Jobs plan pitch to parties

A bold plan to drive investment and job creation across Melbourne’s west has been presented to both major parties in the lead-up to Saturday’s state election.

A business case, commissioned by the Committee for Wyndham and prepared by analysts MacroPlan Dimasi, includes a detailed pitch for $3 million in funding over three years for an Australian- rst partnershipagencybetweenindustryand government to focus on attracting major developer investment and stimulating job growth in the region.

eblueprintwouldseetheCommittee for Wyndham expand to advocate for investment and jobs across the western suburbs.

A report as part of the business case states that the most critical issue facing the western suburbs is responding to the rapid population growth that has “drastically exceeded” the current supply of jobs, services and supporting infrastructure.

It identi es three key priority areas requiring major investment in the region – health, education, and infrastructure and logistics.

“Melbourne’swesthashistoricallybeen deprived of catalyst projects from which future development can be derived,” the report states. “A failure to actively developmajorprojects, whetherpublicor privately funded, has led to a stagnation in investment and a signi cant lack of jobs growth.

“It is essential that co-ordinated initiatives for job creation and infrastructure develop to ensure that it [the western suburbs] is not simply a region of commuters and empty homes.”

e government’s own planning blueprint, Plan Melbourne, predicts

Melbourne’s future population will be heavily concentrated in the west –spanningthemunicipalitiesofWyndham, Moonee Valley, Maribyrnong, Hobsons Bay, Melton and Brimbank.

Committee for Wyndham chief executiveChrisPotarissaidtheaimofthe planwouldbetoactivelyengageandwork as a conduit between business, investors and government to create opportunities across the west.

With the population of the western suburbs set to grow by 430,000 by 2031, Mr Potaris said this would require the creation of another 125,000 jobs in the region.

“At the moment, in Wyndham, we’re the poor cousin because we can’t access regional funding from bodies such as Regional Development Australia, and we don’treceivethesamehigh-level nancial support from big business as inner metropolitan areas do,” he said.

TarneitMPTimPallas, whoisstanding for the ALP in the new seat of Werribee on Saturday, said a Labor government wouldconsiderthebusinesscaseonmerit before committing to any funding.

Mr Pallas said the East Werribee Employment Precinct was an initiative of the previous Labor government and, if properly managed, would provide great opportunities for job creation.

He said Labor’s jobs plan would set up funds for growth industries and provide payroll tax rebates for businesses that were hiring unemployed young people, the long-term unemployed and retrenched workers.

Western Metropolitan Region Liberal MP Andrew Elsbury said a re-elected Coalition would continue with its plan to create 200,000 jobs across the state.

e Obesity Policy Coalition, which comprises a ra of health groups, has raised concerns about the impact that rising obesity levels are having on the health of Wyndham residents.

Executive manager Jane Martin said the full impact of obesity on rates of chronic diseases, such as cancer and type 2 diabetes, was yet to be fully understood. She said it was important

for residents to eat healthy diets and lead active lives.

Heart Foundation cardiovascular health director Kellie-Ann Jolly said a lack of exercise was putting people at risk of heart disease. “ ere are a lot of ticking time bombs,” she said. “People don’t know they’re at signi cant risk of heart disease.

Public re shelter plan rejected

Despite the extreme threat of grass res across Wyndham this summer, a report has found the city does not need a Neighbourhood Safer Place (NSP), which would provide a last-resort shelter for people in immediate danger.

e report, presented to Wyndham council last Monday night, followed a risk analysis by the Wyndham Municipal Fire Management Planning Committee.

It determined that grass res, rather than bush res, posed the most signi cant threat, and the current mitigation strategies lowered thelikelihoodofthesea ectingthecommunity to the extent which would demand an NSP.

e CFA Act was recently amended to require all councils to consider NSPs, which are designed for use during a bush re and for people whose other plans have failed.

In Wyndham, only Mount Cottrell was identi ed in the report as being at major risk of being impacted by grass res.

e planning committee recommended against introducing an NSP in Wyndham due to the lack of bush re threat in the municipality, the minimal distance to retreat from rural to urban areas and the councilenforced 30-metre rebreak around towns during the re danger period.

It was also considered that introducing an NSP in Wyndham would cause people travelling towards it to gridlock local roads, blocking access for emergency services.

Harrison ward councillor Glenn Goodfellow,aCFAvolunteer, saidthedecision not to introduce an NSP in Wyndham was justi ed.

“ e best thing in the event of a signi cant grass re in Wyndham is to go two streets back; that’s your designated safe place,” he said.

Search is on for schoolmates

ey capture our awkward phases, embarrassing haircuts and clothes, but as we grow older we tend to look back at our school photos with a sense of nostalgia.

With memories in mind, one former Werribee High School (now Werribee Secondary College) student has embarked on an ambitious project to track down the students from the school’s rst 32 years.

Colin Foot arrived from England with his family in 1954 and two years later was among the rst intake at Werribee High, which at that stage was called Werribee Elementaryandintegratedwiththeprimary school in Deutgam Street.

He remembers the rst headmaster of the high school, George Morris, as a man with a “booming voice”. One of his rst teachers was ‘Miss Bevan’, and a Hungarian teacher coached the volleyball team through three undefeated years.

Now, Mr Foot, 71, has developed a website where he has gathered together more than 350 school and class photos from 1956 to 1988 and hopes to nally put names to faces.

“ ey never used to put names on school photos, so it’s been a di cult task,” he said.

Zero tolerance for arsonists

Police will increase their patrols over summer in a bid to reduce the number of deliberately lit grass res.

Last summer police responded to 62 intentionally lit bush or grass res across the state – 19 more than in the summer of 2012-13. is year, police have adopted a “zerotolerance” approach to arson, warning people that deliberately lighting res carries a maximum penalty of 25 years’ jail. e warning comes as Werribee CFA urges residents to prepare for the worst.

In January, a deliberately lit grass re burned more than 113 hectares at Little River.

“It aims to provide young people with an opportunity to face their fears by being challenged to complete adventure-based activities,” she said.

“ ey’ll undertake problem-solving activities that help them in their development and will learn personal and social skills, like leadership, trust, communication and collaboration, that will help them forge their way in the world.

“One of the other bene ts of this program is that it empowers young people by encouraging them to recognise their potential and build their con dence.

“ e activities in this program are also designed to create team-building skills. at, in turn, develops their capacity to not only recognise their own worth but the worth of others.”

Cadillac cruises in for cup win

e Peter Moody-trained Cadillac Mountain stormed home to take out the $80,000 Werribee Cup last ursday.

Expertly ridden by Chad Scho eld, the four-year-old started as the pre-race favourite and duly saluted before a crowd of about 1500 at

Werribee Racecourse. It was the rst time since 2007 that the cup had been held at Werribee in the spring, a er taking place in December the past two years.

Racegoers were divided over the success of the day.

Werribee’s Sue Christo said she felt the event had not been the same since 2008, when it was

held in Geelong before being shelved for three years while the track was redeveloped.

However, her husband Alex said he had enjoyed the day.

One group of spectators who had been attending the cup for 40 years told Star Weekly that the cup race was held too late in the day and that the event “had no atmosphere”.

Another group said it was disappointing there was not a bigger crowd, but vowed they would return next year to support the event. Other highlights included an appearance by three-time Melbourne Cup runner-up Red Cadeaux, who paraded down the main straight prior to the big race, and fashions on the eld added a touch of glamour and style.

Aged care staff ‘undervalued’

Mercy Health has assured families the safety and well-being of residents at its Werribee aged care centre will not be compromised despite nurses and carers taking industrial action over a pay dispute.

Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation (ANMF) members at Mercy aged care sites across Victoria, including Mercy Place Wyndham, have rejected a pay o er from management which the union claims would still result in sta being paid signi cantly less than their colleagues at other aged care facilities.

e union has called for wage increases of 13.25 per cent for nurses and 15 per cent for personal care assistants over four years. Mercy Health has o ered 12.5 per cent for nurses and 14.5 per cent for personal-care assistants.

ANMF secretary Lisa Fitzpatrick said sta at Mercy Place Wyndham held a stop work meeting last Friday and would continue the rolling stoppages until Mercy Health improves

its o er. e union claims that at the end of the last wage agreement, Mercy Health’s personalcare assistants were being paid more than 3 per cent less than standard industry rates.

“Nurses and carers working at Mercy sites across Victoria should be valued for the vital work they do in caring for older Victorians.

ey should not be undervalued and paid below industry standards,” Ms Fitzpatrick said.

Mercy Health executive director of aged care Voula Yankoulas said the current pay o er on the table was “genuine and reasonable”.

“Mercy Health is disappointed that the ANMF has chosen to take industrial action in full knowledge that the proposed action will directly impact our residents,” she said.

“We will continue to work with the ANMF to reach a resolution to this current dispute and will continue to value and support our employees in caring for our residents.

“Mercy Health assures residents and their families that during this period of industrial activity the safety and well-being of residents will remain paramount.”

Residents petition for Williams Landing school

More than 150 people have signed a petition calling for a public school to be built in Williams Landing.

e petition and accompanying letter by the ‘Residents of the Suburb of Williams Landing’ were presented at Wyndham council’s meeting on Monday night. It requests that the council work with the state government and the suburb’s developer Cedar Woods to open a school in the area “as

soon as possible”. According to a study by the petition organisers, the population of Williams Landing has reached about 6000, with up to 1000 children enrolled in childcare or school.

“Currently, most [residents] are forced to seek education and childcare outside the suburb,” the letter states. “Residents … are starting to struggle and worry about where to send their kids for their education –many are even considering moving out.”

e provision of public schools is the state government’s responsibility through the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development. ecouncilwillprepareareport on the government’s plans for the provision of schools across Wyndham.

Cedar Woods Victorian state manager Nathan Blackburne said the developer remained open to the possibility of adding a school to the suburb.

He said its rst proposal to include a school within the development was declined by the state government seven years ago. “We also undertook an expression of interest process for schools within the project, but interest was not su ciently strong,” he said. “Cedar Woods will continue to advocate on behalf of residents … for a range of educational options.”

Backing for ‘ugly duckling’ buses

Wyndham’s bus network will be boosted regardless of which party wins Saturday’s election.

Last week, Labor pledged to ll the missing links in the city’s bus services as part of a $100 million investment in Victoria’s bus networks.

e need for improved bus services in Wyndham has featured heavily on the council’s election wishlist, with Cr Glenn Goodfellow saying the services were critical to the outer suburbs.

e city has the most infrequent and indirect bus services in Melbourne, with many residents living more than 400 metres from a bus stop.

Cr Goodfellow has urged both major parties to spend money on the city’s bus network sooner rather than later.

“Four years from now, Wyndham will have another 12,000 households [and] 40,000 residents,” he said. “Buses, in political terms appear to be the ugly duckling of the transport system.”

Altona MP Jill Hennessy vowed, if her party is elected, to improve the municipality’s bus routes, boost services for people living in Sanctuary Lakes and establish new routes to service the Wyndham Vale and Tarneit Regional Rail Link (RRL) stations.

e changes will be in addition to the proposed services outlined by Public Transport Victoria in its recent network review.

e opposition pledge follows the announcement of a Coalition plan to also deliver new services for the RRL stations and Sanctuary Lakes, and improve train and bus connections on the Werribee line.

Western Metropolitan Liberal MP Bernie Finn said the Coalition’s plan would deliver a high-quality transport service to move more people more o en.

Ms Hennessy said that if Labor was elected, it would consult local communities and councils to establish the new routes and discuss routes that were axed by the state government last year.

The seat of Altona is considered to be among Victoria’s safest.

Roads, education the Altona issues

Education and roads are the key battlegrounds for candidates in the seat of Altona in the lead-up to Saturday’s state election.

Held by the ALP’s Jill Hennessy since 2010 and before that by former Bracks government minister Lynne Kosky, Altona is considered to be among Victoria’s safest seats.

At this election, it covers the areas of Altona, Altona Meadows, Laverton, Point Cook, Seabrook and Seaholme and parts of Altona North and Werribee.

Six candidates will contest Altona, representing the ALP, the Liberal Party, Voice for the West, the Greens and Australian Christians, with one independent.

Star Weekly askedeachtonominatethemost signi cant issues facing residents.

Ms Hennessy said her top priority was providingopportunitiesforlocalpeopletogain the skills they need to get the jobs they want.

Greens candidate Chris De Bono said that with Point Cook’s rapid growth, building schools and investing in health, public transport and the environment were essential.

If elected, Mr De Bono said he would work to address the school maintenance backlog, lobby to re-direct the funding earmarked for East-West Link into public transport and campaign to x hospitals across the west.

Voice of the West’s Jemal Hiabu said transport and other services had failed to keep pace with the region’s population growth.

Independent Brijender Nain said Point Cook’s growth should be stopped until public transport to the area was improved.

LiberalcandidateNihalSamaraandAnthony O’Neill from Australian Christians failed to respond before deadline.

No cash for justice precinct plan

A proposed integrated justice precinct in Wyndham remains on track despite the state government rejecting a funding application for a project to help guide the development of a masterplan.

Four-hectares of land directly behind Werribee police station have been set aside by the Metropolitan Planning Authority for an East Werribee justice precinct, which would include a court house, police station, Legal Aid centre and other key service agencies.

Sisters unite for

Wyndham’s soaring population, high teenage pregnancy rates and rising domestic violence reports have prompted a Sydney-based charity to expand to the municipality.

e Life Changing Experiences Foundation will bring its SISTER2Sister program to Melbourne from next year, a er receiving a $30,000 grant from Jetstar’s Flying Start grassroots funding program.

e money will allow the foundation, which has been running in Sydney for 10 years, to kick-start its national expansion, beginning with Wyndham.

SISTER2Sister helps girls from backgrounds ofabuse, neglect, domesticviolenceandpoverty who are in need of leadership and guidance by providing them with a mentor.

Chief executive Jessica Brown said there was a strong need for the program in Melbourne, where there was already a waiting list of girls who have been nominated by community services to take part.

e year-long program is designed to break the cycle of inter-generational social issues.

Ms Brown said many of the girls who took part in the program were facing homelessness or police custody, while just under half had attempted suicide or self-harm or were battling depression.

e participants are referred to the program by police, schools, youth services and their families.

“Big sisters guide the girls and helpthem pick the pieces up and set goals,” Ms Brown said.

“It’s also a risk management program. We dig deep to give [the girls] the tools they need to be able to deal with a crisis and help build their self-con dence. We also run activities for them so they can have fun. Many of the girls in

the program have adult responsibilities. Many are caring for parents or siblings, or they had to grow up way too early. We provide them with activities to help them forget about their responsibilities for a while.”

Ms Brown said the program was being rolled out in Wyndham because the city had a growing youth population in need of help. Since its foundation in 2003, the program has helped 375 at-risk girls in New South

Don’t take risks: police

Police are warning drivers who are doing the wrong thing that they will be caught – as was a Tarneit man who was nabbed drink driving just minutes a er police set up a roadside breath test outside Wyndham North police station last week.

Station sta and highway patrol o cers set up the random breath tests on Sayers Road on November19,testing132driversin40minutes.

e fourth driver tested was a Tarneit man, 53, who returned a blood alcohol reading of .063. He was ned $430 and incurred 10 demerit points.

SergeantGraemeCrouchsaidthe neshould serve as a warning to other drivers.

“If you drive anywhere, any time and are under the in uence of drugs or alcohol, it is only a matter of time before you are caught.”

Sergeant Crouch said Wyndham North police would continue to run random breath tests in Tarneit over the next two weeks as part of Operation RAID.

e statewide operation, which runs until December 7, aims to remove drug and alcohol impaired drivers from the road.

Road users can expect to be breath-tested, drug-tested and speed-checked during the operation.

Wyndham is on a list of 15 high-priority areas identi ed by police based on alcohol and drug-related road trauma levels.

Wyndham Highway Patrol Acting Sergeant Darin Sheahan reminded drivers not to take risks with drugs and alcohol and to stay alert when driving.

“Fatigue is a major concern over the holiday period because many people drive long distances, so we’ll be closely monitoring our major highways,” he said.

e 40-year-old driver is expected to be charged on summons with numerous speed-related o ences and failing to display front number plates.

Police will saturate Wyndham’s roads until January as part of a statewide road safety blitz, with drivers warned they could be caught “anywhere at any time”.

e Summer Stay campaign was launched last week and will run until January 4 in a bid to reduce road trauma over the high-risk holiday season.

Superintendent Neville Taylor says police will check speeds and conduct random drug and alcohol testing around the clock.

“We will be using all available resources to ensure as many people as possible stay safe and stay alive during the festive season,” he said.

Urgent funding required to address Wyndham’s health needs

To the editor

The critical need for funding at Werribee Mercy Hospital will become more crucial as each month passes. The population of Wyndham is growing every day and with each person that chooses to make Melbourne’s south west their home, more pressure mounts on an already stretched hospital. It is important to note that the number of people living in the region is expected to increase by more than 114 per cent to 384,000 over the next 20 years.

The hospital has recently received State and Federal Government funding, which has provided geriatric and rehabilitation services and will deliver a new mental health inpatient facility. Both of these initiatives are welcomed and needed, however, neither address the significant shortfalls in access to critical health services that Melbourne’s south west encounters. Without services such as critical care, high dependency and a range of inpatient beds, some residents are forced to use services, which will be at least 37km away.

This shortfall is also forcing the hospital to transfer up to 90 patients each month as its current infrastructure is unable to provide the level of care required. In fact, current funding allows the hospital the ability to provide care to 40.6 per cent of Wyndham residents – leaving 59.4 per cent to seek care elsewhere.

These figures are difficult to argue with and highlight that the Wyndham community faces some of the poorest access to health services in metropolitan Melbourne. Whilst any funding to the western region will help, it must also be noted that funding neighbouring health services in Footscray, Sunshine, Bacchus Marsh or Geelong will not address these issues.

Werribee Mercy Hospital works closely with its neighbouring health services and is committed to building partnerships which ensure the most efficient and effective delivery of care within the western region. However, while some services can and should be provided offsite, others should not – and the community should not accept anything less.

Despite difficulties in serving the needs of its community, Werribee Mercy Hospital is still a valued part of the fabric of Wyndham. A recent survey found 95 per cent of its patients would recommend the hospital to their family and friends.

Whilst there is no greater recommendation a hospital can receive, the hospital is still failing many due to the limitations imposed on it by a lack of a necessary and reasonable State public funding commitment. For the residents of Wyndham to continue to trust that their local hospital can provide the services they desperately need, the community needs a commitment of $85 million from both Premier Denis Napthine and Opposition Leader Daniel Andrews.

This funding will deliver the next stage of Werribee Mercy Hospital’s Master Plan, which will include eight critical care beds, six operating theatres, 56 inpatient beds and a Central Sterile Supply Department.

Mercy Health and the Wyndham community are calling on both major political parties to allocate funds where they are most needed. The Wyndham community will continue to grow in the days, years and decades to come and without an investment now, it will remain disadvantaged and the hospital will forever be playing catch up.

Yours sincerely

Dear Resident

You may have seen in last week’s Wyndham Star Weekly that Werribee South residents are having trouble with their parcel delivery services with Australia Post.

Residents should not be expected to travel 20km, which on public transport could mean a round trip on 3 hours, to pick up a parcel from the postal centre in Hoppers Crossing.

I am keen to ensure our community is well served by government services. Please touch base with my office if you have any similar Australia Post service issues.

I have called on the Government to resume parcel delivery services to WerribeeSouth.AsaninterimmeasureIwillalsolobbyfortheinstallation of a parcel locker service in Werribee South.

Again don’t hesitate to contact my office if you have any Federal issues. Yours sincerely

MY WYNDHAM

What’s your connection to the local community?

I live in Manor Lakes with my family and have been here for 10 years. Prior to that I lived in Werribee from age 5.

I’m captain of Wyndham Vale CFA and have been since July, but I’ve been involved with the brigade from its conception in 2011. It’s a completely volunteer-run brigade with about 41 operational members and about eight support crew. We train every Tuesday morning. My involvement with the CFA started as a hobby because I like being engaged with the community. I’ve made great friendships and learned a lot through di erent experiences.

I’m also a paramedic and have been since 2001. I started my career in Wyndham and am now part of the operational logistics department managing the operational equipment statewide.

What do you like about your neighbourhood?

It’s a great place to live. ere’s lots of development and growth providing many opportunities. Within the CFA particularly, we enjoy having an input into what goes on in the area and helping shape our community.

Wyndham has kept a bit of its country feel while becoming a bigger city.

Whatwouldyouchange?

ere’s a lack of funding for the CFA and Ambulance Victoria, which should be increased.

We need better facilities and appliances such as a pumper [truck] for Wyndham Vale – like the ones Werribee and Hoppers Crossing CFAs have.

On any warm day the shady foreshore lawns are packed with people of varied ages and cultural demographics, yet the beach itself is big enough to nd your own place on the sand.

I must confess to preferring the proverbial long walks by the sea to lying on the beach, and there’s no shortage of those here, whether in the form of a stroll along the promenade or a more energetic hike to neighbouring beaches along the famous Bondi to Coogee Walk. is

A medium-grade walk with some steep gradients and steps, it’s doable for most tness levels, though if you need a breather there are plenty of places to stop, from benches and beaches to bars and cafes. Away from the water, Coogee has a host of bars, cafes and restaurants ranging from the big and boisterous Coogee Bay Hotel to hip little joints o the main drag.

I look forward to having brunch there some day, though there are plenty of options including Ms Yon’s original establishment Le Petite Café and e Little Kitchen, a cute place with nice big rustic benches and a full view of the galley that gives this place its name.

As well as great co ee, they do nice breakfast fare with a good balance of fancy and healthy options and the ever popular bacon and eggs. It is also open for lunch and dinner.

For pub grub we tried out Five O’s, which servesupdecentnoshatbargainprices, making

It’s a good place for a drink if you prefer something quieter than the Coogee Bay or Coogee Sands hotels, with a decent range of beers and wines. You have to order food to have a drink here; a bowl of chips does the trick. Accommodation options abound in Coogee.

In the mid range is the Dive Hotel, which fortunately doesn’t live up to its name.

ON AN UPWARD SPIRAL

For months now I’ve been wondering what all the fuss is about zucchini spaghetti. People who’ve tried it tell me it’s a lighter, fresher alternative to pasta, regardless of whether you’re trying to cut your carb or wheat intake.

As reported recently in The Age, the zucchini pasta served at Heal.Thyself in Yarraville is one of the raw food cafe’s biggest sellers.

So the other day – while I was doing laps of my favourite homewares store – I decided to buy myself a vegetable spiraliser. There are quite a few brands and sizes on the market to choose from, but my nifty little gadget set me back less than $40. Basically, you impale your chosen vegetable on a little bed of spikes and the spiraliser does the rest, pushing it through the special blades so it comes out the other end in long, curly strands – remarkably like … well … spaghetti.

Some people prefer it raw, but I seared mine for a few seconds in a hot frypan with a little olive oil rst (I don’t recommend blanching it in boiling water, as quite a bit of liquid tends to leech out of it, making it more like zucchini soup). Removing the zucchini spaghetti, I added some chopped garlic and chilli akes to the same pan, sliced button mushrooms, cherry tomatoes and asparagus, then tossed this through the “spaghetti” with some canned tuna, crumbled feta, lemon juice, sea salt and a splash of lemon-infused extra virgin olive oil. Though the texture of the spaghetti is certainly different, it looked great and tasted delicious. You can use other vegies, and while the idea of carrot spaghetti doesn’t thrill me, I might try sweet potato or beetroot next. Try your vegie pasta out on the kids with a big dollop of their favourite bolognaise sauce. Give the world the silent treatment

Almost always when you see pilots on television or in the movies, they’re wearing green headphones with a DC logo and I’ve never seen these in the shops. A mate of mine ies Airbuses and, while they’re a whole lot quieter than the Cessnas he used to y in and out of the mountains of PNG, he still needs noise-cancelling headphones. He seemed like the guy to ask about them. It turns out they’re made by the David Clark Company, which specialises in headphones and headsets for aviation, aerospace, military and industry. You’d think they’d have to be about as good as it gets. Not so, according to the man who ies for a living. e pair he bought cost twice as much as Bose noise cancellers and, he said, weren’t a patch on them. Maybe that’s why I noticed, in coverage of the search for ight MH370, that while the pilots were using DCs, the crew up the back were wearing Bose.

Bose has just put out a new set of noise cancellers – it calls them QuietComfort 25 –that present several improvements on the old ones. I speak from experience here – I’ve been using Bose noise cancellers pretty much since they were released to the public.

e most noticeable improvements are in the packaging. e new carry pack is a bit fatter but has much less width. is is because the headphones fold and pivot to squeeze into a tighter space. In an unused corner there’s a holder for a spare battery and the plug that connects with the in- ight audio system; these critters are easily lost and surprisingly expensive – again I speak from experience.

‘‘ The crew up the back were wearing Bose ’’

One of the most endearing things about the Bose is that the cord can be removed entirely, which is handy when you want to go to an aircra bathroom or take a nap, maintaining noise cancelling without waking up being strangled by a cord. You’ll want to maintain noise cancelling because when you take the headphones o , the cabin noise hits you so hard you wonder how all those other poor sods can stand it.

e QC25s are powered by a single AAA battery, good for 35 hours, or you can pay an extra $50 for the QC3s with a rechargeable lithium. When the battery runs out you can still listen but you lose noise cancelling. e QC25s are still so comfortable you can wear them solidly from Melbourne to Los Angeles, and they sound terri c, with superb de nition and surprisingly strong bass. ese new ones are compatible with most phones, including Windows models.

However they don’t have Bluetooth. If you want that, try Sony’s MDR-ZX750BN ($279), with a battery life of about 13 hours using Bluetooth and 24 without it.

CROSSING 8 Casley Place, 3029

Charm is an elusive quality and a description loosely bandied about in the property market, but this Federation-inspired house in Ashley Gardens estate embodies the true meaning.

“Tintinara” transcends the average faux-Fed because, while not slavishly replicating the era’s style, it has an innate graciousness that harks back to earlier times.

Leadlight panes, dado panels and archway fretwork in natural Tasmanian oak, ceiling rosettes, box bay windows, brass light switches and stepped cornices are brought into sharper focus by the oral Axminster carpet laid in the more formal areas. Cornice strips are painted in a soft green, picking up the carpet’s

main colour, and this simple facet brings everything together to deliver a true harmony.

This attention to interior detail (and quality) is evident throughout. And the back garden marries beautifully with the house; more about that later.

Facing a large park, the house has four bedrooms, the main off the entry hall; it has a walk-in robe and an ensuite with Tassy oak vanity unit and a soft-lilac colour scheme. Another bedroom, through double doors, is next door but would make a ne TV snug. Two more are down a back hallway (lined with four closets), as are the main bathroom with Tassy oak vanity unit and subway tiling, and the laundry with three closets and a workbench.

The lounge-dining room at the front is a picture of elegance, with its box bay window dressed in Austrian blinds (appearing in many rooms) and a cast-iron gas log re set within a period-style timber surround.

The living hub at the back has a tiled kitchen-meals zone, and a carpeted family section with a lovely leadlight door to the side verandah. The kitchen is all today, with stacks of Tassy oak cabinetry, two-door pantry, appliance cupboard and stainless-steel appliances, including a dishwasher.

The huge gabled pergola above terracotta tiles is a year-round cracker, enclosed on three sides and the other sheltered by bistro blinds. Terracotta-tiled

walkways head from here to a pretty wooden arbour covered with yellow roses, and to an arched wooden bridge over a river-stone waterway. A spreading Manchurian pear and a giant moptop couple with box hedging, cottage underplanting and sandstone-edged beds to create a truly magical garden.

A garden shed and coloured-concrete utility area are screened behind a high picket fence, keeping the garden haven aesthetic intact.

Ducted heating and cooling, an alarm, surround-sound (in family room) and a remote-controlled double garage with back roller door are other attractions.

On the Otago trail

Mention Central Otago and one wine springs to mind: pinot noir. Established in the late 1990s, Central Otago is New Zealand’s youngest wine region and its rise has been nothing short ofmiraculous.Nowfamousforitspinotnoir, the region’s pioneers had other grapes in mind when they rst established vineyards.

“In the early days of Central Otago we had vineyards with cabernet sauvignon, syrah, gewürtztraminer, sauvignon blanc and chenin blanc,” says Blair Walter, who made his rst Central Otago wine with Felton Road in 1997.

‘‘ It loves a cool climate to ourish ’’

“It’s gone from a smorgasbord to being 70 per cent pinot noir, then pinot gris and riesling. ere’s a small amount of chardonnay and sauvignon blanc these days.”

Central Otago has risen to become the third-largest wine-growing region in New Zealand – Marlborough is the biggest by far, with about 23,000 hectares planted to vines, followed by Hawkes Bay (4500 hectares) and Central Otago with 2000 hectares. e main reason pinot noir has risen to the top is Central Otago’s climate. Sitting on the 45th parallel, Central Otago shares a latitude with other revered winemaking regions –Bordeaux, Oregon’s Willamette Valley and Italy’s Piedmont in the northern hemisphere.

Regional Styles

From the Gibbston Valley to Lowburn, Felton Road’s Blair Walter has the low-down on the different styles of pinot noir across the region.

There are four distinct sub-regions: Gibbston, Alexandra, Wanaka and the Cromwell basin, which includes Bannockburn, Lowburn, Pisa and Bendigo and accounts for 70 per cent of the production in Central Otago.

“Gibbston has a higher elevation and cooler sites, so there’s more earthier, briar, green-tinged cooler-climate styles,” says Walter.

“Bannockburn and Bendigo, being a bit warmer, tend to be a bit eshier and more densely structured, and Alexandra, being a little bit cooler, produces slightly lighter, more elegant wines.

“Wanaka’s a little hard to characterise because there aren’t many wineries. But because of its westerly location and slightly higher elevation it’s a little more like Gibbston, with darker shades.”

Motoring

“It’s a very dry climate, which is important to pinot noir because it has thin skins and is prone to disease and rotting when wet. But it loves a cool climate to ourish and have typical pinot characters, or pinosity,” says Walter.

Because of New Zealand’s smaller land mass, Central Otago is cooler than its northern hemisphere cousins, making it perfect for pinot noir.

“What makes it work for us is the protection from the Southern Alps, rising from the ocean up to 3000 metres just to the west of us.

“On the western side of the Alps you’ve got one of the wettest spots on the planet, with 7-10 metres of rain a year and we’re just 80 kilometres to the east of there and we only

record 350 millimetres a year.

“If you’re growing pinot noir in a warmer climate, they tend to be lighter-bodied with red cherry and red raspberry, lighter-style wines. Here the warm days and really cold nights help seal in dark fruits and you’re getting real pinot noir characters.”

Tigers in Roo makeover

Werribee Football Club will become the fully aligned VFL partner of AFL club North Melbourne from 2016 for at least two seasons.

e Tigers and fellow VFL club North Ballarat currently have an agreement with the KangaroosthatsplitstheRoos’playersbetween both VFL clubs.

at contract will end at the conclusion of the 2015 season.

From 2016, Werribee will take over as the fully aligned partner, meaning all players who are not in the Kangaroos’ best team will lter down to the VFL Tigers. Werribee will retain its name, nickname, colours and song, preserving 50 years of history.

Tigers president John Nicol said one of the biggest decisions in the club’s history came a er “exhaustive” talks between the two clubs and extensive research by the Werribee board and sta . “In the end, the nancial and football future of the club saw this as our best option for the 2016 and 2017 seasons.”

John Lamont will stay on as senior coach until at least the end of the 2017 season, as will football manager Stuart Balloch.

Lamont was a development and line coach at North Melbourne before accepting the head coaching position at Werribee at the start of last season.

“ e relationship between the two clubs is very strong, very healthy and has produced good results,” he said.

“Werribee has developed players like Ben Brown and Luke McDonald who North has dra ed, and we’ve seen North-listed players likeMasonWood(29games)andDanielCurrie (30) hone their skills playing for Werribee, all to the bene t of the North Melbourne Football Club.

“We have also seen Ben Ross, Ben Warren and Ben Speight choose to continue their football at Werribee a er being delisted by the Kangaroos.”

North Melbourne football director Geo Walsh said the agreement would enhance both clubs’ football programs and lead to the Kangaroos having a greater presence in the City of Wyndham.

“Both Werribee and North Melbourne will bene t greatly from the full alignment,” Walsh said.

“We are sure that not only will this decision enhance the football programs of both clubs, but the joint approach will further imprint our game in the western region.

“ e full alignment will see the North Melbourne Football Club and its players become even more present in the City of Wyndham, adding to the community programs and initiatives already run by the two clubs.”

In-form O’Brien sends bowlers a warning

Bowlers beware. Star Werribee batsman Tim O’Brien is hitting his straps in the run-up to Christmas.

O’Brien blasted a magni cent 127 in the Tigers’ massive 6-341 against Preston in the Victorian Sub-District match at Preston City Oval on Saturday.

A er a relatively slow start to the season with 25, 1 and 20 in his rst three digs, O’Brien has made 48 not out and a century in his last two outings to signal that he’s back to his best form.

Lastsummer,theNo.4 batsmanaccumulated 525 runs, including two tons, at 52, while the season before he made 739 at 73 to be one of the cornerstones of a side that went all the way to the grand nal.

If the Tigers want to make waves in this competition, they’ll need O’Brien at his best, and he’s starting to get into his groove.

It took a team e ort from the Tigers to compilewhatshouldbeamatch-winningscore.

Opener Matt Dean continued his sizzling start with 72.

Contributions came from middle-order batsmen James Freeman (40no), Heath Pritchard (33no) and captain Shaun Dean (26).

e Tigers are preparing for a busy weekend, with the second day of the clash with Preston on Saturday, followed by their rst ‘Movember’ charity Twenty20 game against Hoppers Crossing.

November is when men grow moustaches to raise awareness of men’s health issues, including encouraging regular medical checks, early cancer detection and adopting a healthier lifestyle.

Werribee and Hoppers Crossing plan to make it an annual event with the home venues alternating.

e inaugural contest will take place at Werribee’s Chirnside Park on Sunday, with an under-21 game at 11am followed by the Movember Challenge at 2pm.

ere will be a barbecue and ra e, with all proceeds going to the Movember Foundation.

Hoppers Crossing president Greg Mitchell told Star Weekly there would be one rule for the players who run out on Sunday.

“In the main game, it’s a requirement that

you grow a mo, whether it’s good or bad,” he said.

“It might be a bit hard to grow a mo for some of the under-21s, though.

“In the past few years the club has had members participate in Movember and do some fundraising, and I think it’s a great idea.”

Hoppers Crossing (8-236 dec) has barged its way into the VTCA senior division top ve with a stunning outright win over Tullamarine (132 and 52) at Hogans Road Reserve.

Skipper Greg Kennedy was chief destroyer for the Cats, with a haul of nine wickets for the match.

IN THE DOGHOUSE

■ The Werribee Football Club will have full alignment with the North Melbourne Kangaroos from the 2016 season. What does this mean for the club, the players and supporters? The club will retain its home ground, colours, nickname and theme song. There will be 23 blokes in Tiger jumpers running on to the ground each weekend – that won’t change. And the fact that 12 or more may be Kangaroo-listed players won’t be a game changer. There will still be opportunities for non-North players to play for the club if they’re good enough. North Melbourne is not taking over the Tigers – it will supply players and other personnel. Werribee is facing a very challenging 2016 season. The proposed redevelopment of Avalon Airport Oval means nding an alternative training venue and home ground for a year. Arden Street may be the saviour. Werribee has done well with the partial alignment, making four nals appearances. But when you look at Footscray, Box Hill and Geelong, the talent gap is widening. I am keen to hear from Tigers fans about this. Yes, I work for the club as media manager. And personally, I think this will be good for the long-term future of the Tigers.

■ My memories of Luke Beveridge at the early ’90s Bulldogs are of a tough, hard-at-it player and a nice bloke off the eld. His appointment last week as senior coach of the Bulldogs was done well, and Luke handled the situation with aplomb. Especially when a ‘journo’ asked one of the stupidest questions of all time. Check out the website as I refuse to repeat it. The smartest move he made all week was to appoint Bobby Murphy as skipper for 2015. These two appointments will allow the Bulldogs to concentrate on what’s important – a good preseason and a positive start to 2015.

■ Sport in the west lost two of its elder statesmen last week. Grand United Cricket Club is mourning the passing of Ken ‘Lofty’ Pearce. Ken was named captain of Grand United’s team of the century and had a very good career as a district cricketer for North Melbourne. The Bulldogs lost a beauty with the passing of Ben Bradley. What a man. Ben was an integral part of the change rooms for more years than most of us can remember. Much is made of on- eld greats. Ben Bradley was one of the greats off the eld.

Jets prospects at high altitude

Gun mid elder Jayden Laverde will be “hot property” at ursday night’s AFL national dra , according to Western Jets coach Torin Baker.

Laverde is tipped to become the top player to be handpicked from the Jets’ stable and might go as high as the top ve on a night that could see a record number of players selected from the club in the TAC Cup’s modern con gurations.

e Jets’ single-year record was 10 (in 1994), but that came at a time when they had ownership of the Calder region and when AFL clubs had bigger lists and were less likely to pass on choices later in the dra .

Since the 1995 introduction of the Calder Cannons, which turned the Jets region into one ofthesmallestintheeliteunder-18competition, the club’s best e ort at the dra table came in 1997 with four players chosen.

“In the early years when there weren’t as many teams, we got quite a lot dra ed … every TAC Cup team was getting eight or nine dra ed,” Baker said.

“Since the competition has expanded to 12 teams, the most we’ve had is four in a year.

“ e AFL lists were a bit bigger then … now it’s generally only 60 picks taken.”

e Jets are bracing for a major haul at this year’s dra with at least six players in the mix.

e locks are a trio of exciting mid elders in the form of Laverde, Liam Duggan and Corey Ellis.

ere is a strong feeling that speedster Connor Menadue and rebounding half-back Dillon Viojo-Rainbow will be taken in the middle rounds.

e late-round surprise could be swingman Brenton Payne.

“ ere’s certainly been a lot of phantom dra s that have suggested we’ll have a number of players picked,” Baker said.

“Whether that works out to be four, ve or six, that’s where it could be, but we’d obviously like as many as possible.

“It’s looking like we have six boys in genuine contention.

“To get what we’re talking about, in that range, would be really good for our club, that’s for sure.”

ere have been inquiries made from AFL recruiters about the progress of Billy Myers and Liam Carter.

Myers has already signed a VFL contract with Williamstown but may be a rookie dra target.

e lightly built onballer might be a speculative pick in the rookie dra .

e AFL national dra takes place at the Gold Coast Convention Centre on ursday night with the AFL rookie dra to be held six days later.

Jayden Laverde

Age: 18

Height/weight: 189cm/82kg

Positions: Onballer/wingman/ half-forward

Local club: Keilor

Jayden Laverde is the alpha dog of the Western Jets’ class of 2014. The hype surrounding the star mid elder has left others dwarfed in comparison. The biggest reason is his stature, with taller mid elders in vogue in recent drafts.

“The 190-centimetre mid elder is becoming a really attractive asset in any football club,” said Jets coach Torin Baker. “Jayden’s got the versatility, he’s got the athleticism, he’s got the football smarts and he’s a great character.” Laverde is as close to the full package as it gets for a teenager.

He alerted the clubs to his talents while playing for Vic Metro at the national championships and claiming All-Australian honours.

Liam Duggan

Age: 17

Height/weight: 184cm/76kg

Positions: Inside-outside mid elder/ defender

Local club: Bacchus Marsh

Liam Duggan has been earmarked as a rst-round selection – at just 17 years of age. Despite being one of the youngest players at the draft, he’s undoubtedly one of the most mature.

A member of the AIS-AFL Academy, Duggan was the recipient of the Ben Mitchell Medal – awarded to the academy player who most embodies the qualities of courage, commitment, trust and leadership.

Connor Menadue has an exciting mix of speed and endurance

Duggan’s main attributes point to him becoming an elite mid elder, both inside and outside the packs. He thrives on the contested ball, works hard in a defensive capacity and has elite kicking skills.

Corey Ellis

Age: 18

Height/weight: 185cm/76kg

Positions: Mid elder/half-back

Local club: Keilor

Corey Ellis turned heads at the Western Jets from the moment he set foot in the club.

“From day one, when he came into the program, the way he used the footy was a real standout in our club and in the competition,” Baker said.

Ellis is one who lets his football do the talking. He will develop into a mid elder in the longer long term but is also adept at a set-up role from defence thanks to his elite kicking skills. He also pinch-hit as a forward at times for the Jets.

Ellis is unlikely to hit the ground running at the start of preseason due to a lingering foot injury. Baker said the recruiters would be foolish to let a short-term injury change their assessment of Ellis.

Connor Menadue

Age: 18

Height/weight: 188cm/69kg

Positions: Onballer/half-back/half-forward

Local club: Spotswood

Connor Menadue is an intriguing prospect because of his unique skill set. Few others boast the lethal mix of speed and endurance that showed up in testing at the draft combine. He tested third in the 20-metre sprint and sixth in both the repeat sprint and three-kilometre time trial. Baker is reluctant to compare his Jets players with pros already in the AFL system, but he couldn’t help himself in Menadue’s case.

“He doesn’t just test quick, he uses it on the football eld,” Baker said.

“A lot have one or the other [speed or endurance] and some players are quite adept in both areas, but he’s elite in both categories and that makes him exciting.

“If you look at a Brad Hill or an Isaac Smith and the impact they’ve had on the AFL, I would say that Connor has similar running ability to those two guys.” Menadue is the run-and-carry king at the Jets.

Dillon Viojo-Rainbow

Age: 18

Height/weight: 185cm/80kg

Positions: Rebounding defender/inside mid elder/wingman

Local club: Hoppers Crossing

Dillon Viojo-Rainbow lives, breathes and eats football.

“When footy is such a full-on environment, you’ve really got to want it at AFL level,” Baker said.

“I certainly think Dillon’s right up there in terms of kids who have come through the program.”

Viojo-Rainbow has translated his obsession with footy to the eld by carving out an eye-catching TAC Cup career.

The lasting memories of his time at the Jets will be of his reading of the play to intercept marks under pressure and his ability to turn defence into attack in the blink of an eye with his precise foot skills.

Brenton Payne

Age: 18

Height/weight: 193cm/76kg

Positions: Key forward/key defender

Local club: Bacchus Marsh

Brenton Payne was a late bloomer in the TAC Cup and not on the recruiters’ radar in his bottom-age year at the Jets.

The key position swingman certainly made up for it this season, earning Vic Metro honours.

Payne is explosive on the lead and has the ability to mark the ball with one grab. He’s also a good nisher from set shots and has proven ability to kick goals from long range.

Payne was the leading goalkicker for Vic Metro, for which he held down a key forward role.

Jets groomed for the top ight

WesternJetsregionmanagerShaneSextonsays

AFL dra night marks the end of a ve-year transformation – from local footballers to full-time professionals – for the lucky players selected.

e Jets have four dedicated scouts and a coaching network to discover talented players within the Western Region Football League and clubs that are under their umbrella in the Essendon, Riddell and Ballarat leagues.

Hype surrounding a player might only start once he reaches the under-18 TAC Cup, but the Jets’ hard work behind the scenes starts much earlier and with little fanfare.

“We start trying to identify players when the kids are 14,” Sexton said.

e Jets’ scouting network has been awless in Sexton’s time at the club.

No player is yet to land on an AFL list from any region the Jets overlooked.

“ is is one of the things we pride ourselves on,” Sexton said. “All I can do is go on my time here … there’s not one player who has got through to AFL footy that we didn’t know about,” Sexton said.

“Our coverage is really good – it needs to be to be able to identify the best athletes.”

So what do the Jets look for in a 14-year-old? Most have not developed physically by that age; some are yet to make their mind up about their chosen sport and it’s an important time in their schooling.

It’s simple – the Jets just want to see a player with sound fundamentals for their age.

“At that age level, we’re just looking for kids who can play football,” Sexton said.

e rst year in the Jets system is the calm before the storm, so to speak.

A player gets familiar with the club and the

club gets to build a pro le of the individual. e expectations ramp up for the 15 year olds, with a greater emphasis on skill acquisition and tness programs involving running and body weights.

e 16 year olds have a total weights program attached to their training as their athletes’ bodies start to take shape.

isisaperiodinwhichaplayercanpressfor state championship squads and higher honours with state sides.

“Once they progress to those levels, you’re talking about playing against the best teams, the best individuals around the state,” Sexton said. “It’s not just a matter of running out and getting a kick – you’re going to have to earn a kick.”

AFL recruiters begin to form opinions about players at this age level.

e TAC Cup year is when players are thrust into the spotlight, with their every move – on and o the eld – monitored by AFL scouts.

e top priority for a player is to play good football for the Jets and do it within the team concept. ey may be played out of position to see if they can add another string to their bow.

Elite youngsters go on to represent Vic Metro at the national championships, getting the chance to play at AFL venues and in front of national television audiences in what can be a sink or swim assessment of their future.

Once the TAC Cup has concluded, it is no holiday for players or sta , with further coaching and personal training required to keep players sharp for the dra combine or state screening.

“ e recruiters have made up their minds whether they’ve got the skills, whether they can get a kick, whether they’re inside or outside, small or tall, mid elder or anker – they can see all that,” Sexton said.

e last port of call on the road to the dra is meetings with AFL club personnel and assessments by AFL medical sta .

Year 12 students have a curfew around the school exam period so they are not distracted from their studies.

Ten days out from the dra , the Jets give their players a well-earned break, during which they can re ect on their junior career – with the odd sleepless night thrown in, given the dra on the horizon.

“My view is the kids are entitled to a little bit of peace from the whole thing if they can, but they’re going to be thinking about it every day, obviously,” Sexton said.

ursday night might seem the end of the roadforthosewhomissout, butthereisasecond chance six days later with the AFL rookie dra . ere’s also the unconventional route to the big league through the VFL, while some players will just be happy to go back and play with their mates at their local club.
