The Feast of the Holy Family

Though it was not perfect by any means, my father instilled in us that we had hit the jackpot being part of our big family of Italian/ Irish/Catholic heritage. (Both the truth and humor of his viewpoint did not escape the seven of us children - that to him, these were all inheritances from our genetics.)
The Church calls the family “the domestic church” and says that “family is the school of love.” My family of origin, the “Troy” family, was the blessing my dad envisioned and a precious inheritance. It was in every sense a “school of love.” I dearly hope my children and grandchildren will one day say my husband and I provided “a school of love” for them. Beyond or because of this, the topic of “family as the school of love and how faith is passed on generationally” has been my area of research for several decades. The findings of multiple good studies are consistent and compelling that the most powerful influence in what forms us religiously and our deepest beliefs and values in life - is our family. From my lived experience and my study, I have come to believe these four things about the family: • Families were created to teach us about God and show us who God is • Families are complicated • Families are full of grace • Our family is the foundation on which we build life
upon or what we spend our life healing from The Holy Family was not in any research studies. They were divinely designed. Everything that we know about the Holy Family we know from Sacred Scripture. There is much to contemplate in the fact that God chose to be revealed in human history as a vulnerable infant in the care of a teenage mother and stepfather, in life circumstances of poverty and homeless. God’s revelation in the Incarnation through the birth of Jesus in the Holy Family is such a mystery as measured by our current cultural values. What a lesson in love God has given us.
The family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, that we celebrate on the Feast of the Holy Family are exemplars of family that: • •
Teach us about God Were certainly a complicated family

No doubt - were full of grace And they are the family we can most emulate to build a foundation in our life of faithfulness, trust in God, loyalty to each other and holding hope in facing the unknown In Pope Francis’ Exhortation on the family, Amoris Laetitia (The Joy of Love) he says: “Every family should look to the icon of the Holy Family… Its daily life had its share of burdens and even nightmares... Like Mary, they (today’s families) are asked to face their family’s challenges with courage and serenity, in good times and bad, and to keep in their heart the great things which God has done… Let us make this journey as families, let us keep walking together. What we have been promised is greater than we can imagine. May we never lose heart because of our limitations or ever stop seeking that fullness of love and communion which God holds out before us.”
As we approach this new year in our lives, may we look to the Holy Family to guide, strengthen, and inspire us to make our homes and our parish “a school of love.” May you be blessed by this great inheritance from God. Prayer to the Holy Family by Pope Francis Jesus, Mary and Joseph, in you we contemplate the splendor of true love; to you we turn with trust. Holy Family of Nazareth, grant that our families too may be places of communion and prayer, authentic schools of the Gospel and small domestic churches. Holy Family of Nazareth, may families never again experience violence, rejection and division; may all who have been hurt or scandalized find ready comfort and healing. Holy Family of Nazareth, make us once more mindful of the sacredness and inviolability of the family, and its beauty in God’s plan. Jesus, Mary and Joseph, graciously hear our prayer. Liturgical Ministers Needed We’re coming up to one of the busiest times of the year! Lectors, Servers, and Eucharistic Ministers are needed at all Masses on Christmas Eve as well as Christmas Day. Volunteers Needed: New Ministry As our communion ministry to the homebound grows, volunteers are needed to help distribute pyxes to parishioners before all the Masses. A pyx is a small container that holds the Holy Eucharist during transport. Volunteers will help a parishioner select a pyx, sign it out, and also give them a booklet with instructions on taking communion to the homebound. The volunteers will also collect the used pyx from the week before for purification. The speaker is Darryl Morin, a member of St. Mary Catholic Faith Community in Hales Corners. Through this informed discussion and meaningful reflection, participants will gain a deeper understanding of the intersection between faith, policy, and the human experience of migration. Opening the Door This Advent
5K spent time preparing for the birth of Jesus in December. We read about the Christmas story and talked about how God loves us so much that He gave us the gift of Jesus. We also thought about how much Jesus loves us. In addition, we learned about the Advent wreath and how Advent is a time to prepare ourselves for the birth of Jesus.
5K spread joy this Advent season by singing for the Young at Heart. We made placemats and little cards for their Christmas luncheon. The kids did a wonderful job singing! We hope that you feel the joy of Christmas this year as you celebrate the birth of our Savior!
