String of charges By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS AN ice-using jockey has ridden the lowsecurity ‘payWave’ technology to make a string of purchases with stolen credit cards. A court was told on Monday that James Ronald Dentith, 41, of Cranbourne, and a female co-accused went on a spendingspree using credit cards they stole from a car parked at a Mordiallic hotel on 16 December, Using the ‘tap-and-go’ mechanism, the pair racked up nearly $500 of purchases in several hours - including petrol, groceries, perfume and alcohol - before two attempted transactions were declined. On 12 December, the pair used another stolen credit card to buy more than $100 of petrol, alcohol and groceries in Endeavour Hills, Hallam and Hampton Park. Police prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Tracey Arnold told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court that Dentith was also a passenger in a stolen car driven by the co-accused on 18 December, and he was pulled over driving a car with stolen number plates in Hampton Park on 6 January. Dentith, who had been in remand for the past 26 days, was scheduled to re-apply for bail on Monday. At the hearing, he opted to plead guilty to all 16 charges including several drug, driving unlicensed and traffic offences arising from last year. Police found Dentith in possession of the drug ice and a drug cutting agent last year. He told police he used illicit drugs to help keep his weight down as a jockey, Leading Sen Const Arnold said. Dentith’s lawyer told court her client had been using ‘ice’ as a substitute for his prescribed medication. The lawyer said Dentith’s partner-incrime had confessed to be “the brains” behind the credit-card operation; Dentith, a non-drinker, benefitted little from the alcohol and cosmetics purchases.
He was driving unlicensed during a time when he was homeless and kept his belongings in his car, his lawyer told court. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen, who had refused Dentith bail last month, said the accused’s chronic bipolar condition was compounded by drug use. The offences mirrored 130 charges faced by the accused in 1998, including theft, burglary and property-by-deception, he said. The court had been told Dentith’s criminal history in the 1990s was linked to a heroin addiction, which had been since successfully treated. “Now I’m sentencing for another 16 (offences),” Mr Vandersteen said. “The question is whether 26 days (served in remand) is enough.” The magistrate said Dentith’s health had visibly deteriorated in custody, and extending his jail time would not help address his “underlying issues“. Mr Vandersteen placed Dentith on a community-corrections order including drug-abuse and mental health treatment, and disqualified him from driving for 12 months. A Racing Victoria spokeswoman said stewards were awaiting a full report on Dentith’s court appearance before deciding upon his status as a registered stablehand. In March, Racing Victoria stewards banned Dentith for three months from riding trackwork for testing positive to a banned substance at Cranbourne Training Centre. The racing authority stated at the time that stewards took into account Dentith’s “clean record in this area” as well as “the high level of the banned substances detected”. After his suspension, he was registered as a stablehand ahead of the 2014-’15 racing season upon passing a drug-free urine sample. He was not permitted to ride horses at training.

Hotel’s council cheque in By BRIDGET SCOTT A HOTEL has been suggested as a replacement for the existing council chambers land once the new Casey Cultural Precinct is opened. Councillor Amanda Stapledon put forward the idea at a council meeting on Tuesday night and said she “wanted to get the conversations started”. She said she was made aware of the limited amount of local accommodation during a regional event of the Balla Balla Lion’s club. “There were plenty of homestays but accommodation was little throughout Cranbourne,” she said. Cr Stapledon said she believed the benefit of extra local accommodation would be two-fold. “It would bring added benefit to the economy in Casey and to the new precinct,” she said. “In terms of accommodation, it would be ideal for someone visiting the Casey Cultural Precinct or going to an event as they would be able to stay overnight.” “I am looking to explore it at this stage.”
Cr Stapledon said she was aware that council officers had looked into the issue of lack of accommodation and explored possible solutions. “With my way of thinking this is the perfect location,” she said. “Shoppers who come from the country can simply treat themselves to a night out. “People can go to the precinct then walk across the road to their accommodation.” Cr Stapledon asked for a briefing to come back to councillors by the first council meeting in June. She asked that it explore the potential of utilising the existing council chambers, once vacated to occupy the Casey Cultural Precinct, to become a hotel/serviced apartment accommodation precinct to meet a significant deficiency in overnight accommodation within the City of Casey. The council passed her motion and Cr Stapledon received the full support of her colleagues. The new precinct is due to open in 2017.
POLICE believe a fire in Lawson Poole Reserve, Cranbourne, on Tuesday 27 January was deliberately lit. Emergency services were called to the reserve on the corner of the South Gippsland Highway and Thompsons Road about 5am. The grass and scrub fire burnt out an area of 10 metres by five metres and CFA crews extinguished the fire. Police have warned that serious charges would be brought against anyone who deliberately lights a fire in the open during the summer. Barista gives it his best shot for the McTitle A COFFEE connoisseur will take his knowledge to the next level today (Thursday) as he gets set to compete against McDonald’s best baristas from Victoria and Tasmania. Harrison Carter from Cranbourne is one of six in the competition being held at McDonald’s in Fawkner. The winner will compete in the 2015 Da Vinci Coffee Chain Championships in March at the Melbourne International Coffee Expo. Harrison said has to give a presentation and talk about his passion, knowledge and skills as a barista. “I am being judged and marked against the rules and regulations of the championships,” he said. “This year it is all about the skills and preparing the barista for competition.” Previously at the Cranbourne McDonald’s, the 25-year-old now manages the McCafe at the Carrum Downs branch and said this was his first job as a barista. “I have developed all my skills from McDonald’s,” he said. “I’ve had some good trainers.” This is the first time he will take his skills to competition level and said he had been looking forward to the event. “I’ve never really had the opportunity to showcase my skills before. “I think that it’s a great chance given the platform that the McCafe has provided.” Winners will be announced at 6pm tonight. - BRIDGET SCOTT

Shed up in flames A BACKYARD shed was destroyed in a fire at a home along Ruffy Road in Cranbourne last week. About noon on Wednesday 28 January, a fire was ignited due to a faulty television. Neighbours called in authorities after they saw flames and plumes of smoke coming from the shed. Police said the shed had been converted into a living quarters and the fire was not suspicious.

A BURNT-OUT car was found at the end of a dirt road in Botanic Ridge, Cranbourne, on Saturday 31 January. Police found the stolen vehicle around 7am and said it was totally destroyed. The CFA also attended the scene. Anyone with more information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Little ones - big step WITH backpacks bigger than their bodies and shoe laces tied tight, this past week was a big step for many young ones throughout the City of Casey. It was also a memorable week for many mums and dads, as hundreds of children set off on their first day of primary school. The News photographers were there to capture the memorable moments at many of the municipality’s schools, including Tooradin Primary School, Coral Park Primary School and Cranbourne West Primary School. Tooradin and Coral Park were the first cabs off the rank and welcomed their new and excited pupils on Thursday 29 January. The boys and girls got to know their new classmates and most importantly, inspected the new playground.
Cranbourne West did things a little differently and welcomed its girls on Thursday, followed by the boys on Friday. Tooradin Primary School welcomed 48 new Preps, and Early Years co-ordinator at the school Rachel Davies said the new pupils settled in well. “With only a few tears and most of those were from the parents,” she said. Buddied up with the senior children at the school, Ms Davies put the easy start down to an important program at Tooradin. “A large part of the smooth start to the Preps’ first day at school was due to Tooradin Primary School’s Learning Links,” she said. The pre-prep operation runs during the fourth term in the year before they start and helps ease parents and children into the school community.

Eyes out for crime By BRIDGET SCOTT A SUB-BRANCH of the Casey Neighbourhood Watch has been created following high rates of crime reported in an area within the City of Casey. Residents from the Marriott Waters estate, Lyndhurst, have joined forces to create a sub-committee following a number of break-ins and attempted break-ins throughout their area. A meeting was held in the estate last Thursday night to get wheels in motion for the new group which would act under the Casey Neighbourhood Watch. Resident and chairperson of the new group Karen Keeble said they had noticed an up and down spike in crime rates within the estate. She said a residents’ Facebook page helped people keep up-to-date with any recent crime. “About a year ago, there were break-ins on a nightly basis,” she said. Ms Keeble said her own home was broken into and robbed within their first two weeks in the estate.

Nearly 50 concerned residents attended the meeting, and Ms Keeble said there was already a small group of people prepared to be on the committee. “People want to get behind it and get it moving,” she said. “It’s important for the community and myself that it becomes a thing of the future.” Cranbourne Police Officer Brett Owen was among those to get behind the new group and will help the cause through his role in the new Proactive Police Operation. “I welcome this sub-committee and we will work with them to reduce crime,” he said. “Something like this will help us educate the community in protecting themselves against crime and implementing their own strategies,” he said.

RE: News article ‘Injured in Attack’ (News, 22 January). I am writing in reference to the above and would like to take issue with a 64-year-old being described as ‘elderly.’ I am 65 and most of my friends around the same age. YEARS ago I was a nurse in the British Army in Germany and a nurse's first propriety is to help people. Today 28 January I was on my way home from shopping at Fountain Gate and as I crossed over the railway tracks at Narre Warren Station I pointed out to my wife an old man lying face down on the footpath. I don’t know if he fell or collapsed but very unfortunately I was unable to stop because some idiot driver was right behind me, but I wondered just how long the man had been there and why nobody had stopped to give assistance. A FIVE-MONTH-OLD girl and her young cousin have motivated a Cranbourne North man to raise funds for sick children. Steven Pope hopes to raise $30,000 for the Good Friday Appeal through his charity Bucks for Bubs. He said his five-year-old niece had tuberous sclerosis and had been in and out of the Royal Children’s Hospital since she was born. He donated $100 each year to the Good Friday appeal but wanted to increase his contribution since his daughter Olivia was born five months ago. “If something did happen to my daughter, I’d know my contribution could help,” he said. Mr Pope has sold about 270 seats for the Bucks for Bubs trivia night at Berwick Leisure Centre on 21 February, but hopes to sell about a dozen more tables. He has also received an overwhelming response of support from local businesses but said
any more donations would be greatly appreciated. “I have also received a huge amount of donations from local businesses and businesses from Facebook and have been quite overwhelmed from the support I have received. “I have had ASTRA billiards in Dandenong donate a $4000 billiard table as well as MCKD Kitchens donate a $3000 kitchen renovation,” he said. “We would like to get more donations to make this night a big success. “It doesn’t have to be anything big - just things we can sell in auctions or raffles.” Mr Pope said all donations could be made through the charity’s Facebook page, https:// www.facebook.com/bucksforbubs or by emailing him directly through bucksforbubs@gmail. com. More than $258 million have been donated towards new equipment and research at the Royal Children’s Hospital since the Good Friday Appeal was launched in 1931.

Dog cruelty review By LACHLAN MOORHEAD CASEY Council has thrown its support behind the impending State Government review of the Lost Dogs’ Home. Based in North Melbourne, the Lost Dogs’ Home with a Pound Service in Cranbourne, has been battered by public outrage in the last month with accusations of wrongful and unnecessary euthanasia of its animals. Agriculture Minister Jaala Pulford has since announced a depart-
mental investigation into the Lost Dogs’ Home, which provides pound services for 13 Victorian councils including Casey. City of Casey manager Community Safety Caroline Bell said the council would back any review into the standards of animal care in the state. “The City of Casey takes the welfare of animals very seriously,” she said. “Casey is one of the few local governments in Victoria whose staff
involved in animal management are authorised under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, and the first council in Victoria to successfully prosecute a puppy farm in its municipality. “While the review announced by the State Government is focused around the North Melbourne pound, we support any review into standards of animal care in Victoria, ensuring the highest standards are being adhered to as outlined in the Domestic Animals
Act and Codes of Practice.” Chair of the Lost Dogs’ Home Dr Andrew Tribe told The Age last month the shelter would review its policies and practices with the aim of reducing the number of animals euthanised. Casey Council has had a contract with the Lost Dogs’ Home since June 2011. Between 1 January and 31 December last year, 1534 dogs and 945 cats were impounded from the municipality.

IT IS believed that two armed robberies at separate service stations in Narre Warren and Hampton Park this month are linked. Around 2.40am on Monday 2 January, an attendant at a service station along Narre WarrenCranbourne Road allowed one male to enter the store, followed by two other men who stole cash. Later on the same night around 3am, three men entered a BP in Hampton Park along Ormond Road. The men were armed with a knife and stole money.
Scissor stabbing A 37-YEAR-old woman was stabbed in the chest with a pair of scissors just before 3am on Sunday 1 February. Police were called to a house along Alma Road, Hampton Park after the female was attacked. The attack occurred after a verbal altercation between her and the 31-year-old male offender.

Triple joy at school debut HALLAM triplets Charlee, Harry and Shay were all smiles when they started school last week. The new students, who started at Oatlands Primary in Narre Warren, smiled even more this week when Channel 7 news filmed them getting ready for the big day. Mum Nicole Tumbas said her triplets hadn’t quite understood what she meant when she told them they were going to be on television, but they were soon
having fun in front of the cameras. “The kids were so excited, they like being on camera,” Ms Tumbas said. “I think they’re so used to me taking photos of them since they were very young - I was like the paparazzi.” Ms Tumbas said Charlee, Harry and Shay had loved their first day of school, for which fate had landed them all in the same Prep class.
“They had a great day, they’re loving it,” she said. “They’ve settled in pretty well.” Oatlands Primary School principal Wes Holloway said Charlee, Harry and Shay were one of two groups of triplets starting at the school this year, in addition to several pairs of twins. Release caps off badge theft By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A MAN convicted of stealing furniture and a Cranbourne police officer’s cap badge, belt and buckle was released on Monday after serving 142 days in remand. A court was told that Mark Sutherland, 39, of Cranbourne, claimed he had organised buying the police paraphernalia on trading website Gumtree though he couldn’t produce a receipt. Police had found the haul in Sutherland’s drawer as well as the stolen furniture at a Cranbourne rental share-home during a raid on 7 February last year. Police prosecutor Senior Constable Chris Capuano told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Monday that Sutherland and a co-accused had stolen a small trailer from a Cranbourne East residence in December 2013. Sutherland returned the trailer the next day after learning it was owned by an “as-
sociate known to the accused” - though some of the trailer’s contents including a sledgehammer, router and extension lead remained missing, Sen Const Capuano said. The accused denied knowledge of the incident or knowing the co-accused, but admitted owning a blue Statesman similar to that captured on the victim’s CCTV during the theft, Sen Const Capuano said. He had failed to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 4 September over the alleged theft, the court was told. Last year, Sutherland had also been intercepted driving unlicensed in a car carrying weapons such as a baton which doubled as a torch, and two “fantasy knives” that could be combined as one weapon. On another occasion he was intercepted driving a vehicle with stolen number plates. Inside was found a large hunting knife and amphetamines. The charges arose while Sutherland was serving a com-
munity corrections order. Defence lawyer Raphael de Vietri conceded that Sutherland’s compliance with the CCO was “not good” during a time when the father-of-two lacked stable accommodation. Mr de Vietri said Sutherland’s 142 days in custody was “sufficient penalty”, arguing to continue his community corrections order was not in “my client’s best interests”. Sutherland had a longstanding history of drug-use stemming from “significant tragic” childhood events and leaving home at a young age, Mr de Vietri said. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen fined Sutherland $1700 and declared his remand period as time served. “The slate is clean for you,” Mr Vandersteen told Sutherland. “I feel for your dad (watching in court). It’s frustrating (to look) at your age that you’re not getting it together.”

The 41-year-old clinical psychologist grew up in Endeavour Hills and went to school across the tracks at the long demolished Doveton High School. He is also responsible for setting up four bulk-billing mental health facilities in Narre Warren, Cranbourne, Pakenham and Frankston within the past 24 months which are specifically aimed at children and adults who cannot afford private practice counselling. The facilities, under the banner of South Eastern Counselling and Psychology, were inundated with patients from all throughout Casey and Cardinia and had a waiting list within three months. Two and a half years ago John watched as the ABC broadcast a heartbreaking Four Corners special detailing the severity of youth mental health problems and teenage suicide in the City of Casey. “I felt I had been a little bit cocooned. I was working in Berwick, a fairly affluent area, and so it was an eye-opener for me and it was sort of a slap in the face.” After watching Four Corners, John viewed mental health problems in Casey and Cardinia as being at crisis point. “It was a problem, it’s always been a problem and it always will be a problem but I didn’t yet see it as a crisis,” he said. “It wasn’t until the numbers escalated and I’ve gone ‘wait a minute, the schools in Berwick are now being affected by this’. “I said OK, this is in our lap right now, what the hell are we doing?” The South Eastern Counselling and Psychology service now has a team of 26 staff working across its four facilities. Swell day for pool pirates LOCAL children sailed the seas over the school holidays when they got the chance to become captain of their own ship. Cranbourne Park attracted more than its normal crowd last month when it held a free school holiday activity with an inflatable pool and colourful bumper boats. Families were entertained with plenty of other action including jumping castle rides, arts and crafts classes, karaoke, face painting, balloons and lucky dips. Hungry Jacks and Reddy Roasts also offered free coffees and mini muffins for the parents. Cranbourne Park centre manager Kate Parkinson said the bumper boats were a hit with kids and provided huge amounts of fun.

TWO men have made a quick escape from police after authorities were called to Langmore Lane in Berwick over reports they were loitering. Around 12.30am on Sunday 1 February police responded to a call that two men were suspected to be stealing from cars in the area. The two males were disturbed by police and fled in a stolen car they had used in a petrol run at a United petrol station along Camms Road, Cranbourne, earlier that night. The men managed to escape with two wheels they had taken from a vehicle that night. Anyone with more information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
By BRIDGET SCOTT CRANBOURNE Rotarians are helping build a better future for one of the area’s most vital food sources. Construction of a garage is underway for the Cranbourne Food Truck and once completed, the truck will be kept on the same site as its donations. Truck co-ordinator Chris Marsh said the garage would make a huge difference, given that the truck had been parked on a private residence for the past three years. “Thanks to the generosity of Rotary, we can garage the truck on-site at the church,” she said. “We wanted it on-site, so we can have it next door to where all the donated goods are kept.” The Cranbourne Food Truck has entered its fourth year and services between 20-50 people each time it goes out during the week. Rotary members funded and laid the concrete slab at the Uniting Church for the new garage, and the building got underway not long after. Ms Marsh said it would be “more convenient for everybody” when the truck could be stored at its new location. Ian Symons from the Cranbourne Rotary Club said the contributions from his club were both physical and financial. The truck was previously parked

A RENTAL property along Plaistow Court, Cranbourne North, was completely engulfed in flames last week. On Saturday 31 January, the CFA was called to a blaze around 5pm. Emergency crews extinguished the fire, and the CFA crime investigation unit as well as an arson chemist were called. The house is now under investigation by police who are unsure if there were any occupants inside the house at the time it was set alight. THE Casey Choir is calling for potential new members to put their hand up to be part of the group for 2015. The all-female choir has grown from a membership base of 15 to 50 in just a few years and is once again opening its doors. Choir member Marlene Lawrence encouraged new members to join up, indicating the notable benefits of being part of such a group. “Group singing is cheaper than therapy, healthier than drinking, and certainly more fun than working out,” she said. “It is the one thing in life where feeling better is pretty much guaranteed.” Ms Lawrence also spoke of the opportunities provided through the choir, including the chance to travel across Australia and the globe. “Quite a few members are travelling overseas to sing in Europe during 2015,” she said. “Other members of the choir will travel to Sydney to sing in a Mass choir at the Sydney Opera House.” The Casey Choir, based in Berwick and led by Simon Loveless, enjoyed a memorable 2014, with several performances at the City of Casey Citizenship ceremonies and a performance at the inaugural Berwick Carols by Candlelight rounding out the year. Simply the best By JARROD POTTER ONE of the best 35 young footballers in the country. It’s quite the glowing recommendation three Dandenong Stingrays’ TAC Cup footballers have received after earning their tickets to the United States last month as part of the NAB AFL Academy Level Two Squad. Put through their paces in a highintensity training program at the elite sports facility - The IMG Academy, in Bradenton, Florida - Gach Nyuon, Kieran Collins and Jacob Weitering were drilled, tested and evaluated under the watchful eyes of Academy coaches and AFL club recruiters alike. With 14 club interviews at the 10-day camp and benefitting from the hard slog of the training program, Nyuon, 17, from Springvale South, feels pretty fortunate to have been given the chance to take his football to the next level before the start of the season. “I reckon I was pretty lucky - the advantage we have over the other players that aren’t in the academy, the facilities we use and the coaches we get, we’re very lucky and I’m just trying to take in and learn as much as I can,” Nyuon said. “They pretty much taught us to push a lot harder - you can take more than you think your body can take if you actually push yourself that little bit extra. “All the hard work pretty much,
with a little support from the boys you can achieve a lot.” The program carries on from the now defunct AIS-AFL Academy and while the players didn’t participate in an exhibition match this time around, the benefits of the camp were enormous for the trio who are set to star in this year’s upcoming TAC Cup. A knee injury kept Nyuon - a 200-cm ruck/forward prospect from playing most of last year, but with a full pre-season under his belt, coupled with his Academy training program, Nyuon hopes to excel and make a big impact whether in a Stingrays or Vic Country jumper. “Didn’t play much footy last season, had a few injuries, so I just want to play a full season with the TAC Cup and hopefully play some games at the nationals too,” Nyuon said. “Everything is fine and pre-season is going well and running pretty smooth - we’ve got some practice matches for Stingrays coming up in a couple of weeks.” Affiliated with Narre Warren Football Club in the newly formed South East Football Netball League, Nyuon’s local ambitions this season are to get back to Fox Road if he can find a free weekend in an extremely hectic football schedule. The Dandenong Stingrays commence their 2015 TAC Cup season on Saturday 28 March against the Gippsland Power.
RAIN, wind and a low tally all threatened to derail the DDCA’s Under-21 team, but the association’s young cricketers persevered to etch back-toback victories onto the VMCU Neil Wright Shield. The DDCA stormed past Diamond Valley Cricket Association on Sunday to hold aloft the shield for the ninth time in the last 30 seasons as they dismissed Diamond Valley in the second innings to take the narrow 20-run triumph. After rain delayed the start of the match at Jubilee Park, Ringwood, the DDCA lost the toss and were sent in to bat on a less than favourable wicket... at least for the batsmen. Reminiscent of the sticky wickets of the uncovered era, the DDCA toiled to stay at the crease as Diamond Valley struck quickly and often. Wickets fell as did the rain and the DDCA slumped to 7/64. The gallant defensive knocks of captain Dylan Quirk (17 off 44 balls) and Clay McCartney (14 off 22 balls) came unstuck. Not much seemingly separated the DDCA from complete oblivion, but the tail wagged in the best way possible to push the total along. Hallam Kalora Park’s Jordan Hammond (33) excelled as he got his eye in before bludgeoning five boundaries in quick succession to get the DDCA into triple figures but not without a tentative start first up. “I was quite nervous to be honest when Dyl (Dylan Quirk) went out,” Hammond said. “Not hitting them too well at the present time. “I wasn’t too confident heading out there, but early it was pretty hard and the wicket was doing a bit. “After a while got in a bit… probably the first time this year I’ve hit the ball out of the middle.” Hammond would be the last to fall - after skying one last attempted slog with the DDCA finishing on 108 - but his efforts would prove critical later in the day. Like a mirror image, Diamond Valley copied the rapid loss of wickets of the DDCA - slumping themselves to 5/50 before start-stop partnerships threatened to take the match and take the Shield off the Dandenong boys. The tall paceman knew the DDCA bowling attack could defend the tally as every other team had struggled to get them off the square. “I think the highest score any other team had made against us was 120 and
that was the semi-final and every other team we bowled out under 100, so we were pretty confident. “I just wanted to hit the wicket - I was nervous again then as well - I didn’t think I was going to bowl again as the other guys were doing pretty well, but Dyl decided to put me and Liam back on and help me take the last wicket.” The DDCA wanted to thank coach Peter Lindsay, team manager Neil Shaw and scorer Steve Richards for their efforts with the junior team.

If that’s the case then the Cranbourne Football Club is the place to be this winter with the Eagles looking for players, 35 years and over, to play in their Superules side this season. Coach Justin Hamilton said playing Superules was a great way to have fun, get fit and meet great people. “Our club is a big promoter of men’s health, and this a great way of getting off
the couch and gaining a bit of fitness,” Hamilton said. “We have blokes who come along and just train, and then we have other blokes who have just ticked over 35 and run around like mad-men. There’s no pressure on anyone, it’s all about being involved in a club environment, meeting great people, and getting out of it what you want to put in.” The Eagles, who are looking for players of all shapes, sizes and abilities, play in Division 1 of the AFL Vic Metro Superules competition, but cater for all

Back under the flag again By JARROD POTTER DDCA Turf 1 - round 9 (day one) T'WAS a mixed homecoming for Steve Spoljaric as he led Cranbourne away from perilous danger and towards victory in a matter of overs. PARKFIELD v CRANBOURNE RETURNING back to the club he captained to a flag less than 12 months ago, Cranbourne (99 and 0/42) skipper Steve Spoljaric made the trek back to Dunblane Reserve to take on his beloved Parkfield (47). Dunblane Reserve proved the backdrop for a wicket-taking onslaught as neither side could stick at the crease. Jordan Cleland (33) gutsily held on as the scalps fell around him before he finally succumbed as Nilochana Perera (5/28) and Shane Bell (3/34) did the heavy lifting. There wasn’t much to smile about for Cranbourne by the end of its 40-over knock, failing to crack the ton and looking down the barrel of another defeat. Luckily for the Eagles, the script still had more surprises to reveal. Spoljaric (6/26) and Cam Kelly (4/18) would bowl unchanged to run absolute riot with the ball against Parkfield - dismissing the home side for spare change. Matt Aslett (20) was the best of a woeful batting card as it only took 27 overs for Spoljaric and Kelly to dissect the Bears. From battling to stay afloat to 52 runs ahead on the first innings, Cranbourne’s second go fared a lot better as Cleland (22no) and Brayden Roscoe (14no) stuck at it to set up an interesting second day on Saturday. HALLAM KALORA PARK v COOMOORA COOMOORA continued letting sides off the hook as Hallam Kalora Park (6/265) wriggled from the net after the Booths put the boot in. The Kangaroos hopped through the Hawks’ top order as Saliya Saman (1/21) and Joseph Hawke (1/57) kept the early going difficult for the home side. It would take Cory Booth (125) and Ben Hilliard (32) to begin the turnaround - as the duo notched 59 for the fourth wicket before Hilliard holed out. Since last representing the state back in January 2013 where Pattinson, 24, originally from Doveton, took 2/36 and made 33 with the blade in the narrow one-wicket loss to South Australia - he has represented Australia in the Ashes, and headed over to India where he underwent significant rehabilitation to fix a litany of injuries. In the last two years since the Doveton powerhouse represented the Bushrangers, he has had to completely overhaul his bowling action to negate the worst of its back-jarring injury potential. The two Booths notched a 151-run partnership - the second 150-or-more stand for the Hawks in consecutive rounds and demoralised the Kangaroos run by run. The duo would come unstuck chasing the last morsels to add to the tally but walked off to thunderous applause after the complete rescue. HEINZ SOUTHERN DISTRICTS v BERWICK A middle-order revival kept Berwick (156) alive against a resurgent Heinz Southern Districts (2/54). The Bears hibernated early as the visitors slumped to 5/32 on the back of a scintillating spell from Chad Van Estrop (4/26). Van Estrop decided to see off the first four Berwick batsmen for a pittance as Brad James (3), Jarrod Goodes (4), Ryan Williamson (6) and Bathiya Perera
(3) barely struggled the scorers. The hard work was left to the Brit Dan Brown (76) who batted manfully against the Cobras to keep Berwick hopes alive. Brown combined with Ryan Crawford (30) for a dignitysaving 75-run stand to push the Bears out of complete disarray towards a slender total. Crawford’s demise started the next collapse as Michael Davies (2/18), Matt Downe (2/37) and Paul Stockdale (2/70) started the march towards the end of the Berwick batting order. Cheshire’s Brown only succumbed as he upped the tempo - striking sixes and boundaries at will - but he ran out of team mates and had to keep the runs flowing before getting skittled by Downe after a sensational half-century - his first of his inaugural DDCA Turf 1 season. squad along with three other DDCA players - all bowling options - for him to dish out the overs in the representative side this weekend. It’s been a long, but steady process - with Pattinson making a cautious return as a batsman only in Victorian Premier Cricket, with his affiliated club Dandenong. Pattinson was only unleashed to bowl his first four overs in match conditions against the Monash Tigers prior to Christmas and the start of the Big Bash season. He’s in full flight now - having bowled 22 overs for Dandenong against Casey-South Melbourne in last round’s threewicket win over the Swans. Pattinson’s Dandenong counterpart Peter Siddle has also been recalled to the Bushrangers squad, following Test match and Big Bash duties with
the Melbourne Renegades. It’s been 27 months passing since the pace duo played together in Victorian colours. Chris Rogers is the other inclusion from the Victorian squad that defeated Western Australia in their last match in early December. Pattinson is the cherry on top for the Bushrangers, who were already flying along this season as they top the Sheffield Shield table with 28.21 points, prior to their clash against Queensland at the Gabba from 11am on Saturday. Belgrave South’s Glenn Maxwell is unavailable for Bushrangers’ selection as he’s part of the Cricket World Cup squad.

Tigers on the attack By DAVID NAGEL BEACONSFIELD’S (158) final forgettable season in the West Gippsland Cricket Association has taken a turn for the better after the Tigers staged a remarkable late-rally against Pakenham (4/6). Bound for the Dandenong District Cricket Association (DDCA) next season, the winless Tigers have struggled after a mass-exodus of players left the club a little shy on top-end talent. “It’s a funny thing, because despite the upheaval at the start of the season the mood’s been good and we’ve pushed some really good sides into precarious positions,” Tigers’ skipper Don Kerslake said. “Hopefully this time we can get the job done.” Well the Tigers are well on the way after a spirited seven-overs of bowling that had their opponents reeling as stumps were drawn at Toomuc Reserve on Saturday. Shameera Weerasinghe (2/1 off 4) and Callan Tout (2/5 off 3) turned the synthetic pitch at Toomuc into a duckpond, with Nic Close (0), Matt Welsh (0) and James Vela (0) all making a splash. The Lions still have skipper Jason Williams and gun all-rounder Russ Lehman tucked away in the sheds so the Tigers still have some work to do. Earlier in the day it was left to Weerasinghe (36) to repel a brilliant bowling performance from Lehman (6/69 off 27.3) who reverse-swung his
way to his best figures of the season. A late-rally from veteran Richard Gault (29) and Sam McDavitt (21) who put on 42 for the eighth wicket - gave the Tigers’ attack something to bowl at. Upper Beaconsfield (98) was another to recover from a slow start, the Maroons back in the hunt after their bowlers clicked against Merinda Park (8/74). The Maroons were awful with the willow; skipper Chris Savage (27) the only player past 20 as Jess Mathers (3/27) and Co. put the Cobras into a winning position. The Maroons then needed something special to keep their flickering finals hopes alive, and it came from its shooting-star Chad McDonald. The youngster claimed three quick wickets, before leg-spinner Scott Pitcher snared three late, to leave this one as a real contest heading into day two. It was tough and tight at Gunton Oval on Saturday where the top-two sides, Cardinia and Kooweerup (218), locked into a high-quality 80-over contest. There were ebbs and flows all day, the Demons good early with Chris O’Hara (33) and Chris Bright (38) in control, before Neil Barfuss (4/43) led a Bulls’ charge through the middle stages. Matt Davey (36) and Dananja Madushanka (35) gave the visitors the slight edge by the close of play. Single Panther makes a sterling stand By JARROD POTTER VICTORIAN PREMIER CRICKET Premier 1st Round 15 (day 2) BLASTING past a whopping target, Dandenong (7/316) claimed its most emphatic win of the season after chasing down Casey-South Melbourne (313). It was a horror start for the visitors as Dan Watson (3/79) and Simon Black (1/44) extracted swing, bounce and, most importantly, the entire Dandenong top order early on Saturday. When David Alleyne (15 retired hurt) had to leave the game with a severely injured calf, the Panthers’ initiative had been completely derailed... except for one man. James Nanopoulos (140) stood tall when his team mates needed to rally around someone. The Panthers’ all-rounder - never before venturing over 72 in the 1st Grade - took it on his shoulders to guide his side home. With another Dandenong all-rounder - James Pattinson (64) in tow, the duo added a century-stand to torment Casey captain Chris Hall (0/67) and his Swans. Pattinson would finally give back his wicket - as Lachie Sperling (3/68) spun his first wicket of the afternoon - and gave Casey-South Melbourne its last sniff of victory. Peter Siddle (14) and Peter Sweeney (7) would come and go leaving only Nanopoulos and the tail to get the remaining runs as the wind howled across Casey Fields. Nanopoulos stayed the course and secured his maiden Premier century as he batted out another strong stand with debutant bowler Adam McMaster (29 not out). Dandenong captain Dan Doran didn’t bat on Saturday as he left it up to his younger quicks to bat out the final overs and secure the victory.
Eagles over the hills VSDCA South East - 1st XI Round 10 (day two) THE young Eagles soared highest but Endeavour Hills (240) also found itself just short of a sizeable target against Malvern (8/256). Zach Allen (48) - fresh off his Victorian Under-19s duties - started the innings emphatically as he struck towards another half-ton. He would be brought undone, after a 78-run opening stand with Thomas Hafil (27), as his pegs were sent flying. Ben Swift (54) was the next young Eagle to get his eye in and bludgeoned his third half-century in the season to keep the score ticking along with Justin Merlino (27) through the middle order. Merlino’s defiance would come to an end as he lost his bails to Brett Chard (1/34) at 5/131 - leaving the effort to Swift as he found some support from the lower order before he was trapped in front after making his 50. The overs would creep up on Endeavour Hills and with wickets falling consistently, it spelled disaster. The last ditch efforts of Richard Saniga (26) and Vaughan Baxter (25) weren’t enough as the Eagles fell 16 short. Endeavour Hills is seventh and heads to wooden-spoon contenders Moorabbin this round. That winning feeling, despite losses CRANBOURNE BOWLS DESPITE losing to Kingsbury by seven shots, Cranbourne picked up four valuable points on Saturday by winning on two rinks to hold on to eighth spot on the Division 1 metro bowls ladder. With only three rounds remaining for the season every point is crucial. Next week Cranbourne plays Heathmont at home. Division 2 enjoyed a 21-shot victory against old time rivals Berwick at home. Division 3 defeated Dandy club by 25 shots. Division 4 was 40 shots up against Murrumbeena. And Division 7 won again by 16 shots against Coatesville. Division 1 SKIP Mark Bland tried to make up the difference in shots on the last end of the day but it was not to be and Cranbourne eventually went down by seven shots in a close game at Kingsbury.

Narre Warren Football Club is joining the AFL Masters Superules ranks and hopes to find 25 to 30 keen ‘young’ (at heart) Magpies to get out to Fox Road and don the black and white stripes. Former Narre Warren player Kahl Heinze will coach the ragtag bunch of football relics - aged 35 and over - and said the interest in resuming storied local-football careers was strong after years of “yeah we should do it” conversations at Kalora Park. “We’ve been talking about it through the old boys - once all super champions who gave it away - we’ve been talking about it for years,” Heinz said. “So here we are now and we have a team running… we’re hoping we can get the numbers, get them out on the track and running ahead of the season.” The team that includes the likes of Darren Dwyer, current team manager Brad ‘Joffa’ Alexander, Phil Cipriani and Heinze is also spreading the rumour if the club can find a jumper big enough they’re keen to enlist current senior coach Kris Toner. The Masters Magpies will take to the fields in the AFL Masters Division-2 competition, with hopes of knocking off reigning premier Dingley, but the real hope for the side is to establish a great social and family environment. “It will be (at it) every other Sunday that accounts for old f#!t injuries - it’s more of a social league if you like, with family commitments from game to game, week to week,” Heinze said. “Irrespective of the club you came from, we’re hoping people can come along and enjoy a game here as it’s more about the social and family aspect of footy rather than the competitive ‘let’s have a crack at the flag’ environment. “Have a kick and hopefully win a few games, but it’s more about enjoying the fellowship and having a bit of fun.” Everyone and anyone of all fitness levels and former affiliations are encouraged to come along to a training session - every Wednesday night from 6pm at Kalora Park.
