■ All-time high prices, yet Pakenham still affordable...
Housing boom PAKENHAM remains one of the most affordable suburbs for buying a house, despite prices setting record-breaking highs which are set to continue according to the latest figures released by national observers. According to PriceFinder an independent company who monitors housing prices, the Pakenham market saw a price jump of nearly five per cent last year. On average this translated to a $15,000 leap in 12 months the biggest improvement in over four years. While those figures have been backed by the Real Estate Institute of Victoria, Pakenham remained the eighth most affordable suburb in Melbourne for the December quarter. REIV spokesperson Paul Bird said there had been an almost $11,000 increase - or 2.5 per cent - for the December quarter. “Despite the growth, Pakenham is still one of Melbourne’s more affordable suburbs as of 31 December,” he said. “It has dropped down the list a bit. But it was on the list for most of 2014. “It’s in a very good position in terms of access to local amenities, schools, shops and to the coastal areas and rural land also. “We expect Pakenham to be very popular in 2015, so it may well drop out of the list.” Angela and Lindsay McDonald, who recently sold their Pak-
enham property, said they were amazed at the price they sold for. “It was more than what we expected,” Angela said. “It was quite a surprise for us. “I was concerned that the time of year wasn’t right for selling when compared to spring but as it turned out, it didn’t matter.” It took the McDonalds only six days to sell their property on Amberley Drive and in that time they were presented with five contracts. “We were very impressed by the numbers that came through,” Mrs McDonald said. “The property went on the market on Thursday and by Saturday afternoon we had 13 people view the property.” However, it has been difficult to buy for some. Suresh and Maheshika Kanavitage, who purchased the McDonald family home, said they had been looking to buy for eight months. “We’ve been looking for a long time,” Mrs Kanavitage said. “We were lucky we got this house. “Over the eight months of searching, we’ve seen lots of properties but when I saw this house, I said I want to buy this one. “We had put an offer on another house but missed out, so we were determined to get this one. “I love Pakenham. We’ve been living here for four months and we can’t wait to become part of the community.”

BEACONHILLS College students have earned the most Top Designs awards in systems engineering of any school in Victoria. Michael Cochrane and James Howell from the Pakenham campus received the highest accolades in the annual VCE Season of Excellence awards and their projects will be exhibited at the Melbourne Museum from 21 March to 12 July. The Season of Excellence comprises 12 concerts, two exhibitions and multiple screenings of short films and includes work from the most outstanding VCE projects from the previous year. Howell won for his unique laser harp and Cochrane for a glove-controlled robot. Another Pakenham campus student, Ryland Lack-Powell, won for his dance performance. The college has a strong history in technology subjects, winning an astounding total of 32 VCE Season of Excellence awards - or Premier’s Awards - in just the Top Designs category alone over the past 15 years. Beaconhills College headmaster Tony Sheumack said the school had now established its reputation as a strong leader in technology subjects such as systems engineering. “That’s not to forget the consistently high number of students making it to the shortlist in Top Class (Performing Arts), as well as other subjects such as media and visual communication design,” he said. “It really reflects our diverse and engaging curriculum and the passion of the students undertaking these amazing VCE projects, many which represent hours of work.” Meanwhile, Pakenham campus student Monique Kay also had her photography chosen to exhibit in Top Shots - a prestigious exhibition held at the Monash Gallery of Art.

A HAMPTON Park road cloaked in tragedy after two fatal car accidents claimed the lives of five people in 2009 has finally been upgraded. A Casey community still reeling from the devastating heartbreak of six years ago last week welcomed the completion of the $40 million upgrade to the section of Hallam Road between Pound and Ormond roads where five young lives were lost in two weeks. Narre Warren P-12 students and friends Riyani Lowen, 16, Anja Miller, 15, and Joel Brimble, 19, and a fourth teenager in another vehicle were all killed in the two-car collision at the intersection of Hallam and Ormond roads in the early hours of 28 June 2009. A fortnight later as she drove past an improvised roadside memorial for the lost teenagers, a 21-year-old woman was killed instantly when her car was hit by a B-double truck at the same intersection. Local residents who have been campaigning for the road’s duplication since before 2009 gathered with state MPs last Friday to acknowledge the upgrade. Work on the duplication, which was finally opened to traffic in late-December 2014, started in 2012 and saw a widening of part of the road from two lanes to three as well as the introduction of intersection and traffic signals. Ms Maliki welcomed the new road but insisted there was still more work to be done and more sections that needed duplication. “The tragedy of losing five kids down that road was devastating for the community,” she said. “Out of everything I want them recognised as the reason the road was pushed to be done. “We did what needed to be done to save it from happening again.” Ms Maliki, who has six children, was greatly touched by the tragedies, knowing it could easily have been her kids who
lost their lives. “A price was paid and the families involved are still suffering every day from that,” she said. “It’s great that section has been fixed but it should have been done before.” Emma Lowen, Riyani’s mother, echoed the sentiments of her friend Ms Maliki. She has never gone back to the intersection where her daughter died. “To be honest, my first reaction was that it was sad that it took the kids to die to get it to be done up to this safe stage,” Ms Lowen said. “It doesn’t invoke anything for me but the people of Hampton Park will be that little bit safer now. “It’s good that’s it done.”

Ms Williams said her main concern was safety. “We have three small children,” she said. “We will have no privacy at all and they’re asking us to take it all away.” City of Casey manager Planning, Duncan Turner, advised that a report will be considered by council on Tuesday 17 February regarding this matter, which will outline the history of this agreement and provide options for residents and council to consider moving forward.

He said as part of the agreement there was supposed to be a tree reserve planted in place of fencing. “To take away the back fence and 20 metres of each side fence would mean you could walk down and look left or right and see into people’s backyards,” he said. “That’s a dangerous move to make.” “I am hoping a sensible solution can be reached and that is that we

He said while some families had decided to leave their properties open, others had gone to great lengths to protect their privacy. “It’s changed from rural to residential and with residential and roads you need protection for kids and families,” Cr Ablett said. “Living on a farm is different, but if you have a main road seven or eight metres from your back fence, you’re entitled to a back fence.”

A GROUP of residents bound by a council agreement may be forced to tear down their fences after the City of Casey council has threatened legal action against them. Seven land owners in the Botanic Ridge estate may be stripped of their privacy due to the Section 173 agreement that was created before the area became residential. Balla Balla Ward Councillor Geoff Ablett raised the issue in urgent business at a council meeting last week and asked that council investigate, reconsidering the agreement. “Many years ago, before Botanic Ridge was in Urban Growth Boundary, someone decided that if it’s to be developed, we want to retain a rural aspect,” Cr Ablett said. “At that time, nobody gave any thought to what if a child walked out and on to the road.” Most of the houses concerned are near or along Brown’s Road or Pearcedale Road. Cr Ablett said the issue was twofold, creating both safety and security concerns. Some families had purchased a house in this area with fences already erected, including the Williams family who were not aware of the agreement. Michelle Williams, who lives along Pearcedale Road, said her family purchased their house at the start of last year and were unaware of the agreement. “We moved in in January and got a letter in September,” she said. “You don’t expect to buy a house and eight months later get a letter to say you have done something illegal.”

I AM writing about the Casey Council. Who in the planning department is the genius who has given the green light to a new subdivision off Centre Road? This subdivision is called Alira. This whole area is the flood plain for the Hallam main drain. About four years ago after torrential rain in a single night, this whole area was four feet under water. The CranbourneNarre Warren Road was closed to all traffic for a week. Who can forget the submerged taxi abandoned on this road? Horses on the adjoining properties had to be rescued and moved to higher ground. Are the people who intend to buy here to be advised that they will be subjected to more than rising damp? Are the developers hoping that their clients will all come from outside Casey and will know nothing about the problems they will face if they buy here? Are the houses all to be Queenslanders, lifting them out of danger? Are there boats to be handed out in case of flood? Someone in council is responsible for this potential debacle? SES relief vital I HAVE been informed that the Narre Warren SES will be attending Casey Council on 13 February to submit a proposal for more council funding, and to seek out more council land in and around the Cranbourne area due to the ever- expanding Casey community . With over 900 call outs in the past year, this organisation is a vital cog in emergency assistance in and around the City of Casey. AN ANTI-BULLYING and youth suicide prevention charity will colour locals in happiness with its upcoming fund-raiser. Not-for-profit organisation Don’t Bully is a family funded charity which acts in support of local youths. Pre-empting the criminals By BRIDGET SCOTT A NEW police unit that will operate out of the Cranbourne police station will aim to target crime before it occurs. A proactive police unit, which will incorporate officers from the City of Casey, Cardinia Shire and Greater Dadenong, will focus on crime prevention in these municipalities. Sergeant in charge of the unit Melissa Blair said police would aim to ensure people did not become victims. She said police would target areas where offences had taken place, and would provide local residents with crime prevention material. Sgt Blair said the focus would be theft from motor vehicles which was the “highest rating crime in the southern metro division”. “It’s an initiative to try and get people to take responsibility for their items, in this case being cars,” she said. Sgt Blair said the idea was to discourage people from leaving valuable items in their car, adding that these items attracted would-be thieves. “Remove the product from visibility and the crooks will walk straight past,” she said. Sgt Blair also urged people to lock their cars and said leaving it unlocked, “doubles the

Teachers should ASIST By LACHLAN MOORHEAD FEDERAL MP Anthony Byrne has declared his support for two Berwick women as they launch a petition to make it mandatory for all Victorian high school teachers to undertake mental health first aid training. Fawn Brady lost her 23-yearold brother and closest companion, Kane, in February 2013 after a battle with depression, and has been campaigning ever since to prevent further tragedies. In August of the same year Fawn, 27, set up Kane’s Crusade with best friend Jess White, a depression support and awareness group specialising in, but not restricted to, helping young men. This month the pair officially launched a petition they hope to deliver to state parliament, calling for new laws to be promulgated in Victoria which would make it mandatory for all secondary school teachers to undertake Applied Suicide Intervention Skill Training (ASIST). Holt MP Anthony Byrne said Fawn and Jess were inspirational young women who have; “bravely responded to a terrible personal tragedy by working to prevent mental illness in the Casey region.” “They are working tirelessly to raise awareness of depression and its brutal cost of lost lives and livelihoods,” he said. “Their efforts should be proudly supported by the entire local community.” Fawn and Jess, who met as teenagers at Berwick Secondary College, need the petitions to be handwritten and hope to have 50,000 by Easter to present to a State MP to table in Victorian Parliament. Fawn, who along with Jess has completed the ASIST program, said the training was aimed at
teaching people to look after those who were reaching “crisis point”. “We find a lot of people have been trained in dealing with postsuicide situations, but there are not enough services for teachers to be equipped with the skills to help someone who is suicidal,” she said.

A LYNBROOK woman who has presided over many local organisations was rewarded for her hard work on Australia Day. Rita Hartney was awarded the Casey Senior Citizen of the Year Award, however she isn’t sure whether or not to be more excited about this or her new radio show. The 80-year-old retiree works harder than many others her age, and has just started ‘Hot topics with Rita’ at Casey Radio. Every Monday from 1pm until 3pm, Rita is joined by other local women who take part in
her talk-back show. “I want my program to help empower women,” she said. “I want to get women involved and thinking.” An author of two books, the volunteer is heavily involved at Balla Balla and Hallam Community centres. Ms Hartney’s first involvement with the City of Casey was when she became part of the Women of Note Mentor Breakfast Program. Not long after her involvement, Ms Hartney’s refined public speaking skills allowed her to become the president and chair of the group. “That was my first involve-
ment with the City of Casey,” she said. She has also chaired what is now the Casey Neighbourhood Watch group, and has served on the board of the Narre Warren Community Learning Centre. Ms Hartney said she did not think of her work as volunteering. “You get paid in satisfaction,” she said. “People ask when I am going to retire and I tell them I already have - I always work hard.” Tune into 97.7fm to hear Ms Hartney’s new program. “I hope to get the show well underway,” she said.

By BRIDGET SCOTT A GROUP of clowns is taking the term laughter to a new level and helping spread happiness to those who might not have something to smile about. The Humanitarian Clowns Inc. is a charitable organisation with the motto -‘creating change in a colourful way.’ Created by Pearcedale resident Tim Webster, the funnyman came up with the concept after he attended a Caring Clown Trip to Costa Rica where he witnessed first-hand the positive effects humanitarian clowning can have on people. Mr Webster said the group was officially recognised as a charity in June last year and worked with people all across the world.
“We currently have the compassionate clowning that works with local nursing homes and charities,” he said. He also spoke about the Tyler Shaw program which was created after a young girl lost her life in a car accident in Mount Eliza. “We are now providing assistance to families that go through hardship, due to loss of life or severe illness,” he said. Mr Webster said the group had annual, international trips and worked with communities across the world, including Vellore, Tamil Nadu, in India. “We take 20 people from around the world to India to work and head to the slums where they have the opportunity to work with people in need,”
he said. Humanitarian Clowns aims to support local non-government organisations by combining their clowning. Mr Webster said the dream was to one day have mental health workers and people from different welfare organisations to assist with referral. He said they also hoped to work with other youth centres and run free circus workshops. “We are in the beginning process and need $30,000,” he said. “We are working with the committee at the moment and throwing ideas around.” Worldwide, Humanitarian Clowns has more than 200 volunteers.

A CRANBOURNE medical clinic raised much-needed funds for the Leukaemia Foundation on Saturday with a family fun day out. Ceri Small said the event at the Duff Street Medical Clinic managed to raise $900 for the cause. “For a first attempt, it wasn’t too bad,” she said. “The kids had fun and that’s the main thing.” The clinic hosted a variety of entertainment which included a magician, animals, face painting and a sausage sizzle. Spencer said involvement in OMNI, facilitated by leaders from the Council on the Ageing Victoria (COTA), reaps significant benefits for those involved. “They feel a clear sense of direction and purpose in their lives,” he said. “This then leads to a greater willingness to become involved in family and community events.
“Wives and others report improved companionship and reduced time spent in isolation.” Spencer also helps others address this feeling of isolation through his involvement with the Casey-Cardinia Men’s Health Action Group, one of a growing number of local initiatives in the municipality which actively promotes better health. SPENCER Wanklyn wasn’t the first person to notice how men didn’t speak to each other the way women did. But he was someone who did something about it. He recognised the void, felt particularly by men in retirement, which became unbearable unless they learned how to talk about what they were going through. In 2007, Spencer was pivotal in setting up the Older Men New Ideas (OMNI) discussion groups throughout Casey, assisted by friend and fellow volunteer John Doutch. The OMNI group sessions specifically for men aged over 50 and which meet in Narre Warren, Cranbourne East and Blind Bight as well as a range of other locations throughout Australia - allow older men the chance to address issues in their lives that may have increasingly become problematic. “The isolation and loneliness most men experience, even in the company of others, is relieved by appearing from ‘behind the mask’ and letting go of the competition and fear developed from years in their workplace and its culture,” Spencer, who co-ordinates the Cranbourne East OMNI group, said. “Many men acknowledge in their OMNI group, this is the first time in their lives they have experienced this new type of relationship with other men. “Members have shown an increased interest in retirement,

Back-to-back Platinum status CASEY ARC has one again been recognised as one of the premier pools in the region. The Narre Warren facility has been awarded Life Saving Victoria’s (LSV) prized Platinum Pool Award for the second consecutive year, becoming only the fifth Victorian aquatic facility to receive the honour since a new assessment process was put in place. Platinum Pool status is awarded to facilities that have achieved the highest standards in aquatic safety and risk management. “There is a big push to provide swim skills to as many children as possible at the moment,” Casey ARC manager Travis Sauer said. “And with LSV acknowledging Casey ARC as a high standard and safe place to be, we’re aiming to grow our programs - especially swimming lessons.” Mr Sauer said that the YMCA was focusing on reducing drowning deaths, with a campaign to raise awareness. “It’s surprising who can’t swim. It could be a family member, close friend or the kid next door who’s at risk and it’s never too late to learn,” he said. “We teach children vital swimming and personal survival skills, not just for the pool, but for rivers, lakes and the ocean.” Casey ARC offers swimming lessons to infants from six months through to adults of any age. Novel learning LEARNING for Life has been the Berwick Lodge Primary School’s motto since it opened in 1990 and it is as relevant today as then. The programs reflect the changing learning needs of students and also the relationships between schools and the wider community. For example, the whole school LOTE (Mandarin) program is designed to ensure that students have every opportunity to capitalise on the changing dynamic in this region. Robotics, another current program has seen students from Berwick Lodge represent Australia internationally. The field of robotics is truly exciting and the future of humankind in many people’s opinions will be tied increasingly with robots as time passes. On alternate years, senior students visit the partner school in Singapore, in recognition of the importance of providing students with a global education. The school is finding better ways to engaging with its local community to deliver educationally on the promises made. MEMBERS of the Hampton Park Networking Group (HPNG) were over the moon to be formally recognised for one of their major events of the year. The Annual Hampton Park Central Multicultural Food Festival won the Casey Community Event of the Year Award for 2014. The event brings together communities throughout the region to celebrate cultural diversity.
Event manager for the group Vanassa Gerdes said this was the first major award for the HPNG. Members of the HPNG issued letters throughout the community prior to the event to encourage other groups to be involved. They helped more than 20 people get their food handling certificates one and two. “The festival provides an opportunity to embrace our common values by sharing
food, dance and singing,” Vanassa said. “It brings the atmosphere alive and bonds people together as food is the heart of people and music and dance is the universal language of love.” The next upcoming event for the group is the Kitchen Rulz Bake-off on Sunday 18 April. Tennis proves a hit in town By BRIDGET SCOTT CITY of Casey residents were served up a variety of activities last week when Tennis Week hit the town. Between Sunday 1 and Sunday 8 February there were 27 activities held at various locations and tennis clubs across the municipality, where people could get involved in tennis, get active and have fun. The City of Casey held its very own totem tennis activity on Wednesday 4 February which saw different people from nearby stop to have a hit. City of Casey mayor Mick Morland said Casey Tennis Week, now in its seventh year, gave local people the chance to enjoy the sport and get back on the court.

Passion for jewellery A CRANBOURNE jeweller, which was the first store of its kind to open in the suburb more than 40 years ago, has just re-opened its doors. South Gippsland Jewellers, which now lies in the Cranbourne Park complex, closed down for a short period of time for renovations. However its doors are wide open once again and visitors to the store may just find it isn’t quite the same as before. Owner Toni said it was time to embrace what was happening to the complex around them. “We felt it was important for our store to have a major refurbishment to coincide with the new centre,” she said. “We were shut down for a few weeks but are open just in time for Valentine’s Day.” South Gippsland Jewellers moved into the complex in 1980 and is now excited to announce a new logo, new furniture and a revamped store. The store is also set to stock a unique diamond, the Passion Eight and Toni believes her store may be one of very few, possibly the only store to be able to offer the gem. Cranbourne Park is currently undergoing major renovations and is set to welcome a number of new brands and stores to its complex.

Race workers cross the finish line SANDOWN Racecourse’s garden and grounds workers clocked off for the final time last Friday. On 15 January 34 workers at the Sandown and Caulfield tracks learnt that Melbourne Racing Club (MRC) would contract out their jobs from 1 February. The announcement followed six months of enterprise bargaining agreement (EBA) negotiations. Australian Workers Union (AWU) Victorian secretary Ben Davis said that the final eight employees at Sandown finished up on Friday. “All 34 of them are so disenchanted and embittered that they don’t want to work there anymore,” he said. “They feel that they can’t work there anymore. They’ve decided to move on. “I’m deeply saddened by it, deeply troubled by it, but it’s their decision, it’s their working lives.” Two workers had given more than 40 years’ service to the track and many more had 20-plus years under their belts. “All this club thinks about is money, not the trauma and stress that they cause,” one worker said. Another said that the MRC had offered a zero per cent pay rise over three years during negotiations “which basically equates to a pay cut”. He said the MRC encouraged employees to apply for a job with the contractor. “The pay will be half the money we’re earning now and the conditions won’t be the same,” he said. “We fought for years to get these conditions and pay.” An MRC spokesman said the decision followed a broader 18-month efficiency review to tackle rising losses in its racing business, which topped $6 million per annum in recent years. He said MRC was forced to explore other options because the AWU made unreasonable demands. - CASEY NEILL

Dog cruelty probe backed By LACHLAN MOORHEAD A CASEY-based employee of the Animal Cruelty Hotline has welcomed the Victorian Government’s investigation into the Lost Dogs’ Home. The Lost Dogs’ Home, which has a South Eastern Pound Service in Cranbourne, has been battered by public outrage in the last month with accusations of wrongful and unnecessary euthanasia of its animals. Agriculture Minister Jaala Pulford has since announced a departmental investigation into the Lost Dogs’ Home, which provides pound services for a number of Victorian councils including Casey. It’s understood authorised officers are currently investigating the Lost Dogs’ Home and are expected to report back to Ms Pulford within weeks. Animal Cruelty Hotline senior investigations officer Barrie Tapp, from Cranbourne, said the investigation was long overdue.
“I welcome the inquiry, it’s been needed for a long time,” Mr Tapp said. “This is only the tip of the iceberg. “This issue has been brewing and festering for some time, the Pound Alliance has been pushing this for years and finally we have a minister who has the guts to do something.” Casey Council has also backed the State Government’s review. City of Casey manager Community Safety Caroline Bell said the council would also back any review into the standards of animal care in the state. “The City of Casey takes the welfare of animals very seriously,” Ms Bell said. “Casey is one of the few local governments in Victoria whose staff involved in animal management are authorised under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, and the first Council in Victoria to successfully prosecute a puppy farm in its municipality.

With looks of determination on their faces, Tooradin Primary School students competed well in a variety of swimming events yesterday (11 February). The sun shone brightly on the future swimming stars who took part in freestyle, breast stroke, back stroke and butterfly events. While most people had a dip, teacher Rachel Davis said some were lucky enough to earn a place that would allow them to progress into the next level at the district swimming sports next week. “As students compete in each level, they experience the challenge of swimming against students from across the district, getting to feel the pride of representing their school and achieving their own personal goals,” she said. “Staff and students all returned to school with excited stories about their adventures in the pool and wearing their array of winning ribbons.”

Under State Government legislation, residents are required to register their pets by 10 April each year. Warriors unmasked By RUSSELL BENNETT A NEW era in Pakenham Warriors basketball will begin on-court this Saturday. The Big V Division 2 outfit will take to its home floor, ‘The Coliseum’ at Cardinia Life, this weekend for its first practice game in the lead-up to the new season. And there’s a raft of new faces both in the playing, and the coaching ranks - for fans to get used to. Some of the inaugural women’s Big V roster has begun to filter through, with Melinda Magdich, Kylie Thomson, Courtney Dickson, Chloe Marten, Vanessa Westh, Natalie Bjelan, Kelly Richardson and Jaime Armstrong set to form the bulk of a strong nucleus. On the men’s side, guard Pat Golong and big man Simon Lokan have also been linked to the club. Golong is a 193cm (6 foot 4 inches in old currency) athletic guard with an impressive leap and the ability to finish under contact at the rim, while Lokan is a 205.7cm (6 foot 9inches) forward who averaged 6.4 points and 6.1 rebounds for the Willetton Tigers in Western Australia’s State Basketball League in the 2013 season - one in which he had double-doubles of 18 points and 11 rebounds, 10 and 12, and 15 and 11. Warriors’ coaching director Darrell Morgan, 24, predicted an exciting season ahead, adding that a premium had been placed on player fitness in an attempt to avoid any horror runs with injury. “There’s a culture of everyone playing for each other and staying in great shape is definitely part of that,” he said.

Narre Warren South’s Macdonald brothers - Connor and Brodie - ran, leapt and threw their way to success at the state-wide event as the siblings earning a bronze medal each in the multi-event earlier this month in Moe. Multi-events act like junior pentathlons, with Connor and Brodie a competing in the 100m sprint, 800m, 80m hurdles, long jump and discus. “State Multis we went down to Moe and I did the 100, 800, long jump, 80m hurdles and discus and ended up coming third which is a good job,” Connor said. “Overall I ended up coming third - felt great,” Brodie said. Connor’s multi medal is another welcome addition to his trophy cabinet this summer, having competed in Penguin, Tasmania late last year in the School Sport Australia Junior Track and Field Championships.

“Silver at national titles out of the whole of Australia in the multi-event - where I had to do the 100, 800 long jump, shot put. “Went in the medley relay - start off with a 200 - I did the first leg - then I passed it to another kid named Monty, then a 100 and another kid brought it home for a 300 to win it.” The Macdonalds are a perennial fixture at Cranbourne Little Athletics Centre, which competed against Pakenham Little Athletics Centre on Saturday in their annual showdown.

Resuming at a perilous 4/6 at the start of the second day’s play, the home side lost young gun Zac Chaplin for a duck early, before Bradey Welsh and Russell Lehman combined for a 100-run stand to steady the ship. Lehman recorded his seventh score of 35 or above this season with a superb unbeaten 63, while Welsh (60) scored his second half-century of the season. The two were batting down the order, with some of the Lions’ younger brigade getting a chance in the top five. “We were always going to give the young boys a bat up the order anyway,” Lions skipper Jason Williams said. “(But) a few doubts were starting to creep in, and we could have been seven or eight down for not many but Welshy and Russ batted a treat. “We knew we had the 80 overs to bat. I just told the boys to bat the time and put away the bad balls. “Bradey was dropped twice, but he was really disciplined and Russ was just in that mind frame that he was going to bat all day.” Williams, who finished on 24 not out, paid credit to the Beaconsfield attack, which he said made life
