Core Lessons After 40 Years of Priestly Ministry
I am writing this while at our annual Spring Assembly of Clergy, and after being honored on Monday evening for 40 years of service to this Archdiocese alongside my classmates (See picture below). And, in celebrating 40 years of ordained ministry, I thought I’d share some of the valuable lessons I’ve learned along the way.
Forty years of priesthood tends to teach lessons that are less about mastering ministry and more about being mastered by grace. After four decades, most priests describe a shift from doing to being, from certainty to humility, from speaking for God to listening for God in places they never expected. Below are but a few of the many insights I have gained while on this incredible and blessed journey.
1. God works far more through weakness than strength: The early years often revolve around competence, energy, and ideals. The later years reveal something quieter… grace moves most freely through the cracks. Moments of exhaustion, failure, or
at a bedside. A listening ear in the confessional. A quiet visit after a tragedy. Presence out lives eloquence.
3. The sacraments shape the priests as much as much as the priest administers them: Celebrating thousands of Masses and absolutions doesn’t dull their meaning… it deepens it. The Eucharist slowly forms his heart into gratitude. Confession teaches him mercy by requiring him to give it. And anointing the sick teaches him to face his own mortality with hope. The sacraments become a lifelong school of holiness.
4. Parish life is messy, beautiful, and always surprising: Forty years brings:
-Conflicts that seemed impossible but eventually healed
-Parishioners who became unexpected teachers
-Moments of heartbreak
-Moments of joy that felt like glimpses of heaven
5. Prayer changes, because the relationship changes: Early prayer can be full of words, plans, and petitions. Later prayer becomes quieter, simpler, more like companionship. It becomes less “Lord, help me do this” and more “Lord, stay with me as I walk.” Silence becomes a friend rather than a challenge.
These are but a few of the many lessons I have learned along the way. There are many more to come… perhaps I will share them during my homily at the actual Jubilee here at St. Anthony . There will be a Mass of Thanksgiving at 5 pm, followed by a reception in our Parish Life Center. Join us as we celebrate 60 years of priesthood for Fr. Joe Hornacek, 50 years for Fr. Ken Knippel, and 40 years for myself. We’d love to pray and celebrate with you! All are welcome! I look forward to more years to come and the new lessons that lie ahead!

On April 28 and 29, Fr. Ted Lawson and the Redemptorist Retreat Center hosted an important meeting determining the direction for the Redemptorists in the United States. They voted to close the Denver Province and form a new province combining all of the United States, Mexico, and part of Canada into one new province. The Choir joined them both days, supporting their liturgies by singing at Masses, enhancing their music and prayer as they reflected on the future of their ministry. Their presence supported the significance of these critical times of prayer for the Redemptorists. Fr. Ted said nothing is better than the songs and smiles of the people from St. Anthony's. Thanks to members of the Choir for supporting our reputation as faith -filled ministers in the area.

April Blood Drive Results
A huge thank you to all the donors who came out Saturday, April 25 at St. Anthony on the Lake Blood Drive. We had 17 donors who provided 51 blood products for patients! Thanks also goes out to our many volunteers who helped out. Mark your calendars for our next blood drive on Saturday, August 29.
The Waukesha Chapter of Wisconsin Right to Life will be hosting an information booth at the Waukesha County Fair, Wednesday, July 15 through Sunday, July 19. Our Respect Life Committee is looking for volunteers to work in pairs at the booth for three -hour shifts. To help, please contact Phil Heinle at qualityheinle@gmail.com.
In October we will be running the "Baby Bottle" campaign. There will be baby bottles in the Gathering Space to take home and collect monetary donations for Life's Connection.

Medical Volunteers Needed at People’s Table in Milwaukee
People's Table food pantry is in need of additional hygiene area volunteers, specifically those with a medical background (i.e., RN, MD, PA, Pharmacist).
Volunteers work Tuesday, 12 to 2:30 pm, or Wednesday, 3:30 to 6 pm stocking hygiene area before the pantry opens, helping clients select hygiene items, and providing feminine hygiene, diapers & formula. Math Resource (Gr. 4 & 5)
As we enter the home stretch of the school year, all math classes have officially completed their final MAP testing this past week. This helps provide a valuable snapshot of each student’s growth over the course of the year and helps guide the final weeks of instruction.
In 6th grade, students are wrapping up their individualized plans that focus on their mathematical needs for reviewing 6th grade concepts to ensure they leave 6th grade feeling confident in their mathematical abilities and skills, heading into the summer and into 7th grade. To end the year a strong and engaging note, students have also begun working on designing their dream playground project. In groups, students will be creating their own business from the ground up, which requires them to research ideas, plan logistics, and present their proposals to the “board of directors,”

further strengthening their problem -solving and communication skills. This project allows students to incorporate a wide range of mathematical skills such as fractions, decimals, ratios, graphing, dimensions, area and budgeting into a creative and meaningful task.
In 7th grade, students are preparing for their cumulative assessments that will measure their understanding of all the concepts learned throughout the year. These assessments are an important step in demonstrating their readiness for Algebra next year. To support this, we have been working in small groups, where students focus on specific skills they have identified as areas for growth, helping them build both confidence and mastery of the 7th grade concepts.
Meanwhile, 8th grade students are entering the final phase of the year by reviewing key concepts and solidifying their understanding of the material. My goal is to ensure that each student feels well prepared and confident in their mathematical skills and abilities as they take the next step into high school.
