No false alarms By ERIN SOMERVILLE THE Country Fire Authority is wasting precious time and resources responding to dozens of false bushfire reports. The CFA confirmed that its District 24, which includes Wodonga, Bright, Corryon, Myrtleford, and Yackandandah and Dartmouth, has responded to up to 70 call-outs in the past month which have turned out to simply be legal burn-off activities on private properties. While many of these property owners had been burning off without

council permits, or hadn’t notified the CFA of their burn-off activities, other permitted fires had been called in as a bushfire by neighbours. As the temperatures increase and the country heads towards bushfire season, Wodonga CFA station manager David Brown said crews were getting frustrated with landowners who failed to comply with the rules and residents who made hasty reports. “At this time of year prior to going into the fire danger period, it’s important not to ignore the municipal bylaws,” he said.

“It’s a big burden on our volunteer workforce. “Twenty to 30 volunteers are giving up their home and work time.” Wodonga Council’s burn-off regulations mean during the non-bushfire season, no burning off is allowed in areas smaller than 2000 square metres, while those who can burn off need a permit and to report their activities to the CFA. Obtaining a burn-off permit from council also ensures neighbours are notified of the activity, who are often responsible for the false reports.

“The majority of people who ring up are someone who’s got washing on the line next door.” The issue is one that has been plaguing the CFA for years, says former Myrtleford CFA volunteer firefighter Len Trezise, who has served for 48 years. “I hear on my scanner every day of CFA fire brigades responding to fire reports only to find out when they arrive that it is a landowner burning off, and the fire is under control, and hasn’t been reported ... through the CFA Burn Off notification number.

“People make reports when they see smoke, but they should be more aware - if they see smoke, first find out if it’s a burn-off.” Mr Trezise said media and the governments also needed to ramp up their role in promoting the CFA Burn Off number, including highlighting it on the annual rates notices, in newsletters, and through social media. Burnoff permits can be obtained from local councils, with the costs covering an inspection of the planned burn-off site to ensure it’s safe to do so. Phone 1800 668 511 to register your burn-off.

Hope springs in heat ERIN SOMERVILLE THE Border stands as Australia’s second biggest Relay for Life team as thousands of people braved the warm weather to raise money for cancer. A whopping $440,000 was raised as 153 teams, and a grand total of 2600 participants, lapped Wodonga’s Birallee Park over the weekend. Teams put their best foot forward to raising funds at 9.30am Saturday, and walked through until 9am Sunday. While numbers were slightly down on last year, the effort left organisers overwhelmed by the effort of the community. “We had a really great weekend and raised more than expected,” Relay for Life spokesperson Kate Wilkinson said. “We are always just amazed at the support on the Border, as they come and stand shoulder to shoulder to help fight cancer.” Some dedicated teams have been raising all year round to contribute to the grand total, while others managed to raise a significant amount only since June. While temperatures on the weekend hovered around the 30 degree mark, participants weren’t put off participating in the relay, or the inaugural half marathon as part of the event. “Cancer doesn’t stop for the weather, and neither do we,” she said. The half-marathon drew 24 participants, and is expected to become a growing sector of the large event. Good karma also played a role in the day, with one lucky participant taking home a new car as part of the event’s gate prize.

At your service By ERIN SOMERVILLE MORE jobs and easier access to State Government departments are some of the benefits outlined in the move to hub many public services under one roof in Albury. The creation of Service NSW, announced by Member for Albury Greg Aplin last week, will house services such as the NSW Registry of Births, Deaths, and Marriages, Roads and Maritime, NSW Fair Trading services, and more at the Smollet Street Australian Tax Office building. The service will also operate under extended business hours, from 7am until 7pm throughout the week, and 9am until 3pm on Saturday. Mr Aplin said the opening of Service NSW in Albury was not a cost-cutting measure, but rather saw the government investing more money into bringing the services together into one building. He also guaranteed that no jobs would be lost in the move, and that Service NSW extended business hours would only continue to benefit the community and create employment. It is estimated the centre will require 20 employment positions. “There will be an extension of jobs and extended hours will require more people,” Mr Aplin said. “This is an exciting new development for the residents and businesses of Albury. “The CBD precinct will enable customers to carry out multiple government transactions under the same roof while combining visits to nearby offices and shopping areas.” A new manager for the centre

Member for Albury Greg Aplin and Service NSW Albury manager Carolyne Hartwig are excited about Picture: ERIN SOMERVILLE the service's new opening. 129725 had already been announced, with Carolyne Hartwig, who has worked as the local Motor Registry manager for seven years, taking on the role. Service NSW is expected to open before April, 2015. Applications for positions to join

Albury’s Service NSW team are already open, but staff currently working for the Motor Registry and Fair Trading will be given priority. The current motor registry at the corner of Hume and Macauley Street will continue to serve custom-

ers until the new centre opens, when it will then move both administrative and light vehicle driver testing services to Smollet Street. Heavier vehicle testing will be conducted at a location soon to be announced.

THE Border proved its towns truly are beautiful, picking up a string of nominations and awards at this year’s Keep Australia Beautiful Victoria Tidy Towns awards. Rutherglen Historical Society has been announced as winner of the Community Action/ Population Under 3000 category Sustainable Communities Awards 2014 for their Every Picture Tells a Story initiative. Sustainability Victoria CEO Stan Krpan congratulated the local group at the awards this month, describing their efforts as inspirational examples of communities working together to improve their environment. “The Rutherglen Historical Society has done a terrific job in creating a photographic display of the early life and times of St Mary’s Primary School and Mt Carmel Secondary School,” he said. The display was created using information and photos from the Rutherglen community, archives of the Presentation Sisters in Gardenvale, and archives from the Sandhurst diocese. The photos include the first group of nuns who came to Rutherglen Mount Carmel convent in 1901, the building of the second convent in 1924, and St Mary’s church that burnt down in 1961, followed by the building of the new church and its official opening. Beechworth was named overall Keep Australia Beautiful Victoria (KABV) Tidy Town of the Year, recognised for a range of individual and community-driven initiatives, and will now represent Victoria at the Australian TidyTowns Awards next year. The KABV Tidy Towns - Sustainable Communities Awards are managed by Sustainability Victoria.

Shaken, not stirred by quake ties have occurred in the Holbrook area in the past 100 years, with four occurring since 2010. The largest of these movements was a 2.6 magnitude tremor recorded on 25 May, 2011. Mr Bathgate said local fault lines were responsible for the seismic activity. “Australia is in the middle of a tectonic plate, and right down through the crust are old (local) fault lines. “The plate’s moving northeast seven centimetres a year. “They are stress impacted and occasionally the local fault lines give way to help relieve pressure.”

HOLBROOK residents should not be alarmed after a small tremor last week stirred up media reports that a more destructive event could be looming, according to a senior seismologist at Geoscience Australia. The 2.1 magnitude tremor that was felt in the town and surrounding area at 11.53am on Thursday is a non-concerning event, said Geoscience Australia’s senior seismologist Jonathan Bathgate. “It’s not particularly significant,” Mr Bathgate said. “It would only be felt in a relatively small radius, and we weren’t flooded with reports.” “To put it in perspective, so

far this year we have seen 400 tremors between 1 to 2.5 magnitude. “Events in that range are quite regular.” The epicentre of the tremor was reported to be five kilometres north-west of Holbrook. Geoscience Australia said no aftershocks had been recorded in the area since Thursday. A tremor in the magnitude of what was felt on Thursday can be felt in the local area. Loud cracking and a short jolt, as Holbrook residents have reported, could be expected. Damage can start to occur when earthquakes reach a magnitude of four and over. A total of 15 seismic activi-

“IT’S a lot like painting the Sydney Harbour Bridge - you finish and then have to start back over again. This is how Albury Hume Rotary Club member Terry Simmonds describes the fight against graffiti in Albury, as trails of messy graffiti tags continually pop up on public and private property across the city. While Sunday’s Graffiti Removal Day- a joint venture between local government and Rotary across the state - put a small dent in removing the spray paint and permanent marker mess around Albury, participants are planning to pull out the scrubbing brushes again soon as the problem grows and former methods of removal prove ineffective. With graffiti costing Albury City Council around $90,000 every year, its Youth Development Officer Mandy Wilson said the problem is now worse than ever. Tagging, where vandals leave their mark on as many buildings as possible, is now even hitting private homes and organisations such as Aspire. “On Sunday we cleared a

Graffiti in Macauley Street Albury. 129810 Picture: ADAM WILSON few tags, but it’s never going to resolve the problem, she said. “These people have no regards for people’s property." Businesses and public property are also still heavily hit by tagging. “Some businesses are getting to the point it’s happening so often they aren’t even removing it anymore. Ms Wilson said she doubted a graffiti art wall would help reduce the problem. “The point of ‘tagging’ is to tag as many buildings as they can, so a wall’s not going to make a difference. Albury City Council is reminding business owners to

remove graffiti as soon as possible, and assists in this by offering free graffiti removal kits. They can receive one by reporting the incident to the police, and then taking their police report number to council. The kit contains effective graffiti-removal products, and other equipment like gloves and goggles. A program offering a $2000 reward to dob in a graffiti tagger is also in full swing, and was effective in recently catching the vandal responsible for damaging the Bolt Lane carpark. More information on the Youth Council’s next graffiti removal action plan is expected to be announced soon.

By ERIN SOMERVILLE MENTAL health is an issue that should not be kept in the dark. On Thursday, Border residents made sure that didn’t happen. As part of the Be YOUnique Event for Mental Health Month, around 120 residents came together to walk across the causeway and united in the middle to help raise awareness of mental health. The event was organised by a number of local mental health services, and aimed to involve not just its consumers, but also their family, friends, and all community members. The participants hoped to highlight the prevalence of mental illness in our community, the hope for recovery, and the resources available to assist. Most of all, they hoped to remove the stigma that is still attached to the mental health sector. “Stigma is still a major issue, participant Colin Timmons said. “I am participating in this event because I want to help reduce the disadvantage people

The Be YOUnique cross Border walk to raise awareness about mental health on Thursday was a massive success. 129697 Picture: ADAM WILSON experience who have a mental illness. Mental health month is an opportunity for communities to organise events and promote a special message to encourage our mental well-being. This year’s celebrations are revolving around being ‘unique’, and acknowledging everyone’s individual strengths and qualities to acknowledge our strengths and qualities. A feature of the event was presentation by our Albury’s Sebastien France, who is well known in the community for his contribution to mental health having participated in the River

to Recovery Project, spoken at Australia’s largest mental health conference in Perth this year, and played a part in the Youth Mental Health Forum. With a personal and lived experience of mental illness, Sebastien was an entertaining and engaged guest speaker on the subject of mental health recovery. The walk across the causeway began on both sides of the Border, from the north end of Wodonga’s Sumsion Gardens or the wood-fired pizza ovens in Albury’s Hovell Tree Park. It is hoped more cross-Border events will be held in the future in aid of mental health.

Probing our Anzac past By ERIN SOMERVILLE WHEN the Culcairn RSL SubBranch began compiling information of local servicemen who were involved in World War I for the 100-year anniversary, they had no idea they would uncover so much. As one of the recipients of the Federal Anzac Centenary Local Grants Program, Culcairn RSL is putting their $1564 grant to use by completing a World War I Honour Board of locals who served, as well as a book detailing their service in the war. Since they began their work three months ago, the initial honour roll of 96 local servicemen has grown to 130. It has been a project that has brought generations together, with some older local residents, some who are children or World War I veterans, drawing on their knowledge and memory to help identify some details on the local servicemen’s details, while online archives have also helped fill in the gaps. The branch has even had representatives travel to Canberra to explore archives, historical documents, and the electoral roll to help unravel some mysteries on local servicemen. It had been a challenging project, but one that needed to be done, said local RSL Aux-

Ken and Margaret Gardiner work to track down Culcairn's PIcture: ERIN SOMERVILLE World War I heroes. 129562 illary member Margaret Gardiner. “If we left it much longer we’d have no-one left with any memories at all,” she said. “It’s very important from a historical perspective, and the main aim is accuracy.” A handful of details on 14 servicemen are still missing. The branch is looking for their full name, service number, and photograph, and is

appealing to the public to help provide any information on the following people who served from Culcairn: G. Anderson, A.E. Dunn, D. Fitzgerald, S.J. Gibbons, J. Harvey, H. Howell, S.J. Lewis, A.E. ALBURY Show organisers are hoping a price cut at the gate will help steer the event back to popularity. Gate prices have been slashed from $35 a family to $25 on the Saturday, while Sunday family tickets are now $20, down from $30. Pensioners and children under 16 can get in for $5, while under six-year-olds are free. Albury Show Society secretary Julie Walsh said the price cuts come after listening to local feedback. “We heard a lot of people say it was very expensive and they didn’t get their value for money,” she said. “We are taking that into ac-

count, and have also brought in more free entertianment like a circus, animal nursery and fireworks.” The price cuts are just the first steps the Show Society is taking to help make it bigger and better than ever. “It was becoming a bit tired, so we’re trying to revamp it. “People are getting excited again about it. “We want to get the idea across that this is the Albury Show and it belongs to the Albury people.” This year’s show will be working strongly with local businesses and charities to help create the sense of local ownership. There will be a range of free activities to help provide more

family fun, including motorsports, gate prizes, mini-trot racing from Junee, the Eroni’s Circus, and the international tentpegging competition being held, with the South African team competing. A number of wonderful exhibitions will also be on display, with organisers encouraging local residents to come and discover some of the great local talent. The Albury Show is on 31 October and 1-2 November. Family ticket (two adults and maximum two children 6-15 years) Fri/Sun - $20, Sat $25; adults (16 years of age and over) - Fri/Sat/Sun - $10; child (6 to 15 yrs of age) - Fri/Sat/ Sun - $5; child (under 6 years) free; pensioners - $5.

Best power to weight ratio YAMAHA is pleased to introduce the all-new MT-07, a model specifically designed for the Australian market. The 655cc parallel twin has been puropose-built in Japan to suit our learner market requirements. With heaps of instant torque and the same class leading lightweight as the much-heralded European MT-07, the Aussie version is designed to appeal to experts and new riders alike. MT-07 is the lightest motorcycle in its class, has the most torque, has the best power to weight ratio and is the most fuel efficient. With its high levels of excitement and easy handling nature, MT-07 is an incredible package offering exceptional value for money, making it an attractive proposition for anyone looking to capture the essence of motorcycling. Newer riders will discover that the MT-07 looks good, feels great and is easy to use and fun to ride. Yamaha also believes that because MT-07 sits at the sportier end of the learner-approved spectrum, more experienced bikers will discover a machine that’s built to exceed their expectations. ENGINE New 655cc in line twin When designing the basic architecture of the new engine, our engineers’ aim was to build a responsive and exciting powerplant that would accentuate the emotions experienced by the rider in a variety of situations. This machine is all about highlighting and focusing the pure enjoyment that comes with everyday riding. So rather than simply focusing on achieving maximum power and maximum torque figures, we set out to create an engine which would deliver stronge motion while being very easy and intuitive to ride. The crucial ingredient that makes the new inline twin MT07 engine standout is Yamaha’s Crossplane philosophy. This is an engineering concept that

seeks to enhance power output characteristics, thus providing more predictable and instantaneous engine response, making this compact and lightweight sports bike more accessible and more enjoyable for a wide range of riders. Powerful and compact inline 2 cylinder with a wide usable powerband. The all-new 655cc liquid-cooled 4-stroke inline 2-cylinder DOHC engine features a 270-degree crank layout and includes an exceptionally compact single-axis balancer. The engine has been designed to deliver a high torque level of 57.5Nm at just 4000rpm while being very compact and lightweight at the same time. In terms of performance and specifications, the engine positions itself at the top of its class. Crossplane philosophy for enhanced torque output Crossplane crank philosophy is about the best harmonisation of the engine’s internal forces -the combustion torque (created by the igniting fuel) and the inertial torque (created by the rotating crank and the up and down movement of the pistons). Once these two torque forces are aligned well, the rider gets a more clear feedback on the power delivery and so can control the power output and the rear wheel traction in a more precise and intuitive way. For inline twin cylinder engines the most efficient layout to achieve ‘clean torque’ is to use a 270-degree crank with uneven firing intervals. While the 270-degree crank layout has proven its great rideability already in the TDM900 and the XT1200Z twins, the MT07 adds a lot of excitement by combining its easy to control power delivery with great riding dynamics - such as its class leading low weight - and a great twin cylinder engine character including ‘good vibes’ and a unique deep sound. Lightweight single-axis balance Yamaha’s design team has gone to great lengths to minimise the MT-07’s overall weight by sig-

nificantly reducing the weight of every component. For example, the compact single-axis balancer is one of the lightest of its kind in the market. By reducing the distance between the crank and balancer axis, this new design helps to keep engine dimensions low. Together with the use of rubber engine mounts, the single-axis balancer reduces vibrations for amore enjoyable experience. Offset cylinder design for increased fuel efficiency. Yamaha’s designers have been successful in achieving outstanding levels of fuel efficiency with the new MT-07. One of the key reasons is the reduction in frictional loss within the engine. Compared to a conventional design in which the con rod is slanted when combustion occurs, the offset cylinder design reduces frictional losses between the piston and cylinder, and transmits power more efficiently. Chassis technical highlights: 179kg wet weight (164kg dry weight); Slim frame with 805mm seat height; Slim and compact chassis dimensions for easy agility and manoeuvrability; Compact and upright riding style with freedom to adopt different positions; 41mm front forks with 130mm of stroke and narrow 190mm pitch; 17-inch radial tyres and best in class lightweight 10-spoke cast aluminium wheels; Dual 282mm wave front discs with monocoque 4-pot opposed piston calipers; Characteristic MT-series style Z-shape exhaust/air inlet-type scoops. MT-07 is available with a wide range ofgenuine accessory parts which include a sports/learner kit and a touring kit, flyscreens, radiator side covers, licence plate holder and a full titanium Akropovic exhaust system. Year to end at full throttle HELLO fellow motorcyclists, hasn’t the year flown! Less than two months until Christmas the year’s end is fast approaching and what a hectic and exciting time it is. Phillip Island was an amazing meeting and what a great result for Jack Miller who typified that old Aussie never-giveup attitude we love in all our sportspeople and especially our motorcycle racers. Following a gutsy second in Malaysia let’s all get behind him and hope he can pull off a win at the final round in Valencia – hopefully the points will fall his way and Australia will have another world champion! The motorcycle scene around Albury has been very busy too, with the Border bike fest run and won with some stunning motorcycles, old and new displayed in the show and shine, certainly they are a testament to the love and dedication some people put into their motorcycles. The community mindedness of motorcyclists was also out and about this month with the Classic and Enthusiast motorcycle club running a ride to raise awareness of prostate cancer, a very worthy cause.

The excitement also came this month, with many of the manufacturers announcing exciting new models. Yamaha displayed an allnew fuel injected WR250F and a new entry into the red-hot learner market for next year the YZF-R3 at the Phillip Island bike expo. Suzuki had the all new GSXS-1000, updated GSXRs and a new wire-wheeled 650 V Storm adventure bike on display. Kawasaki has also unveiled online the amazing supercharged Ninja H2 which will come in two models.

One is a racetrack only variant claiming a horsepower output of 300 horsepower which when put into context is more than any of the bikes currently competing in Moto GP. It’s a truly staggering feat in which Kawasaki pooled the resources of all the various arms of Kawasaki heavy industries to produce these bikes. I’d like to sign off with a special thankyou to everyone that supported Iilish (Snoop) Ross and her fund-raising night. It was a fantastic night to see the local motorcycle community come together to support one of their own – well done to everyone concerned.

Displays - ideal starting point IF you’re looking at building your last home to enjoy in retirement, first home or family home, the new Alatalo Bros display home is the perfect starting point. Now ready for inspection at 2 Ivers Place, Leneva, The Acacia boasts 28.3 square metre of attractive, modern and comfortable living, including two living areas, two bathrooms, three bedrooms and a study, plus a double garage and 31.2 square metres of alfresco area. And the best news? Almost everything you see is a standard inclusion, and what’s not will be on the short list given to you upon arrival. “When you walk into this home the doors you see, the architraves you see, the painting finish, fixtures, doorhandles, taps, sinks, baths, ovens, cooktops and range hoods - all the things you see in this home are standard inclusions,” Alatalo Bros Sales manager Michelle Brown said. While still being a visually appealing, modern, energy efficient home, The Acacia is also a physical example of the honest, no-nonsense service you can expect with Alatalo Bros, with no nasty surprises in the standard inclusion area. Since opening the display home in Leneva, the company has found this home has been appealing to the baby boomer clientele. Already the clients that have built this home or are about to build this

plan, have liked the fact that the builder has been flexible with the design to accommodate their wants, needs and or budget.

So far the builder has added a fouth bedroom to the design, as well as removed the study wall to create a large family room, or removed the lounge

the builder can give them the cost of the build when they walk in the door. Two designers are in-house, and are happy to design a plan from scratch, or change the plans around to suit the needs of clients. The Acacia 283 can fit on to lots of differently shaped blocks - it’s not overly wide at the front so it’s versatile to either suit a narrow block or a wider block, and then have enough space to have side access for caravan, boats etc. “For our standard home, it’s up there with quality and versatility. Clients have been happy to find out that upon viewing this home is that the tradies we use on our display home will be taking as much care building their homes, because we have the same tradies build all our homes. If clients are unsure whether they want to buy an established home or build their next home, they could come in and speak to the sales team who can take them through the home, and explain all the details, and highlight all the choices available. They will also help run through the building process, ensuring it will never be as difficult as what you may expect. They can also offer suggestions as to ways of customising the plan to suit individual needs. You can view the Acacia 283 in Leneva between noon to 4pm on weekends or by an appointment during the week.

at the front of the home, just to name a few. The builder has not changed a thing for others as they like the fact they can see what they’re getting and

Tour to a favourite spot By TANIA PHILLIPS ALBURY has always been a favourite spot on the tour circuit for Busby Marou, and this time they are bringing something very special. Off the back of their self-titled debut album reaching certified gold status and follow-up album Farewell Fitzroy debuting at number five on the ARIA Album Charts, Busby Marou are hitting the road once more on a very special duo tour. Having toured extensively with their full band, Busby Marou are going back to their roots and playing this next run of intimate shows as a duo. Tom Busby and Jeremy Marou will perform in a stripped back, acoustic show bringing a whole new dimension to their much-loved catalogue. Tom Busby said they were looking forward to playing just as an acoustic duo for the first time in a very long time to their audiences. He said after touring relentlessly in recent times this would be a great way to make it fun for both the duo and for the audience. To coincide with this tour, Busby Marou have released Farewell Fitzroy: Days of Gold Edition, a special reissue of their second album, on 18 October. This new addition features the 12 original tracks from Farewell Fitzroy along with five additional tracks including brand new single ‘Days of Gold’.

Busby Marou. Other new tracks include acoustic versions of ‘Heard It All Before’ and ‘Widow’, as well as a new version of ‘Biding My Time’ with guest vocalist, Nat Dunn. The five new tracks have also be made available as the Days Of Gold EP on iTunes for fans who have already purchased Farewell Fitzroy. And according to Tom, it will give

fans a taste of what is to come on this tour. Joining the boys on the road are two amazing support acts, UK singer songwriter Fiona Bevan and Australian hot property, Zeek Power. Who: Busby Marou Where: SSA Club, Albury When: Friday, 14 November.

IN A recent run of films filled with action, heroes, and villains, it’s refreshing to come across Fury. This World War II film, as straight-forward and basic as its plot may be, explores the many shades of grey that colour war, and challenges the eternal concept of good and bad. We find the cast on the fields of Germany, in 1945, with Allied forces making their way into Germany, liberating town after town. Fresh from a battle that saw many tanks become coffins, the tank Fury returns with its team of five now down to four. The team in Fury have been battling out World War II together, and have formed a solid brotherhood in the claustrophobic confines of their tank since they began as a team together when the fight-

ing began in Africa. The eccentric crew comprises of Boyd Swan (Shia LaBeouf) as the main gunner, driver Trini Garcia (Michael Pena), loader Grady Travis (Jon Bernthal), and its hardened leader Don Collier (Brad Pitt).Their strong team gets a shake-up though when their trusty gunner is killed, and is replaced by the baby-faced Normal Ellis (Logan Lerman), who has only trained as a speed typist. When Norman joins the team, his innocent ways and hard time conditioning himself to the tough reality of war makes the Fury team reflect on their hardened ways. As the team eventually bond, they come across the ultimate challenge of wiping out a battalion of SS. It’s a challenge they can’t refuse, even if it means they might not see the end of the

war and it means bringing their good luck with Fury to an end. This film is what it is. There are no quirky twists, romantic subplots, or any non-necessities in this film and that perhaps is one of its strengths. It is a brutal and often downright grisly film, and portrays that not all war deaths are heroic, pretty, or necessary. The amount of filming done in the confines of the tank gives the audience an appreciation of the cramped and vulnerable role tank teams played in the war, often acting as sitting ducks. It also creates an effective sense of claustrophobia. For a straight-forward, tense war film, you can’t beat Fury, now showing at Regent Cinemas. - Erin Somerville

Record entries for showcase of art and craft TWENTY-EIGHT years ago, Margaret Grigsby thought it would be a good idea to showcase the arts and crafts sector of the Border. Now almost three decades later, she is once again ramping up preparations for this year’s Albury Wodonga Doll, Bear and Hobby Show. While the show has been passed through the hands of many organisations over the years, its president

Ms Grigsby has stuck by it, and the dedication has paid off. In a sign that the event is getting bigger and better than ever, a record number of 170 entries helped make the show a spectacular event, with new sections such as quilt making, patchwork, and embriodery drawing numbers from across the region. “Last year, we completely revamped it,” Ms Grigsby said.

“We resurrected it to a two-day show, and it was a success.” It takes a lot of hard work to create an award-winning doll or teddybear, with some taking up to a year to complete. Judges will look for a variety of factors when judging entries, including the teddy-bears’ noses, embroidery, glass eyes, and dolls’ paintwork and costumes.

This year the show will be raising money for local causes, including Age Concern Albury Wodonga, and the craft-based Angel Baby Nappies and Knitted Knockers. The showcase is on 29 and 30 November from 10am to 4pm at the Mirambeena Community Centre, North Albury. Admission is $5 for adults, $2 for children, and free for those under three years old.

Jim and Julie Carroll and their two sons Jacob and Joel Carroll. 129155 and Julie were standouts in their nominated categories and were deserving of their wins. “I am very proud to award Jim and Julie with these two awards. Their continued hardwork and dedication to building quality homes is inspiring and they are deserving winners,” Michael said. Jim, Julie and their team were delighted to be recognised at the annual Hotondo Homes’ national conference.

Regional Victoria is staying affordable RISING Melbourne house prices have prompted many first homebuyers and families on a budget to consider the advantages of regional Victoria. While prices have increased in some regional areas, particularly the major centres and towns within close commuting distance of Melbourne, a number of affordable properties can be found in regions that offer quality services and lifestyle attractions. The latest REIV median house price data for the September quarter brought good news for buyers looking outside of Melbourne. The regional median house price now stands at $324,000 - around 50 per cent lower than the current Melbourne house price median which makes purchasing a property well within the reach of buyers on a tighter budget. Capital growth figures for the 12 months to 30 September also illustrate that despite some fluctuations in the market, property can deliver a solid long-term investment. Homes in regional Victoria showed an overall 4.5 per cent increase in value

over the year, with growth at more than 25 per cent in some parts of the state. Areas in particular that experienced exceptional growth included the Colac-Otway region (with 9.4 per cent growth in the September quarter) and Wangaratta (with a rise of 11.5 per cent in the past three months). Seasonality also plays a strong factor in regional sales, with the median house price in the Alpine region up 10.2 per cent in the September quarter - coinciding with the peak ski season which also represents the best time of year for sellers. Areas with good local infrastructure continue to attract regional buyers who seek lifestyle opportunities in well-serviced locations. Both Benalla and the Indigo region experienced smaller growth of around three per cent in the last quarter, but grew by double digits in the past 12 months - indicating that Victoria’s regional property market still offers an affordable entry point while delivering considerable returns over a sustained period.

Exploring the Indigenous THERE was a lot of activity going on at Albury’s Jelbart Park last week. The NAIDOC Gala Event saw 600 primary students from 11 local schools, and over 80 high school students from four local high schools show off their rugby league skills and celebrate Indigenous culture. "The event was part of a partnership between a large group of community organisations, with the main focus being on celebrating NAIDOC and its significance in our local community," NRL South West NSW Game Development Officer Dean Whymark said. It wasn’t just all about kicking the footy around, though. The students explore a range of activities including traditional Aboriginal games, Aboriginal dance and Aboriginal art. It is expected to become one of the feature events on the NAIDOC calendar for schools in the Albury region, and it is a unique opportunity to bring schools together.

Local Sport Hard-fought rivals battle DEFENDING champions Albury Golf Club narrowly went down to rivals Thurgoona in the MDGA scratch pennant on Sunday. The rivalry was strong throughout the day with Thurgoona walking away with a 4-3 game lead. Thurgoona pennant team captain Simon Hoppe said his team was focused right throughout the day before taking the hard-fought title. “In the last match it came down to the 18th hole,” he said. “The team played really well and were really determined.”

While at times it looked like Albury had Thurgoona pinned, a number of comebacks late on the course saw some surprise victories. “A couple who played were down after the ninth hole and came back to win,” Hoppe said. The victors must now take on Albury at their home ground next weekend. It’s expected to be another hard-fought event but Hoppe said he has confidence in his team. “It will be another close match,” he said. “We are just going to put on our same strong team.”

Captain continues to lead the way, for second week By JAMES MCNEIL FOR the second week in a row Albury Cricket Club captain Kade Brown has produced some individual brilliance and has put his team in a strong position in its Cricket Albury Wodonga provincial A Grade match against New City at Bilson Park. Albury is now well-placed to pick up its first win of the season with Brown finishing the day with 7/37 from 15.1 overs. It was not only an Albury Cricket Club first grade record but also Brown’s career best figures. The skipper’s spell was the vital component in keeping New City to 194 with Hayden Wishart following up his 51 not out last week to post 94 while Darcy I’Anson, 40, was the only other batsmen to shine. Brown’s work has been partially undone as Albury slipped to 2/29 after losing Benjamin Whiteside and Tom Marsland who were both bowled by Darcy I’Anson. The talented bowler continued his brilliant early season form after taking six wickets last week against Tallangatta. Albury will be looking for runs from Wells, Dixon and Brown through the middle to chase down New City’s total. At Kelly Park, Belvoir has posted 219 against Lavington thanks to a sparkling 84 from Drew Cameron. Cameron looked set to provide a long day in the field for Lavington until he was dismissed for 84, with the team total on 113, by Tom Hargreave. Belvoir then tumbled to be all out for 219 with

Mick Russell (40), the only other player to make more than 20. Lavington’s bowlers shared the wickets among them with Bryce Swift and Michael Galvin each taking two apiece. Lavington will be without Sam Harris for the run chase and will hope to get plenty of runs out of Sam O’Connor and Andrew Mackinlay to get them home. Tallangatta’s home ground of Rowen Park is generally a place all batsmen love to visit, however Saturday proved an exception with 17 wickets falling in a day’s play in the match against North Albury. The Bushies were bundled out for 147 without any of their players passing 25. Robert Hartnett followed his 3/58 off 20 last week to take 3/52 off 15.3 this week while Brandon Purtell and Paddy Murray chipped in with two wickets each. In reply the visitors slumped to 7/87 overnight and will need something special to get them home this coming weekend. David Farrell compiled 49 as a collapse of 3/6 in the last few overs handed the ascendency to Tallangatta. Sam Stephens picked up 3/26 off 10 overs and was ably supported by Joshua Bousfield and Nathan Thompson who snared two wickets each. In the replay of last year’s washed out grand final, Wodonga has compiled 243 at Les Cheesley Oval against St Pats. Wodonga’s three big names Trent Ball (46), James Tonkin (45) and Robbie Jackson (65) all

produced good starts to provide Wodonga with a competitive total, with Jackson’s score his third over 50 in the three rounds. Mark Butters was miserly for St Pats picking up 2/37 off 18 with the key wickets of Tonkin and Jackson but Rutherglen recruit Jon Shaw was the pick of the bowlers producing a 25 over effort that resulted in figures of 4/82. It will take a quality display of batting from St Pats to chase down Wodonga’s total but on a good Les Cheesley wicket and without Leigh Collins, Leo McGhee and Jack Robinson the Bulldogs might have to work hard to defend their score. East Albury has taken the honours on day one at Alexandra Park, dismissing the Wodonga Raiders for 171. Cameron White was the chief destroyer taking 4/43 off 13.5 overs backed up by Kris Milosta who picked up 2/13 off 10 while 17-year-old James Browning picked up 1/9 off five. Josh Warren-Marmo was the best for the Raiders making 59 while youngster Liam Hocking made 28. In reply the Crows were 0/69 with 16-yearold Caleb Barras not out 36 and 17-year-old Nick Hanlon on 32. Once again this round looks likely to produce some close run chases and some tight finishes showing the evenness throughout the competition. In representative cricket the CAW Colts (u/23) took on Murray Valley Cricket Association and produced a convincing win.

CAW made 268 with Drew Cameron top scoring with 99. In reply Dave Tassell took four wickets while Chris Bridle, Sam Stephens and Zac Simmonds took two each in the clinical win.
