House prices buck trend

House prices in Werribee and Point Cook movedagainstastatewidetrendtoriseby9per cent between June and September.

Latest gures from the Real Estate Institute of Victoria show house prices remained stable across Victoria in the September quarter. But the median price in Werribee rose from $306,500 in June to $335,000 in September, while Point Cook’s median price reached $498,000, up from $457,000.

Harcourts senior sales partner Michelle

Chick said Werribee and Point Cook were popularwithbuyersbecauseoftheirproximity to the city.

And prices in Point Cook were higher than most other suburbs in Wyndham because it was perceived as a “prestigious suburb”.

“A lot of purchasers look at Point Cook because it’s a few kilometres closer to the CBD than Werribee or Wyndham Vale,” Ms Chick said. “You pay so much more for a similar distance out in the eastern suburbs.”

Ms Chick said buyers were interested in Werribee because they believed they were

getting more value for their money than in other Wyndham suburbs, such as Hoppers Crossing.

Overall, Ms Chick said Wyndham’s real estate market was strong, with houses sold in seven to 21 days if reasonably priced.

She said the municipality was attractive to buyers because it had a lot to o er.

In Hoppers Crossing, the median house price dropped by about one per cent, from $342,000 to $339,000, while Truganina fell two per cent from about $366,000 to $359,000.

Wyndham Vale’s media price remained stable at $330,000.

Tarneit recorded a two per cent increase to $408,000 and Williams Landing went up four per cent from $495,000 to $515,000.

Real Estate Institute of Victoria chief executive Enzo Raimondo said that growth areas, such as Wyndham, remained popular with buyers throughout the quarter.

“Buyers priced out of higher-priced suburbs look for more a ordable options further out but with infrastructure such as schools and shopping,” he said.

At 11am Tuesday, when Australia pauses for a minute’s silence on Remembrance Day to remember those who died or suffered in wars and armed con icts, the thoughts of Tarneit’s Mark Campbell will turn to his grandfather, George Jolley. A prisoner of war, Mr Jolley was among thousands of troops captured and forced to work on the Thai-Burma Railway during the Second World War. Despite his mates dying around him, Mr Jolley survived. In November next year, Mr Campbell will lead a trek to retrace his grandfather’s footsteps along the railway, but he needs your support to help him get there. ■ Fullstory,page18. CameronTait

Close to 100 people with outstanding warrants valued at more than $302,000 were caught by the Sheri ’s O ce during an operation in Hoppers Crossing last week.

e o ce and Victoria Police carried out an ‘automatic numberplate recognition operation’ onOldGeelongRoadlastWednesday, targeting serial ne evaders.

Motorists’ numberplates were scanned as they drove past.

e operation identi ed 98 drivers with outstanding warrants totalling $302,566.

Sheri Brendan Facey said it was one of the biggest results for his o ce in recent months, and the operation had served to remind people of the serious consequence of failing to pay their nes.

“Payment of nes is not optional,” Mr Facey said.

“People are liable for their outstanding infringements, and continuing to ignore them will not make them go away.”

During the operation, o cers clamped 26 cars and 16 people were issued with notices to suspend their licences or registrations.

Mayor to ‘make things happen’

New Wyndham mayor Peter Maynard knows a thing or two about persistence.

A er rststandingforWerribeeshirecouncil in 1982, he nally won a place at the 2012 city council elections. And last week the Iramoo ward councillor claimed the top job, being elected Wyndham’s mayor.

Cr Maynard, who is ALP-a liated, fought o a challenge from the only other mayoral nominee, long-time Harrison ward councillor Glenn Goodfellow, winning seven votes to four. Formerly president of Wyndham Vale Sports Club and chairman of the Iramoo Community Centre management committee, Cr Maynard said he was “proud and honoured” to have the opportunity to lead the city for the next 12

months. “Our city is growing rapidly and the decisions we make now will set up our city for future generations,” Cr Maynard said.

“Wyndham’s population is already more than 200,000 and by 2030 it will be 430,000, taking us to the size of Canberra.

“We’ll ght hard with those who argue our city is already su ciently funded … not with emotion, but with sound evidence.”

With major projects, including the council’s $45 million Wyndham Leisure and Events Centre redevelopment and the $4 billion Regional Rail Link, due for completion, Cr Maynard vowed to push both state and federal governments for greater investment.

“At the end of the day, it’s irrelevant which

party is in government. What’s important is that the government is made aware of this community’s needs, both now and for the future,” he said.

“ ere’s no use pointing the nger – as a council we need to make things happen.

“Under my leadership, this council will … seek a fair share of funding from both levels of government to make Wyndham more liveable.

“We have shovel-ready projects ready to go.”

For the second year in a row, Wyndham will not have a deputy mayor. However, Cha ey ward councillor Marie Brittan will be acting mayor when Cr Maynard is absent.

being tapped on the shoulder at home, at work, at an event or on the road. We don’t want to seize people’s cars and assets ... we want people to speak with us about their options before they’re caught by the Sheri .”

As reported by Star Weekly, the Sheri ’s O ce issued 22,529 Wyndham residents with warrants for outstanding nes between July 1, 2013 and June 30. e warrants add up to about $54 million. To track unpaid nes or make a payment, visit www. nes.vic.gov.au.

Labor pledge to help ease school costs

ousands of Wyndham families will be helped to pay for their children’s school camps, sports and excursions if Labor wins the state election.

Opposition leader Daniel Andrews said that, if elected, Labor would create a $150 million package to cover the costs of extracurricular activities for struggling families.

Under the proposal, eligible primary school pupils would receive $125 a year, while secondary students would get $225. Payments would go directly to schools but be tied to speci c students. Families with a healthcare card would be eligible.

e announcement follows a Coalition decision to cut the Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA), which provides low-income families with funds to cover school expenses. e EMA provides $200 to families with children in prep, $150 for each child in grades 1-6, $300 for students in year 7 and $250 for students in year 8. e Coalition plans to pay money previously used for the EMA to schools.

Victorian Council of Social Service chief executive Emma King said Labor’s funding would go a long to giving vulnerable students the best chance to participate fully in the opportunities schools have to o er.

It is estimated that 200,000 children across Victoria, including more than 35,000 in the western metropolitan region, receive the EMA.

Top cop Sells message

Wyndham has a new top cop, with Frank Sells replacing Damien Christensen as the municipality’s inspector on Monday.

Inspector Sells, a police o cer for 24 years, most recently worked as the north-west metropolitan region’s road policing inspector.

Inspector Sells said he was looking forward tothejobandbelievedcommunityengagement would be one of his top priorities.

“ is area is no di erent to any other area in the region; community safety is the number one priority,” he said. “ ere’s a real need for us to make sure people are engaged with us.”

Inspector Sells said he was aware of the challenges presented by Wyndham’s rapid population growth and would focus on reducing crime and tackling public and tra c o ences, as well as family violence.

“Family violence is a challenge for the whole organisation. I will need service providers to work with me to address it,” he said.

Inspector Christensen, who showed Inspector Sells around Wyndham last week, took over as the city’s top cop two years ago a er working in Wyndham on three previous occasions in the 1990s and early 2000s.

“It’s a great place to work. It’s a busy area and a rapidly growing municipality,” Inspector Christensen said.

Inspector Christensen said he had worked hard during his time in Wyndham to build a network and tackle the city’s crime issues by engagingwithotherservicesandorganisations, including the council. “It’s not just about police policing; it takes a lot of support from other organisations to work in this area,” he said.

Inspector Christensen will take over as the region’s road policing inspector and will be based in Melbourne.

Werribee man remanded

A Werribee man has been charged with a string of theft and driving offences after being pulled over by police last Sunday. The man, 27, was initially stopped by police on Sayers Road, Tarneit, at 4.10pm for allegedly not wearing a seatbelt. Police say they then searched the man’s utility, allegedly nding a stolen motorcycle and three sets of stolen numberplates. The man was also found to be unlicensed and was on bail for other offences. He was charged with theft of a motorcycle and numberplates, handling stolen goods, unlicensed driving, not wearing a seatbelt, committing offences while on bail and failing to appeal on bail. He has been remanded in custody to face court at a later date.

Wrecking yard on re

Three workers escaped injury after a Hoppers Crossing car wrecking yard caught re last Saturday. The blaze started in a shed at the Forsyth Road business about 5pm. Eight CFA trucks attended the re and police closed Forsyth Road.

Families supported Wyndham’s most vulnerable women and children will bene t from a $3.2 million state government investment in family support and child protection services. Road link to bring relief

e rst stage of one of the key missing links in the city’s arterial road network was opened in Wyndham Vale last ursday.

Wyndham mayor Peter Maynard said the openingofthisstageofArmstrongRoadwould provide much-needed relief for frustrated Wyndham Vale motorists.

A two-kilometre connection between Ballan andGreensroads,the$22.8millionArmstrong Road project includes a bridge over Lollypop Creek, a three-metre-wide o -road shared path and tra c signals at the Ballan Road, Greens

RoadandManorLakesBoulevardintersections.

e road will also provide safe access to the new Wyndham Vale station bus interchange, a taxi rank and commuter carpark. e station is part of the $4.8 billion Regional Rail Link.

Trains are expected to start operating on the 47-kilometre railway line between West Werribee and Southern Cross station from April next year.

e road is named a er Elliott Armstrong, a former British cavalry dragoon, who arrived in Werribee in 1846 and operated a ferry across theWerribeeRiveruntilabridgewascompleted in 1851. Mr Armstrong operated the Bridge Inn,

later renamed the Racecourse Hotel, where the rst meeting of the Road District Board – a forerunner to the council – was held. e rst school in Werribee was established in a shed on the grounds of the inn, where students were taught by Mr Armstrong’s daughter, Ellen.

Cr Maynard said: “ is project is the rst stage in creating an arterial road link to Ison Road and the Princes Freeway, meaning that residents will eventually have an alternative to BallanRoadandWerribeeStreet/CottrellStreet by about 2018-19.”

e project was completed jointly by the council and Regional Rail Link.

Fitness push gets a tick

A Wyndham council push to encourage residents to undertake more physical activity has been recognised by the Heart Foundation.

At the foundation’s local government awards last month, the council was highly commended for its commitment to planning for more open space in the city.

e latest health statistics reveal that 52.5 per cent of Wyndham residents are overweight or obese, while 30 per cent don’t do enough physical activity.

Heart Foundation Victoria chief executive Diana Heggie said Wyndham council had shown a commitment to improving the health and well-being of the community.

“One of Wyndham City’s latest initiatives has been the Saltwater Reserve recreation facility, which includes sports grounds, parks and courts,” she said.

“ e council reports that the new facility has seen an increase in formal and informal recreation levels among a broad section of the community.”

Council well-being portfolio holder Bob Fairclough said addressing the complex factors that impacted on community health was a priority for the council. “[ e Healthy Communities Initiative] has had a very positive e ect on local community health, through development of community kitchens, vegetable gardening workshops and Heart Foundation walking groups,” he said.

Hillier tells

of a strange day in his life

Atrack on the rst album I ever bought (the Beatles’ Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band) was called A Day in the Life. It was actually a few short songs that Lennon and McCartney threw together to make into one song. I had a ‘Day in the Life’ last week.

Song 1: As I approached the West Gate Bridge while driving home from a voiceover job, a truck came up on my right in the outside lane and BANG, a super-loud explosion in my right ear. I had no idea what had happened but knew something was wrong (sharp as a tack, as always). e options that sped through my mind in a nanosecond were many and varied. Had the truck clipped me? Had a bomb gone o ? Did someone shoot me? Hang on, I’m still driving my car, no blood, no sideways movement, no damage I could see. en I noticed the truck had bits of rubber spewing out from beneath the 10 wheels at the back on its le side. One of its tyres had exploded! No guns, bombs, accident reports, bent panels or twisted wreckage. And the truckie just kept on trucking. No damage.

Song 2: Last week my wife encountered the door knocker from Hell. On opening the door she was greeted with: “Hi there, did anyone ever tell you, you have the most beautiful smile?” en he lunged into the house. When my wife politely declined to donate, he brought out this gem: “OK, but can I please get a glass of water?” As the door sailed to its resting place, he went on his way. No problem.

Song 3: You haven’t lived until you’ve lost or misplaced your credit card. A er the initial panic, you cancel the card and get on with your life. en the card turns up in a pocket of your coat, or on the front seat of the car or in the shop you were last at. I lost my card at one of our shopping centres, and it was picked up in the carpark by Tony O’Grady, from the Palm Lake over 50s Resort. He tried to nd the card owner at the shopping centre but when that failed, he looked me up in the White Pages online, phoned my home and told his story. Saltwater centre on the go Saltwater Promenade Community Centre at Point Cook has moved a step closer with the contract for construction of the $7.4 million hub awarded by Wyndham council last week. Works are due to be completed by early 2016. The centre will include a kindergarten, maternal and child health facilities, a community kitchen and an outdoor amphitheatre.

Candidates face pre-poll wishlist

ree weeks out from the state election and the battle lines have been drawn.

Last week, Wyndham council released its Call to the Parties, an election wishlist urging the major parties to respond to the city’s community and infrastructure needs.

A 2013 Auditor-General’s report found Wyndham had an infrastructure funding shortfall of between $975 million and $1.3 billion.

e council’s wishlist calls for the parties to commit to arterial road upgrades, the removal of railway level crossings, improved bus services, ongoing funding for schools to keep up with population growth, a Wyndham crisis intervention and accommodation hub, and increased respite services, particularly for children with disabilities.

Star Weekly provided Liberal Western Metropolitan MP Andrew Elsbury and former Tarneit Labor MP and current Werribee candidate Tim Pallas the opportunity to respond to the council’s wishlist and outline their policies on some of the city’s major issues.

On roads and transport, Mr Elsbury said the Coalition had already delivered a “record number” of bus services to Wyndham, including new routes at Point Cook and Sanctuary Lakes, with work under way on the SneydesRoadinterchangesattheEastWerribee employment precinct.

MrPallassaidLabor, ifelected, wouldremove 50 railway level crossings, including Werribee and Cherry streets, and put $1 billion towards

upgrading outer suburban roads, and while Labor would conduct a feasibility study into a Bay West port between Werribee and Geelong, MrElsburysaidtheCoalitionwas“committed” tobuildingasecondcontainerportatHastings. He said Bay West would overload Wyndham’s transport corridors and decimate recreational shing in Port Phillip Bay.

Governments need to govern … not just for marginal seats ’’ - Gautam Gupta

Education proved a key battleground, with Mr Elsbury saying the Coalition was already building and rebuilding schools across the city, and Mr Pallas promising Labor would provide $10 million to upgrade Tarneit P-9 College and $7 million for Werribee Secondary College.

Labor would also open one of its proposed tech schools in Wyndham to allow secondary students to learn hands-on skills alongside their regular studies.

Onhealth,MrElsburysaidtheCoalitionwas spending $34 million on a new 54-bed mental health unit at Werribee Mercy. Mr Pallas did not release details about Labor’s plans for health in Wyndham.

Wyndham councillor Gautam Gupta said residents were fed up with being overlooked. “We may not be a marginal seat but why should our needs be largely ignored? Governments need to govern for the whole of state, not just marginal seats,” he said.

Fire a timely warning

A man in his 40s was taken to hospital with burns to his arms after a unit fire in Werribee last Friday afternoon.

Emergency services were called to the blaze in Market Road, near Werribee train station, soon after 2.30pm.

Three fire crews fought the fire, with police blocking Market Road and Manly Street, stranding buses at Werribee station.

Werribee CFA Lieutenant Paul Ryan said the unit was already well alight when crews arrived on the scene. The man, who was the only person inside at the time of the fire, is

believed to have been asleep in a bedroom at the rear of the unit when the fire broke out.

Lieutenant Ryan said the blaze most likely started in the bedroom before quickly spreading into the roof, causing an estimated $80,000 damage.

The cause of the fire has yet to be determined but Mr Ryan said it was a timely reminder of the importance of having smoke alarms.

The man was released from hospital on Saturday.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Kindness makes good news

On Sunday, October 26, just after 8am, whilst stationary at traf c lights on the intersection of Leakes and Derrimut roads, a motorist pulled alongside and pointed out that we had a at tyre.

We cautiously proceeded to a safe area where we pulled over and started to unload the baggage compartment to retrieve the spare wheel. Another motorist, seeing our dilemma, pulled up behind with lights ashing and came to our aid. This gentleman expertly changed the wheel and would not accept anything in return.

We do not know his name but we are most grateful. Thanks to this good Samaritan a couple of elderlies were able to reach our destination on time. And thanks also to the rst motorist who alerted us to the puncture.

Mayoral vote “done deal”

The votes to get the mayoral role were all one way (Re: Wyndham: New mayor Peter Maynard ‘proud and honoured’, Star Weekly, online October 29). This was a done deal via ALP councillors.

This person failed for years to get on council, then had to get over the line with preferences from others.

In my view, we should do away with the way councillors do the secret vote and put it to the ratepayers to vote on the mayor. Or simply bring back commissioners.

Angry ratepayer, via web

Hospital upgrade an emergency I’d be interested to know how many people in the emergency department are waiting for a bed in full wards, or a transfer to

another hospital for treatment, which can’t be provided at Werribee. For a city of more than 200,000, our hospital is too small!

Crisis walkouts don’t count

(Re: Mercy’s emergency crisis, Star Weekly, October 29) I took someone to emergency last week about 1am. She was feeling weak and had symptoms that could have been attributed to a heart attack. She had very low blood pressure.

The nurse’s comment: “Is that alright with you?” We were told to sit in the waiting area.

Later, overheard the admissions lady telling someone on the phone the wait for non-urgent cases was about nine hours. In two hours, not one patient was called, two patients had already walked out – we were next to leave. Better to rest and see the local GP, more likely to be faster, and if matters got too bad, call an ambulance.

I guess the walk-outs are not counted in the hours waiting. The le is simply deleted. So add a few more hours to waiting times, the three patients that walked out that morning would not have been the only ones. It is likely that happens every day but does not show in the statistics.

The zoo’s life sciences manager, Meaghan McPharlin, said that within minutes of arriving the pair had found a place in the eucalyptus trees and were munching away on leaves. Koalas in the wild are increasingly under threat as a result of habitat loss, disease and vehicle traf c.

Vegies grown, not eaten

Half the residents of Wyndham are either overweight or obese and only 2.5 per cent eat the recommended two serves of fruit and ve serves of vegetables a day.

ese are the ndings from the most recent Victorian Population Health Survey – and alarm bells are sounding at the council.

is is the third-lowest consumption rate of fruit and vegetables in Victoria despite Wyndham being one of Melbourne’s most important vegetable production areas.

A report on Wyndham’s food system was endorsed by councillors last week, with recommendations including an investigation into the viability of setting up a regional fruit and vegetable market to both support local growers and increase the availability and variety of fresh produce to residents.

e report also proposes that council explore opportunities to amend planning regulations andreducethedensityoffastfoodandtakeaway outlets in Wyndham, while promoting outlets that sell fresh fruit and vegetables.

Greater support for local and commercial ventures that give residents better access to healthy, a ordable food was also cited in the report as an important initiative, as was decreasing or eliminating the advertising of unhealthy foods at council facilities.

“ e imbalance between healthy and unhealthy food options [in Wyndham] is a particular challenge,” the report stated.

It urged the development of a citywide food policybasedoncommunityneedsandattitudes

to food, which can then be used to advocate changes to state and federal policies.

“ ere are large ‘food desert’ areas, where people simply have to travel too far to access fresh fruit and vegetables,” the report found.

“Evidence indicates that the cost, quality and lack of culturally appropriate food prevent residents from eating the foods they want.

“Also, social attitudes and beliefs, combined with large-scale marketing and media, are signi cant in uences on people’s choices and behaviour.”

‘‘ Imbalance between healthy and unhealthy food options … ’’ -Foodreport

Lukar ornton, of Deakin University’s School of Exercise and Nutrition Sciences, applauded the council’s stance on reducing the spread of fast food and takeaway outlets across the city.

“On the outer fringes of Melbourne there’s an oversupply of fast and takeaway food, particularly the big chains,” Dr ornton said.

“And it’s important councils are recognising this is a problem.

“Personally, I would like to have some scope in the planning guidelines to restrict these outlets from opening in areas councils believe are inappropriate, such as close to schools.

“ ere’s a long way to go, but it’s pleasing to see councils such as Wyndham are taking the rst step towards creating a healthy future.”

As part of anti-poverty week, Victorian Certi cate of Applied Learning (VCAL) and pre-VCALstudentsatWCECorganisedafood drive, collecting canned and non-perishable items such as rice, pasta and tinned fruit.

VCAL manager Teresa Vizintin said the students were keen to help people in need, especially young ones.

She said that as part of their studies, students investigated the topic of poverty to learn how they could support others in the community.

Ms Vizintin said the students chose Werribee Support and Housing because it was a local organisation helping local people in crisis.

“ ey realise that donating food items is a great way to help others and can make a big di erence to everyday life,” she said.

“An issue of growing concern in our local community is the rising number of people facing homelessness and the many people who need help to put food on the table. No person chooses to place themselves in the position of needing help for survival.

“I’m exceptionally proud of the choice these young people have made to assist other young people.”

Ellie Haikalis is counting down the days until December 1.

On that day, the Hoppers Crossing resident will be able to access a life-saving drug for a rare mutation of cystic brosis.

Ellie, 12, is so happy to nally be able to get Kalydeco that she plans to postpone her birthday celebrations on November 29 until she has taken the drug and is feeling better.

e winning battle for Kalydeco to be placed on the Pharmaceutical Bene ts Scheme and receive a federal government subsidy has taken more than two years.

e drug helps cystic brosis su erers with a rare gene, G551D, that does not allow salt and uid to ow through their bodies. e result is a build-up of sticky mucus in the lungs and digestive system.

About eight per cent of cystic brosis patients in Australia – about 200 people – have the gene.

Kalydeco addresses the underlying causes of G551D, allowing patients to have a better quality of life. It costs $300,000 a year.

At the age of 11, Ellie was diagnosed with cystic brosis in August last year .

Without Kalydeco, she has been taking 20 tablets and three inhalers a day in a bid to stay healthy.

Her mum, Rachelle, said the family was relieved that the drug had nally been added to the PBS.

“It will help Ellie so much. It’s the best thing that could have happened,” she said. “When Ellie was rst diagnosed, we were told we would probably wait two to four weeks for Kalydeco to be added to the PBS. at was last August.”

Mrs Haikalis says she’s proud of how Ellie has handled the long wait. “She is such a strong girl.”

Logo use clari ed, for the record

Wyndham council has developed a policy protecting the use of its logo, a er its alleged misuse by a councillor in an advertisement promoting his business interests earlier this year.

A report to last week’s council meeting stated that use of the logo is covered in the city’s corporate identity policy and discussed in the Governing Wyndham framework, but a stand-alone policy was “warranted” to ensure there is “clarity” around its use.

Survival spurs a journey

e day before Mark Campbell joined the navy in 1987, his grandfather, George Jolley, sat him down for a talk.

estoryhewastoldwasoneofextraordinary survival during the Second World War.

In the lead-up to Remembrance Day on November 11, the Tarneit resident shared his grandfather’s story and that of a planned epic undertaking to re-trace his steps along the ai-Burma Railway.

George Jolley was a sergeant in the Royal Indian Corp signals reservist section.

During the fall of Singapore in February, 1942, he was among more than 100,000 soldiers captured by the Japanese. His next 18 months can only be described as a living hell.

Mr Jolley and his mates were herded into cattle wagons for a 10-day train journey to Bangkok in sweltering conditions with very little water.

At the end of the journey, they were forced to walk through jungle before being ordered to prepare the railway on the side of a cli .

“Hesu eredverybadlyandhadtoworkevery day building a viaduct, before being marched 100 kilometres along Hell re Pass through some of the worst terrain you can imagine,” Mr Campbell said. “Many died from dysentery, cholera, malaria or as a result of being tortured or beaten by the Japanese and Korean guards.”

In October, 1943, the railway was completed but Mr Jolley was soon ghting for life once again. Battling a severe case of beriberi, due to a lack of vitamin D, his body had swollen to such an extent he was unable to move.

“ ey couldn’t nd a pulse on him and he was put with the rest of the dead bodies,” Mr Campbell said. “He came to and scared the bejesus out of the Japanese guards.”

Mr Jolley worked at Petchaburi Air eld in Bangkok and only discovered the war had ended when he woke one morning to nd the Japanese guards had le in the middle of the night following the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

For Mr Campbell, following his father and joining the Royal Navy at age 18 before transferring to the Royal Australian Navy was something he was destined to do.

In November next year, Mr Campbell will lead a 325-kilometre trek along the railway to honour his grandfather and raise money for charities including the ai-Burma Railway Centre,LegacyandAutismSpectrumAustralia, a disorder which a ects his three boys. e journey will become a DVD, Jolley’s Crossing, with Mr Campbell needing to raise a further $50,000 before the trek can go ahead. Pharmacist a generous friend

Hinton Edward Lowe Pharmacist and Justice of the Peace 8-7-1921 – 15-10-2014

Born in Bright, Hinton Lowe grew up through the Great Depression, a time when unemployment reached 30 per cent and the hardships su ered by so many engendered strong values of hard work, thri , and both family and community solidarity and service.

Mr Lowe attended school at Melbourne’s Trinity Grammar, where he held a scholarship as a choirboy under the direction of renowned organist and choirmaster Dr A. E. Floyd.

His love of the religious and other classical music continued throughout his life. Mr Lowe maintainedhisAnglicanfaithandwasamember of the congregation and a churchwarden at St omas Church in Werribee, where his funeral was held on October 22.

Mr Lowe arrived in Werribee in 1952, when the town was a rural outpost of Melbourne with a population of only 3500. He opened a pharmacy in Watton Street and his customer base grew rapidly as he became known as a warm and generous friend, particularly to the large numbers of migrants in the area.

Lowe’s Pharmacy was more than a business. As well as its professional contribution to health in the community, it became a base for Mr Lowe’s many other community projects, including launching an ambulance service, serving on the community management of the Werribee Hospital, establishing an aged care home and a public housing loan facility.

An active member of the Freemasons, which he joined in 1944, Mr Lowe eventually rose to positions of leadership within the organisation.

A keen follower of sport, Mr Lowe enjoyed tennis and was a keen Fitzroy Football Club supporter, with Hadyn Bunton one of his early heroes.

But cricket was his great passion and, like most Australians, he watched the feats of Don Bradman with a sense of awe.

A notable Justice of the Peace, Mr Lowe was awarded life membership of the Victorian Association of Honorary Justices and he continued as an active volunteer JP until last year.

Mr Lowe married Roma Fisher in 1943 and later Anne Klepner, who died in 2012.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia, and his four children, Hinton, Toylaan, Nova and Kim.

MY WYNDHAM

A er singing and performing his way through almost four decades, Wyndham resident Alan ompson says theatre is close to his heart. By Rebecca Miller.

What’s your connection to the local community?

We came to live in Werribee in 1976 and now live in Westleigh Gardens.

I’ve played acoustic guitar since the age of seven, and toured Italy with Esprit Choir. I joined Wyndham eatre Company (then Werribee eatre Company) in 1990, with lead roles in South Paci c, Bye Bye Birdie, My Fair Lady, and many plays.

I’mpresidentofWyndham eatreCompany and was musical director of the Werribee singers, until they retired. I’ve also performed at Werribee Park with Melton, Werribee and Australian airforce bands.

I’m a member of Crossroads Uniting Church resources committee and, through the church, I am an active Kids Hope mentor, mentoring a pupil at Werribee Primary School.

I also assist Werribee Secondary College with their theatre productions, including set building and lighting.

Whatdoyoulikeaboutyourneighbourhood?

We’re close to the beach at Werribee South, the Surf Coast and Bellarine Peninsula, and only 26 minutes to the city.

We’re also close to the country, including places such as Ballarat. We’ve got everything we need, such as a decent shopping centre and Avalon airport nearby.

Whatwouldyouchange?

Infrastructure and tra c are a real issue. We need to improve public transport.

Health services need more funding, as places such as the Mercy Hospital have long delays

in emergency because they’re not equipped to handle the population growth.

What do you remember being in Wyndham that’snolongerthere?

I miss the country town feel from back when we arrived in the ’70s. It’s not as easy to get around any more.

When we moved here there were paddocks behind our house and I could walk the dog there … now it’s housing. ere’s a great mix of cultures now that didn’t used to be here. When we came, the churches were full of Aussies and now they’re Koreans and Sudanese, which adds to the richness of the community.

What’s you favourite eatery or place to get co ee?

We have dinner with the family at Jackson’s on K, it’s quite nice there.

ey’re lots of good co ee shops in Werribee. I would like to see shops and restaurants along the riverfront. Wyndham Cache is great for Devonshire tea on Sundays or brunch or lunch.

Go a little bit M.A.D

A Holden salesman once told me Fords are not cars, they’re 20,000 spare parts travelling in close formation.

e work of Swiss artist Fabian Oefner reminds me of this statement. His meticulously accurate cars explode into their individual parts. He’s an artist adopted by the M.A.D Gallery, a homage to mechanical art devices.

Ifyou’reatechnologynutandyou’veneverheardofthe M.A.D.Gallery,youhaveatreatinstore.I knewnothing of it until a media release turned up from someone in Geneva plugging a book of truck photography.

Truck photography? Has someone suddenly made trucks beautiful? A er looking, I decided not. But the gallery’s website is stunning.

M.A.D. Gallery’s website is chockers with beautiful and compelling technology. It’s big on watches and timepieces (it calls them horological machines) but it also deals with motorcycles, penny-farthings, music boxes, musical instruments and Fabian Oefner’s exploding cars.

e M.A.D. Gallery opened in 2011 in Geneva’s old town – and a second M.A.D. Gallery has since opened in,ofallplaces,Taipei.Aswellasapermanentdisplayof timepieces, it gathers glorious examples of mechanical artfromaroundtheworld,“eachonemakingyourheart beat that little bit faster”, the website assures.

e gallery is an o shoot of an operation called MB&F, or Maximilian Büsser and friends, which has gathered people to design and build a radical and original “horological masterpiece” every year.

Büsser started out working for watch company Jaeger-LeCoultre and then ran a company specialising in rare timepieces, before forming MB&F in 2005. S is for spring and summer, a great time of year to enjoy having pets, especially if you consider these safety tips. S is for sunstroke, a risk on hot days. So ensure pets have plenty of shade and water. Smaller pets, such as rabbits, may need to be kept indoors. Do not exercise pets in the heat of the day and never leave pets in your car.

S is for skin irritation, with ea bite allergy the most common problem. Ensure good ea control for dogs and cats with a monthly spot-on from your vet. Medication can provide relief if there is hair loss or redness associated with itching. Pets which sunbake should have pet sunscreen applied daily and kept in the shade to avoid skin cancer.

S is for seeds, with grass seeds often lodging in the ears or feet of hairy dogs. Avoid areas with long grass, check your pets coats regularly and consider clipping their coats short.

S is for snakes, which love a warm day, so avoid pets walking in long grass and near rivers. Snakebite is a life-threatening emergency, with signs including vomiting, collapse and respiratory failure.

S is for snail-pellets, another dangerous toxin if eaten by your pet. Signs include seizures and collapse. Again, veterinary treatment should be sought immediately.

TARNEIT 12 Borboleta Street, 3029

Having been freshly painted inside, this house will feel like new when the next owners move in. The brick veneer has plenty of room for a large family, with four bedrooms, including the main with walk-in wardrobe and en suite with twin-basin vanity unit and a large shower. The remaining bedrooms have built-in wardrobes. A carpeted lounge room is separate from the family-meals zone and there’s a big rumpus room. The kitchen has stainless-steel appliances and plenty of storage. Ducted heating, an alarm, water tank, remote-controlled double garage with internal access, and additional off-street parking space are included. Out back also has plenty of room to entertain in an undercover area. The 570-square-metre block is in the heart of Tarneit, with parks within walking distance, while The Grange P-12 College, Good News Lutheran College and shops are nearby.

HOPPERS CROSSING 263 Morris Road, 3029

For location and abundant space, this Hoppers Crossing property is probably hard to beat. The 781-square-metre block has proximity to childcare, Derrimut Heath and St James the Apostle primary schools, Hogans Road Reserve and Hogans Corner shops. The house has four bedrooms, including the main with walk-in wardrobe and en suite; a bathroom; carpeted lounge room with bay window; tiled family-meals zone and kitchen with timber cupboards, an abundance of storage and bench space and a dishwasher. And neutral tones throughout are ideal for the new owners who won’t have to worry about their furnishings not tting in. Ducted heating, a double garage with back access, and extra off-street parking space are included. The back and front yards have established gardens, with fruit trees and a paved partially undercover area the standout features.

Families looking to upsize before Christmas can do so with this spacious house in Hoppers Crossing. The oor plan is ideal for parents, with their bedroom at the front of the house and the kids’ bedrooms down the back. The main bedroom has a walk-in wardrobe and ensuite, while the remaining three bedrooms have built-in wardrobes and share the bathroom; the toilet is separate. A large, open-plan lounge-dining room with air-conditioner is separate from the living room with wall gas heater. Stainless-steel appliances, including a dishwasher, are kitchen highlights, and there’s ample storage space. Out back is a paved undercover area with a spa. A double garage with back access is another handy addition. The 900-square-metre block in Cambridge estate is within walking distance of Cambridge Primary School and The Grange P-12 College, while Werribee Plaza is a short drive away.

There’s no need to move to the country to acquire a large block of land with a big house when this one in Hoppers Crossing just may t the bill. The 2040-square-metre block has a huge backyard which had plans and permits approved in the past for three single-storey residences which could be renewed, subject to council approval. The double-storey house has ve bedrooms, including the main with walk-in wardrobe and en suite with spa. There’s also bathroom, powder room and study. Two separate living rooms are downstairs, including a family-meals zone with polished oorboards, and a lounge room, and an additional one up top. The large kitchen has a walk-in pantry, oodles of storage and bench space and stainless-steel appliances, including a dishwasher. Another two areas are ideal for entertaining: the pergola with paving underfoot, and a separate enclosed room. A double garage and carport are other perks.

LJ Hooker: 9748

Looking mighty ne kerbside, with its mix of formal hedging, roses, lavender and agapanthus beautifying the garden, this period-style house has plenty of old-world features but is modern to its back teeth.

Elements such as painted rosettes on 2.7-metre ceilings, deep skirts, stepped cornices and utterly elegant window dressings are a backdrop to spacious rooms in a layout that suits a family’s need for separate spaces. Outdoor areas are equally well executed, with an attention to detail that elevates the liveability factor.

Entry is into a tiled foyer, to the left of which is a carpeted lounge room with an

extra-wide bay window, beautifully dressed.

The main bedroom opposite has a walk-in robe-cum dressing room, and an en suite that re ects the period style; it has a cream and burgundy decor, a blackwood vanity unit and an enclosed toilet.

Two more bedrooms are down a carpeted hallway, each with lots of storage, as are the laundry with blackwood storage cupboards, bench and closets; a separate toilet; and the main bathroom decked out the same as the smaller, but with cream and emerald decor.

Part of the large, tiled living hub, the kitchen has blackwood cabinetry, an island

bench, walk-in pantry, wall oven, gas cooktop and dishwasher: everything on tap for the family cook.

A set of french doors with bevelled panes opens from the hub to a large, carpeted rumpus room (timber blinds in here), with the fourth bedroom next door – this has a wardrobe, built-in desk and ceiling fan. This is a great set-up for a teen, but also allows the kids to make a bit of noise without disturbing the rest of the household.

The family room accesses a covered pergola above brick paving; a pretty relaxation spot, with its rendered feature wall and total privacy. And there’s another

timber pergola next to it, open to the sunshine but with a wisteria creeping over it to lter harsher rays.

The block of about 1000 square metres has a big backyard rimmed by pittosporums, garden beds planted with roses, and a garden shed.

On Werribee’s popular south side, the property has ducted heating, evaporative cooling, an alarm system and a brick-paved driveway leading to a double garage.

Get the dirt on a scarce vintage

L ast year I travelled to McLaren Vale to look at dirt. ere was a ne line-up of wines to taste, too, but the dirt was the star of the show. It wasn’t just any dirt, but a tapestry of ancient soil formations that date back hundreds of millions of years with names including Pirramimma Sandstone, Blanche Point, Kurrajong and Ngaltinga formations.

To anyone driving around the Vale that day, our small group must have been quite a sight as we stopped at roadside cuttings to point at and talk about the ancient soil formations.

Since 2009 many of McLaren Vale’s winemakers have made small batches of shiraz grown on individual soils to get an understanding of what in uences the soils have on the wines. ey bottle the wines under the Scarce Earth banner.

e idea is to bottle a shiraz from a single vineyard, making it in a hands-o manner to give the dirt the best chance to stamp its character on the wine.

e fourth Scarce Earth vintage has just been released. Having tasted wines from each release, I can tell you that for pure enjoyment the latest releases, from the 2012 vintage, are the best yet.

ere’s a purity to the wines that also helps tell the story of McLaren Vale’s ancient soils.

It’s a story more about structure and tannin than avour, says Chapel Hill’s Michael Fragos, one of Scarce Earth’s driving forces since its conception.

“ e di erences [we see] now we’re ve years in are the tannins: their roundness and the shape of the tannins,” he says. “ ere are avour di erences in shiraz depending on where you are but, in 2012, which was an even,

Motoring

fast-ripening year, I don’t think there’s a huge avour di erence in the wines.

“But when you start drilling into the structure, the mouthfeel and the tannins are where you really start to see di erences.

“[With] Christies Beach formation and Ngaltinga black cracking clays and heavier soil pro les, you’re getting more primary fruit characters as a rule of thumb. e wines have more upfront fruit and rounder tannins.

“ e ner soils, such as Tapley Hill formation and North Maslin sands and Blanche Point, where there’s shallower soils and rock over sandstone, youtend to ndthetanninsare ner and grittier.”

Fragos says that the focus is shi ing away from simply soil to the other elements of terroir.

“Early on we focused hard on the geology front and we’ve now taken a step back and are also recognising all the other topographic di erences that a ect the grapes – there’s soil, climate, aspect,” he says. “If you’re closer to the sea you have sea breezes and if you’re inland you are more in uenced by the gully winds.”

We’re only a few chapters into the Scarce Earth story and I’m already looking forward to the 2013 instalment.

Scarce Earth wines are made in small quantities and are available direct from the wineries online.

Some will also appear at Melbourne’s better wine merchants in the next few weeks.

Bees get the chance to open a gap

Werribee has the chance to become part of a two-club breakaway at the top of Bowls Victoria’s division 1 section 2 ladder.

e Bees, along with Altona (2), are already a game clear of third-placed Melton.

ey can extend that when they meet Melton inanearly-seasonshowdownatChirnsidePark on Saturday.

Bees skip Snowy Barker told Star Weekly newly promoted Melton was an unknown quantity, but results so far suggested it could prove a tough nut to crack.

“ ey’ve just come up from division 1, so it will be interesting to see how they line up,” Barker said.

“We’ll do what we do best and let them worry about us.”

e Bees return home a er a fruitful fortnight on the road that saw them notch back-to-back wins.

eir away form has been superb this summer with a perfect three from three - a starkcontrasttothemiseryexperienceontheir travels in recent seasons.

ey wore down Donvale on Saturday to claim a 94-80 victory a er the rinks were split at two apiece.

Barker’s rink was the di erence between the sides, although the 17-shot margin was not all plain sailing.

“We were up by about the margin we won by and then dropped about three or four ends in a row,” he said. “ at put them within a shot.

“We were in a bit of a rut and it wasn’t

helping the overall score. It was just a lack of concentration.”

Mick O’Neil was the other winning rink, up by six shots. O’Neil has been a mark of consistency over the rst month, although that is not totally unexpected.

“He’s an experienced player,” Barker said. “He’s played state bowls, played in group sides and has won a few things.”

Jayden Christie’s rink went down by eight, while caretaker skip Peter Ware had a narrow one-shot loss that went down to the last end.

Ware lled in admirably for regular skip Rob Panton, who will bolster the line-up with his return for the big clash with Melton.

Hoppers break drought

A er ipping the page on the calender, leaving a month of losses in October behind them, Hoppers Crossing nally broke through for its rst win since being promoted to the Bowls Victoria division 2 competition.

Hoppers not only beat Sunshine City, they trounced them in a four-rinks-to-nothing 101-64 victory at home on Saturday. oughrelievedtoseetheendofafour-game losing streak, Hoppers coach Ian Andrew was not so shocked by the result.

“We’d played two top teams in a row and they’d only just beat us in the past couple of weeks,” he told StarWeekly “ e team has been improving every week and it was only a matter of time before we had a win.”

e win has li ed Hoppers o the bottom of the ladder.

At the midway point of Saturday’s game, Hoppers had two rinks down, but the two skippers fought hard to get their crews back

into the contest and help secure all four rinks and an all-important maximum 18 points.

“It turned out to be a perfect day,” Andrew said.

“At the break, we were 25 shots up and we improved on that.

“ ere were two rinks down and we spoke to them about improving, to try and get the points, and they did the job as well.

“We kept the foot on the accelerator, kept the concentration levels up, and that’s something we’ve been working on since day one.”

Wind and rain made an uncomfortable day for bowlers.

But Hoppers handled the conditions much better than its opposition.

“ e wind was blowing everyone’s hat o , it was a ecting the bowls, so you really had to concentrate hard on your game,” Andrew said.

“ItwasreallyhardtoplayandIgivethemalot of credit for the way they played the conditions.

“I was really proud of them.”

John Robertson’s rink was the talk of the club on Saturday night a er a 30-9 dismantling

■ It’s the time of year when all football clubs are looking for players, coaches and trainers for the coming season. Gone are the days when all these roles were lled by volunteers. These days roles for volunteers are becoming fewer and fewer. You only have to look at someone like Dr Greg Anderson at Werribee Football Club. He’s a club legend and life member, a sponsor, and part of the furniture. The Doc, and I don’t mean this in a bad way, is a dying breed. He comes from a generation that would get involved in a club and never ask for a pay cheque. While times have changed, being involved at a club is still a good thing to have on your CV. Roles are not expected to be voluntary these days, because the commitment is more and more time-consuming as all clubs become more professional. Sports clubs are changing – it’s a new landscape, whether we like it or not.

■ I question whether cricket is losing the battle against football as our national sport, and whether soccer is slowly coming up on all the major sports as a legitimate challenger … school yards are more likely to be the scene of a soccer match than either cricket or football. There is no doubt soccer is the easiest game to play in any con guration – one ball, some space and off you go. The basic rules are simple and, unlike cricket and AFL, it requires minimum skill to be involved and feel part of the game. All sports have to take a reality check and engage with the next generation in all aspects, whether that be as a player, supporter or whatever.

■ It was only a few years ago that no one talked about local footy till after Christmas, but those days are gone. WRFL premiership teams used not to train till after the New Year, but not any more. They all start a program pre-Melbourne Cup day and get stuck into it well before Christmas, such is the professionalism these days. I’m not convinced it’s a good thing, but it is the way of the world. If you put your hand out for a payment then you have to put in the effort to justify that reward. My only hope is that junior players continue to play the game because they love it rather than because they can make a lot of money playing it.

of their Sunshine City opponents. Robertson started the game impressively and never let up.

“Instead of slacking o at the end, they kept going for the whole game,” Andrew said.

Andrew was comfortably up 21-12, while Dennis Hewitt (25-22) and Bill Weir (22-21) made it a clean sweep.

Weir had the rest of his teammates on a knife’s edge on the last end.

“Heonlygotinfrontonthelastend,”Andrew said.

“It was pretty exciting because we were all standingtherewatchinghimplayhislastbowl.”

Hoppers are now oozing con dence ahead of their trip to Altona Sports.

Buttherearenoillusionsaboutthedi culties of the assignment that sits in front of them.

“ at will be a big test for us,” Andrew said.

“ ey’re sitting above us on the ladder and we’ll get to see how good we are.

“We’re not going out there thinking we’re going to beat them easily.

“But if we play well again, we’ve got a good chance,” he said.

■ Finally, vale Alva Bugg. The Werribee sports community sends its condolences to Artie and his family and friends in the sad passing of Alva. RIP.

National champion stays true to her Werribee roots

Morgan Mitchell is one of the rising stars of Australian athletics, but she has not forgotten where it all started.

e national 400 metres champion returned to the Werribee Little Athletics Centre on Friday night with former teammate Aliesha Newman to present badges to new captains.

Newman and Mitchell were captain and vice-captain in their time at the centre.

Centre events co-ordinator Noraine Singletary said it was great the captain and vice-captain from ve years ago continued to contribute to the club.

“ ey’re two kids who put a lot in,” she said. “ at’s what we’re trying to instil in our new captains and vice-captains – that it’s great to put back into the community as community has given to you.

“Every time we ask for these kids to volunteer their time, they do it.”

Mitchell,whoturned20lastmonth, stormed home to win the women’s 400 metres at the Australian Athletics Championships at Albert Park in April.

She went on to represent Australia at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, reaching the semi- nals.

While it took Mitchell a while to nd her feet inathletics, coachesattheWLACcouldtellshe was destined for big things.

“When she was really little, she struggled for a while there, then she found her big legs and big feet and away she went,” Singletary said.

“It wasn’t until under-8s and 9s that she started to nd herself.

“You could tell from very little that she was going to be successful.”

While members of the WLAC are proud of Mitchell’s achievements on the running track, they are just as thrilled with the person she has grown into away from the bright lights of international competition.

“It’s not just that she’s a successful athlete, it’s that she’s putting back into the club and volunteering her time and wants to be a part of where she originally started,” Singletary said.

“She puts in every year for the kids and that will instil great values into the new captains.”

e 2014-15 captains are Emily Day (captain) and Demi Utber (vice-captain) in the girls’ section, and Daly Andrews (captain) and Fraser Paull (vice-captain) in the boys’ section.

Pitcher mourns a mate

Tayler Rowe was high on the list of Werribee Giants’ recruiting priorities in the o -season.

e Giants called on some big guns to get the homegrown starting pitcher to return to the club for a tilt at a Baseball Victoria summer league division 2 premiership.

Head coach Justin Charles put the call out, as did the much-respected Phil Balzer, but the person who got their target to put pen to paper was one of the playing leaders and a long-time Rowe friend, Michael Riches.

A er numerous phone calls and text messages, Riches got his man.

According to Rowe, Riches “was the main one”.

“He was always hounding me at the start of every season, messaging me at out, calling me through the season,” Rowe said.

“I thought, all right – I’ll give it a crack and go back.”

One of the biggest lures for Rowe was the chance to play in the same team as Riches once more.

But on the eve of the season, Riches was tragically killed in a road accident. e loss remains fresh in the minds of Giants players and supporters, who continue to get emotional about losing one of the most respected people at the club.

ey are using baseball as a tool to help them through the grieving process and doing what Riches would want them to be doing – going out every Sunday a ernoon and giving their all to pick up wins.

Rowe would give anything to have Riches back in the team and would trade “1000” wins on the mound to have his friend back.

“It sucks not having him there,” Rowe said. “He was a good guy, a really good guy – there’s not anyone that could say anything bad about him. He was spot on.

“ is season was going to be the best season he was going to play. He never trained so hard for baseball, ever.

“We’re all doing it for him this season – we all want to make him proud.” Rowe will have a massive role to play for the Giants.

e25-year-oldwillsharethemajorpitching duties – both starting and closing – with youngster Wes De Jong.

“It’s all up to the coach,” said Rowe, who returnedtoWerribeea erastintwithSunshine in the summer league and with Bacchus Marsh in winter ball. Rowe expects to have his best season yet on the mound as he links up with catcher Oliver Box.

e pair grew up playing baseball together

and are certainly on the same wavelength during matches.

“I haven’t had a connection with any catcher I pitched to other than ‘Boxy’,” Rowe said.

“We connect really well; we don’t have to say much, we know what we’re doing. He’s got a lot of experience and it makes it a lot easier, knowingyou’vegotsomeoneonthesamelevel.”

e Giants made it four wins on the trot on Sunday when they edged out Springvale 3-2 at Presidents Park.

ey will face the Vales again on ursday in the early 6.30pm game at Melbourne Ball Park.

OnSunday,from3.30pm,theGiantswilltake on Berwick City at Werribee No.3 diamond.

’Bridge nails another

win

Bellbridge kept its perfect record intact with a comfortable 57-run win over Caroline Springs in the Williamstown and District Cricket Association A turf at Heathdale College Oval on Saturday.

e Bridge made an imposing 6-170 from35overs,withimportwicketkeeperbatsman Josh Downie leading the way with 40 and meaningful contributions coming from Martin Ritchie (34), Josh Webb (34no) and Matthew Edsall (26). eSpringswereonthebackfootearly, losing 3-7 before a 56-run fourth-wicket stand between Dave Martin (55) and captain Troy Blackman (22) breathed life into the chase.

e Bridge steadied to have the hosts all out for 113. e Bridge collected its fourth win in a row on the back of strong bowling performances from Jake Styles (3-33) and skipper Andrew Wilks (3-30).

Bellbridge can further extend its lead at the top of the ladder when it battles winless Gellibrand at Moss eld Reserve in a two-dayer starting on Saturday.

Bulldogs facing big run chase

Footscray Edgewater and Camberwell Magpies are locked in a tight battle a er day one of their Premier Cricket clash at the Camberwell Sports Ground. Set 271 for victory, the Bulldogs were 1-24 in reply at stumps, with in-form batsmen James Crosthwaite (11) and Travis Dean (10) surviving late overs following the departure of captain Dean Russ for one.

e task would have been a whole lot bigger for the Dogs’ batsmen had it not been for speedster Jake Haber eld’s six-wicket haul.

He nished with 6-58 o 24.4 overs, o eringareminderofwhyhewasthebest bowler in the competition last summer. Dean chipped in with 2-32, while Tallan Wright and Lucas Dredge were the other wicket-takers.

e Bulldogs require 247 with nine wickets in hand to avoid a third consecutive loss.

HiLux sports ute worth the wait

A huge, ultra-conservative car maker like Toyotaneverdoesanythinginahurry.Yeteven by its own standards, the length of time taken for Toyota to move into the sports ute market segment could be considered excessive.

e giant has nally stirred – and come up with a HiLux sports ute that is worth the wait.

Toyota HiLux Black is based on the SR5 4WD double-cab pickup.
