Dear St. Anne Families and Friends, On the eve of St. Anne Catholic School’s 90th birthday, Team St. Anne planned a year of learning like no other in its history. Over the summer, faculty and staff set in motion a comprehensive return to learning plan that addressed campus health and safety measures, virtual classrooms, social-emotional learning, and fellowship building. The school year began with on-line instruction, where teachers pioneered a remote classroom experience and students courageously approached a new learning style. As St. Anne transitioned to in-person learning, the physical campus transformed for safety. Outdoor seating options for learning and eating were created. Mobile student-friendly hand washing stations were placed at strategic locations throughout campus. Classrooms were retrofitted to be in compliance with recommended safety guidelines. Desk shields, Covid signage, thousands of medical-grade face shields and gloves, gallons upon gallons of hand sanitizer, and ample cleaners and sanitizer were purchased to protect over 500 students, faculty, and staff.

The Technology Department jumped into action to ensure that teachers were equipped with the necessary tools to enhance learning with grade-specific enrichment and IXL programs.
First Communion celebration, National Junior Honor Society induction, community service drives, and participation in spring sports. The year ended with the graduation Mass of 47 eighth graders, who will go on to represent St. Anne at Houston’s finest high schools, including Strake Jesuit, St. Thomas, Incarnate Word, St. Agnes, St. Pius, Duchesne, Episcopal, Carnegie Vanguard, Lamar, HSPVA, the Energy Institute, Memorial, and Stratford. The Annual Report’s cover is composed of photos from throughout the year. Together these images make up a community bound by generosity, grace, and gratitude; a hallmark of the St. Anne community. Look closely and you may see your reflection in one of the images. With your help, St. Anne thrived in the midst of great challenges. God bless St. Anne now and for 90 more years!

Notes: (1) Total actual tuition and fees paid directly by the families of the students. The tuition revenue has been reduced by grants, scholarships, and all applicable tuition discounts (e.g. multi-child). (2) The school’s Payroll Protection Program loan was forgiven in full in early 2021. This was a one-time event and the school will need fundraising and other event revenues to fill the gap going forward. (3) Capital spending includes larger scale capital costs and investments undertaken by the school over time to enhance the school’s physical facilities and learning environment (e.g. classroom refurbishment, technology investments, roof replacement, etc.). 2019-2020 included an additional $100,000 in expenses associated with audio and visual equipment for the new gym. Expenses in excess of the available current year’s operating revenues are covered by accumulated reserves from previous years.

Because of you, the campaign exceeded all expectations. During a time that challenged us all, you shared your blessings by giving generously to the Annual Fund.
Thank you for saying YES! to St. Anne The faculty and staff, as well as PTO and School Boards, kicked off the campaign with a 100% participation rate. Giving Day, celebrated during Catholic Schools Week, was a spirited day of Shamrock pride that promoted the importance of the Annual Fund on campus. Thanks to the National Junior Honor Society, who sponsored a student-led Pass the Basket campaign, even St. Anne’s beloved students contributed over $4,500 to the campaign. This vote of confidence inspired the entire community-parents, grandparents, parishioners, and supporters- to say YES! To the Annual Fund.

STEPS FOR STUDENTS On your mark, get set...STEP FOR STUDENTS! Team St. Anne crossed the finish line together for the largest fundraising event in the Archdiocese of GalvestonHouston. Steps for Students provides a platform for 59 Catholic school communities to raise funds for their own specific needs. For St. Anne, Steps For Students supports the Annual Fund, which translates to tangible classroom
enhancements and experiences for our students like innovative technology, continued professional development, and arts enrichment. This year St. Anne raised $1,667.38 and a whole lot of spirit! With the entire school racing to the finish line on the recently completed track, St. Anne stepped lively all in support of the blessing of Catholic education!

HAPPY 90TH BIRTHDAY ST. ANNE! In 1930, the area surrounding St. Anne Catholic School was dotted with pastures, roaming cattle, and clapboard houses. 90 years later, St. Anne shines as a beacon of goodness, discipline, and knowledge at the corner of a bustling intersection in one of the most diverse cities in the country. The school is a microcosm of the city of Houston that celebrates a diverse community of learners and believers who come from all over Houston to call St. Anne home. St. Anne’s history begins in 1924, when Bishop Christopher E. Byrne, of the Diocese of Galveston-Houston, asked Reverend John J. O’Reilley to find a suitable location for a new church, which would accommodate Houston’s westward growth. The new parish would be named for St. Anne, the mother of the Blessed Virgin. Land at the intersection of two dirt roads, McDuffie and Westheimer, was located, and an abandoned four-room farmhouse became the first home of St. Anne Catholic Community. In May of 1928, Bishop Byrne asked the Basilian Fathers to take charge of the growing parish. Having previously opened St. Thomas College, now St. Thomas High School, the Basilian Fathers sought to apply their cornerstone, “Teach me Goodness, Discipline and Knowledge,” to the development of the burgeoning parish and to the addition of a school. In 1930, the school opened under the direction of five sisters of Divine Providence from Our Lady of the Lake Convent. St. Anne was the first Catholic school in the Diocese of Galveston-Houston to be accredited and continues serving Houston as a leader in Catholic education. While St. Anne’s birthday celebrations were canceled due to the global pandemic, we honor the school’s 90 year legacy everyday.

TEACHER SPOTLIGHT: MR. DARRELL BECK MR. DARRELL BECK St. Anne Teacher 23 Years of Service
“I give because the St. Anne Community is so supportive and generous. Therefore, I want to give to future scholars yet unborn. Serving in my 23rd year, I am grateful for the opportunity to have taught over a thousand scholars during my tenure here. The administration, faculty and staff, scholars, and their parents have been so supportive, kind, and thoughtful. They have truly been a blessing. Inspired by a love for his students and his craft, Mr. Darrell Beck has served St. Anne as a beloved teacher, friend, and mentor for over 23 years. In 2020, Mr. Beck announced his retirement from teaching. As a sixth generation Texan, Beck’s paternal family was brought over to the Republic of Texas in 1840 by Spearman Holland. He is a proud descendant of Thomas Beck of Kentucky, who was the first African American elected to the Texas House of Representatives in 1874. He was raised in Houston’s historic First Ward, attended Brock Elementary School and graduated from Jesse H. Jones High School. He earned his undergraduate degree from Southern Methodist University and Juris Doctor from The Thurgood Marshall School of Law at Texas Southern University. Mr. Beck began his professional career at Joskes in their management program and later worked in Austin, Texas under Governor Mack White’s administration. In 1998, Mr. Beck began his career at St. Anne Catholic School teaching Math, Science, and Social Studies. To highlight his achievements in education, Mr. Beck received an Outstanding Educator Award from the College of Education and Human Development at Texas A&M University.

A true Historian, Mr. Beck has a vast collection of Houston and African American memorabilia that has been exhibited in several Houston libraries and the Houston Heritage Society - where many St. Anne students provided narratives describing each item on display. With a passionate commitment to teaching, it comes as no surprise that Mr. Beck comes from a long line of educators; many of 13

which have schools and libraries named in their honor. As a consummate historian, Mr. Beck has conducted extensive research on his family, Houston, and African American history, which he joyfully shared in his classroom museum. He credits his interest in teaching History to his nineth grade teacher, Mrs. Ruby Poindexter. Mrs. Poindexter is in her 90s now, and Mr. Beck continues to keep in contact with her through regular phone calls, birthday and holiday greeting cards! Mr. Beck is a member of The Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church, where he sings in The Mighty Men of Wheeler Choir. Mr. Beck’s favorite song is, ‘Only what you do for Christ will Last!’ He is also a member of the Men’s Sunday School class, and his favorite scripture is Jeremiah 29:11: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” On August 14th, students and families representing every year Mr. Beck taught at St. Anne gathered to celebrate Mr. Beck’s retirement in the Budinger Gymnasium. While St. Anne will miss him dearly, he’s not going too far...Mr. Beck will be joining the St. Anne Highlight’s After School program!

COMMUNITY & ALUMNI NOTES CLASS OF 1962 Louis Le Blanc writes that he’s retired six years from a 36 year career as a university professor. He currently resides in Rome, Georgia, and enjoys cooking and eating. Louis recently donated a treasure trove of St. Anne memorabilia to the St. Anne archives. CLASS OF 1967 Louis Kirchem is retired and living in Houston. CLASS OF 1978 Chevy Humphrey was named President and CEO of the Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago. Humphrey will be the first woman and Black American to lead The Museum. Shawn Lacagnina was welcomed by FocalPoint Business Coaching as a Certified Business Coaching professional. CLASS OF 1979 Rawle Andrews Jr., Esq., the regional vice president for AARP’s State and National Group, was named PresidentElect of the Bar Association of the District of Columbia and the Executive Director of the American Psychiatric Associaltion Foundation. CLASS OF 1983 Peter Fitzgerald sends his best wishes and says he has such fond memories of the three years at St. Anne (6th-8th grades). Those years were led by Ms. Hogan, principal, and teachers, Ms. O’Rourke, Ms. Reynolds, Ms. Anthony, Ms. Godwin, Ms. Washam, Ms. Wozinsky, and Coach Reynosa. After St. Anne, he graduated from Lamar High School, The University of Texas at Austin with a BA in American Studies, and Vanderbilt University with an MBA. Fitzgerald lives with his family in central Mexico. CLASS OF 2003 Scott Terry is currently an active duty Marine, with recent assignments with the Special Operations Joint Task Force in Iraq/Syria and the Marine Corp Training/Education Command in 29 Palms, California.

CLASS OF 2009 Derrick Verdun, a South Texas College of Law graduate, was admitted to the Bar. CLASS OF 2010 Daniel Clay, zoomed with the St. Anne 8th graders to chat about career opportunities influenced by his favorite subject: history.
“Thanks to Ms. Soderman’s class, I knew that I wanted to do something with history when I grew up.” Today, Daniel serves as a Research Associate, U.S. Foreign Policy at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York. He advised students to read the newspaper, work hard, and listen to your teachers!
CLASS OF 2013 Xandra Christine Meneses, a magna cum laude St. Agnes alumna and Texas A&M Dean’s List graduate (2021), was accepted to Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine. Evan Harris, a Strake Jesuit alum, graduated from the United State Military Academy at Westpoint as an Army Officer, 2nd Lieutenant. He majored in mechanical engineering and minored in aeronautics Haley Turner, graduated from Baylor, with a major in applied sciences and minor in biology. She will continue pursuing her dream to be a family medicine doctor at the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine (TCOM) in Fort Worth starting in July! CLASS OF 2014 Miguel Soto, writes to say he just ordered his Aggie Ring! WHOOP! CLASS OF 2017 Ramsey Ruffeno, graduated from Duchesne Academy and will attend the University of Texas. Jonathan Adams, graduated from TMI EpiscopalSan Antonio as a National Merit Commended Scholar and a member of the 2021 Boys Soccer Tapps State Champions. He will attend Southern Methodist University. He says, “St. Anne provided me with a
wonderful opportunity to grow in my belief in God as well as the foundation, support, and belief in myself to succeed and thrive.” Max Merrill signed with the University of Texas Football team, where he will attend in the fall. William Holt, graduated from Strake Jesuit and will attend Texas A&M University. Khalil Saldivar, graduated from Strake Jesuit, where he served as the wrestling team captain, was Eagle Scout, and Chief Altar Server at Saint Anne. He will attend Luther College on a wrestling scholarship. Patrick Welch, graduated from St. Thomas and will attend Texas A&M University. He was an Eagle Scout, TAPPS Academic All-State Football, 2nd Team All District Defensive Line, Eagle Guard. Christian Martinez, graduated from Strake Jesuit and will attend Rice University as a finance major. Kendall Harris, graduated from St. Agnes as an honor student and will attend Coastal Carolina University to play D1 volleyball. Juliette Billings, graduated from Incarnate Word Academy as the Valedictorian and will attend Carnegie Mellon University. Jacob Harris, graduated from Strake Jesuit as an Honor graduate and will attend Georgia Tech majoring in physics.

“We are thankful that our children formed deep friendships, learned how to be contributing members of a community and explored a wide variety of interests while at St. Anne. Their well rounded formation at St. Anne was a big part of the strong foundation that has helped them succeed in High School. We are also thankful for the St. Anne parent, parish, faculty and staff community. We will never forget the outpouring of love and support from the community when I faced a cancer diagnosis and treatment. Prayers, meals, errands, carpools and chemo-buddies for me...but most important, a loving, supporting, compassionate, steady faculty and staff for my children.” Andres Del Olmo, graduated from Strake Jesuit with second Highest Academic Honors, an AP Scholar Award, member of the National Honor Society and cross country team. He will attend Colorado School of Mines and major in mechanical engineering Kaleb Williams, graduated from St. Thomas and will attend the University of Texas-Arlington and major in civil engineering. Brisa Carroll, graduated from St. Agnes and will attend the University of Oklahoma. She will major in public health in the pre-med track. CLASS OF 2019 Monica Orozco, a St. Agnes student, was recognized by the City of Houston for her incredible work organizing a composting drop-off program as part of her Girl Scout Gold Award Project. Because of her efforts, the City has plans to run 3 pilot programs!

STAFF Danielle Aleman, Director of Advancement, completed the Latino Educator and Administrator Development Program (LEAD), a year-long fellowship program, in collaboration with the National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA) and University of Notre Dame Alliance for Catholic Education (ACE). The LEAD program is designed to invite, advance, and retain Latino educators and administrators in Catholic schools, as well as develop a better understanding of the opportunities and challenges that exist in this landscape.
