A day to remember ... Anzac Day parades are set to draw crowds again in both Albury and Wodonga. With horses, planes, vets and children front and centre, find out how Albury councillor and RSL president Graham Docksey plans to make Albury’s parade another moving tribute. Terry’s newest medal By KRYSTEN MANUEL WITH Anzac Day around the corner, Wodonga veteran Terrance Hampstead received a very welcome surprise when he was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for decades of service to the Wodonga RSL Sub-Branch. “It means a lot to me,” he said. “For 30 years with the RSL on the committee I worked with seven presidents. It’s phenomenal to have it.” The Meritorious Service Medal was first awarded in 1982 when the National Executive of the RSL agreed to the concept as an honour over and above Life Membership. It can only be awarded to those already holding Life Membership, those who have had 30 years’ continuous membership and those who have given 25 years of outstanding service. Mr Hampstead has served as vice-president of the Wodonga RSL Sub-Branch for 17 years and has actively been involved with the veteran community, providing welfare support to returned service personnel, and Legacy visits as a welfare officer. He has served as the RSL funeral service member, provided continual support to the Hume Veterans Information Centre and the club on com-

His work has been purely voluntary and his commitment and support to the RSL club and veteran community come highly regarded. Mr Hampstead joined the army on 27 February 1959 and left on 26 February 1980. “I did two tours of Vietnam, the first tour was ’67-’68, then again in ’70-’71,” he said. “’70-’71 was the worst tour. I had a large armoured personnel carrier blown from underneath me. I found out when I got home I had a fractured vertebra on the top of my neck. Continued on page 5

This year’s hunt at Mayday Hills saw around 2000 children and family members line up for a piece of the action, which also involved an appearance from the Easter Bunny and Festive Factory character Flitter the Giant Butterfly. WITH stage one of their building works program officially opened by Major General David McLachlan (Ret’d) AO, the Wodonga RSL Sub-Branch is the place to be this Anzac Day. “We’ve extended our outdoor entertaining area to accommodate the members and the veterans, it gives us more space and makes the place look better from the street,” secretary Jenny Bolt said. “On Anzac Day we have breakfast at 6.30am which is $10 a head, then there’s the march of course. After the march people come back here, the Scouts have food in the car park and our chef will have food from the kitchen.

“We also have two-up and hopefully if the weather stays in our favour it should be a wonderful day.” Funds for renovations are the result of hard work by the club, some assistance from Anzac House and with any luck, a grant will come through for outdoor furniture. “So far, we’ve put new furniture inside the building and we also have a new chef, Ted Furst,” Ms Bolt said. “He’s bought a lot of different people to the club, which is wonderful. We only have meals, at this stage, on a Friday night from 6pm. We hope to extend that to other nights of the week. “The kitchen has had some work done to it - we’ve had a

Today’s Anzacs

Parade of planning By KRYSTEN MANUEL

By KRYSTEN MANUEL

Lieutenant-Colonel Wayne Carman will be among the 1000 army personnel participating in public Anzac Day celebrations around the region. the operations since World War One, in particular remembering the fallen.” Many people see army officers as today’s Anzacs, with many similar characteristics. “Well there’s the enduring qualities - courage, initiative, teamwork, respect, the mateship and the camaraderie, and the requirement to go and do something that is for the best part frightening, dangerous, but also something we’re trained to do, something we’re willing to do.” Lt-Col Carman joined the

army in 1987 and was most recently deployed to Afghanistan for seven months into a senior logistics planning position, returning in 2009. “I’d previously done East Timor, and as far as an experience for someone in the military it was excellent,” he said. “The support and the work the Australian and Coalition forces are doing over there is important and obviously needed, particularly where the Australians are. The provision of support they provided for the locals was excellent.” 1128132-LN14-14

WHILE Anzac Day is an opportunity to remember those who served in WWI, it is also an opportunity to thank those who served in more recent times, and who are currently serving. Anzac Day, for LieutenantColonel Wayne Carman, is a chance to do just that, as well as immerse himself, and 1000 other army personnel, in the public celebrations of Anzac Day. “This year for Anzac Day I’ll be here at the army base in Bandiana,” he said. “I’ll be a wreath layer and we’ll be having a large Dawn Service followed by marching in both Wodonga and Albury. “This year we’ll have approximately 1000 people attend the Dawn Service here in Bandiana and then we’ll split up to different groups to form contingents to support both Albury and Wodonga. “We will also be providing support to about 36 outlying areas up to three hours away, supporting smaller RSL-led Anzac Day ceremonies. That’s an important part of our engagement strategy and something we really enjoy getting involved with. “Anzac Day is relevant today because it’s part of our history. From my point of view, and again in my job, it’s important because it’s not only remembering the Anzacs and what they did, but we actually include everyone on ops, all

THE parade is always a highlight on the Anzac Day calendar and this year’s is sure to draw the crowds once again. In his second year of organising, Albury councillor and RSL president Graham Docksey will again put his passion and knowledge of the Anzac Day celebration to good use, creating a spectacular event of reverence and remembrance. “This year the parade will follow traditional lines - there will be bands, veterans and uniformed military members marching,” he said. “But this year, because we’re now closing our involvement with the Afghanistan war, I’ve asked the Afghanistan veterans to lead the march behind the RSL headquarters group. “That will be followed by the 400-strong army component, led by the Albury Wodonga Pipes and Drums’ stirring music, that will be followed by vehicles carrying the soldiers and men and women who are not able to march. “There will be six horses and they will lead the school group for a change. The Albury City Band will lead the veteran group, so they will be the second band. “This year, Flight Lieutenant Danny Salmon tells me the air force cadets will have a

guard of honour, plus they will have a marching group and for the first time they will have their own pipes and drums band. “They’re very supportive of the RSL and we’re very grateful for their involvement. “I’ve asked a pilot to fly the first vintage aircraft across at about 8.55am to stir the crowd up, then to circle and come back a little bit later after that. “I’m confirming with the army that we can get two vehicles to clear the street in front of the parade in a ceremonial way, then they hold ground at the other end of the street for our own protection. Hopefully we can get the Bushmasters in! “Everyone will march the full length of Dean Street from the assembly area at the eastern end. The army groups, the school children, will turn left into Townsend Street this year, and they’ll disperse down there. “Everyone else will turn into Elizabeth Street - that will stop the confusion that’s been relevant in the past. I don’t want to mix children, veterans, horses and vehicles together, it’s a bad combination.” Cr Docksey said the organisation of the 2014 parade had been made easier thanks to his previous experience last year, as well as the ability to work with the police, council and RSL.

This year’s Anzac Day parade is sure to draw the crowds. “This year the police will be involved again because it’s not very often they get the chance to publicly march and be given accolades for the tremendous amount of work they do, and the same thing for the SES - they will march again.” Cr Docksey said above all, people must remember who the parade was for and why. “What’s important is the day is all about the veterans still,” he said. “We invite the schools to participate and we welcome them, but we must remember they don’t take pride of place it is all about the veterans. The parade is an opportunity for the wider community to acknowledge those who have gone before us and those who are currently serving this country, in a very public forum.”

Crosses in their memory By KRYSTEN MANUEL THE 13th annual Albury War Widows Anzac Field of Remembrance Service was delivered with two major changes this year, but still provided a reverent setting for those left behind to pay their respects. For the first time, the service was not held in QEII Square, a positive move according to many. “It was a very good service and I think it had a lot more meaning being in the church (St Matthews Anglican Church), a lot of people said they got more out of it because it was in the church,” Albury and District War Widows Guild Club president Val Evans said. “We couldn’t use QEII this year because the council are building out there. Hopefully, we might keep having it in the church.” And the venue wasn’t the only welcome change to the service. Seven denominations, including local Aboriginal elder, Nancy Rooke, were invited to participate in the service, representing a shared respect for the fallen and those left behind. “Usually Archdeacon Peter MacLeodMiller would do the prayers when we had it out in QEII Square, but when we decided to have it in the church he invited all the other denominations there, which was a very good idea,” Ms Evans said. Last Tuesday’s service saw a full crowd at St Matthews, with Fr MacLeod-Miller leading the service. “For the 13th time at the Field of Remembrance we meet again to remember those who have their lives in the conflicts of our time, that we might enjoy freedom and peace,” he said. For Ms Evans and other war widows, the service was a chance to come together and remember their loved ones in a more formal, united setting. “I think it’s a good thing,” she said. “The women really appreciate it, they all help

in their own little way. “We are war widows because we lost our husbands or our fathers, grandfathers or brothers in war service, or else they had bad war service and they died later. It’s a form of remembering them. “My husband was in the Second World War. He fought in New Guinea. He came home but he had a lot of injuries and the last few years he had

lots of trips to Melbourne because it all caught up with him. He passed away on 2 March 2001. “With your husband, you never really get over it, although he never talked a great deal about the war until the last few years when he got really sick. He used to say ’It’s past, you can’t keep bringing up the past,’ but it was still on his mind. It was a good thing, I think, that he did talk about it in the last few years.

“You give them all the support you can. It’s difficult and it’s something you never forget, it’s there in your mind all the time but you have to learn to live with it.” During the service, crosses were dedicated to those who had fallen by representatives of the community, with red crosses representing the army, navy blue crosses for the navy and pale blue for the air force.

Terry’s newest medal From page 1. “The first tour I was the transport NCO looking after the B vehicles and also going out to resupply the carriers with fuel and rations. “The second tour I was the section commander in charge of three vehicles.” When Mr Hampstead and his comrades returned from the Vietnam War, they came home to a reception typical of the time. “We were spat on, weren’t

recognised, treated like murderers,” he said. “We didn’t know who we were fighting because the North Vietnamese and the South Vietnamese were the same. Of a daytime we might be working with the South Vietnamese and of a night they might be shooting at you, we didn’t know where we were.” These unique but sad shared experiences brought the members of the RSL closer together, prompting Mr Hampstead to work long and hard to keep

the RSL alive, “look after the members” and continue the atmosphere of “mateship.” This Anzac Day, Mr Hampstead will be looking after his wife, Lee, who has had an operation, but in previous years he would offer his time and efforts where they were needed. “Generally I go down and help sort out the wreaths,” he said. “I can’t march any more, my legs won’t let me, and I used to play two-up.”

Breakfast on the march By KRYSTEN MANUEL THIS year the delicious aroma of bacon, eggs, sausages and coffee will awaken the crowd’s senses as they move from the Dawn Service to the Dean Street march on Anzac Day - and all in the name of Headspace. Border Trust, the Community Foundation for the Border will be hosting the inaugural Border Trust Anzac Day Breakfast in QEII Square, Albury. “Kim Farrah, our former board member, bought the idea to the board because he felt that it would really fill a niche and assist the RSL between the dawn service and the Dean Street parade,” Border Trust executive officer Glenys Atkins said. “With more people attending the Dawn Service, we felt there was an opportunity to provide

a service by offering a barbecue breakfast, but also to fund-raise at the same time. “Anzac Day is special to very many local families, and our hope is to provide a meeting point for people to gather between the Dawn Service and the march. “For this, our inaugural breakfast, we chose to raise funds for Headspace Albury Wodonga, given the public’s overwhelming push to bring this service to our region. “We really felt that local money going to that local cause would be a beneficial charity for our inaugural breakfast.” The barbecue breakfast, including bacon and egg rolls and sausages (as well as Boost Juice and a coffee van), will be available from 6.30am until the conclusion of the march at approximately 10am.

OVER 3000 Easter eggs sparkled in the Sunday morning sunlight at Mayday Hills Oval, with kids of all ages set to snap them up. As part of the Golden Horseshoes Festival, the hunt is an event marked firmly in the calendars of young families and their extended members, but only made possible by generous volunteers. “A massive thanks to all of the community volunteers,” Golden Horseshoes organising committee coach Jodie Goldsworthy said.

Stella Bonacci with someone she’d like to be... the Easter Bunny (Julia Schlender).

It was “Let the hunt begin!” as the kids were let loose. 119080 Photos: ADAM WILSON “The whole event is free and we did appreciate those who came with a gold coin donation. It is a community event put on by community volunteers who choose to get out of bed on a Sunday morning and go and do something nice for others.” Ms Goldsworthy said the event has been running in excess of ten years, but this year’s venue change proved to be a real success. “This year, holding it at the Mayday Hills’ Oval worked really well because we were able to hold the excitement back and make it a little bit more orderly in terms of spreading the kids out so all the children had a good opportunity to find eggs,” she said. “Everybody had the same chance, whereas in some of the venues we’ve had previ-

ously the quickest kids got the most. By spreading them around the fence of the oval before we let them loose, it dispersed the kids evenly amongst the eggs, which is really important.” This year also welcomed an appearance from the Easter Bunny, heightening the excitement and providing even more entertainment. “At Christmas time you see Santa Clause everywhere, but the Easter Bunny seems to be a little more elusive,” Ms Goldsworthy said. “The children don’t really mind if they find one egg or 10, it’s the anticipation and the excitement of having to wait for something and be let loose into an area where they know there are eggs. “It brings back all our childhood memories of those sorts of things.”

Duck in to this one for a bit By KRYSTEN MANUEL IT’S the excited chatter of smitten guests that has people making tracks through the stunning Victorian High Country... The historic and iconic Blue Duck Inn Hotel is not the sort of place you just happen to ‘come by’. Situated at the confluence of three great trout rivers - the Cobungra, Bundarra and Mitta Mitta, its location, Anglers Rest, is a dead giveaway to the peace and serenity you can expect from this enchanting little pub. Word of not only the amazing location, but high quality, home-made food and charming cabins has travelled the world, attracting families, honeymooners, motorcycle enthusiasts, bush walkers, whitewater rafters, horse riders, bird watchers, fishermen and cyclists alike. “It’s a very unique environment - we don’t have mains power, we don’t have mobile phone reception, running as we did 100 years ago on a generator,” owner, Lana Antony said. The original 1900 building was a slab construction cut from local timber, which operated as a butcher’s shop offering fresh meat to miners. Billy O’Connell, a successful miner, bought the building and obtained a hotel licence in 1912, but ended up nailing a panning dish to the front of the hotel and wrote with irony, ‘Blue Duck.’ (If a gold lease produces no gold, it’s known as a blue duck.) In the early ’20s, Billy O’Connell transported two houses from Omeo - room by room - through the bush on horse drays. One is the main building of the Blue Duck, the other was used as a residence on the cabin site. Lana Antony and Michael Mullis bought the Blue Duck in 2008 and fell in love with its to-diefor location and amazing history, much of which

is displayed in the building today. “The building has weathered three fires and about four floods,” Lana said. “The first buildings brought out here are still exactly the same buildings. They’ve been joined together now and a bar has been built, but we’ve followed along the lines of keeping it

looking original and not making too many changes.” In keeping with the theme, the Blue Duck a la carte menu is composed of locally sourced ingredients and food made on-site, with the 400g prime scotch fillet the main attraction - perfect to follow with crusty garlic bread and home-made bread and butter pudding.

Finally, when you come for a meal and can’t tear yourself away from the place, pull up for a night or three in one of the six two-bedroom cabins. All beautifully appointed, it’s your choice as to whether you’re after rustic, raw timber or something with a more modern feel. Visit The Blue Duck Inn, Omeo Highway, Anglers Rest, 03 5159 7220.

Riot heard in Melbourne AFTER claiming the number-one spot in the Unearthed Punk Charts with ‘Never Alone’, punk-based Rutherglen/Barham band ‘I Am The Riot’ are set to release their debut album ‘Hearts’. As the name suggests, this release from Melbourne’s I Am The Riot is full of heartbreak and redemption. “Heartbreak? Well everyone has that in one way or another,” bass player Tyson Venn said. “Redemption comes through travelling the world, and through boozy nights playing music with best friends.” I Am The Riot is composed of four members - Patrick Russell, Brendan Ryder, Nick Ryder and Tyson Venn, and recorded their debut album at The Base Recording Studios with ARIA nominated producer Phil Threlfall. The four country boys moved to the big smoke after high school and have been cutting their teeth in Melbourne punk, rock and rockabilly bands for the last eight years. They came together to form I Am The Riot in late 2012 and have been showing Melbourne their home-grown style of gutsy blue-collar anthems ever since. “I think I loved performing before I even learnt how to play the guitar,” lead vocalist and guitarist Brendan Ryder said. “I was always enthralled by musicians and how powerful the moment

was when the lights went down, where everyone took a breath in anticipation of what was about to happen. Then when the lights came on, the wall of sound seemed to shake my soul into submission. “I knew what I wanted to do.” Hearts was written by Ryder in honky-tonks and dive bars downsouth USA and south of the border. With the songs referencing both their own small home town, the city they now call home and those that stole Ryder’s heart in the USA, I Am The Riot are carving their own niche in Australia’s thriving music scene From the first chord of Sugar Skulls, to the last epic note of Half Cut Plans, Ryder takes listeners on a cross continental journey of grand proportions. “From Elvis to Gaslight, from Johnny Cash to Against Me! from Springsteen to The Hold Steady and Frank Turner; we are not afraid to wear our hearts and our influences on our sleeves,” Ryder said. Imagine a band that captures the raw energy and masculinity of Springsteen, the lyricism of Frank Turner and the working-class rock of The Living End. They say I Am The Riot is bringing back passionate anthems, big sounds, broken strings and bleeding hearts. Hearts is available from 25 April.

Local boys made good - I Am The Riot releases their debut album on Anzac Day.

MISANDRY. Bet you haven’t heard of that word before. It’s the word to describe women who hate men. Not quite as well-known as misogyny, huh? But it’s a word front and centre in this film, made by women, starring women, written by a woman, with a token male to be derided and made the object of fun. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, of course. At centre stage is the improbably named Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, known to

the fairer sex as “the impossibly hot one from Game of Thrones.” He plays Mark King - aka the only man on screen - who is a selfish, shady, philandering creep. By which I mean man. Mark has a wife - the invariably psychotic Leslie Mann - and a host of extramarital interests. Trying to keep all these balls in the air looks very much like the definition of the seventh circle of hell for most men, but Mark tries valiantly. The story takes a wildly unrealistic turn when all these shrilling harpies get together and, rather than scratching each other’s eyes out, form a

feminist lynch mob aimed at bringing Mark down. This pretence of sisterhood brings together a middle-aged female chattering class that gives this movie the audience it needs. The result is a kind of Bridesmaids-lite. It’s quite OK, but leaves you with the nagging feeling it should have been better. There’s nothing here that couldn’t be fixed with, say, a really good car chase, three shoot-outs, and the judicious application of high explosives. Other than that, the film’s only utility is as a chick flick to crank up a few brownie points with the better half. - Jason Beck

Cost vs value THERE was a time where anything from China had to be inferior to the original. And this perception in the electronics industry was manifested from opportunistic companies purchasing the labels of recognisable defunct brands and labelling budget-made products from exploitative factories. Over the past decade another revolution has happened and it is the Chinese consumer that has become as demanding if not more demanding than the western consumer. That has made this shift in the market along with the impact of market share loss from the quality brands to the “marketed engineered brands” it has forced those quality honourable companies to make significant strides to remain relevant and survivable for the future. While it’s true a number of recognisable brands have gone to the badge factories to compete on price, many other companies have structural investment alliances with quality Chinese manufacturers that have a financial vested interest in the success of those well-recognised brands we have grown fond of. Many of those brands are enjoying investment levels into research and development they

could only dream about a few years ago and certainly organically could not achieve; such a benefit comes from the thirst in China for Western designed consumer goods. The latest brand to enjoy this benefit is the German brand Loewe. This iconic company not only invented the television in 1931, they were responsible for a lot of television’s technical developments through to the current day that we all take for granted. Loewe was one of those companies we could have lost in this change from long-term products to cheap budget prod-

ucts. Loewe still hails from Germany and its main manufacturing base is still in Germany, now with a Chinese partner and the scale of the Chinese market to ensure a great future for this company. Loewe is one of those few premium brands where you can still purchase a full entertainment system that works on one remote control. The gap in price between the budget and premium has narrowed significantly. The budget marketing people tell you how good they are, and the premium brands wait for you to discover the difference.

Homes&Property Albury Wodonga

A home that ‘hits the spot!’ JUST like human relationships, homes can also make a positive lasting impression. Such is the feeling for our featured home at 3 Highland Crescent, Wodonga. As you park your car and look at the subject property you know that there is something special about to unfold. A lovely garden that has been a labour of love leads to a warm, inviting family home. As you are welcomed at the front entry you catch a glimpse of what has been and what is is about to unfold. The owners purchased the land of about 800 square metres before they arrived in Wodonga to pursue employment opportunities and to raise their family. Our vendors planned the home to cater for their future family, then called on a local builder to construct the home for them. That was the era when homes weren’t built overnight and the builder was a well-known and respected tradesman - that’s what they were called, not “tradies”. You instinctively know that this home has been cared for and not just prettied up for sale. It becomes obvious that this is a family home by the various photos of children and grandchildren strategically placed around the home. Slate floor tiles set the scene at the entry as you are led to the lounge/dining room, which is generously proportioned and heated by a gas wall fur-

nace. The carpets throughout the home are near-new and reflect the quality that pervades throughout. Glass cedar doors lead to a relaxing family room that has sunlight streaming through the double-glazed windows. One can only imagine immersing oneself in a good book, sun streaming in and the gas heater adding to the comfort on a cold winter’s day. The kitchen is an unusual shape with a small eating nook incorporated - ideal for one or two people having breakfast before heading off to work. Blackwood timber kitchen cupboards, pantry, electric stove and a dishwasher make for an easy place to prepare meals in. The kitchen overlooks the informal dining area and also accesses the outdoor living area. The master bedroom has a refurbished ensuite and walk-in robe while the other three bedrooms are each capable of holding two single beds. Like the ensuite, the bathroom has also been refurbished in very easy to live with tiles. The cedar windows have lovely leadlighting. The outdoor living area is surrounded by shrubs, hedges and plants and interconnects with the more formal living areas, is paved and has vaulted ceiling to promote air circulation. It overlooks a most delightful garden with a small pond with ornamental bridge, garden shed and rather large enclosed bird aviary.

An added bonus is a gate that allows access to a small neighbourhood park. There are many homes but this one is

something special from the moment of arrival until you have strolled the beautiful gardens. Reluctantly the vendors

are moving to be closer to family to enjoy their grandchildren, a bit of golf and maybe some travel.

Smaller homes price boom in regional Victoria REGIONAL Victoria has seen a boom in the price of smaller homes, with units and apartments recording significant price growth in the past three months. The unit and apartment median price grew by 8.2 per cent in the three months to 31 March this year, to $262,500. House prices also grew to a new median price high of $322,000, however the growth over the quarter was lower than for units, at 1.3 per cent. REIV Chief Executive Officer Enzo Raimondo said that the growth in smaller homes across the state was the highest quarterly increase in almost a decade. “Clearly units and apartments are becoming increasingly popular as home buyers in regional towns and cities look

to one and two-bedroom homes that meet their needs,” he said. “Sales of these homes were high for the quarter, with more than 500 unit and apartment sales across regional Victoria.” Mr Raimondo said the median house price of $322,000 was up from $318,000 in the final quarter of last year. Across the state, the state’s north-east was a “hot spot” with Benalla growing 11.4 per cent in the quarter to a $235,000 median, and West Wodonga recording a seven per cent growth to a median price of $283,500. In central Victoria, Creswick grew strongly, up by 8.9 per cent for the quarter to a median price of $288,500. Bendigo was the stand-out of Victoria’s major regional cities, with house price growth of 1.6 per cent for the quarter to a

median price of $325,000, with Ballarat close behind - with a rise of 1.4 per cent to a median price of $299,000. In Melbourne, median house prices grew by 3.7 per cent to $652,500, while the median price of units and apartments in Melbourne increased by 1.1 per cent to $499,000. Mr Raimondo said that while the residential property market had rebounded strongly in the past six months, it might moderate over the course of this year. “Record low interest rates have been driving property price growth to date, but any movement in the interest rate or in employment levels is likely to see a moderation in this growth,” he said.

Renovations: stay smart in current market WE ALL want our homes to be comfortable and convenient, if not the home of our dreams then at least one with the features we want and decorations to our taste. When the property market is strong, as in recent months, the temptation is to spend on improvements and renovations, assuming prices will continue to rise and money spent would be recouped if the property was sold. But, while it is always tempting to put in the latest bathroom or kitchen, it may not be the best option. Overcapitalising - spending money on a property which may not be recouped by an increase in its value - is a risk for both investors and owner occupiers. While most investors are wary about overspending and wise to avoid this trap, that is not always so with improvements on our own homes. Of course if you plan to stay there for many years, spending money which may not be recouped in the short-term is not such an issue. But we never know what the future will hold - unexpected

events may require us to sell, so it is always wise to ensure your home is not overcapitalised. The median price of a home in regional Victoria reached a record high in the last three months of 2013, up six per cent on the same quarter in 2012. It was encouraging news, but REIV predicts a slowing in property prices later this year, so it is not the time for major renovations unless you can be sure they will boost the property’s value to cover their cost and hopefully, make a profit. If you are contemplating renovations, it’s important to know your property’s current value and what it would be worth with that

work completed. A good yardstick is the local median price, which can be checked at www.reiv.com.au Within any area, the pool of buyers is only so large, and if your property is well above the median price - even if it is superior to many homes the same size - it may take longer to sell. Consult a real estate agent for an appraisal of your home and ask his or her advice about your plans - would they be a wise move, would you get that money back if you sold? If the answer is no, the time, stress and cost of renovating are best avoided.

Victorian agents add sparkle at GEM Awards FIRST National Real Estate recognised its members’ outstanding achievements at the General Excellence and Marketing (GEM) Awards last month at Grand Hyatt Melbourne. First National Real Estate is Australia’s largest independent real estate network and its gala evening celebrated the best of Victoria and Tasmania’s real estate performances over the past year, which, according to First National Real Estate Victorian Chairman, Garry Nash, required substantial effort to achieve. “While the property market showed signs of recovery last year, conditions remained far from ideal in many locations and agents needed to stay focused on systems, processes and professional development to deliver excellent results for their customers,” Mr Nash said. “The GEM Awards bring recognition to all that hard work, and the competitive spirit that is a part of daily

operations in our estate agencies.” On the night, the Top 10 Offices for the network in Victoria and Tasmania were named and included First National Real Estate Garry Nash (Wangaratta). First National Real Estate Lindellas (Box Hill) received ‘Most Energy Efficient Office of the Year’, while First National Real Estate Rayner (Bacchus Marsh) received the coveted ‘Referral Office of The Year’ award. Mr Nash says the First National GEM Awards are an important event within the real estate profession as they present an opportunity for members to come together and share their thoughts and views on the industry and events that affect them, such as the government’s recently abandoned attempt to create a national real estate licensing system and the network’s support of the Regional Victoria Living Expo.

Looking for a new family pet or best friend to love? Albury Wodonga Animal Rescue is here to help, with a variety of puppies and dogs waiting to be re-homed with a loving new owner. Most dogs are unclaimed from the Albury Pound or are surrendered by members of the public. Each dog has passed a temperament test before being placed into foster care. The adoption fee for dogs and puppies is $340 plus $40 for council registration if adopted in NSW. The fee includes a veterinary health check, microchipping, desexing, C5 vaccination, flea treatment and intestinal worming. For cats and kittens the fee is $200 which includes veterinary health check, microchipping, desexing, F4 vaccination, flea treatment and intestinal worming. Albury Wodonga Animal Rescue endeavours to carefully match dogs with their new owners to ensure dogs are placed in the best environment for their future wellbeing.

Future fund for player By KRYSTEN MANUEL THIS weekend has seen a massive outpouring of support by local footy clubs for the James McQuillan Future Fund. “There’s every chance that we could get somewhere around $15,000 in total, which would be fantastic,” Albury Tigers president Gavin Schultz said. “We haven’t got all the results in yet but all the clubs that hosted a home game elected to take up the offer of having collections at their gates and around their grounds. We’re now waiting for all those results to come in. “We know the Wangaratta Rovers raised about $2000 at the gate and with their aroundthe-ground collection that was done by the players, and then after the game the Rovers players put in $1000 themselves to make it $3000. “I’ve spoken to the Yarrawonga coach Chris Kennedy who’s collecting all their containers at the moment but he thinks there should be at least $4000 from down there. “We’re yet to count Wodonga and Corowa’s and we’ve also heard Myrtleford had a ripper day so there’s some good funds coming through from there as well.” Albury Tigers player James McQuillan remains in the spinal unit at the Austin Hospital where he continues to receive treatment for injuries sustained after the round one clash with Yarrawonga.

“

The family is overwhelmed by the amount of support across the region from the community, sporting clubs, players and friends… Paul Joss

Yarrawonga coach Chris Kennedy says Yarrawonga is committed to doing what it can to support the Albury footballer. “The two clubs that were involved in it, you do feel part of it, along with Echuca (James’s home football club) and we want to make sure we’re involved.” Albury Tigers Club vicepresident and player welfare manager Paul Joss says the support shown for James is greatly appreciated. “The family is overwhelmed by the amount of support across the region from the community, sporting clubs, players and friends. “As fund-raising continues to gain momentum for James, we hope to make further announcements in the coming weeks.” Mr Schultz says while the support given by the community in general has been strong, it will be a long road for James and his family. “The groundswell of support has been amazing from all different sectors - football clubs

to local hotels to cafes, it’s just been amazing,” he said. “The McQuillan family are just so humbled when they hear of what’s happening out there in relation to support and fundraising for them. “But at the end of the day this is only the start. We have a long road ahead of us and that’s why it’s called the future fund because we are here to support James’s future. “There’s going to be a long campaign and people ask ‘how much money are you trying to raise?’ “Well at the end of the day no amount of money will be enough, so we’ll just keep raising money.” The SS&A Ovens and Murray Football Netball League have also extended an offer to all clubs who want to participate by ensuring fund-raising buckets are made available at their games. Mr Schultz would like to extend the offer to businesses who would like to get involved to contact him on 0417 125 724 or the club on 02 6021 1180.

Spirit of our great contest Simon

Says with SIMON CORR THE Anzac Spirit has always been about sacrificing yourself for the benefit of your family, your mates and your country, no matter what the opponent or outcome. It’s about giving your all and never giving in. It’s fair to say as a nation we have tried to mirror this very approach since our ancestors displayed it when they bravely fought for our future. However it is on our sporting fields each and every weekend that I believe the Anzac spirit is truly replicated. Young athletes linked by a common cause desperate to do what it takes for each other to get the winning result, and it is because of this that we have found sporting contests one of the greatest places to honour the Anzacs. The ramifications of the battle starkly differ but sport has the capacity to unite like nothing else I have seen. The Anzacs will be honoured this Friday at three games in Ovens and Murray Football and Netball League. Traditional rivals Albury and North Albury will battle it out at Bunton Park, across the river hometown rivals Wodonga and Raiders will lock horns as will Myrtleford and Wangaratta up in the Alpine Valley. All teams will draw something from the young Anzacs in their preparation. With the utmost respect comparison’s will be made of going to war with each other, doing yourself and your family proud, or even making sacrifices. However we are all aware nothing can compare to what those brave young men and women endured for us. It is because of their commitment to this great country that we are able to enjoy our great game, and most importantly honour them. And that is why on this Anzac day and every one to follow, when we pull on a jumper or buy a can of beer at the bar, we remember to say “Lest we forget.” North Albury will take two weeks of strong

form into their Anzac Day clash with the Tigers. The enthusiasm and attitude of the young Hoppers have seen them win many admirers on the way. This contest however will give North Albury supporters a true indication of where they are at. Their opponent is a perennial powerhouse of the competition who this season look as hungry for success as I have ever seen them. They are experienced and strong right across the park, and are relentless and uncompromising in their attack on the footy. It will be great for the young North players to compete against a team they will strive to become… it may just not feel like it at the time. The Wodonga Raiders will go into their derby with Wodonga as favourites and quite rightly so. Key forward Dean Limbach is on fire up forward with nine goals from two hit-outs. If not for an undermanned bench against Corowa they could well be undefeated at this stage. Their opponents Wodonga have been severely hit by the injury stick and face a long year if they don’t find something quick. Wangaratta last week experienced the wrath of the reigning Premiers, the Pigeons. They were mauled by 119 points and currently sit at the bottom of the ladder. To many the Magpies were expected to be final-five contenders and should they fail to defeat Myrtleford on Friday their season is done. In the only Saturday contest, the Wangaratta Rovers will face ladder leaders in Lavington at home. The Panthers got key forwards Adam Prior and Justin Koschitzke to fire last week as they kicked 10 goals between them. They were also miserly in defence allowing their opponents just three goals for the day. The Rovers had a tough game last week against Albury, and should brace themselves for the same. On Sunday the un-defeated Corowa will take on Yarrawonga. Corowa ALBURY v North Albury definitely are poised Wodonga v WODONGA RAIDERS to play finals this Myrtleford v WANGARATTA year, and will get a first-hand look at Wang Rovers v LAVINGTON one of the teams to Corowa v YARRAWONGA beat.
