By Laura Michell and Cameron Tait
A Wyndham councillor may be investigated over claims he has misusedhisposition.
A Wyndham resident has lodged a complaint with the Local Government Inspectorate against Cr Intaj Khan, alleging he misused his position as a councillor to promote his business interests in a council-branded advertisement.
e complaint surrounds an advertisement in the July edition of Alwasat, a western suburbs-based Arabicnewspaper.
e advertisement features a photo of Cr Khan, a Ramadan message, Wyndham council’s logo and web address, and a listing of three schools eitherownedormanagedbyCrKhan.
A similar advertisement featuring Cr Khan appeared in Alwasat’s July 2013edition.
Both advertisements appeared withoutWyndhamcouncil’sknowledge orapproval.
Cr Khan con rmed to Star Weekly hewasawareofthe2013advertisement but denied any involvement in the one that appeared in July this year. He maintains they were “free community greetings”tomarkRamadan.

Parrot and pooch nd puppy love
Is this Point Cook’s oddest couple? When eclectus parrot Noisy was brought into Point Cook’s Direct Vet Services last month as an injured hatchling, vet Karen Davies never imagined the practice’s resident bulldog, Clover, would adopt her as one of her own. Sensing eight-week-old Noisy was very ill and depressed about the abscesses that were all over her body, Clover decided to provide her with a mother’s love. Clover has tried to feed Noisy and is even known to lick her clean after she has eaten, as she would one of her own puppies. “In 23 years working as a veterinarian, I have seen some odd friendships,” Dr Davies says. “None of us expected Clover to start producing milk and lay down in front of Noisy and try to breastfeed her. Dogs have come into milk to rear other puppies, sometimes kittens, but this is the rst dog I have had that has tried to feed a baby parrot.”

Robberies, violence surging
By Cameron Tait
Robberies have soared more than 70 per cent in Wyndham, with signi cant increases in assaults and car the also driving an overall 7 per cent leap in the crime level.
According to the latest Victoria Police statistics, non-residential burglaries are up but residential burglaries are down, as are drug o ences, the s from motor vehicles and property damage. erewere111robberiesrecordedin2013-14, compared with 65 in 2012-13.
Rapedroppedby16.6percent,but therewere 1345 assaults in Wyndham in the 12 months to July – an average of almost four a day and an increase of 8.8 per cent on the 2012-13 gures. While the number of non-residential burglaries leapt 49.2 per cent, an average of almost 10 cars were stolen every week in Wyndham, pushing car the up 9.8 per cent. ere was a spike of more than 36 per cent in the s, including shop stealing, petrol the and the of personal property.
Residential burglaries fell 24.4 per cent, while drug o ences dropped 16.6 per cent, the s
from motor vehicles dipped 5.6 per cent and property damage dropped 5.4 per cent.
Wyndham’s Inspector Damien Christensen said family violence continued to be a major contributor to the city’s high number of assaults.
“ e emotional and nancial impact of familyviolenceonindividuals, extendedfamily members and the community is excessive,” he said. “Wyndham doesn’t have crisis accommodation and that’s a major problem in itself, because we want people to be able to escape family violence to a safe place.”
This dad’s on top of his game
Wyndham Vale’s Adam Strathairn was last week named Victoria’s top dad.
Mr Strathairn was chosen as Victoria’s 2014 Father of the Year, beating a eld of more than 1500 contenders.
He had earlier been picked as YMCA Victoria’s Community Father of the Year, a er being nominated by his two children, 11-year-old Ava and eight-year-old Oscar. e 38-year-old full-time horticulturist balances his busy schedule with coaching several teams at Good News Basketball Club and volunteering as the club’s president, secretary and registrar.
But there’s much more to this devoted dad.
Every Sunday in the Strathairn household is family day, which involves outdoor adventures tolearnaboutplantsorhavingthegrandparents around for a family dinner.
With his passion for nature and healthy living, Mr Strathairn helped Ava and Oscar design a suburban oasis in their backyard, complete with vegie patch and chicken run.
Mr Strathairn was surprised to be named as Victoria’s top dad.
“It was overwhelming, but I’m very proud,” he said. “As a father, you want to be a positive in uence on your children. Most importantly, you want them to learn to respect themselves andothersandbewellmannered–that’soneof the best compliments you can get as a parent.”
Mr Strathairn’s wife, Simone, said any time their children needed a driver, support, advice or anything else, their dad was there.
“Heticksalltheboxes. He’slovingandcaring and wants to help our children and other kids he coaches reach their potential,” she said.
Father-in-law Greg Grundy said Mr Strathairn’s volunteering spirit and positive outlook rubbed o on his children.
“I can’t fault him; he’s everything you’d want for your daughter,” he said. “And as far as kids go, he epitomises a family man.”
Father’s Day Council of Victoria chairman Don Parsons said the award recognised the importance of fathering and family life, whatever the composition of the family.
“ e council has searched far and wide for

“A good person, good family values and a good community member.”
Since 1956, the council has named a Father

Inspector Christensen said the rise in robberies was a concern.
“Many of these robberies are occurring where demands are made for people to hand over mobile phones and are not involving weapons,” he said.
“Our focus on assaults has included reducing the number of assaults that occur on our members, at licensed venues and in places of mass gatherings such as shopping centres.
“ e rise in non-residential burglaries is a focus for our members and we are looking to address this with local businesses and schools.”
mum, your car’s gone
A speeding P-plate driver had some explaining to do when his mother’s car was impounded for a month a er he was caught travelling at more than double the speed limit in Laverton North. e 18-year-old Point Cook man was detectedat155km/hina70km/hzoneon Leakes Road at 11pm on August 14. e Mazda CX7 wagon was impounded for 30 days under Victoria’s anti-hoon legislation and the driver was charged with a number of o ences, including speeding. He is expected to face Werribee Magistrates Court.
Drivers caught doing more than 45km/h over the limit face a $738 ne, the loss of eight demerit points and a 12-month licence suspension.
Wyndham highway patrol’s Leading Senior Constable Darin Sheahan said: “It doesn’t matter whether it’s a freeway or single-lane road, when you’re travelling at excessive speed the risks are extremely high. Police and emergency services pick up the pieces. You want to put speeding drivers in our shoes and make them realise how di cult it is to knock on the door of a family member and tell them a loved one has been killed.”
As part of last month’s Operation Ouroboros, which focused on drinkdriving in Wyndham, Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong, police conducted more than 8000 roadside breath tests.
Eleven drivers were over the alcohol limit and one tested positive to drugs. e 10-day blitz detected 94 o ences. Included were 20 drivers speeding, four driving while disquali ed and four having children unrestrained in their vehicle.

A suburb ‘for families’
By Laura Michell
A new $1 billion development at Wyndham Vale is being hailed as part of a “suburb of the future” by Planning Minister Matthew Guy.
Mr Guy launched Lend Lease’s 435-hectare Harpley estate on Black Forest Road last ursday, saying it would provide houses for about 12,000 residents.
e estate will be built over the next 12 years.
As reported by Star Weekly, the development was given the green light in July a er the state government approved a $533 million developer contribution plan for Wyndham’s west.
e plan outlined contributions that will be made by Wyndham council, the government and developers to fund key infrastructure in the area.
Plans for Harpley include 4000 new houses, transport links, community facilities, more than 60 hectares of lakes and wetlands, a waterfront town centre, and three schools.
e estate will have direct access from the Princes Freeway via Armstrong Road and a bridge over the railway line, easing congestion on Cottrell Street.
“Harpley will be part of a suburb of the future that is within a commutable distance of a major employment precinct [at East Werribee],” Mr Guy said.
“ is is a place for Melbourne’s future … this is a new suburb for families.”
Wyndham mayor Bob Fairclough said the inclusion of two primary schools and a secondary school in the estate was a win for Wyndham families.
“We’re struggling as a council to keep pace with population growth in Wyndham,’’ he said. ‘‘Last week, I met with 50 school

who made it clear that education resources were struggling. We simply don’t have enough schools.”
Lend Lease state communities general manager Neil O’Connor said Harpley would have amenities to help people live a happy and healthy lifestyle.
“We’ve already partnered with … Wyndhamvale Football Club and Werribee Football Club and we’re excited to watch them grow and succeed over the next few years alongside Harpley,” he said. Stage one of the development will include the wetlands and a cultural park.
Youth jobless rate declines
Melbourne’s west has bucked the youth unemployment trend by recording a drop of almost 3 per cent.
Australia Bureau of Statistics gures show youth unemployment rates in the region, which includes the Brimbank, Melton, Wyndham, Maribyrnong and Hobsons Bay council areas, dropped from a 12-month average of 16.4 per cent in July, 2013, to 13.5 per cent this July.
However, the Brotherhood of St Lawrence said it had analysed the ABS’s Victorian gures for ages 15 to 24 and found there had been a rise in jobless youth numbers in most regions.
e organisation found the average unemployment rate in the age range in the year to July was 13.8 per cent – up from 12.3 per cent a year earlier.
Michael Wasley, general manager of jobs search company Matchworks, said it was likely youth unemployment in Wyndham had fallen as a result of population changes, with the raw numbersofyouthunemployedremaining stable.“Westillhavehighnumbersofjob seekers on our books.”
Mr Wasley said young people looking for work could boost their prospects by showing prospective employers they had good communication skills and a good work ethic. “Employers aren’t necessarily looking for someone with the quali cations to do a job but rather someone who can do what they’re asked to do.”

Alarm at surging family violence
By Laura Michell
Wyndham had more reports of family violence in the four years to 2012-13 than any other Melbourne “growth area”, according to a submission to a federal Senate inquiry into domestic violence.
e submission by Wyndham council says that between 2008-09 and 2012-13, Wyndham recorded a 169 per cent jump in reports of family violence.
Whittlesea recorded a 93 per cent increase in reports in the same period, while Hume incidents of family violence rose by 65 per
cent. Latest police statistics show that reports of family violence in Wyndham rose by 14 per cent between 2012-13 and 2013-14. Reports of family violence increased by 5 per cent in Whittlesea in the same period.
e council used its submission to the Senate inquiry to call for greater resources to tackle the problem.
“Wyndham’s population growth has meant the number of family violence incidents has grown more rapidly than in almost any other area in metropolitan Melbourne,” the submission said.

Justin Timberlake and Jamie Oliver have done it, as have Oprah, the Foo Fighters and the Essendon Football Club.
It’s the craze that has sent shivers around the world – and last week it was Werribee police’s turn to take on the ‘ALS Ice Bucket Challenge’.
As part of the event, organised by First Constable Rebecca Timothee, 23 members were dowsed by freezing buckets of water to help generate awareness for Motor Neurone Disease Australia, raising $575 for the cause.
While members of Hoppers Crossing CFA were on hand to ll the buckets, they didn’t escape being nominated for the challenge by

e challenge, which began in the US, involves icy drenchings to raise money and awareness for Lou Gehrig’s disease, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), known as motor neurone disease in Australia.
Since it started, the campaign, has gone viral, become a social media phenomenon and has helped raise millions of dollars for research.

Parents ght for drug to help son
By Laura Michell
A Tarneit family has launched a petition urging the federal government to make a new drug designed to prolong the lives of about 200 cystic brosis (CF) su erers available through the Pharmaceutical Bene ts Scheme (PBS).
Kate and Steve MacPherson’s son, Brody, was diagnosed with CF in December last year at just four weeks old.
He has a rare gene, G551D, that does not allow salt and uid to ow through his body. e result is a build-up of mucus in his lungs and digestive system.
About 8 per cent of CF patients in Australia, about 200 people, have the gene.
Kalydeco is the only drug found to improve the lung function of these patients.
While Brody is too young to take Kalydeco – it can be used from the age of six – Mrs MacPherson wants to ensure it will be readily available to him and other su erers. edrug’sinclusiononthePBSwasapproved by an advisory committee earlier this year, but its addition to the scheme has been delayed because of nancial concerns. e drug costs about $300,000 per patient per year.
“ ere’s a desperate and urgent need to have Kalydeco added to the PBS without further delay,” Mrs MacPherson said.
“We’re calling on the government to fast-track the approvals process to help all eligible patients with the G551D gene. It’s almost two years since this process started and there’s no end in sight.”
Mrs MacPherson said Kalydeco would provide a normal life to children with CF. “If we can keep Brody as healthy as possible for the next six years, there will be something to help him,” she said.

Vets give Louis a second wind
Adogwithacollapsedwindpipehasbeen saved by a groundbreaking procedure performed by surgeons at the University of Melbourne Veterinary Hospital in Werribee.
Dr Amy Pepper, medicine specialistin-training, said that when four-year-old Louis, a yorkshire terrier, arrived at the hospital four weeks ago he was close to falling into respiratory arrest.
“He had severe trouble breathing, a lung infection, he couldn’t eat and was really exhausted,” she said. “A CT scan con rmed Louis had the worst type of trachea collapse.”
With the guidance of X-rays and a surgical camera inside Louis’ trachea, surgeons installed a self-expanding stent to ensure his airway remained open.
“Surgical options for this type of collapseareveryinvasive, withprolonged recoveries and long-term complications, whereas placing a stent is minimally invasive and requires no surgery,” she said.
“Louis woke up from the procedure a new dog, able to breath properly for the rst time in his life.
“He ate immediately and then slept extremely well; these dogs are o en chronically sleep-deprived.”

Razed ship in bad shape
Police are investigating a re that gutted a popular pirate ship playground in Point Cook early Tuesday morning.

Cuts to create road ‘turmoil’
By Laura Michell
Wyndham council has lost $3.36 million in federal funding following cuts to assistance grants that were used to bankroll road works and vital services.
Funding will be reduced over the next three years a er the government announced plans to freeze annual increases.
Mayor Bob Fairclough said the budget cuts created a problem.
“Any loss of grant funding for Wyndham –which is one of the fastest growing cities and one which has a backlog of infrastructure
and services to deliver for our community –is a great concern,” he said.
Cr Fairclough said the council would have to make decisions about the most e ective way to fund and prioritise projects using the money available.
Lalor Labor MP Joanne Ryan said the government’s decision was short-sighted.
“ e Abbott government’s signi cant cuts to local councils will result in even further turmoil for local commuters, who continue to battle road congestion,” she said.
“ is [grant] makes local roads safer by improving conditions and easing congestion.

Ms Kenessy was selected to compete in the championships a er a friend suggested she enter the Australian version in Canberra in May.

Iramoo pupils will hold lunchtime discos today and tomorrow to help Ms Kenessy raise money for her trip.

‘‘ This decision … will severely compromise road safety standards ’’- Joanne Ryan
‘‘ is decision is placing an unreasonable burden on Wyndham council and will severely compromise road safety standards.
“Wyndham council will now have to make tough decisions about what they will cut because of the Abbott government’s unfair budget. at can only hurt services, roads and jobs.”
Infrastructure and Regional Development Minister Warren Truss said the government was freezing increases to assistance grants to help repair “Labor’s debt and de cit disaster”.
“I understand that councils did not welcome our decision to freeze annual indexation of nancial assistance grants for three years,” he said.
“But for many councils, the freeze will be more than o set by the abolition of the carbon tax and the injection of infrastructure investment for local communities.”

Margaret Campbell has always had a passion for helping others.

e principal of a school with about 1700 students, a local Rotarian and loving grandma, Julie Mason knows a thing or two about the people of Wyndham, writes Rebecca Miller.
What’s your connection to the local community?
I’m principal of Baden Powell College and have lived in Wyndham for 32 years, including the last four in Sanctuary Lakes. Prior to that I lived in Werribee.
I’ve been a member of Wyndham Rotary for the past 20 years.
As of July next year I will be the district governor, which means I will be supporting 71 Rotary clubs in Victoria. I will visit each club and provide guidance and support to them.
I love being involved with Rotary. I get to catch up with 25 to 30 friends every Wednesday night.
Being a member is an amazing experience. We provide weekend camps for young people and I am involved in programs including Early Act for primary students and Interact for 12-18 year olds.
ose involved in these programs meet fortnightlyandtakepartinschool, community and international projects to improve the communityandlearnthevalueofvolunteering.
Programs include making an anti-bullying DVDforschools, visitingalocalpreschooland readingbookstothechildren,andfund-raising for a new school in Cambodia to provide uniforms, books and other resources.
What do you love about Wyndham?
e cultural diversity of the people and their food. I’m eating food I wasn’t 32 years ago, including ai, Korean and African. ere’s also lots of young families in the area and retirement villages being built, so there’s a great range of ages in the community.

BizNET, is a group of individuals, businesses and companies operating within the city of Wyndham who meet once a month to exchange ideas, socialize and network within the local community.

What would you like changed in Wyndham? e tra c. I’ve spent time on committees for local government and we’ve been trying to minimise tra c. I have to double my time to get from one side of Wyndham to the other, compared with ve years ago.
How do you spend your downtime?
I love taking my two grandsons to the beach at Werribee South and to Point Cook Coastal

I
(Joe Mastroianni)
Where’s your favourite place to get co ee or a bite to eat?
Waterstone Café at Sanctuary Lakes. It’s peaceful, the food and entertainment is fantastic – the chicken parmigiana is beautiful. Ferguson Plarre in Sanctuary Lakes makes the best cappuccino.

Biznet can o you an opportunity to network in a fun, friendly and relaxing social environment. Our members and guests are from varied backgrounds including business owners, council/government sta and professional people. Wyndham Biznet committee members wish to congratulate all those Wyndham Business Award nalists and winners to be announced at the Wyndham Cultural Centre organized by the Wyndham Economic Development Unit on the 6th of September.
The next Wyndham Biznet dinner meeting will be held on Tuesday the 9th of September, at The Werribee Football Club Rooms when the guest speaker will be Nat Mercuri, who will speak on many facets of business which he will share with the members of Biznet.
The sponsor for this evening will be the Wyndham Star Weekly presented by Colin Moss.
The Wyndham Star Weekly is the latest version of what started out as the Wyndhamshire Banner in October 1902. Through various format changes and title changes one thing has remained constant - the commitment to the local community. Bringing local news, sport and entertainment along with a host of local advertising - no other form of media brings it to your door quite like the local paper. All our sta is local and committed to the local community and we are proud to be sponsoring the rst Biznet meeting under the guidance of the new committee.
New members are encouraged to come along on the night, and can be assured that you will be made most welcome, and will enjoy the company, knowledge and fun gained from attending each month.

beautiful self contained apartments. Enjoy living amongst peers in a safe and enriching environment, comfortable in the knowledge that onsite care is 24 hours a day if it is needed.

Dear Karen, I found the perfect solution for mum and dad. It’s called supportive living and is unique in Victoria. It gives the option that allows people to choose their own care in a place and at a time that’s both convenient and affordable. Even meals are cooked fresh on site.

They remain in charge, they retain their independence but have the support on hand when they need it.
Why don’t you call them and see if we can make an appointment to see them.
Their number is 1300 665 720.
I reckon it is the solution for them and us. A great peace of mind. Love Your Brother

COFFEE CAPITAL
Yarraville is earning a reputation as one of Melbourne’s coffee capitals. Already on the map for its glorious breakfasts and perfectly poached eggs, Butcher 128 in Roberts Street is getting rave reviews for its specialty brews. It was recently listed as one of Melbourne’s best new coffee hot spots, along with Cobb Lane in Anderson Street, where out-of-towners will travel miles for a soothing dose of Clement coffee and salted caramel doughnut.
BUTTER UP
The Butter Up knife is one of those gadgets that immediately has you asking: “Why didn’t somebody think of this before?”
The brainchild of three Australian designers, the Butter Up is a surprisingly simple invention that’s taken the world by storm.
It looks like a regular stainless-steel butter knife, except there’s a grater built into the blade. Which means if you have ablockofbutterthat’sashardasabrick, the holes in this knife will easily collect and soften it into creamy little strands, so you can spread it on your toast with ease.

I’m a sweet, gentle girl who will make a wonderful companion for a home with teenage kids. I love pats and cuddles. I know how to “sit” and am keen to please. I may be happy living with a friendly, de-sexed male dog and I don’t mind cats.

I can be a little shy at rst, but once I get to know you, I’ll be your best friend. I’ll make a great companion for someone who loves to snuggle. I enjoy the laid-back lifestyle and like to laze around. I am best suited to a home with older kids. I want your love to myself, so I’ll need to be the only cat in my new home.
Hyperthyroid disease of elderly cats
Hyperthyroidism is a disease of older cats caused by excessive production of thyroid hormone.
The cause is usually a benign overactive thyroid gland located in the neck area and is seen in cats mostly 10 years of age or older. Thyroid hormone has particular roles in metabolism and iodine storage.
While dogs tend to suffer from hypothyroidism, or low thyroid levels, cats are generally the opposite. After diabetes mellitus, hyperthyroidism is the second most common hormonal disease in cats.
Signs of hyperthyroidism include hyperactivity, weight loss despite a

ravenous appetite, increased thirst and urination, frequent crying, poor grooming and a rapid heartbeat. If left untreated, disease can lead to heart failure, emaciation and death. Diagnosis involves a simple blood test performed by a vet and there are good treatment options. The ideal form of treatment is via a single dose of radioactive-iodine given as an oral capsule. This is given under the supervision of a veterinary specialist in hospital but is safe and has excellent permanent results. An alternative treatment is an ongoing twice daily anti-thyroid tablet or, in cats that are very dif cult to pill, a gel applied to their ears.

Ongoing regular blood and urine tests are required to monitor this treatment.

In the backyard, there’s a lemon tree, low-maintenance gardens and timber deck. Harcourts

If ever there was a house where you could picture yourself sitting on the front porch sipping an iced tea watching the world go by, it would be this one.
There’s no mistaking its Southern-country charm and character as you drive into this quiet cul-de-sac, a part of the elite River Sanctuary estate.
The imposing American-style house dominates the streetscape and harnesses uninterrupted 180-degree views of the Werribee River and a reserve with walking tracks and wildlife viewing platforms.
Care and detail have gone into the planning of the manicured front garden where stacked stone retaining walls and a selection of leafy plants are on display.
The wide verandah reinforces its traditional design with its timber love swing for those lazy summer nights, listening to the wildlife along the riverbank or just enjoying the serenity.
Upon entry the scene is beautifully set
with Sydney blue gum oorboards owing throughout the ground level.
Leading off the entry is a large study (to the left) through double doors and, to the right, a beautiful light- lled family room with a gas log re and classic mantelpiece.
The hallway then leads straight to the kitchen which comprises American oak cabinets with reconstituted stone benchtops and stainless-steel appliances including a 900mm St George combined gas and electric cooker, Asko dishwasher, Brandt steamer oven and an island bench. The large walk-in pantry offers plenty of storage.
French doors open from the kitchen onto the decked outdoor area which sits next to a heated, in-ground, salt-chlorinated pool with Balinese-inspired water features adding a touch of resort atmosphere to the backyard.
The indoor meals area ows into an expansive living area with wall-to-wall
multi-paned windows down either side and double doors which open out to the massive backyard with sweeping lawn, a cubby house, sandpit and play area.
Beyond the living area is a large theatre room which could be converted into a fth bedroom, kids’ retreat or rumpus area.
Upstairs is the huge main bedroom (more like a main wing), which has a large walk-in wardrobe-cum-dressing room and big en suite with twin vanity basins. The other three upstairs bedrooms have multiple built-in wardrobe space and storage areas and are serviced by the stylish main bathroom.
Other creature comforts include ducted gas heating, ducted vacuum, alarm, double-glazed windows, three split-systems, automated watering system and an extended double garage with internal access and back roller door.

Young phenom ahead of the curve

Western Metro lacrosse selectors have deemed Jackson Marsh’s talents too good to hold back in his own age group.
Marsh, who represents Footscray Lacrosse Club in the under-13s, will be the youngest player in the western under-15 squad heading to the national championships in Perth later this month.
Marsh, from Hoppers Crossing, is not daunted by the prospect of playing against older, more developed players.
“I think I’ll handle it ne,” he said. “It’s exciting that I’m good enough to make the team even though I’m young.
‘‘It’s all of the extra work that I’ve been doing. I train almost every night on my face-o s and work on my speed and strength.”
Marsh has followed in the footsteps of his dad Chris to play the face-o position for Footscray.
Chris played in that position at both Footscray and Williamstown and is never short of advice for his son.
“He’s been teaching me how to do the face-o ,” Marsh said. “He’s also taught me how to catch and throw and to score goals.”

■ Sunday was going great, better than I’d expected. Footscray had a big crowd to watch the VFL nal against Williamstown, which they won to move into a preliminary nal. I was following Werribee’s battle against North Ballarat and after a classic quarter-time spray from the coach I thought they’d get home, and they did. So I headed to Etihad Stadium con dent of a win to end the Doggies’ season. I got a good run in from Hoppers Crossing and a great parking spot and it all was well. I went to the Victory Room rst. The crowd was good, considering, and the vibe was great. I was to interview Simon Garlick who, like me, was buoyed by the VFL result. The room was buzzing and the red, white and blue army was up and about. It was Gia’s last game and the commitment to win it for him was everywhere. An hour later it could not have been more sombre. The Dogs’ second-quarter performance was just plain awful. My half-time job was to interview president Peter Gordon, who was not happy with what we’d just seen. To his credit, he did the interview and was very honest about the big picture and the immediate picture. The boys did ght back in the third quarter and it turned out to be an exciting spectacle, which the Giants won by a goal. Daniel Giansiracusa nished his illustrious career with two out-of-bounds kicks, and the Dogs end the season with seven wins. Gordon made the point that he isn’t happy to make up the AFL numbers and will be doing his best to make the Bulldogs a powerhouse.
■ One positive watching the Bulldogs was the game of William Hoskin-Elliot. The former North Sunshine junior is a star for GWS and his ve-goal performance was brilliant. He’s emerging as a super talent and, along with other former WRFL juniors like Cal Ward, Bachar Houli and the recently retired Ryan O’Keefe, has showcased the WRFL as a great pathway to future success. Keep an eye, too, on Connor Thar, who won his second B&F award in the WRFL juniors.
Scoring goals is Marsh’s forte. He red in no fewer than 77 goals for his club side this regular season.
Marsh looks up to senior Footscray players
James Lawerson and Chris Plumb. Lawerson was a star for Australia at the recent world championships, while Plumb was named as an alternate.
Marsh is con dent the west’s best have what it takes to succeed in WA.
He’s one of four Footscray juniors, including Oscar Latch, Michael Mravlek and Jack Vella to make the trip.
“I’m happy that I’ve made the team and I’m looking forward to it,” Marsh said. “I really want to win the title and I reckon we’ve got a good chance.”
Gri n Nicholas, Callan Gibson, Lachlan Russell, Jordan O’Driscoll and Jacob Poole, who is an alternate, have made the squad from Williamstown.
Ben Tither, Simon Cashat, Nick Burgess and alternate Saimone Lino will y the ag for Altona.

BULLDOGS IN FOCUS
In a regular series, Western Bulldogs president Peter Gordon and player Ayce Cordy write exclusively for Star Weekly

THE
PRESIDENT Peter Gordon
Unful lled promise remains
Memo to everyone in the football department and our fans. Dear Everyone, Looking back, maybe our fast and winning nish to season 2013 gave us a sense of optimism and inevitability for a further ladder climb in 2014. Maybe the competition got better. Maybe 2014 showed the growing pains that are unavoidable and unpredictable for a young side on the move.
But no explanation provides much comfort as we assume our all-too-familiar position at the top of the bottom quartile of the AFL ladder for season 2014.
ere’s been so much hard work by so many good people that it hurts to sit here this morning and write re ections on another season that was just not good enough.
So while I wish the players well on their Mad Monday, truth is, it’s a mad Monday for me, too … a di erent kind of mad. is morning, we begin a review of football operations that will be characterised by brutal honesty.
No one comes in to footy seeking out mediocrity. I know I didn’t resume the position of president at the Western Bulldogs prepared to accept year a er year of unful lled promise. is year was not good enough.
I will get better and work harder for our club. at’s my promise to you. It’s also my expectation of each and every one of you.
anks to all our members and fans who helped us out this year. anks to everyone who made it such a huge and successful day for the return of blockbuster footy at the Whitten Oval on Sunday. Good luck to our young Footscray side in the next month as it battles for VFL honours.
And thanks to the people of StarWeekly for the opportunity I have had this year to write for our many western region fans.

Little brother is now a man
It’s funny how quickly life goes. The six years since I got to the Western Bulldogs have whizzed by at the speed of light.
I still remember my little brother as a 12-year-old kid, a little smart arse who was just a child.
I haven’t lived with him for six years but every day I see him now he reminds me of myself.
He has the same mannerisms and everyone comments on how similar we look. Mum and dad have obviously produced two very similar children.
He’s 17 now and he’s a young man. It’s funny when you suddenly realise he is no longer the little kid you remember.
What impresses me most is that he has become a man in his own right but at the same time is very much another Cordy and is very similar to the rest of the family.
He’s dealing with a lot of pressure right now, year 12 exams and the pressure of potentially being drafted, and it brings back a lot of memories.
He’s handling it really well, he’s still enjoying life and still smiling and I’m very proud of him.
Whatever the next step of his journey, if he gets drafted or not, I would love to take him under my wing and look after him.
He’s his own person though and he’ll find his way on his own path. The last thing he wants is to be seen as my little brother or my dad’s son, I think that’s the best part about him.
He’s very family-oriented and unselfish and whether he ends up in the AFL or not, he will still make our family very proud.

Warrior battles jet lag, world champ, to stay on course
One man – a signi cant one in the world of BMX – has denied Wyndham Warriors star Jordan Morgan a breakthrough world title.
Four-time defending world champion Robin van der Kolk le the eld in his wake in the 24-inch cruiser class at the UCI BMX world championships in Rotterdam.
Morgan mustered all the power he could out of the gates, but van der Kolk beat him to the rstcornerandwasnighonimpossibletocatch from that point on.
“Being inside a stadium, the track was pretty short so it was pretty much whoever can get to the rst turn rst would do the best,” Morgan told Star Weekly “You base all your training around explosive
power to get out of the gate and to the bottom of the start hill as fast as you can and from there it’s all about trying to hold it together.
“I equalled my best ever result and nished second so I was pretty rapt with that.”
Morgan came second out of 135 competitors from across the globe.
edeterminedWerribeeresidentreplicated hissecondplacingattheworldsinCopenhagen in 2011.
It is no disgrace to come runner-up to a man of the stature of Dutchman van der Kolk.
“It means the world to me,” Morgan said of his podium nish.
“He’s won four world titles in a row and is the only guy to ever do that.”
Morgan endured his fair share of issues in the lead-up to the race. e 24-year-old had to overcome a number of injury setbacks and jet lag during the competition.
“We arrived on the Saturday morning and I raced on the Wednesday and Friday morning,” he said. “I wasn’t feeling too good a er practice so I wasn’t sure which way things were going to go. Even during racing I had bad jet lag.”
Morgan, who secured much-needed funding from the Wyndham council to get to the world championships, trained at least an hour a day, seven days a week to be ready for the event.
He is hellbent on continuing his push towards a world title.

Hoppers’ red-letter day
By Lance Jenkinson
Hoppers Crossing’s hometown heroes have completed their mission to become Football Federation Victoria men’s State League 4 West champions.
e Reds sealed the deal with a 2-1 win against the Point Cook Jets at Grange Reserve on Saturday, sparking wild celebrations at the Hogans Road club.
e construction of this premiership team has been years in the making, not brought together by some fat cat with a pie-in-the-sky dream. e overwhelming majority of the playerswerebornintotheRedsandwillforever remain in club folklore.
“We’ve got 13 or 14 players who played juniors here winning a title,’’ captain Kevin Smart said.
‘‘ ere’s not that many clubs in Victoria, even Australia, that can boast those numbers.
“So many of the players’ dads and even granddads played at this club … you’ve got generations that are ingrained here.
“I’vewontitlesforotherclubs, butthisdoesn’t match; you don’t have the same camaraderie that we have as a club.”
e Reds were slow out of the blocks, which
Smart put down to “a bit of nerves” and an opponent with intentions of spoiling the party.
A goal to John Little calmed the Reds and they returned to playing the kind of football thatmadethemtherunawayladderleaderfrom day one.
Little, who returned to the club this season a er a stint with Yarraville Glory, got in behind the defence and produced a searing strike for a half-time lead.
e Reds doubled the margin early in the second half when Khalil Assaad slotted a le -footer.
ItwasacrucialgoalbecausetheReds’defence could not keep Point Cook o the scoresheet and they halved the de cit midway through the second half.
But Hoppers Crossing held on for dear life and Smart was ecstatic that Little and Assaad weretheplayerswhoscoredthetitle-con rming goals. “ ey’ve worked hard all year to try and maintain their tness – going to personal trainers, going to physios on a Monday morning, going to physios on a Tuesday night a er training, so they deserved it.”
e sweetest part for the Reds was being able to clinch the title on home soil.
Ken Smart – father of Kevin, Alister and Steve, a former national leaguer with Green

Wyndham Warriors father and son Matt and Tyler Young had to pull out a er Matt su ered an injury in a training mishap in Sweden days beforethecompetition.Mattwasunderdoctor’s instructions not to y to the event.
“It was their rst world championships so it would’ve been a very good experience to do it together,” Morgan said. “It’s a real shame because I think they would’ve done pretty good.”
Flawless Falcons soar to new heights
Wyndhamvale held on for dear life to clinch an historic Victorian Women’s Football League premiership on Sunday. e Falcons somehow escaped with a narrow ve-point win over the Whitehorse Colts in a grand nal thriller at Coburg City Oval, going undefeated in their second season of existence.
Wyndhamvale won the division 3 decider, 5.5 (35) to 4.6 (30).
Falcons coach Kerry Saunders could hardly bare to look at the scoreboard as her side nursed a precarious lead for the majority of the second half.
“It’s what you call hanging on by the skin of your teeth isn’t it?” Saunders said.
“ e players, they were ecstatic, but for me and the other coaches, it was like ‘thank God’.
‘‘I’m more relieved than anything.” ere was one non-negotiable for all teams in the nals – that defence wins matches.
But the Falcons, free scoring and tight defensively in the regular season, proved the most adaptable, and it was the key to their premiership.
A er booting three goals to two in the rst term, the Falcons set about preserving the lead and produced the kind of defence that a wrecking ball would struggle to penetrate.
Kayla Slattery might have kicked three of the Falcons’ ve goals in a match-winning performance, but it was her crucial game-saving marks in defence late in the last quarter that saw her get the plaudits from her coach.
Gully and a premiership winner at the Reds –spoke of the importance of winning in front of the fans when he addressed the team before the match.
“He’s won ve titles,” Smart said of his father. “Four were away from home and he said the only one that felt really sweet was winning it at home. It makes it that little bit sweeter because you’ve got your home crowd, family, friends, committee members, ex-players, thirds players. I coach the 16s and we had seven of them come along, a couple of the 15s … we enjoyed it as a club together.”
e Reds belted out a rousing rendition of the now-customary winner’s song Champeone, led by one of the team’s biggest supporters, Brenton Ray.
e team celebrated in style, too, with a number of players renting out a city penthouse for the weekend. It was a chance for the players to let their hair down a er coach Alfonso Opazo and assistant Gus Dos Santos put them through the rigours at training in recent months.
“Fonz and Gus have been putting us through hellattraining,”Smartsaid.“Itshowsthathard work wins you championships.”

Leah Olsen also had the presence of mind to leave her post further up the ground and give a helping hand to her defenders.
ey weren’t alone in refusing to yield to the Colts’ pressure.
“We couldn’t a ord a passenger and there wasn’t one,” Saunders said.
“Our lot were pretty determined to not let [Whitehorse] get what they needed to win. Everyone worked their butts o .” e Falcons are likely to be promoted to division 2 with the other dominant regular season side, Port Melbourne Colts. Saunders has urged the VWFL to also consider promoting Whitehorse.
“ ey are a gun side, they’re young and they’re certainly not going to go backwards,” she said.
“You want to have a strong base of teams in there and the league is getting it, so let’s not leave them behind.”
e Falcons celebrated their rst ag win at their clubrooms on Sunday night, before heading to the Commercial Hotel in Werribee for ‘mad Monday’ festivities.

Revitalised Roosters strut their stuff
West Footscray is peaking at the right time to give Parkside a run for its money in the Western Region Football League division 2 grand nal at Chirnside Park in Werribee this Sunday.
e rampaging Roosters blasted Wyndhamvale o the park in the second half of the preliminary nal at Wootten Road Reserve on Saturday to win by 43 points and advance to their rst grand nal since 2007.
e boys in red and white piled on ve goals tonilinthethirdquartertoholdanunassailable 45-point lead at three-quarter time.
West Footscray went on to win 13.18 (96) to 7.11 (53) and set up a cracking decider between two of the WRFL’s traditional clubs.
It was a proud moment for Roosters coach Trevor Davies, who returned to the club in a co-coaching capacity with David Orchard in the o -season to help get it o the canvas.
“Going back and having a bit of success with the club and making it competitive again has been satisfying,’’ he said.
“Just to see the energy around the place at the moment, especially with the older blokes who
have gone through some lean times in the past seven or eight years, it’s fantastic to see them enjoying a bit of success.’’
e Roosters brought in a number of big-name recruits in the o -season.
But just as important in dealings for Davies was convincing onballers Mark Speakman and Jadyn Trowsdale to stick with the club.
“ ey’ve been playing at Wests for the past three or four years and gone through the hard times,” Davies said.
“It’s a credit to them that they’ve stuck with the club and we’ve been able to bring a bit of quality in and produce a quality side.”
One of those newcomers, Micael Newport, starred in a best-a eld game on the wing and half-forward on Saturday, snaring four crucial goals.
Damien Yze needed no introduction when he arrived at the Chook Pen, having come o a 100-plus-goal season in a premiership side with Glenorden last season.
Yze also booted four goals and looms as a match-winner for the Roosters in the grand nal.

Tigers surge into prelim
By Lance Jenkinson
Werribee Districts had to withstand the full force of local rival Hoppers Crossing for three tight quarters before powering to a 41-point victoryinacut-throatWesternRegionFootball League division 1 semi- nal at Chirnside Park on Saturday.
No more than a kick separated the two Wyndham sides at every change, but the Tigers pulled away in the last term to book a third meeting in ve weeks with Spotswood.
Saturday’s preliminary nal will be back at the Watton Street ground.
e Tigers were fully expecting a hard game against Hoppers Crossing, according to co-captain Matt Dean.
“A couple of us went down last Sunday and watched Hoppers Crossing against St Albans and they played some pretty impressive football,” he said.
“Itwasobviouslycloseupuntilthree-quarter time, but our forwards got a few through the big ones in the last quarter, which gave us some breathing space.”
Chris Molivas was an X-factor for the Tigers with ve goals.
He had to take control of the forward line, with partner-in-crime Andrew Panayi a late withdrawal with a lower leg injury.
Molivas, who booted more than 50 goals in the regular season, needed a bounce-back performance a er a quiet outing against Spotswood a week earlier.
“He said he had had a pretty quiet game last week and was keen to make amends, which he did,” Dean said.
Aaron Taylor booted two crucial last-quarter goals.
Once the oodgates opened, the Tigers kept piling on the goals, leading to a somewhat attering margin.
“Getting a couple of goals early in the last quarter broke their backs a little bit,” Dean said. “Once you get that three or four goals up in a nal … that scoreboard pressure mentally hurts the opposition. Once you can smell a victory, you run on top of the ground a bit more.”
Dean and co-captain Brent Morrow were named best for the Tigers, the former for his tirelessworkinthemid eld, thelatterforbeing a pillar at centre-half back.
UnsungherofortheTigerswasruckmanTate McCutcheon, who battled manfully against pre-eminent big man in the competition, Wayde Skipper.
“We valued everything Tate did today, competing against a class ruckman, probably the best ruckman in the league.” Dean said.
“He nulli ed as much as he could with the

massive height di erence. He’s a competitor –he hates being beaten no matter who he’s up against.”

Rays down weary Jets
e Western Jets were made to pay the ultimate price for a lacklustre rst half in a 15-point loss to the Dandenong Stingrays in Sunday’s TAC Cup elimination nal at Visy Park.
e Jets prepared for the loose players who the Stingrays would inevitably place across their half-forward line and placed an emphasis on smart use of the ball going into attack.
Buttheymighthaveovercompensated, overusing the handball and losing their usual uency as they went down 13.8 (86) to 10.11 (71).
“It was a bit of poor execution early in the game that hurt us,” Jets coach Torin Baker said. “We were chasing for most of the day and you spend your petrol tickets trying to get back into the game.”
In fairness, the Jets were behind the eight-ball before the ball was even bounced. ey lost two dra prospects to injury, with scans on Wednesday revealing that Corey Ellis had stress fractures in his foot and Jayden Laverde had not recovered from a corked thigh su ered in the previous game.
Ruckman Mark Orr compounded the injury list when he was ruled out on Friday night a er contracting a fever.
“ ey didn’t help the cause, but that’s footy,” Baker said.
“We certainly had the chances to win the game and it wasn’t to be.”
e Jets got back on a level footing late in the second quarter, only for parity to be ripped away by some late Dandenong goals, putting the Stingrays 10 points up at half-time.
A huge third term from Connor Menadue got the Jets back in the contest.
Menadue sensed his side needed a li a er the injury bug struck again, this time to prime mover Liam Duggan.
Duggan was the Jets’ best player in the rst half but from then on was restricted to playing from the goal square to compensate for a corked thigh.
Menadue, Pele Manivong and Brenton Payne snared two goals each as the Jets nished strongly, but it was the Stingrays who made the better of late chances.
A season of promise came to a grinding halt for the Jets.

Inspirational captain Jarred Moore was the leading vote-getter for the Werribee Tigers in Monday night’s Liston Trophy count for best and fairest in the Victorian Football League.
Moore, a hard-nosed mid elder, polled 10 votes, a long way back from Box Hill Hawks’ Alex Woodward, who nished on 20 votes ahead of North Ballarat’s Liam Anthony (17) and Footscray’s Tom Campbell (15).
Moore was also named on the interchange bench in the VFL team of the year, alongside youngster Tom Gribble.
A third Tiger, Jye Bolton, was named on the wing.
Jobi Harper was the top Tiger in the Todd Medal count, for best and fairest in the AFL development league, with six votes.
Harper nished seven votes behind joint winners Josh Muling (Port Melbourne) and Peter McEvoy (Box Hill Hawks).
Werribee president John Nicol was one of four people given VFL life membership for long service to the competition.

Werribee produced one of its most spirited performances of the season to down North Ballarat Roosters by 37 points in the Victorian Football League elimination nal at North Port Oval on Sunday.
e Tigers had their backs against the wall when they lost captain Jarred Moore to a head knock midway through the rst quarter and wound up two rotations short when Kieran Harper was injured in the third.
Tigers coach John Lamont lauded his players for sticking to the task in the face of adversity.
“I thought our blokes showed a fair bit of character,” he told StarWeekly “ ey just responded to the challenge, kept working at it with repeat e orts and making good decisions with the ball.”
It was an occasion for the young or inexperienced players to step up.
Nathan Laracy, playing just his 12th senior game in his h year of VFL, produced his best at top level with 24 possessions, nine marks and a goal in a best-on-ground outing.
Tom Gribble, Sam Martyn, Jake Sharp and Brody Mihocek – all under 21 – also rose to the occasion.
e Tigers needed them to step up a er seeing a number of their most promising North Melbourne-aligned players earn promotion to the AFL side in recent weeks.
“Itaddsfurthermerittothewaytheteamwas able to win without them,” Lamont said.
“Blokes just stood up and did their bit, didn’t go over the top and just worked hard at it. It was just an even contribution.”
e Tigers were able to break the game open withafour-goal-to-onethirdterm. eyrubbed further salt into the wounds in the last quarter to walk away with a tidy six-goal win.
Jye Bolton knocked up a team-high 27 possessions, while Jobi Harper was ferocious in the mid eld with 10 tackles.
Big men Trent Shinners and Dylan Reid made their presence felt in the ruck and around the ground. Ben Warren was the focal point in

attack with three goals.
“It was pleasing with the way the young guys responded.Foralotofthemitwasthe rsttime [in the nals] at this level,” Lamont said.
e Tigers have set up a cut-throat semi- nal with Williamstown on Sunday.

The Development league side finished on the weekend. You are a fan of that competition, Why?
of the western suburbs rivalry in the lead-up to the game, the carrot of a preliminary nal was too much for the players to get caught up in the hype. “ ere’s a little bit there … we just need to…haveclearheadsandplaythewaywewant to play.”

Absolutely. I think it is vital to the ongoing future of the VFL as a competition and as a pathway to the AFL. The style of play and the speed of the game is what makes it really important. As the name implies we are developing players to be ready for the VFL and in the same process the AFL. The skill set they need can be honed at this level and the speed, while still a bit shy of the AFL level, is a lot closer than suburban football. That style and speed is what drives better decision making because you have to be decisive or you won’t make it. I have watched with interest two blokes this year who have gone from our program to the AFL, in Ben Brown and Luke McDonald. Two very different types of player, but both had to make adjustments to their games to make their mark. Ben played some development games before becoming a permanent part of our VFL side and he is showing the benefit of that apprenticeship, if you like. From a selfish coaching point of view having our listed players training and playing in our system is a big benefit. In recent weeks we have had injuries and the unavailability of some Nortn Melbourne players has meant we have brought new players into the senior side. Whether it has been a seasoned campaigner like Nathan Laracy or a first gamer like Lee Dale, they have slotted straight in and played their role. “Lara” capped it off last week being the ABC best on ground in the final against North Ballarat. There is no measuring stick but I fell it makes a huge difference in the transition from one level to the next.
This weekend it is the old enemy Williamstown in a do or die final. How has the preparation been?
Really good in all aspects. We have a good squad to choose from and we know what is required. Our start last week was not good but we have addressed that and I am confident that won’t happen again. We all know the challenge and the reward if we meet and beat that challenge. There is no substitute for hard work and commitment. The cream rises to the top at this time of year, our boys know that , accept that and plan to be that.
Again I would love all Werribee supporters to be at North Port Oval on Sunday from 2.10pm to cheer the boys on. Go Tigers.
