Deborah Bentley, Harry’s daughter, said the family was deeply saddened by his passing, but they would ensure his legacy lived on through his family. “We are proud of dad and he will be missed,“ she said. “The legacy of his participation in WWII will be passed down through his family.”

Photos have also surfaced of Harry meeting with then Australian Prime Minister John Curtin who visited 467 Squadron in the UK. The photo shows Harry and his squadron colleagues talking candidly with Prime Minister Curtin just prior to a bombing raid on the marshalling yards at Tours. Between January 1942 and April 1945, 467 Squadron flew a total of 3833 missions and dropped 17,578 tons of bombs, all with the

motto “fall on enemies ferociously”. The squadron suffered heavy losses in the course of its operations and 760 personnel were killed, of whom 284 were Australian. Some 118 aircraft were lost. Originally from Melbourne and spending many of his final years in Coolum, Harry was an active charter member of the RAAF Association of Tewantin Noosa and is survived by his children and grandchildren.

A WORLD War II veteran and one of Australia’s dwindling number of Bomber Command gunners passed away on Christmas Eve aged 91. Harry James Cole Bentley, DFC, was one of only three remaining members of 467 Squadron who had received a Distinguished Flying Cross after the war ended in 1945. A Coolum Beach resident, Harry lived life in the fast lane as a youngster and according to RAAF Association of Tewantin Noosa president Patrick Clifford, being a gunner was not his first choice. Mr Clifford spoke highly of Harry and he will give the opening address and eulogy during Harry’s memorial service on Saturday, 10 January. “Harry chose the RAAF hoping to become a pilot,” Mr Clifford said. “But unfortunately, during his final flight test and after completing all his requirements, he forgot to put his seatbelt on before take-off. “He was instructed to land the plane and was never given another chance to fly.” Instead Harry served as a midupper gunner, which was considered one of the most dangerous roles during the war. Harry undertook more than 40 bombing raids as part of 467 Squadron in Lancaster bombers under the Royal Australian Air Force. He helped pave the way for the D-Day landings and flew hair-raising bombing raids over Nazi Germany at altitudes as low as 400 feet. Harry played a role in one of the biggest seaborne invasions in history, beginning with the invasion of German-occupied western Europe, which led to the liberation of France from Nazi control and contributed to an Allied victory in the war. Richardson & Wrench Noosa (R&W Noosa) property manager Wendy Cousins said she had already paid the end-of-month income for December to home owners, who commonly received between $38,000 to over $40,000 for the high end apartments on Hastings Street and homes in Sunshine Beach and Noosa Sound. “Holiday home owners can expect to see even more incredible cheques in January,” she said. Ms Cousins said the 2014 summer season had been one of the busiest yet, with holiday homes booked out over the G20 weekend and only very limited availability for the holiday season. R&W Noosa principal Peter Butt said many homes left vacant for long periods during the year had the potential to earn their owners an impressive income. “Most people will use their holiday home two to three times a year,“ he explained. “It may take a week to put the property back in good order. By the time they get to sit down and relax, it’s almost time to leave.” Mr Butt said there was also a real concern for people who owned properties with high land content value. “Some pay up to and over $10,000 per annum in land tax for their prime

positions and that is before rates, water charges and normal maintenance. So getting an income from the property makes sense.” Property management companies such as R&W Noosa can take the hassle out of maintaining a holiday home by doing all the hard work while the owners are away, while leasing out the home to holiday makers throughout the year. Ms Cousins said there was a variety of properties available for rent throughout the Noosa region. “We have the largest portfolio of luxury homes in Noosa, but we can cater for anyone,” she said. “The holiday homes we offer range from a studio apartment in Hastings Street to a seven-bedroom home and the rates can range from $25,000 per week to $750 per week.” Ms Cousins said the most popular holiday homes were at Noosa Sound, or any on the waterfront. “Even if I was to get another dozen homes in Noosa Sound, it wouldn’t be enough,” she said. Tourists flock to Noosa in record numbers By JONATHON HOWARD NOOSA tourism and accommodation operators received a record number of bookings through December and several operators have reported their best December on record. Both national and international visitor numbers have surged, with Noosa considered one of Australia’s “must see“ destinations. The results were revealed in the annual Visitor Survey, which showed the coast recorded the highest growth figure of any region in Queensland at 9.4 per cent growth and a total of 245,000 international visitors. This is set to continue with forward bookings for the holidays looking “fantastic“, according to Sunshine Coast Destination Ltd CEO Simon Ambrose. “Many operators are full but there are still places to be found for people looking around for vacancies,“ he said.

“Looking forward, the hinterland gets pretty quiet later in January, so people looking to have a bit of a break can enjoy the slightly cooler climate up there and still be pretty close to the coast.“ Mr Ambrose said the buoyant tourism sector this year had boosted the region’s popularity with visitors. “Bookings in current years are the best they’ve had in 10 to 12 years and that has certainly been played out by many different operators,“ he said. A Tourism Noosa spokeswoman said the summer looked strong. “Our Visitor Information Centre and many tourism operators report that bookings are looking healthy, with most properties around Hastings Street and Noosaville heavily booked right through to the Australia Day long weekend,“ she said.

Fuel set to rise NOOSA motorists are being urged to fill up prior to the weekend, as petrol pump prices are set to skyrocket. Noosa motorists are currently enjoying the cheapest fuel in more than five years after prices of fuel fell as low as 119.4 cents a litre for standard unleaded. Several fuel stations also dropped as low as 111.9 cents per litre. However, motoring group RACQ has warned price hikes are fast approaching and prices could jump 15 cents a litre before the weekend. Based on a 60-litre fuel tank in the average vehicle, this would equate to an extra $9 at the petrol bowser. RACQ spokesperson Renee Smith said motorists should top up while the prices are low. “Our current price cycle has shifted in behaviour, which has made it hard to predict exactly when a price rise could occur,” she said. “Prices have been so low for so long, we can expect a price increase sometime soon.’’

Fast and furious election By JONATHON HOWARD MEMBER for Noosa Glen Elmes says the State Election, announced for 31 January, will be a clear battle between the LNP and ALP as Noosa candidates rally the troops for a fast and furious campaign battle this month. State Premier Campbell Newman made the surprise election announcement on Tuesday, 6 January. The historically early election announcement was believed to have been called to catch Labor candidates off guard, but to also put to rest ongoing election speculation which Mr Newman said was “putting Queensland’s economy at risk”. Mr Elmes has backed the election announcement and said he had already locked in his campaign team and strategy. “We’re ready to go and look forward to welcoming residents across the Noosa electorate to the polls this month,” he said. Mr Elmes has disregarded minor parties in the electorate and says the battle will be between the two major parties. “The reality is that the next government of Queensland will be either LNP, which has well and truly delivered for Noosa and Queensland, or ALP which is recycling members from failed administrations of the past which left the state with $80 billion of debt,” he said. “I’m pleased to put myself forward for re-election as the Member for Noosa, and to stand on my strong record of achieving for the Noosa electorate over nine years.” Mr Elmes said the people of Noosa

were better off today than they would have been otherwise and he listed a range of achievements including the return of the local Noosa Council, the development of The Queensland Plan and investments in local education, health and roads. Meanwhile, ALP candidate for Noosa Mark Denham said he welcomed the election announcement. “I have been serving the community of Noosa tirelessly for over 25 years as an ambulance paramedic, and I will serve the community with the same passion and dedication in State Parliament – to do this, I need everyone’s support,” he said. “Noosa has not moved forward with Campbell Newman – our TAFE has closed, the promised Eumundi Road upgrade is nowhere to be seen, improvement and expansion of Noosa Hospital has been denied many times,

hospital services that were in place with Labor were stopped abruptly when Newman came into power. Labor will fight for their community and we will stand up in the State Parliament and make sure Noosa is not being left behind.” Greens candidate for Noosa Joe Shlegeris has disregarded Mr Elmes’ comments and revealed his four main election commitments. They included offering an independent representative for the seat of Noosa, to keep and enhance the Noosa Hospital, to stop the sale of electricity assets and to work for sound economic and environmental policies which will “enable small business to flourish and create jobs here in the electorate“. “We will lose our hospital if we don’t make a huge effort to save it,” Mr Shlegeris said.

“The LNP blew the budget on a new hospital far away and doesn’t have enough left for operating costs. The LNP will shut our hospital. Labor will just let it die. I’m the only candidate who can and will fight to keep it.” Meanwhile, the Palmer United Party has confirmed it will be standing a candidate for the state seat of Noosa. However, the candidate was unavailable for comment this week and was expected to make an announcement next week. Premier Newman said the electoral rolls would close on Saturday, 10 January, and he urged all Queenslanders to ensure their enrolment was up to date. Cheap fuel prices have helped make the holiday season extra special, but will they last to the weekend?

NOOSA Council officers will be on the lookout for motorists placing beachgoers in danger on the Noosa North Shore this year. Motorists driving down the restricted first and third access points to Noosa North Shore could face hefty fines following several near misses. The warning follows a spike in complaints about drivers ignoring exclusion zone signage and driving their vehicles through restricted areas. Council said in a press statement that the area of the beach between the first three access points was often packed with people and many were at risk of being run over. The issue escalated recently after a beach user was assaulted by a driver who

was travelling through the restricted area without approval. Noosa Council disaster management and public order manager Ron Thomas said the exclusion zone had been in place for several years and drivers who ignored the signs placed other beach users at risk. “The area between the first and third beach access points has been a restricted area for many years, there is signage advising this, and there is no excuse for drivers who break the rules,“ Mr Thomas said. He said council officers would patrol the beach as well as follow up on complaints from beachgoers. Mr Thomas said anyone who witnessed a vehicle breaking the rules, should make note of the registration number and report it to Noosa Council by phoning (07) 5329 6500.

Armchair? That’s not fair IT’S nice to be back and I hope everything goes according to plan for 2015. I don’t know about you, but I had a terrific Christmas. My daily routine was walking to Hell’s Gates, having a swim and a coffee before discussing the world and local affairs on officially Australia’s number one beach with Hey Bill. I must say I was disappointed by the personal attack from a couple of blokes who took exception to my take on the EDV/Alliance squabble. One bloke reckons I am ‘’lauding the principle of apartheid among Hinterland people’’. This gentleman goes on to say that “I ignored the professional survey done that apparently supports the EDV joining Noosa’’.

I take offence to that, as I have been involved in sports that have a strong association to indigenous athletes. Throughout my boxing career I have always been in teams with and fought against fighters who were Aboriginals, Islanders, Cubans and Americans. I can assure you the race card was never played and, in fact, my team-

mate for the 1980 Olympics was Norm Stevens, an Aboriginal from Innisfail in North Queensland. The survey you mentioned has been questioned on numerous occasions, with most people waiting for its accurate findings to be released. You are right in saying that a democratic boundary review process is required to establish the position accurately and, if needed, to realign the boundary. I agree and the sooner it’s put to the vote the better, but it must be the entire Sunshine Coast’s decision, not just a selected few. The other writer really got me offside, saying that I was an armchair critic suggesting I know everything and asked whether I was just grumpy

because I was not in the limelight anymore. This genius goes on to say “that I wouldn’t read the book Noosa and Cooloola because it would challenge my entrenched prejudices”. First of all mate, the book is pictorial so I am sure even you will be able to follow the timeline portrayed. This bloke must be a blow-in, calling me an armchair anything. Sir, I have never sat back and have always been at the forefront of any issue I believe in, especially sport related. I have for over 30 years gone in to bat on many issues and I don’t remember you at the first ever Noosa Triathlon, Jack Newton Pro-Am or helping fundraise for surf clubs,

schools, the RSPCA, Red Cross and so many other charities. I have been on sporting, tourism and council boards over the years as well. Armchair? No-way - and if you were a local you would know that. On to better things to talk about, the Coast Sport Star of the Year Awards are on Friday 30 January. Of the 26 athletes covering 15 Sports , seven are from Noosa - softballers Jocelyn McCallum and Luke Thomas, lifesaver Jordan Mercer, cyclist Shara Gillow, swimmers Brittany Elmslie and Remy Fairweather and Hastings Street’s fastest runner Jordan Csabi. INBRIEF Assault A 23-YEAR-OLD Tanawha man has been charged with assault after allegedly throwing a glass at a man in Peregian Beach on New Year’s Eve. Police will allege that at about 10.30pm on 31 December at a venue on David Low Way, the Tanawha man threw a glass at a 43-year-old Peregian Beach man. The victim man was left bruised and with cuts to his face while a 36-year-old Peregian Springs man also received cuts to his arm and elbow after the glass shattered. The Tanawha man has been charged with two counts of assault occasioning bodily harm and is due to appear in the Maroochydore Magistrates’ Court on 30 January.

Nudity in the dunes AN ELDERLY man has pleaded guilty in Noosa Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday for exposing his genitals at a local beach. Police Prosecutor Sergeant Melissa Campbell told the court the man was seen by police in the sand dunes near Claude Batten Drive, Noosa Heads. The man had moved from NSW to Noosa 18 months ago and said he wasn’t aware it was an offence to bath nude in Queensland. The man was placed on a good behaviour bond for three months and no conviction was recorded.

Quiet NYE LOCAL police have reported the 2014 New Year’s Eve as one of the most quiet and wellbehaved in years. Senior Sergeant Steve McReight said there were only a handful of arrests for public nuisance in Noosa with most call-outs to loud house parties in outer suburbs. The Queensland Police Service report-

ed a quiet New Year’s Eve state-wide with crowd numbers affected by storm activity, rain and hot weather. A total of 82 arrests were reported for the Sunshine Coast region, including Noosa Shire, with 85 charges laid as a result.

Traffic blitz LOCAL police have teamed up with the state traffic branch for a blitz on local roads, with surprising results. Snr Sgt McReight said of the 336 random breath tests carried out last Saturday, only one person was charged with drink driving. The result is a stark contrast to the numerous drink drivers clogging the local courts throughout 2014. New number plate technology meant a staggering 44 tickets were issued for unregistered, unlicensed and uninsured drivers. Snr Sgt McReight said it was a timely reminder for drivers to keep on top of their registration, with registration stickers no longer needing to be displayed.

Beach watch PLAINCLOTHES and uniformed officers are taking to the streets to make sure people lock it and don’t lose it. Sen Sgt McReight said it was not only an offence to leave a vehicle unlocked, but also a great opportunity for a thief to steal belongings. “We found eight cars unlocked last Saturday,” he said. Officers will patrol Claude Batten Drive and Hastings Street in Noosa Heads throughout the holiday season in a bid to prevent theft. Snr Sgt McReight said several tickets were also issued for vehicles parked in wheelchair access parking spaces and is urging drivers to be aware of marked spaces.

National honour By RON LANE LOCAL surf club member Anthony J LaMarseny has just received one of Surf Life Saving’s highest awards, the National Medal. This is the result of an extraordinary 25 years of outstanding service to Helicopter Rescue in Sydney. This medal is awarded by the governing body of Life Saving Australia, the National Council, for Emergency Services in Surf Life Saving. Tony, who is 56, currently holds dual membership, one with Noosa and the other with Coogee in Sydney. It was with Coogee that his career started in 1963. At only five, he became one of the original Nippers at the Coogee club. For Tony, it was the start of what has become a family affair. His father John was already a member of Coogee. “I got my bronze when I turned 15 and I got a real buzz out of being in the club with the old man. He is now something of a legend; won medals at national level in surf boats and skis, was captain of the Australian team and is now a life member.” After shifting to the Sunshine Coast with his

family, Tony, along with his son Lachie, joined Noosa 12 years ago. Despite having built his home at Peregian, he still flies to Sydney every two weeks to fulfill his helicopter roster. Apart from his Sydney duties he has also served a year as a member of Care Flight, which is based in Darwin. “Because I now live interstate I am on a sort of floating patrol and it works well.” During his time in Coogee, Tony served as junior then senior club captain and in competition won medals state level and was a also a member of the NSW surf team. “In surf club life the family environment is very important and for our young members there is always mentors there to help if needed,” he said. “It is probably one of the few organisations that have members from 15 to 70.” Despite his long service standing Tony has also served as a patrolman on Noosa Beach and also proudly represented Noosa at many carnival. The National Medal is indeed a well-deserved honor.

Rainbow rescue RACQ CareFlight’s Sunshine Coast rescue helicopter was tasked to Rainbow Beach on Wednesday, 31 December, at 2:30pm for man who had been dumped by a large wave and landed heavily, causing him pain in his back. QAS treated the patient from Hervey Bay for a possible spinal injury, and then transported him a short distance to a school oval nearby where the rescue crew was waiting. The patient was loaded and airlifted to Nambour Hospital in a stable condition.

Winched from Mount Coolum THE Sunshine Coast RACQ CareFlight rescue helicopter crew successfully conducted a winch rescue at Mount Coolum on Tuesday, 30 December, resulting in a Victorian man in his late sixties being airlifted to Nambour General Hospital. The man, who had suffered a suspected cardiac episode, was winched from the main track near the top of the mountain when it became evident that he was unable to make the descent on his own. He was taken to Nambour General Hospital in a stable condition. It was the second mission of the morning for the Sunshine Coast crew, who had just concluded a patient transfer from Fraser Island when they were tasked to proceed to Mount Coolum shortly before 11am.

Eye on schools NOOSA residents are being asked to keep a close eye on their local schools during the holidays and to report suspicious activity to the School Watch hotline (13 17 88). Education Minister John-Paul Langbroek said that schools were centres of the community and it was vital to protect them from vandalism and theft. He said more than 700 calls were made to the School Watch number last year and so far around 300 calls had been made this year. “These calls have had a significant impact on the needless waste of money and resources that occurs when school property is damaged,” he said. Residents are asked to lodge their concerns with the School Watch Hotline by phoning: 13 17 88. Local koalas are under threat from deteriorating corridors. building fewer houses, while creating more homes. The reality is we have a rapidly increasing demand for smaller single level homes from an ageing and downsizing resident population who wants to remain in the area in which they currently live. I for one would like to accommodate that without the loss of any more critical habitat in such an important koala corridor. 1168003-AM01-15

LOOKING at the koala sightings reported to KoalaTracker.com.au from Tewantin over the past few weeks, a clear corridor becomes evident. One that puts koalas in imminent danger, not just from the busy roads crossed, but from the pockets of trees which provide food and shelter now, that will soon and inevitably be lost to small subdivisions. As have other such havens already become – new housing estates of one or two streets tucked in among the old, in old Tewantin. Lush trees fresh with scratches will give way to bulldozers, to lifeless brick and tile, flat fences barring the current course, and more bitumen criss-crossing the corridor on which our koalas will be killed. As the demand for housing increases, long-held large blocks of land and the magnificent trees upon them will be sacrificed. With loss of habitat the biggest killer of koalas, I find myself contemplating an alternative town plan. Not to stop development, but to encourage smaller footprints, dreaded higher density with fewer houses and more townhouses, and that long-feared upward movement, rather than ever outward sprawl. A town plan bursting with clever design that provides amenity and aesthetics, and encompasses the homes of our wildlife neighbours rather than obliterates them. Perhaps we should hold a contest for our local design students, observers and professionals alike, that challenges us to ‘develop’ the allotments left and showcase what could be done, rather than what always has and surely will be done. And with that, let us have a reasonable debate on lifting the building height, on

Tutors work one-on-one with program participants to help improve their literacy and numeracy skills. Volunteer tutors will undertake a 12-week Volunteer Community Adult Literacy Tutoring Course. The course will commence in February and will be held at Noosaville Library. Tutors will receive a certificate of attainment after completing the course. Council jury’s out on landfill THE first hot topic for the Noosa Council’s new Democracy Foundation is minimising landfill. Council is calling for public submissions around the question: “What is the best option for minimising organic waste sent to landfill?” Submissions will help inform Noosa’s new community jury, which meets to consider the topic for the first time on Saturday, 7 February. Submissions will form the start-

ing point of information considered by the jury. What should they consider as they weigh-up their decision? What should an informed resident on the jury take the time to read and understand? Local community groups and residents with a particular interest in the topic are also invited to attend upcoming stakeholder briefings. Noosa’s community jury is made

up of a cross-section of people from the community. Submissions can be in the form of documents or research that Noosa residents think jury members should read; or examples of approaches from other local governments, or even questions that the jury could ask of other experts. The new Democracy Foundation will not edit or place limits on the information provided to the jury. Submitters can make their case as they see fit.

Ideally, submissions should be in by Friday 30 January to ensure that documents are available to jurors to read prior to their first meeting. However, submissions will continue to be accepted into late February. Submissions made by individuals will have contact phone numbers and identifying address details obscured. The documents will otherwise be made public in their entirety, along with council’s background paper, on Council’s Your Say Noosa website

The Christmas Day three-course meal was prepared by head chef and owner Fabio Nocera and his wife Ruby at their Noosa Junction business. When Santa flew in HUNDREDS of locals and visitors flocked to the 50th Lions Peregian Christmas Carols at Peregian Beach on 22 December. Taking flight AS A long-time resident of Noosa, I congratulate the Sunshine Coast Council for its effort to have the Maroochy Airport brought up to scratch. Long-term planning has been in place to extend the runway and to improve facilities for years, so there is no reason for the naysayers to try to stop it. We need an airport to be functional in all weathers and to be reliable for the travelling public. Maroochy is not presently able to provide that certainty. Flights that have to be diverted to Brisbane in hazardous weather cause inconvenience for passengers who are forced to travel to the Sunshine Coast by bus. When the runway is extended, the need for diversion will be rare. To avoid cyclical downturns in tourism and business, we need to attract more tourists, to develop more business opportunities, and to improve conditions for the travelling public. Sunshine Coast Council is to be commended and needs to be supported by us all for embarking upon such an important and potentially costly exercise that will undoubtedly benefit everyone. A big beneficiary of the airport upgrade will be the Noosa Council, which so far appears unwilling to throw its hat into the ring or to be part of this much-needed facility development. E. Not impartial IT HAS become quite clear now the LNP local government minister Crisafulli does not seem able to exercise his powers with impartiality. First there was his self-imposed pre-condition to the EDV boundary change that “both councils must agree”. If he, as local government minister, could not foresee there was zero chance of the Sunshine Coast Council co-operating to grant the change that a clear majority of residents wanted, then he was not “across his brief”. More importantly, this precondition, capriciously plucked from thin air, is not part of the local government legislation dealing with a boundary change and therefore represents an abuse of his powers as local gov-

ernment minister. Secondly, we now have this minister diddling Noosa Council of a proper accounting following the split from the Sunshine Coast Council. What then is the reason given by him for shutting the door on a process whereby Noosa Council is capriciously, by edict, deprived of a potential entitlement to many millions of dollars? The answer: These monies are forfeited and paid over to SCC as “the council that did not get an opportunity to vote on the de-amalgamation”. What sort of reasoning is this? It’s not any sort of logical reasoning at all. It comes across as a misuse of ministerial power favouring the SCC at the expense of Noosa Council. It’s time the LNP replaced this minister with one that is prepared to exercise his ministerial powers with impartiality and in accordance with the wishes of the majority of residents and ratepayers affected. New paper? HAVING just read yet another tedious proSunshine Coast and anti-Noosa diatribe from Benny Pike, I am wondering what he is doing writing in a publication titled ‘Noosa Today’. Why doesn’t he take his opinions to another newspaper further south? In fact, why does Noosa Today continue to engage Pike? Is it simply to generate controversy and thus irritate letter writers like me? Greg Hamilton, Pomona.

A bad job BENNY (Pike), in reply to your suggestion the words of wisdom from Minister David Crisafulli were correct. May I respectfully remind you, in a letter written to the Sunshine Coast Daily during the de-amalgamation process, you suggested employers south of Noosa should consider not employing people from the Noosa area. At the time I thought “that doesn’t sound like the Benny Pike who represented Australia in the ring and achieved so much, and maybe one day he will be thankful of employment in Noosa”. You are entitled to your opinions as much as anyone else but I hope we are not sitting at the same table if Minister Crisafulli is carving the turkey as I know who will get two drumsticks. E. Why ruin it? FIRSTLY I need to say that I simply cannot grasp what any of this should be necessary. What are these people thinking? But sadly it is. I would like to ask the few who always spoil it for everyone and who are responsible for mountains of regulations and laws a simple question or two: Why do you come here? It is because it’s so beautiful and unspoilt? If so, why on earth would you want to ruin it? It just doesn’t make sense. Do you go home and tell your friends and family about this wonderful spot where you’ve just spent time? And do you then tell them people after you won’t find it so beautiful because of your thoughtlessness and selfishness? The danger wildlife faces because of your dirty habits? Do your kids see you behave that way? The same goes for people using our beautiful beaches. What is that? Get your act together. Look after what you’ve come to enjoy to make sure it stays there for others to enjoy it as well. But, given that it does sadly seem to be necessary, because of a few idiots, then yes, the numbering of campsites, with proof of ID, is the way to go. Perhaps even a good-sized deposit to be refunded if the site is left clean, or send them the bill of cleaning up. M. Gaynor, Noosa.

Bad vote MANY people in Noosa voted Liberal in order they follow through with their election promise to allow Noosa to de-amalgamate from the Sunshine Coast Council. During the process it became very apparent this was not something the Newman Government desired. While SCC Mayor Mark Jamieson waged an expensive and strident campaign to keep the Noosa cash cow tethered to the SCC, the Minister for Local Government, David Crisafulli, did what he could to propagandise against the separation. His letters to residents throughout the shire were a blatant one-sided attempt to frighten us by distorting estimates and greatly magnifying the costs to ratepayers of de-amalgamation. This begs the question, why did the minister

I hope the legal advice the Noosa Council receives recommends court action. In spite of Newman’s meddling with the judiciary in Queensland, we can only hope the courts still have the power to administer justice when it is so clearly needed. I thought this was only happening to me until I was told by others this is quite a regular occurrence and it has happened to them as well. WITH DI HENSHALL HAPPY New Year to you! This is the time when I am supposed to make predictions on trends in the interior design world and I always rise to the challenge. Some of the time I get it right. For instance, a few years ago I was lamenting that there was no navy blue in any fabric house and I was positive navy was THE colour for the following year. It took a couple of years before I was right, but they finally caught on and now it is a great colour used in many applications, including wallpaper and bedding. The thing I love about navy (I should stop carrying on about it) is that it goes with so many other colours, including all the other blues, plus its opposites, like oranges and pinks. So, what happened last year and what is going to happen this year? Last year we saw a few trends coming through, although most trends tend to be circular, or cyclical – there are no real new ideas, just interpretations that get manipulated. One of the big Welcome Back motifs in fashion fabrics and homewares is the fabulous floral. A few years ago, people would cringe if they saw floral anything. Fashion and homewares are so synergistic now, you can almost predict the trends for homewares by checking out what Dolce and Gabbana are up

It is wonderfully versatile and both soothing and energising, depending on the tone and application. Yellow is another colour that is sometimes hard to use, but when used well, looks absolutely

fabulous. Yellow on yellow is a tricky thing to pull off, but a yellow sofa on a yellow rug with pale yellow walls is a total indulgence in colour bravery. Coloured sheer curtaining – another one that floats in and out of favour, will be used more daringly. The harsh glare of sunlight of the Australian climate can be overwhelming on white sheer curtaining, so using a coloured sheer absorbs some of that light and adds a different glow to the whole room. At night, coloured sheers look far more interesting. After years of stainless steel and chrome dominating the metal market, the trend is now swinging towards the warmer softer shades of brass, burnished gold and copper. Adding a copper pendant light into a stainless steel kitchen is sensational. Brass studs around the base of a dining chair can add a real wow. Burnished gold lanterns and perforated lamp shades give

Magic carpet ride for all COME on a magic carpet ride through the sea as the Noosa Arts Theatre presents Aladdin and the Little Mermaid. Directed by Susan Dearnley, two traditional tales have been cleverly blended to create an original fun-filled pantomime performed by more than 25 actors ranging from three years old to 60. The pantomime begins in Shanghai where villain Abanazer is trying to control the world using a genie from a magic lamp that lies in a cave, but global warming means the cave now lies deep under the sea. Aladdin, the best diver in Shanghai, is challenged to retrieve the magic lamp from the underwater cave in return for untold riches, including the love of Princess Ariel, the Little Mermaid. Unfortunately for him, the cave is protected by a magic that only King Neptune’s trident can break through. It’s been a family effort to bring to life the characters with six Sunshine Coast families contributing to this magical pantomime.

The cast includes the talented Crozier trio of Ava, Zak and Roy; sisters Tia and Jazmin Evans; mother and daughter Johanna and Chinta Wallace, and the talented Nash family of Virgo, Bodhi and Mum Tania. Dancing siblings Amiel and Zoe Wing confidently perform in their third Noosa Arts Theatre pantomime, while the multi-talented Frank Wilkie and his equally talented daughter Zigi, enchanting the audience as Abanazer and a sea anemone in their first performance together on stage. The pantomime also features 12 new songs written by Noosa Arts’ Diana Thomson. New Year’s Eve a sell-out FANCY fare was on the menu for locals and visitors, who were determined to enjoy good food and good company despite heavy rains on New Year’s Eve. Many venues throughout Noosa reported a sell-out night, with most New Year’s Eve dinners booked out well in advance at restaurants such as Italian Marina at Noosa Marina, Thomas Corner Eatery in Noosaville and Bistro C on Hastings Street.

Bistro and budget dining options were also a big hit, with the Tewantin Noosa RSL enjoying a busy night. Tewantin Noosa RSL CEO Phil Stephenson said the bistro was busy, with people looking to celebrate with friends and family before taking to the dance floor. “A great night was had by all at the Tewantin Noosa RSL New Year’s Eve celebrations,” he said.

“The club was packed, with Late for Woodstock’s show in the Digger’s Bar booking out a week earlier. Patrons got up on the dance floors in both the Digger’s Bar and the South Bar and the party packs we handed out just before midnight ensured we bought in the New Year with a bang.” Noosa Reef Hotel venue manager Terence Lunney said their bistro was also busy with families and children.

“It was a great dinner service,” he said. “We were very busy, but it was a wonderful evening.” Mr Lunney said many patrons headed downstairs to SODA nightclub after dinner to dance the night away to the sounds of Ministry of Sound’s Mobin Master. “There were glowsticks and LED lights everywhere. A great night had by all,” Mr Lunney said.

Leslie recommends a handful of baby spinach, kale, one carrot, an apple, two teaspoons of chia seeds and/or frozen or fresh fruit such as mango and berries. Adding an avocado or banana can help make the smoothie smoother in consistency. Blend all the ingredients together in a blender and serve.

Breakdown on super foods IT seems just about every newly rediscovered food is labelled a ‘super food’, but what exactly is a ‘super food’ and are they really that super? According to BUPA Health Insurance, there is no scientific definition of a super food, rather it is an informal category for foods that are particularly high in health benefits. While all vegetables are good for the body, some prove the victor when it comes to packing a nutritional punch and not all super foods need to be hard to pronounce or expensive. BUPA recommends adding the following foods to the shopping list: Citrus fruit: while citrus fruits are famous for their vitamin C content, they also provide a healthy serve of vitamin B9, also known as folate, fibre and a range of protective antioxidants. Apples: when compared to the more expensive goji berries and acai fruits, the humble red delicious apple juice proved to have more antioxidants than the expensive alternatives. Avocado: avocados provide B vitamins, vitamin C, potassium, magnesium and fats that are good for the heart. Black beans and red kidney beans: they may not look appealing, but black beans and red kidney beans are a good source of antioxidants, which help protect cells against chronic disease. Salmon: famous for omega-3 fats that help keep arteries healthier, Salmon is also delicious and can be used in an array of recipes. Traditional rolled oats: not just for bears, rolled oats are a great source of fibre and beta-glucan, which can help lower cholesterol. Plus, with a low GI level, rolled oats will help you feel fuller for longer. Walnuts: walnuts pack a punch when it comes to omega-3, but try to add a variety of nuts to the shopping cart. A mix of nuts will deliver a broad range of nutrients such as calcium in almonds and selenium in Brazil nuts.

ENCORE is coming to Noosa this February. The free, eight-week exercise program is designed specifically for women who have experienced breast cancer at any time in their life. The YWCA registered, Australia-wide program has been operating for over 30 years and is delivered by women who have experienced breast cancer. The program targets side effects of surgery and treatment including pain, fatigue and loss of strength through mobility, stretching, aerobic and resistance exercises both on land and in the water. The program also features guest speakers, links to local services and an opportunity to connect with women who have shared similar experiences in a fun, safe and supportive environment. It aims to build self-esteem and assist in relieving stress while restoring a sense of control. Participation is free by enrolment and medical approval is required before commencement. Weekly structured two hour sessions will be delivered over eight weeks and women can enrol by contact-

Bagging out on more mackerel By JACK MANGROVE THE mackerel are here in good numbers! Fishing in Noosa over the last week has seen some exceptional catches, with both offshore and the Noosa River fishing extremely well. Offshore, spotted mackerel have been plentiful, with numerous anglers getting their bag limit without too much trouble. The good sized schools can be easily spotted by the bird activity, with most lures offered quickly get snaffled up by a hungry mackerel. The other species that is among the spotties are the infamous Spanish mackerel. With a bag limit of five spotties and three spanish mackerel, anglers are having to go look for other species as they reach their limits quickly. On the bottom we have seen some nice reef species like coral trout, sweet lip and cobia with the deeper reefs holding pearl perch and snapper. On the beaches we are seeing good catches of whiting as well as dart, bream and tailor. Sand worm have been one of the fa-

vored baits, with most of the fish inhabiting the close in gutters. Kids have been having a ball while mum and dad are running up and down the beach baiting up and returning the smaller fish to the sea. Up north of Teewah the tailor have been on the chew, with the low light periods the most productive. Big bait like mullet fillets and large pilchards seem to be the most productive baits. In the river, mangrove jack are becoming increasingly active, with good sized jacks taking prawn style soft plastics around steep drop-offs and jetties, like the ones located in the back of Noosa Sound. Whiting are another species on the move at the moment, with the waters of the river mouth and the sheltered shallows of Weyba Creek providing the best results on these tasty fish. Elsewhere in the river trevally in various species are on the prowl, with “bust ups” occurring just about anywhere or anytime. The best method to taking advantage of the fish is to have a second rod set with a surface popper. Best of luck on your fishing adventures!

First roar for Lion pride NOOSA Lions head coach Ben Cahn put the players through their paces at their first pre-season training session on 3 January. The team is preparing for what is expected to be one of the most exciting seasons for the club, with the senior squad looking to cement its place in the top four of the Sunshine Coast Football League and progress to the FFA Cup in 2015. Throughout the coming season,

Ben will be calling on experienced players to maintain stability on the pitch while bringing in new talent to demonstrate creative football style and flair that he hopes will elevate the squads back into premiership winning status. The team took to the pitch at Girraween Sports Complex on 3 January to sweat it out in pre-season training.

The squad will feature a mix of experienced and emerging players.

THE Christmas holiday break was definitely a lifesaver’s dream - great weather, big crowds and safe surfing. Apparently some tourists must have read our safety advice, in particular regarding Alexandra Bay, for in this devil’s playground there was only one minor incident reported. This occurred when a tourist, a man in his sixties, had to be helped to the beach by a couple of local swimmers. The Sunshine Beach roving IRB patrol was informed and on arrival helped with a short application of assisted breathing. After resting, their patient was back to normal. A major plus for our lifesavers has been the outstanding patronage given to our supporter clubs at Noosa Heads and Sunshine Beach by both the tourists and locals. It is now obvious that the decisions made by these clubs to move from chook raffles into the world of big business has been a step in the right direction. “The support we have received in our Supporter Club has been truly outstanding,” said Sunshine Beach club president Craig Law. “Let’s not forget that the money

thank our tourists and locals for their support.’’ Memorial Swim ON Sunday morning at 9am the Noosa Club conducted its 12th Annual Shirley Strachan Memorial Swim. This event which is proudly sponsored by McDermott Aviation was held in perfect conditions, with 48 clubbies taking part in the 1.2 kilometre course. Organised and conducted by

Bruce and Sandy Warren, this is the only swimming event that can be truly regarded as a club tradition. The importance of this event cannot be stressed enough, for with the increasing number of mobile patrols being called on to work in big seas, the importance of having experienced surf swimmers as crewmen is vital. In times of rescue work in cyclonic conditions, things can go wrong. The lives of not only the patients but

also the crew personal will depend on their surf fitness. Apart from the ongoing success of the swim, one of the highlights was that amongst the participants there were three veteran club members that have swam in all 12 - Peter French, Gina Lynch and Tony Wetherell. For Tony it was a great performance, for at 74 years he was the oldest to participate. It is people like this that set the benchmark for others to reach. Also taking part was another veteran Tony Le Mansey who at 56 has competed in 11 of the swims. First home was 15-year-old Jaspre Outram. The Year 10 student at Sunshine State High School said it was a hard swim but conditions were good and it was a great experience. In carnival events, he represents Noosa swimming as a member of the under 17 surf team. In keeping with his policy of encouraging the young to take part, Bruce presents prizes at random to contestants and to see the smile on their faces when their effort is publicly acknowledged, makes it all worthwhile. As he has said on many occasions, one of the goals of the swim is to build confidence in the young members. This is exactly what the Warren Team is doing.

Clubs’ new wave of funding “Collectively, the Federal Government is spending $15 million on a package to cut drowning deaths across the nation. This includes $4 million for the Royal Life Saving Society, to tackle the problem of inland drownings, as well as $1 million a year to produce, develop and distribute water safety materials, to educate more than 1.5 million Australian children aged four years and under. “The educational material developed by former Olympic swimming coach Laurie Lawrence delivers important water safety messages to young children in a fun and engaging way. “These water-safety materials are being distributed nationally to child care centres, kindergartens and play groups, and are also available online at www.kidsalive.com.au,” Mr Truss said.

SLSA’s Coastal Drowning Report identified 121 coastal drowning deaths in Australia in 2013. “Each year, dedicated life savers in Australia perform around 12,000 rescues and 32,000 first aid treatments on our nation’s beaches. The Beach Safety Equipment Fund provides support directly where it is needed most - to support the volunteers surf lifesavers patrolling these beaches,” Mr Truss said. “In addition to $8 million in funding to provide equipment to our lifesavers, the Australian Government is also providing $2 million to reduce drowning at dangerous ‘black spot’ beaches and increase public awareness of coastal hazards such as rip currents and rock fishing.

FOUR surf life saving clubs in the Wide Bay will receive a $25,000 funding boost over the next five years, to prevent drownings at local beaches, Federal Member for Wide Bay and Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss announced recently. “The funding will assist Sunshine Beach, Peregian Beach, Noosa Heads and Rainbow Beach surf life saving clubs to purchase new rescue equipment, first aid and medical supplies so our life savers can continue to save lives,” Mr Truss said. “The beautiful beaches of Wide Bay are a major attraction for local residents and tourists alike, and I expect that our region’s beaches will be well-frequented this summer, due to the warm weather. World set to surf Noosa NOOSA is set to play host to the biggest field of international surfers yet at this year’s Cricks Noosa Festival of Surfing. With more than 25 per cent of competitors from overseas in 2014 creating a new record for the festival, organisers say that the number of early entries from California, Hawaii, New Zealand, Japan, France and the UK indicate that the record will be broken again, with the world’s best surfers vying for around $25,000 in prize money. The return of the Vans Duct Tape Invitational (last seen in Noosa in 2013) will ensure that many of the leading traditional longboarders from around the world will be in town with former world champion Joel Tudor to take on local stars like Harrison Roach and Jai Lee. Big names like California’s Alex Knost and Justin Quintal, and UK’s James Parry are expected to be on the invitation list, while stars who have performed brilliantly in Noosa in past years, like Santa Cruz’s C.J. Nelson, are also coming back. But Festival Director Phil Jarratt said that even more overseas entries were being received from unknowns coming to represent their clubs. “The success of last year’s Deus Womp Comp has brought all the body surfers out of the woodwork, and we have entries in that from all over the world,“ he said. “One club in California

has eight members entered and another dozen or so coming to support them. “But the Classic Malibu Teams Challenge is also bringing in groups of boardriders to compete for their club or home beach.” The eight-day festival will kick off on Saturday, 7 March, immediately following the dedication and celebration of the Noosa National Surfing Reserve, set for Friday, 6 March. Said Phil Jarratt: “Because the Surfing Reserve has been a community initiative on behalf of all beach users, the first weekend is going to be a celebration of that, with surfboard riders, surf life savers, paddlers, body surfers and all kinds of watermen and waterwomen taking part in team and exhibition events. “We’re inviting the absolute legends of all aspects of surfing to participate.” There will also be plenty of fun and novelty events, including the VetshopAustralia Surfing Dogs Spectacular and the Little Humid Costume Surf. The first weekend will also host the Jeep Waterman Challenge, with Noosa’s reigning champ Harrison Roach and former world champion Josh Constable taking on invitees such as longboard world champions Harley Ingleby and Taylor Jensen in longboard, shortboard, finless and body surf events. All teams events plus

stand up paddle racing and surfing will also begin over the first weekend, with amateur and professional longboarding divisions beginning Monday. The entertainment hub for the festival will once again be the PJ Burns Festival Village, stretching from First Point to the surf club, with surf expo stalls and the XXXX Summer Beach Bar and Zinc Stage front and centre. Free live entertainment will be provided every afternoon and evening, with top bands Cheap Fakes, Band of Frequencies and Sydney surf funksters Expand and Surrender already booked, and Sunday night’s “Surf Unearthed” show expected to unveil some spectacular new music acts from the region. Entertainment sponsors Cafe Le Monde will provide much of the beach stage music during the sunset hours, then feature longer sets with the bands at the Hastings Street venue later in the evening. Movies playing on the festival’s beach screen will include Behind The Tide, the director’s cut of Searching For Michael Peterson (presented by director Jolyon Hoff ) and the official premiere of the Noosa Festival documentary, 8 Days Of Pure Stoke.
