Pt Cook retail revamp
By Laura Michell
Shoppers at Point Cook Town Centre will have more stores to explore, with the centre soon to receive a $20 million revamp.
e redevelopment will add specialty stores â and Point Cookâs rst Woolworths supermarket â to the centre.
Developer Stockland, which owns the centre, says the redevelopment will begin next February and be nished by mid-year.
e 25,000-square-metre centre opened in late 2007, with construction costing $100 million.
e redevelopment will focus on the centreâs south-west corner, along Dunnings Road and Boardwalk Boulevard, which is now occupied by Harris Scarfe and Best & Less.
e work will not increase the centreâs oor space, with Woolworths to be built where Harris Scarfe and Best & Less are located.
Both stores will cease trading on January 12 next year to allow the redevelopment to begin. Itâs expected it will create about 100 jobs.
Stockland commercial property design and development manager Jane Lloyd said the redevelopment would cement the centreâs position as Point Cookâs premier shopping destination.
âPoint Cook Town Centre is in one of Melbourneâs fastest-growing population corridors, so we are pleased to undertake this development and deliver a centre that will serve the needs of this growing community,â she said.
âWe know the importance of a strong fresh food o ering and
are pleased to include a new Woolworths for our customers at Point Cook.
â e redeveloped centre will further enhance the current retail mix, which includes Coles, Target, Aldi and Dan Murphyâs, as well as 199 specialty stores.â
Centre manager Frank Pizi said the redevelopment would cause little to no disruption to shoppers.
âWe are very excited about this redevelopment and the opportunities ahead,â he said.
ââ
We know the importance of a strong fresh food offering ââ
- Jane Lloydi
âWe are continuing to work with council, the local community and our other partners to build a great retail o ering that meets the needs of residents, now and into the future.â
Point Cook Town Centre is the second shopping centre in Wyndham to receive a major redevelopment, with work starting on a $370 million expansion to Werribee Plaza earlier this year.
e Derrimut Road shopping centre upgrade is expected to be nished in late 2016 and will be renamed Paci c Werribee.
Its redevelopment is expected to create 750 construction jobs and 1200 permanent jobs when nished.

âFewer reys, slower responsesâ

A Wyndham re ghter believes Point Cookâs re service is being âcompromisedâ with the station having been forced to rely solely on volunteers three times in the past ve weeks.
Point Cook CFA station was closed between 6pm and 8am last Wednesday/ ursday because there was no station o cer available.
Sta called 30 CFA stations stretching from Warrnambool to Mildura but were unable to nd a replacement, meaning the station was placed on volunteer response.
e station was also placed on volunteer responseonAugust8andSeptember2because of a sta shortage.
e CFA maintains that the sta shortages did not mean the station was closed, saying volunteers turned out to incidents and emergencies as they always have.
But the re ghter, who asked not to be named, saidrelyingonvolunteerstorespondto incidents was compromising the service being provided in Point Cook.
e re ghter said volunteers worked hard but were not always able to respond to res.

âWe need more cover. At the moment, people are doing extra shi s and longer shi s,â he said.

e United Fire ghters Union has backed the Wyndham re ghterâs call for more sta , saying more re ghters were needed to service Victoriaâs growing population.
A CFA spokesman said Point Cookâs re service was not being compromised, with a minimum of two brigades, including MFB brigades, turning out to almost all incidents.
âWhere necessary, the re services support each other with trucks and sta , sharing resourcesoneithersideofthemetropolitan re service boundary,â the spokesman said.
Enrolment link to councillors
Wyndham residents will be represented by 12 councillors, increasing to 15 as the cityâs population grows, if a recommendation made by a state government- appointed panel is adopted.
e local government election review panel was set up a er the 2012 council elections.
Earlier this month, the panel released its review, making 55 recommendations on how the system could be changed.
One of its recommendations was that councillor numbers should be determined by the number of voters in each municipality, with voters being represented by either six, nine, 12 or 15 councillors.
Itsaidthemunicipalitieswithbetween 40,001 and 130,000 voters should be represented by 12 councillors, while those with more than 130,000 voters should have 15-member councils.
At the last election, Wyndham had more than 114,000 registered voters, meaning the number of councillors elected would increase from 11 to 12 at the next election if the recommendation is adopted.
e panel suggested changes be made to the countback process that is used to elect a new councillor if another councillor resigns. Currently, the votes of the resigning councillor are recounted and distributed among the other candidates according to preferences.
e panel recommended that all votes cast in the ward where the vacancy exists should be recounted.

âFeral pupilâ victim wins $1.2m
By Laura Michell
ASupremeCourtjudgehasawardedmorethan $1.27 million in damages to a former Werribee Secondary College teacher who su ered a nervous breakdown a er being forced to teach unruly students.
Peter Doulis, 48, sued the state government, saying he was allocated an unduly heavy workload of âferalâ classes at the college between 1998 and 2004.
e Supreme Court heard that in 2000, the
college divided its years 8, 9 and 10 classes into ve streams â accelerated, high achievers, medium achievers, low achievers and foundation.
Mr Doulis, who now su ers chronic severe depression, argued his classes were made up almost exclusively of the schoolâs most challenging students, including those who su ered from disabilities such as autism, dyslexia and Aspergerâs syndrome, and others who were very badly behaved.

Wild about conservation
More than 100 pupils across Wyndham have joined forces at Werribee Open Range Zoo to share ideas to help wildlife conservation.
e eastern barred bandicoot, now considered to be extinct in the wild, was the focus of last weekâs program.
Eleven schools took part in Love Your Locals Day, now in its third year.
In preparing their campaigns about sustainability and conservation of the bandicoot, pupils took part in online sessions where they met keepers, took a virtual tour of the zooâs breeding facility and interacted with each other.
ey then gathered at the zoo to unveil their campaigns, exchange ideas on raising awareness of threatened species, attend sustainability workshops and explore the zooâs grassland ecosystem.
Love Your Locals is part of the Western Region Schools Sustainability Festival.
Zoo education o cer Genevieve Johnson
said children were critical in the ght to save native endangered animals.
âWhentheyâregivenanopportunity,someof theideastheycomeupwithareextraordinary,â she said.
âAs well as saving wildlife, they had visions for a greener Wyndham with cleaner air, solar energy, more recycling and better public transport. ey designed posters, wrote stories and poetry and even acted out plays â we were blown away by their creativity.â
Ms Johnson said the zoo would use a mix of zoo resources and online tools to create a â ghting extinction hubâ to connect schools with each other and conservation groups.
â e eastern barred bandicoot once existed in Wyndham, but it doesnât any more,â she said. âWe talked to students about the threats to our native wildlife and what they can do. Now we want them to spread the message.â
Mr Doulisâs students were âvirtually crawling up the walls outside the classroomâ.
Earlier this month, Supreme Court Justice Timothy Ginnane ruled the school had breached its duty of care because it did not reduce the number of di cult classes Mr Doulis had to teach.
On Tuesday, Justice Ginnane made formal orders con rming Mr Doulisâs compensation payout, ordering that the Victorian Education Department pay him a total of $1,279,751. e payout will include $300,000 in general
damages, $337,090 for past loss of earnings, $550,000 for future economic loss, and $70,000 in interest on past loss of wages.
Solicitor Michael Magazanik, from Slater & Gordon, said Mr Doulis was focused on regaining his health.
âPeter was severely damaged by his experience at Werribee Secondary College and thereâs no quick xes here,â Mr Magazanik said. â is win doesnât immediately repair his mental health.â

Noise works for top horses
Wyndham council will build a wall between the quarantine centre at Werribee Racecourse and the Werribee Sports and Fitness Centre to minimise noise stress on foreign horses here for this yearâs spring carnival arising from the centreâs redevelopment works. e rst batch of horses from Japan is due to arrive in Werribee on Saturday, with a further 19 European runners to enter the Vintage Crop stables, adjoining the construction site on Ballan Road, on September 27.
Wyndham acting chief executive Nerina Di Lorenzo said the city had worked closely with Racing Victoria to reach a compromise.
â e costs and time delays that would result from the Werribee Sports and Fitness Centre site being fully shut down for the period [were] not practical,â she said.
âWhile the operations on the site meet construction guidelines, a sound barrier will be created by placing a row of shipping containers on the boundary of the work site, with any costs to be shared equally between Wyndham City and Racing Victoria.â

Kevin Hillier tells why Super September is his favourite month
Itâs an election year so I urge you to Vote 1 September, for the best month of the year.
As kids we loved it for the school holidays, the Royal Melbourne Show and footy nals.
As adults, we still love all those. Now I can throw in the Spring Racing Carnival, which started at Flemington last weekend. e run of weather weâve had since the start of the month also brings a smile to the faces of most.
You can see it in little things like when youâre shopping ... sta seem happier and instead of complaining about the weather theyâre positive: âLovely day, isnât it?â You see more people walking and you feel more like being outside, not stuck indoors.
I love the Royal Melbourne Show, it takes me back to my childhood, with the showbags, the rides, the carny attractions and even the food.
Memories of the dodgem cars, dagwood dogs, balls in the clownâs mouth and â my personal favourite as a kid â the racing
monkeys (complete with Bert Bryant-type commentary from the attendant who always sounded like heâd just smoked 30 cigarettes) are triggered every time I walk into Sideshow Alley. I was a showbag pig as a kid, spending all my pocket money on bags of stu I didnât really want but felt I had to have. I canât wait to experience it again in the next few weeks through the eyes of my nine-year-old son.
The footy nals bring an excitement that canât be measured by crowd gures and television ratings. Letâs be honest, you must be from another planet if you donât know whoâs playing at this time of the season. Everyone has an opinion on whoâll win and I nd it hard to believe that anyone wouldnât want to be part of the exciting events that happen in September.
e naysayers will bring up hayfever, lawn mowing and spring cleaning, but, for me, September has my vote as the best month of

Church at a crossroads
By Cameron Tait
Facing a repair bill of more than $620,000, Werribeeâs 130-year-old Crossroads Uniting Church may nd some divine intervention handy if itâs to return to its former glory.
Originally known as St omas the Apostle, the bluestone church and an adjoining manse were built and funded by Werribee pioneer omas Chirnside at a cost of ÂĢ3500 and opened as a Presbyterian church in 1884.
But the heritage-listed church, at the corner of Duncans Road and Synnot Street, requires urgent attention, with its sandstone detailing starting to crumble.
Paul Cochran, chairman of the churchâs council, said the condition of the sandstone had signi cantly deteriorated since it was last repaired in 1974.
âAn initial inspection found 17 blocks needed replacing at a cost of $46,000,â he said. âWe were told some of the original slate was becoming porous and had caused water damage inside the church, which was going to cost a further $120,000.â
A subsequent inspection revealed the true extent of the problem, with 90 new sandstone blocks needed at a cost of more than $500,000.
Adding to the cost, the original sandstone was sourced from Barabool Quarries, near Geelong, which is now closed â so the church has had to source new sandstone from Germany.
Mr Cochran said while the Uniting Church wasresponsibleforthebuilding, hewashoping the congregation and wider community could assist.
e church will hold its annual fete on October 18 between 9am and 2pm.

Cheap housing comes at price
Public transport and community services shortages are driving up the cost of living in Wyndham, making the city an una ordable place for many families to live, a Senate inquiry into housing a ordability has heard.
Wyndham council last week told a hearing into housing a ordability that while the city had a high percentage of less expensive housing, many residents were experiencing nancial stress.
e councilâs submission said high eviction rates showed much of Wyndhamâs âa ordable housingâ was evidently una ordable.
In 2012-13, the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal received almost 3000 requests for warrants of possession for houses in Wyndham, more than any other municipality in Melbourne.
e council said this was because people living in Wyndham were experiencing above average living costs.
â e lower cost of housing comes at the expense of a lack of basic living needs in a local area, including health services, education, a ordable transport, healthy food and employment,ââ the councilâs submission said. ââFamilies are forced into car dependency and are vulnerable to rising costs of petrol. ere is clear evidence that community and social infrastructure are not keeping pace with the needs arising from the strong rate of growth and development.â e inquiry will release its ndings in late November.

Seasonâs rst snakes slither by
By Cameron Tait
Summer may still be a few months away, but snakes are already slithering out from their hiding places across Wyndham.
Snake catcher Adam Sapiano, of Victorian Reptiles in Hoppers Crossing, said he had been busy since the nal weeks of winter, with Point Cook among the hotspots.
âIâve been called out to catch six or seven snakes so far this season, mainly in PointCookandtheyâveallbeentigersnakes,â
Mr Sapiano said. âMost of my time is spent in newer housing estates in Point
Cook or in Wyndham Vale and the Manor Lakes area.
âWith houses being built further and further out and on former swamps and wetlands, itâs no surprise people will come across snakes.â
Mr Sapiano advised residents to keep yards neat and tidy and to remove rubbish, eliminating places where snakes can hide.
âOne of the biggest problems we face as snake catchers is when people call us, they donât watch where the snake goes,â he said.

ree rst division-winning tickets have been sold already this year at Target Lotto on Old Geelong Road in Hoppers Crossing, netting more than $1.2 million in prizes.
Two winning tickets, totalling $1.5 million, have been sold in Werribee.
South Preston has been Victoriaâs luckiest suburb so far this year.
While only two rst division winners were sold in the Preston area between January and June, it has netted more than $2.8 million in division one prizes.
Target Lottoâs most recent rst division win
came last Wednesday. A syndicate of 10 won about$2million,earningthemabout$200,000 each.
It was the storeâs 28th rst division win.
Owner Carlo Addamo said most of the storeâs rst division winners were members of syndicates.
âWeâve been so lucky with our syndicates,â he said.

Point Cookâs Animal Accident and Emergency Centre has already treated an animal for a snake bite and warned pet owners to remain on the lookout for snakes and avoid walking dogs in long grass.
Dr Karen Davies, of Point Cookâs Direct
Vet Services, urged people to act quickly if they suspect a snake bite.
âOne of my dogs was bitten by a snake and died within eight minutes,â she said.
Common signs of snake bite include sudden vomiting, salivating, laboured breathing, di culty walking, urinating blood, and collapsing.
e Department of Environment and Primary Industries recommends people be vigilant when walking near all waterways and parks. Anyone who sees a snake should remain calm, move themselves and any pets well clear, and call a licensed catcher.

Clear-cut choice on traf c woes
By Benjamin Millar and Cameron Tait
When it comes to tra c congestion, Wyndham voters face a clear choice at Novemberâs state election â the Coalitionâs East West Link or Laborâs plan to divert trucks from the West Gate Bridge and remove Victoriaâs 50 most dangerous level crossings, including at Cherry and Werribee streets.
ââ This is a purely political decision ââ -AndrewElsbury
A er earlier declaring it would honour any East West Link contract signed before the November 27 election, Opposition Leader Daniel Andrews says the party has changed its position in light of fresh legal advice.
e reversal comes ahead of a court challenge to the East West Link to be heard in December, a er the election.
Laborâs decision turns the election into a referendum on the controversial road project, the second stage of which would provide an additional major east-west river crossing.
â is election is a choice â Laborâs plan for better public transport and local roads or Denis Napthineâs $8 billion dud tunnel,â Mr Andrews said.
Laborâs bombshell came as Premier Denis Napthine visited Sunshine last week to
examine geo-technical drilling under way for the western section of the project, an $8-10 billion connection between CityLink and the Western Ring Road.
Western Metropolitan Region Liberal MP Andrew Elsbury accused western suburbs Labor MPs of reversing their earlier support for this western stage of the project.
Mr Elsbury said the west urgently needed a new cross-city link to take the pressure o the West Gate Bridge, and Labor was running a âscare campaignâ despite having backed the project when it was in government.
â is is a purely political decision,â he said.
â e members of western suburbs Labor less than 18 months ago were collecting signatures on a petition for the western section to be built.â
But Tarneit MP Tim Pallas said Labor had never supported both sections of the East West Link.
Laborâs alternative proposal, the Western Distributor, involves new truck-speci c ramps onto and o the West Gate Freeway.
Labor has vowed to begin work on the ramps within a rst term in government.
Mr Andrews said Labor would use the savings from scrapping the East West Link on the Melbourne Metro rail project and on removing level crossings.
Mr Pallas said the Western Distributor would remove 5000 trucks from the bridge and come at a twentieth of the cost, allowing for greater investment in public transport and outer suburban arterial roads.

beautiful self contained apartments. Enjoy living amongst peers in a safe and enriching environment, comfortable in the knowledge that onsite care is 24 hours a day if it is needed.

Dear Karen, I found the perfect solution for mum and dad. Itâs called supportive living and is unique in Victoria. It gives the option that allows people to choose their own care in a place and at a time thatâs both convenient and affordable. Even meals are cooked fresh on site.

They remain in charge, they retain their independence but have the support on hand when they need it.
Why donât you call them and see if we can make an appointment to see them.
Their number is 1300 665 720.
I reckon it is the solution for them and us. A great peace of mind. Love Your Brother

Housing boost for Tarneit
Laura Michell
Wyndhamâs northern fringe will be expanded, with more than 800 houses to be built in a new Tarneit estate.
e 65-hectare Habitat on Davis Creek development, on the corner of Sayers and Davis roads, will include 820 houses.
More than 150 lots will front Davis Creek, which passes through the centre of the site.
e estate is being built by Satterley Property Group, which is also developing the New York-themed Upper Point Cook.
Satterley state general manager Jack Ho man said Habitat on Davis Creek would bring more a ordable housing to Tarneit, attracting young couples and families to the area. He said house and land packages, starting at less than $300,000 and reaching about $450,000, would go on sale next month.
According to the latest gures from the valuer-generalâs o ce, Tarneitâs average house price in March this year was $387,500, up from $355,000 in March 2013.
e gures revealed that Tarneit is Wyndhamâs third-most-expensive suburb to buy a house.
enewdevelopmentispartoftheRiverdale precinct structure plan, which was approved by the Metropolitan Planning Authority in June last year.
e plan includes a proposed town centre and schools to be serviced by the Tarneit Regional Rail Link station, which is scheduled to open next year.

âWith Tarneitâs population expected to grow by more than 25,000 residents by 2013, there is a strong need for quality residential communities in the area,â Mr Ho man said.
âWith so many lots facing Davis Creek, our objective has been to design a community that capitalises on the areaâs natural surrounds.
ââResidents will be able to enjoy walking trails, wetlands and expansive open spaces.ââ

Itâs time to get physical. Olivia Newton-John is calling on residents across the west to throw on the lycra and join her in a Wellness Walk on Sunday, September 28.
e walk through the streets of Ivanhoe, nishing with a street party and concert, will raise money for the wellness and supportive care programs provided at the Olivia Newton-John Cancer and Wellness Centre at the Austin Hospital.
e centre is dedicated to providing the very best in medical care, treatment and research to help stop cancer destroying the lives of so many people. Itâs a disease Ms Newton-John is all too familiar with. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1992; that same weekend, her father died from liver cancer. Her sister died last year from brain cancer.
âItâs touched my whole life in many ways,â Ms Newton-John said. âWhen I went through cancer I was able to participate in wellness programs such as yoga and meditation, and I did herbs and massage â all the things Iâve been able to implement in the wellness centre.â
Ms Newton-John said it had been amazing to see the centre come to fruition. She now has big plans for a new Olivia Newton-John Cancer Research Institute at the Austin.
âI believe that weâre going to be the team that sees an end to cancer. atâs my dream and we have some wonderful young researchers there with some wonderful ideas.â
e Wellness Walk caps o a big month for Ms Newton-John, who hosted the ONJ Gala at Flemington Racecourse and will sing the national anthem at this yearâs AFL grand nal. Go to http://fundraisingoliviaappeal.com/ event/thewellnesswalk to register for the Wellness Walk.

MY WYNDHAM
Anyone whoâs tried to turn their life around knows how hard it is, but Wyndham resident and senior pastor Justin Gardner has done just that, writes Rebecca Miller
Whatâs your connection to the local community?
Iâm the senior pastor at Destiny Centre Christian church in Hoppers Crossing. I have lived in Wyndham for 18 years and now live in Point Cook with my wife and two sons. I moved here from Sunshine to start a new life.
I was homeless at the age of 14 and involved with some of the people portrayed in the Underbelly series doing and selling drugs.
At 22, I found myself going to murder someone and was extremely suicidal âĶ thatâs when I asked Christ into my life.
I wasnât in church when I did it â it was just personal between me and the one who raised me.
My rst job was stirring co ees at Destiny Centre, where I later became youth pastor. e church cafe now sells co ees and so on for whatever price people want to pay. Any pro t made goes to paying for operations for blind children or medication to prevent blindness.

At Destiny Centre, we have been pioneering childrenâs homes in Kenya over the past ve years and have just nished building a school. Ourvisionfornextyearisto toutourchurch to help local people with addictions through the Destiny Transformations program, which

will involve professionals coming to the church to help those in need. is year, we started PJ Sunday. I wore a onesie to the Sunday service and many members also wore PJs to help raise awareness of children with cancer.
My job is to bring inspiration and comfort to people wherever they are at in life.

What do you like about your neighbourhood?

The Victorian Government is investing in a world-class health system with high quality, modern hospitals and a highly skilled workforce.
The $34.7 million Werribee Mercy Hospital upgrade will increase mental health services in Melbourneâs west.
This new 54 bed acute mental health facility will provide 25 additional beds and replace 29 existing acute mental health beds.
This expansion will improve local access to mental health services and is one of many mental health projects being delivered across Victoria.
This is part of $4.5 billion of health infrastructure currently underway, delivering modern, high-quality health services for Victorians.
The Victorian Government has also invested $238.3 million over four years to employ an extra 1,000 doctors, nurses, midwives and allied health professionals and to train 35,000 health students each year. Good News Lutheran College is a Christ-centred learning environment in which teachers, students and families are nurtured to grow in their gifts and abilities.
Currently the College is Prep to Year 10. Our vision is to establish a strong, Christ-centred Prep to Year 12 education by 2016. Already on site, we have specialist rooms such as Food Technology and an indoor Gymnasium, together with newly built facilities for Science, Art, Design and Manual Construction (including Woodwork and Metalwork).
Good News invites you to become a part of this family community and to visit the College. Tours of the College are currently being conducted at 10.00am each Friday. For further information, a prospectus or enrolment pack, please contact the College.

On Monday 1 September, students at Good News Lutheran College took time out to plant a tree celebrating 175 years of Lutheran schools in Australia. A national event, the College joined with 85 other Lutheran schools and 59 Early Learning Centres in planting a tree signifying our desire to remember, to celebrate and to give thanks for the blessings that have been part of Lutheran Education in this time.
Lutheran heritage has always held education in high regard. Back in 1839 when the ïŽrst school began operating on the banks of the River Torrens in South Australia, well before the advent of public schooling in Australia, the desire was to give students an education that was high quality and deeply founded in the core values and beliefs of the church. The continuing
growth of Good News demonstrates that the desire to provide a âChrist-centred, quality education for allâ is still very much the desire of many families today.
A selected group of students ranging from the College Captains through to representatives from Prep and Year 1 classes took part in the ceremony, also attended by a number of staff, Pastor Mark Winter from the St Philipâs Lutheran Congregation and College Council member John Belani who has been a member of the College Council since its inception in 1996. During this time, the College has grown from 24 students back when it ïŽrst opened its doors in 1997, through to an expected student population of 750 in 2016, the year the ïŽrst class of Year 12s will be graduated from the College.

ITâS A MUGâS GAME
Whether it be a single giant choc-chip cookie or a microwaved mug cake, dessert recipes designed for one person are always well received when I share them in this column. Maybe itâs because sometimes â late at night in front of the tv â we just want a sweet treat to savour without polishing off an entire package. For those who love citrus-based desserts, this mug cake is a fresh alternative to the traditional chocolate variety. The recipe is by Sneh Roy, creator of the award-winning Aussie blog Cook Republic. www.cookrepublic.com
ONE MINUTE COCONUT MUG CAKE
One third of a cup self-raising our 2 tablespoons desiccated coconut
1 tablespoon raw sugar
ž cup coconut milk
1 tablespoon light olive oil
1 egg
2 tablespoons lemon curd
Place our, coconut and sugar into a 375ml mug and mix well. Add the coconut milk, olive oil and egg. Mix well with a spoon until combined. Gently stir through lemon curd. Donât mix it in completely. Microwave on high for 50 to 60 seconds or until it puffs and rises to the top, watching to make sure it doesnât spill over. Serve immediately with extra lemon curd and cream.

EDIBLE ART
When youâve got a child who is a fussy eater, it helps to make their food look interesting.

WERRIBEE 19 Westminster Drive, 3030
YPA Real Estate: 9741 7777 Price: $285,000 â $295,000 Private sale
On about 630 square metres with a huge 21-metre frontage, this well-located house has options aplenty for a rst-home buyer or smart investor. Three bedrooms each have built-in wardrobes and share a bathroom. The kitchen has a freestanding gas cooker under a rangehood, timber-trimmed cabinetry, a louvre-doored pantry and timber blinds. Itâs next to a carpeted dining-living area with wall gas heater and a split-system, and thereâs also evaporative cooling. The large backyard has lots of lawn dotted with shrubs, and the back verandah is the spot to sit and relax. This is a great starter property with plenty of scope to add personal touches.

A classic brick veneer of its era, this is a house that bene ts from updates, especially with the inclusion of bulkheads in most rooms, downlights and clever placement of wall recesses that streamline interiors and provide a contemporary edge. Itâs beautifully set up for a family, especially one who enjoys entertaining and appreciates lovely gardens.
Beyond a brick-paved driveway which, along with the double garage, provides heaps of parking space, the front door opens to a small foyer with oating oorboards underfoot and a recessed feature wall. To the left is a lounge-dining room ( oorboards) with a bank of roman blind-clad windows capturing views of
gardens and the outdoor entertainment spot; two recessed feature walls, one for a television, add architectural interest.
A sliding door then opens to the large kitchen/family-meals hub with lots of windows dressed in roller blinds. Timber-trimmed cabinetry, a wall oven, integrated microwave, dishwasher, a 900mm gas cooktop and a wide fridge space are kitchen keynotes.
Double doors from the lounge room open to the main bedroom which has two sets of mirrored robes and an en suite with a big shower. Three more bedrooms with robes are down a boarded hallway from the living hub, as is the laundry with loads of storage, and the main bathroom with a large shower.
The living hub accesses a massive Laserlite-topped pergola above brick paving; banks of camellias and a subtle water feature add greenery and ambience to downtime gatherings.
A brick walkway heads from here to a Colorbond shed and a densely planted backyard where a combination of silver birches and low shrubs strike an attractive note. Boxed vegie gardens are ready for summer planting and subsequent harvest. On about 950 square metres, the house also has ducted heating and a split-system â and sparkling presentation ready for a hassle-free move-in day.

Little River 69 Flinders Street
41 Market Road, Werribee

September 13th 2014

Dear Bassam and Team,
We wish to thank-you for your combined efforts in the recent sale of our much loved family home at 41 Market Road Werribee. Thank-you Bassam for your generosity in arranging meetings that suited both Luke and myself (no doubt at the expense of your family time), for your advice and suggestions on how to best present and market our home and for your exceptionally prompt responses to telephone calls, texts and emails. When we requested additional signage to advertise our open for inspection times, this was arranged quickly and reliably for each of the subsequent open times â thank-you. We are also grateful toTony and Margot, both of whom brought interested parties to our home for private inspections. It was great to talk withTony and receive his feedback about the inspections â we appreciated his positive outlook and helpful advice. When Margot phoned to arrange the private inspection that resulted in the sale of our home, she too was most obliging and lovely to speak with. We are very happy with the sale that Margot and Bassam negotiated for us â a reflection of the excellent team work amongst the staff atYPA. We would recommend Bassam and his team atYPA to anyone looking for a professional and energetic sales team.
Kind regards Chris & Luke Brown

Werribeeâs rising stars bear watching
Werribee Bears coach Aaron Tiananga is con dent his clubâs run to the Victorian Rugby Leagueâs rst grade nals can open doors for its most talented young players.
e Bears played in the top tier nals for the rst time but had no state representatives or players a liated with the Melbourne Storm at under-age level.
Tiananga said the time was right for the Storm and the state selectors to start looking at his players for representative duties.
âHopefully selectors will start looking at our club,â Tiananga said.
âI can pinpoint quite a few players who should be in representative sides.â
âWith us not having any representatives this year, it shows the strong base of players that we have in our team.â
Phillip Pese is at the top of the list of players Tiananga will be urging for a look in.
e 22-year-old full-back, who has played representative football in his native New Zealand, excited with his line-breaking runs this season.
âHeâs been devastating,â Tiananga said.
âIâd say heâs up there as one of the best full-backs in the VRL.
âHeâs still at that ripe age, but heâs got the rugby league smarts, he knows what to do and at that age, thatâs really good.â
John Figota is another player Tiananga would be proud to spruik.
At just 19, he has taken on an immense role in the Bears forward pack with his fearless o ence and solid defence.
âHeâs built like a brick and has the speed and power combined in one,â Tiananga said.
If you want a proven try-scorer, look no further than Lealo sa Malasia. Malasia is a potent nisher out wide because of his ability
to think ahead of the play and use his sidestep to good e ect.
âHeâs a try-scoring machine that boy,â Tiananga said. âHe can step inside anyone because heâs got the speed and the execution.â
Tiananga said there was a hunger within the squad to get better and start making a play for representative teams.
What strikes him most is their passion for rugby league and their ambition to make it to a higher level.
â ey breathe and live rugby league,â Tiananga said.
â ey really want to make it into representative sides and even as far as the NRL.
âIâll de nitely try and push these boys if I can somehow help them because they deserve a look in.â

Hornets all set for jump

Initsthirdyearofexistence,Truganinaisready to be promoted from the Football Federation Victoria menâs state league 5 west.
But 90 minutes of tough football against bogey side Lara on Saturday may dictate otherwise.
In an identical scenario to the one that faced the Hornets in last weekendâs penultimate round, theycanstillbepromotedaschampions, nish second to be promoted or miss out on promotion altogether.
ey will need to break new ground against Lara in the nal game of the season if they are to win the title.

e Hornets were safe and sound for the best partof75minutes,givingasgoodastheygotin an attacking sense.
e last 15 minutes were a di erent story, making for nervous moments for Hornets coach Achille Mellini and his players.
â ey [Spring Hills] went really close to winning the game, they hit the post and our keeper [James Fenech] had to make a couple of good saves,â Lunedai said.
âWe couldâve even lost that game in the last few minutes. e important thing was not to lose, so one point is good.â
Fenech produced one of his best games in goal in the seniors. He rose to every challenge thrown his way in the nal 15 minutes to keep a clean sheet.
Best-on-ground was Carlo Mellini in the heart of the Hornetsâ defence. Mellini took the honours in a head-to-head battle with Spring Hillsâ danger man Nathan Speakman.
âHe had another outstanding game at the back,â Lunedai said of Mellini. âHe stopped a lot of their counter attacks.â
Lunedai believes the time is right for the Hornets to jump up a division.
Unfortunately, there are three deserving sides, but only two spots available.
If the Hornets beat Lara, they will be promoted, no questions asked.
If they lose or draw, the waters are a whole lot murkier with so many outcomes possible.
In the NPL, Werribee City and Port Melbourne staved o relegation with a 1-1 draw at SS Anderson Oval on Sunday.
e Bees got the go-ahead goal in the 72nd minute through Matthew Cundari and kept the Sharks out until the dying seconds when Connor Redden red in an equaliser for the Sharks.
e draw has kept both clubs in the top- ight for next season.
ey both nished on 28 points, one point ahead of second-last Ballarat Red Devils, who lost 2-0 to Oakleigh on a drama- lled nal day of the season.

â The WRFL grand nal day had just about everything. Tim Watsonâs arrival at Avalon Airport Oval in the Channel 7 helicopter to present the premiership cup to WRFL president Bruce Mildenhall was a highlight, as was the performance of Deer Park in the main game. They were awesome and deserve their place in history as the rst division 1 side to go through a season unbeaten. Congratulations to coach Marc Bullen, his players and everyone involved at the club. Bullen, captain Chris Stewart and Ryan Hargrave told me post-match they were keen to go for the âthreepeatâ in 2015. Deer Park has been the talk of suburban footy all year, but that was expected after the high-pro le recruiting and constant conjecture about player payments. Iâve given my opinions on money in suburban football through this column and Iâve spoken publicly and privately with many of the clubâs administrators, sponsors and players. Some of my opinions have not been well received by people who support Deer Park. Thatâs ne. After all, itâs my opinion and I think open debate is a healthy and appropriate way to discuss any issue. But when you make it personal, as a few did on Saturday, you do yourself and your club a disservice.
â Sometimes you just know a footballer is going to be a good coach and I can think of no better examples than former Werribee captains Dom Gleeson and Robbie Castello. Dom has just been named coach of Torquay Tigers in the BLF and Robbie has the job at Maribyrnong Park in the Essendon District League. Theyâll both be brilliant and I hope they pursue roles at a higher level in future. Their commitment as players was as good as Iâve seen and I know theyâll be more meticulous as coaches. There are only a few coaches jobs going in local ranks, with Sunshine, Port Melbourne Colts and Wyndhamvale Falcons the pick of them.
â Can Footscray win its rst ag in 16 years when the Bulldogs meet reigning premier Box Hill Hawks in the VFL grand nal at Etihad stadium on Sunday? The excitement the side has given the club this year has been enormous and nobody is more excited than president Peter Gordon. The last ag the Bulldogs won was the reserves premiership in 1998. It will be a massive achievement if Chris Maple can bring a ag back to Whitten Oval.

Young Saints in ag heaven
By Liam Twomey
St Albans has secured its rst piece of senior silverware for nearly a decade by winning the WRFL division 1 reserves premiership on Saturday.
e Saints proved too good for local rival Sunshine and led at every change on their way to a 19-point win at Chirnside Park in Werribee.
However, it wasnât all smooth sailing for St Albans which was challenged a number of times by the red up Kangaroos.
A er trailing by 27 points at half-time, Sunshine got right back into the contest during the third term.
e Kangaroos controlled the ball for long passages of play and made the most of their chances to cut the margin to just two goals going into the nal break.
But, as they have done all year, the young Saints found another gear when the moment called for it. St Albans kicked three last term goals to secure the 11.14 (80) to 8.13 (61) win.
Saints coach Aidan Stott was delighted with the ght shown by his side.
âIt has been building and building,â he said.
âWe were challenged today and to ght it out and get the job done, we are absolutely rapt.
âWe knew we had to dig deep and we werenât going to ease up until that nal siren.
ââWejustbroughtsomuche orttothecontest and I couldnât be prouder of the players.â
Saturdayâs premiership was St Albansâ rst at senior level for nine years.
Stott believes the win could kick o a strong era for the club. He said he expected several players to progress to senior football next season. âWeseealotoftheseguysbeingableto push up and play senior footy,â he said.

âWe basically had a bunch of boys out there against the men at Sunshine. A few of them grew into men today.

Lionsâ roar is too loud for Spotty
By Lance Jenkinson
Deer Park is the rst club in the history of Western Region Football League division 1 to land the premiership in an undefeated season.
e Lions are the kings of the jungle for the second year running a er their star-studded line-up obliterated Spotswood by 77 points in a desperately lopsided grand nal at Chirnside Park in Werribee on Saturday.
e Lions blitzed from the outset, recording an incredible 48 scoring shots to 21.
Lions veteran Luke Summers said he was rapt to be part of âhistory in the makingâ.
â is is the ultimate â an unbelievable feeling,â he said.
e last time Deer Park achieved a premiership repeat was way back in 1939-41, when it won three in a row under the clubâs former club, ICI.
is was a much easier grand nal for the Lions to win than last yearâs one-point cli anger win over Spotswood, which has lost the past three season deciders.
e Lions have claimed four premierships fromeightconsecutivegrand nalappearances.
e tipping point on Saturday came at the 19-minute mark of the third quarter when Shylo Smith booted the goal of the game from tightupontheboundaryattheswimmingpool end with barely a icker of daylight between the goal posts.
at put the Lions 47 points up and broke the spirit of the Woodsmen, who until then had been staging a mini- ghtback early in the third term.
e Lions might have had the game under lock and key before half-time had they not missed a bevy of scoring opportunities.
âIf we hadâve kicked straight, I donât know what the record was for a grand nal win, but we probably wouldâve broken the record,â Summers said.
Spotswood booted the rst goal of the game, ttingly through onballer David Iaccarino.
Iaccarino would have ve goals by gameâs end to be the clear stand-out player on his side. While the Woodsmen had early success at the stoppages through ruckman Murray Boyd and onballers Iaccarino, Shaun Ross and Tom Langlands, they were getting beaten in all other areas of the ground.
e Woodsmenâs defensive unit was jittery from the rst bounce, turning the ball over with dinky short passes and seeing the ball returned with interest.
e Lions did not nd their range in the rst quarter but ran riot in the second with nine goals to two.
e Lion machine was ring on all cylinders from the second term onwards, with winners in blue and gold guernseys all over the park. As it so o en has, it started in the middle with ruckman Chris Stewart, one of the great players in his position in the modern era of the western suburbs competition.
Stewart fed the ball on a platter to runners Smith, Jack Purton-Smith and Rhett King. Smith nished with ve goals from the centre â an incredible performance that on another day might have won him the player-of-the-game medal.
Ben Foley and Jackson Barling were steady in the key defensive posts, while Shaun Harrison was superb with his intercept marking and rebound out of the back half. Daniel Cooper and James Condos were a constant headache for the Woodsmen defenders.
But the Herb Pascarl Medal honours for best-on-ground went to Kwame McHarg. He nished with seven goals and had barely a scratch on him because his dancing feet made it nigh on impossible for the Woodsmen to lay a nger on him.
Summers, soo entheonetaggedinprevious years, is a luxury for Deer Park player-coach Marc Bullen.
While the opposition has been putting work into the Lionsâ former AFL crew of Bullen, Ryan Houlihan, Ryan Hargrave, Bret ornton and Brent Guerra, along with the host of

top-notch mid elders on their books, Summers has lapped up the chance to enjoy a bit more freedom.
âWhen you see the team that comes out on to the eld âĶ Iâm probably the 10th in line with blokes like Shylo Smith, Kwame McHarg, who won the medal, Heath Ayres and these blokes, it makes my job a bit easier,â Summers said.
It was an extra special day for Summers, who missed last yearâs grand nal through suspension. e 33-year-old was the captain of the Lionsâ side that went undefeated in 2009 to win the division 2 ag.
A former junior at the club, Summers returned to achieve what he described as âthe ultimateâ of winning a division 1 premiership.
âI knew [club president] Mark McGoldrick pretty well â he coached me when I was 16 years old,â Summers said. âHe asked me to come back to the club when it was in a bad way in division 2.
âAnd here I am today, the club is back where it should be and Iâm stoked.
âIâm just rapt to get an A-grade premiership, thatâs what I came to the club for and it nally paid o . e turnaround is unbelievable.â

Perfect Park completes its western region blitz
For two successive years, Deer Park has had Spotswoodâs measure on the Western Region Football Leagueâs biggest stage.
And while Saturdayâs 77-point grand nal win didnât match the drama of a one-point victory 12 months earlier, Deer Park playing coach Marc Bullen said the feeling was just as special.
âTwelve months ago the heart was probably still racing when I was talking to you guys,â he said a er Saturdayâs match.
â e feeling never changes. To be a leader of a terri c bunch of people, not only at the club but also the people associated with it âĶ itâs a
true re ection of where the club has been. We came down to second division about seven years ago and now weâre sitting on top. While weâre up, weâll continue to work hard and strive for success.â

In a blistering second term, the Lions exed their muscle with Kwame McHarg, Chris Stewart, Heath Ayres, Shylo Smith and Bullen all hitting the scoreboard. e 30 minutes of dominance gave Deer Park a lead of 54 points
and put the result all but out of Spotswoodâs reach by half-time.

â[David] Iaccarino got forward and kicked two goals on us [in the rst quarter] and I was thinkingthisisnâthowitâssupposedtopanout,â he said. âWe fought back midway through that rst quarter and peppered the goals.
âWe probably had too many blokes hunting their own footy forward of centre. We came out in that second quarter and put the game behind us.â
Deer Park won all 18 matches in the

McHarg seizes moment
Kwame McHarg has long been considered the best player in the Western Region Football League â and on Saturday he showed why. When the game was still up for grabs early in the second term, McHarg owned the big moment, streaming down the wing and taking multiple bounces before handing o a goal to teammate Shylo Smith. at passage of play seemed to kickstart the Lions, who never looked like losing from that point on. McHarg went on to kick seven goals and was named the best player on the ground. âIt is a great feeling,â he said a er the nal siren. âI had never actually won a ag until

last year with Deer Park so to win two â I am just ecstatic. It is always good to play well. Iâm pretty happy with everything at the moment. Someonehadtoli andIjustwantedtobethat person.â
McHarg dominated the Western Region Football League division 1 competition all season, booting 56 goals as a mid elder.
He has been named in his sideâs best players in 11 of their 20 wins.
Deer Park coach Marc Bullen was full of praise for his star.
âHe is an outstanding player,â Bullen said. âWe recruited him last year and he has gone

to another level this year. Whether he is in the air on the ground or in the mid eld, he is a rst-class player.â
Having previously played VFL for Williamstown, McHarg said he was weighing up whether to play at a higher level next year.
While VFL clubs would be lining up to secure his signature, Deer Park captain Chris Stewart believes McHarg can play even higher.
âHe is just a ridiculously good footballer,â Stewart said. âIf the AFL isnât on to him yet, I donât know what they are looking at.â

Centurions a team for the ages
By Lance Jenkinson
Werribee Centrals have ruled the Geelong District A-grade netball competition with an iron st.
e Centurions are back-to-back premiers and have done it mercilessly, with consecutive undefeated seasons.
Teams have tried and failed to bring them down, but the Centurionsâ insatiable quest for perfection was too strong, churning out 40 wins from 40 matches under the watchful eyes of second-year coach Lina Iuta, who is yet to taste defeat in her role.
e Centurions overcame Bell Post Hill on Saturday with a hard-fought 39-33 win in the grand nal at St Albans Reserve.
Centurions goaler Ellie Tubbs, the competitionâs leading shooter and recipient of best-on-court honours in the season decider, spoke of an unbreakable sisterhood and the teamâs unwavering belief.
âWeâre all just so happy, so proud of each other,ââ she said. ââWe have such trust in each other, weâre such a strong team unit.â

â ere were times when youâd feel like you were comfortable âĶ but their goaler Jess Crow was putting them in from long distances and kept bringing it back to three or four.

Invicta: quite a bit of Bentley
By Alistair Kennedy
e Invicta had a relatively short production life. Introduced in the 1920s, the cars were hand-built in Surrey, England, until 1933.
It would appear that Noel Macklin, who conceived the design, was very impressed with Bentley cars as the Invicta had a Bentley-like appearance in more ways than one. If you compared the front-end styling and even the useofrivetedbonnetpanels, therewasastrong similarity between the two makes.
By 1930 there were two versions of the 4.5 Invicta available. ese were the high-chassis A-type and the much-lowered, charismatic S-type sports car. Both models carried price tags similar to that of the similarly-styled Bentleys.
In the original models, a Coventry-Climax engine was used, but shortly a er its introduction, a more rugged six-cylinder, overhead valve engine tted with two horizontal SU carburettors and developing 86kW was purchased from Henry Meadows of Wolverhampton.
is power unit, which came in a variety of sizes, including the 4.5-litre, was also supplied toLagondaandothervehiclemanufactures. An engine of this type was a good choice as it had loads of torque, as did similar engines of this era, giving the car lots of appeal to those who could a ord it. With a top speed approaching 150km/h, the Invicta met most enthusiastsâ needs.
Still,ithadafewdrawbacks:thehalf-elliptical front and rear suspension gave a rock-hard ride, while the drum brakes, operated by a rod system, o en failed to perform adequately.
Invicta died through lack of custom. Of the 500-or-so 4.5-litre Invictas made, only 77 were the smart-looking S-type sports car.
