Werribee South has been le in the lurch by changes to Wyndham’s bus network, withcommuterswaitingupto 60 minutes for bus arrivals.
In July, Public Transport Victoria announced new services and frequencies would be introduced across the city from early next year to coincide with the opening of the $4.3 billion Regional Rail Link in April.
e changes will include eight Wyndham routes running every 20 minutes during the weekday peak.
Five direct bus routes will operate between Werribee, Hoppers Crossing and Williams Landing train stations and the new Wyndham Vale and Tarneit stations along Ballan, Tarneit, Derrimut, Morris and Sayers roads.
An east-west route through Point Cook from Laverton to Hoppers Crossing stations will be reintroduced. But bus frequencies on routes such as the 439 to Werribee South via Werribee Park have already been pushed out to 60 minutes, the same frequency as the 443 from Werribee along Russell Street and Wattle Avenue.
IramoowardcouncillorPeterMaynard said the 60-minute frequencies were insulting.
“It’s not acceptable,” he said. “ ere is no way this would be tolerated in the eastern suburbs. ey would demand 20-minute buses.”
Wyndham council last week opted to endorse PTV’s changes, subject to consideration being given to the introduction of a direct bus route from rst to last train between Wyndham Vale and Werribee stations, demand-responsive buses in areas not serviced by regular routes or for early
or late night services, and an extension of the Green Orbital Smartbus route to Werribee.
Council growth and infrastructure portfolio holder Glenn Goodfellow said Wyndham’s bus network was among the least direct in Melbourne.
“Evenwiththepoorfrequency, patchy coverageandrestrictedhoursofservice; bus usage is higher than average and patronage has doubled in recent years.”
‘‘ We would argue for a more exible service ’’ - Chris Higgs
Cr Goodfellow said. “[PTV’s] proposal tohavemoredirect, frequentandlonger hours of service along main roads has a drawback; it means over 15,000 homes will be more than 800 metres from a bus route.”
With only one of the Wyndham’s existing six bus routes running until 9pm, Wyndham Transport Advocacy Committee chairman Chris Higgs said extended operating hours or a demand-responsive service with commuters able to ag the night before iftheyrequiredanout-of-hourspick-up, were a must.
“According to PTV, there’s been low patronage on buses in Werribee South –that’s where we would argue for a more exible service,” he said.
PTV spokeswoman Helen Witton saidWyndham’srevampedbusnetwork would provide a signi cant increase in overall frequencies, especially at peak times.“Inmostcases, whereano -peak frequency of 60 minutes might apply, anotherrouterunningevery20minutes will be nearby,” she said.

Geeks and their alter-egos are taking over Point Cook’s Brook On Sneydes on Friday to help ght cancer. The ultimate sci- and fantasy trivia challenge, organised by Point Cook Geeks, including Mace Gee (above), is a chance for people to show off their inner geek and raise money for the Cancer Council’s Relay for Life. The event, starting at 7.30pm, will feature a cosplay competition, with participants encouraged to dress up as their favourite superheroes or sci- characters, and a ‘fan art expo’, including models made by locals. Tickets cost $20 for adults, while children under 12 can attend for free. Details: pcgtrivianight.eventbrite.com.au

An average of one Wyndham family a day is being issued with a warrant for eviction from a rental property as low-income earners struggle with the cost of living in an outer suburb.
Figures from the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal reveal that in the 2013-14 nancial year, 361 “warrants for possession” were issued for rental properties in Wyndham. Tarneit had the highest number of warrants, with 96 granted by the tribunal.
Wyndham tops the Victorian warrant gures, with Brimbank the next-highest with 338.

Wyndham Legal Service manager Denis Nelthorpe said Wyndham had one of the highest warrant of possession rates in the state. He said people moved into the area because it was regarded as having cheap rents, but many families found that the cost-of-living in Wyndhamwasuna ordable, withbillsforcars, petrol and CityLink adding up.

Manor Lakes residents have lost their bid to have the estate recognised as a suburb. Wyndham council received a petition from the Manor Lakes Residents Association in September last year calling for the change from Wyndham Vale, despite the use of estate and commercial titles – such as Manor Lakes – not complying with state government naming guidelines.

In June, the council referred the request to the O ce of Geographic Names (OGN) seeking an exemption to the guidelines, but this was denied. A report presented to last Monday’s council meeting revealed the OGN wrotetothecouncillastmonthacknowledging community support for the name change and the association’s 1050-signature petition, but it ruled the principles of the naming guidelines
were “fundamental in ensuring public safety, provision of emergency services and the delivery of goods and services”.
Iramoo ward councillor Peter Maynard said he was stunned by the decision, saying there was already a secondary college, medical centre and street signs carrying the Manor Lakes name. He encouraged the community to continue its campaign.

were too scared to complain about the notices because they didn’t have enough money to pay their rent or they thought the tribunal would rule against them.
He is calling on the state and federal governments to do more to prevent people being issued with warrants of possession.
“ is is impacting on families. Schools tell us that parents are turning up and saying that they need to take their children out of school,”
Mr Nelthorpe said.

Wyndham women are being urged to do more to reduce their risk of developing cervical cancer, with new statistics revealing the city has one of the lowest pap screening rates in Victoria.
Cancer Council data shows that only 49.6 per cent of Wyndham women were screened in 2011-12, the latest year for which statistics are available.
e city had the third-lowest rate of screening in the state, behind Melbourne (45.7 per cent) and West Wimmera (47.7 per cent). e state average is 60 per cent.
PapScreen Victoria manager Hiranthi Perera said Wyndham’s large migrant population could be a factor in the city’s low screening rate.
“ ere is quite a high proportion of people living in Wyndham who were born overseas in countries where English is not the rst language, so they might not understand the messages around screening,” she said.
“We have been doing a lot of work with culturally and linguistically diverse communities to increase screening rates.

Racing up 1642 stairs to the top of Melbourne’s tallest building on a Sunday morning isn’t everybody’s idea of fun.
But for Werribee CFA members Dominic Tri lo, Scott Menzies, Dominique May and Matt Mannix, taking on 88 oors as part of the Eureka Climb on November 16 is an eagerly anticipated challenge.
e climb is billed as one of the highest vertical races in the world. Entrants can walk, run or climb their way to the tower’s skydeck – a 300-metre elevation – as individuals or in teams of four.
It will be the Werribee CFA team’s fourth attempt a er being placed among the top 10 emergency services teams in 2013.
As part of their training, the four reys have been seeking out stairs far and wide.
Mr Menzies said the while the event was a perfect opportunity for re ghters and emergency services to test their tness, the climb was open to everybody.
“It’s about the challenge to push yourself
to get up there and you can go at your own pace,” he said. “As re ghters, we regularly have to go up stairs as part of our job, so for us it’s not only great training but also a team-building exercise.”
e event raises funds for Whitelion, which supports vulnerable young people, and Interplast Australia and New Zealand, which works to improve the quality of life for people disabled as a result of congenital or acquired medical conditions.
e Eureka Climb will also feature an emergency services challenge, with entrants competinginprotectiveclothingandbreathing apparatus.

Wyndham council has revamped its community grants program.
Priority will be given to projects to be completed within 12 months and no projects will be funded for more than three years. e move follows a comprehensive review of the program to ensure it continues to meet the needs of the community.
erevisedprogram, endorsedbycouncillors on September 22, includes six grants categories ranging from $500 to $50,000.
As part of the changes, more support will be providedtoapplicants, includingopportunities to discuss applications with council sta and free grant-writing and project management workshops. While priority will be provided to projects to be nished or self-su cient within 12months,therewillbeprovisionforrecipients to apply for funding for a further two years.
Iramoo ward councillor Peter Maynard said that under the previous community grants program, the council had become a “cash cow” for some organisations. e changes would ensure funding recipients were more accountable and also provided with appropriate support.
Mayor Bob Fairclough said the program would o er a broad range of funding options.
“ ere’s an increased emphasis on projects that will help the city to deliver its strategic
objectives in relation to improved health and wellbeing outcomes, as well as greater environmental sustainability,” he said.
“For the rst time ever, individuals will also be able to apply for up to $500 to undertake small grassroots projects that help to build positive connections between neighbours or creativelyenhancelocalenvironmentsthrough direct community action and activity.”

A 23-year-old Seabrook man yesterday appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates Court charged with funding a US citizen to ght with a terrorist organisation in Syria.
Hassan El Sabsabi was arrested at his home a er more than 100 Victoria Police and Australian Federal Police o cers raided seven properties in ve suburbs at 6.45am the same day.
Search warrants were executed at homes in Seabrook, Broadmeadows, Flemington, Kealba and Meadow Heights as part of Operation Honensalzburg.
Police seized a large number of electronic devices, including computers and hard drives.
e raids by the joint counter-terrorism team were the culmination of an eight-month investigation involving the FBI.
Before the court appearance, Australian Federal Police Assistant Commissioner Neil Gaughan said it was alleged El Sabsabi transferred $12,000 to an American man he knew from social media and that he intended to transfer further funds.
Hesaidpoliceallegedheintentionallymade funds available to a terrorist organisation, knowing it was a terrorist organisation.
“We will allege the organisation was a proscribed terrorist organisation,” Assistant Commissioner Gaughan said.
“We further allege the man provided approximately $12,000 in funds to support a US citizen currently ghting in Syria.
‘‘Wehavegoneearliertoday[Tuesday]aswe are of the view that further funds were about to be transferred to the person in Syria.
“Today was an overt action to resolve the matter. is is the rst time in a terrorism environment that we’re aware that an

Australian citizen has sponsored or paid for a citizen of another country to go into Syria or Iraq to ght.”
Assistant Commissioner Gaughan stressed there was no information or intelligence to indicate the man was involved in planning an attack.
He said El Sabsabi was believed to have been operating by himself. e raids were not connected to Numan Haider, 18, who was shot dead by police outside Endeavour Hills police station a er injuring two o cers with a knife.
Victoria Police Deputy Commissioner Graham Ashton said the raids were conducted in a “low-key manner” because there had been no threat to the community.
“ is is a terrorism nancing case,” he said.
“We didn’t assess there being a signi cant community safety risk or signi cant risk to our o cers.”
He said no explosives, rearms or weapons were seized. El Sabsabi made no application for bail and was remanded in custody until February 7.
e Environment Protection Authority has given Wyndham council until next year to reduce gas emissions and the levels of liquid leaching from its Werribee land ll.
e authority issued the council with two pollution abatement notices in June in relation to pollution of groundwater and elevated land ll gas surface emissions at the Wests Road site.
Should the council fail to comply, it faces nes of up to $300,000 for each o ence and $150,000 for each day the breaches continue.
Western Region Environment Centre director Harry van Moorst said he was still concerned by conditions at the tip.
“Council has clearly broken the rules and the EPA has been far too generous in giving it such a lengthy period to comply,” he said.
e council’s chief executive, Kerry ompson, saiditwasworkingtocomply with the EPA’s requirements.
“Council’s own monitoring ... identi ed that the levels of leachate and land ll gas [methane] emissions were above EPA requirements,”she said.
“Council reported this to the EPA and two Pollution Abatement Notices were issued. Council has until January 30, 2015tobecompliant...andweanticipate work to be completed well before the deadline.” EPA spokesman Terry Se on con rmed the council was meeting the conditions attached to the notices.

Iwas interested to watch the Julia Gillard Special with Ray Martin on Channel 9 the other night because she’s our former federal MP in Lalor, a former Prime Minister and someone I have met on numerous occasions. She was promoting her book, My Story, and I have no problem with that. My problem, and Julia is certainly not unique here, was the di erence between the person I know and the one we saw on television. Politicians have media advisers who teach them how to deal with the press. Wrong. Don’t deal with the press; be yourself. e Julia I know is likeable and engaging. She’s cheeky, self-e acing and down to earth. e one I see on television is stern, evasive, territorial and contrived. e Julia I have met is tactile, and, yes, I have kissed a Prime Minister on the cheek on more than one occasion (Julia, not Kevin). Julia’s body language on TV makes it look as if she’s wearing a bullet-proof vest that will explode if the interviewer comes within cooee. Other representatives at all levels of government su er from it, too. is isn’t about politics,
as such, but about the political machine that turns normal people into political animals. I want to be represented by a human being, not a political animal. Image means nothing to me; substance does. I’d say to all those lining up for council positions, state government seats this November or federal politics – be a real person, not a political animal. You’ll be better for it and so will we, your constituents. Your thoughts are welcome.

Until a few months ago, Sophie Radburn was a typical eight-year-old girl with a big smile and infectious personality.
en her parents, Scott and Rita, noticed mild changes in her behaviour.
ey were concerned enough to see a doctor.
“She started walking strangely and lost interest in school,” Mr Radburn said.
“It reached the point where she went to sit on the couch and nearly fell.”
A er a series of specialists were unable to shed light, Sophie underwent a series of tests at the Royal Children’s Hospital. What followed was every parent’s nightmare.

Sophie, of Wyndham Vale, was diagnosed with pilocytic astrocytoma, a brain tumour which typically a ects children.
“It was heartbreaking,” Mr Radburn said.
“We were told it [the tumour] probably rst presented as a wonky eye about a year earlier, and had the optometrist looked at the back of her eye he would have seen it.”
Sophie had emergency brain surgery in June and facesafurther18monthsofchemotherapy.
“Unfortunately, the tumour is the same colour as brain tissue so they can’t risk taking it out,” Mr Radburn said. “She’s started chemotherapyandwe’rewaitingforascannextmonth to nd out if it’s working.”
e ordeal has taken its toll on the family, with Mrs Radburn quitting her job to look a er Sophie and Mr Radburn only just starting to return to work as a truck driver.
“Sophie needs permanent care,” Mr Radburn said. “She can’t go out and play like other children because parts of her skull are now only two millimetres thick; she’s very fragile. e rst time her mum brushed her hair and it started falling out was shattering. We knew

it would happen, but that didn’t make it easier.”
Mr Radburn said the support for Sophie had been overwhelming. “Her school, Our Lady of the Southern Cross primary, has been unbelievable, as have my wife’s workmates at Coles Werribee Central, who made little Sophie badges,” he said.
Front Up Freestyle, a group of Wyndhambased motorcycle stunt riders, has thrown its support behind Sophie and her family, raising $2250 at a show last month.

Sanctuary
and taken to the Wests Road land ll.
Sanctuary Lakes Resort general manager Tony Ferreri said disposing of the grass at the tip was costing residents about $100,000 a year. So the resort splashed out $320,000
to buy a special sea grass harvester, a sort of underwater lawn mower.
It collects the grass and improves the quality of the water in the 60-hectare lake by keeping the grass at the desired height.
Mr Ferreri said the trial at Melbourne Zoo involved combining the sea grass with other waste to create compost for gardens.
Some of the sea grass will also be taken to a small Geelong-based manufacturer of garden fertiliser. “Chemicals and pollution
from upstream, combined with hot water, can stimulate rapid growth of the sea grass and the formation of algal blooms,” Mr Ferreri said.
“ e lake requires a constant program of underwater mowing and collection, together with monthly monitoring of water samples.
“A healthy amount of sea grass assists with absorption of nutrients in the water, which reduces the severity of algal bloom.”

Classic cars and motorbikes are about to roar into town for Werribee’s fourth annual Show ’n’ Shine on Sunday. Showcased will be everything from pre-1985 Australian and American muscle, classic and vintage cars to hotrods and custom motorbikes, with all funds raised going to Cancer Council Victoria. Organiser Nicholas Furnari, of Hoppers Crossing, was inspired to rally behind the cause after his mother was diagnosed with bowel cancer three years ago; she has successfully fought off the disease. The Show ’n’ Shines have raised more than $63,000 to support the charity’s programs and support services. This year’s event will include children’s activities, food vendors and a sausage sizzle. Students at Hoppers Crossing Secondary College have broken down cultural, linguistic and gender-based barriers to take out a statewide story-telling and dance competition.
e school and Rosebud College were joint winners of the ‘best story’ award at the Wakakirri secondary schools competition late last month.
Year 12 Hoppers Crossing student Kallie Dineen said her school’s performance, titled
Break the Divide, was based on its motto
‘Prosperity through diversity’.
“Our story was about equality through cultures, languages, gender and sexuality,” she said.
“It’s an issue that’s important to us.
“Fortheperformance, webuiltawallbetween two groups. A girl from one of the groups nds herself on the wrong side of the wall, and a er anguish and turmoil the groups decide to put their di erences aside and come together to form one tribe.”
e performance also won awards for ‘best show-stopping group dance’ and ‘best choreography’.
Kallie said the students spent six months rehearsing before competing in the heats at Frankston Performing Arts Centre in August.
e choreography was led by student Temanawanui Paraha, while the students also designed and made the sets and costumes.
“Taking part in this has made us realise we can achieve things,” Kallie said. “We have all really bonded and made the school proud.”

Children at two Wyndham kindergartens will have access to more, and better, computers a er the announcementoftwostategovernment grants.

Kindergartens across the state will receive up to $1500 each to improve their IT facilities. ey were also given the chance to apply for grants to upgrade their centres.
Goodstart Early Learning in Hoppers Crossing and Werribee will also receive money to install interactive touchscreens and upgrade bathrooms.
Western Metropolitan Liberal MP Andrew Elsbury said the grants would give children access to better services.
“ is is a good news story for local families and children who will bene t from these upgraded early-year services,” he said.
Children and Early Childhood Development Minister Wendy Lovell said the grants would help kinders continue to deliver world-class learning programs.

Pink lady silhouettes will adorn the walls of Point Cook’s Jamieson Way Community Centre this month as the centre turns pink to raise money for a breast cancer support group. The centre will also donate money from its community market on Sunday, October 5 to Breast Cancer Network Australia. The support group helps women battling breast cancer by providing them with information about the disease and its treatments. It also connects women with others battling the disease. Jamieson Way Community Centre’s Carlie Hoffman says the centre started the fundraiser a few years ago after a centre user was diagnosed with breast cancer. “We just wanted to raise awareness of breast cancer and the work the Breast Cancer Network does and raise as much money as possible for them,” she said. The market will be held from 9am to 2pm. Visit: www.jamiesonwaycc.org.au

“I really love Wyndham,” long-time resident and community-minded citizen Nik Tsardakis says. “Having worked in Tokyo and ailand, I can say there’s nothing like coming home.” By
What’s your connection to the local community?
I was born in Werribee, have lived in Hoppers Crossing and now call Werribee South home.
I’ve raised ve children in Wyndham and used to live on the land as my family had a farm – a market garden – in Werribee South.
I’ve been a member of Hoppers Crossing Rotary for 35 years and been director of Manor Court Werribee Aged Care since 2000, with a stint as chairman.
I was director of the old Werribee District HospitalandamnowchairmanoftheWerribee District Hospital Foundation, which stemmed from that. Any pro ts we make go to Werribee Mercy Hospital.
I’ve been president of the Ratepayers Association of Werribee South, a committee member of the Greenwich Management Plan and the Regional Rail Community Reference Group, as well as being involved with the East Werribee Employment Precinct.
e welcoming nature of the Wyndham community, including the local council, has given me many opportunities.
What do you like about Wyndham?
e open spaces, being close to the bay, the cultural diversity and tourist attractions, including the mansion grounds, agricultural precinct and the Western Treatment Plant because it has sanctuaries for ora and fauna.
What would you like to change?
e conditions of our road network and the tra c congestion.
More funding is required for the public health system and hospitals.
Rebecca Miller

In the employment precinct, I’d like to see Victoria University be a multi-uni facility with more students o ered courses from there and other universities to study engineering and applied science so those skills can be used to build infrastructure. e more people trained in those areas the more we can transform the
city’s capacity for new businesses and stay competitive in a global economy.
What’s your favourite eatery or place to get co ee?
I like Wyndham Cache, Jacksons on K, Shadowfax, Point Cook shopping centre and
Joseph’satthemansion.Alltheownersatthose places are very welcoming.
How do you spend your downtime?
I occasionally play golf at Sanctuary Lakes, where I’m a member. I spend time with my grandchildren and go overseas to visit family.

FB: Do you have a kitchen tip for us?
PR and LR: Clean up as you go.
Funny now I think of it, but my husband, Kevin, has a fair bit in common with Jeff Kennett. Not only can he do a great impersonation of our former Premier, he’s also obsessed with vanilla slices. YoumayrememberthattheAnnualGreatAustralian Vanilla Slice competition was the brainchild of Jeff Kennett. So passionate was he about the creamy custard treat, he created a contest to nd the best vanilla slice in the land (genius, really, seeing as he got to judge it himself!)
Well Kevin is equally as passionate (not to mention UNBELIEVABLY FUSSY about his vanilla slices. He prefers to call them “snot blocks”, and I can tell you he would walk through ames or crawl across broken glass to nd one that’s up to his very lofty standards.
The only trouble with vanilla slices is that they’re notoriously dif cult to make. You want feather-light, aky pastry and a custard that holds its shape without losing any of its creamy texture.
And after a couple of stress-inducing attempts, I think I’ve nailed it.
Pictured is my latest batch, the custard made from scratch, using Donna Hay’s vanilla slice recipe.
But I’ve also seen great results using a vanilla pudding mix, or lattice biscuits instead of puff pastry sheets. Has anyone tried either of these methods? Do you have your own fail-safe vanilla slice recipe? I’d love to hear about it.
If you’re struggling to nd the perfect gift for the home chef who has every gadget known to man, these “muf n top” cake moulds are sure to put a smile on their face.
Just ll the jean-style cupcake pants with your favourite batter and they’ll develop a nice little bulge around the middle!
Muf n Tops by Fred are widely available online and will set you back about $20 for a pack of four.

By Rebecca Miller
My rst job was waitressing at a local Chinese restaurant. I loved it because I got a free meal at the end of each shift, met lots of people and gained con dence. I was 15.
Getting your rst job isn’t always easy – I handed out several resumes before getting a call – especially for students who have no work experience. But there are plenty of jobs providing casual and part-time employment.
The retail and hospitality sectors are often popular with students because they have night and weekend shifts.
And with warmer weather on the way and Christmas not far away, these industries are getting busier, meaning they’re a great place to start looking.
So drop in to local restaurants, cafés, independent supermarkets and fashion stores, bakeries and fruiterers to suss out whether they’re looking for staff.
And if they are, pop back with a cover letter and a resume. Or, if working for a big company appeals, check out the careers section of their website.
A cover letter should introduce the applicant to the reader; respond to the job requirements; attract the reader’s attention; refer them to the resume and not include too many “I” statements.
Its aim is to prove the applicant’s personal qualities and characteristics are a good t for the position and show they will make a positive contribution to the business.
When writing a resume it should be no more than two pages. If no paid work has been completed, include voluntary work and jobs done for family and friends such as babysitting or dog walking. And add in any hobbies related to the job.
If this sounds like a lot of effort, think of all the money that could be earned and what could be bought with it!

While kids look forward to school holidays, the break can often be a stressful time for parents as they worry about entertaining them.
Wyndham residents are lucky as there’s lots to keep primary and secondary students amused during the break, and it will be easy on the wallet – especially for school-aged animal lovers who get free entry to Werribee Open Range Zoo during the holidays.
From now until December, kids can get along to a Meet The Keeper session, which provide opportunities to hear about our animals from the people who know them best – their keepers.
Hear the keepers talk about the creatures in their care and the conservation work being done for various species. Check the times they’ll be talking about your favourite animals and schedule them into your next visit.
Consider also slipping into some comfy shoes, slapping on a hat, grabbing a water bottle and joining the Heart Foundation Walking Group on Thursday, October
2, starting 10am from Arndell Park Community Centre. You’ll get to see some of the beautiful sights the region has to offer.
All ages are welcome at this family and wheelchair-friendly walking route. Best of all, these events are free, but be sure to book on 8734 8911.
Youngsters into singing and dancing won’t want to miss DQ4 On The Dance Floor, an interactive dancing and singing stage show incorporating cheerleading, ballet and hip-hop. The show runs Thursday, October 2, from 2pm at Wyndham Cultural Centre. Tickets cost $22.95. Details: www.wyncc. com.au
For teenagers, the Youth Resource Centre in Hoppers Crossing has them covered with a holiday program including a visit to DFO and movies at Crown and, on Friday, October 3, a sports grand nal day with many activities and fun games building team spirit scheduled.
With all this action in Wyndham, parents can rest assured their kids will sleep well –and so will they.

Name: Charlie
Breed: Guinea Pig

With Dr Kristi of Hoppers Crossing Vet Clinic and Hospital

Age: 2 years
Gender: Male
Colour: Brown
Charlie may be little, but he has a lot of love to give! He’d lould love to spend time sitting on your lap for pats and cuddles. He’s very curious and likes to explore and investigate.
Charlie is family-orientated and would prefer to live with a family and kids and, possibly, a friendly, female desexed piggy.
Name: Taffy
Breed: Domestic Short Hair
Age: 4 years
Gender: Female
Colour: Tabby
Taffy is a sweetie, just like her namesake. She’s a shy puss just waiting to blossom in the right home and would love to sit on the couch and watch TV with you.
Taffy is looking for an adult home with no other pets.
Dr Joe Covelli, raised in Altona North, made the brave decision to build the Hoppers Crossing Veterinary Clinic and Hospital in 1994, just three years into his veterinary career. He opened the doors on the purpose-built hospital as a sole vet with only a few nurses to help him. Twenty years later, the original nurses, Lyn, Andrea and Karen, are still part of this caring clinic. Along with the rest of the nursing team they have shared decades of dog and cat advice with the Wyndham community. The clinic expanded 18 years ago with Dr Kristi Green, a local from Hoppers Crossing, joining as the second full-time vet. Dr Kristi loved the clinic and animals so much she stayed in her rst veterinary job and became a partner to Dr Joe in 2006. Joe, Kristi and the veterinary team pride themselves on
listening to client needs and caring for client pets as they would their own. They provide a full range of medical and surgical services, including digital radiology and ultrasound. The clinic’s popular grooming parlour and Puppy Preschool have catered to hundreds of happy pets over the past 20 years. Medical specialists, orthopaedic surgeons and behaviour consultants visit the clinic to assist with complex cases. The clinic is also proud to help train the present batch of veterinary students studying at the University of Melbourne Vet School. Over the past two decades, the clinic has grown to a team of ve vets, 10 nurses, two groomers, a trainee nurse, two very spoilt clinic cats and a menagerie of much-loved staff pets. The clinic’s Open Day will be held from 10am-3pm on Sunday, October 12.

HOPPERS CROSSING 5 The Court, 3029
Harcourts Wyndham City: 9741 4000 Price: $269,000 – $289,000 Private sale
Whether for nesters or savvy investors, this unit makes a claim to great value. Both bedrooms have built-in wardrobes and there’s a walk-through bathroom with separate basin area and toilet. The large kitchen has plenty of cupboards – top and bottom – a gas cooker and breakfast bar. The L-shaped living room has stylish glass-fronted display cabinets, elegant window coverings and a ceiling fan. A wall heater, air-conditioner and window shutters keep things comfy year-round. A pergola at the back, along with extended brick paving, provides relaxation space and there’s a remote-controlled double garage. The property is within a short walk of Werribee Plaza shopping centre.

In what has to be the prettiest pocket in Wyndham, with what has to be the best outdoor entertainment space for miles around, this is a property that could attract enough admirers to cause a traf c jam.
The street in which the pared-back Georgian-style house sits is itself a drawcard as it winds past Lollypop Creek and its wonderful wetland areas, walking tracks and lea ness.
On about 1000 square metres, the house is beautifully presented and has more space for a family to spread out than should be legal. No less than four living areas include a dedicated theatre room with dual-level oor, ceiling bulkhead, dark roman blinds, cinema-style carpet and its own split-system (electric recliners, projector and screen are negotiable).
Other spacious living areas are a dining room (or rumpus), carpeted family and tiled
meals zones, and an upstairs sitting room – and there’s a study near the front door.
The kitchen has loads of bench space and cupboards, wide (plumbed) fridge recess, a step-in pantry and a wall oven, electric cooktop and dishwasher sporting the Miele label. Tucked behind here is the laundry and a powder room.
All bedrooms are upstairs, including the main with a sitting area looking out through the big fanlight window, a walk-in robe and en suite with a laundry chute. The main bathroom has a corner spa and dual vanity basins.
Now to the amazing north-facing outdoor room of about 150 square metres. Divided into three distinct sections under a pitched ceiling with exposed rafters and brush mat cladding, with rich burgundy polished stamped concrete underfoot, it has a tropical resort feel. And with the addition
of a fog machine, laser light and sound systems, potbelly stove and solar LED lights, it has a de nite party-pad vibe.
One section is all about the built-in barbecue and bar with stools; another is an enclosed eight-person spa room; and the third is a covered deck with lit feature panels.
Another sitting area under a large sail is next to a fenced, solar-heated salt swimming pool/cascade water feature rimmed by sealed aggregate and sandstone-edged gardens.
Whether a good thing or bad, the kids will not want to leave home with all this on tap.
All gardens are easy upkeep, there are side double gates to parking space for boat or caravan, and there’s a double garage.

I alwaystakenoticewhenoverseaswinemakers come over and talk up Australian wines. It’s fascinating to hear their views on who is doing well and what regions and wine styles they’re excited about.
When Michel Chapoutier (Rhône Valley and Victoria’s Pyrenees) talks, you listen; likewise Jacques Lurton (Bordeaux and Kangaroo Island). Napa Valley winemaker Chris Carpenter was recently spruiking Australian cabernet sauvignon.
Carpenter specialises in the Bordeaux varieties of cabernet sauvignon, merlot and cabernet franc and makes wine at a series of vineyards in the mountains of California’s Napa Valley.
Acoupleofyearsago,Carpenter’semployers, America’s Jackson Family Wines, bought McLaren Vale’s Clarendon vineyard. e name may not mean much to many of us but the vineyard has been a constant supplier to Penfolds and Hardy’s top wines for years. It could easily be considered one of Australia’s best vineyards.
e Jacksons installed a local winemaker –Charlie Seppelt – and Carpenter as consulting winemaker to oversee their new wines, labelled Hickinbotham a er the man who planted the vineyard in the 1970s. Carpenter is here to concentrate on cabernet sauvignon.
When he arrived, Carpenter says he knew little about Australian cabernet sauvignon and its regional styles so he set out to learn as much as he could about them. He was pretty excited by what he found.

After making wine in Tuscany and the Napa Valley, Chris Carpenter jumped at the chance to make wine in Australia.
“That vineyard, and the history of that vineyard and the brands it has contributed to, and its unique place in a nether region between McLaren Vale and the Adelaide Hills was something I wanted to explore and understand and see what I could do with the cabernet there.
“There’s really, really old vine cabernet in that vineyard that we don’t see in the Napa Valley because phylloxera just wiped us out 30 years ago. There’s 80-year-old vines that are gnarly and deep-rooted.
“There’s a unique part of that vineyard that shows the same characteristics as the mountains do in the Napa. It helps grape concentration in a unique way and that’s something I have great familiarity with.”

“A friend of mine collected Aussie wines in the ’90s when people collected Aussie wines. But the US got pounded with a lot of plonk, which is a shame, and the understanding of Australian wines faded in the States.
“It was so nice to understand that there’s incredible wines being made here in Australia.
“It was a great pleasure for me to come out and learn about cabernet in Australia. In my rst month here in Australia I probably tasted 100 Aussie cabs,” Carpenter says, adding that more interesting, better wines are now appearing on American shelves.
The amount of talent and incredible winegrowing areas is unsurpassed.
“One of the things I’ve learned throughout that process – or at least have tried to learn – is what is the understanding of cabernet in Australia.
“When I approached the cabernet at Hickinbotham a lot of that tasting was in my mind. That black olive note, the little
bit of a green note you get in cabernet in Australia. I wanted to maintain that, add a little Bordeaux and Napa into it and get some of those fruit characters it has to offer. That was my goal.”
Carpenter’s first Australian cabernet, the 2012 Hickinbotham Clarendon Vineyard Trueman Cabernet Sauvignon, was released last month.

Nicola Hancock has the one thing all great fast bowlers have in common ... an intimidation factor.
Withashinynewballinherhand, shehas the choice of ramping up her speed, aiming to knock the stumps out of the ground, or digging the ball in short and delivering her own brand of chin music.
“I think, in general, people are a bit intimidated by me,” Hancock says.
“I’m bigger than a normal girl, very broad built. I do like to dig the ball in.”
Hancockisatearawaybowlerandbig-hitting batsman from Williamstown who wants to make her mark on the Australian women’s cricket landscape.
She opens the bowling, bats in the middle order and seemingly has success wherever she goes.
e 18-year-old has represented Victoria at under-age level for the past four seasons.
SherecentlytravelledtotheCricketAustralia Centre of Excellence in Brisbane for an under-18 talent camp. Hancock said she was looking forward to displaying her skills in her rst taste of national duties.
“I want to get my name out there,” she said.
“I want to show them what I have and what I can bring to a team.
‘‘I’m a bowler and I have a bit of pace behind me. I’m faster than normal girls and, hopefully, that’s what they see as my talent.”
With the attention of national selectors sparked, Hancock is also set for a big year with Victoria a er receiving a Cricket Victoria ‘Vic Spirit’ contract.
She joins Australian World Cup hero and fellow western suburbs gun Jess Cameron in the 19-woman Vic Spirit squad whose coach Barry Neivandt is suitably impressed.
“Nicolaispossiblythequickestfemalebowler in Victoria,” he said.
“She hits a big ball in the mid-lower order andhasagreatarmintheout eld. She’sstrong, committed and passionate.”

Runaway Reds
Hoppers Crossing is through to the Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 4 nal after a runaway 4-1 win over Up eld at Arndell Park Reserve on Friday night. The Reds were lucky to have parity (1-1) at half-time, thanks to a spectacular save from goalkeeper Shaun Page just before the break. Up eld scored rst, but Khalil Assaad equalised with a glancing header from a set piece. The second half was all one-way traf c, with Reds winger Zia Sherzai a constant threat on the left side. He was rewarded for his hard work to put Hoppers 2-1 ahead and

Hancock had three in her kit a er representing Victoria in hockey and athletics.
“Hockey season has always been in the winter so that worked out well with me for tness,” she said.
“With athletics and cricket, it was always very hard. I’d go from athletics in the morning and then hop o to cricket.
“Eventually I made the decision in under-16s that I’d focus on cricket. I had to give up athletics and it’s turned out pretty well.”
For her outstanding sporting achievements, Hancock is a monthly nominee for the Don Deeble Rising Star award, run by Sunshine Western Region Sports Club in conjunction with StarWeekly.
She will receive $1000 donated by the YarravilleClubCricketClubandotherprizesto help reach her sporting goals. e Don Deeble Rising Star award recognises young athletes in the western suburbs who have achieved outstanding results at state and national level.

■ It’s best and fairest season. Werribee crowned Jarred Moore as back-to-back winner of the Bruce Montgomery Trophy at Moonee Valley Racing Club last Thursday, and Williamstown will present the Gerry Callahan Medal at Williamstown Town Hall on Friday. At Western Jets, rst-year player Brayden Monk, a Werribee Districts junior, took out the Barry Round Medal, and it was no surprise to see Wayde Skipper win the Hoppers Crossing B&F. He’ll also be a leading contender for the Barry Priest Medal at the WRFL presentations this Friday. And there’s a new award in the WRFL this year, the Ron & Thelma Angwin Medal for best and fairest in division 3. It’s a most deserving honour for Ron (deceased) and Thelma, who were both awarded life membership of the league because of their tireless work for the competition. I’m so pleased to see Thelma recognised for her contribution.
■ Looks is if Caroline Springs footy club will have to wait another year to sign up two-time Hawthorn premiership player Brian Lake to the Lakers’ playing or coaching ranks. Brian’s a great supporter of the club on and off the eld, but he’s keen to try for a third AFL premiership in 2015. What a move going from the Bulldogs to the Hawks turned out to be for him personally ... two premiership medals and a Norm Smith. One former AFL player has already moved on, with Deer Park’s Brent Guerra signing as player-coach of Chelsea in the Southern footy league.
■ With just one function to go on my footy calendar for this season – the WRFL presentation night this Friday – it’s interesting to look back on the highlights. Footscray winning the VFL premiership heads the list and, even though I work for Werribee, I love to see the Doggies win anything. I am, after all, a life member. The joy that win brought to long-time Doggies supporters was wonderful to see.
in the nal at Jubilee Park, Ringwood at 6pm on Saturday.
As you were at the Devils Werribee Devils have opted for stability, retaining all their coaches for the next Big V basketball season. The Devils solidi ed their place in the men’s championship under Mark Hughes, who will return to the club. Lloyd Klaman took the women’s division 1 side to the nals in a promotion year and was rewarded with a contract extension. The youth league teams will be coached by Trevor Burnette (men) and Paul Jones (women).
Cricket returns Werribee will open the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association north-west season on home soil in a two-day game against Kew at Chirnside Park starting on Saturday. The Tigers are eager to atone for last summer’s disappointing nals campaign, when they fell short of expectations. They advanced through the qualifying nal stage with a draw against Altona before succumbing to Noble Park in the semi- nal. The Tigers will again be led by captain Shaun
Dean and vice-captain Tim O’Brien. In the VTCA, Hoppers Crossing is the highest-ranked Wyndham club, playing in the top ight senior division. The Cats will start their new campaign on the road at St Bernard’s Old Collegians in a two-day game starting on Saturday. In west A1, there will be a mouth-watering local derby rst up, with Wyndhamvale to host Werribee Centrals. Point Cook will make the trip to Williamstown CYMS. In west B1, Seabrook entertains Williamstown Imperials in their rst dig of the summer. In the WDCA, Bellbridge will face Melton Centrals at home in round one.
Back-to-back Tiger Tough-as-nails onballer Jarred Moore, formerly of the Sydney Swans, has won back-to-back Bruce Montgomery Trophies at Werribee Football Club. The captain won the senior B&F with 37 votes from Jye Bolton (32), Michael Sodamaco (29), Tom Gribble (26) Tim McGenniss (26), Scott McMahon (22) and Scott Sherlock (20). The development league best and fairest went to Billy Iles, who tallied 29 votes, from Meyrick Buchanan (26), Jobi Harper (24) and Jason Robinson (23).
Lance Jenkinson
■ It was also great to see Parkside get the monkey off its back and win a grand nal after so many attempts in recent years. And Werribee Districts’ debut as a senior team in the WRFL went better than I expected; they’ll be a force for years to come. The lowlights for me were the power of money at all levels of football to dictate results and the crumbling nature of football participation of kids from 16-18. The standard is still pretty good, but the interest is waning and that’s a big concern. I don’t have a de nitive answer for either problem.

Brayden Monk has enjoyed an excellent 12 months.
A er missing out on the Western Jets squad in2013,theteenagerreturnedwithavengeance this year, ghting his way into the TAC Cup club’s top echelon of players.
e reward for his hard work came last week when the teenager claimed the Western Jets’ best and fairest award.
Monk won the Barry Round Medal with 214 votes from teammates Liam Duggan and Billy Myers, who nished second and third with 187 votes and 167 respectively.
e 18-year-old was a picture of consistency throughout the season, named among the Jets’ best players in 12 of his 17 matches, including the club’s elimination nal loss to Dandenong.
Western Jets region manager Shane Sexton was full of praise for Monk.
“I can remember watching him run around in an under-16 Western Region Football League nal…hewasagoodlittleplayeratthe time,” Sexton said. “You just sort of wondered if he would be able to make it at his size
“He really didn’t get much of a look in last year, and in fact he wasn’t on the list at all. He wasinourMajakDawmulticulturalsquadand played some super footy.
“A er he had showed that dedication, that perseverance, that desperation to succeed, we gave him a look in.
“All of those characteristics have shown through again this year and he’s been an outstanding player.”
For Duggan, second-placing in the Barry Roundmedalcapso anoutstanding nalyear of junior football.
e Melton resident was a member of the AFL AIS Academy, played in the under-18 national championships, and played and was integral to the Jets reaching the nals.
“His [Duggan’s] second-place nish is a terri c re ection of the season he has had,” Sexton said.
While the TAC Cup season might be over, there is no slowing down for the Jets’ top-line players, who have turned their attention to the AFL dra .

Western Jets region manager Shane Sexton says the success of Adam Kennedy should be a lesson for all the region’s footballers.
Kennedy notched up his 50th game for Greater Western Sydney this season.
But it hasn’t always been smooth sailingforthedefender, whowasinitially overlooked by AFL club recruiters.
e then Melton resident wasn’t rookie-listed a er his top-age TAC Cup season and returned to the club as an over-age player.
Twelve months later, he made his debut for the Giants.
Kennedy was on hand at the Jets’ best and fairest function last week.
“We interviewed Adam on the night and talked to him about his career,” Sexton said.
“He didn’t play at the Western Jets in the under 15s or 16s.
“As a 17-year-old, he started to show his athleticism and running capacity.
“Asan18-year-old,hehadasolidyear. Some clubs were talking about making him a rookie-listed player. at didn’t eventuate.
“He came back as a 19-year-old and had an outstanding year, got himself dra ed and three years later he has played in excess of 50 games of AFL football.
“ ere is a lesson there – that if you believe you’re good enough and you want to play the game, persevere and be the best that you can be.”

During the school run one morning my daughtercommentedhowIwasquitecalmand not expressing my usual frustration at fellow motorists who do remarkably foolish things at that time of day.
I thought it was because no one had done anything to displease me – but that just isn’t possible–soitwasprobablyduetothecalming in uence projected by the Kia Optima.
e Optima isn’t the rst car that comes to mind when you think of the medium car market, but it certainly deserves a second look.
Like most of the Kia stable, it’s a lovely car to look at and has plenty of extras for the price. e range includes the base model Si(startingat$34,769),theSliandthetopofthe range Platinum.
ePlatinummodelIdrovehadalonglistof features that you’d nd in cars well beyond its mid-40s price tag. ese included the opening panoramic roof, leather trim seats (the front are heated and have two position memory settings),blindspotdetection, plentyofstorage and a host of safety features.
e entertainment system is controlled through a 7-inch touch screen with the usual bluetooth and USB connectivity and satellite navigation and rear view camera. e sound you get through the six-speaker Premium sound system, with external amp and sub woofer, is exceptional.
Along with all the bells and whistles, it has an attractive interior and comfortable, sports car-like driving position that just makes you feel good to be at the wheel.

e148kw2.4-litreengine(morepowerthan its Mazda 6 and Toyota Camry rivals) pushes the Optima along quite well. Like most larger 4-cylinder cars, it’s a bit sluggish at the low end, but it has quite a bit of grunt when you put the foot down, with pretty modest fuel consumption. It’s ni y around bends, too, and feels sporty when using the paddle shi ers. It’s nice and roomy and will easily accommodate three adults in the back, though
headroomcanbeanissueforanyoneonthetall side. e boot space is cavernous and there’s heapsofstorageinthecabin, includingcupand bottle holders, sunglass holder and a cooling glovebox.
e Optima stacks up well against its medium car rivals and others considered to be a class above.
