Police Association secretary Ron Iddles told the crowd the City of Wyndham needed 111 police just to meet the state average ratio.

“ e current policing model is to have an average of 102 police per 100,000 people. Wyndham has 45 per 100,000 people – it’s a disgrace,” he said. “Crime in Wyndham went up 7.5 per cent [in 2013-14] and robberies went up 70 per cent; assaults and car the s were up,

Detective Senior Constable O’Mahoney, a Wyndham Police Association delegate whose family has lived in the area more than 60 years, said the city’s o cers were at breaking point.

He said that for too long Wyndham o cers had been working double shi s and coming in on days o to cover for sick or burnt-out colleagues. ‘‘It can’t continue. Every day, I see and hear members who are exhausted and stressed because of the lack of resources. It isn’t fair on them or the people of Wyndham.”

A er speaking to a close family friend who wasapoliceo ceratWerribeeinthelate1970s and early 1980s, Detective Senior Constable O’Mahoney said he “nearly fell o his chair” when he discovered police numbers were similar to those at Werribee today, despite a tenfold population increase.

“It means there are e ectively fewer rst responder police in Wyndham than there were in the late 1970s.”

Senior Sergeant Iddles said the current method of basing police allocations on crime statistics was awed. “It’s like looking in the rear-vision mirror.”

Fields of gold have sprung up across Wyndham as the canola season reaches full swing. Wyndham Vale’s Chantelle Saleh was among those to enjoy the colourful transformation last weekend. Dozens of canola crops are harvested throughout Wyndham each year. The owering plant is grown for its seed, which is crushed for use in cooking oils and margarine.

‘Ice’ scourge stretches services

Wyndham’s health services are being stretched to the limit as they tackle Victoria’s ‘ice’ scourge.

In the 12 months to July, 67 people a ected by crystal methamphetamine sought treatment at Werribee Mercy Hospital’s emergency department.

Mercy Health executive director of health services Linda Mellors said methamphetamine accounted for about 7 per cent of all alcohol or drug-related presentations to the hospital.

“ e majority of emergency department sta have been involved in the treatment of a patient under the in uence of crystal methamphetamine [ice],” Dr Mellors said.

Odyssey Community Services, which provides treatment and support services to address alcohol and other drug issues, has recently opened an outreach service at Anglicare in Werribee.

Odyssey executive manager Neos Zavrou said there was overwhelming demand across the western suburbs.

“We receive more than 100 calls a day from

clients seeking treatment for drug or alcohol addictions. e phone is

hot,” he said. “ ere’s no doubt the use of ice in the community is increasing … it’s impacting on the levels of violence in the community and presentations to hospital emergency departments.”

A report by the Law Reform, Drugs and Crime Prevention Committee, tabled in State Parliament last week, made 54 recommendations to the government on how to deal with the spread of ice, while a new television advertising campaign, now under

Teacher’s kids ‘crawling the walls’

A former Werribee Secondary College teacher who su ered a nervous breakdown a er being forced to teach unruly students has won almost $770,000 in damages.

Peter Doulis, 48, sued the state government, saying he was allocated an unduly heavy workload of “feral” classes at the college between 1998 and 2004.

e Supreme Court heard that in 2000, the college divided its years 8, 9 and 10 classes into ve streams – accelerated, high achievers, medium achievers, low achievers and foundation.

Mr Doulis, who now su ers chronic severe depression, argued his classes were made

up almost exclusively of the school’s most challenging students, including those who su ered from a range of disabilities including autism, dyslexia and Asperger’s syndrome, and others who were very badly behaved.

He told the court that even before class, his students were “all hyper” and “virtually crawling up the walls outside the classroom”.

He claimed he once had to break up an incident in which a student was holding another student down and burning his jumper with a ame-thrower made from a deodorant can and a lighter.

Last Friday, Supreme Court Justice Timothy Ginnane ruled the school had breached its duty

of care to Mr Doulis because it did not reduce the number of di cult classes he had to teach or support him when he returned to work.

Fire ghter lift for Wyndham

e number of career re ghters in Wyndham has been boosted, with the CFA assigning four recent graduates to the area.

Hoppers Crossing will receive two new re ghters – Geelong’s Andrew Ellise and Daniel Bourke from Glen Waverley. Geelong’s Nick French and Torquay’s Chris Brown have been posted to Point Cook.

e men were among 25 re ghters to graduate from the CFA’s Fiskville Training College late last month.

It is believed that no career re ghters were available between 6pm, Tuesday, and8amthenextday. eCFAmaintains that the station was not closed as a result of the sta shortage, saying that it reverted to volunteer manning.

A spokesman said two career re ghters from Point Cook had been redeployed to Hoppers Crossing. e spokesman would not say why the re ghters had been sent to another station.

He said there was no danger to the public, and at least two brigades would have responded to any emergency that may have arisen.

City waits on complaint decision

Wyndham council will not consider taking action against councillor Intaj Khan until the Local Government Inspectorate has nished investigating a complaint made against him.

As reported by Star Weekly, a Wyndham resident lodged a complaint with the inspectorate, alleging that Cr Khan had misused his position as a councillor to promote his business interests in a council-branded advertisement.

e complaint surrounds an advertisement in the July edition of Alwasat, a western suburbs-based Arabic newspaper.

e advertisement features a photo of Cr Khan, a Ramadan message, Wyndham council’s logo and web address, and a listing of three schools either owned or managed by Cr Khan. A similar advertisement featuring Cr Khan appeared in Alwasat’s July 2013 edition. Both advertisements appeared without the council’s knowledge or approval.

Cr Khan maintains that the advertisements were “free community greetings”.

Wyndham council chief executive Kerry ompson said the council would not consider internal action until the inspectorate’s investigation was over.

“Once … recommendations [are] made, we will be in a position to determine whether any internal actions are required. It is important to point out that these allegations are treated very seriously.”

AspokesmanfortheInfrastructureandLocal Government department said the inspectorate would assess the complaint to determine if it fell under its jurisdiction.

Ifaninvestigationisnecessary, thecomplaint will be passed on to an investigator and the parties involved will be interviewed.

Medal nds its way home

A Werribee woman has found her grandfather’s long-lost World War I medal a er it was uncovered about 150 kilometres from her home.

Former Inverloch RSL president Gordon Garbutt presented Linda Scott with the medal earlier this month a er a Wonthaggi woman gave it to the RSL. e woman told Mr Garbutt she found the medal when tidying up her grandparents’ home in Wonthaggi.

A er two years of trying to nd the medal’s owner, Mr Garbutt contacted Melbourne City RSL research o cer Bill Wyndham to ask for help.

Eventually, Mr Wyndham was able to work out that it belonged to Mrs Scott’s grandfather, Arthur Lane, who joined the army in October 1916 at the age of 25. Mrs Scott said she was surprised the medal was in Wonthaggi, when her grandfather lived in the Yarraville area. She said her grandfather served in France and Belgium, was badly injured on the front line in Belgium in October 1917 and was gassed in August 1918. He returned home to his family in November 1919.

“I was six when my grandfather died,” Mrs Scott said. “I can remember him coughing and that he was very ill.”

Man jailed over hidden ‘ice’ haul

A Point Cook man has been jailed over 161.5kg of methamphetamines concealed in the tyres of a truck imported from China.

Rhys Cini, 30, faced the Supreme Court on August 29 a er earlier pleading guilty to attempting to possess an unlawfully imported border-controlled drug.

He was sentenced to 10 years’ jail with a non-parole period of six years.

e court heard that Cini and his father, Patrick, were arrested by police on October 9 last year a er police found 205 one-kilogram packages containing methamphetamines in the tyres of a tractor truck on a ship docked at the Port of Brisbane.

Police said the packages contained ice with a potential street value of between $100 million and $200 million.

e truck had been imported by a company owned by Patrick Cini.

e ship had come from China and was bound for Melbourne.

Police removed the packages, replaced them with an “inert substance” and let the ship continue to Melbourne.

e court heard that the Cinis went to the Port of Melbourne on October 3, collected the truck and drove it to a factory in Brooklyn.

ey began removing the packages from the truck tyres the next day.

Over the next few days, the packages were taken to storage facilities in Hoppers Crossing, Rhys Cini’s house and Patrick Cini’s house, while others were le at the

factory. Police found three of the packages in the ceiling of one of the houses.

Delivering his sentence, Justice Michael Croucher said it was important to remind others in the community they would receive “sternandjustpunishment”forsucho ences.

“Anyone who has observed the criminal law in recent years knows the consumption of methamphetamines tends to be related to human misery in many forms,” he said.

‘‘ The consumption of methamphetamines is related to human misery in many forms ’’ - Justice Croucher

“To take one example, in this court, we see the misery on the faces of those whose loved ones have been injured or killed by persons a ected by ice, and the disbelief on the faces of families of the o enders when their loved ones are sent to prison. It is just awful.”

Justice Croucher said that while such outcomes were not to be factored into the sentences imposed, the court was ‘‘entitled to say that general deterrence, just punishment and denunciation are important considerations when sentencing for o ences of this nature”.

“ e community should also know that this court will denounce such behaviour. And I do.”

Country chords on the park

Werribee Park’s Live on the Lawn concert is getting a country makeover. Some of Australia’s biggest country-rock acts will perform at the annual outdoor concert next February. Among them will be Golden Guitar winners Lee Kernaghan, Kasey Chambers and Adam Brand (pictured). The event, formerly known as Legends on the Lawn, will be held on the great lawn at Werribee Park on Sunday, February 22. Wyndham mayor Bob Fairclough said Live on the Lawn would showcase the cream of Australian country-rock. “It will be a unique event for Victoria … Live on the Lawn is so much more than the usual stadium show.” He said the concert, now in its fth year, gave people a chance to experience live music while enjoying a picnic with family and friends. Kevin Hillier has an idea on how to slow speeding drivers

Briefs

Public transport push

e have had one of those electronic speed signs parked in our street for the past week. It’s one of those that shows you how fast you’re going, and if you’re under the limit (50km/h in this case) a smiley face comes up. If you’re over, it reads ‘too fast’. So what’s the point? I watched this closely and about 75 per cent of cars were well over the limit. ere’s de nitely a speeding problem in my street. My problem is that the sign was on the wrong side of the road as most of the speeding happens going the other way. Would it not make more sense to have these cameras actually operating as proper speed cameras? Instead of ‘too fast’, how about ‘you’re nicked’ or ‘say goodbye to three points and 200 bucks’. at would slow drivers down immediately. On that subject, I saw a white ute in my rear vision mirror on Hogans Road last week. It was just on dark and not quite time to turn on headlights, which was handy as I could see that one of his headlights and one of his park lights weresmashed.Whenhepassedme, atwellover the60limit,Isawthattwoofhistaillightswere

also broken. ere was no point reporting it either ... he had no number plates! And how many white utes are there in the west?

Health hits ‘cruel’ to Wyndham

Wyndham residents will be Australia’s hardest hit if the federal government’s proposed GP co-paymentandchangestothePharmaceutical Bene ts Scheme go ahead, according to federal Lalor MP Joanne Ryan.

e Labor MP said Health Department gures revealed the changes would cost Lalor $52 million over four years, or an average of $297 per person.

e Medicare co-payment fee of $7 for GP visits, blood tests and X-rays was announced in this year’s federal budget.

Meanwhile, from next year, some patients will have to pay an extra $5 for PBS-subsidised prescriptions, while PBS safety net threshold amounts will also rise.

“ e combination of Tony Abbott’s new GP tax and his medicines price hike mean sick Australians will pay more,” Ms Ryan said.

“It’s a cruel and heartless hit on those in Lalor who can least a ord it – the sick and the vulnerable.

“ e GP tax and hospital cuts will increase emergency department waiting times and reduce the number of hospital beds across Lalor.”

Party t for a queen

Nancy Walsh has achieved a lot in her 100 years, but she lists her greatest achievement as being chosen to serve the Queen during Her Majesty’s second visit to Melbourne in 1963.

Mrs Walsh, who was working at the Hotel Windsor, was hand-chosen by management to wait on the Queen when she visited Flemington Racecourse.

“ eysentabigcartotakemetoFlemington and when I got there, I was introduced to the police o cers who were guarding the area,” she says. “I remember there being pink begonia owers that matched the Queen’s dress.

“When I got back to the Windsor, the ladies came up to me and said, ‘I would love to have done what you did’.’’

MrsWalshwasborninHobartonSeptember 17, 1914. She had four sisters and two brothers. Heavily involved in sports as a child, she played in championship netball teams and

won countless running medals, which she still treasures dearly.

She moved to Newport in 1921 before starting work at the Hotel Windsor.

Mrs Walsh says the secret to her longevity is that she has lived “a good life”.

“You should love everybody and live a good life,” she says.

“Prayer helps me. I am also so lucky to have my family … my son Stephen, my daughter-in-law [Antoinette] and my two granddaughters. I don’t know what I would do without them.”

Mrs Walsh will celebrate her 100th birthday next Wednesday with her friends and sta at Glendale Aged Care Hostel, before joining her family at Werribee Mansion on September 21.

As reported by Star Weekly in May, gures from the National Health Performance AuthorityrevealthatthemajorityofWyndham residentsrelyonbulk-billedGPclinicsfortheir healthcare.

e authority’s gures show that in 2012-13, 91 per cent of doctors’ appointments in the South Western Melbourne Medicare Local (SWMML) area, which covers Wyndham and Hobsons Bay, were bulk-billed.

SWMML chief executive Gaylene Coulton warned that introducing a $7 co-payment for GP visits and other health services from July, 2015, would directly a ect the people who

could a ord it the least, and people might put o seeing a doctor.

“Best-practice evidence shows that primary healthcare is the most economical way to manage the high cost of health service delivery,” she said.

Wyndham Vale single mum Kerry Arch, who runs a national support group for single parents, said the co-payment would make visiting the doctor too expensive for some families.

“We will have single parents who are living on such a tight budget that they can’t a ord to take their children to the doctor,” she said.

Kids unrestrained in crash car

Wyndham police say it was “pure luck” that they were not called to a triple fatality last Saturday night a er a car carrying three children who were unrestrained crashed into a power pole and through a set of iron gates. e accident happened on Cherry Lane, Laverton North, about 6.50pm.

Policebelievethestationwagon, drivenbyan unlicensed Shepparton man, 28, was travelling about 120km/h in a 60km/h zone when the driver lost control of the vehicle.

Werribee’s Kirrilee Ord, 21, her brother Mitchell, 12, and boyfriend Ben Warlond, 24, were hiking in Lerderderg State Park near Bacchus Marsh on Sunday when they became lost. e trio were all wearing shorts and T-shirts and had taken only one packet of Twisties to share on what was planned to be a two-hour walk.

Kirrilee’s half-sister Chelsea Newby raised the alarm just a er 4pm when they failed to return to their campsite.

Family members spent a sleepless night around a camp re, waiting for news as the trio huddled together with their American pitbull, Sasha, while temperatures plunged to about 6 degrees. Search and rescue teams located the bushwalkers at 7.40am on Monday, about ve kilometres from their campsite.

ey were given food and water before walking out of the bush with police and being reunited with family just a er 10am.

Kirrilee, an experienced camper, said she had turned the Twisties packet inside out to its re ective side in an e ort to signal helicopters.

When that failed to work, she used her knowledge from Girl Guides and the Scouts to build a shelter from bark, rocks and reeds. ey then huddled together to try and stay warm until help arrived.

“It was pretty cold, but the dog kept us all warm,” she said. “We were all snuggled in pretty tight.”

Police search and rescue’s Leading Senior Constable Matt Roberts said the trio had done the right thing by staying in the one place once they became lost. About 30 people from police and SES were involved in the overnight search.

Seeing tatts in a different light

An exhibition which blurs the lines between the

e Shi ing Skins exhibition by Deakin University PhD student Alison Bennett features up-close, detailed prints of skin marked by tattoos.

e images have been overlaid with 3Daugmented reality technology, which uses computer-generated sensory inputs to create a series of 3D moving images that jump out at the viewer.

e work is part of Ms Bennett’s PhD research into the nature of surfaces in digital photography.

She says her work plays with the boundaries between the digital and physical worlds, encouraging people to re-think how they view a photograph on a digital surface.

To capture the images, Ms Bennett rolled a re-fashioned atbed scanner around her subject’s bodies.

Shesaidusingthescannerhelpedto“unwrap the skin” and added an air of mystery to the exhibition as people were not quite sure which part of the body they were looking at.

Ms Bennett says she chose to photograph tattoos because she’s interested in the way people use them to signal who they are.

Dogs put on the couch

Researchers at the University of Melbourne’s Werribee vet school are hoping to nd a way to prevent anxiety in dogs.

A group of dogs and their owners visited the Princes Highway vet hospital last week to take part in a behavioural study designed to provide researchers with more information about the causes of anxiety in dogs.

Participating in the study were Tilly, a jack russell terrier; Konah, a pointer crossbreed; and Motzi, a kelpie-terrier cross.

Lead investigator and animal behaviourist Dennis Wormald said the study focused on

terriers, companion dogs and gun dogs aged between 18 months and eight years, who were healthy and desexed.

He said some of the dogs had behavioural problems, while others did not.

edogstookpartinaseriesofbehavioural tests, allowing researchers to see how they responded to di erent situations.

ey were rst allowed to roam freely around an empty room for 10 minutes.

en they were played a series of noises and put in a room with two di erent surfaces. All their responses were recorded and monitored.

Dr Wormald said the study, which had

He said anxiety was believed to predispose dogs to a range of behavioural problems including separation anxiety, noise phobias, inter-dog aggression, impulse control aggression and fear aggression.

“Anxiety in dogs seems to be an increasing problem in modern society,” he said. “To understand why, and how to best prevent anxiety, we need a consistent test that can be used to measure anxiety in dogs.

Jobs drive for disabled people

Wyndham employers are being encouraged to give the careers of people with a disability a jump start as part of a new campaign.

Launched in Werribee last week by disability employment services provider Advanced Personnel Management, the campaign will secure 40 jobs for people with disabilities across the western suburbs over the next four weeks.

APM chief executive Michael Hobday said organisations including Wyndham council and the Western Bulldogs had thrown their support behind the initiative.

“Once local employers are engaged, our team will provide free and comprehensive support at all stages of the employment process, from assessment of jobseekers to job matching, transition to work and in-work support,” Mr Hobday said.

“What we’re trying to do is match a large number of jobseekers with employment in a short period of time.

“We want to get people started in the workforce, whether it’s 10 hours a week or full-time and to shine a light on people with disabilities and the bene ts they can o er employers.

“We’re hoping employers will look for the gold in each person and take an inclusive approach to searching for potential employees.”

Dear resident,

I

Federal Member for Lalor

firstly would like to thank local residents following my first year in the job as Federal Member for Lalor. It has been an honour and privilege to be your representative. It has been great to meet so many people in our vibrant community over the past year and I look forward to meeting many more of you in the year to come.

In the election campaign I told the people in the electorate of Lalor that I would come to Canberra to represent them—that I would come to Canberra to fight for them. And that is what I have been doing.

The past fortnight has been busy with two weeks of parliament sitting in Canberra. The first year anniversary of the Abbott Government has been a costly one for Lalor families. Health Department figures obtained by Labor have revealed the GP Tax and medicine price hikes will cost sick Australians in Lalor $52 million more over the next four years - the highest amount across the country. The combination of the new GP tax and the medicines price hike will cost every single person in Lalor an average of $297. A cruel and heartless hit on those in Lalor that can least afford it, the sick and the vulnerable.

The Abbott Government’s decision to also cut funding to local councils is deeply concerning given the transport issues faced by Lalor residents.

More than $3.36 million had been cut to Wyndham Council for local roads and other priority projects over the next three years. This cut is a short-sighted decision and will result in even further turmoil for local commuters who continue to battle road congestion across Lalor.

This program makes local roads safer by improving conditions and easing congestion. This decision is placing an unreasonable burden on Wyndham Council and will severely compromise road safety standards. And following a surprise deal done with millionaire Clive Palmer, the Government will rip $128 billion from the superannuation accounts of millions of Australians and hurt small business by cutting more than $5 billion of direct tax assistance.

Cuts across the board to families will also have a negative impact on local businesses and the economy with less disposable income for many.

Lalor residents deserve a government that will provide them with real opportunities. This Government is failing to represent the needs of people across Lalor and I will continue to fight on your behalf.

Kinders win funding reprieve

More than 2000 Wyndham children have been guaranteed access to 15 hours of kindergarten next year, a er the federal government pledged to provide kinder funding for four-year-olds for another 12 months.

In April, councils were told that the government could discontinue the funding in 2015, meaning they either had to nd the money themselves or reduce the number of hours children could attend kindergarten.

Last week, assistant Education Minister Sussan Ley announced the government would commit to providing $406 million for another year.

e state government already funds 10-hours of kindergarten education each week for four-year-olds.

Wyndham councillor Heather Marcus said kindergarten fees would have increased from $1460 a year to $2128 had the government not committed the funding.

Cr Marcus said the federal government’s decision recognised the importance of

Lives ruined at a stroke

Margaret Sytema knew something was wrong. It was one morning 18 years ago and she was working in the family’s Yarraville chicken shop.

A er an early start, every day like clockwork, she would get a phone call from her elderly mother about 7.30am to see if she was alright.

“When mum didn’t ring, I called my dad and he said, ‘Mum’s not well – she can’t talk’,” she said.

“ ey’d retired to Rockbank and were growing chickens for Steggles and were still quite active.”

Mrs Sytema rang her sister and when she arrived at hospital from work, her mother was in intensive care a er having a stroke.

“Mum was unconscious for 24 hours and we thought she wouldn’t make it,” she said.

“But her 50th wedding anniversary was coming up and we think she was determined to live for that.”

Mrs Sytema said that despite the massive stroke, her mother emerged from hospital and began the long rehabilitation process.

“Mum had to learn how to write, walk and talk again,” she said.

Mrs Sytema started accompanying her mother to the Weststroke Support Group, where she continues as treasurer even though her mother died in 1995.

e focus of National Stroke Week which continues until Sunday, is to encourage Australians to become more aware of stroke, understand their risks and the steps people can take to prevent it.

Stroke is Australia’s second biggest killer, with one in six people to be a ected in their lifetime.

Mrs Sytema said stroke did not discriminate.

“We have a man at the support group who was a truck driver. He had a stroke when he was 48 and he lost the use of his right hand,” she said. “ e night before my mum’s stroke she was cooking tea but she had a bad headache and she went to bed.

“It’s so important people make themselves

aware of the warning signs and if they suspect a stroke, to seek help straight away.”

e Weststroke Support Group meets at 10.30am on the rst Friday of the month at RecWest Footscray, corner Essex and Margaret streets, Footscray.

For more information phone Melva Morrison on 9317 7850 or to nd out about stroke visit www.strokefoundation.com.au.

Jail behind footlights

Tasmania’s notorious Point Puer boys’ prison was a place to be feared because of its regime of stern discipline and harsh punishments.

e prison near Port Arthur was the British Empire’s rst reformatory built exclusively for juvenile male convicts and about 3000 boys were sent there between 1834 and 1849.

Now a play by Werribee’s Alaine Beek based on the lives of boys at the prison is a nalist in an Australia-wide competition.

Point Of No Return is one of three productions shortlisted in the national one-act play competition run by Playhouse Players, a Melbourne-based community theatre society.

Developed with the help of Werribee Secondary College student Chris de Zeeuw, Point Of No Return will be directed by Mrs Beek and performed by the college drama club at the Richmond eatrette, in Church Street, next month.

“It centres on ve boys in prison and starts with a new boy being introduced to the group,”

she said. “He’s more educated than the others, who are more streetwise, and the play centres on how he ts in, the group’s hierarchy, how friendships change and how they stand up to the mean, old guard.”

Mrs Beek says the roles are performed by boysofasimilarage.“Teenagershaveleadersin a group, those who get along, those who don’t; there are arguments, and in this play all the boys get to act their age.” Point Of No Return runs from October 9-11. Tickets are available at www.playhouseplayers.org.au/bookings.

Laughter ows in foster family

Alice de Zwart-Slamani enjoys opening her family home to teenagers in need of love and support.

For the past three years, the Werribee mum-of-three has been a foster carer.

Ms de Zwart-Slamani and husband Mounir Slamani o er short-term care to teenage girls but have been known to open their home to teenage boys and younger children in need of emergency care.

Since signing up as foster carers a er seeing an advertisement calling for more carers in the Wyndham area, the couple have now welcomed 25 children into their home.

At the time, the family had just moved to Werribee from the US and was keen to lend a hand to children in need.

“It’s extremely rewarding knowing you are able to provide a loving and supportive environment for somebody who’s had less than that in their life,” Ms de Zwart-Slamani said. “It’s nice to know you have enough love and happiness in your house to share. It’s about having laughs around the dinner table and sharing that with somebody.”

MsdeZwart-Slamanisaidherownchildren, aged between 10 and 16, loved having foster children in the house and getting to know new people. e family chose to foster mainly teenage girls, believing they could help them make life-changing decisions.

Disability support group Mambourin has won one of Australia’s top awards for workplace excellence. Mambourin received an Australian Disability Enterprises Excellence Award earlier this month for its dedication to improving the lives of people living with a disability. The organisation helps its clients nd work across the western suburbs, ranging from packing and assembly jobs to light manufacturing and garden maintenance. Some of its workers are employed by Sanctuary Lakes, where they help maintain the resort’s grounds. Mambourin chief executive Rohan Braddy said the award was recognition of the hard work the supported employees do every day. “Our teams are so enthusiastic about what they do and put 100 per cent in every day they’re at work,” he said. “If anyone is not feeling great or needs a friend to speak to, the workplace environment is such that they can feel comfortable asking for help.”

“With teenagers it’s less parenting, like saying, ‘It’s time to wash your hair’, and more about learning to do banking and

getting jobs,” Ms de Zwart-Slamani said. “We want to get them to think about the consequences of decisions. We’re trying to raise understanding, free-thinking kids who understand responsibility.”

Ms de Zwart-Slamani believes being a foster carer has also helped her feel “worthy”. About 10 years ago, she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Five years ago, her condition forced her to stop work.

“I felt like I had no purpose for about 18 months,” she said. “Being a foster carer has lled a big gap in my self-worth.”

Foster Care Week runs until September 20. For more information call 8470 9999.

MY WYNDHAM

Giving back to the community has a been a high priority for Werribee Lions member and Tarneit resident Michael Eather, writes Rebecca Miller.

What’s your connection to the local community?

I’ve lived in Tarneit for six years. Prior to that I lived in other suburbs of Wyndham and have pretty much grown up in the area.

I’m a member of Werribee Lions Club and a couple of years ago I was president. I enjoy being a part of Lions because I get to meet di erent people and nd it rewarding to help others less fortunate.

e most recent projects we’ve been involved in include building a pergola for a Hoppers Crossing mother of two who lost her husband. Someofthemembers, includingmyself, helped build it.

We also assisted a deaf lady in Werribee by donating money towards a ‘hearing dog’, which is specially trained to hear noises around the house. A er the dog spent a year in training, Lions Club members took it around to the woman’s house to practise in its new environment.

Last year, Werribee Lions donated money for an eco-cubby house for Warringa Park School in Hoppers Crossing. e kids there helped to design it and then an architect brought that design to life.

WhatdoyoulikeaboutWyndham?

Having lived here for so long I have lots of family and friends in the area and am looking forward to having a child with my wife this year. Werribee has a lot to o er. We’re lucky to live so close to the city and can easily go to places like Geelong or Torquay for day trips.

WhatwouldyouliketochangeinWyndham? Tra c is a big issue. Travelling from one place to another is taking longer and longer. I’d like to see more people getting involved with

community

What do you remember being in the area that no longer is?

Looking out and seeing green paddocks. Now housing is spreading further out. ere are lots more people.

What’s your favourite eatery?

Park Hotel and Ra aels. I don’t have a favourite dish at either as I o en try something di erent.

How do you like to spend your downtime? I do jiu jitsu training in Hoppers Crossing and enjoy walking the tracks beside the Werribee River because it’s peaceful. I also enjoy spending time at Werribee South and going to Wyndham Cache for cake and co ee at weekends.

Every October the Lions have a charity golf day at Werribee Park and I think this area near the K Road Cli s is the best real estate in the west. I’ve never played golf, but I thoroughly enjoy the views.

Let kids thrive

Centre-based long day care is the most popular type of formal childcare used in Australia.

Going into a structured, child-friendly environment with quali ed staff, children from as young as six weeks can thrive in the right childcare centre.

When choosing a childcare centre for your family, think about:

• Location. Does the childcare centre need to be close to home, work or another carer?

• Cost. What are the fees charged and what do they cover?

Email: info@shawnsswimschool.com.au

Selecting a centre that will best t into a family’s routine is one of the most important things to consider.

Catharine, mother of Francesca, says her childcare centre always tries to maintain the parenting practices of the family, whether they be concerned with routines, rules, language, food preferences or issues of cultural diversity.

“Francesca loves going to childcare,” Catharine says. “It took her a couple of weeks to adjust to the new routine, but by four to six weeks she had settled in and she clearly loves it. Some mornings I’m lucky if she stops to wave me off!”

Centres provide regular full-time or part-time care in places specially built or adapted for childcare and can be located in either their own grounds, attached to schools or in shopping centres and of ce blocks.

• Availability. How far ahead do I need to book? Are places available on the days and times required?

• Staff. What qualifications do staff members have?

Waiting list’s for popular centres are very long, so register before care is needed and try to have a few options rather than rely on just one centre. Jackie, mother of Paris and Mia, recommends that parents take their child with them to a centre for a visit.

“Observe how the staff react to your child, not necessarily how they react to you,” she says. “Ask to stay for a little while and let your child wander and play with the other children.”

Home grown care

Thousands of Australian families are taking the opportunity to teach their children in a home environment for the crucial early years of their development.

Family Day Care is an approved form of childcare that’s provided in the family day care educator’s own home.

Across Australia, Family Day Care has operated for more 35 years. More than 125,000 children are enrolled and it has more than 18,000 family day care educators.

AllFamilyDayCareeducatorsareearlychildhood education professionals who are registered with a service that’s responsible for approving, supporting, training and advising them.

The services operate under the same national quality framework as other forms of childcare, incorporating national regulations, quality and quali cation standards, educational frameworks and an assessment and ratings process.

Educators work with small groups of no more than four children under school age.

The home-based setting provides a familiar, safe and secure learning environment.

Family Day Care’s small-group environment facilitates strong bonds and promotes effective early learning and social development.

Care can be offered during standard hours, evenings, before or after school, during school holidays and, in some cases, overnight and at weekends.

One of the advantages of this type of childcare is that siblings can be cared for together in one location. Family Day Care provides experiences that re ect the diversity of your community.

Co-ordination unit staff are the initial contact point for advice and information about Family DayCare.Theyworktomatchthechildcareneeds of the family with the best care environment, taking account of diversity of language and culture to ensure the right t between children, educators and families.

Families usually have the opportunity to meet with a number of educators in selecting the service that best meets their needs. The coordination unit may also offer relief care if your usual educator is unwell or plans to take leave.

WILLIAMS LANDING 7 Lukis Avenue, 3027

Raine & Horne Point Cook: 8353 8980 Price: $565,000 – $585,000 Private sale

With a striking façade constructed of brick, render and timber nishes, this contemporary three-bedroom residence is close to the new Williams Landing shopping centre (opening in December). In a quiet spot, the property is geared around family-friendly living, with an open-plan layout including a large lounge room, dining and family areas positioned around a well-equipped kitchen in crisp, white tones with stainless-steel appliances, Caesarstone benchtops, glass splashbacks, large pantry and ample bench space. The main bedroom is lovely, with a retreat, bay window, walk-in wardrobe and en suite. The remaining two bedrooms share a bathroom. There’s also a study, or potential fourth bedroom. There is a paved area under a pergola in the backyard, a raised garden bed with vegies, plus space for kids’ play equipment. High ceilings, oorboards, ceiling fans, CCTV security system and solar power are notable inclusions.

323

WERRIBEE 39 Swan Street, 3030

Harcourts Wyndham City: 9741 9000 Price (by negotiation): $299,000 Private sale

On about 662 square metres, this neat and tidy brick-veneer property requires a little TLC to upgrade it to its former glory, but with a little attention, it’s sure to impress rst-home buyers and investors alike. With a bungalow adding the additional fth bedroom, this residence has four bedrooms with built-in wardrobes, two spacious separate living and meals areas with ceiling fans, and a cosy timber kitchen. There is a lovely pergola in the backyard, surrounded by low-maintenance gardens with ample space for kids and pets to run wild while parents enjoy a cuppa in the afternoon sun. The residence is structurally sound and set on a slab. Further perks include ducted heating, air-conditioning, carport and side access. The property is within walking distance of shops, transport, schools and parks.

On the ever-popular south side of town, within a walk of the city centre, bus stops and Werribee High School – and a short summertime drive from the beach at Werribee South – this house of the 70s has been rendered to give it a newer look. But what has been kept is a set of double doors glazed with amber bottle glass, an icon of the era that could kick off a trendy retro approach for new owners’ interior design plans.

Another head start for a snazzy interior are the oorboards that, with the exception of laundry and bathroom, anchor every room. One way or another, this is a place that will appeal to rst-home buyers or

young couples, not just for its affordability but also its potential for personal expression. Its longevity proves it has good bones and the large block of about 700 square metres has backyard space in which all sorts of dreams could be realised.

Beyond a tiled side verandah, a wide entry hallway has the lounge room to the right (entered via those aforementioned doors) and this has archway entry to the dining space where there’s a gas wall heater and split-system.

The next door kitchen has timber cupboards, a pantry and Emilia stainless-steel underbench oven and gas cooktop under a rangehood. A sliding door

then opens to the laundry. To the left of entry is the rst of three bedrooms, two of which have built-in wardrobes.

The bathroom, with large mosaic tiles in brown and cream, is close by, as is the separate toilet. Vertical blinds are at all windows and the wall colour is off-white.

As mentioned, the backyard is a big, grassy area with the occasional shrub and there’s a large shed. Green thumbs will have a ball and imagination can take ight. A gate at the end of the carport allows backyard access.

When it comes to a quality large family abode with all the mod-cons, the double-storey Newport 361 design –priced from $224,900 – is hard to beat, says sales consultant from Parks Edge estate, Paul Scott.

“The Newport 361 [part of the Bridgewater range] offers an incredible ve bedrooms and a study,” Scott says. “At 36.12 squares, its ef cient design means it ts comfortably on a popular-sized block of 14x28 metres.”

A rendered portico frames the grand proportions of the house and the facade is further enhanced with a combination of horizontal and elongated vertical windows.

Downstairs encompasses versatile living spaces, including a lounge room at the front, a theatre room and an open-plan kitchen-meals area. Also at ground level are a laundry and a powder room – and storage will never be a problem with a walk-in linen closet, a second closet and

a separate broom cupboard. Five upstairs bedrooms wrap around a living area, perfect for families with young children or teens. The main bedroom has a big walk-in wardrobe and an en suite, and a study could be converted to a sixth bedroom. Alternatively, buyers can opt for a four-bedroom design with walk-in robes in each.

Centrals dig deep in bid for perfection

Werribee Centrals are 60 minutes away from consecutive perfect seasons in GDFL A-grade netball.

In 2013, Lina Iuta’s rst year as coach, the Centurions went undefeated on their way to the premiership.

Twelve months later, Iuta’s impeccable coachingrecordisonthelineastheCenturions bid for a remarkable second unbeaten season in this weekend’s grand nal against Bell Post Hill.

Iuta said her side had maintained the momentum built during last season’s run.

“ e benchmark was set from last year,” she said. “Winning the grand nal undefeated in 2013 kind of carried us in good stead for 2014. It was a matter of keeping on keeping on.”

e Centurions are taking nothing for granted, with their week one nals victory over Bell Post Hill serving as a reminder of the challenge ahead.

In that match, the Centurions found themselves in an unfamiliar position, down by ve goals at quarter-time and even as much as seven at one point.

ey showed their class and character to get

back into the game and register a nine-goal win.

Iuta believes it was a ne thing for her side to “problem solve” and grind out a win.

“It was nerves; a lot of the girls said they were nervous,” she said. “It was good for us to experience.”

Iuta used nine players in that come-frombehind win.

She believes the depth in her squad is one of its major strengths and plans on utilising it to the maximum in the season decider.

“I call our bench players our impact players,” she said. “I have the versatility of changing it up when I need to, knowing they will go on to make an impact on court.”

e Centurions have strength in all sections of the court.

AmandaWilson,NoniMcClureandMelissa Jeka have formed a water-tight defence all season.

Nicole Stewart and Amy Giaini have been hard to curtail in mid-court, while Ellie Tubbs could well be the X-factor in the season’s nal game.

Tubbs shot an incredible 749 goals during

theseasonandwillhaveatargetonherbackfor the opposition.

Iuta is con dent her star goaler can again get the job done. “Ellie’s come a long way and she’s been quite a strong player. But I need her to be stronger than strong. She will deliver.”

e Centurions will have four teams in grand nals at St Albans Reserve in Geelong on Saturday.

Centrals grand nal xtures

A-grade: Werribee Centrals v Bell Post Hill (2.30pm)

C-grade: Werribee Centrals v Thomson (12.30pm)

D-grade: Werribee Centrals v East Geelong (11.30am)

15 and under: Werribee Centrals v Inverleigh (9.30am)

All games to be played at St Albans Reserve in Geelong on Saturday.

Hornets hunt top spot

Truganina has everything to play for in the remaining two rounds of the Football Federation Victoria men’s State League 5 west season.

e ecstasy of a championship, the thrill of promotion or another dreaded winter in the state league cellar are all possible outcomes for the Hornets.

How the cards fall for the third-year club will be determined over the nal two match days.

“We’re treating it like we’ve got two nals to play,” Hornets president Sergio Lunedei said. Truganina can take care of part one and seal promotion with a win over third-placed Spring Hills on the road on Saturday.

A loss, however, and the waters get a whole lot murkier, with the Hornets needing to beat Lara in the nal round and hope another result goes their way.

However, the Hornets are not short of con dence and remain focused on not only gaining promotion but tasting ultimate glory.

“If we win, we’ll be promoted and it will be historic for the club,” Lunedei said.

“We don’t want to drop points at all in our last two games. We want to win the league.”

Lunedei said Saturday’s trip to Spring Hills held “no fears” for his team.

e Hornets beat the Caroline Springs club last time they met but lost the initial meeting at Springside Recreation Reserve early in the season.

Lunedei is just hopeful his young side isn’t overawed by the occasion, as it will be the rst such experience in the club’s short history.

“First of all, we have to be patient and not get consumed by the pressure,” Lunedei said.

“It’s an important match and if you get scared of the pressure you can choke.”

Lunedei praised senior coach Achille Mellini for keeping his side focused.

It can be a tough job for a coach at the bottom of the state leagues, having to deal with clubs higher up the division poaching their players.

e Hornets lost leading goalscorer Jordan Borg to Werribee City, but Mellini has found a way to the back of the net through the three-pronged attack of Adam Santic, Chris Scavo and Musa Kamara.

Arthur Chelidonis, elevated from the reserves last week, scored two goals on debut and could have a big role to play over the

■ Winning a grand nal is a feeling like nothing else. It may not be the best feeling in your life, but it is unique and hard to describe in the moment. Time makes it easier to articulate, but that rush when the nal siren goes is a moment suspended in time. Footballers today are lucky that every phone is a camera and those moments are captured to keep and cherish. I am sure blokes like Barry Priest, Alan Clough and Spud Murphy would love to have footage of their games to look back on. I was not a fan of the decision to split the WRFL competition into three divisions midway through this year. Initially, I thought it rewarded mediocrity. After seeing the impact it has had on clubs such as Laverton, Albanvale and Braybrook, I have changed my mind. Those clubs were on Desolation Boulevard, but the division 3 nals series has revived them and given them a good platform for 2015. Congratulations to Michael Shepperbottom and everyone at Braybrook. A premiership is a premiership.

■ After going close several times in the past ve years, Parkside has won a ag, taking the WRFL division 2 title over West Footscray. Parkside, a foundation club, elded two sides in its rst year. Senior coach Nathan Juegan is a meticulous planner and thoroughly deserves the ag. In last year’s grand nal he ruptured his achilles while playing, and it’s been a tough year for him. I have no idea whether the club has plans to contest division 1 next year. And I don’t know if Yarraville Seddon Eagles is going down. There was a time when this was an automatic occurrence, but it’s no longer the case.

■ The season is over for the Werribee Football Club after a heartbreaking loss to Williamstown on Sunday. The Tigers were ve goals up at three-quarter time but lost by 26 points. Senior coach John Lamont has done well in his rst year, but he will be disappointed by that loss after such a gutsy display in the rst three quarters. From here, Williamstown will play Box Hill Hawks and Footscray will take on Port Melbourne. As a western suburbs boy I hope the VFL Cup comes to this side of the Westgate. With Werribee, I think a Footscray win would be fantastic.

Medallist hangs up boots at the top of his game

Parkside veteran Adrian Gervasi clocked o from his glorious football career with a pair of important medallions dangling around his neck.

Gervasi claimed the Rex Swann Medal for best-a eld in the Western Region Football League division 2 grand nal before collecting his premiership medal.

e 30-year-old then con rmed his retirement.

He said he could think of no better way to nish his playing career.

e win also went some way to soothing the heartache of two losing grand nals in which he participated.

“A er the last two years, this is just unbelievable,” Gervasi said. “I didn’t think it could be this good. It’s the best feeling in the world, can’t get any better.

“I’m retired, that’s it, I’m hanging my boots up – I’ve got nothing le to give.”

GervasispentthepastthreeyearsatParkside a er a long career in the Essendon District Football League.

He played at Doutta Stars, Maribyrnong Park and Avondale Heights but it seems it is histimeasaParksiderhewillcherishthemost.

“I had a few mates come to Parkside and it’s the best decision I’ve made to come here,” he said.

Gervasi has predominantly worked as a defender this season, but in the grand nal found himself having an impact further up the ground.

Coach Nathan Juegan was thrilled with his versatility in the biggest game of the year.

“I’ve been using him down back all year and last year I used him up forward,” he said.

“He was awesome.”

Gervasi played down his impact.

“It’s a team e ort and that’s what it’s been all year,” he said. “I did my part for the team and that’s it.”

Magpies romp to a ag

e football Gods have nally shown mercy on Parkside and its persistent coach, Nathan Juegan.

e Magpies put four grand nal losses in ve years behind them to claim the Western Region Football League division 2 ag on Sunday.

e black-and-white streamers were being tied to the premiership cup long before the nal siren as the Magpies romped to a 38-point win over neighbourhood rivals West Footscray Roosters at Chirnside Park in Werribee.

e margin somewhat attered the Roosters, who were second best for all bar 20 minutes of a one-sided contest.

Juegan had spent more than a decade at Parkside and not won a premiership before Sunday. Nor did he salute at any stage earlier of his senior football career.

“I’dbeenplayingfootyfor26yearsandnever won one,” he said. “ is place has been pretty cruel to me – I’ve lost six grand nals and nally got one in the seventh.

“Words can’t explain how I feel. It hasn’t sunkin,butwhenitdoes,I’llcertainlyenjoyit.”

Parkside raced to a 47-point lead before West Footscray got its rst major on the board.

But the Magpies had some cause for concern when they were two rotations down and the Roosters made a serious push in the second term.

e Roosters nished the half with four

consecutive goals and booted the rst of the third term to trim to margin back to three goals.

MostwouldhaveexpectedtheMagpiestoget the wobbles, but their leaders stood up.

Matthew Pearce took control of the game through his calmness under pressure.

Mo Khartabil was a man on a mission, o ering up multiple leads.

e power forward nished with two goals, but also kicked six behinds, robbing him of any chance of saluting for the Rex Swann Medal.

It was an emotional day for the man Parkside fans a ectionately know as “Big Mo”.

“He had a personal loss six weeks ago where he lost his father and that really hurt him,” Juegan said.

“But the way he has responded has been huge and the boys rallied around him.

“For a big fella, he provided a lot of pressure at ground level and his second and third e orts were enormous. He’s a grouse character. I love the bloke, he’s been so loyal to our footy club.”

e Swann Medal went to Adrian Gervasi and no one could dispute the umpires’ assessment. It was a fairytale nish to a great career for Gervasi.

Dyson Stevens was the Magpies main link across half-forward. At the other end, Aaron McHutchinson barely put a foot wrong.

For the Magpies to stave o a charging Roosters with a depleted bench was always goingtotakemorethanjusttheaforementioned individuals to get the job done.

Premiership hero praises club culture

Once a Parksider, always a Parksider. It’s a motto that all Parkside footballers swear by.

Matthew Pearce, one of the standouts for the Magpies in Sunday’s division 2 grand nal win over West Footscray, got his rst taste of life at the club in 2006. He was instantly hooked.

“Once you play that one game for Parkside, you become part of that brotherhood,” he said.

Pearce returned to the club two years ago with a view to helping the Magpies get their hands on the holy grail.

Even a er playing at higher levels, including the VFL, he was forced to buy into the Magpies’ culture or be on his way. e set of values is what attracted him to the club.

“We’ve had a lot of new guys come into the club this year from higher levels –whether it be division 1, EDFL, WRFL or the country. We bring them in and the culture is already set at the footy club, they don’t dictate the culture.

“It’s a culture that’s passed on and passed on and it’s something that you really want to be a part of.’’

Pearce was one of the key drivers of that sel ess culture in Sunday’s grand nal. He was the main set-up man for the Magpies, with a handful of score assists. Even with the Magpies a long way up in the fourth quarter, Pearce resisted the temptation to shoot on goal from 45 metresoutwhenhesawhiscaptainChris Muratore in a better position and closer to goal.

Most would have chased the glory. But not Pearce, who got his glorious moment when the nal siren sounded.

Magpies silence Roosters

Parkside beat West Footscray in the Western Region Football League’s division 2 grand nal at Avalon Airport Oval on Sunday. How did they do it? Lance Jenkinson explains …

Firstquarter

West Footscray burst from the blocks to have thebetteroftheopening veminutesbutmade very little impression on the scoreboard.

And once Parkside settled into their groove, getting rst hand on the ball at the bounces through ruckman Alex Lochart, there would be no stopping the favourites.

ey piled on ve consecutive goals, two through Michael Licciardo, including the rst of the game, and one each to captain Chris Muratore, forward Mo Khartabil and half forward Dyson Stevens.

Licciardowasastandoutinthe rstterm, not only winning his share of ball in the middle, but following up to provide an extra target in attack.

Stevens’ impact was marked across half forward, with the Roosters’ defenders barely able to lay a hand on him, while Matthew Pearce was like a quarterback with his silky skills nding players in better positions, including assisting on the rst two goals.

West Footscray’s game broke down when it started to play the man and not the ball.

Jamie Lane got the Roosters’ lone score in the rst term, a behind a er taking a beautiful mark 20m out, opting to play on and slamming the ball into the post.

Quarter-time: Parkside 5.5 (35) West Footscray0.1(1).

Secondquarter Parksidebootedthe rsttwogoalsofthesecond term through Brent Kelly and Nick Grigg and it might have been a case of ‘here we go again’.

e lead had blown out to a massive 47 points before West Footscray icked the switch to go, starting to earn their share of clearances, getting more numbers around the ball and just showingawholelotmoreintenta eraninsipid rst term.

Jadyn Trowsdale was the spark plug in the Roosters’ mid eld, while Tobi Bray, Kane Liossis and Mark Speakman began to impose their will on the contest.

Munir El Houli had a purple patch for the Roosters to provide a much-needed target.

He got on the highlights reel with a strong pack mark but, more importantly, his snap made it two goals in a row for the Roosters a er Adem Yze had broken the West Footscray drought at the 12-minute mark of the quarter.

Goals through Damien Yze and Mick Lindsay, and the prospect of Parkside having two less rotations due to a growing injury toll, and all of a sudden the Roosters were back in the game at half-time.

Half-time: Parkside 7.9 (51) West Footscray 4.3(27).

irdquarter

It took West Footscray just 20 seconds to signal their intent in the third quarter, Trowsdale charging out of the centre square and Lindsay snaring a crumbing goal to trim the margin to three goals.

e Roosters had all of the momentum until Kelly snapped a run of ve goals, which was brought about by West Footscray’s inability to keep the ball inside their own attacking 50. at was the turning point in the game as it started a three-goal march for the Magpies. Pearce’s run and carry and impeccable ball use was coming to the fore, while Guy Barbuto was a ball magnet across half back, constantly repelling.

Fast- nishing Bombers storm to rst title in 15 years

Braybrook is the Western Region Football League’s rst division 3 premier a er beating Albanvale by two points in a thrilling grand nal on Saturday.

It was far from smooth sailing for the Bombers, who gave up a lead of three points at half-time and ve at three-quarter time to hand the ascendancy to the Cobras.

But the Bombers saved their best for last and stormed home in the nal term to win 12.15 (87) to 12.13 (85).

It was Braybrook’s rst premiership since 1999 when it beat Central Altona in the division 2 grand nal.

Albanvale coach John rush said his players had le everything on the ground.

“I was really proud of the boys,” he said. “We had the momentum for probably the rst ve to 10 minutes of the game and we kicked four straight.

“To their credit they fought back. We held them o until 10 minutes to go before they got a couple in front. We kept ghting and nearly pinched it at the end but just couldn’t get there.”

Despite the result not falling their team’s way, Cobras duo Sean Blake and Justin Henderson were outstanding.

e pair combined for ve goals and won a number of important contests to keep their side in the game.

“I thought Sean and Justin both played great games,” rush said.

“I was really happy with the e ort from all the boys. At the end of the day the guys had a crack and that’s all I can ask.”

For Braybrook, Peter Krueger and Frank Hoang were among the Bombers’ best.

In what was his rst year in charge at Albanvale, rush and co-coach Adam Borg took the Cobras to their rst grand nal appearance since 2011.

rush said there were a lot of positive signs for the club.

“If you’d told me at the start of the season we’d play in the grand nal and lose by two points, I probably would’ve taken the grand nal without the losing bit,” he said.

“Hopefully, it gives us a chance to get some players here and we don’t lose too many.”

In other division 3 grand nal results, Sanctuary Lakes won its rst-ever reserves premiership, edging out Braybrook 11.20 (86) to 6.12 (48).

Big plans for Storm kids

Manor Lakes Cricket Club is taking its junior coaching structure to a higher level.

eStormhasenlistedSCCricketCoaching, a company run by Footscray Edgewater premiership guru Steve Chapman, to instruct and accredit its coaches.

With the club in just its second year, Storm president Chris Riley says it’s important that the coaches instil good habits in the players.

“We’ve hired a professional coaching company to come in and teach our coaches properly,” he said.

“We’re trying to establish a professional coaching element to it all and we’re investing a lot of money.

“It’s all about the culture of the club and setting the right standards, from mateship through to the spirit of cricket.

“I think it’s quite unique – not a lot of clubs have taken this approach.

“We’re trying to do it from a start-up level and get those professional structures in place.”

e Storm had four junior teams in its inaugural Western Region Junior Cricket Association season and will be aiming for at least six this season.

e club has sides in all senior grades in the Western Suburbs United Churches Cricket Association.

To achieve that, it must boast a strong junior structure and that starts with good coaching.

e Storm wants to tap into the sports talent at nearby Manor Lakes College by o ering something that some other local clubs can’t.

e ultimate aim is to establish a Manor Lakes cricket academy to create a bridge between junior and senior cricket.

An important piece in the jigsaw for the Storm has been the arrival of head coach Jason Bell.

Bell will take a holistic approach to coaching and create a pathway for a seamless transition between juniors and seniors.

“He’s got a pretty big role to ful l in terms of structuring up the whole cricket program,” Riley said.

“We’re building skills for kids to take the next progression … having that link between juniors and seniors is important.

“We’re expecting him to do a lot in that area.”

e Storm has appointed Adam Masterson to the role of rst XI captain, with Adam Haler and Kevin Williams part of the leadership group.

Jets gure in medal count

Western Jets wingman Brayden Monk has nished third in the TAC Cup’s Morrish Medal best and fairest count. Gippsland Power’s Alex Carr won with 17 votes, followed by Oakleigh Chargers’ Toby McLean (15) and Monk (12).

Another Jet, Jackson Volpato, led the count for much of the night, but came to a halt on 11 votes. Neither Monk nor Volpato made the TAC Cup team of the year, with those honours going to Jayden Laverde, Liam Duggan and Corey Ellis. Jets graduate and Altona Vikings premiership star Travis Lunardi is one of the housemates on Channel 9 reality show Big Brother this season.

Graduating on the G

Kayne Turner is the envy of his Maribyrnong College classmates.

e 18-year-old, who is aligned to the Werribee Tigers, arrived for his year 12 studies on Monday morning with one hell of a tale to tell his friends.

e talented teenager got to live out a boyhood dream, breaking through the banner at the MCG to play in front of a crowd of almost 80,000 in North Melbourne’s stunning come-from-behind AFL elimination nal win over Essendon on Saturday night.

“It was unreal,” Turner said moments a er the nal siren.

“You’ve de nitely got to pinch yourself to get your feeling back. Out there on the ground was a great feeling.”

Turner was dra ed by North Melbourne with its last selection in the 2013 AFL rookie dra . It was your classic le - eld selection –a player from the bush weighing 67 kilograms wringing wet.

Turner o ered some insight into his qualities, having already matched it with the senior footballers in the Ovens and Murray league before impressing with the Murray Bushrangers in the TAC Cup.

Now it seems that playing against more experienced and physically stronger players on the hallowed grounds of the AFL is water o a duck’s back for Turner.

“It’s been well documented that he’s at school, but [playing in front of] 80,000 at the MCG, running around next to Paul Chapman, it doesn’t worry him, it doesn’t faze him one bit,” North Melbourne coach Brad Scott said.

“ at’s what you look for as coach – players who will step up in big moments in big games.”

Turner’s aggression on the eld belies his slight stature. His run-down tackles are sure to be a source of continued embarrassment to lackadaisical forwards.

He’s not just making up the numbers on the Roos forward line, he’s making a di erence –beitpresentingontheleadacrosshalf-forward, linking up to provide an option for teammates or applying forward pressure.

Turnercansni outagoal, too, havingkicked seven majors in his rst four AFL games.

“Brad doesn’t stress about possessions or anything like that; he just wants us to make sure we do what we need to do as forwards, coming up and ensuring they don’t get [the ball] out of our forward line,” Turner said.

He impressed from the day he pulled on the guernsey of the Kangaroos’ VFL a liate Werribee Tigers, producing an eye-catching performance on a scorching hot day in a VFL practice match against Williamstown.

Tigers coach John Lamont liked what he saw from the rookie that day, handing him a senior debut in round one of the home-and-away season. e youngster hasn’t looked back.

He is being taught the right way by North Melbourne’s development sta and the

Werribee coaches in his rst season in the big league.

“I owe a fair bit of my development to Jarred Moore, Ben Dyer and Gavin Brown; they’ve beengreatallyearwithallofusyoungerblokes, they really look a er us.

“JL [Lamont] has great football knowledge and is really good to have down at Werribee.”

Turner relishes the chance to learn the trade alongside AFL star Drew Petrie. He was taking note of how Petrie operated in the forward line in the big win over Essendon.

“When he takes big marks and kicks goals like he does, he’s one of the best forwards in the competition,” Turner said.

“You also get to see a lot of the other work that Drewie does. His work rate defensively is brilliant, too. He’s always up and on his opponent and doesn’t let him get past.

‘‘He’s great to have out there, a great voice, great direction and a great leader.”

Next up for Turner is a prime time Friday night meeting with Geelong under lights at the MCG.

Sharks’ rapid progress to rst ag

Sanctuary Lakes will need to shop for a trophy cabinet a er securing its rst premiership in Western Region Football League senior ranks in just its second season.

e Sharks won in a canter by 38 points over foundation club Braybrook in the division 3 reserves grand nal at Hogans Road Reserve on Saturday.

Sharks onballer Michael Seex told Star Weekly the breakthrough triumph would providealaunchingpadtoabrightfuture for the club.

“It would’ve been great for the senior boys to get up, but at the end of the day a ag in the rst two years for the club is obviouslyagoodsteppingstone,”hesaid. eSharkswereincontrolofthegrand nal from the outset.

Only errant kicking – they turned only 11 of 31 shots into goals – kept the Bombers in the hunt at half-time.

Seex received the medal for being best-on-ground, but he said the honour could easily have gone to other key contributors including captain Tom Krpan, Tristan Pearce or Shaun Leith. e Sharks had eight individual goalkickers. Chris Neville, Jayden Tandy and Alex Nicolovski kicked two apiece. Centre-half forward John Cott, key defender Greg Cotter and rover Grant Jones have been outstanding all season. Seex said the team had worked hard under coach Matthew Stoodley to become the inaugural champions in the newly formed division.

“ e running that the boys did preseason has really paid o today,” Seex said. “ ey just couldn’t keep up with us. You train and play all year for this, so it’s just a relief that it’s over and you come away with a win.”

Meanwhile, Wyndhamvale has broken its premiership drought in the senior section. e Falcons claimed their rst title in the division 2 reserves on Sunday to end a cup-less run that has endured since they entered the league in 1989. e Mark Elso-coached team won by eight points over Parkside in a low-scoring struggle at Chirnside Park. Steven Soto, James Tessari and Matt Malual were best for the Falcons. In under-18 division 2, Werribee Districts won the ag with a ve-goal victory over minor premier Newport Power. Tim Whiting, Joseph Di Natale and four-goal forward Daniel Kerruish were superb for the triumphant Tigers.

Ask the Coach

The loss to Williamstown was gut wrenching. How are you feeling?

Better than I thought to be honest. I think my little 2 year old girl Sophie helped me with my perspective to an extent. She was grinning and having a great day at the footy when I saw her after the game. But firstly I am extremely disappointed with how we started the game, we were on the back-foot and didn’t take any initiative, which forced us to claw our way back into the game, which we did. But how we finished off in the 4th quarter was bordering on embarrassing.

What did you say to the players?

That we all need to reflect on the game and work out what we did well, and importantly analyse where things went wrong. I said that it will probably take a while to sink in, but they will look back at the way 2014 finished, and it will always be a case of wasted opportunity. They need to handle the situation with maturity and come back improved.

What is your reflections on the season?

Overall a positive result, with a 10-8 record in the home and away season, and winning a final, plus our Development Team winning enough games to participate in a finals series. We had a lot of players debut for the club, and we have the beginning of a strong group of players coming through

When do you start 2015?

We will kick-off the Morris-Barlow squad in the next few weeks, for local hopefuls who want to have a crack at VFL football. Those boys need to contact our Football Operations Manager Stu Balloch and get the details. Pre season proper will start late October\ early November. I will look at the program and make a few changes to what we did last year, all looking at getting an improved result.

On behalf of the coaches and players I want to thank all the people who have contributed to getting our two teams on the training track all year, and everyone who does a job on match day. Thanks also to the supporters and sponsors. You can “Ask the Coach.”

Timid term costs Tigers

is wasn’t the one that got away; it was the one that was thrown away by the Werribee Tigers.

A Tigers victory seemed a fait accompli at three-quartertimeofSunday’scut-throatVFL semi- nal against Williamstown at North Port Oval – until the Seagulls produced a Houdini-like escape to win by 26 points with a scintillating nine-goals-to-nil nal term.

e Tigers had turned a 22-point de cit midway through the rst quarter into a 32-point advantage at the end of the third because of their willingness to take risks.

ere was no reason for changing what had got them into a position of power.

At full steam, the Tigers are hard to stop, but they are prone to at spots within games, a factthatworriedTigerscoachJohnLamonton occasions during the home-and-away rounds.

e Tigers chose the wrong time to go into their shell, falling away in the last 30 minutes.

e Seagulls sensed a swing in momentum sparked by an incredible last quarter from Kane Lambert.

Lamont must have felt sick in the stomach watching on almost powerless as the Gulls piled on goal a er goal, eroding what most felt to be an unassailable lead and having salt rubbed into their wounds in time-on.

You could look at the last quarter as the death knell for the Tigers, but it was much earlier in the game when they failed to slam the door shut on the Seagulls.

Asidefromconcedingtheopeningtwogoals of the game, the Tigers were the dominant side for two and a half of the opening three quarters.

Ruckman Daniel Currie was the dominant bigmanagainstanunder-sizedWilliamstown missing Nick Meese.

Jye Bolton, Ben Speight and Scott Sherlock gave the Tigers plenty of drive from the stoppages, while Jesse Crichton and Nathan Laracy were all over their opponents on the half-back line.

Brody Mihocek produced arguably his best game for the club in the heart of the defence.

Mihocek shut Ryan Ferguson out of the game for the rst three quarters. His ability to judge the ball in the air to either out-mark the Seagulls forwards or get a clearing st was a feature.

For all of the positives, there were sore points for the Tigers during the second and third quarters.

Firstly, they failed to make their inside 50 penetration count where it hurts most – on the scoreboard.

Secondly, their discipline sometimes let them down.

Jake Wilson’s behind-the-play hold on Gulls forward Scott Clouston resulted in a goal. Crichton then drove Clouston’s head into the ground a er a great tackle to give

him a free shot on goal when it otherwise would have been a boundary throw in, and Scott McMahon had a brain fade when he overstepped the goal square from a kick out.

ere were a number of culprits who missed elementary goals from close in, be it at the set shot or in a pack situation.

It was small moments such as these that added up to a big problem for the Tigers.

e Tigers will be dirty for bowing out of the nals race on Sunday.

ere have been many examples of this young Tigers’ side being able to match it with every team in the competition, but they will need to discover more consistency from quarter to quarter to avoid this kind of heartbreaking exit next campaign.

Smart economy on wheels

While it never enjoyed the popularity of the Jazz hatchback, the Honda City sedan has blossomed into a decent and competitively pricedcar, witharoomyinteriorandcavernous boot space providing an excellent compromise between practicality and economy. It’s also a nice-looking car and pretty cheerful to drive.

e 2014 Honda City 1.5-litre, four-cylinder enginecoupleswellwiththeconstantlyvariable automatic transmission to provide a smooth and reasonably responsive ride. It does lack some oomph, but the trade-o is excellent fuel e ciency of just 5.1 litres per 100 kilometres combined driving (city and country). is is further improved with an eco-option for city driving. ere isn’t a noticeable di erence in performance, but blue neon-looking lights around the gauges turn green when you’re driving e ciently to provide a feel good factor.

e VTi-L’s dashboard is very modernlooking with a tacho and speedo being the only analogue gauges. ese are accompanied by an LCD display with the usual trip computer information such as mileage, fuel gauge, fuel consumption and range to empty.

In the centre of the dash is a 7-inch glass touch screen, which looks big in this car. is is one of the better systems though, like many

cars, you need an Apple device to use it to its fullest. ere’s no in-built sat nav, but you can download a Honda navigation app in your iPhone which displays on the screen when connected via a HDMI cable.

e touch screen is clear and allows for swiping movements, though I found it was easier to use audio and phone buttons on the steering wheel while driving.

e reverse camera display is a highlight.

e picture is really clear, with guidelines that predict your path to assist you when reverseparking or turning out of tight spots.

Other driving aids include hill-start assist and speed alarm, and there’s a host of safety features, including six airbags and whiplash absorbers in the front headrests.

With the base model City VTi starting at $17,990, this should prove popular in the small-sedan category, though it remains to be seen if it will give the Jazz a run for its money.

Camry stands the test of time

e Toyota Camry four-cylinder and Toyota Aurion six-cylinder are currently being built by Toyota in Melbourne, though they will be imported from 2017 onwards.

e existing models have many changes from the original Japanese design to suit them to Australian driving conditions. So they have slightly rmer suspensions and the engines are tuned to give them plenty of grunt o the line. Although slightly smaller outside than Falcon and Commodore, later-model Camrys andAurionshavealmostasmuchlegroom due to the space e ciencies of front-wheel drive. e Aurion comes only in sedan format.

ese Toyotas are pleasant to drive, with a smooth, re ned feel. Driving enthusiasts may nd the pre-September 2002 model too so for their needs; Toyota listened to comments, tightened up the suspension and steering, and the later ones are ne.

Originally, the Camry had a four-cylinder engine. V6s were added to the options line-up in1997thendiscontinuedinJuly2006withthe introduction of an all-new model. e ‘Camry V6’ was renamed the Toyota Aurion when introduced in October 2006. All Aurions have a V6 engine.

e four-cylinder Camry engine was a 2.2-litre unit until September 2002, when it was replaced by a 2.4-litre four. Not only is this engine larger but it’s also a more modern design and far better to sit behind.

A new four-cylinder engine of 2.5 litres was introduced in December 2011. e V6 3.0-litre engineusedintheToyotaCamrynotonlygives you extra power and torque but also improves
