Deadly heat By ANEEKA SIMONIS PAKENHAM had the highest number of children locked in cars across the state, according to statistics released by Ambulance Victoria last month. Between 1 September 2013 and 31 August 2014, 30 children under the age of 13 were reported as being locked in a car in Pakenham which was well above the state average. A Pakenham mother of two kids, aged six and two, waited with a boy she said was locked in his father’s car for almost 40 minutes in Lakeside Square last week. “It was shocking,” she said. “When I parked, there was already a car next to me who was watching the kid. They were on the phone to police, but the father arrived back before the police did. “When he came back, he had a slab of beer and carton of cigarettes.” The alarming figures, up around 25 per cent from last year, prompted serious warnings from a Pakenham police officer urging parents to take care over the hot summer months. “I share the concern of Ambulance Victoria with children being left in vehicles or indeed, locked in vehicles. It can possibly lead to serious injury or the death of a child,” Senior Sergeant Trevor Teer said. “I encourage all parents to prepare for their day and ensure they will not be leaving children in closed or locked vehicles, particularly on a hot day.” Ambulance Victoria said they were disappointed by the 10 per cent state-wide increase of children being locked in cars over the 12-month period which was highest over the hot summer months. “Tragically, there have been cases of children dying in hot cars in Victoria in recent years,” group manager Brett Drummond said. “Being left in a hot car can quickly become life threatening for babies and young children as they can’t regulate their body temperature like adults can. “It doesn’t have to be a scorching hot day for the car to quickly heat up. Tests by Ambulance Victoria found that even on a 29-degree day the inside of a car can reach 44 degrees within 10 minutes and hit 60 degrees within 20 minutes.” Last year state-wide paramedics responded to 1165 cases of children under the age of 13 locked in cars, with the majority of children being less than four years of age.

Briefly Pokie arson A BETTING machine was set alight by a disgruntled gamer in Pakenham last week. Police said the frustrated gamer was playing on a pokie machine at the Castello’s Pakenham Hotel about 2.30am on Thursday 11 December when he threw the ‘Reserve’ sign into the coin tray and set it on fire. The fire, which left minor damage to the machine and carpet, was quickly extinguished by staff. Hotel staff told police the gamer rode away from the venue on a pushbike.
Raiders hit hall PAKENHAM Scout Hall was broken into last week. Raiders broke into the James Street hall about 6.30pm on Thursday 11 December via a window. Police said the thieves also tried to force a locked door but don’t believe anything was stolen.
Break-in attempt RESIDENTS of a Pakenham home slept through an attempted break-in last week. Between 10pm on Wednesday 10 December and 7am on Thursday 11 December, burglars unsuccessfully tried to break into a Moroka Green home. Police believe the thieves also failed in their attempt to break into a shed on the property.

Garden -- gift of nature CASEY families took part in the opening of a brand new nature garden designed to aid the development of young children in the area. On Saturday 29 November the garden was opened at Lend Lease community, Mayfield in Cranbourne East. Neil O’Connor, Lend Lease general manager for Victoria, says that the company has commenced construction of a nature garden at its Mayfield community based on this research.
“We build communities and, at the foundation of healthy communities, are healthy families,” he said. “The nature garden at Mayfield creates natural landscape with stones perfect for sitting on, wooden structures perfect for climbing, and sand and dirt perfect for getting hands into.” The natural playground is located on three hectares of woodland and centred around an old oak tree. Its features include a sand pit, basket swings and balance beams. City of Casey mayor Mick
Morland said this playground reflected council’s pro-active approach towards childhood development. “It’s not just the kids who love playgrounds; these are special places in which family relationships are forged and lifelong memories are created,” he said. The garden opening also coincided with the opening of a new display village, with local residents invited to come along and be part of the up and coming community.

Fake buyer steals three cars A THIEF using a false name is accused of stealing three cars in Casey after duping their owners into letting him drive vehicles they are trying to sell. Police allege a man using the alias Craig Watson reponds to for sale notices. Police believe he uses a false ID, a photocopy of a recipt for a probationary licence. After winning the trust of the vehicle’s owner, he asks to test drive the car. During the test drive the thief deliberately causes a minor accident. When the vehicle owner gets out to inspect the damage, the crook drives off leaving the hapless owner by the side of the road. The missing vehicles have all been Toyota Corollas. The victims, in Narre Warren and Cranbourne, were fleeced of their cars between 4 and 13 December. The thief is described as tall with black hair, possibly of Lebanese origin. None of the cars have been recovered. Anyone with information can contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Heads up for new service By LACHLAN MOORHEAD HOLT MP Anthony Byrne visited Fountain Gate Headspace last week to welcome the beginning of the facility's services. The new centre, located at Victor Crescent in Narre Warren, will be officially opened next February, but the local youth will be able to visit the facility and receive mental health support from 6 January. Mr Byrne was joined by Anne Peek and Christine Crosbie from the South Eastern Melbourne Medicare Local when he visited the facility last Friday. “After a long community campaign led by Casey’s youth it is exciting that a large headspace centre will be fully operational in January 2015,” Mr Byrne said. “Casey’s youth should be proud of their campaign for this much needed service for the local community. “Many young people go through some challenging times but to have a local mental health centre that can provide support and assistance to our rapidly growing youth population is vitally important. “It is important that the families are aware of this facility in Fountain Gate which will be of great value to young people in our region.” The opening comes after the facility was confirmed in August following concerns aired by federal Labor that the Narre Warren rollout may be in jeopardy. Mr Byrne had previously raised doubts about the future of the facility following the release of the Federal Budget, which revealed the removal of Medicare Locals. Funding to the South East Melbourne Medicare Local (SEMML), which was awarded the tender to run a Headspace office at the Fountain Gate Shopping Centre precinct in Narre Warren earlier this year, will cease on 30 June 2015 as the

But Headspace CEO Chris Tanti confirmed the Narre Warren Headspace project would go ahead. “To ensure the next round of Headspace centres are established within the original timeframes, Medicare Locals selected to operate new centres have been invited to lead the establishment under an interim agreement,” he said in August. “The running of the Headspace centre in Narre Warren will be reviewed as we get closer to the transition from Medicare Locals to Primary Health Networks. “We will work with the federal Minister for Health to determine the best way forward to ensure the sustainability and success of the centre. “Our main priority is to provide the full range of Headspace services to young people and families in this community.” Fountain Gate Headspace will provide mental health advice to young people aged from 12 to 25.

Letters Budget bumps IN a letter to the editor (Vote Against Rate Rises, News, 9 October) I expressed great concern about the waste of ratepayers’ money by Casey Council on roundabouts and traffic islands. Since then I’ve been on a bus tour (843, 845, 849 and 861) in Four Oaks Ward, Endeavour Hills. I was terribly shocked to see the size of some of those roundabouts, most of them were painted and having an artistic design on top. What a waste of public money! Some of the drivers I spoke with told me that many of those roundabouts constitute a hurdle to their driving safely. On my bus tour, I also noticed that Casey council has embarked on another frenzied project that wastes ratepayers’ money. I mean the installation of speed humps. Nobody can argue against the importance or ne-

cessity of speed humps in some local areas. But the sizes, as well as the number of speed humps that are placed on a single road by Casey council is alarming. I have read that in the financial year 20132014 the City of Casey installed a total of 48 speed humps at a cost of $493,692.60. In the current financial year 2014-2015 $800,000 had been allocated in the City of Casey budget for local traffic management. At this point in time the expenditure on speed humps in 2014-2015 is anticipated to be approximately $400,000. This is pure madness. Much of that money could be used to reduce rates. Many people know that speed humps in some areas have been removed after protests by local residents. Such protests cite a lack of any consultation as one factor. As ratepayers, we would like to know if Casey council has had any consultation with the fleeced ratepayers before spending money on such a never-ending project. Eliezer Francois, Endeavour Hills.

NOW that the state election is over, serious questions must be asked of current Casey councillors and failed Liberal Party political aspirants Geoff Ablett, Amanda Stapledon and Susan Serey. Why the rush to get to Spring Street? Do they think so little of council or local ratepayers that they’re seeking to jump ship after only two years? I know in response we’ll hear talk of "well, my experience in council makes me ideally placed to represent the electorate, I have a record of achievement etc etc". Well, this is just self-serving twaddle. Being elected to council is an honour and privilege and brings with it an ethical obligation to put the interests of local ratepayers first. However, seeking to cut and run half-way through a term of office is hardly consistent with this view and reflects poorly on the councillors involved. After all, I don’t recall seeing or hearing anything during the last council election about them seeking to leave after only two years. If they had, we could reasonably expect that ratepayers would have thought very carefully about voting into office someone who is not committed to serving out a whole term. There is nothing wrong with aspiring to higher office, however there’s a time and place for everything, and residents in Balla Balla, Edrington and Mayfield are entitled to ask whether councillors Ablett, Stapledon and Serey are as committed as they should be to looking after ratepayers’ interests. Unfortunately, their involvement in this election mirrors the ill-judgement of the City of Casey as a whole in erecting ‘Casey sup-

It is my earnest hope that council’s support for this project has not been influenced by political considerations, however to say it looks and smells bad is an understatement of major proportions. Foolish and misguided actions such as this will only exacerbate council’s poor standing in the eyes of many in the community. This is not the fault of Casey’s dedicated staff, many of whom do an excellent job under difficult circumstances. Rather, it is a failure of leadership at an elected and executive level that is doing most to harm council’s interests and that of the communities it purports to represent. Not friends I WOULD like to respond to a letter to the editor (Worth a Visit, News, 11 December) by Florin Bordei. As president of the Friends of Hampton Park Library, I am disappointed at Mr Bordei’s attack on Cr Rosario in reference to our friends meetings. The friends send the minutes and the agenda to councillors, a couple of politicians and CCLC staff as a courtesy. As they are not members of the friends, we do not necessarily expect them to attend or even apologise for not attending. When we need assistance or attendance from councillors or others, we will send a direct invite. In relation to the photo opportunities. Cr Rosario is often ‘invited’ by groups to a variety of events and, yes, many do have “photo opportunities” but attending such events is part of a councillor’s role. Shock and awe By LACHLAN MOORHEAD A DOCTOR responsible for fitting a Doveton man with a revolutionary new defibrillator that delivers lifesaving shocks without the need for electrical leads to enter the heart has praised the technology. Mark Heenan, 53, underwent the special heart operation at Monash Heart Clayton on Tuesday last week which saw him become the first man in Australia implanted with the subcutaneous implantable cardioverter defibrillator (S-ICD), to protect him against the risk of cardiac arrest. The new defibrillator, already available overseas but only approved by the Australian Government this month, is seen as a significant advantage for patients because it avoids the risk of life-threatening infections that could travel directly to the veins and heart through
electrical leads. The subcutaneous defibrillator was implanted just below Mr Heenan’s armpit with the electrical lead inserted under the skin and along his breast bone. Mr Heenan, who is already on heart medication, agreed to the operation after he was recognised by doctors as being at risk of having an electrical fault in his heart. Monash Heart electro physiologist Emily Kotschet said the new technology significantly reduced the risks associated with regular defibrillators. “The risk during the procedure is less because the actual implant has less risk - normally you have to poke around with a needle to find the vein to the heart and now you don’t have to do this,” she said. “And in the long term, you don’t have the risk of having a lead in the heart - the lead can

sometimes break and often can’t be pulled out, so it’s stuck there. “This operation was made available for us to do and we’re innovative and we wanted to try it.” But Dr Kotschet noted that the subcutaneous defibrillator would not always be suitable. “It’s not for every patient, it’s what we call a shock box, it gives a cardiac shot like the ambulance would,” she said. “But it can’t do all the fancy pacemaker work, it’s a simplified version but a number of patients who need a defibrillator just need the shock box.” Mr Heenan underwent the surgery for an hour and was required to stay overnight at Monash Heart as a precaution. “He’ll have a week off work and then he’ll be back paying taxes,” Dr Kotschet said.

Hamper relief By ANEEKA SIMONIS DOZENS of families breathed a sigh of relief earlier this week after getting a much-needed hand by a local charity group ahead of Christmas. Crisis relief centre 4Cs in Pakenham distributed hundreds of Christmas hampers to struggling families across the shire at Outlook Community Centre on Tuesday 16 December. Plenty of families finding it hard to make ends meet were thankful to bag a hamper, which included a generous amount of food and toys for kids. The day of good cheer was also facilitated by a range of volunteers including 12-yearold Wilson, who helped carry the hampers to people’s cars.
Erin, 10, and Anne Ramp both volunteered to give out items.
4Cs operations manager Abiola Ajetomobi said the hampers allowed families to enjoy Christmas. “Hamper distribution means that up to 1000 families can be rest assured that the muchneeded items for Christmas
meals and toys for the kids are taken care of,” she said. “With crisis becoming really complex and unique to each household, 4Cs is committed to giving hope to families that will otherwise struggle during this season.”

Singing out to celebrate STUDENTS from Berwick Lodge Primary School have brought some Christmas singing cheer to Casey this week. As part of the school’s festive celebrations, on Wednesday the students performed a selection of well-known Christmas songs to celebrate the end of the year. Performing Arts teacher Jyade Old had worked with the students in recent weeks so they could perform their favourite Christmas songs, including Jingle Bells and All I want for Christmas.
The finale of the Christmas Concert saw the Prep to Grade 2 students sing together, belting out a rendition of The 12 Days of Christmas. The Berwick Lodge students are also giving out gifts this holiday seasons, as well as receiving them. Families have purchased gifts and placed them under the school’s Christmas tree in the office foyer, which will then be collected and distributed to people in need by a representative from the Christian Helpers in Primary Schools program (CHIPS).
CHIPS, based in the state’s south-east, was established in 1999 and has worked closely with Berwick Lodge over a number of years. Berwick Lodge acting assistant principal Sandra McCrum said it was incredibly rewarding to assist support families who need help the most. “This provides our students and families with the opportunity to give back to our community and support those less fortunate than ourselves,” she said.

COUNCIL in partnership with Cricket Victoria have batted down the costs of a local cricket program to boost participation in the sport. Through Sport and Recreation Victoria, the council received funding from Cricket Victoria which will subsidise 50 per cent of the costs for new participants who join the MILO in2Cricket program. Crowds gathered at the Marriott Waters Recreation reserve in Lyndhurst on Saturday 6 December to celebrate the funding and see what the program is all about. The Lyndhurst Cricket Club was one of four to receive funding. The other clubs are Devon Meadows, Endeavour Hills and Kalora Park. In2Cricket is an entry level participation program for five to eight-year-olds which includes fun, safe activities that teaching children the basic skills to play cricket in a non-competitive environment. Each player receives a start pack which includes a bat, hat, shirt and a ball to practise their skills. City of Casey mayor Mick Morland thanked Cricket Victoria for their funding. “Cricket Victoria provided this funding part of the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup legacy program, which aims to in-

He said the partnership would mean it could support up to 140 local kids and help them get their first foot on the pitch. “This funding has helped council to foster growth in sport and leisure opportunities in Casey and promote physical activity in the Casey community,” he said. “Since council offered the 50 per cent subsidy at the start of the 2014/15 cricket season,
many families have taken up the opportunity and their children are now enjoying the sport each week.” Cricket Victoria general manager of Game and Market Development Rohan O’Neill said that with the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup hitting out shores in February, the excitement for the season has grown. “Cricket is truly a game for everyon, and I would like to thank the City of Casey and the Victorian Government for helping to increase participation opportunities for junior cricketers within the area,” he said. Tom is tearing up the tracks By RUSSELL BENNETT BEACONSFIELD speed demon Tom Bramich just continues to go from strength to strength in his motorcycle racing career - winning this year’s Pirelli Road Race Series in both the Sprint and TT categories. The impressive result capped off another stellar 12 months for the 18-year-old who dominated last year’s Pirelli Sprint Series, winning each of the 22 races he completed from the 24 on the competition’s calendar. He started racing two years ago and has already torn up some of the country’s most famous circuits - including Eastern Creek, Queensland Raceway, Phillip Island and Winton. There were four rounds of this year’s Pirelli championship - two at Broadford, one at Phillip Island, and one at Mac Park in Mount Gambier - and he again showed his superior class in coming out on top. In addition, he also rode a Moto3 bike twice this year - including at a round of the Australian Superbike Championships at the Island. “I crashed and had a pretty bad weekend, to be honest, but it was still a really good learning experience for me,” he said. After gaining invaluable experience on the Honda Moto3 for Ron Angel Classic Racing, Tom is set to race in the Australian Championship starting early next year, in addition to the Island Classic at Phillip Island

Although he’s only been racing for a few years, Tom has been around bikes all his life and can’t remember missing a Phillip Island Moto GP race. When asked last year what he liked most about racing, his answer was straightforward: “I love pushing my bike to the limit - trying to be the best, and the challenge of that". The bike-obsessed youngster said racing was his whole life. And it runs in the family. His
younger brother Ben, at just 13, participated at junior development days at Broadford and Mount Gambier in the past year and raced the last two races of the season, dropping over 10 seconds from his previous best time during the Victorian Road Racing Championship. Tom wouldn’t be where he is already without the support of arguably his biggest backer outside of his family - Ron Angel - and other sponsors including Tingate Racing, Nelsigns, Whinner Motorcylces in Narre Warren, and Nolan helmets.
Extra training… extra medal By JARROD POTTER ONE medal would have been enough for Amy Tyrrell, but to pick up a pair from the recently held national schools athletics championships was beyond her wildest dreams. Tyrrell, 11, from Berwick, was thrilled to pick up a gold and a silver medal at the School Sport Australia 12-and-under Track and Field Championships, held last week in Penguin, Tasmania. “I feel great and amazing to actually take a medal home with me to show and remember the great experience,” Tyrrell said. Picking up her first national title - as part of the under-12 girls’ 800 sprint medley relay - Tyrrell ran the first 200-metre leg to help her team finish in 1.56.63 minutes and clinch the gold medal. “I was running 200m at the start and we actually had a good team and were coming second, but South Australia was disqualified so we got gold,” Tyrrell said. “Feels good to win as we definitely deserved it - all the girls tried really hard in training to get our relay passes good and everything clicked.” Tyrrell earned her first medal of the carnival as she was narrowly pipped into second place in the long jump final after securing a personal best

She had to work hard to improve her long jumping to that level, but she was pleased to have put in the extra training to ensure she could take home that medal. “My long jump wasn’t really going well before that - nothing was clicking, it wasn’t right,” Tyrrell said. “Then we did a lot of training with my dad and when I went to compete with my dad my first jump was 4.74m and I was pretty happy with that because I didn’t expect to get that far on my first jump.
“On my last jump I jumped a personal best of 5.02 and the winner jumped 5.03, it was very close but I wasn’t disappointed as I know that I got a PB for one and to take home a medal as well.” Capping off her successful campaign at the national schools championships for Tyrrell was earning a spot in the 200m final where she finished seventh. She wanted to thank her family, teachers Mr B and Mr J and everyone who has supported her athletic dreams.

The difference between the contenders and sides outside the top four in the top tier became increasingly apparent as the Lions were dismissed for just 171 chasing Tooradin’s first innings of 262. The undefeated Cardinia rightfully sits atop the ladder after Round 7. The Bulls have hardly put a foot wrong. But the Gulls are starting to hit their straps and with plenty of upside still left, they loom large over the competition. Cal O’Hare, still nowhere near full fitness following his knee surgery, only bowled three overs on Saturday while Aaron Avery isn’t bowling at all at the moment due to a side strain. Russ Lehman, Premier’s leading run-scorer, was superb at the top of the order for Pakenham on Saturday, with his only false shot coming on 92 when he flicked Ash Adams straight to square leg. Lions skipper Jason Williams (25) also offered plenty of resistance and refused to simply give his wicket away. But worryingly for Pakenham, the same can’t be said for much of the rest of its line-up. Renowned partnership-breaker Adams (5/35) got a roll on after removing Lehman - finishing with his first five-wicket haul of the season. But it was Hamill and newcomer Josh Lownds who really set the tone - combining for 5/80 in 34 overs. Speaking to the Gazette after play on Saturday, Hussey praised Hamill’s work-rate and added that Lownds, formerly of District side Nar Nar Goon/ Maryknoll, was “just superb”. The Tooradin skipper was worried with Lehman and Williams at the crease but he knew what his bowlers were capable of with Lehman’s dismissal. “We knew we couldn’t take anything lightly we just had to be on the whole day,” he said. That ruthlessness is a dangerous sign for the rest of the competition. In other local Premier scores from across the weekend, Emerald (130) was no match for Cardinia (9/279); Kooweerup’s modest 154-run first innings was still enough to secure an outright victory over a terrible Upper Beaconsfield (43 and 80); and Merinda Park (1/92) cruised past Beaconsfield (91) in its rain-shortened clash. In District division, Pakenham Upper-Toomuc (165) clinched the points against Clyde (106); Lyndhurst Vikings (5/236) stormed past Devon Meadows (222) on the back of a massive 136 not out from Jason Hameeteman; Nar Nar GoonMaryknoll (6/231) cruised to victory against St Francis Xavier (164); and Officer (6/180) continued its impressive start to the season against Cranbourne Meadows (6/122). Finally, Pakenham’s Sub-District side will look to rebound quickly from a horror day with the bat on Saturday. Set a whopping 309 for victory by Tooradin, the Lions could only muster 89 with Dale McCraw top-scoring with 17 and Tom Bethune (3/16) leading the way with the ball for the Gulls.
