illness, family reasons or because they simply find it difficult to learn in a mainstream school environment. ECG College head of school Paul Banks said the students had settled well into the campus, located in the building formerly occupied by Oz Child on Princes Highway. “The students have taken a trip to the Summit in Trafalgar where they were invited to tackle some challenging outdoor activities involving climbing and heights,” he said. “The activities encouraged students to trust, understand fear and experience the rewards associated with letting go. “They have also travelled from Pakenham to Warragul to build their practical skills and knowledge in planning and using public transport and getting around.” Mr Banks said the students were planning a number of projects to extend their knowledge and skills including designing and establishing a herb and vegetable garden and constructing outdoor furniture. Students also gain valuable work placement experience to build their confidence and job readiness.

THERE will be plenty of people walking around Toomuc Reserve this weekend during the 18-hour Relay for Life event, but there will also be a stack of family friendly entertainment to enjoy. The relay kicks off on Friday at 5.30pm with an opening ceremony, followed by survivors and carers taking to the track for the first lap, accompanied by a piper. From 6.45pm Star Search for a Cause starts, a talent search run by the Casey Relay for Life, with last year’s finalists to perform. Solo artist Brittany Leo will then sing from 7.30pm followed by a candlelight ceremony from 8.30pm. “This is a moving experience where we all remember those who have lost the fight against cancer,” Pakenham Relay for Life president John Henzen said. “The lighting of candles in a bag with a message takes place at this time and these candlebags then surround the track for the remainder of the event.”

Pam’s eyes opened on border By LACHLAN MOORHEAD PAM Mamouney stood next to her daughter at the Turkish-Syrian border with tears in her eyes. Pam’s study tour to Turkey, on which she was invited last year by the Australian Intercultural Society, had brought her outside a refugee camp on the border where displaced Syrians picking peppers in the fields approached the Westerners with dirt staining their garments and sorrow written on their faces. There was Pam, a 79-year-old volunteer from Berwick, fighting the good fight a short walk from Syria. The small group of tourists, including Pam, the Casey Multi-faith Network Vice-President, gave the refugees what money they had. “We were all crying, we felt so sorry for them,” Pam said of meeting the refugees. “It was so moving. One said his family were killed in the bombing in Syria, it was so moving to talk to them. “At first they were very shy then the men came over and the women came over. They had dirt on their long dresses.” Last week Pam, a practising Mormon who belongs to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, shared her story with members of both the Casey Multi-faith Network and the Berwick Probus group. In September she embarked on the tour of Turkey with her daughter, Sue Frost, and a group of six or so other dignitaries of different races and religions, including Jews, Christians and Muslims. Pam said she was asked to join the tour by the Melbourne contingent of the Australian Intercultural Society, with the aim of “building bridges between Westerners and Muslims.” Pam, who asked her daughter to accompany her on the 13-day trip, said it was an incredible and insightful tour, and hoped she was able to give back as much to the local community as she took away. “It was to teach Westerners to break down barriers,” Pam said. “We learnt about schools in Turkey where teachers are educating young men and women
This photo, taken by Pam, shows the refugee camp in Turkey, near the Syrian border. and helping to break down radicalism. “Education is the key.” As upsetting as it was to see the Syrian refugees who had fled from a homeland torn apart by civil conflict for the last several years, Pam said the Turkish people were treating the refugees well. But that does little to negate the ruin Syria has become. When stepping off the tour bus, on the Turkish side of the border, Pam was warned to look out for landmines. In her diary, Pam’s daughter Sue writes of their brief but telling journey to the border, as the tour headed to the Turkish city of Harran. “We went past a refugee camp with all the refugees from Syria down to the border, kids running up along the bus trying to sell you water, the scene brought tears to my eyes,” she wrote. “We literally just drove by slowly then headed back up to Harran. We stopped about five minutes up the road where some Syrian refugees were picking peppers, our guides started talking to them. “Some women didn’t come over till the end, we got photos with them and gave them some water and some of the nuts we had with us and some money as well.”

The man was taken to Narre Warren police station where his carer is understood to have been waiting for him. Ms Tiglar also went to the station after the incident, but the man had already left and she never got his name. Ms Tiglar cares for her daughter Anastasia who suffers from a rare chromosome abnormality known as 1p36 deletion syndrome (mosaicism). She is believed to be one of only two registered people in the world
who have that specific case. A GOOD Samaritan who saved a man she believed to be intellectually disabled from being hit by passing cars near Fountain Gate Shopping Centre on the weekend is incensed no other drivers stopped to help him. Pauline-Marie Tiglar, whose 15-year-old daughter Anastasia also suffers from an intellectual disability, was driving along Narre Warren North road to the shopping centre around 2pm on Saturday when she saw the man - wearing no shoes or shirt, only shorts - “darting in between the traffic coming into Westfield”. Ms Tiglar parked her car at the nearby Bob Jane T-Mart and ran to help the man who was outside in the 35-plus degree heat. “How many selfish, ignorant people simply drove past ignoring him?” Ms Tiglar, from Narre Warren, said this week. “I didn’t, and couldn’t!” Ms Tiglar said a few weeks ago she saw several people stop their cars and jump out to save a stray dog at the same location. “It was just a couple of weeks ago that people stopped because a dog jumped out from a car window but they wouldn’t stop to save this man,” she said. While her friend called the police, Ms Tiglar tried to talk to the man and guide him to safety but he took off and ran into the shopping centre. Chasing after him on foot, Ms Tiglar followed the man into Fountain Gate and then back outside again and onto the road where the ambulance and police eventually retrieved him. “The ambulance had to do a

A CRANBOURNE primary school has done its bit in the fight for cyber safety with a creative cartoon based around the theme. With a $10,000 Bullystoppers grant from the government, students from Cranbourne Carlisle Primary School worked with illustrator Ben Sanders to create a cartoon. The short clip was about protecting passwords and 10 lucky children went to the city to record the voices at the Creativa Web Videos studio. Information and communication technology co-ordinator Tobin
Cuss said the children auditioned and voted for those who would have their voices recorded for the final version. He said it was about education, but in a fun way. Mr Cuss said the students thoroughly enjoyed the process. “Students came up with the story lines and the illustrator did the pics,” he said. “The school really prides itself on trying to be up to date with technology,” he said. “Understanding how to use online accounts is important for children in this day and age,” he said.

Vital lessons taught early By LACHLAN MOORHEAD CHILDREN from a number of primary schools in Casey were this week taught at Lysterfield Lake how to stay alive in water. It comes after the tragic drowning of a five-year-old boy at the lake in February last year. There have been three reported drowning deaths at Lysterfield Lake since 1 July 2000, according to Life Saving Victoria (LSV) statistics. The Open Water Learning Experience program, organised by LSV, ran for two sessions on Tuesday at the lake, aiming to equip children with skills to help others in an emergency.
“We aim to run the program in a local open water environment that participants may already be familiar with, or are likely to visit, to make them aware of potential hazards and dangers and to develop skills and knowledge to enjoy their local water environment safely,” LSV general manager Education Services Kate Simpson said. The program’s activities include rescue strategies and how to use everyday items to perform a rescue. Students also practise important survival techniques, as well as how to enter and exit the water safely, and take part
in safe body-boarding. The two-hour sessions were subsidised by the Casey Council and attended by students from Narre Warren North Primary, Cranbourne East Primary and Devon Meadows Primary. “We find that cost is often a barrier for schools to participate in external programs, so accessing community grants enables us to subsidise costs and attract more schools to participate in our programs,” Ms Simpson said. It’s understood 47 per cent of drowning deaths in 2013/’14 occurred at inland waterways, according to LSV.
The Open Water Learning Experience program is offered to schools and community groups across Victoria, with a number of tours into regional areas. LSV will be running the same program at Lysterfield Lake for seniors, aged 60 years plus, next month. In January 2013, a Cranbourne West man drowned at Lysterfield Lake while trying to rescue two children who had been using a dinghy. The children made it back to shore unharmed. Charity begins for $5000 thief By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A MAN has used a credit card stolen from a charity volunteer’s handbag for a $5000 top-up of his online gambling account. The 24-year-old pleaded guilty to theft and proceeds-ofcrime offences in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Monday, having told police he regarded the credit card as “free money”. Police prosecutor First Constable Tess Davison told the court a St Vincent’s de Paul volunteer had delivered goods to a Hampton Park home on 6 August last year. Soon after leaving, she realised she’d left behind her $300 handbag containing $50 cash, a mobile phone, rosary and credit card. There was no sign of it at the house when she returned.
The accused admitted to police he had paid his Sportsbet account online using the credit card that afternoon, claiming a friend had delivered him the handbag after “finding it on a letterbox”. Twenty minutes later, the victim reported the theft to her bank. First Const Davison told the court that police found the victim’s handbag in the bedroom wardrobe of the accused on 24 September, along with silver jewellery stolen from his sister and two opened Westpac account statements belonging to a third party. The accused - who was also found at home with a zip-lock bag of cannabis - told police he regretted the theft but had regarded the credit card as “free money”.
Defence lawyer Siva Kandasamy said the accused performed his “opportunistic” crime in order to pay gambling debts. There was no benefit from the crime as the $5000 and the sister’s jewellery were recovered, Mr Kandasamy said. Magistrate Barry Schultz said the accused - who had no prior convictions - was entitled to be “cut some slack” on his first time in court. “It’s not the most sophisticated crime ... but these are serious matters. These are people who worked hard for their things. “As you must know, we all have to work hard for what we get in life. “There are no shortcuts.” The man was fined $1200 without conviction.

United stand against violence By BRIDGET SCOTT A GROUP of front runners joined hands last week to take a stand against all forms of violence. Community leaders including local MPs, councillors, representatives from the Casey Multi Faith Network and police officers gathered in Narre Warren on Friday 20 February to make a statement of intent against violence in the community. The statement was part of a collective effort to unite against all forms of violence, and reaffirm the stance that leaders in the community won’t stand for any type of discrimination. It also highlighted that the City of Casey would welcome people from different, countries, religions and cultures. Local Inspector Paul Breen, who also spoke out late last year, said this was “a test of our leadership.” “I am calling you all to be strong in your conviction against violence and not waiver to the criminal
minority who may seek to threaten our peaceful existence,” he said. “As the Local Area Commander, I give you, the community a very firm commitment that Victoria Police will preserve the peace and uphold the law by increasing our patrols, proactively targeting any identified ‘hot spots’ and, being highly vis-

Selfless work not neglected By LACHLAN MOORHEAD MEMBERS from the Endeavour Hills Rotary Club this week gave back to the volunteers who have already given so much to their community. The volunteers at the Andrews Centre in Endeavour Hills don’t help the needy to gain any recognition. But that hasn’t stopped the Casey community from thanking and rewarding the local crisis and counselling centre. The money raised from the Rotary Club of Endeavour Hills’ Golf Day, held at Cranbourne Golf Club on Monday 23 February, will be largely donated to the Andrews Centre to assist in its work. While recently helping the Andrews Centre with a $7000 renovation of its kitchen, Endeavour Hills Rotarian John O’Reilly said his club was blown away by the selfless work carried out by the facility’s volunteers for the less fortunate. “They work in the community, we work for the community, and these people are just doing amazing things,” he said of the Andrews Centre. “They are all professional people who have retired and they volunteer their time. “We were so impressed with what they do and we thought let’s not just do the kitchen but let’s also throw
some money at them, too.” Despite Monday’s threatening weather, the Rotary Club was able to organise a lunch to be held instead of a dinner and kept the rain at bay until a very successful 12hole competition was played later in the afternoon. “We got out of a real tight spot, and made a lot of money,” he said. “I thank the golfers for the generosity, they were fabulous.” John was hoping to raise a gross total of $16,000 and while the donations are still being collated, he is confident that target was exceeded. Various other charities will also benefit from funds raised at the Golf Day, sponsored by major partner Bendigo Bank, and Mr O’Reilly said the Andrews Centre would be the main beneficiary. “When you think about people who can’t speak English and can’t get a job, when they haven’t got food - there’s so many basic things that the Andrews Centre helps out with,” he said. “They’re very important, in my opinion, and it’s done with love. “They’re very genuine and that’s what blew us away.” For more information, visit www.rotaryendeavourhills. org.au.

Yet so many people make the same mistakes over and over again regardless of whether they live in Melbourne, Canberra or Upper Kumbucta West selling a multi-million dollar mansion or a 2 bedroom unit. Most of us will sell every seven or more years, in fact the average person will sell 4-5 times in a lifetime. A good real estate agent will do this in a month, some of the countries top performers will do this in a week! So for the average Joe it's hard to develop great selling skills if you only do it every seven or more years. During that time markets and legislation will have changed dramatically and the choices you will need to make selling your family home may be different to the ones you made when you last sold. All together, at long last By LACHLAN MOORHEAD THE construction of an Aboriginal gathering place in Doveton will begin later this year. The City of Casey approved a report on Tuesday week which will see works on the gathering place - the first in the municipality - begin in July, with a disused building in Agonis Street in the heart of the Linden Place shopping precinct to be refurbished at an estimated cost of $500,000. The State Government is understood to be providing $120,000 to the project, while Casey council will provide $380,000. Preliminary plans for the gathering place include the provision of maternal and mental health facilities as well as heritage and cultural activity spaces. Wurundjeri elder Diane Kerr, chairman of the gathering place committee, said the facility had been a long time coming. “It’s exciting for our community to finally have a place in Casey we can call our own, with avenues for the Aboriginal youth,” she said. “That’s what it’s for - to sit and yarn and teach young ones and bridge the gap between the elders and youth.” Aunty Di, from Narre Warren, said up until now there had been nowhere in the municipality for elders to collectively share their stories with Indigenous youngsters, and vice versa. “There’s the Dandenong Aboriginal co-op, which Casey is a part of, but it’s hard for people to get down there, so to have something like this is really important,” she said. There were 1455 Casey residents who identified as Aboriginal as of the 2011 census, according to statistics provided by the council. It’s understood this is the highest reported Aboriginal population in metropolitan Melbourne, with 45.6 per cent of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population in the municipality below the age of 18. Casey councillor Rafal Kaplon said the region’s Indigenous community had been crying out for their own facility. “Casey’s Indigenous community has lacked a space to call their own,” he said. “I’m really happy the community took it upon themselves to bring this issue to council and work closely on it.”

Aimed at children aged up to 12 years old and their families, the Casey Kids Carnival will promote accessibility, showcase arts and craft activities, encourage physical activity, open-ended learning and safety and create active community ties. Expressions of interest for volunteers at the carnival are currently being sought. Lynbrook Residents Association VISITORS will be able to lose themselves in colour next month as the Lynbrook Residents Association gets set to present the HOLI festival. The festival of colour will take place on Saturday 7 March at Banjo Patterson Park, Lynbrook, followed by the Bollywood Moonlit Cinema. From 4pm until 7.30pm visitors will be able to get into the spirit of the colour festival with this traditional Hindu celebration. Everyone is welcome to come and get colourful. Family members and staff gathered at Chestnut Gardens to wish Phoena all the best for her 103rd with cake served and musical entertainment provided. Taylor-made for podium By RUSSELL COLVIN RYAN Taylor, 27, has kick started his Australian Supersport Championship campaign off in the best possible way by claiming a solid third place last weekend at Phillip Island when the ASBK championship was racing alongside the opening round of the FIM eni World Superbike Championship. Taylor, who hails from Garfield, qualified his all new look RTR by Moto Obsession Yamaha R6 in sixth position with a time of 1min38.682. While the bike was handling well, Taylor was affected by fuel issues that he labelled the major downfall to his overall pace. Once the green flag dropped for race one on Saturday, Taylor managed to come home in fifth place after a good ‘ding-dong’ battle with New South Welshman rider, Mitch Levy. Race two on Sunday saw Taylor get a diabolical start that saw him back as far as 12th. However, the three-time Victorian Supersport champion wasted no time by carving his way through the field like a hot knife through butter making his way up to fourth position in the 10-lap race. With a 5-4 result, Taylor bagged 33 points and regarded it as a “great weekend overall.”

By RUSSELL BENNETT YOUNG Pakenham waterskiing sensations Jack and Bailey Christie continue to reach for the stars in their quest to make their indelible mark on the sport. Big brother Jack and little brother Bailey have both showed incredible form over the holiday season, reaching personal-best marks in most tournaments. Back in December they set their own tough, yet achievable goals for the season. “(But) I believe when our feet actually hit the ground we’ll need to reset (those goals) as most of them have been achieved and excelled,” mum Josie explained. Bailey - bottom for his age - finished second overall in the Australian Junior Masters and second overall again in the Australian Masters. Jack, top age for his division, won both the Australian Masters and Junior Masters. He also broke the state jump record and received the prestigious Glen Thurlow Award for the most outstanding skier of the tournament. Soon after the Christies returned home they received an invitation for Jack to ski at the

high-profile Junior Moomba this year. The tournament is typically for under-17s and above, yet Jack was invited despite still being in the under-14s. He also accomplished one of his biggest goals for the season, skiing an Australian record in the slalom, and now holds the best score in Australian history for his age group. Over the past week Jack and Bailey both skied in the Australian under-14 team at Myuna Bay near Newcastle, New South Wales. In the annual ‘Aussies versus Kiwis’ event, Jack won the slalom and jump competitions and came runner-up in the trick segment - leading to a first place overall. Bailey, mean-
while, finished third in the jump and slalom competitions and fourth in trick to place fourth overall. Jack and Bailey were both last year named in a preliminary squad to compete at the 2016 Junior World Championships. The honour came after the Waterski Nationals in Darwin over Easter, where they both competed in the under-14 age group. Jack is regarded as the more gifted jumper of the two brothers, while Bailey typically excels at his trick work. The boys are by each other’s side throughout their competitions and will back each other to the hilt to achieve the ultimate success.
United drubbed in Chaos CLOSE, but no cigar in their first official outing as Pakenham United was bested in the Football Chaos Cup grand final 0-3 by Monash Soccer Club. Pakenham United, newly forged from Pakenham SC and Cardinia United JSC, had high hopes entering this year’s tournament, having finished in the top four last year. The Cougars started with a bang - rattling off a 4-0 win over Whitehorse United before finishing atop Group A with wins over Monash and Bayswater. Local rivals Bunyip Strikers also found themselves through to the finals with a trio of wins in Group B. The Strikers defeated Monash Wolves to finish top of Group B, but their semi-final rematch didn’t fare as well as the Wolves rallied to knock the Bunyip boys out 1-2 with a late penalty putting the home side through. Pakenham United would finish the gallant efforts of VCFA powerhouse Berwick Churches with a 2-0 semi-final triumph as an amazing lob from Wellington Teles cleared the goalkeeper from the half-way line which coach Mario Hili said was “meant to be a cross... but you take them anyway they come”. It wasn’t meant to be for the Cougars overall down in Newborough though as Monash started strongly in the grand final and finished just as well to record a three-goal win over the far-travelling Pakenham United squad. The coach was pleased with his charges and especially their perseverance as five matches and heat fatigue set in towards the end of the singleday competition.

Pakenham United will place three senior sides into the FFV ranks this season - Men’s Metropolitan Leagues 2 and 4 and Women’s State League 4. It’s a saying that’s been doing the rounds over recent weeks, and there’s a damn good reason for it. The gun Pakenham all-rounder is compiling a brilliant season with both bat and ball, with 459 runs and 35 wickets to his name. And that’s only the Premier competition - not counting his recent Country Week heroics, which included both a hattrick and an undefeated century. His purple patch continued on Saturday as he sliced through the Upper Beaconsfield batting line-up like a hot knife through butter. He snared a career-best 7/17 from 19 overs (which included 10 maidens) as the Lions dismissed the home side for just 107 in response to their own 8/206 from day one. Only Maroons skipper Chris Savage (27), wicket-keeper batsman Jake Serong (26) and Taylor Joyce (24) offered any real resistance, and Lehman removed both Serong and Joyce. Pakenham president Phil Anning gave Lehman the highest of praise after the game, describing him as one of the top five players he’s seen at the club. Ever. “From a personal point of view, I think Russ has matured a lot as a cricketer and he’s clearly made a decision that he wants to do really well,” Anning said. “He’s hardly missed a night at training this season and his work ethic has been fantastic. “He’s a real leader in a young side and he’s pretty much been faultless all year, as far as I’m concerned. “I made a comment to a bloke at the (club) function on Saturday night that, as far as I’m concerned, Russ’s performances this year have him in the top four or five cricketers I’ve ever seen at the club.” Anning said Lehman had taken his consistency “to a whole new level”, adding “he’s taken a more hands-on role at training and he’s got a really good cricket brain. “I know Boof (skipper Jason Williams) and Jack (Anning) speak very highly of him and the ideas and suggestions he has out on the ground.”

player), and the Don Jackson award (Pakenham Cricket Club’s best and fairest) this season. He was already named best on ground in the Vivian Shield clash, and we’re tipping he’s also a huge chance to take out the Terry Stephenson Medal for the best player in Premier this season. Meanwhile, in local District Division action Devon Meadows (6/173) got the better of Pakenham Upper-Toomuc (155), thanks to a brilliant knock by Steve Robinson (75) and 6/42 from Adam Newstead.
Clyde (136) also cruised to victory over Nar Nar Goon-Maryknoll (63 and 4/92) despite a modest first innings score. Pakenham’s Sub-District side was also restricted to a sub-150 run score, but a pair of standout bowling performances - from Jason Fisher (4/30) and Jack Melbourne (4/15) were vital in dismissing Lang Lang for 120. The Lions sit in second spot on the Sub-District ladder with one round to play before the finals.
Nothing gets in Kelly’s way on the track By JARROD POTTER THE well-worn tracks of Tynong North have proven the best possible preparation for newly selected Australian cross country runner Ben Kelly. Since picking up the athletics bug after a school cross-country triumph, Kelly, 18, has been crazy for the sport and his passion has earned him selection to run for Australia in China next month. “Over six years now, it’s become a real passion of mine… especially finishing year 12, it gives myself a lot more time to dedicate myself,” Kelly said. “I did a school cross-country race and won by a fair bit and knew there was something special about my running abilities, so I joined the local clubs and now I’m at Glenhuntly Athletic Club with great coaches Chris Wardlaw and Trevor Vincent.” With his schooling completed - the Haileybury Berwick alumnus
has more time to focus on his racing and has been blazing trails and tracks across the region in his training. An average training week for Kelly is about 110 kilometres as he prepares for an international debut at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Guiyang, China. He had to speed to the finish in the Australian qualifiers earlier this month, but managed to finish fourth and book his ticket. “I finished fourth at the trails… to be the first Aussie (at the championships to finish) is something I’m aiming for definitely… if I get that I’ll probably get an awesome finish as well,” Kelly said. “It was pretty relaxed for the first six-seven kilometres then it really kicked home. “I hadn’t reached the full training program yet as I had China in mind and didn’t just want to focus on that race.” Whatever the distance - whether

physical ability - there’s nothing getting in your way - you run at your maximum and give it everything,” Kelly said. “It might be a bit simple to others, but to runners, it’s what determines if you’re fit or not.” After the championships, Kelly hopes to find his way across to North America to gain an athletic scholarship, where he wants to attend an NCAA Division 1 ranked school and study his other passion - chemical engineering. “It gives me plenty of time now - as they start in August - to knuckle down even further and there are a few offers coming in here and there,” Kelly said. “Hopefully I can get a spot.” Kelly wanted to thank his sponsors Ron Hill Performance Clothing and Mizuno for their support in his cross-country endeavours. Wait over, new Mazda is out THE wait for the arrival of the allnew Mazda 2 is over with Mazda’s latest light car launched in November.
Re-imagined from the ground up and integrating the elegant lines of Mazda’s award-winning KODO – Soul of Motion design language and innovative SKYACTIV technology, the new Mazda 2 has more power yet is more fuel efficient, offers unequalled styling and is better connected than any of its predecessors. Available as a hatch, the Mazda 2 comes with two transmission types, the six-speed SKYACTIV-Drive automatic and six-speed SKYACTIV-MT manual, and offers two 1.5 litre SKYACTIVG petrol engine alternatives. The standard specification puts out 79kW of power and 139Nm of torque, while the higher specification version has 81kW of power and 141Nm of torque, both of which are an improvement on the outgoing model. In a win for buyers, the Mazda 2 boasts best-ever fuel consumption numbers. The high spec SKYACTIV-G 1.5 litre petrol engine with SKYACTIVDrive automatic transmission sips as little as 4.9 litres per 100 kilometres, an improvement of 28 per cent over the old model, while the standard specification SKYACTIV-G 1.5 litre petrol engine with SKYACTIV-MT manual
The KODO - Soul of Motion design breathes energy into the shape of the new Mazda 2. The full Mazda 2 range is available at Bruce Clough Mazda now. transmission uses just 5.4 litres per 100 kilometres, an improvement of 15 per cent compared to the outgoing engine. In a first for the segment, the Mazda 2 introduces a head-up active driving display on the high grade Genki model. In addition, Genki features the nextgeneration HMI with commander control allowing safe access to navigation, communications and infotainment including social media via MZD Connect, and i-ACTIVSENSE technology, in the form of Smart City Brake Support, is available as an option across the entire range.
Also new for Mazda’s smallest car are four different interior trim options. The Neo, Maxx and Genki each has its own unique look and feel, with a further colour pack option available on the Maxx. The newest generation Mazda 2 is available in eight striking colours including new Dynamic Blue Mica and Smoky Rose Mica, the popular Soul Red makes its debut on Mazda2, while Aluminium Metallic, Black Mica, Snowflake White Pearl Mica, Gunmetal Blue Mica and Metropolitan Grey Mica round out the palette.
