Murder suicide probe

A man who is believed to have committed suicide by driving his car into a truck on Hopkins Road, Truganina, on Sunday may have earlier killed his estranged wife.

e man, Sunil Beniwal, is understood to have killed estranged wife Shikha at her home in Deer Park before driving his car into the truck in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Police believe an intervention order the woman took out against her husband had expired just four days before her death.

e couple’s three-year-old son was inthehouseatthetimeofthesuspected murder and has been taken by police into the care of the Department of Human Services.

Police found the woman’s body in a Corey Close house about 7.45am on Sunday following investigations into a car crash in Truganina three hours earlier.

Police had gone to the house where Beniwal lived to inform relatives of his death when they made the grim discovery.

Beniwaldiedwhenhiscarveeredinto an oncoming truck on Hopkins Road just a er 4am.

Homicide Detective Sergeant Paul Tremain said police were aware of a history of domestic violence between the couple going back to at least 2012.

“ ere was an intervention order taken out in 2012 which expired four days ago,” Detective Sergeant Tremain said.

“ ese are just shocking circumstances of two people who couldn’t work out their di erences and

it’s ended in a tragedy like this.”

Police have yet to release details of howthewomandied,citingtheneedfor an autopsy.

Detective Sergeant Tremain said the death was being treated as suspicious and no other suspects were involved.

“At this stage, I can’t really go into what’s happened,” he said.

NeighbourswholivedintheDeerPark street said it was a quiet neighbourhood and most residents did not know their neighbours.

Neighbour Sandra Moran, who lives across the street, said the man killed in the accident had split from his wife and lived in the house with two tenants, a young couple who had recently moved in.

“It’s a bit disturbing,” she said.

Another neighbour said the couple was divorced, but the wife visited the house frequently and shared custody of their son.

Hospital brings 270 jobs

A 112-bed private hospital in Werribee is expected to open its doors in early 2017. ehospital,whichwillberunbyStVincent’s Private, was announced in June as part of the East Werribee Employment Precinct. It will be built on four hectares of land on Hoppers Lane next to Wyndham Private and across the road from Werribee Mercy Hospital.

e project is expected to cost $75 million. It’s anticipated the hospital will be able to treat more than 16,000 patients a year and employ about 270 people.

St Vincent’s Private Melbourne chief

executive Ian Grisold said the three-storey hospital would include orthopedic, surgical, urology, obstetric, rehabilitation cardiac, and ear, nose and throat services.

Mr Grisold said conceptual designs for the hospital were complete and tenders for the project would be sought early next year.

Construction is likely to start in the second half of 2015 and take about 18 months.

“It is an enormous project for St Vincent’s,” Mr Grisold said. “It will help address gaps in services in Wyndham. e hospital will grow with the community.”

Mr Grisold said the hospital would initially open with about 50 beds, with the rest to be

opened as demand increased. An 80-bed aged-care centre will be built on the hospital site, catering for residents with dementia and providing respite care.

Mr Grisold said the hospital would work hand-in-hand with Werribee Mercy Hospital tocreatethebesthealthservicesforWyndham.

He said the two organisations would look at jointrecruitingopportunitiestoattractdoctors to the area.

“We’ll work very closely with Mercy Health. ey have done wonderful work in Wyndham and co-location is a very successful model in Australia. ere are a lot of synergies between the organisations,” he said.

Top brains nudge VCE perfection

e wait is over for year 12 students from Wyndham schools, with VCE results released on Monday.

At Suzanne Cory High School, 200 students completed their VCE this year, with Frank Du named as the school’s dux.

e Sunshine West resident received the highest possible ATAR – 99.95.

He was one of 33 students across the state to receive a perfect score.

Frank said the score was beyond his expectations. He plans to study biomedicine at the University of Melbourne next year. “I was aiming for medicine all along.

Studying biomedicine gives me more options. I will be able to look at di erent study areas and decide for myself what path I want to take,” he said.

Fellow students Isabelle Cahoy, Matthew Lagamba, Ginny Croke and Peter Deng were also pleasantly surprised by their results, which they all received via text message on Monday morning.

“ e results are really pleasing. [ e students] were the rst group to come through

the school, so the results are signi cant for us. e students have set a high standard for the school,” she said.

At Hoppers Crossing Secondary College, Rushi Patel was named school dux with an ATAR of 96.6. He plans to study medicine.

Rounding out the school’s top three students were Magda Hagi Ali, who received an ATAR of 93, and Arunn Samgriathan, with an ATAR of 88.

Principal Wayne Terrill said the school had recorded its best results in 30 years.

Rate cap plan worries council

Wyndham council could be forced to cap its rates at the level of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) under a plan by the new state government.

Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins con rmed last week that Labor would follow through with an election promise to cap council rates at CPI.

Councils wanting to raise rates above CPI would have to appeal to an independent Essential Services Commission and explain why further increases were necessary.

“Residents have enough economic pressures on them with increased cost of living, and increased council rates just makelifetougher,”MsHutchinstold Star Weekly.

“Councils will have to focus on the services people need, not the stunts that drive up rates.”

Wyndham has increased rates by 5.5percentforthepast ve nancialyears and in 2013-14 received $137.5 million in rates revenue, up $10.8 million.

e council’s chief executive, Kerry ompson, said it would be concerned about any changes to the current system, which allowed councils to set their own rates and charges, as it may jeopardise their ability to provide services and infrastructuretomeetcommunityneeds.

“Growth councils such as Wyndham clearly have major infrastructure requirements and we’d be looking for the state government to o set any reduction in revenue that could result from rates-capping,” she said. “ e Consumer Price Index does not measure the cost of running government services.”

Victorian Local Government Association president Cr Sebastian Klein urged the government to reconsider.

“Councils simply cannot be asked to do more with less,” he said.

“Victorians saw in the Kennett era that rate-capping led to gaps in services and a decline in infrastructure, particularly in regional areas.”

Municipal Association of Victoria president Bill McArthur said the organisation was keen to meet Ms Hutchins as a matter of urgency to discusstherate-cappingpolicyandother issues a ecting local governments.

But Ratepayers Victoria president Jack Davissupportedtheproposedcap,saying councils across the state had increased rates by an average of eight per cent over the past 10 years.

“It’s about time [councils] acted in the interests of their constituents,” he said.

Stephen Sharp, who manages Tarneit’s Lifestyle Seasons retirement village, has recruited a group of residents who also regularly give blood at the Werribee Donor Centre as part of Australian Red Cross Blood Service’s Club Red group donor program.

A regular blood donor since the 1980s, Mr Sharp will now rely on the generosity of his fellow donors as he undergoes bowel cancer surgery this week.

While one in three Australians will need blood or blood products in their lifetime, only one in 30 gives blood each year.

Mr Sharp last week called on Wyndham residents to spare some time this festive season and give blood. “Giving blood is easy, rewarding and you never know when you or a family member will need it.”

Blood Service spokesman Colin Littlejohn urged residents to take part in the ultimate Secret Santa exchange – donating blood.

“Your donation will be one of the 27,000 blood gi s given to Australian patients this Christmas and will have a far reaching impact on the lives you save and the lives of their loved ones.”

Blitz to blast bad road behaviour

Police have a clear message for speeding drivers or those who take to Wyndham’s roads a ected by alcohol or drugs this festive season – you will be caught.

As part of the statewide Summer Stay campaign, police will continue to saturate the city’s roads in a bid to reduce road trauma over the high-risk Christmas-New Year period. Road users can expect to be breath-tested,drug-testedandspeed-checked as part of police operations targeting speed,

impaired driving, fatigue, driver distraction and seatbelt o ences.

Wyndham police’s Inspector Frank Sells warned drivers they could be caught anywhere, any time these holidays.

“We will be targeting speed, alcohol and drug o ences and distraction o ences, such as drivers using mobile phones,” he said.

“Police will be enforcing the law on all roads across Wyndham throughout the Christmas-New Year period in an e ort to change the behaviour of some road users.”

Taylor says police will be checking speed and conducting random drug and alcohol testing around the clock.

will see our buses and patrol cars on major roads and in and around entertainment districts, but you will also nd them on the back roads home.

“We continue to see too many deaths and injuries as a result of bad driving behaviour. e message is pretty simple: if you are going to drink or take drugs, don’t drive.”

Water play park open again

A Werribee water play park that shut in October a er complaints that adults and children had slipped and injured themselves, has reopened.

Village Park, at Riverwalk Estate on the former site of the Werribee Treatment Plant, was closed on October 24, just 17 days a er opening.

Operator Places Victoria temporarily

closed the park on October 20 to install an anti-slip coating in a bid to improve safety. But it was forced to shut the park again four days later while it investigated other safety improvements.

Places Victoria said in a statement that it had tested a number of anti-slip surfaces and found that the most e ective solution was to sandblast the water play areas to create a coarser surface and improve the grip.

Map for healthy choices

ere’s now an easy way to nd Wyndham’s fresh fruit and vegetables, with the launch of a new council map.

It follows the release of a council report last month, which showed half of the city’s residents are overweight or obese, while only 2.5 per cent eat the recommended two serves of fruit and ve vegetables a day – the state’s third-lowest consumption rate.

e council’s community well-being portfolio holder, Cr Bob Fairclough, said the map, which is available in several languages, would play an important role in helping to improve the eating habits of the “rapidly growing community”.

“It lists all the fresh fruit and vegetable outlets in Wyndham City, including greengrocers, supermarkets and mixed businesses, and pinpoints their locations,” Cr Fairclough said.

“Only ve per cent of Wyndham adults consume the recommended ve serves of vegetables a day, so the map should make healthy choices a little easier for people.”

Kevin Hillier says ‘Bah, humbug’ to Happy Holidays

Inoted a lot of fuss over the fact the ‘Get Wyndham Moving’ campaign had reached 5000 signatures on the petition, and while that is impressive, it still means more than 95 per cent of the Wyndham population has not signed. I’m not trying to be a glass half empty person, but the reality is, this campaign is costing a lot of ratepayers’ money, and I don’t seeanytangibleprogress,doyou?Petitionsand rallies are good, but what we need is action. More red tape and bureaucracy only serve to feed the beast of inaction, it seems to me.

Christmas has a tendency to bring out the best and worst in people, a bit like driving. Some shoppers are happy, while others have no patience, no manners and no joy. I am lucky to be seeing Christmas through the eyes of my nine-year-old son. His excitement at seeing Santa in a shopping centre or a Christmas tree orstreetlightsmakesitspecialforallourfamily. I know Christmas can be a reminder that life isn’t great, but it certainly beats the alternative. Christmas should be about being nice to other people, relatives included, which is not always

the easiest thing but o en the most satisfying. It’s not about presents or stu ng our faces; it is about people, so make those whose life you touch feel special, because it can all be gone in the blink of an eye.

Have you noticed there are fewer Christmas lights around the streets of Wyndham this year? I can understand the power costs might have stopped some people, which is a pity but an economic reality. I hope we are not losing the Christmas spirit because of political correctness taking over. As far as I’m concerned, there is nothing wrong with saying Merry Christmas. Some suggest we should replace that with Happy Holidays – Bah, humbug to that. Apart from Christmas Day, I don’t get any holidays, and it’s the same for many others. NBN tax to hit new home buyers

Owners of newly built homes will be hit with a new $900 tax to connect to the National Broadband Network, the federal government announced last week.

e government said NBN Co would levy a one-time connection charge of $300 on new homes and conceded service providers would likely pass that charge on to consumers. NBN Co will also charge developers $600

for the deployment of the NBN to new homes, which they can pass on to home buyers.

Labor communications spokesman Jason Clare said the tax would hit those who could a ord it least – young families building their rst home. “Home prices are already very high; the last thing new home buyers need is a new NBN tax,” he said.

Christmas has come early for Wyndham Little Buddies Toy Library thanks to a $1500 donation from Werribee Plaza.

e library is a non-pro t, communityowned service which provides a ordable access to a wide range of educational toys for babies and children.

Last Monday, library volunteers – with the help of Santa and plaza management – went shoppingfornewtoystoaddtothecollection.

Werribee Plaza centre manager Jonathan Codman said the library was an important andmuch-neededlocalresource,particularly for disadvantaged residents.

“We are proud to support this service which brings so much joy and education to a lot of children and families in the area,” he said.

“ e library is very welcoming of all members of the community, no matter what their nancial situation, as toys are essential in every child’s early development.”

Library session co-ordinator Jenny Baker said they were extremely grateful to receive such a generous donation.

From Blue Heelers to Neighbours, Mad Max to Queen of the Damned ... when it comes to local and international lm and TV productions, Wyndham has been setting the scene for years.

Now lming has just wrapped up on e Dressmaker, starring Liam Hemsworth and Oscar winner Kate Winslet, with Little River’s Mount Rothwell Biodiversity Interpretation Centre being transformed into a township and playing a starring role.

Directed by Jocelyn Moorhouse and set in the early 1950s, the lm follows the story of a woman who returns to Australia from Europe to take care of her sick mother and to right the wrongs of the past. It’s due for release in October.

e 453-hectare Mount Rothwell centre at the foot of the You Yangs protects a large number of threatened native species, including the eastern and spotted-tail quolls, critically endangered southern brush tail rock wallabies, and the mainland’s largest population of the endangered eastern barred bandicoot.

Some of the centre’s wildlife, including birds and emus and a dog, Tess, also played key roles in the production.

Producer Sue Maslin said it was the perfect setting in which to create the main street of Dungatar, the small Australian country town depicted in the lm.

“We looked for the right location for three years and had very speci c requirements,” she said. “It had to be a small town which looked as if it was in the middle of nowhere, which was at but had a mountain range in the background, so it was an unusual combination.

“We searched all over Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia, but one day we received a call from Film Victoria about the You Yangs and as soon as we came out here we realised it was ideal.

“At Mount Rothwell, you have granite outcrops, the surrounding farming country

and the You Yangs, so it was a great spot to build our township.

“Our overseas visitors were blown away that we found somewhere less than an hour from Melbourne that looked is if it was in the middle of the bush. It’s a unique location with so much to o er.”

Wyndham mayor Peter Maynard said the council had approved more than a dozen lm requests this year, including advertisements and television productions.

Upcoming Australian mini-series Gallipoli and e Secret River have also used locations around Wyndham this year.

MP’s future still in doubt

More than two weeks a er the state election, thefutureofWesternMetropolitanLiberalMP

Andrew Elsbury remains unclear.

Mr Elsbury was the second MP on the Liberal Party ticket to represent the Western Metropolitan Region in the upper house of State Parliament behind Sunshine-based Bernie Finn.

About 92 per cent of the votes cast for the seat on November 29 have been counted.

So far, the Liberal Party has secured enough votes to ensure Mr Finn is re-elected but it’s unsure if they will get enough a er preferences to return Mr Elsbury.

Five MPs will be elected to represent the region.

So far, the ALP has secured enough votes to re-elect Cesar Melhem and Khalil Eideh. eGreensappearontracktosecureenough votes to have Colleen Hartland returned to Parliament.

Mr Elsbury said he would like to serve another term, but was preparing for the worst.

He listed securing funding for the redevelopment of Wyndham Central Secondary College and the opening of Wyndham Park Primary School as among his greatest achievements during his four years in Parliament.

Heurgedwhoevertookhisplaceintheupper house to ensure they represented the needs of the western suburbs and worked hard to secure the area its fair share of funding.

“I can hold my head high with what I have achieved and I hope whoever does take over from me will represent the interests of the west,” he said.

Counting is expected to be completed later this week.

Wyndham residents are being urged to head to Werribee Park on Sunday, March 15, to celebrate all things cheese and cider. The council’s annual Fromage A Trois – Cheese and Cider Festival, which is part of the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival, will give residents a chance to enjoy produce from some of Australia’s top specialist cheese and cider-makers. Thumbs up to health program

A program aimed at improving health through increased urban greening across the western suburbs has been recognised by Vic Health. The Greening the West initiative was recognised at recent Vic Health Promotion Foundation awards for its research into ways to encourage people to be more active. The program was awarded for its approach to two key public health challenges: physical inactivity and heat stress.

Poetic farewell on nal journey

Former Victorian Labor minister Lynne Koskyknewthemeaningof Ithaka,mourners were told at a packed Williamstown Town Hall during her state funeral on Friday.

Ms Kosky, 56, died at her Williamstown home on December 4 a er a long battle with breast cancer.

She is survived by her husband Jim Williamson, her daughter Hana and son Jackson.

Former premier Steve Bracks said he was glad Ms Kosky had been able to see the return of a Labor government in Victoria on November 29.

“One of her last messages was to Premier Daniel Andrews. She texted him on the night: ‘Well done Daniel Andrews. I can sleep well tonight’.”

Mr Andrews recited the poem, Ithaka, by Greek poet C.P. Cavafy.

Ms Kosky had fallen in love with the poem a er honeymooning in Ithaka in June, 1991.

Reverend Alan Marr said the poem wasn’t a reference to a tourist brochure but to the journey being more important than the destination.

Friend and colleague Di Fleming, addressing Ms Kosky directly, said: “We know that you have learnt what Ithaka means.”

Ms Kosky’s children said they were grateful to have had more time with their mother a er she le politics in 2010 to spend more time with her family.

Struggling through tears, Jackson said: “I love you, mum, and I’ll never forget what you’ve done for me, Hana, and everyone who is here today. ank you for being the best mum I could ever imagine.”

Western Bulldogs president Peter Gordon, who had known Ms Kosky since they were teenagers, praised her role in saving the club. e gathering heard that Ms Kosky lived life to the fullest and on hearing her cancer

diagnosis said, “It is what it is”.

Ms Kosky was elected to the former Footscray council in 1986, serving as mayor from 1988-89. She was the member for Altona from

Worst crossings may go soon

Work on removing 50 of Melbourne’s most dangerous and congested level crossings, including those at Cherry Street and Werribee Street, could begin as early as next month.

e RACV has nominated its own priority list of the 11 most urgent crossing removals, with Cherry and Werribee streets high on its agenda.

Although the new Labor state government has not said which among its list of crossings will be the rst to go, it has promised to remove all 50 within eight years.

Initspre-electioncostings,thegovernment set aside more than $2 billion for 20 level crossing removals in its rst four-year term.

e festival started life as a CD compilation of French music; then, in 2007, Ponthieux launched live shows around Australia to introduce more people to music that, he says, is a good alternative to American and English pop culture.

So Frenchy So Chic will be at Werribee Park on January 11 from noon. Tickets cost $89; admission for children under 12 is free.

As part of Wyndham council’s anti-congestion campaign, it has called for the removal of all three of the city’s level crossings.

A council report released in October

revealed boom gates at Wyndham’s level crossings were closed for up to 35 minutes during peak periods.

But Werribee MP Tim Pallas said the government’s list was developed using information from the RACV and the Australian Level Crossing Assessment Model.

New school lls void

Wyndham Vale families will have more schooling options next year, with a new primary school set to open at the end of January.

Wyndham Vale South Primary School on Ribblesdale Avenue is on track to open its doors to the rst pupils on January 30.

Business manager Kerrie Henderson says the school will have classes from prep to

grade 6. “We have 140 students enrolled at the moment and it’s growing every day,” she said.

“Everything is on track and good to go from next year.”

Construction of the rst stage of the school has been completed, with work expected to start on the next stage in April.

Stage one includes the school’s administration building and learning areas.

It’s expected that the school’s enrolment will grow to about 300 pupils by 2016, although it

will eventually be able to accommodate up to 900.

Ms Henderson said the school would service the new Harpley estate on Blackforest Road, which will be home to 12,000 people.

Former Keilor Primary School principal Susan Seneviratne was appointed principal of the new school in August, having previously been the principal of Exford Primary School. Enrolments can be made by phoning 9741 6192.

Boy charged over attack

Policehavechargeda17-year-oldboyover an attack on a woman at Altona’s Cherry Lake in October, as the community this week prepares to unite to reclaim their parkland.

Sexual crimes squad detectives say a 31-year-old woman was walking on the northern side of the lake about 11am on October29whenshewasgrabbedaround theneckfrombehindandforcedtowards some bushes at knifepoint. A man on a bicycle was riding by and intervened, causing the attacker to ee.

Police arrested a 17-year-old boy about midnight the following night and placed him in a correctional facility.

Last Friday, he was charged with assault with intent to rape, unlawful imprisonment, recklessly causing injury and other assault-related o ences. He will appear at a children’s court at a later date.

On ursday, people are being invited to an event dubbed ‘Take back Cherry Lake’, with a free barbecue at 6pm and a walk or run around the lake at 6.30pm.

Hobsons Bay councillor Paul Morgan saidthecouncil-runeventaimedtounite and empower the community.

“We want men and women in our community to get together under the banner of these campaigns to recognise that community assets such as Cherry Lake are ours and we should be able to enjoy them.”

Knife death arrest

Altona North was under siege on Tuesday a er a suspect in a fatal stabbing barricaded himself inside a house in Blackshaws Road for more than eight hours.

e Special Operations Group was called in about 2am a er receiving a tip-o that there was a man inside wanted over the death of another man in the same street on Sunday.

AmanhunthadbeenunderwaysinceSunday a er a 46-year-old man was fatally stabbed in the torso shortly before 3pm in Blackshaws Road, near the corner of Grieve Parade.

Several motorists stopped and passersby performed CPR on the injured man before paramedics arrived, but he died at the scene.

Detective Acting Inspector Stuart Bailey said the married father of two young children, who lived locally, had been a “good Samaritan” who felt compelled to intervene when he saw a violent dispute between a man and a woman in the street.

“He was just a passerby. He saw the altercation between the male and female and felt compelled to interject. It’s resulted in these fatal circumstances.”

Detective Acting Inspector Bailey said it was believed the suspect, 21, of Carlton North, had gone back to the Blackshaws Road house on Monday. He was inside with his pregnant de facto partner, a 24-year-old Altona North woman, and her father who lives in the house.

e woman, who police believe was with the suspect on Sunday at the time of the stabbing, had ed the scene but was questioned by police later that a ernoon.

Detective Acting Inspector Bailey said the woman had not been compliant and could face charges. “We’re really worried about her

welfare given that she’s 22 weeks pregnant, so we want to make sure that she’s OK and we’ll look at that as the investigation unfolds.

“She hasn’t been a hostage. She’s been assisting the male involved in this incident and she’ll be further assisting our inquiries.”

A er an eight-and-a-half-hour stand-o and negotiationswithpolice,thepairemergedfrom the house about 10.30am.

“It appears that he wasn’t armed so it was

a fantastic amount of work put behind this by the SOG, other support services and our negotiators to a ect this safe arrest,” Detective Acting Inspector Bailey said.

A search warrant was subsequently executed at the property. A line search has turned up a knife which could be the weapon used in the attack. Police said the suspect had been up all night. Charges had not been laid at the time of going to press.

Houses hit price accelerator

House price growth in Melbourne’s inner west was in some cases more than double the citywide average in the six months to September, according to the Domain Group’s Australian Housing Market Year inReview

In Wyndham Vale, house prices rose by 5.7percentinthesamesix-monthperiod,with the suburb recording the greatest increase in prices in Wyndham. It was followed by Hoppers Crossing (5.5 per

cent), Tarneit (4.6), Werribee (4.1), Point Cook (3.4) and Truganina (2.3). Williams Landing was the only suburb in Wyndham to record a decline, with prices falling by 7.3 per cent.

Maidstone had the highest growth in the city of Maribyrnong, with 20 per cent growth and a median house price of $597,750 for the six months.

Altona had the highest growth in Hobsons Bay at 15.4 per cent and a median house price of$621,750.AcrossMelbourne,thegrowthrate was eight per cent.

Seeds of success sown

Werribee Park volunteers are helping to grow native wild owers and grass seeds for revegetation projects across the west.

e volunteers, many of whom are from refugee backgrounds, have propagated about 1000 plants and 25 species of owers and grasses which are ready for harvesting at Werribee Park.

e revegetation project is a partnership between Parks Victoria, AMES and the Western Melbourne Catchments Network.

Parks Victoria ranger Adam Smith said the project was attracting a lot of attention.

“It’s a combination of clever ideas; growing yourownnativeplantsforlocalre-vegetation, using recycled polystyrene boxes as planters andthewickingself-wateringsystem,plusit’s promoting the careers of keen volunteers,” Mr Smith said.

e wild owers and grass seeds grown by the volunteers will be used in projects across

the west, such as restoring the understory along Kororoit Creek and creating a native wild ower display along the Federation Trail near Altona.

ere are also plans to involve schools in the project from next year, with students set to grow plants from the harvested seeds which will then be planted along the Federation Trail.

Western Melbourne Catchments Network spokeswoman Colleen Miller hoped the project would be able to produce enough seeds to use in future projects in grassy woodlands across the western suburbs.

For example, Spotswood had 2 per cent growth and a median house price of $660,000 compared with 7.7 per cent growth and a median house price of $619,000 in neighbouring Footscray.

DrWilsonsaidthemorepeoplewereattracted to the “atmospherics” of a neighbourhood, the more popular and expensive it became.

Henry may reign again

A Wyndham eatre Company production has caught the eye of the state’s peak body for amateur theatre.

WTC’s production of e Lion in Winter, whichwasstagedatWyndhamCulturalCentre earlier this year, received seven nominations at the recent Victorian Drama League Awards.

Set in 1183, the play depicted the personal and political con icts of England’s King Henry II, his wife Eleanor of Aquitaine and their children, Richard, Geo rey and John, as they tried to work out who would be Henry’s successor.

WTC committee member Alaine Beek said the show was nominated for awards for best set design,bestlighting,bestsoundandbestdrama production, as well as a special adjudicators’ award for “masterful set changes”.

Lead actors Vicki Russell and Phillip Cameron-Smith were also recognised for their performances.

“ ecastandcrewinvolvedinthisambitious production were thrilled to be so highly acknowledged by the VDL,” Ms Beek said.

Teresa Vizintin has been educating and supporting young people for much of her working life. She says she’s “really proud of our young people”, writes Rebecca Miller.

What’s your connection to the local community?

I’m the VCAL and VET manager at Wyndham Community Education Centre (CEC) and have been working there since 2009, previously as a teacher and co-ordinator.

I was a secondary school teacher for 27 years but le because I was concerned about the number of young people disengaging from school.

At Wyndham CEC we work with 15-22-year-olds through a re-engagement program with government schools in the area. We also work with young people through our pre-VCAL, VCAL and VET programs.

We aim to build students’ self-esteem and con dence as well as their education. We are proud of them because despite facing obstacles in life, such as being a young parent or couch sur ng, they still attend our centre to continue their education and make better lives for themselves.

I volunteer on the youth policy development committee for Wyndham City Council; am on the Wyndham Young People’s Network (committee) giving advice to the sta at the Youth Resource Centre on developing programs and am involved with Werribee Lions Club.

What do you like about Wyndham?

It’s a huge city but a tight-knit community which is supportive of local events and proud to live in Wyndham.

e council is willing to take on new ideas and ventures and cater to residents’ needs. ey’re always approachable and actively involved with young people.

What would you change?

e area needs better public transport, especially for young people getting to school. I’d love a new building for our centre, where we could have other agencies working with us in the same place to help young people in a centralised location.

e centre could do with a mini bus to help kids get out and about.

What’s your favourite eatery or place to get co ee?

Full steam for smiles

It was a toy drive with a di erence. e HMAS Cerberus Navy Steam Club last week delivered more than 1000 toys to Altona North for children who may otherwise not have a present to open this Christmas. Toys were delivered from Victoria Barracks in the club’s 1923 Foden steam wagon –which has a top speed of 40km/h – to the St Vincent de Paul Society distribution centre in support of the Vinnies Christmas Appeal.

Men and women at the HMAS Cerberus navy base raised funds to buy toys with the aim of collecting “1000 toys for 1000 smiles”. Warrant o cer Ian Waller said sailors managed to deliver 1300 toys.

“I’m really proud of all the e orts of the whole Cerberus and the navy community to get behind it,” he said.

“We had a great time and it was certainly well appreciated by St Vincent de Paul, which makes it all worthwhile.”

Australia-wide, the society will help more than 500,000 people or families in need this Christmas.

BUILT on the former Australian Defence Industry ammunitions factory site, works were begun by Lend Lease in 2001 and the development is currently in the final stages of selling its apartments precinct.

Edgewater is an urban renewal development of national significance aimed at setting new benchmarks in urban design excellence, community connection and environmental remediation and reuse.

Located 7 kilometres west of Melbourne CBD, Edgewater covers 95 hectares with an expected 1450 dwellings on completion.

It is situated along 1.5kms of Maribyrnong River frontage with a central seven-hectare Lake

Edgewater holding around 200 million litres of water and offering both private and public harbour moorings.

Almost half (45 hectares) the 95-hectare site is retained as open space including 15 hectares of newly created parks, gardens and wetlands. Edgewater is connected through a regional hike and bike path which features public artworks.

Edgewater Place is a mixed use precinct including shops, cafes, an Aldi supermarket, office space as well as Club Edgewater, a restaurant and accommodation currently in planning. Lend Lease has implemented a number of key initiatives to respond to the significant constraints of the site. THE QUAYS

THE multi-award winning Quays is MAB’s largest project to date, with a construction cost of $190m.

MAB was awarded development rights in 1999 to the North End of Victoria Harbour now known as ‘NewQuay.’

Since this acquisition they have delivered seven high rise residential developments across the precinct with The Quays being the most recently completed project in 2013. The creation of The Quays has been the culmination of several years of master planning and ideas from a range of experts and stakeholders.

This project challenged the status quo in the marketplace and within MAB’s apartment business. Alternatively, it could see a niche in the market for more affordable dwellings, with

LOCATED close to one of Melbourne’s most iconic intersections (Toorak Road and Chapel Street) ILK South Yarra is a 24-storey mixed-use development. ILK has been conceived with ‘place making’, ‘event’, ‘environments’ and ‘craft’ as key concepts. This provides a platform for a diverse community to integrate with and make positive contributions to the Toorak Road precinct.

Each part of the architecture responds to its specific location within the site. The building’s facade and forms complement the surrounding commercial and retail precinct while creating a more textured and detailed setting that alludes to the intimate spaces of ILK. The quality of living that ILK affords is achieved through the considered blend of interior and

exterior spaces; apartments are designed for their sense of sanctuary while shared internal environments foster a sense of community, encouraging interaction and engagement. ILK contains world-class resort inspired amenity across three separate zones: the ground level, Level 3 and Level 9. The key marketing strategy was the creation of an iconic brand for ILK, which was achieved through a sophisticated display suite, and minimal advertising. The aim in constructing ILK was to remove the existing building and cross-over to Toorak Road and develop a new structure to reinstate an active street wall to Toorak Road. The result of two years of extensive planning and rigorous consultation with the local and State Government and the community, not only does this development honour the site’s

iconic history, the former Tip Top bakery site, but also creates a successful project that adds life and value to this emerging, inner city community.

Designed by architecture firm RotheLowman, the site has been transformed into a series of six residential buildings containing a mix of apartments; from interior-designed apartments, townhouses, duplexes and entry-level apartments, to suit a range of owner-occupiers and investors, as well as a high proportion of first home buyers, who took advantage of the generous first home owners grant available at the time.

The interior spaces have been designed with a warm, neutral palette to encourage the resident to inject their own personality into their home. ■

URBAN WETLAND AND CASCADES, CAROLINE SPRINGS

Urban

and Cascades at Caroline Springs is an innovative storm water treatment solution for higher density urban environments that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

When the traditional ‘organic’ shaped wetland didn’t fully meet the objectives of the planning scheme provisions nor the urban vision of the Caroline Springs Town Centre, an alternate approach was sought.

The vision for the Urban Wetland and Cascades was formulated in 2003, with Lend Lease Communities presenting a precedent setting water management system to Melbourne Water Corporation and Melton Shire Council.

A formal contemporary straight-edged, geometric system with wetlands, open water ponds,

sand filters and bio-swales all linked through the pedestrian circulation system and road network was proposed. Detailed modelling determined that it would meet water quality and stormwater objectives. This innovative approach challenged stakeholders as it appeared somewhat foreign, expensive and a maintenance liability.

The Urban Wetland and Cascades has cost $6.1m to construct with $3.1m reimbursed under the Stony Hills Creek Drainage Scheme.

The Urban Wetland and Cascades aims to enhance the urban character of the Caroline Springs town centre and provide open space amenity to support the surrounding mix of high density apartments and townhouses. ■

THE Willow Park project has taken an industrial area and turned it into a new community.

Set on a 57,650 square metre site in the predominantlyindustrialareaofMaidstone, the site itself was occupied for industrial use that was no longer required.

Along Omar Street to the west of the subject site, the land is occupied by single allotments of residential use, with their private open spaces abutting the subject site.

Residential dwellings began to appear in other disused parcels of land in close proximity, but the area was still mainly industrial with several design constraints to overcome.

This included Hampstead Road itself, which is very industrious and carrying heavy vehicular traffic.

Nearby Crefden Street was a new council roadalreadyinplacewhentheinitialdesign stages began – providing a north facing frontage to the development.

The introduction of a new internal road system, a major drainage reserve, open space and a park with wetlands formalised the outline of the stages that were to complementthemultiresidentialprecincts.

From the outset of the development, a conscious approach was adopted to establish a residential development that would evolve in its architectural form and composition over the duration of the development.

This enabled the development to be given a sense of community - via an architectural responseofcontemporarybuiltforms,with various heights and materiality contributing to a skyline that would set a new preferred neighbourhood character. ■

THE significant landscaping within the site provides tree canopies and considerable internal streetscape amenity. Landscaped gardens and pathways connect the residences leading to a 975 sqm central park.

In total, 1,500 square metres of communal green space is provided across two primary landscaped precincts. Sunland Group is to be congratulated on the integration of these beautifully crafted gardens, which frame the living spaces and provides communal open spaces for the community to enjoy. ■

New coach plans to build on historic feat

Phil Pese was an integral part of a Werribee Bears team that made club history by reaching the Victorian Rugby League rst-grade nals for the rst time last season.

e Bears were ultimately le shattered a er a 26-22 loss to the North West Wolves in the dying seconds of the elimination nal, but gained the respect of the competition and put their name well and truly on the map.

When Pese returns next season, it will be as the Bears coach, taking over the reins from Aaron Tiananga.

Pese has seen the Bears take a giant leap forward in the past 12 months and felt it was a time for stability, so he put his hand up for the position.

“I wanted to keep the whole team together,” he told Star Weekly.

“I thought that if we get another coach in, the team could start separating and going elsewhere.

“I really believe in what happened this year

and I’m pretty sure we can replicate it or go better next year.

“ e foundation has been set, the majority of the team from last year were young, but they have experience under their belts now, so, hopefully, we can build from it and get the result we want.”

Pese played at a high level in his native New Zealand.

e 27-year-old full back represented the Auckland Vulcans – the feeder club to the NRLs New Zealand Warriors – in the NSW Cup.

When he arrived in Australia, he played two seasons with Altona Roosters, resulting in a premiershipmedalbeforesealingamovetothe Bears last winter.

Pese is chasing the ultimate prize and wants the Bears players to experience the thrill of winning a premiership.

“Idon’tthinkanyonehaswonagrand nalat WerribeeBears,soIhopetheygetthatfeeling,”

Pese said. “I want them to believe in themselves more, because there were times this year when they second guessed themselves.

“I really believe our team this year could’ve taken it all the way, but they just have to believe they can do it.”

Pese said his rst coaching gig “will be a big challenge”.

He has the extra pressure of going from teammate one year to coach the next.

“At the moment they still look at me like one of the players,” Pese said.

“Next year I will be a bit di erent; they’ll be looking at me as the coach, so I’m trying to break down that barrier.”

Pese has already put some of the Bears throughtheirpacesinpre-Christmasworkouts.

“It was just to get the boys together again, get them into training mode,” he said. “We’ll hit the ground running in the new year.”

Bees sign A-League star

Werribee City has landed former Socceroo and A-League star Simon Colosimo in a National Premier League coup.

Colosimo took part in his rst training session with the Bees on Saturday morning a er committing to the club for 2015. e 35-year-old has played around the world since starting in Carlton’s foundation team in 1997 in the old National Soccer League.

He had a brief stint at Manchester City and stops at Belgium’s Royal Antwerp, Pahang in Malaysia, Turkey’s Sivasspor and Dempo in India.

Colosimo was capped 26 times for Australia and enjoyed an illustrious career in the NSL with Carlton, South Melbourne, Perth Glory and Parramatta Power and later in the A-League with the Glory, Sydney FC and Melbourne Heart.

His love of the game keeps him involved at a grassrootslevelthesedaysandtheAISgraduate had a stint with Goulburn Valley Suns in the NPL last season.

Bees sporting director Giogio Pastorini was impressed with Colosimo’s tness when he reported to his rst training session.

“He was running like a kid,” Pastorini told Star Weekly. “He’s motivated, he likes his soccer and that’s why he’s playing with us.”

Colosimo’s experience in a young and developing Bees team will be invaluable.

He will slot seamlessly into his familiar central defensive role, where he can also be a sure hand bringing the ball out from the back.

“ e team is young and kids can lose their heads on the pitch,” Pastorini said. “He has the mentality and the experience to organise the defence.”

Nino Ragusa returns as coach at the Bees this season.

His assistant, Agim Sherifovski, took the reins on Saturday, while Ragusa tours the facilitiesandgainsknowledgefromthecoaches at Italian Serie A giant SS Lazio, who have an alignment with Werribee City.

e Bees will take their under-14 team to Rome next month to play against Lazio’s juniors and four other teams from Serie B.

e youngsters will also get to see Lazio play Sampdoria and Roma.

Side trips are planned to the colosseum and the Vatican, where they will leave a Werribee City shirt for Pope Francis.

“It will be a holiday and an education at the same time for the kids,” Pastorini said. “All these clubs have very good juniors so it will be good for the kids to play in these games.”

■ I hosted the Bulldogs recruits’ Inside the Kennel show last week. The boys have settled into the club and seem a nice bunch of young men. Tom Boyd is a very mature 19-year-old who speaks with a wise head. The insatiable nature of the media has not kicked in yet, but it will once the serious stuff starts. The Bulldogs are in an interesting position, with a new coach, captain and high-pro le star recruit. It’s uncharted waters for all concerned and it will be fascinating to watch events unfold next year. I’m happy to report that Doug Hawkins is on the mend after his gall bladder was removed last week. He’s in ne spirits and won’t be out of action for long.

■ I’m hearing about a lot of possible player movements at local footy clubs now the AFL draft has been done. Footscray VFL side has Will Beasley and Josh Wallis training at Whitten Oval. The two sons of famous Bulldogs will, we hope, be wearing the red, white and blue next season. At Werribee, Daniel Fraser (ex-Hoppers Crossing and Point Cook) has taken the position of development league coach after Phil O’Keefe stepped aside because of work commitments. Daniel will have Simon Riddoch and Rory Nicol as his assistants. Former Bulldog Stephen Tiller has joined Deer Park along with former Albion spearhead ‘Donnie’ Bloom eld. Spotswood has lost several players but has signed a few. Wyndhamvale Falcons have secured Chris Graham and Paul O’Shea, who will coach as well as play. West stars shine bright

e western suburbs have again proven to be a hot spot for unearthing young sports talent.

is year, 10 athletes were recognised for their outstanding sporting achievements by being nominated for the Don Deeble Rising Star Award.

e award is run by the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club (SWRSC) in conjunction with Star Weekly andrecognisesyoungathletes in the west who have achieved exceptional results at state and national level.

e athletes must also be under 21.

Each month one nominee receives $1000 donated by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club and other prizes to help reach their sporting goals.

Following the 10 monthly nominations, the award’s grand nal will be celebrated in January.

All nominees from the past year are eligible

to win the rst prize of $5000, while two runners-up will each receive $2500.

Sunshine Western Region Sports Club vice-president Barry Watson said he’d been excited by the high calibre of nominees.

“Never would we have thought we’d be getting this many of our sports stars representing their country at such a young age,” he said.

“ e west is certainly a powerful source when it comes to nding sporting prospects at a high level.

“We o en say we have a unique award which is the best of its type in the country. Without the support of the Yarraville Club Cricket Club the award wouldn’t be the same.”

It has also been a big year for past winners of the award.

Previous nominee Dante Exum made his NBA debut for the Utah Jazz, while Morgan

Mitchell competed at this year’s Commonwealth Games in the 400-metre individual and relay events.

“It’s particularly exciting to see these people grow into adults and reach these high standards,” Mr Watson said.

“May it continue.”

It’s o en the little things that make people choose a car. For example, there’s a host of excellent turbo diesel SUVs that go great and provide oily-rag fuel consumption, yet many people are worried about getting dirty hands at the diesel pump.

e latest Path nder is more re ned than its predecessors. Its stylish exterior lines mask its two-tonne bulk and it’s only when you get behind the wheel that you realise how big it is.

But it’s certainly no truck. It’s a pleasant car todrive,withgoodhandlingandacomfortable ride balanced nicely between rm and spongy.

e top-of-the-range Ti Path nder I tested is fullofcreaturecomforts,fromleatherseatswith heating and cooling and multiple adjustments in the front. It’s a true seven-seater, with the back row folding up easily and a middle row, withamiddleseatthatwill tanadultandslide back and forth.

It also puts the images together to make it look as if you’re looking at the car and surrounding obstacles from above. It makes parallel parking a ve-metre beast like this in a tight spot simpler and safer.

e 13-speaker Bose sound system is epic,

though the Bluetooth connection cut out a lot. Of course the Nissan Path nder is also a handy four-wheel-drive, although in my time with it I never got to test it o -road. is is a beautifully appointed luxury family car that’s well worth a look.
