Wyndham has 108 fewer frontline police o cers than the City of Greater Geelong, despite the cities having similar populations. With law and order likely to be among the key issues for voters at next month’s state election, gures from the Police Association reveal Wyndham has 88 frontline o cers, compared with Geelong’s 196 – or 45 per 100,000 people, which is almost half Geelong’s
rate of 86 per 100,000 people. is is despite Geelong’s population sitting at about 225,000 – 25,000 above Wyndham’s estimated 200,000 residents.
As previously reported by Star Weekly, Wyndham has the lowest police-to-population ratio in Victoria. e latest gures add fuel to community concerns over the lack of police numbers.
A community rally last month heard Wyndham was experiencing a policing “crisis”
and desperately required more o cers as well as a redeveloped Werribee station and new stations at Point Cook and Wyndham Vale. Police Association secretary Ron Iddles told the rally Wyndham’s crime rate went up 7.5 per cent in 2013-14 because there were not enough police on the streets.
“ e current policing model is to have an average of 102 police per 100,000 people.
Wyndham has 45 per 100,000 people – it’s a disgrace,” he said.
Wyndham’s Police Association delegate, Brendan O’Mahoney, said that, on average, there were fewer front-line police on duty at Werribee now than in the late 1970s and early ’80s.
Detective Senior Constable O’Mahoney said the city’s police o cers were regularly working double shi s and coming in while on leave to cover for sick or burnt-out colleagues.
“It isn’t fair on them or the people of Wyndham,” he told the rally.

Harrison ward councillors Glenn Goodfellow and Adele Hegedich have con rmed their interest in becoming Wyndham’s next mayor. Star Weekly understands at least two other councillors are considering putting their hands up for the council’s top job at the vote on October 29.
A volunteer with Truganina CFA, Cr Goodfellow, who was rst elected in 2008 and served as deputy mayor in 2011-12, said
it was the right time for him to contest the mayoralty.
“I’ve been on council for coming up to six years and I think it’s the right time to give it a go,” he said. “It will be up to my colleagues whether they think I should get it.”
A quali ed lawyer, Cr Hegedich, who was elected in 2009 as a result of a countback a er Cr Marie Brittan stepped down, said she wanted to bring a youthful edge to the job.
“I think I can bring intelligence, passion and youthfulness to the role,” she said.
“ e community needs to understand the role of a councillor is not [just] about people who are retired – it can be done by young people.”
Current mayor Bob Fairclough said he was “not in a position to comment” on whether he would stand for another term, while fellow Harrison ward councillor Intaj Khan said he wasn’t considering a tilt this year.

Wyndham Community Arts Alliance fears it will be le homeless when its Laverton North lease expires in January.
e alliance, which has about 200 members, provides local artists, writers and theatre and community groups with studios and meeting spaces at its Sayers Road site.
It has been leasing the space, known as Wyndham Artworks, from the council for 10 years,butitsleaseexpiresonJanuary31andthe council is yet to o er a new lease or nd new premises.
Wyndham council chief executive Kerry ompson said the group’s lease included a
‘holding over’ clause, allowing it to remain at Wyndham Artworks on a month-by-month basis. But alliance treasurer and business co-ordinator Wolf Heidecker said the group was under the impression there was no such clause in its lease.
Mr Heidecker said the alliance could not accept a month-by-month lease because it legally had to provide its artists with licences for studios for a minimum of three months.
“It is really a matter of urgency,” he said. “We need a commitment and a guarantee that we can stay on here and that the council will not tear up the contract until a new space is found.”

Alliance president Dani Acciarito said it could be forced to close if the council could not guarantee a future home. She said loss of the alliance would leave local artists and community groups nowhere to go.
“If we close, the only local group showcasing local artists will be Rotary,” Ms Acciarito said.

An innovative partnership between two Wyndham schools is being hailed as the future for education of children with intellectual disabilities.
Last Friday, a new campus of specialist school Warringa Park School opened at e Grange P-12 College in Hoppers Crossing to provide years 9 and 10 students with a broader educational experience.
Both schools believe the collaboration could become a model for other schools across the state.
While the Warringa Park students have separate classrooms and o ce and their own multi-purpose room, they wear e Grange uniform.
Warringa Park School acting principal Marie Hayes said the partnership would provideexcitingopportunitiesforstudentsand teachers to share resources.
“We’re always looking for ways to be more
inclusive and o er di erent pathways for our students,” she said. “Our students started at this campus earlier in the year and they’ve already grown enormously.
“ ere’s typically a level of disengagement with years 9 and 10 students and our program aims to be innovative and build on their strengths and interests.
“As well as di erent learning opportunities, they’realsoexpandingtheirfriendshipgroups.”
e Grange P-12 College principal David Smillie said the close working relationship between the schools was already paying dividends.

“Students and teachers are bene ting from the shared learning. at’s been one of the real strengths and a real positive.”

Point Cook residents are concerned the state government is not doing enough to plan for the future education of children a er it failed to set aside land for a second senior secondary school in the suburb.
eareaishometothreegovernmentprepto year 9 schools, with a fourth expected to open in 2017 or 2018. But there is only one school providing years 10 to 12.
Parents want the government to secure a site for another senior school to ensure that

students can nish their education at Point Cook.
Point Cook Action Group president Tony Hooper said parents were concerned about what would happen to their children once they nish year 9. “ erehasbeenveryshort-sightedplanning,” hesaid.“Alotofpeopleareconcernedthatland isn’t being set aside.
“Land has been sitting there for two to three years for the new prep to year 9 school. Where is the land for a years 10 to 12 school going to come from?

“It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see that if you are building all these prep to year 9 schools in the area you need to cover years 10 to 12 in a bigger capacity.”
e action group’s concerns follow a government call for expressions of interest from companies keen to nance, build and maintain the next prep to year 9 school. It will be one of 13 growth-area schools to be built under a public-private partnership.
Treasurer Michael O’Brien said the successful consortiums would maintain the schools for 25 years.
“ is approach means teachers and principals can focus on providing Victorian children with the best education possible, rather than painting walls and xing broken windows,” he said.
Education Minister Martin Dixon has previously said Point Cook would not get more years 10 to 12 schools until population growth calls for them, adding that the area was well served by existing schools. “We’re monitoring all the time with the local council, with developers, with our existing schools and … the Australian Bureau of Statistics,” he said.

Little River parents are hoping the federal government will overturn its decision to stop funding an out-of-hours care program at the town’s primary school.
As reported by Star Weekly, the school has been told that funding for its out-of-hours care program will cease early next year because 2011 census data showed the town was in a major city (Geelong).
e town has previously been classi ed as “inner regional”, allowing the school to access $16,000 in funding.
e before-and-a er school care service is used by 39 of the school’s 77 families.
e school fears that without federal funding, the program will close, leaving 57 children without care.
Concerned parents met Lalor MP Joanne Ryan and opposition assistant education spokeswoman Amanda Rishworth last Friday to air their concerns.
Ms Ryan said the government had the ability to waive the criteria that led to the funding cancellation, allowing the care program to continue.
She said many of the parents worked in Melbourne or Geelong and relied on the program to provide their children with a safe place to go before or a er school.
Without it, some parents would be forced to send their children to schools in Wyndham or Geelong, Ms Ryan said.
“If 10 children were to leave the school, a teacher could be out of a job.”
Ms Ryan said a petition calling for the decision to be reversed had 650 signatures and would be tabled in Parliament.
Ms Rishworth said she would raise the issue with Assistant Education Minister Sussan Ley.

“Anyone who drives out [to Little River] can see that it’s not a major city and that there are no other options for parents,” she said.
“For some families, losing the program will be the di erence between parents studying or looking a er their children, or going back to work or not. While the program was assisting families it was also keeping kids safe.”
e Education Department said it had used census data to review all childcare services receiving community support program funding and found Little River Primary School was no longer eligible under the funding guidelines. edepartmentsaidfundingwouldcontinue until early February.

Kevin Hillier says sorry to a living, breathing Apex club
Firstly, an apology to president Matthew O’Donnell and Hoppers Crossing Apex Club, which I killed o in this column last week. I should have written that Werribee Apex Club is handing in its charter, as Hoppers is alive and well and has been since 1979. I did receive some feedback from service club members who thought I was deriding their worth to the community. at’s so inaccurate. I don’t question the value and the good that service clubs do overall for the community, but I do question the personal motivation of some members who I believe, as I wrote, use this community facade for personal business opportunities. at’s something I nd not in the spirit of the organisations. You only have to go for a three or four kilometre walk almost anywhere in Wyndham and you’ll come across some facility that has been made possible by the work and generosity of Rotary, Lions or Apex. I fear, though, that the nature and fabric of these clubs is being eroded and they face a bleak future in their intended state and role in the community. Werribee Apex is still holding
its farewell dinner this Saturday night at the Hoppers Crossing Sports Club. Call Darren for details on 0413607645.
Imust say I’m disappointed by the lack of grunt shown by our council in this state election window. We need them all to be out and about, making sure we get what we need. ere have been a few council-generated press releases and a few photo opportunities, but very little that has actually made a di erence. I can only imagine what a di erence all our councillors could make if they actually united to serve their constituents. Pick an issue like roads and go and belt a few heads. Stop hiding behind online petitions and actually put your heads on the block. Could it ever happen? I doubt it but am willing to be proved wrong.

Prominent Melbourne imam Sheikh Issa Mussewantstohelpthecommunitylearnmore about the Muslims who call Wyndham home.
As imam at Hoppers Crossing’s Virgin Mary Mosque, Sheikh Issa believes it is important to challenge misconceptions about Islam and help people understand what happens at a mosque.
As such, the Werribee Islamic Centre (WIC) will open the mosque to the public on Saturday.
“We all belong to this country. Given the current crisis, we think it is important to say to people, ‘Don’t target others’. No matter what happens 20,000 or 30,000 miles away, we are all in one boat in this country,” the sheikh said.
During the open day, there will be mosque tours with guides to answer people’s questions. ere will also be a barbecue and children’s activities.
e Virgin Mary Mosque is one of only two mosques in Victoria taking part in the national open day. It is home to Victoria’s only multi-ethnic congregation, welcoming people from Africa, Pakistan, the Middle East, Morocco, Sri Lanka, Albania, India, Europe and Bangladesh.
WIC vice-president Rifai Raheem said the centre was “honoured” to welcome the community into its mosque, which has been at its Hogans Road site for about 10 years and has a growing congregation, now about 500 people.

River crossing ‘big picture’ call
[Re: End rail crossing crush, Star Weekly, October 15] This is critical for the burgeoning population of Wyndham, given the ongoing over-development of the area. Wyndham is effectively dissected by the railway crossings causing regular gridlock and major delays, along with the danger posed to students at surrounding schools, commuters arriving or leaving the station and the delays for emergency services.
The necessity for a second river crossing needs to be part of the big picture, along with the removal of the railway crossings. CeeMee, via web
There would not be any accidents if people obeyed the crossing bells and closed gates. The lights at the Hoppers Crossing level crossing seem to have sorted out the ‘cowboy’ drivers crashing into trains, as people seem to obey traf c lights yet not the bells. People also have the option to go via the underpass and miss the level crossings.

An exhausting parking situation
[Re: ‘Parking a pain in the pocket, Star Weekly, October 8] I’m not surprised council is issuing nes. I am surprised that they continue to do nothing about the problem. As a shift worker, it’s horrendous trying to get a park anywhere near a station, let alone at the station!
Why doesn’t the bus timetable run to the train timetable?
It makes me angry that the 9-to-5ers use the carpark all day when they could walk or catch a bus. It’s people like myself that suffer, having to walk half an hour some days from my roadside car park to a station,

LOCATION:
working 10 to 12-hour days, getting home about 1am, and then having to walk back to my car!
I’ve even bought a parkiteer pass, but that’s full as well (they should not have sold me a pass!) – so that isn’t an option, either. I’ve contacted the council repeatedly on the issue of the carpark that’s empty all day and all night, next to the Target complex, with a view to making that station parking – but they will not respond. I’m guessing Wyndham chief executive Kerry Thompson has her own designated car park by her of ce door and is not trying too hard for a solution.

Puppy farms ‘cruel’
[Re: ‘Little River puppy farm owner to be prosecuted after raid’, Online, October 14]
This is a disgrace! The business should be shut forever. The mass production of puppies in an already saturated market must end. These puppy farms are adding to death row numbers. Dogs are abandoned each year and left homeless. How cruel are these people to our “best friends” to treat them like puppy machines?
Puppies are being churned out as shelf items for pet shops. The public should avoid buying them there.

Drivers and pedestrians are dicing with death at the Old Geelong Road level crossing, with six near-misses reported since May last year.
Yet neither Labor nor the Coalition has committed to removing the level crossings.
Labor has included the Werribee and Cherry streets crossings on its list of the 50 it has pledged to remove if it wins the state election. eCoalitionhasnotcommittedtoremoving any level crossings on the Werribee line, yet.
As part of Wyndham council’s anticongestion campaign, it has urged both parties to remove all level crossings across the city.
As reported by Star Weekly on October 15, Suzanne Cory High School teacher Nick Cumminssaidtheschoolwasconcernedforthe safety of 600 students who use the Old Geelong Road level crossing regularly. He described the crossing as “an accident waiting to happen”.
MayorBobFaircloughsaidremovingtheOld Geelong Road level crossing was a priority as it was already well beyond its capacity.
Tarneit MP and opposition treasury spokesman Tim Pallas said Labor’s priority list of dangerous level crossings was developed based on information from the RACV and the Australian Level Crossing Assessment Model.
“Fatalities have occurred at both the Cherry and Werribee-Cottrell streets crossings, and they have been given priority,” he said.
e most recent level crossing fatality in Wyndham was at Cherry Street in May 2012. However, gures from Transport Safety Victoria reveal there have been only two nearmisses here involving a person or vehicle since May last year.
RACV roads and tra c manager Dave Jones said removing level crossings reduced the need for people to take unnecessary risks.

One of Khurram Jahanghir Khan’s students once asked him why he volunteered so much of his time.
His reply was simple: “ ere are 60 minutes in every hour and 24 hours in every day and I don’t want to waste a single minute or breath.”
Since arriving with his family from Pakistan only 18 months ago, the 19-year-old has sel essly devoted himself to the community.
A rst-year biomedicine student at the University of Melbourne, Khurram volunteers as a tutor co-ordinator at the Sudanese AustralianIntegratedLearningProgram, where he teaches high school science subjects using creative activities and modern technology.

e Werribee resident also helps students from disadvantaged backgrounds with their VCE studies and has helped a range of charity organisations, including Vinnies and Amnesty International, while he’s also a member of the Rotary Club of Hoppers Crossing.
Khurram’s extraordinary contribution to society was recognised last week, when Premier Denis Napthine named him as the Duke of Edinburgh Awards’ Volunteer of the Year.
“It[theaward]wasacompleteshock,”hesaid.
“As a tutor, I try to keep students engaged by helping them with their English and their science subjects. Coming from a migrant background myself, I can share my experiences because I’ve faced the same hurdles they have.”
Khurram was one of seven Victorians to be recognised at the award ceremony, which

highlighted and celebrated some of the outstanding achievements made by volunteers across Victoria.
“I believe we all have a responsibility to give back to the community, but volunteering starts at home then within your neighbourhood and then your city,” he said.
“ e simplest form of charity is smiling. But even a smile has the power to change lives.”
Whether through volunteering or pursuing his dream to be a doctor specialising in immunology, Khurram wants to change lives.
“Medicine provides an opportunity to help people in so many ways,” he said.
“As a doctor, you’re connected to the community and you can help people understand their problems and help cure and prevent diseases. You can make a di erence.”

I was very pleased to present 17 community members with a Lalor Heroes awards last week.
We are fortunate that our community has so many locals who give so generously of their time.
Having grown up in this community, I know first-hand the value of those who go the extra mile, who take a personal passion and build from it to a shared passion, in some cases an organisation that adds to the lives of our residents and the fabric of our community
Becoming the Member for Lalor has increased my knowledge and understanding of those givers in our community. Of the incredible breadth and depth of community activity that is supported by these passionate people. The many hundreds who give of themselves to create interest in worthwhile pursuits that ultimately create our great community spirit.
It is important to recognise those that value the community spirit enough to make a considerable contribution.
That’s why I decided to initiate the Lalor Heroes volunteer awards.
I encourage the community to start thinking about worthy recipients for next year’s presentation and also about nominating a local for the Australia Day and Queens Birthday Honours.
Look out for the full feature on the individual recipients in next week’s paper.
Yours sincerely

to be improved, especially at Cherry Street, along with our infrastructure. I’d like to see Werribee Plaza nished and more artwork around to create some fun. I love the platypus dancers, dogs and family in Watton Street. It would be great to have co ee shops along the river, too.
What’s your favourite eatery? I’m out a lot so I love being at home with friends gossiping.
I o en get cakes from Mondell’s and cream sponges from Country Loaf to share with them or make my own Swedish cinnamon buns.
How do you spend your downtime? I enjoy spending time with my grandchildren, sometimes making cakes with them, and card-making.
I also like to visit Werribee Park rose garden and I like to relax in our own garden with a co ee.

Dear Karen, I found the perfect solution for mum and dad. It’s called supportive living and is unique in Victoria. It gives the option that allows people to choose their own care in a place and at a time that’s both convenient and affordable. Even meals are cooked fresh on site.

Seniors living alone in their homes can feel safer knowing that police are keeping watch, thanks to a new scheme.
The Wyndham Seniors Register is designed to make senior citizens living in their own homes feel safer.
The register, a partnership between the City of Wyndham and Werribee police, aims to give elderly residents, their relatives and friends peace of mind knowing that the police are looking out for their welfare.

An elderly resident’s details will be entered on a con dential computer database and they will be contacted regularly by phone to check their welfare.
Records will not be made available to anyone but police, ambulance or the re brigade in the event of an emergency.

Surveys have shown that older people are far less likely than younger people to be victims of serious crime. But many elderly people are fearful of such crime and that fear can have an adverse effect on their quality of life.
It is fear that the police at Werribee are endeavoring to minimise through the Wyndham seniors register.
If you are a senior citizen (above 65 years) residing within Wyndham and would like to be on the register, complete an application form online, or have one sent out then return it to: Werribee Police Station, 131 Princes Highway, Werribee 3030; or Wyndham North Police Station, 610 Sayers Road, Tarneit 3029. For details about the Wyndham Seniors Register, call 9742 9497

Living zones are carpeted theatre/rumpus and lounge rooms, and a tiled family-meals area around a kitchen with stone benchtops, large pantry and European appliances. A stylish, enclosed outdoor room has a gas log re set within a stacked-stone feature wall and integrates well with indoors. Home buyers looking for a house that’s built by a well-known building company may nd this Porter Davis residence ends their search. With room for a large family, the house on 600 square metres has ample space for parents and kids to have their own domains. The ve-star energy-rated house has four bedrooms, including the main with walk-in wardrobe and en suite which has a twin-basin vanity unit and large shower. Three living zones include a lounge room, family-meals space with gas log re, and a rumpus room. The spaciousness continues in a large kitchen which has a walk-in pantry, stone benchtops, glass splashbacks and stainless-steel appliances, including a dishwasher. Zoned refrigerated cooling and ducted heating are included. An undercover area, 10 solar panels, a 3000-litre water tank, garden shed, sprinkler system, landscaped gardens, Colorbond fences and a double garage with internal access are other features.

CROSSING 75 Wilmington Avenue, 3029
Harcourts Wyndham City: 9741
Facing the rising sun, this handsome double storey on 611 square metres (in the ‘Paris quarter’ of the boulevard) has recently received a complete update to put out the welcome mat for new owners. It’s the oorboards, tasteful feature walls, subtle classic wallpaper, timeless window dressings, new carpets and paintwork, harmonious colour combos and new light ttings that deliver an overall elegance to what is essentially a house built for family enjoyment. Three big bedrooms, main bathroom and a study (or potential fourth bedroom) are upstairs and link with a large living area, perfect as a kids’ lounge. The main bedroom has a walk-in robe and en suite, and there’s a second study and powder room downstairs. Living areas include a classy lounge-dining room, and a family-meals area around a kitchen with stainless-steel appliances. Other features are ducted heating, evaporative cooling, an outdoor entertainment zone and a remote-controlled double garage.
Within a short walk of Werribee Plaza, this well-established brick veneer has everything expected by today’s family buyers, including three bedrooms, two living rooms and a study set up with great built-in shelving and desk. The main bedroom has a walk-in robe and en suite, and another bedroom decked out in pink stripes will surely win the heart of a girl-child. The lounge room, or adult retreat, is carpeted while the family-meals-kitchen zone has oorboards. The kitchen has a pantry, breakfast bench, wall oven and gas cooktop. A covered pergola above grey-coloured concrete links with a backyard set up with a young family in mind: lots of lawn, a timber cubby house and mulched playground area. Close to schools and transport, the Cambridge estate property also has ducted heating, air-conditioning and a double garage with backyard access.

422
It’s the timber bollards arranged on garden-edged synthetic grass that provide the rst indication of a clever chippie/ designer putting his stamp on this house; then it’s the timber fascias and the rendered and timber section de ning the porch entry. It’s this type of detail that distinguishes the house from a standard build, adding personality and air – and it doesn’t nish here.
Elements such as the addition of modern dado rails bisecting two-tone paintwork, painted bulkheads and creative outdoor structures up the appeal factor.
Add in the harmonious grey and off-white colour palette, stylish bathroom
updates and immaculate surrounds and this property sings a catchy tune.
Entry is into a slate-tiled hallway which has, on the right, the main bedroom with soft-green carpet, walk-in wardrobe and an en suite with semi-recessed square basin set in a stone-topped vanity unit. Opposite, there’s an open carpeted study with timber blinds, a window dressing used throughout. The hallway then bisects an open lounge room with views on one side of the outdoor entertainment area and, on the other, a mosaic-tiled screen behind a tasteful water feature.
Next it’s the large living hub where slate oor tiles continue and the meals zone
sits within a wide bay window. The kitchen has blonde timber-laminate cupboards, walk-in pantry, wall oven, gas cooktop and dishwasher. The nearby laundry has lots of storage and a workbench.
Other bedrooms have robes and one is beautifully decorated for a young girl – a lick of paint will change that if needed. The main bathroom close by has an oval bath and a 2pac vanity unit topped with soft-grey stone; the toilet is separate.
A huge pergola with industrial-style exposed joists sits above brick paving and houses a great little glass and timber bar and tropical plantings in pebbled garden beds. There’s also a spot to park a boat
which can come through the back roller door of the remote-controlled double garage (internal access).
Next to the pergola, there’s a fantastic shelter made with quality shadecloth framed in timber geometric shapes.
In a big backyard edged with cottage gardens, there’s a large Colorbond shed with power, sink, xed workbenches and a storeroom with shelves; and a gorgeous, brightly painted cubby house.
Ducted heating and cooling and a water tank are nal notes on a page prospective buyers should read.

To James Antonio & the directors of YPA.
We personally would like to thank you James & Kirsty on the sale of our home 15 Mackay Rd,WyndhamVale. We would particularly like to thank Kirsty Cunningham and the professional way that Kirsty presented herself on every occasion. We had our house with another organisation in which almost word go we were not happy with the way they promoted themselves and their company. Changing toYPA we were impressed instantly on the professionalism of the company, dealing with Kirsty was awesome, Kirsty always was happy, bubbly and smiling and even those simple things can show how dedicated employees love working for their company and from a buyer or seller point of view that alone makes you realise you made the right choice. Kirsty is a real asset for your business. I lastly would recommendYPA to anyone, as professionalism and determination to get the results is what a buyer and seller requires and withYPA that is exactly what you get! Thank you for selling our house!

There’s plenty to think about for buyers purchasing their rst home, and the process can often prove arduous and stressful. But there are ways for rst-time buyers to avoid becoming overwhelmed and making decisions later regretted. It comes down to doing your research and asking yourself some fundamental questions:
What do you need?
Know exactly the type of property you need to purchase, and weigh-up the reasons for purchasing it, such as investment, location, price, oor plan, room to extend, etc. Knowing your needs allows you to streamline your property search, shortening the time spent. Buyers can also tell agencies what they need and have the latter do some searching around - buyer’s agents, for example. Be realistic. A growing family can’t live in a small apartment forever. A single person generally doesn’t need a high-maintenance block of land. Figure out the style of property that best suits your
lifestyle. Bigger or newer is not always better.
What about the area?
Is the property handy to work or lifestyle perks such as a beach, or walking tracks? Is there a railway station nearby? Is the council planning for services upgrades? Are things like crime and pollution driving residents away? Understand the demographics of the area and spend time inspecting changing traf c conditions on the street you intend to buy on.
What’s your personal situation?
While we can’t see into the future, it’s important to plan for hurdles along the way, especially nancial. Have a buffer account for unexpected costs, such as increases in council and strata fees and interest rates. Knowing your limits is the key to a successful rst home purchase.

eLanghamMelbourneistheperfectantidote for any Melburnian needing a quick break. eLangham,onSouthbank, pridesitselfon o ering modern yet timeless elegance.
It’sthiswinningmixthathasledmetoreturn countless times for a luxurious overnight stay or indulgent weekend away.
is time around we booked the ‘Away with the Fairies’ package, which included overnight accommodation for two, a full bu et dinner at Melba and breakfast the next morning, a late checkout of 2pm, and valet parking.
We stayed in a Grand River Room on the 18th oor with a great view of the Yarra River and Flinders Street Station.
e room itself is simply furnished with a king-size Langham ‘Blissful’ bed, desk and armchair with Ottoman.
But it’s the small touches – from the luxury Chuan Spa amenity products in the bathroom and the copy of Alice in Wonderland in the bedside table drawer to the bottle of water placed in your car at checkout – that impress.
e marble bathroom is comfortably set out and includes a separate shower and deep bathtub. If you’re celebrating a birthday or anniversary, be sure to let them know when you book and you will be rewarded with a slice of chocolate cake on arrival and a handwritten note congratulating you on your milestone.
When dining at Melba, make sure you come with an appetite.
e bu et o ers a wide range of food stations with an international cuisine and serves up fresh seafood, cooked-to-order pasta, specially-made naan bread, a delicious array of dumplings, and desserts to die for.

My personal favourites included sushi made to order, naan bread with M&Ms, Peking duck pancakes and churros with a chocolate dipping sauce. To drink, try the apple crumbletini.
Back in the room, the bed lives up to its reputation: you just sink into the so mattress and pillows and dri o into a peaceful night’s sleep.
e Langham Melbourne is also home to a swimming pool, tness centre, and the Aria Bar and Lounge, which is renowned for its Ti n High Tea.

Hoppers Crossing Soccer Club coach Alfonso Opazo has le the building in a far better state than he found it.
Opazo joined the Reds a month into the 2013 season with the team languishing in the relegation zone and struggling to buy a goal.
e rst-time coach drew on his 15 years of experience in the top-level Victorian Premier League to turn the club around, culminating in last month’s state league 4 west title.
“I’d like to think I’ve le them in a good position,” Opazo told StarWeekly.
“ e foundations are there for whoever takes over. Certain cultures and expectations are in place. Gone are the days where the team was just happy to exist.”
A er17seasonsofnon-stopfootball–15asa player and two as a coach – Opazo has decided to press the on-hold button for 12 months. But a er dipping his toes into the coaching waters, Opazo is serious about building a career in the caper.
He will use his time away from the game to
build his knowledge on players and teams in higher divisions and obtain higher coaching certi cates before putting his name forward for roles in 2016.
“Ireallyhaven’thadabreakfromfootballfor 17 years,” Opazo said.
“I’m looking to have a year o but now I’ll have a bit of time on my hands, I’ll develop myselfintermsofhighercoachingcoursesand going around seeing what other leagues are like higher up. My plan is to put my hand up for a coaching gig a er a year o .”
Opazomadea ne rstimpression coaching Hoppers Crossing and it took him just 18 months to get the Reds from relegation fodder to promotion to state league 3.
“I just tried to put a bit of professionalism into the club from early on,” Opazo said.
“If certain players didn’t like that professionalism of coming to training and being committed to the cause, I’d rather them be honest and move on straight away before we even kick a ball in pre-season.
‘‘ I tried to put a bit of professionalism into the club from early on ’’ -

Alfonso Opazo
“Also the culture of winning ... I tried to bring that winning mentality into the team.
“We set some pretty high internal goals and one of them was to win every game.
“Once we dropped three points in one game we reassessed and said ‘Right, let’s not lose another game for the rest of the season’.”
e Reds lost just one game en route to the west section title, nishing 16 points clear of second-placed Melbourne City. ey made it all the way through to the SL4 nal but were overawed by a Danny Allsopp-inspired Croydon City Arrows.
“I’m de nitely proud of what we achieved,” Opazo said.
Lance Jenkinson
By Lance Jenkinson
Zia Sherzai is a lucky charm for Hoppers Crossing in Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 4 west.
e speedy le forward has claimed league best-and-fairest awards twice in the past three seasons, both times in championshipwinning sides.
Sherzai told Star Weekly this year’s individual accolade was a distant second to the thrill of winning the championship.
“I wasn’t thinking about awards, I was thinkingaboutthechampionships–anything else that came along was a bonus,” the Tarneit resident said.
“It’s a great honour to win that award, but it was even better to win the championship.” Sherzai played down his impact on the team, preferring not to take any glory away from his teammates.
But the stats back the stellar nature of his season – he kicked a team-leading 15 goals, which put him second in the competition.
Having played much of his career as a ying le winger, Sherzai moved further forward to be a key plank in coach Alfonso Opazo’s front three.
Sherzai impressed the referees, polling 22 votes in the league best-and-fairest, six clear of Melbourne City’s Jean Cardonne (16) and seven ahead of teammate Alister Smart (15), who nished equal third with Jerobeam Damons (Altona North) and Salih Sozer (Brimbank Stallions).
“I wasn’t really thinking about that award and when I won it I was really surprised and humbled,” Sherzai said.
“We had a really good team and it helped a lot. I was part of a championship-winning team … if I wasn’t, I don’t think I would’ve won it.”
Sherzai put his hot season down to a big pre-season in the gym and on the training track.
Before we spoke for this interview, Sherzai had just completed a gym session – just a few weeks a er the end of the season.
He wants to remain in peak physical condition if clubs from higher levels begin to make inquiries.
At 25, it could be a case of now or never if Sherzai wants to rise through the ranks, though he is enticed by thoughts of another campaign with the Reds when they rise to state league 3 next season.
“ e goal was always to play at a higher level,” Sherzai said. “If I’m going to … I should go now, but I don’t want to leave the

club because we’re going so well. I really don’t know yet, I’m just training really hard o -season right now and [will] see what happens.”
Opazo has given Sherzai a glowing endorsement.
He says three years of good, consistent football from Sherzai should be rewarded with a contract at a club higher in the FFV ranks.
“He’s won the league best and fairest twice in three years,” Opazo said.
“ at’s two league best and fairests in championship years, which is very hard to do
when other players are stealing votes o you from your team.
“He just needs an opportunity to show what he can do at a higher level.”
Meanwhile, Brian Chesson has won the Hoppers Crossing best-and-fairest.
Chesson has played most of his career in the mid eld, but Opazo used him in defence and he thrived.
“Having a chat to him o -season, we decided he would be better suited to the team as a stopper,” Opazo said.
“He’s very composed at the back and suits my philosophy of playing football.”
■ One of the reasons I love sport is the people I meet. Whether through my radio career or being involved at all levels of football, I’ve had the privilege of meeting some incredible people, many of them my idols such as E.J. Whitten, John Schultz, Dennis Lillee, Viv Richards and Roy Higgins. While they’re icons of sport, it has also been my pleasure to meet the heroes of local sport, many of them unsung but incredibly important people who have made a signi cant contribution to society. The late Graeme ‘Creamy’ Davis is one of those people and in honour of him and other men who have passed before their time, a Walk for Men’s Health will be held on Sunday, November 16, with all proceeds going to the E.J. Whitten Foundation. Creamy gave an enormous amount of time to local sports clubs, especially Glenorden Football Club, and he was a ripping bloke and family man. His widow, Jo, is the creator of this walk and she has the support of local identities like Ted Whitten jnr, Chris Grant, Terry Wheeler, ‘Chops’ Rickman, Mick Martyn and Barry Michael, who are all participating on the day, as is MasterChef star George Calombaris. The eight-kilometre walk will start and nish at Williamstown Football Oval. Entry is $20 and you can register at www.ejwhittenfoundation.com.au/ registration and follow the prompts. Get behind this and let’s make it a huge annual event.
■ The smartest move I have seen in local sport comes with establishment of the Golf West program via the eight golf clubs of the west. Sanctuary Lakes, Medway, Eynesbury, Sunshine, Werribee Park, Kooringal, Melton Valley and Northern have combined to give their members the chance to play other courses in the west. I know leading golf writer and player George Begg has been pushing this for years, and he’s delighted it has nally happened.
■ The Bulldogs have taken a chance on Tom Boyd and I think it’s great. We have been critical of the inability to get deals done in the past, but this one is big. If it turns out he doesn’t play 150 games and makes a lot of money, then so be it, but it was time to take a risk and I think this one will be vindicated for supporters, members and everyone who is behind the red, white and blue. While I’m sad to see Griff and Coons go, I think it’s for the best for both parties. I’m actually more cranky still about losing Callan Ward than either of those two.

Wyndhamvale Cricket Club was a lonely place to be in March.
e Falcons were le shattered, and no doubt embarrassed, when they bowed out of the VTCA nals in straight sets, making 21 in rst innings of a semi- nal to eventual west B1 premier Sunshine Heights.
Are the fortunes of both clubs starting to take a dramatic turns?
e Falcons started the new season in west A1 with a meritorious win over local rival Werribee Centrals, while the Heights had an upset loss to St Andrews Footscray.
e two sides are in the middle of a big encounter at Ainsworth Reserve, with the Falcons on top in their quest to exact revenge on the Heights.
e Falcons posted 7-208 to help bury the ghosts of the past.
Andrew Ford anchored the innings with a top score of 74. It was the kind of knock you want from your captain-coach against a
bowling attack that has troubled his line-up in the recent past.
Falcons bowler Ryan Radford says Ford provides exactly what is needed from an opening batsman.
“He plays straight, he’s patient and sets up the platform for us,” he said Ford has been elevated to the role of captain-coach this summer because of his obvious leadership qualities on and o the park.
“He’s the right age, early 30s, and he’s played cricket in a few di erent places around the world,” Radford said. “He’s got the experience and the backing of all the players. He’s brought a fresh look to training and the way we play.”
With Ford leading the way, his top order of Stuart Crowe (31), Adam Moscatiello (35) and Jay Dolliver (20) went along for the ride.
ere was a collapse in the middle of the order that brought back memories of March –ve wickets lost for six runs – but wicketkeeper
Joel Roze (23) and Steve Williams (six) held the innings together later on.
Radford is con dent the Falcons bowlers can complete the mission and put last season’s semi - nal loss behind them for good.
“It’s nice to have a couple of hundred runs on the board to play with,” he said. “We’re con dent we can defend that as a bowling group.”
Hoppers Crossing is 2-33 in reply to South Caul eld’s 195 in senior division.
Werribee Centrals are 4-58 in their pursuit of the Altona Roosters’ 132 in west A1, while PointCookwasset281forvictorybyFootscray United. In west B1, Seabrook lost a one-day game to Barkly Street Uniting by 17 runs. In the Williamstown and District Cricket Association A turf, Bellbridge – led by Matthew Edsall’s 97 – red with 302 against Williamstown Colts.

Amid Saturday’s carnage, Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association team
Werribee may have unearthed a future star in o -spinner Tom Duxson.
e bulk of the Tigers’ bowlers – but not 16-year-old, second-gamer Duxson – had been dispatched with ease by Yarraville gun Matthew Love (130no) and hard-hitting tail-ender Patrick Prestidge (59).
For the second time in as many games, Duxson proved a calming in uence, stemming the ow of runs on a batsman-friendly deck.
Duxson, who spent most of last summer in the third XI, nished with an impressive 2-36 o 17 overs, including the prized scalp of former Tiger David Wolfe.
Tigers’ skipper Shaun Dean has been impressed with Duxson’s composure during key moments of his rst two outings.
“Hedoesn’tgettoo usteredatall,”Deantold Star Weekly. “If he gets hit, he gets hit, but he hasn’t really been hit too many times in the last two weeks.”
Duxson has a couple of traits with his bowling that should stand him in good stead. He’s blessed with good height, making an awkward release point for the batsmen to pick up his deliveries, and he gets good dri away from right-handers, coaxing them to ail outside o stump before the ball spins back into the stumps a er gripping the pitch.
“He’s hard to judge; he almost bowls slowdri out-swing, but it can come back at you if he gets a bit of grip,” Dean said.
“At that age, it’s good to have those sort of skills.”

Werribee will be chasing a he y 284 for victory. Given the rare dimensions of the Yarraville Oval and a similar at deck and fast out eld, the Tigers will be con dent of chasing the target down.
“It looks a big total, but it was a really at wicket and there was a very short side of their ground towards the grandstand,” Dean said.
“All they did was target that boundary. ey were getting a half-bat on it and it was
just sailing over the fence. At one stage we had four blokes on that one boundary and we were jumping up on the fence trying to catch it and they were just getting it over.
“It’s not even the old saying if we bat 80, we’ll get them. If we bat to our potential, it won’t take us 80 overs; it’ll be less than that.”
Jonathan Burton returned to the Tigers’ line-up for the rst time this summer. He was the pick of the quicks with an economical 2-46
o 19 overs, including eight maidens. “He tied them down,” Dean said.
“Even at the end, I brought him back for the last three overs because everyone was copping a bit, but he was one who stemmed the ow.” James Freeman nished with 1-72 o 18, but the pitch o ered little guidance to his style of bowling. Heath Pritchard continued his impressive start with 2-71 o 17, including the removal of both Yarraville openers.

It was just like playing catch in the park for Werribee Giants pitcher Tayler Rowe and his man behind the plate, Oliver Box.
e pair were so locked in and on the same wavelength that Port Melbourne’s batters were nearly invisible in the last eight innings of the Giants’ 8-1 win on Sunday in Baseball Victoria summer league division 2 at Presidents Park. At one stage, Rowe and Box combined to sit down19battersinarow,withonlyabroken-bat single late in the piece ending the streak.
Giants coach Justin Charles observes that pitcher and catcher make a great combination. “ ey grew up together, they have a really good chemistry and now they’ve grown into big strong kids,” he said.
“ e pitcher is only as good as his catcher … Oliver set the hitters up and Tayler had the trust. ey dropped into the zone, were so in the moment, totally absorbed in their work … that’s how we were able to dictate terms.
“To shut out a team for eight innings is a phenomenal e ort.”
When Charles agreed to coach the Giants, he put Rowe’s name at the top of his wishlist of potential recruits.
Rowe had a stop-start season for Sunshine lastsummerduetoworkcommitmentsbutwas at his best for Bacchus Marsh in the Geelong winter league.
It made sense for Charles to target a homegrown player before looking elsewhere, particularly with the import he had sounded out falling through.
“[Rowe] was someone we pursued pretty vigorously in the preseason because he was a former Werribee boy and he’s also very talented,” Charles said.
e Giants have made it two consecutive

wins to be 2-1 for the season. e opening three weeks have been an emotional rollercoaster for players and supporters a er out elder Michael Riches died in a car accident.
e remainder of the season has been dedicated to the memory of Riches, who would have been a key player for the Giants.
“I’ve been around the game for 30 years and it was arguably the toughest game I’ve ever had to prepare for and have the guys prepare for,” Charles said of the season opener three weeks ago.
“ e boys have such heart and courage and camaraderie, and to lose the uno cial captain of your team in those circumstances is just such a challenge.
“ e boys are bouncing back really strong and now they’re doing it in tribute to Michael.
“It’s like he’s sitting on everyone’s shoulders for the rest of the season.”
e in-form Giants will face Fitzroy Lions (1-2) on the road at Merri Park, Northcote, on Sunday.
Charles is hoping his players can continue
the “really good energy” and “hustle” they have been displaying.
Meanwhile, Charles will be an assistant coach to Ron Carruthers for a division 2 all-star team that will face ABL club Melbourne Aces in an exhibition game on October 31.
Giants players Rowe, Box, Wade Balzer and Wes De Jong have been named in the preliminary squad.
“We’ve got some pretty handy players in division 2 knocking on the door of elite-level baseball,” Charles said.

If OJ Simpson had a Dodge Journey during that famous police chase in 1994, he might have increased his chances of outrunning Los Angeles’ nest.
e sprightly Journey looks like an SUV but it has big-sedan like performance that provides a best-of-both-worlds practicality and driveability.
It’s propelled by Chrysler’s 3.6L Pentastar V6 engine, which is also found in the Chrysler 300 and Jeep Wrangler. It’s very responsive and makesanicenoisewhenyouputthefootdown.
It has a rm but smooth ride.
Fuel economy is as expected with an engine thissize.Interestingly,it’sabitmoreeconomical than the 2.7L engine it replaced in 2012.
Like most American cars available here, it comes with a host of bells and whistles as standard. e base-model SXT comes with six-way adjustable power driver’s seat with lumbar adjust, six-speaker audio system with 8.4-inch Uconnect touch screen, phone connectivity, three-zone climate control, roof rails and front and rear fog lights.
For an extra $4000, you can upgrade to the R/T model I drove, getting leather upholstery, heated front seats, sat-nav, reversing camera and sensors, and a sub-woofer.
One thing it could do with is more USB ports for charging devices – anyone with teenagers will know what I mean.
e R/T has a ceiling-mounted DVD player for the rear passengers that can be controlled

via front touch screen or remote control. And it also has bluetooth headphones to save the driver from having to put up with atrocious distractions such as Dora the Explorer e adjustable back seats have built-in boosters that fold upwards to let the little ones see out the window. e vehicle easily turns

into a seven-seater via the extra bench seat that folds up from the rear cargo area. ere’s heaps of storage too, including a ni y space under the front passenger seat cushion. Two hatches under the rear foot wells can each store eight drink cans – with ice! e Journey is the only Dodge in the
Chrysler Group’s Australian line-up that suggests that the US car giant recognises that it has something to o er beyond its various Jeep models, not least the extra two seats. It’s available at Werribee Chrysler Jeep Dodge, 163-179 Old Geelong Road www.werribeechryslerjeep.com.au
