Parking a pain in pocket

Wyndham council is cashing in on the city’s motorists by raking in more than $610,000 from parking nes so far this year.

Between January and October, the council’s parking o cers handed out 6346 nes – an increase of about 30 per cent on the same period in 2013 – and the council is owed $316,220 in unpaid nes.

Most offences were a result of vehicles being parked in spaces longer than the designated time limit or for stopping in a no-stopping zone.

The council was unable to disclose whichcarparkswere fininghotspots.

Train commuters are also being stung, with more than 600 parking fines issued at Werribee and Hoppers Crossing stations in 2014.

The Department of Transport, Planning and Local Infrastructure issuedthefinesforoffencesincluding not parking completely within a bay, stopping in a no-stopping area, parking in a disabled car space without a permit and stopping on a footpath.

Revenue from fines at train station car parks goes to the state government.

The council has long-term plans to transform the car park on the corner of Duncans Road and Synnot Street into a multi-storey precinct featuring retail, offices, apartments and extra parking.

Last year the council set aside $180,000 to seek expressions of interest for the development, which will be known as the Gateway project.

But many traders and residents are calling for a more immediate

x to ease central Werribee parking woes. Earlier this year, a group of 35 Watton Street landowners joined forces to urge the council to act “sooner rather than later” by building a multi-storey car park in Comben Drive.

e council has recently added 12 spaces on Comben Drive and 30 all-day spaces on Pyke Street.

‘‘

You wonder if people avoid coming into Werribee

’’
- Tonia Tribe

Werribee Chamber of Commerce president Tonia Tribe said the area’s parking shortage was hurting traders.

“ ere just isn’t enough [car parking],” she said.

“You wonder if people avoid coming into Werribee because they know it’s di cult to nd a car park, and that’s unfortunate.

“A multi-storey car park will make life easier for everybody, but I would also like to see the one-hour limits along Watton Street extended to two hours.

“I don’t think one hour is long enough to allow people to do their shopping and maybe have some lunch.”

Wyndham’s chief executive, Kerry ompson, said the council would continue to lobby the Department of Transport, Planning and Local Infrastructure to create more car-park spaces for commuters at both Werribee and Hoppers Crossing stations.

150 Wyndham turns

Wyndham’s rich history will be put in the spotlight during a family fun day to mark the municipality’s 150th anniversary. The event, at the Wyndham Civic Centre on Sunday, October 12, will chart Wyndham’s growth from a sleepy country town in 1864 to a bustling city.

Many in our community will know the Chirnside family were a pivotal force in shaping the area, but they may not know that Hume and Hovell came through the Werribee district on their way to Corio Bay in 1824, or that the Wyndham Racing Club was established in 1878. Another interesting fact is that Bungey’s Hole, a bend in the Werribee River, was once used for swimming carnivals. The celebration will also feature horse and carriage rides, old world games and a walk along the Werribee City Centre Heritage Trail. Wyndham Libraries will also provide a family history service, live entertainment and farmers market.

Two-year wait for easier drive

Point Cook residents will have better access to the Princes Freeway within two years, with construction of the Sneydes Road interchange to start next month.

e diamond interchange will give Point CookmotoristsalternativeaccesstothePrinces Freeway, making it easier for them to drive to Melbourne and Geelong.

e interchange will be built in two stages, with the Melbourne-bound lanes to be constructed rst. Work will then start on the Geelong-bound lanes, before the Sneydes Road bridge over the freeway is removed.

e project is part of a $72million government investment into transport and planning infrastructure at Point Cook and East Werribee.

Following a sod-turning ceremony for the projectlastweek,WesternMetropolitanLiberal MP Andrew Elsbury said the interchange was a “key piece of infrastructure” for the EastWerribeeEmploymentPrecinctandwould provideadditionaltransportlinksforWerribee and Point Cook.

Putting migrants on path to success

Ashoup Atar knows what it’s like to move to a country you know nothing about and where you have few people to support you.

Ms Atar moved to Australia from war-torn Sudan with her parents and siblings in 1998 when she was 14 years old.

Her parents dreamt of giving their children a better education and life in Australia, far away from the dangers of civil war.

Keen to live up to her parents’ dreams for her future, Ms Atar vowed to make a good life for herself by getting an education and helping other migrants and refugees.

Last Friday she launched Kowanj, a not-for-pro t group supporting African, Arabic and Paci c Islander people living in Melbourne’s west.

e organisation – named a er the Sudanese Arabic word for care – will run short courses, tutoring programs, parenting classes and support groups for young mothers, as well as crime prevention classes and health groups.

Ms Atar, a nutritionist who studied pharmaceutical science, wants to help others get a good education and live a fruitful life.

‘‘My experiences have spurred me into setting up a place where people can drop in and feel welcome and have someone listen to them,” she said.

“ is organisation will assist children who may not have a direction as such, or whose parents are struggling to nd help or people that speak their language and understand their culture. Kowanj will support people in their integration into Australian society. Without support you can lose your way.

‘‘ is will be a place where people from African and Paci c Islander communities can feel welcome, where they feel supported, empowered and understood.”

For more details, phone 9687 0840.

“ is is a critical road project for the city,” he said “ e residents of Point Cook have lobbied hard with us for transport infrastructure to keep pace with rapid residential growth.”

e government has also pledged $9.6 million to realign Hoppers Lane with the Princes Highway as well as funding to upgrade Sneydes Road.

e start of the interchange work follows the government’s request in June for expressions of interest from companies keen to develop the rst stage of the East Werribee precinct. e rst stage of the precinct will be 400 hectares and include a town centre and housing.

No tolerance for hoons

Seventy-seven vehicles were impounded in Wyndham as a result of hoon driving in the rst six months of 2014, according to police statistics.

While young drivers are widely considered the most likely to be hoons, the gures reveal that almost 65 per cent of the Wyndham o enders were 26 or older.

Only 13 of the 77 vehicles seized were from drivers aged 19 or younger, with most impounded vehicles being Holdens (22), followed by Fords (16) and Nissans(9).

RoadSafe Westgate Community Road Safety Council chairman Jim Giddings said plenty of people were still putting lives, including their own, at risk as a result of hoon driving.

“You only have to look at our streets and see the skid marks all over the road to see how much of a problem it is,” he said. “As a community, we need to take ownership of the problem and make sure we report hoon driving to police.”

Road policing assistant commisssioner Robert Hill said he was “taken aback” by the numbers of drivers caught breaking the law.

“People spend too much time leaving rubber on the road,” he said.

“I am staggered people of a mature age see that [hoon driving] as a pastime – a pastime they think is acceptable. Our toleranceleveltothattypeofbehaviouris very, very limited. We know the dangers these people pose on our roads.”

On board with bus plan

BuseswilloperatethroughSanctuaryLakesfor the rst time from next April.

e new service will run on weekdays along Sanctuary Lakes Boulevard and Point Cook Road to Laverton station.

Services will run every 40 minutes during peak times and 60 minutes at other times.

e new service follows feedback to Public Transport Victoria’s Wyndham Network Plan, whose architects sought submissions on proposed changes to the city’s bus routes.

Once implemented, the plan will provide Wyndham with more than 800 extra bus services a week, improving services in Wyndham Vale, Tarneit, Manor Lakes, Williams Landing and Point Cook.

e new services will coincide with the opening of Regional Rail Link stations at Wyndham Vale and Tarneit.

PTVsaidtheplanhadreceivedoverwhelming support from residents, with more than 400 people providing feedback.

A PTV spokesman said almost 80 per cent of residents supported the changes.

“Fi y per cent of residents said they would increase their use of public transport should the proposals be realised,” he said.

But residents were also fearful of the impact of Palmers Road tra c on the new Point Cook east-west route.

Western Metropolitan Liberal MP Bernie Finn said the Coalition would deliver all 800 new services if re-elected in November.

Mr Finn said the plan would provide Wyndham with more frequent and direct services on major routes, expanded coverage and strong connections with trains at the new stations and along the Werribee line. PTV is nalising the new network.

Game on for Tarneit reserve

People living near Tarneit’s Hummingbird Boulevard will have access to a new $2.2 million reserve from early next year.

Work will begin on the reserve this month a er Wyndham council awarded construction company Civilex Victoria the project contract two weeks ago. e reserve will have two rectangular sports elds, a cricket oval and a playground.

ere will also be seating areas and raised grassy mounds.

Work is expected to be nished early next year.

Sport, leisure and open-space portfolio holderCrPeterMaynardsaidthecouncil had endorsed the project in 2013 and since worked to incorporate in the plans the interests and requirement of sports people, spectators and the local community.

“ e new design for the reserve delivers a safe, attractive and functional public open space,” he said. “ e reserve will be a destination for all ages to meet, socialise and play sport.

“ e reserve will feature lowmaintenance, extensive tree planting and warm-season grasses to reduce the amount of irrigation required, and it will enhancethecharacterofthesurrounding area and the Davis Creek catchment.

“ ere will be a sports eld made with new soil and instant turf, and new irrigation, drainage, lighting and fencing.”

‘Bin it or swim in it’

Wyndham’s citizens are being urged to keep plastic o their beaches.

A clean-up at Point Cook Coastal Park in May revealed 70 per cent of the litter was plastic.

Wyndham council’s environmental sustainability portfolio holder, Peter Gibbons, said plastic was unsightly and deadly.

“Fish, dolphins, penguins, seabirdsandother marine animals can ingest plastic and die,” Cr Gibbons said.

“Plastic rings, netting and shing lines can choke penguins and seals. Recently, a platypus was found in the Werribee River with a plastic wristband caught around its neck.

“With summer coming on, it’s in everyone’s interests to have a litter-free beach. It’s a no-brainer; you bin it or swim in it.”

Cr Gibbons said the council and the Werribee River Association had applied for state government funding to map the performance of Wyndham’s stormwater litter traps along its waterways.

Cr Gibbons said the council’s litter prevention and reduction strategy also focused on identifying litter sources.

“For example, if a lot of shing line ends up on the beach, we may contact the local angling club to see if we can get the message out about not letting shing tackle litter the bay or rivers as it can be deadly for marine life,” he said.

CSIROseniorresearchscientistBrittaDenise Hardesty said that by 2050 an estimated 95 per cent of Australia’s seabirds would have plastic in their stomachs.

“ e throwaway culture ingrained in our society needs to change if we are to tip the scales back in favour of the wildlife in our oceans,” she said.

Health grants a great t

Grants of up to $5000 are on o er for programs aimed at improving the health of Wyndham residents.

A VicHealth survey found more than half thecity’sadultsareeitheroverweight or obese and less than a third get enough exercise.

Wyndham council’s Healthy Together grants, funded by the state government, will give individuals and groups the chance to develop new ideas to promote better health and well-being.

Mayor Bob Fairclough said the grants were open to anyone living, working or studying in the city.

“You don’t have to be a health expert; you just need energy and enthusiasm about improving local people’s health with a great new idea,’’ he said.

‘‘We will assist you to develop it and to apply for the grant.

‘‘ e aim is to get Wyndham locals involved in a range of di erent initiatives – activities like learning to grow vegetables at home, healthy cooking groups, quit-smoking support groups or a physical activity club.”

Two free workshops will be held this month to help applicants.

$5m boost for Wyndham’s roads

e federal government will spend more than $5 million in the next ve years to help build some of Wyndham’s biggest road projects.

e council has received $5.43 million from the government’s Roads To Recovery program.

Mayor Bob Fairclough said the council planned to spend $28.9 million on roads and pavements this nancial year and would put the Roads To Recovery funds towards some of those projects.

Included in the council’s roads budget for 2014-15 is $4.5 million to build Armstrong Road between Greens and Ballan roads, $1.76 million to upgrade Leakes Road between Tarneit and Davis roads, $1.25 million to build Black Forest Road between McGrath and Armstrong roads, and $1 million to upgrade the intersection of Forsyth and Leakes roads.

But Cr Fairclough said more government funding was needed to address the city’s infrastructure shortfalls.

Senator Michael Ronaldson said the funding would make a di erence in building roads, repairing streets and creating better access across the community.

“Roads To Recovery is set up for councils to make road spending decisions based on local needs – without interference from Canberra – to ensure that funding is truly directed to where it’s most needed,” he said.

“ e Roads To Recovery program enables councils to prioritise roads funding to invest in the infrastructure which keeps our drivers safe and strengthens economic growth.

Putting the fun in fundraiser

Hoppers Crossing’s Melissa Molina is throwing a party in a bid to raise money for cancer research.

e Zumba instructor will host ‘Party in Pink’ at Truganina YMCA Learning Centre on Saturday, October 25, to raise money for a global Zumba grant to fund research into breast cancer prevention.

Ms Molina says the fundraiser is a fun way to raise money to help the ght against one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers among women. It will be the second time Ms Molina has held an event for the Zumba research grant.

She said this year’s event was even more important to her because a family friend had recently been diagnosed with breast cancer and was going through chemotherapy.

She’s expecting about 100 people to take part this year.

“It will be a fun day. It’s a two-hour class, with face-painting, and I’ve had donations from businesses for a ra e,” Ms Molina said.

Party in Pink is from 9-11am on October 25. Tickets cost $10. Formoredetails,visitwww.facebook. com/ZumbaWithMelissaMolina.

Centre honours beloved mentor

Wyndham Community and Education Centre has created a lasting tribute to one of its teachers who died suddenly last month.

Sandy Mein, who taught the centre’s re-engagementclassforyoungpeoplewhohad le school and English-as-a-second-language classes for refugees, died on September 17.

While Mr Mein, 47, had achondroplasia, a condition that a ects the formation of cartilage, causing shortened limbs, it’s not known why he died.

‘‘ He wanted to make other people feel good about themselves ’’ - Graeme Mein

Upset by his death, Mr Mein’s students asked the centre to help them create a tribute to their teacher. It was decided to establish a scholarship fund in his name.

e fund will help a student attend classes at the centre next year. Mr Mein’s parents, Graeme and Margaret, have given the fund their support and are calling for donations.

“We were so moved by the idea. e nature of Sandy was to inspire others and we hope this will encourage his students to keep learning,’’ his father said. ‘‘He was very happy and cheerful and he wanted to make other people feel good about themselves.

‘‘He believed everyone had qualities within them that were worth developing.”

Margaret Mein said she was touched by the stories Sandy’s students had shared with his family in recent weeks, which told of their respect for him and the impact he had had on their lives, despite only teaching at the centre for about six months.

She said Sandy had previously worked in the Northern Territory, teaching indigenous adults who had missed out on an education.

“He saw how warm and lovely people were,’’ Margaret said.

‘‘He really encouraged his students to speak about themselves.’’

The arrival at Werribee Open Range Zoo of two new lions from Denmark has proved a roaring success. After being cleared by quarantine, Niribi and Nilo ventured out of their dens and started exploring their new surroundings last week. The zoo’s general manager of life sciences, Russel Traher, said that after a gradual introduction process, the lionesses would join male lion Johari to form a new pride. Mr Traher said the introduction process would continue in coming months as keepers gradually increased the level of visual and fence-to-fence contact between the lionesses and Johari.

Aged care anger grows

Sta and families of residents at Werribee’s South Stone Lodge are ramping up their ght against the psychogeriatric centre’s closure.

As reported by Star Weekly, North Western Mental Health (NWMH), one of the largest publicly funded providers of mental health services in Australia, plans to close the lodge at the end of the year.

It said the 30-bed centre had high vacancy rates and unsustainable nancial losses, and its residents, su ering from dementia and other mental health conditions, could be properly cared for in mainstream aged-care facilities with support from community outreach mental health services.

Families and sta disagree, believing many of South Stone Lodge’s residents will not be properly cared for in private nursing homes.

Tarneit Labor MP Tim Pallas has started a petition calling for the centre to remain open.

Mr Pallas said its closure would have a devastating impact on residents and their families and leave 39 sta members anxiously waiting to hear if they would be out of a job before Christmas. “Already, demand for agedcareservicesinthewestisoutstrippingsupply. Shrinking the public system is only going to make things worse,” Mr Pallas said.

Colleen Lowe is among those campaigning to keep South Stone Lodge open. Ms Lowe’s father Bob Harrison was cared for by the centre’s sta for more than two years. He died earlier this year.

Ms Lowe said she was devastated to learn the centre would close. “Not only did the sta care for my father, they loved him. He felt comfortable there. He knew the sta and he respected them,” she

Labor has dealt a major blow to Tony Abbott’s plans to cut the pension and increase the pension age to 70.

Last week in Canberra, Labor stood side by side with Lalor pensioners to block Tony Abbott’s unfair pension changes in the Senate.

This is good news not just for aged pensioners, but also for those on a disability, veterans or carers payments. Make no mistake if Tony Abbott gets his way he will cut the pension and he will increase the pension age to 70.

Under Tony Abbott, pensioners face having their pension cut by as much as $80 a week within ten years according to the Australian Council of Social Service (ACOSS).

I will continue to stand up for pensioners in Lalor by fighting to stop cuts to pensions, fighting to stop the GP Tax on doctor visits and fighting to stop increases to the cost of medicines.

TELL US WHAT YOU THINK.

At Powercor we are currently mapping out our future network plans and we want to hear from you whether we’ve got the right balance right between safety, reliability, growth and affordability.

During the past 18 months we’ve been talking to many customers and stakeholders through surveys, interviews, focus groups and regional forums, seeking feedback which will help shape and inform our priorities and meet customers’ expectations.

Our Directions and Priorities Consultation Paper brings together that feedback with an outline of our future plans. Now we want to see if our key directions and priorities are striking the right balance and we’re urging our customers and stakeholders to respond with a submission.

Our plans cover five main areas: protecting our customers and our network, maintaining reliability, growing with Victoria, networks for the future and making it easy for our customers.

The consultation paper outlines our plans and includes questions which can be used as prompts for feedback. Those who respond can choose which topics they want to comment on and provide any additional information or attachments.

Wyndham city LED’s the way

Almost 2500 residential street lights across Werribee, Hoppers Crossing and Wyndham Vale have been converted to energy-e cient LED globes as part of the Lighting the West project.

Last year, Wyndham council received a grant of almost $2.5 million from the federal government for the project that will convert 21,656 street lights across Wyndham, Hobsons Bay and Moonee Valley.

Afurther9650streetlightsacrossWyndham will be switched over in the next 18 months, with the changeover to reduce Wyndham’s greenhouse gas emissions by 84,000 tonnes.

Wyndham council’s environment and sustainability portfolio holder, Peter Gibbons, said the switch would save Wyndham $21millioninthenext20yearsthroughreduced

Werribee’s centre for friendship

If you’ve lived in Wyndham long enough, chances are you’ve visited ‘ e Cottage’.

Perhaps you took a pottery class, gained a quali cation, learned a new skill or once attended one of its many playgroups.

Since it opened in January, 1975, at 4 Synnot Street, the Werribee Community Centre (now Wyndham Community and Education Centre) has been connecting people with their community.

Although it has undergone many changes in its 40 years, it continues to transform lives.

Re ecting on the centre’s history in the lead-up to its birthday celebrations next week, chief executive Jennie Barrera said it had come a long way from the painting, pottery, spinning and macrame classes of the mid-1970s.

“It was initially formed a er a group of people got together to run playgroups,” she said. “A er that came the art and cra groups … in the 1980s we were registered as a TAFE provider and by the late ’80s and early ’90s we were teaching VCE English.

“ e centre has never been afraid to change depending on the community’s needs.”

Kay Burton started at the centre in 1985 as a playgroup leader.

“Back then, I was a primary school teacher and we were running three playgroups a day, ve days a week,” she said.

Ms Barrera said that by the mid-2000s, playgroup attendances had fallen by the wayside as more parents opted for full-time childcare.

“One of the biggest changes at the centre was the introduction of VCAL (Victorian Certi cate of Applied Learning) in 2005,” she said.

“By the late ’90s, more and more young people who hadn’t nished their schooling

were coming in wanting to do adult literacy and numeracy programs, so we became registered as a non-school provider and we’ve now had more than 600 people go through and complete year 12.

“Another measure of the centre’s growth is that we’re now delivering programs from 15 venues across Wyndham and Hobsons Bay. We used to heavily rely on volunteers, but now we have 80 full-time employees.”

In 1997, the centre became a registered training organisation. Now operating as the

not-for-pro t Wyndham Community and Education Centre, it delivers training courses and community programs as well as settlement services for migrant arrivals.

Ms Barrera said she was constantly amazed by some of the centre’s success stories.

“A young lad did VCAL with us a few years ago,” she said. “He had le mainstream schooling, but he completed his year 11 and year 12 studies and went to TAFE and is now studying law at university.

“One of our adult literacy and numeracy

students is now running an Afghan restaurant in Hoppers Crossing.”

Despite the centre’s changes, Ms Burton said its purpose remained the same.

“We do a survey every year and we ask what people got out of their course or program, and one of the most common answers is that they made friends,” she said.

Park history kept alive

Ten years ago, a group of like-minded people got together with the aim of enhancing the visitor experience at Werribee Park. ey came from di erent backgrounds, but they shared the same goal.

Today, the Friends of Werribee Park group continues to improve the visitor experience in many ways.

Using thegroup’s historiccostumecollection of fashion of the late 1800s – replicating the era when omas Chirnside built the sprawling 60-room Italianate-style mansion – some volunteers greet visitors, lead tours and teach children about the Victorian era.

Other volunteers dress as maids and set up costumes in the mansion, allowing visitors to also dress in heritage costumes and take photos. Another group is charged with helping to maintain the 140-hectare park, including the formal gardens surrounding the mansion.

Friends of Werribee Park president Lesley Knights said volunteers felt privileged to be part of a beautiful piece of history.

“We all enjoy working at the park and helping to keep the history of the mansion and surrounds alive, vital and relevant for our modern visitors,” she said. Ms Knights joined the group six years ago and has loved every minute of her work.

“It’s surprising how many people, even locals, still don’t realise this amazing place we have in our own backyard.”

Volunteers must be over the age of 16, pay a small annual fee and provide 10 hours work every two months. No experience is required. PastandpresentFriendsofWerribeeParkare beinginvitedtoacelebrationatthemansionon October16.Formoredetails,callHelenHopkins on 8734 5171.

The Victorian Government is investing in a world-class health system with high quality, modern hospitals and a highly skilled workforce.

The $34.7 million Werribee Mercy Hospital upgrade will increase mental health services in Melbourne’s west.

This new 54 bed acute mental health facility will provide 25 additional beds and replace 29 existing acute mental health beds.

This expansion will improve local access to mental health services and is one of many mental health projects being delivered across Victoria.

This is part of $4.5 billion of health infrastructure currently underway, delivering modern, high-quality health services for Victorians.

The Victorian Government has also invested $238.3 million over four years to employ an extra 1,000 doctors, nurses, midwives and allied health professionals and to train 35,000 health students each year. By investing in hospitals and people, we are building a world-class health system and a healthier Victoria. To find out more visit health.vic.gov.au

e $115million Bayside Rail Project will ensure modern X’Trapolis trains are running on the line by late next year.

State Public Transport Minister Terry Mulder said the new trains were worldclass.

“ ey will be stabled at Newport and have additional safety features such as CCTV cameras in every carriage, each one providing a direct video link to the train driver.”

Mr Mulder said the Newport train maintenance depot would also be upgraded.

Sleepers will be replaced, manual signals converted to automated signalling and two new sets of points installed to allow trains to move in and out more easily.

Public Transport Victoria chief executive Mark Wild said tracks, power supplies, signalling and overhead wiring were also being boosted so the new trains could operate on the line.

Mr Wild said works on the Werribee line would continue during a weekend closure of the Altona Loop on October19 and during evenings until early November.

Travel times could be extended by up to 20 minutes on weekends and 30 minutes on weeknights during the works.

Replacement buses will operate to and from Westona, Altona and Seaholme between October 19 and November 1. For details, phone 1800 800 007.

Bold new look adds bite

e Western Bulldogs have unveiled a new club logo, returning to the “full bodied” look formally adopted in the 1920s. e updated logo replaces the “robodog” introduced in the 1990s.

Speaking at yesterday’s unveiling at Spotswood’s Scienceworks, club president Peter Gordon said the “ erce” new logo captured the spirit of the club and its players.

“It was just three years ago we changed our playing jersey back to honour our past with the return of the hoops,” he said.

“ e new logo epitomises the character and the spirit of the club, its players and its attitude.

“We think it’s a really exciting time for the Western Bulldogs and we’re ready for a new visual identity.”

MY WYNDHAM

Having spent 30 years in the air force and 30 years living in Wyndham, Werribee resident and director of the RAAF museum at Point Cook, David Gardner, has plenty of local knowledge to share, writes Rebecca Miller

What’s your connection to the local community?

My wife and I have been living in Wyndham since 1984. We lived on the RAAF base at Point Cook until 1994 then bought in Werribee where we still live.

I’m director of the RAAF Museum at Point Cook and have been since 2000. Prior to that I was the senior curator [at the museum] and before that an aircra technician for 30 years. As director, I oversee the running of the museum including curatorial, collection management, public a airs and ying, among other things. I love everything about my job, particularly that we are presenting the rich fabric of the RAAF and allowing the public to see it.

I also volunteer at the museum restoring aeroplanes a couple of days a month. I’m a member of the Werribee Park Tourism Precinct which promotes Wyndham’s tourist attractions such as the zoo, mansion, Shadowfax Winery and the RAAF museum as well as taking action to improve our roads. WhatdoyourememberbeinginWyndham that’snolongerthere?

Open spaces. Point Cook used to be full of them and now it’s housing. e houses are growing like the vegies at Werribee South.

What’s your favourite eatery or best place togetco ee?

Wyndham Cache, Co ee Club at Point Cook Town Centre and Waterstone Café at Sanctuary Lakes. ey do a great brekkie and lunch, provide good service and parking.

What would you change in your neighbourhood?

Our roads and signage. ey’re severely lacking.

A lot of people, especially those new to the area, don’t know about the RAAF museum and I’d like to see more people visit.

It’s the oldest continually-operating base in the world and has been going since 1913. It’s also heritage-listed and free to visit.

Share a funny story while out and about in Wyndham.

My children went to school with children

from Italian families and I was having co ee with their friends’ Italian parents one day. ey made me a short black and I didn’t know what that was back then so I asked for a real co ee thinking it was weak. I ended up having the equivalent of three short blacks and, not surprisingly, had trouble sleeping that night.

Small step, a big deal

Werribee’s dairy research and development centre is opening its doors to Victoria’s small dairy processors to help them develop new products and innovative processing ideas.

Dairy Innovation Australia, opened on the Princes Highway about seven years ago, is fundedbythenation’sbiggestdairycompanies. e centre is responsible for testing and developing many of the yoghurts, cheeses and long-life dairy products we consume.

Its scientists and engineers research ways to improve dairy foods and pass their ndings on to dairy companies which use the information to create new foods or tweak existing products. e centre also helps the companies make their products in more e cient and sustainable ways, reducing water and electricity use and increasing value for money.

With the establishment of a small dairy network at the centre, businesses with less then 200 employees will have access to its facilities and experts.

Dairy Network Australia chief executive Lesley MacLeod said the network would help smaller businesses access the same services as larger companies.

“With the new network, small dairy manufacturing businesses will be able to access capability and facilities at Dairy Innovation Australia’s premier research and development provider for dairy manufacturing, and bene t from free workshops, site visits and participation in regional road shows,” Dr MacLeod said.

Out back, a paved area is ideal for entertaining this summer and has views of established gardens. Landscaped gardens also enhance the front yard which has a carport and ample additional off-street parking space. Werribee train station and secondary college and Heathdale Glen Orden Wetlands are nearby.

WERRIBEE

Rose Grange estate has a bit of prestige attached to it and this cracker of a house and garden (on about 1000 square metres) certainly earn their place here, more than matching the neighbours for style and substance. The star of the show is a wonderful outdoor room (more about that later), but support acts of four living spaces, great layout and sparkly presentation share the accolades.

An earthy Tuscan colour palette of terracotta in oor tiles, ochre and green on feature walls, is balanced with soft neutrals and elegant window furnishings to achieve a harmony of class and comfort. Surrounding gardens are a similarly nely tuned mix of formality, comfort and practicality.

Wrapped around a large living area, the four bedrooms, main bathroom and separate toilet are upstairs. One of the secondary bedrooms has a built-in robe and others have walk-ins. The main has twin robes behind an island wall, a concealed TV

spot and an open en suite with dual vanity basins, a spa and a big shower; it also opens to a balcony with city skyline views, a great spot during the annual reworks.

Downstairs, an open study and a double-entry lounge-dining room ank the entry hall which heads to the large, tiled family hub. A ceiling bulkhead de nes the sitting area where lovely garden views can be enjoyed, and there’s a separate tiled rumpus room – both these rooms access the outdoor room.

The kitchen has vinyl-wrap cabinetry, an island bench, walk-in pantry, dishwasher and a wall oven and induction cooktop wearing the Smeg label. The laundry has storage space and there’s a powder room.

The huge, fully enclosed outdoor room, when combined with the stunning gardens, is big and beautiful enough to stage anything, from a wedding to a relaxed family barbecue. It has downlights, two ceiling fans, surround-sound system, a big

day bed and even a small stage for a band, but it’s the two sets of bifold doors to a lovely, totally private courtyard garden that put the ring in the ding. A water feature, a pair of weeping cherries encircled by iron seating, a bird feeder and a sandpit beneath thatching are beautifully put together. A side garden is equally lovely, with another water feature and brush mat fence screens. A shadehouse, storage and garden sheds and water tanks are screened; a large workshop (able to house a boat) is rendered to continue the impeccable aesthetics; side double gates access concrete parking space and the workshop; and there’s a remote-controlled triple garage with internal access.

All this bounty is 20 minutes from the city (off-peak), six minutes from the station and around the corner from everything Tarneit has to offer.

New Zealand’s far east uncorked

Spring is in the air but it will be a while before chilledwhitesarearegularfeatureatthedinner table. Until then, elegant reds such as gamay, pinot noir and cool-climate shiraz will be on high rotation at my place.

I’ve recently been doing my bit for trans-Tasman trade and drinking syrah from Hawkes Bay.

It’s a huge wine region on the east coast of New Zealand’s North Island and is about 350 kilometres long and 80 wide, with a range of di erent micro-climates where just about anything goes, and grows.

Hawkes Bay chardonnay is intense and elegant, while its cabernet blends are regarded as some of the best in the new world. But, for me, the star is syrah.

“With syrah, it’s mainly planted to the Gimblett Gravels and in what’s called the red metal triangle, or Bridge Pa area, which is next to Gimblett Gravels, with di erent soils and a slightly cooler climate,” says Hawkes Bay pioneer John Hancock.

“If you look at the Gimblett Gravels soils, they’re quite similar to the soils of the northern Rhône – river gravels – except that we’re at and they’re on the slopes. Most of the slopes in HawkesBayareunsuitableforgrowing grapes.”

In Hawkes Bay, syrah, the same variety as shiraz, produces elegant, medium-bodied reds with spice, red and black fruit characters and silky texture. It is o en co-fermented with viognier, anorthernRhônetechniquethatadds perfume and depth of avour.

Motoring

As is o en the case, the story behind the wines is as good as the wines themselves.

Syrah was rst planted in Hawkes Bay about 1900 but a short-lived period of irting with prohibition in New Zealand a ected the wineries’ pro tability, forcing them to close.

“When the soldiers returned from World War I [support for prohibition declined] and it never got back in … Up until maybe 20 years ago it was voted for at every election whether New Zealand would essentially have prohibition or not,” Hancock says.

It wasn’t until the 1980s that syrah was given another chance in Hawkes Bay, when Alan Limmer bought land on the Gimblett Gravels and planted syrah. He called his winery Stonecro .

“Alan was working at a research station in the Waikato, and the New Zealand collection of grapevines was based there. ey were being ripped out and he rescued a row of syrah and that was what started syrah in New Zealand,” says Hancock, who started Trinity Hill in 1993.

In the 1980s, land on Gimblett Gravels sold for just $500 an acre (4000 square metres) – its deep gravel and shingle soils, known as greywacke, were deemed no good for traditional farming. But, as its short history now shows, the Gimblett Gravels were ideal for growing grapes, especially shiraz, which needs heat and sunshine to ripen.

“[ e soil is] dark grey in colour, which radiates the heat into the night and that’s why we can grow things in the gravels that we couldn’t grow elsewhere – it keeps things ripening longer,” Hancock says.

Moore, Tigers a match made in heaven

Jarred Moore and the Werribee Football Club was initially a marriage of convenience.

Moorewasdippinghistoesintocoachingand development with AFL club North Melbourne, and its VFL alignment with the Tigers o ered anavenueforthehard-at-itonballertocontinue plying his trade as a footballer.

Neither party could have expected the honeymoon period to last so long.

Moore has become only the eighth player in the club’s 50-year history to claim multiple Bruce Montgomery trophies for best-and-fairest in the seniors.

e 28-year-old is only the third player to achieve the feat in consecutive seasons, a mark of his consistency in the two years he has been with the club.

“ ere’s de nitely some good players there and it’s an honour to be recognised with some of those names,” he said. “I really wanted to get going with coaching and to play some good footy in that time is a bonus.”

Moore has enjoyed a decorated career. Starting out with the Dandenong Stingrays in the TAC Cup, he was selected by Sydney with pick 31 in the 2004 national dra . He managed 68 games for the Swans between 2005-11 and kicked 52 goals.

Moore arrived at Werribee in 2013 to launch a coaching career as a playing mid eld coach. He’s o ered a veteran presence to a young line-up and led by example on the eld.

He pipped mid elders Jye Bolton and Michael Sodamaco for the Tigers’ top honour

and said they were “sti ” a er missing games through injury.

“ at’s where I’m at in my career, just trying to help these young blokes come through,” Mooresaid.“It’sgreattoseesomeimprovement out of them.”

Moore’s playing future is up in the air.

e veteran will hold discussions with head coach John Lamont to discuss whether he ts into his 2015 plans.

“I’ll have to sit down with JL and gure out what’s best for me and what’s best for the club,” Moore said. “I still love the game, that hasn’t changed, but there’s still some conversations to be had before we get across there.”

Steady onballer shines

Werribee Districts co-captain Matt Dean is not blessed with in-your-face ashes of brilliance that will leave you gushing a er watching him play.

e Barry Priest Medal winner’s value to the Tigers is more important than a highlight-reel hog because he’s an ever-present four-quarter performer who delivers week in, week out.

Dean does the dirty work that a lot of teammates would prefer to delegate, earning the hard ball in the clinches and starting o a play.

e 25-year-old is a tireless worker defensively with his tackling, smothering and harrying a feature.

Dean didn’t expect to have the medal for best-and-fairest in division 1 bestowed on him at the WRFL’s night of nights last Friday night. But it was nothing short of what he deserved for a ne season. Dean le everything out on the park and coach Wade Chapman couldn’t have asked for more.

In a league full of quality, o ensive-minded onballers, it was good to see a solid two-way player take out the top honour.

Dean made a late dash to the line, polling two best-on-grounds in the last three rounds to edge out ruckmen Wayde Skipper (Hoppers Crossing) and Joel West (St Albans).

“I’mnotusuallyonethatcatchestheumpires’ eye,” Dean said.

“When I realised I was in the top 10 with three rounds to go, it was a bit of a shock.

“I knew I sort of had a good nish to the season and I was lucky enough to poll in those three games, which got me over the line.”

Dean is the rst to admit that if you’re looking for a player to provide a large package of highlights, you’re barking up the wrong tree.

Nor are you likely to nd him bobbing up for a match-winning goal, with only ve for the season, with Dean preferring to leave the goalkicking to the proli c Chris Molivas, Andrew Panayi and Ryan Harrington.

“ ere’s not one thing in my game that would stand out, to be honest,” he said.

“I like to think of myself as hard working and I pride myself on pressure and tackling and chasing.

“I’m more a defensive mid elder than attacking.”

Until two years ago, Dean was a tight checking defender who could o er some run out of defence.

He’s turned himself into an elite mid elder in the space of 24 months.

Named in the Tigers’ best 18 of a possible 21 times, Dean was far and away the most consistent player in the competition.

He put it down to maturity, understanding his haves and have nots as a footballer.

Having seven preseasons under his belt also helped tune up his motor. “As you get older, you become more comfortable with your own game, you’re more aware of your strengths and weaknesses,” he said.

Dean was one of a number of loyal homegrown Tigers who took the club to the WRFL nals in their rst season since crossing from the Victorian Amateur Football Association.

Like many of his teammates, he rst played for the club in the under-9s and gets a thrill out of playing alongside lifelong friends.

“I’ll be there as long as I can,” Dean said.

“It’s close to home and all the people I played with in juniors have come up as well.

“We’re all pretty closeknit and that’s not just at the footy club, it’s all through the year.

rough the summer we all catch up.”

■ I believe local football is at the crossroads and some of the decisions made in the next few weeks will be crucial to the future of many football clubs. In the WRFL, with which I’m involved, I can see agreements for promotion and relegation. A few years ago I had a conversation with Mark McGoldrick after Deer Park won a Division 2 ag. He was adamant the club wasn’t ready to go up and he was correct. But look where his club is now, the powerhouse of the WRFL. Nobody, and I mean, nobody really knows where a club is at in terms of strength of the committee, ability to raise money for players, other than someone at the club. On- eld results at one level do not equate to being competitive when you have to go up a step. And it’s not just one step ... the jump between divisions 1 and 2 is enormous in terms of dollars, talent and commitment. Some players don’t want to make that transition and neither do some volunteers. And I don’t blame them. The truth is, the survival of so many clubs depends on winning games and giving a positive experience to everyone involved. Competitions will need to take that into consideration in the future. Expansion is good, but it needs to be thought out carefully. Why not guarantee clubs a certain amount of time in the next level? This would allow them to recruit past the ends of their noses and not just for a quick x.

■ What a weekend for Matthew Dean, of Werribee Districts Football Club and Werribee Cricket Club. On Friday night he walked away from Moonee Valley Racing Club with a Barry Priest Medal around his neck as the WRFL umpires’ B&F player. Less than 12 hours later, he captained Werribee Cricket Club rst XI in the rst game of the season and scored 108. He’s an exceptional sporting talent but, more than that, an exceptional young man. Another Districts boy, Tyler Crennan, took out the footy Rookie of the Year award.

■ The rst round of the 2014-15 Athletics Shield competition is coming up at Hoppers Crossing VU track this Saturday. The main attraction will be at 4pm, when Morgan Mitchell will compete in the 400 metres. Mitchell is a national championship gold medallist. The men’s 100 metres will be another highlight, with the appearance of local Luke Stevens, a winner at the Stawell Gift last year.

Edrich puts his past at service of the Centrals’ future

It was a touch over 26 degrees in Melbourne on Saturday, perfect weather to don the cricket whites, but the Victorian Turf Cricket Association ordered a weekend o because of unprepared wickets.

e extended preseason may have o ered Aaron Edrich an extra seven days to prepare for his rst full season in charge as coach of Werribee Centrals in the west A1 division, but those who cut short school holidays to be in town for the rst day of the cricket season were frustrated.

“It’s been the same for as long as I can remember that they decide on the week a er the AFL grand nal and the grounds are never ready,” Edrich said. “It ba es all of us, to be honest.”

Edrich has enjoyed a stellar 20-year senior cricket career since getting his start as a teenager in the Victorian country town of Portland.

He was long on the radar of metropolitan district clubs before nally making the move to Premier Cricket.

In his two seasons at district level, Edrich got to spearhead the Melbourne bowling attack, includingtakingthenewballinadistrictgrand nal loss to St Kilda.

Edrich had always kept a keen interest on how Victoria performed in the shield and in his mid-20s got the chance to play alongside the likes of Brad Hodge, Shane Harwood and Andrew McDonald.

It was a dream scenario for a kid from the country and while it was short-lived, he will treasure that time for the rest of his life.

“I was quite surprised to be thrown the ball toopenthebowlingforMelbournedistrictones and it was a bit daunting at rst, I must admit,” Edrich recalled.

“To play among them and some of the other stars of Victorian cricket was unbelievable.”

For all the big opening bowler has done in his cricket career, it was only last year that Edrich got the chance to become player-coach of Centrals.

Now35,he’sreadytoimparthisknowledgeof the game to the youngsters coming up through the ranks.

“I’ve been playing senior cricket for 20 years; tohaveacoachingroleisadi erentexperience,” he said.

“I remember when I started o in my early 20s, looking up to the blokes who were in their 30s. ey passed on their knowledge and I’m more than happy to pass on my knowledge to the young blokes.”

e rst task for Edrich was to nd a capable rst XI captain. He handed the reins to highly rated young top-order batsman Nick Sardi.

“He’s got a really good cricket head on his shoulders,” Edrich said.

Bees’ hot shot steps up

WerribeehaselevatedteenagesensationJayden

Christie to the important role of skip for the No.1 side in Bowls Victoria men’s division 1.

Christie has been a revelation for the Bees and stamped himself as a future star when named in Australia’s under-18 squad last week.

Bees player-coach Snowy Barker said it was a no-brainer to hand the brightest young prospect at the club the reins to one of the four rinks.

“His ability is so good,” he said. “ e lead-up games I’ve seen him play in have just been unbelievable.”

e Bees will put support around Christie to ensure he learns the role the right way and

is not thrown in at the deep end to fend for himself. He will be able to sponge information from fellow skips Barker, Rob Panton and Mick O’Neill, while Dave Kelly, veteran of the side, has been strategically placed in Christie’s rink at third to be a sounding board.

“He’ll be a mentor in a way,” Barker said. “He’s had over 40-odd years experience so the structure will be there behind him.”

Christie is the only change in the skips, with the other three “locked and set” from last season. e rest of the side, however, is another matter.

e Bees will again be forced to ll a number of voids in their top side.

“We’re going to be playing a lot of new blokes,” Barker said.

“We’ve again lost four or ve out of the top side, but we’ll just keep whacking away, front up again, enjoy ourselves and see what happens.”

It is too early for Barker to o er up an expectation for the summer.

Onenon-negotiableistowinthevastmajority of games on their home track at Watton Street.

“We expect to win at home, same as last year,” Barker said.

Sofar, sogood, astheBeesmadea yingstart at home with a 93-61 win over Lilydale in the season opener on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Hoppers had a miserable start to life in division 2, losing 84-54 to Werribee (2).

It was Ian Andrew’s rst game as coach of Hoppers.

“I can see him taking the next eight to 10 years and taking a few of the younger blokes with him.

“He’s a quality bat, he’s got all the shots in the world, but he’s got the temperament to go with it, too.”

Gutsy Longitude doesn’t hold back

A local car dealer lamented how the SUVs in his brand’s range don’t have the “driveway cred” of the Jeep Cherokee.

A er years as a fringe dweller in Australia’s highly competitive SUV market, the Cherokee has experienced a steady rise in popularity thanks to its rugged appeal and e ective marketing campaign.

I was pretty excited to test drive the new base-model two-wheel-drive Jeep Cherokee Sport but found that it’s driveway credibility and aesthetic appeal were pretty much the only things that set it apart from its Japanese and Korean competitors.

It’s a nice enough vehicle to drive. e ride is smooth, the suspension set between rm and so in a way that Goldilocks’ would approve. e 2.4-litre, 4-cylinder engine pulls it along OK but protests a little when you put the foot down.

It has a 7-inch touch screen with Chrysler’s U-Connect system that brings together media, phone, climate control and reverse camera in a user-friendly way.

is is a nice, features-packed 2WD SUV for people who want something more than a station wagon, and it’s good value at $35,000.

But if you want something more in keeping with Jeep’s “don’t hold back” image you only need go one up in the Cherokee range.

e eloquently named Longitude costs $5000 more than the Sport, but for that you get four-wheel-drive and a gutsy 3.2-litre, six-cylinder engine amongst other features.

I liked this so much I drove it to Sydney!

Techy stuff 4WD, 3.2 litre petrol engine, 9-speed automatic Fuel economy I averaged around 10L/100km around town and 7.9L/100kms on the freeway

e extra power made it feel like a bigger car. It thinks it’s a V8 but has reasonable fuel economy. It even has a sports-car-like throaty note when you put the foot down and there’s a seamless shi through the nine-speed automatic transmission.

e Longitude also has a ‘Selec-Terrain’ traction control system, which lets you choose between on- and o -road settings including Auto, Snow, Sport, Sand/Mud. On the road it handles nicely and is comfortable to drive.

e seats have electronic settings, including lumbar adjust, and I felt great a er a day in the saddle.Iwasevenlookingforwardtothereturn trip.

e back seats are roomy with plenty of head and legroom and there’s ample storage including a deep centre console and a clever space under the front passenger seat cushion.

e Longitude’s standard features include roof rails, automatic headlamps, rain-sensing wipers, 17-inch alloy wheels and leather trim. It also has an option for the 8.2-inch

U-Connect screen that includes satellite navigation providing clear direction. e elephant in the room with the new Cherokee range (which includes the higher priced Limited and Trailhawk models) is its shark-like front, which seems to divide people.

I liked the big grille of the previous models, but I’ve come around. I reckon it looks best with darker colours.
