The Orton-Gillingham Approach is a direct, explicit, multisensory, structured, sequential, diagnostic, and prescriptive way to teach literacy when reading, writing, and spelling does not come easily to individuals, such as those with dyslexia. Over the summer, Orton Gillingham is provided at the Lower School level, and in both small group and individualized settings, depending on student need and scheduling availability during the summer. Sessions will be one hour and available to schedule at times that work for the family and the interventionist. If your child is at camp here, we are happy to coordinate intervention services during their camp day so you don’t have to make another trip!

Through interactive games, songs, stories, and hands-on activities, children will strengthen key phonological awareness skills, begin making meaningful letter-sound connections, and get their first introduction to high-frequency words they’ll encounter in early reading. Along the way, students will listen to and explore a wide variety of stories, sparking curiosity and building a lifelong love of books. Help your child start the school year feeling confident, prepared, and excited about reading with an online class that they can access regardless of where your summer takes you. This small-group summer program is designed for rising Upper School students who have been assigned summer reading books. Together, students will read, discuss, and write about their assigned texts in a supportive and engaging environment. During each session, students will practice key middle school skills such as identifying themes, analyzing characters, participating in thoughtful discussions, and developing clear written responses. The group will also focus on strategies for annotating texts, organizing ideas, and crafting strong paragraphs. In addition to strengthening reading comprehension and writing, the group helps students build confidence sharing their ideas, asking questions, and engaging with literature alongside peers. By the end of the two week program, students will not only have made meaningful progress on their summer reading but will also feel better prepared for the expectations of Upper School Language Arts classes at St. Anne’s School. This is a great way to turn summer reading from a solitary task into an interactive experience that builds skills and prevents the “summer slide.”
