Wyndham’s level crossings have been the scene of 245 incidents in the past 12 years, prompting calls from the council and transport lobby groups for them to be removed.
Last week, Wyndham council released a report stating that the crossings were safety risks and were adding to tra c congestion on the city’s roads, with boom gates down for up to 35 minutes per hour in peak periods. It is predicted that the volume of tra c crossingthetrackswillrise95percentby2046.
e council is urging the Liberal and Labor parties to commit to grade separating the Werribee Street, Cherry Street, Old Geelong Road and Galvin Road crossings if they win the state election. e council also wants extra lanes added to the existing grade-separated crossings at Derrimut and Forsyth roads and three new crossings added to the network to reduce the distance motorists need to travel to cross the tracks.
Suzanne Cory High School teacher Nick Cummins has backed the calls for grade separations, saying the school has growing

concernsforthesafetyof600ofits800students who regularly use Hoppers Crossing station.
“We are very concerned that level crossing is an accident waiting to happen,” he said.
e report said the crossings were also making it di cult for emergency services to reach people in a timely manner.
Former Werribee CFA captain Darryl Wells said the brigade, which houses the area’s only road rescue team, had to wait at level crossings 80 per cent of the times it crossed the tracks.
“Someone is seriously injured and needs removing from the car and we can’t get across
because the boom gates are down,” he said. Opposition treasury spokesman and Tarneit MP Tim Pallas said Labor was committed to removing 50 of Melbourne’s worst level crossings. He has pledged to remove the crossings at Werribee and Cherry streets within eight years.
A spokeswoman for Public Transport Minister Terry Mulder would not answer questions about whether the government would commit to removing Wyndham’s level crossings, preferringtospruikthegovernment’s other transport projects.

A Point Cook school will keep raising chickens and ducks despite an attack on its birds earlier this month.
O enders broke into an enclosure at Carranballac College’s Jamieson Way campus on October 1, decapitating four chickens and two ducks.
e dead animals were discovered by sta and students the next day.
A man in his 40s was rushed to hospital following a crash in Truganina on Thursday. The crash, involving a concrete truck and car, happened on Hopkins Road, about 150 metres south of Greigs Road, near the Melbourne-Ballarat railway line, about 12.50pm.
Senior Sergeant Ross Burbidge, of the Melton highway patrol, said it appeared at this stage as though the driver of the Daewoo sedan, which was heading south towards Werribee, drifted to the wrong side of the road and into the path of the fully-laden truck.
The driver of the car, who was its sole occupant, was taken to the Alfred Hospital after sustaining serious upper body injuries. He remains in a critical condition.
e birds had been hatched from eggs and raised by pupils in grades 5 and 6.
Teacher John Forrester said pupils had been traumatised by the act of animal cruelty but the school would not be stopping its program.
“It’s not worth stopping the program because of a few irresponsible, immature louts,” he said.
“We have put a lot of work into this. e children get a tremendous amount of learning out of the program.”

last year, when two of the campus’s six chickens were killed, while two others were injured. e two remaining chickens went missing.
Mr Forrester said the program, which has been running since 2012, gave children without pets at home a chance to interact with animals, while also teaching them about responsibility, nature and growth.
He said grades 5 and 6 pupils looked a er the animals with the help of older pupils, while other grades played with them during breaks.
“In the mornings, a ernoons or during the school holidays, passers-by love seeing the animals and watching the ducks splashing in the pond. e young ones especially love it,” Mr Forrester said.
He said the school had already received o ers from companies keen to help build a more substantial chicken enclosure, and new chickens were due to arrive today.
Anyone with information about the attack is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Police charged 11 people and smashed a sophisticated heroin-tra cking syndicate on ursday a er raids on nine residential properties, including a house in Braybrook.
e Caul eld divisional response unit executed warrants as part of the eight- month Operation Isoleucine investigation into a multimillion-dollar drug tra cking ring.
e syndicate was allegedly manufacturing $1 million worth of heroin every month.
Searches uncovered drug manufacturing equipment, “street-ready” heroin valued at more than $500,000, and $500,000 in cash hidden in locations including children’s toys.
Police charged 11 people with tra cking a large commercial quantity of heroin. ey include Braybrook women Suong Pham, 60, Linh Trinh, 27, and uy Trinh, 26, and SunshineNorthwomanUtNguyen,59.Arrests were also made in Mentone, ornbury, Richmond, Fitzroy and Flemington.
Two Mercedes, one Lexus, one Audi, a brand new Toyota Corolla and a scooter were seized from a home in Ruby Way, Braybrook, as part of the operation.
Southern metropolitan division two Superintendent Ross Guenther said police believed the arrests had “destroyed a very signi cant crime group” and would keep millions of dollars’ worth of heroin from hitting the streets.
“We will be seizing properties, assets including prestige motor vehicles, and be restraining accounts where it appears pro ts are held as a result of this drug enterprise,” Superintendent Guenther said.
Police also located a safe house in Gordon

found money and
Street, Footscray, allegedly used by the syndicate to conduct business and prepare the heroin for sale.
e investigation involved police from the drug taskforce, critical incident response team, Victoria Police and AFP dog squads, Mill Park and Melbourne divisional response units,
Kingston and Bayside crime investigation units, and Glen Eira, Kingston and Brimbank divisional tasking units.
“It is because of this assistance and the co-ordinated response that we have been able to reveal the full extent of this criminality,” Superintendent Guenther said.
‘Time to act’ on critical care
Six weeks out from the state election, federal Lalor MP Joanne Ryan has urged the state government to commit to building a critical care unit at Werribee’s Mercy Hospital.
Last week, Premier Denis Napthine committed $120 million to a specialist cardiac hospital at Clayton, if the Coalition is re-elected. Ms Ryan said it was time Wyndham received some medical attention.
“ is cardiac hospital is great news for the east, but what about the Werribee Mercy Hospital?”
She said Werribee was a high growth area of more than 200,000 people, with theclosestcriticalcareunit26kilometres away.
“Acriticalcareunit[atMercyHospital] would enable it to assist high-needs patients locally, instead of sending them on to Footscray, Sunshine or the city.” Mercy Health chief executive Adjunct Professor Stephen Cornelissen said the hospital needed $85 million for a critical care unit, expanded theatres and wards.
“ e lack of critical care facilities means the hospital is very limited in its ability to respond,” he said. “Each month, between 85 and 90 patients are transferred from the Werribee Mercy Hospital emergency department to other hospitals.
e unprecedented growth in the region warrants an urgent commitment of funds. e time to act is now.”

AlmostoneinthreeofWyndham’slow-income households is experiencing rental stress, triggering calls for an increase in public housing.
New gures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics reveal 30 per cent of renters in the Werribee and Lara electorates, which include Werribee,WerribeeSouth,WyndhamValeand Little River, are paying almost a third of their weekly incomes on rent.

“If you’re earning $640 or less a week and paying a third of that on rent you’re in dire straits, and yet this is the case for 120,000 households across Victoria,” she said.

Kevin Hillier asks: Do service clubs still have a role?
The Apex Club of Hoppers Crossing is no longer, a er 48 years of service to the community. at’s unfortunate, but they’ll go out with a bang with a dinner at Hoppers Crossing Sports Club from 6.30pm on October 25. For details and bookings call Darren Hellmann on 0413 607 645.
e club has succumbed to dwindling numbers and, basically, lack of interest. It got me thinking about the relevance of service clubs in this day and age. I was a Rotarian for many years but when the commitment interfered with my family life I resigned. I acknowledge the work and bene t that service clubs like Apex, Lions and Rotary have given, and continue to give, to the community. It’s a body of commitment that is to be commended but you have to wonder if it’s still relevant these days.
Clubs have changed the joining criteria to include older and younger members and have included women to boost membership and to become politically correct. Attendance parameters have been relaxed to accommodate
the changing work conditions we all face, yet clubs still struggle or, as in this case, fold. So are service clubs relevant? If they exist to serve the community I say an overwhelming Yes. If they’re there to allow business people to network and promote their businesses, I say No. Unfortunately, I see a lot more of the latter these days.
Nobody can deny the great work done by clubs such as Hoppers Crossing Apex Club which, in its time, has donated more than $500,000tolocalpeopleandorganisations. e club helped on various projects like building a playground at the old hospital, co-ordinating Da odil Day, tree-planting, selling Christmas trees … the list goes on. Many of my closest friends are still members of service clubs and I hope they continue.
I also hope those clubs keep to the charter they were founded on and don’t lose sight of what they’re there to achieve. While I see reasons for aid to other countries, I have to say mypersonalprioritynowistohelpthosecloser

Learning the hard way
An L-plater has had his permit suspended after being caught driving with a blood alcohol reading of 0.138 and without an accompanying licensed driver. The Truganina man, 25, rolled his car on Leakes Road early Sunday. Police said the car was written off and the man was lucky to escape injury. He will face Werribee Magistrates Court at a later date charged with drink driving and careless driving offences.
River dredging goes on Dredging will continue at the Werribee River channel to ensure safe boating access at Werribee South. Parks Victoria spokesman Stephen McPhee said a natural build-up of sand had created a hazard, which would be removed and re-distributed along the beach. Mr McPhee said the dredged material contained seaweed, which may give the beach an unpleasant smell and colour for a short time. Boat users are advised to take care and observe the ve-knot speed limit in the channel and in the vicinity of the dredging. Details: 13 1963 or visit www.parks.vic.gov.au.
Disaster plan put in place State and local government representatives, as well as emergency service crews, were in Werribee last Friday for a training exercise to plan how they would respond to an extended power outage in Wyndham. Operation Fusion focused on the sequencing of steps needed to ensure the community is able to recover as quickly as possible in the advent of a major disaster.

A government’s shame
[Re: Aged care anger grows, Star Weekly, October 8] Shame on the Napthine government for your Band-Aid solution while these poor elderly people get no say. No real pathway for these residents. My father is at South Stone Lodge. I was advised eight weeks ago he would not be ready for a long while to go into mainstream care. Now, eight weeks later, I am meant to believe they have all the help and tools to care for him in mainstream? This is a money issue because the Napthine government has cut funding for a much-needed resource.
Of course, there is a need for an aged-care mental health facility – we hear all the time how much these facilities are needed. So please don’t insult us, Napthine government, by telling as there are high vacancies.
No one chooses to go to South Stone Lodge – it’s our last resort. I did mainstream and they couldn’t handle my dad’s behaviour. South Stone Lodge staff are trained psychiatric staff who can handle these behaviour issues.
I feel sorry for the mainstream staff and other patients because these residents have behaviour issues – it’s an illness and they may seriously hurt someone in a mainstream facility, all because our state government wants to axe funds.
I challenge Mr Napthine to come to South Stone Lodge and see if he would be happy for them to live in the same facility as his parents. And tell me there is no need for a place like South Stone!

East West a ‘vital project’
I was intrigued to read Bob Fairclough’s mayoral column in which he detailed his meeting with the shadow minister for transport. From the content of the column, it appears the mayor and his executive failed to mention the highest transport priority for Wyndham, the East West link. I sincerely hope the councillor was not quiet as a mouse now that Labor has betrayed the west by refusing to build the East West link at all, considering his vocal support of Get Wyndham Moving, which advocates for the East West link.
It is most concerning that Wyndham has committed $2 million in ratepayer money to advocate for the transport needs of the west, yet it would seem it does not hold Labor to account for the East West back ip.
Thankfully, there are councillors willing to ght for the needs of Melbourne’s west –Glenn Goodfellow must be congratulated for

his continued advocacy for this vital project. Only the Napthine Liberals will build the East West link because the Napthine Liberals are the only party who care about the west.

A er a desperate appeal to nd a new, larger home, a Werribee-based boxing program for at-risk young people has been given a ghting chance.
As previously reported by Star Weekly, most of the boxers involved in the program are from low-socioeconomic families or have struggled to hold down or secure full-time education or employment.

With numbers booming, Mr Cowley last month issued a plea for a larger venue to secure the program’s long-term future.

Janet Stumbo shouldn’t be alive. Hers is a story of remarkable courage, tenacity and incredible determination against many odds.
Blessed with a brilliant mind, she had travelled half way around the world from the United States to Australia in 1974 to pursue a career as a veterinarian.
In 1984, she was working at her own practice in Merimbula, on the New South Wales south coast, following her dream.
One day, she was out driving. She has no memory of what happened next.
“IwastoldIwasruno theroadbyadrunken driver,” she said.

“Almost all people involved in accidents who are injured as badly as I was don’t survive.”
Every part of her brain was injured.
“My vision was severely impacted, but I wasn’t blind,” Ms Stumbo said.

Ms Stumbo was told by her neurosurgeon she was nearly blind, would never get better or

Communities in Melbourne’s western suburbs can save on electricity bills through an innovative new offer.
EnergyAustralia is offering Wyndham residents an exclusive community-buy deal on solar power systems.
Residents in the surrounding suburbs (in a 15km radius of Hoppers Crossing) can also join in and benefit from the savings.
This community buy deal is simple: the more solar power systems sold in the area, the greater the discounts will be.
Starting at a special price of $4,699 for a 3kW solar power system, suitable for an average family home, the price drops depending on the number of community orders:
*If 20 systems are sold residents will pay $4,499
*If 50 systems are sold residents will pay $4,399
*If 70 systems are sold residents will pay $4,299 This results in up to $400 off the original special. The offer is for a limited time and will be available for only 30 days, ending on 14 November.
Washing machines, air conditioners, dishwashers and pool pumps can end up consuming a lot of energy, but installing a solar power system can dramatically reduce electricity bills for homes that use these appliances during the day. Many people that could benefit from solar power often don’t understand how it works, are confused by the process and think it’s expensive – so don’t seriously consider it as an option for their home.
EnergyAustralia helps cut through the confusion with their tailored end-to-end service – they will explain how it works, ask you the right questions to find out if solar power is the right option for you, and use the latest satellite mapping to look at your roof while you’re on the phone – a quick and convenient quote process.

EnergyAustralia offers a range of quality systems to meet various household needs and budgets. This is a great opportunity to get big savings as a community – tell your neighbours and save together.
EnergyAustralia will be in the community to answer any questions about solar power on Tuesday 28th October between 2.30pm and 8pm at the Featherbrook Community Centre in Point Cook.

A Werribee man who kicked another man’s head “like a football” in a brutal pub attack last year has been sentenced to 14 months’ jail.
e County Court last week heard that just a er 6.30pm on April 19, 2013, as the 48-year-old victim bent over to pick up something from the oor, Joel Diamond, 30, from Werribee, who was on parole at the time, took a “deliberate kick” at his head, connecting with his face and causing him to fall.
While he was still lying on the oor, Diamond’s girlfriend, Sarah Ellis, also kicked the victim’s head. ecourtheardEllisandDiamond’sbrother, Rhys, had earlier been involved in both verbal and physical altercations with the victim and been ordered out of the hotel.
Ellis then called Diamond and told him the victimhadmadederogatoryremarksabouther, while Rhys told his brother he had a bleeding lipa ertheearlierdispute.Oneorbothpointed out the victim when Joel Diamond came to the hotel.
Allthree eda ertheattack, buttheincident was captured on CCTV.
e victim sustained injuries, including a fractured skull and broken nose, and was placed in an induced coma.
While the victim now has a brain injury, Judge Susan Cohen could not be satis ed beyond reasonable doubt that these injuries had been caused by Diamond or the earlier incidents with his brother and Ellis.
She said although it was likely Diamond’s kick contributed to the victim’s brain injury, it was unclear who caused the greater damage.
Judge Cohen described Ellis’s role in the attack as more extensive, a er punching, or attempting to punch the victim in the face and later kicking him in the head.
Earlier this year, Ellis, who was 19 at the time of the incident, pleaded guilty to recklessly causing serious injury. She was sentenced to twoyearsandsixmonths’jail, withaminimum of 15 months.
‘‘ You saw the opportunity … to treat his head like a football ’’ - Judge Cohen
e court heard Joel Diamond had been paranoid at the time due to being stabbed during a home invasion.
Judge Cohen described his actions as “callous”, “brutal” and “cowardly”, and said she was satis ed that Diamond’s purpose for entering the hotel was to “seek some type of retribution [against the victim], whether as payback or to teach him a lesson”.
“You saw the opportunity, or perhaps could not resist the temptation, to treat his head like a football,” she said.
A er being found not guilty last month by a jury of recklessly or intentionally causing seriousinjury,JudgeCohenconvictedDiamond of one count of intentionally causing serious injury and sentenced him to 14 months’ jail.
He has already served 10 months in pre-sentence detention and will be put on a community corrections order a er his release.

Plans to open a new high school at the former Mowbray College site next year have been shelved a er a poor response to enrolments.
West Lakes Grammar School was scheduled to open in Caroline Springs next year. But the new school board has been deregistered and the principal who had been appointed for the new school is now seeking another job.

It was the cruelest blow – the precious ashes of Kurunjang parents Joanne and Mark Valiukas’s stillborn triplets were stolen during a burglary last ursday.
Last week, the couple wept and pleaded with the “heartless” thieves to return the remains of their children to their mother, “where they belonged”.
e Valiukas’s heartbreak was replaced with relief at the weekend when Melton teenager Josh Fitzpatrick, 17, found the box containing the ashes under a tree at the side of a road in Melton South.
Mrs Valiukas thanked the “hero” who “gave us back everything”.
“He took the time to race home to his mum and do the right thing,” she said. “A lot of people don’t; he’s an incredible young man and I just have no words. ank you seems so inadequate, but it’s all I have.”

What’s your connection to the local community?
I’ve been a doctor in Werribee since 1988 and have lived in Wyndham since 1980. Until two years ago I was delivering babies at Werribee Hospital. I delivered about 3000 babies there, including three second-generation deliveries. I’ve also worked in palliative care and completed home visits for the elderly. It was years since I had been down to Red Hill and I was a little concerned the building boom that has transformed the Mornington Peninsula’s coastlines might have crept inland to ruin the beautiful hamlet.
I needn’t have worried. Apart from more grazing land making way for grape vines and a few fancy “cellar door” buildings, the tiny town retains its rural charm while hosting plenty of opportunities to experience life’s ner things.

A few things survived the refurbishment, including the en suite, which looked a little dated but was large and well equipped with a big bath with spa jets.

Soon a er arriving, we tasted a few Lindenderry wines – from Red Hill and its sister winery at Macedon – in the Cellar Door restaurant a short distance from the hotel foyer.
Open between 11am and 5pm on weekends, the Cellar Door serves a selection of light meals, including wood- red pizzas and the popular Graziers Plate, a selection of house-made terrines, pates, cold meats

Breakfast and dinner are served in the Linden Tree Restaurant, which is dominated by a magni cent ceiling-high window overlooking the vineyard.
e restaurant was quiet on the night we were there, which gave it an intimate feel. With only one waiter, we had to wait a while to be seated and served, but the service itself was very friendly.
e food was good and priced in line for such a location, with entrées about the $20 mark and mains about $37.
I opted for the pork belly salad starter, while my partner tried the caramelised spring onion broth. Both were delicious. Being lovers of steak, we both opted for the Wagyu rump, which was full of avour and went down well with Lindenderry pinot noir.

My most recent column – on my husband’s love affair with vanilla slices – really struck a chord with Food Bytes readers. Apparently Kevin’s not the only one with a passion for “snot blocks” (as he so eloquently calls them).
Amber wrote: “My husband is quite picky about his ‘snot blocks’, too. Very early in our marriage, l thought l would be the ideal wife and spent over two hours on my day off making vanilla slice from scratch. That’s right – my mille-feuille had the proper pastry, the exact custard lling and a thick layer of passionfruit icing on the top. I was so proud (and exhausted) But when l presented the nal product to my adoring husband, he screwed up his face. Why? Because HIS vanilla slice always had PINK icing! I now use Morning Coffee biscuits with a packet of Cottee’s vanilla pudding mix, milk and cream with PINK icing on top.
It takes less than ve minutes and everyone is happy.”
Here is Amber’s recipe:
1 packet of Morning Coffee biscuits
1 packet of Cottee’s Instant Pudding
150ml thickened cream
Half a cup of milk.
Spread half the biscuits in a tin or container. Whisk the milk, pudding and cream together until just thickened. Spread the mixture over the biscuits. Spread the other half packet of biscuits over the top. Spread icing (of your preferred colour) if required.
Thanks also to Rosemary, who wrote: “I am like Kevin and love vanilla slices. I make the ones with the lattice biscuits. They are so easy to make as you only need two packets of biscuits, a vanilla pudding mix and a large bottle of cream. My kids still love them!”

The amendment proposes to apply the Environmental Significance Overlay (ESO) to land generally 50 metres from the middle of the Kororoit Creek for the entire length of the Creek as it extends through the municipality except where the Creek runs through a Public Use Zone 1 (PUZ1) where the boundary will be extended to align with the zone boundary where this is greater than the 50 metres. It is also intended to apply the ESO to a Council-owned property containing a constructed watertreatment wetland. This has been assessed as appropriate due to the environmental value it provides.

Do you know what the wine varieties mamaia, carmine, evmolpia and ederena have in common? ey’reactuallydi erentnamesfrom around the world for the same grape: merlot.
Sorry for the trick question but it helps to illustrate just how far and wide merlot is grown and enjoyed. It’s one of the world’s most widely planted grapes – from the Ukraine to Uruguay, and Israel to France, where it’s the country’s single-most planted grape.
It’s believed merlot gets its name from the blackbirds that are so fond of its ripe grapes in south-west France. ese birds are known as merlau in the ancient Occitan language.
Moreo enthannot, this eshy, easydrinking red is blended with cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc, rather than made into single varietal wine.
Its juicy plum, blackberry and herbal avours helpgivethecabernetsasweetmid-palate(think of it as the jam in the middle of a doughnut on your tongue) and so en the austerity of cabernet’s rm tannins.
ere’s a lot of merlot planted in Australia –it’s third behind shiraz and cabernet sauvignon – and it is used widely as a blender. Indeed, I reckon the ratio of cabernet-merlot bottles to straight merlot I open would be about ve to one.
e best merlot examples are considered to be from the right bank of Bordeaux’s Gironde River. In the past decade or so, it has played a larger role in the blends of Bordeaux’s le bank as producers seek to create so er, earlier
drinking wines. While it’s become more important in Bordeaux, the opposite could be said for the grape in California.
e decline has a lot to do with the 2004 lm Sideways and its lead character Miles Raymond, who uttered: “If anyone orders merlot I’m leaving. I’m not drinking any e ng merlot.” California winemaker Randy Ullom says the comments were justi ed.
“People started planting it everywhere,” says Ullom, who has made wines for Kendall-Jackson in California for more than 20 years. “When it took o , merlot was planted on the north and south coast and people said, ‘Oh my God, we’ve got to get on this bandwagon,’ sotheystartedplantingiteverywhere. You’dget a herbaceousness from the central valleys [that had a detrimental e ect on the wines].
“At the beginning, if you were to put all California’s merlot grapes together to make a single wine out of it, it would have been pretty good. Soon a er [if you did the same thing] it would have been good, then so-so, then bad, then to, ‘Oh my God, we’ve bastardised the whole thing’.”
But Ullom says there have been long-term bene ts and merlot again stands tall next to California’s best-known grapes; pinot noir, cabernet sauvignon and zinfandel.
“All the low-quality vineyards were ripped out because nobody wanted them. It was a natural selection thing, where only the ttest and best have survived,” he says. “But merlot’s coming back now. If you put everybody’s merlot into a big pot now and made a wine, you’d have a pretty nice wine.”

Point Cook has slumped to a heavy opening round defeat to Williamstown CYMS in Victorian Turf Cricket Association west A1.
It was a baptism of re for the promoted WarriorsontheirtriptoFearonReserve, facing a CYs side relegated from the strong second tier of the competition.
e Warriors failed miserably with the bat, all out for 99.
Tyson Pearce top-scored with 27 from No.7 in a Warrior e ort littered with uncapitalised starts.

In the local derby, Wyndhamvale emerged victorious over Werribee Centrals by 25 runs on home turf at Wyndhamvale Reserve.
e Falcons were on shaky ground a er posting just 131, with wicketkeeper Joel Roze leading the way with 26 not out. But their bowlers were magni cent,
restricting Centrals to 106, with a large chunk of the runs (40) coming from Trent Milne.
New-ball duo Chris Plummer (3-12) and Ryan Radford (3-20) were thorns in the side of the Centrals batsmen.
In senior division, Hoppers Crossing lost by 32 runs to St Bernard’s Old Collegians.
e Cats will be at home for the rst time this season on Saturday for a two-day game against South Caul eld.
In west B1, Seabrook beat Kingsville Baptists by 51 runs at Angliss Reserve. e Saints put on a batting master class for 7-231 o 40 overs.

Ian Andrew is upskilling Hoppers Bowls Club players – and not just the bottom-enders. enewcoachwantstofast-tracktheprocess fortheplayersinhistopsideaswell–thosewho have been on the wrong end of heavy defeats in the rsttwogamessincetheirpromotiontothe BowlsVictoriadivision2competition,whichis the third level of metropolitan bowls.
Andrew, who travels from Ballarat three times a week to take up his new role, told Star Weekly the gulf in quality between the division3tierthatHoppersplayedlastyearand division 2 is bigger than he initially thought.
“It’s a fairly big step for us,” he said.
“ e problem is there’s very little depth in our top sides at the moment.
“From one division to another, it’s a huge step and you need to pick up a few players to compete.”
Andrew is taking a holistic approach to his rst year in charge.
It doesn’t matter if you are a skip in the top side or an up and comer in the bottom side, his aim is to make everyone better.
“How would you like to go out there and play every week, play terrible, get beat … no one likes to do that,” Andrew said.
“All I want is for them to play a little better so they can enjoy their game.”
Hoppers’ top side has endured a baptism of re. It’s taken only one rink – Dennis Hewitt snatched one in Saturday’s big 112-62 loss to Melton – from a possible eight in the opening fortnight.
One thing Hoppers can’t a ord is to have their better players missing, and a hand injury willsidelineColinRavenscro untilChristmas, whileskipBillWeirwasunavailablelastouting.
“Unfortunately, it’s the top-end players we don’t have when they’re out,” Andrew said.
“We’ve probably got four or ve in the side who aren’t good enough for the level, but we’ve got nobody else.”
Despite the losing start, Andrew can sense the growing excitement at the club to have climbed higher in Bowls Victoria ranks.
At training on Tuesdays and ursdays in seasons past, you would be lucky to nd a full rink in operation, whereas now two rinks are chock-full.
ere’s a desire among players to do better with Andrew, who has a Bowls Australia advanced certi cate.
He’s already proving to be a great sounding board for questions red his way.

Hoppers player-coach Ian Andrew watches his bowl like a hawk. (Wayne Hawkins)
“ ey’re having a real go,” Andrew said. “ ey said to me around the club that we’ve never had this kind of vibe before.
“ ey’re all keen, they’re all trying and we will get better. I want to make everybody a better player so they can enjoy the game.”
Andrew has an open-ended contract but envisages a minimum two-to-three year term.
He’s eager to see the top two sides consolidate their positions in divisions two and three.
“ ey want to get to division 1, but that won’t happen for a couple of years.
“SoIwantthatsidelockedintodivision2this year, and to keep the division 3 side in division 3,” he said.
“If we can do that in year one, we’ve done pretty well, I would think.”
Meanwhile, Werribee went down 101-69 to Essendon (2) in a division 1 blow-out on Saturday.

■ In December, 2009, I had the honour of receiving life membership of the Western Bulldogs. It remains one of my proudest moments. The last week has not tested my commitment and passion for the Western Bulldogs but it has highlighted that the club I walked into 30 years ago is totally different to the one that exists today. Football is a business and it now appears the only place for sentiment and loyalty lies with the supporters because they are the only ones who choose the club. For everyone else it is a profession.
During my career as a radio broadcaster I have worked for 3XY, Fox, Triple M, Gold, 3AK and currently SEN. I was never going to be a one station ‘player’. Why do we, as footy supporters, think that should be the case with players?
The last week at the Bulldogs was messy, to say the least. The new logo launch was all positive but what followed sent that into quicksand. While Peter Gordon said the players don’t run the club, the sheer weight of numbers (44 v 1) indicates who will win in the end. I have never seen myself as a players’ man, a board man or favouring any department in the club. I am a life member and, above all, a supporter, so I want what is best for the club. I want to be proud to support the red, white and blue – and I wasn’t last week.
I have seen players, coaches, presidents, staff come and go. I don’t think even Glenys on reception pre-dates me. Yes, I was upset, even angry, when Brad Hardie left, when Terry Wheeler was sacked, when Leon Cameron was traded and when Dougie was shown the door. I wasn’t angry this week, I was sad. Why? I love football but I don’t think I like the AFL version very much, except to watch.
I am one of those old-fashioned supporters, who is passionate about the club and club loyalty, and I know Peter Gordon is the same. We can’t go back because football is a business these days but we can still ask for some basic values, such as honesty and integrity. Very few are doing it for the love of the jumper these days; they are doing it for a salary. So, do your job and if you don’t, face the consequences. We all laugh at footage of Ron Barassi berating Gerard Healy at the Swans, today he would probably be sacked. What do you think?

e end of the road has arrived for a distinguished group of Werribee Devils veterans in Big V basketball women’s division 1.
e retirements of Lisa Troyahn, Emma Coyne and Sharon Plichta will hit hard.
Jodi Impey has also departed, headed for either retirement or one last go round with former club Keilor under, while Elisha Burnette is still to decide whether to go on.
All had long and successful careers and will leave massive gaps in the Devils’ roster.
Welcome to a new era, one with which Lloyd Klaman has been entrusted to keep the Devils’ women’s program ticking along.
Klaman, a former coach of the Canberra Cannons in the NBL, was reappointed to kick-start the Devils’ regeneration.
“I’m rapt to be back; I love the club and it’s a real exciting time,” he said. “It will be a di erent year with a lot of the veterans not coming back, so it will be a really young group coming through.”
Klaman sensed the end was nearing for the old-timers. e long-time coach was already laying the foundations for the next wave before extending his contract.
He put time into the development of Maddison Rocci, Georgia Tauschke, Alex Moss and Brittany Klaman and is excited at their potential.
A secondary wave of promising young under-18s appears ready to transition into the open-age ranks.
“ ere’s a lot of good kids coming through and I want to give them all of the opportunity
that I can,” Klaman said. “A lot of the girls have now had two full years, so even though they’re only 19 or 20, they’ve got a fair bit of experience.
“With this young group, I think we can really push hard in this o -season.”
While there is no shortage of willing youngsters ready to step up and ll the sizeable shoes of the veterans, there are few ‘bigger’ players coming through the system. e centre and power forward positions might need to be outsourced.
Klaman will not decide whether to pursue an import or head hunt the odd player or two until a er trials, which take place at the Werribee Sports and Recreation Centre on October 26. ey’re open to all basketballers interested in trying out for the Devils.

Heath Pritchard is like a ne wine that just gets better with age. e veteran all-rounder has delivered in spades since crossing to Werribee at the start of last season.
e top form of last summer looks set to continue a er his starring role in the Tigers’ (7-287) season-opening 34-run win over Kew (253) in Saturday’s Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association match at Victoria Park.
With 5-56 o 21 overs, Pritchard was instrumental in ensuring his side claimed the points on a di cult day two. His work with the ball backed up his 66 not out which, with a century from Matt Dean, set up the impressive victory.
When Tigers captain Shaun Dean needed a partnership breaker with the ball on day two, he only had to turn to Pritchard.
“I used him at di erent periods of the day,” Dean said. “He got a wicket in the rst over of the game and then I brought him back on just before tea and he got the other opener.
“ en he came back again later in the day to get wickets in the middle and lower order.”
is was a catalogue-worthy victory for Werribee. e Tigers were decimated by unavailability and managed to get up in stirring fashion.
“ ere was something like 15 players unavailable across the whole club for the rst round, and it was more the guys at the top end, so it was a bit of a juggling act,” Dean said.
“It shows we have a lot of depth to be able to win a game like that in the rst XI and to also romp it home in the second XI was pretty good.”
With absences came opportunities. Young o -spinner Tom Duxson grabbed his chance with both hands, nishing with the tidy gure of 0-38 o 16 overs, including seven maidens.
“He’s only 16 and played most of last season in the thirds,” Dean said.
“He’s a quality junior cricketer, a good batsman, but he was in the side for his bowling because we needed an extra spin option.
“He really put the brakes on them and made it di cult to score from the 20th over right through to tea.
“It’s a great experience for him to be able to perform under that sort of pressure.”
Adam Alifraco worked on his spin bowling over the winter to be more e ective in the two-day format.
He o ered the variety asked for by his captain en route to 2-48 o 11.
“He’s changing his game a little bit with the way he bowls,” Dean said.
“He’s known to bowl a lot of darters and in two-day cricket that’s no good to us.
“We’ve been working with him in the oseason to change his pace up.”
e Tigers will welcome back the top-shelf Tim O’Brien, Jonathan Burton and James Freemanfortheirtwo-dayclashwithYarraville at the Yarraville Oval starting on Saturday.

“We’ve got a lot of good young kids, but we don’t have a lot of height,” Klaman said. “I want to see what shows up at try-outs rst … I wouldn’t want to pre-empt anything.”
Klaman is content in the knowledge that the youngDevilscomingthroughhavebeenableto learn from the “big ve”.
“ ey de nitely take a lot of experience from playing with the veterans,” Klaman said.
“As much as they learn from games, they learntjustasmuchjusttrainingwiththosegirls last year.
“ ey were pretty savvy – you learn a lot of smarts from people like that, things they do to makethegamealoteasier…itrubso onthem at training.”

Post-war America was a boom time for car production, with a desire for cars that were exciting as well as practical.
As early as 1951, General Motors and Ford started working on ‘sporty’ prototypes.
GM revealed the Chevrolet Corvette in 1953 and Ford soon followed suit with its rst underbird in 1954 (sold as a 1955 model). It’s been said with some conviction that the best thing about the Ford underbird was its name.
Compared with the Corvette, the underbird was also much more attractive. It had an interesting, if conventional, two-seater steel body shell with winding windows and an optional hardtop. And although it weighed 1285kg,itwasthesmallestAmericanFordbuilt for decades.
Ifthatdidn’tsayenoughabouttheAmerican car industry at the time, its dramatic lack of technical innovation con rmed it.
e underbird had been able to progress from prototype to production in only a few months because it was largely composed of components from other Ford cars.
But the engine was a di erent story: a new overhead valve 4.2-litre V8, which produced 120kW against the 100kW norm. at was quickly raised to 144kW for a three-speed manual version and 148kW for a two-speed automatic, both with gearchange on the steering column.
eexhaustnotehadthefamiliarburblethat only a V8 could produce.
In the US, customers queued up for the

underbird. Its styling was absolutely American. As a luxurious two-seater coupe it cost twice as much as a regular sedan and was heavily decorated with chrome. As Ford executives secretly planned a longer, lower, wider four-seater underbird, they used the ’56 model as an experiment to see if they could sell safety. It had a deep-dish steering wheel, padded dashboard and optional seatbelts, as well as dual exhaust pipes routed through the
over riders. e safety aspects fell at in the marketplace, but the American public loved the exhaust pipes, which reminded them of a Porsche, andtheybecametheheightoffashion.
Allthe1956modelT-birdshada‘continental’ spare wheel kit mounted behind the rear bodywork to liberate more space in an already vast luggage boot.
e fact that its overhanging weight made handling a little di cult seemed to be
of no concern. e underbird was a safe car with its new steering wheel, and portholes in the hardtop – claimed to improve visibility –were an option.
ere were tail ns for 1957 but that was the last year for the two-seater underbirds. In 1958 a completely di erent, longer, heavier, four-seater car was marketed, with the only sporty thing about it being the 224kW engine.
