The St. Anne Catholic School 2021-2022 End of Year Survey was designed to capture parent satisfaction and input over the academic year. Parent feedback on all facets of campus life provides valuable information for strategic planning purposes and overall enhancement of a St. Anne academic experience. The survey consisted of 58 questions and covered: Overall school satisfaction Catholic Identity Academics Athletics Program Lunch Program Highlights! Before/After Care Program Culture and Community Communications Each focus area includes quantitative feedback (a numerical rating for each indicator) and qualitative feedback (comments and suggestions related to the focus area). Qualitative feedback was reviewed and sorted thematically to provide an objective and accurate summary. Not all comments were included. Feedback that was specific to a particular teacher or staff member was addressed at the administrative level.

Proposed Next Steps
The primary objective for the St. Anne Catholic School Advisory Council during the 2022-2023 school year is to collaborate and form the School’s five year strategic plan. The analyzed data will be of great importance to confirm current initiatives and to inspire strategic growth efforts.

Overall Assessments What could St. Anne do to increase satisfaction? “St Anne's involvement in the overall spiritual, physical, intellectual and moral development of our children is commendable!” “Academics: Given the realities of pandemic learning loss, a more robust learning resource center would be very helpful, particularly with math skills. Having teachers with an expertise in reading and math interventions could make such a huge difference for struggling students. CoCurriculars: It seems like some classes really miss out on the co-curriculars if they are scheduled for Mondays and/or Fridays (when school is more likely to be closed). It would be great to have an opportunity to make up those missed classes.” “Additional fine arts (drama, more music options, higher level art options for middle school), consider charging more for sports transportation.”
Overall Assessments What could St. Anne do to increase satisfaction? “The academics could be a bit more challenging or have advance programs for kids in different areas. The school sponsored sports need major changes, the facilities are great but the children can barely use them for practice. There could be more support for sports in general.” “I know it is more work for teachers but an end of year conference might be nice. This would allow parents to know what to work on during the summer. Education has to happen at home too, so it might be a nice way for the school to partner with the parents. I am thinking for early childhood for reading specific...parents have to read work on sight words etc. during the summer, and most parents don’t know where to begin. Including myself=)) just a suggestion.” “I think the school has its focus on religion and education well defined. The school could improve with extracurricular activities offered during and after school. I think it should also held students accountable for misbehaving in class and implement the school policies for specific conduct issues.”

Academics What could St. Anne do to improve your child's academic experience? “I the use of technology for learning and the fact that they use google classroom has made them more accountable and responsible for their own work. It is better to let the kids advocate for themselves and St. Anne's has done well pushing them in that direction." “More classical literature exposure at all grade levels. Adding more fine arts-band, theater, choir." “As stated previously more frequent and timely communication from faculty about students performance, needs, etc. Way to much reliance on technology for communication and some to the homework, coursework gave the appearance of indifference."" “Teachers could make more use of local resources such as Science and Art museums when appropriate for supplementing lessons. "
Academics What could St. Anne do to improve your child's academic experience? “More applicable approaches to some of the differences in ways boys and girls academic development takes place. More onsite academic enrichment. Better information sharing and communication protocols for “non traditional” parenting/household situations (divorce, etc.) Better surveillance for academic problems and response/recovery from poor performance and challenges." “Math lesson examples: One evening as my child was doing math homework, she was having challenges with subtraction. As I was trying to help her she mentioned “that's not how we did it." Although we got through it together, it would be nice to have examples of the exact methods they were taught, on the top of the homework page, or referenced somewhere, so that I could help her in the way she was originally taught in the classroom. Language Arts: The WITS program is absolutely amazing and so valuable to our child. We are a big fan."
Academics What could St. Anne do to improve your child's academic experience? “Thank you for bringing back field trips. It enriches their education. Feel free to schedule more. Houston has too much to experience and learn. Hands on is great!" “In regards to communication, I have struggled with understanding the written communication from teachers on several occasions. I worry that when there are communication challenges from teachers with parents, that isn't effective modeling and teaching on how to communicate for the students. In regards to homework and studying, I would like to see the teachers doing more to teach the kids HOW to do homework and study - (ex, where to do? when to do it? what to do to study spelling words?) and encourage them to do it on their own and make it fun. "

Athletics What could St. Anne do to improve your child's experience in sports/athletics? “St Anne has excellent sports/athletic programs that met my child's needs." “Better organization, more timely communication, professional coaches” “Increase sports options (rugby, football, golf, baseball), develop younger grades with real coaches, fix basketball goals to be adjustable, and water fields more frequently.” “Provide more clinics, athletic opportunities for the children in elementary school. The UCAL athletic program is completely parent run. It would nice to have some more school involvement in the extra-curricular athletic development of the kids.” “Consider charging more for sports to add transportation to games/events”
Athletics What could St. Anne do to improve your child's experience in sports/athletics? “The UCAL sports program struggles to get time using the facilities for practice and sometimes end up practicing at local parks. It would be nice to have more accessibility and support from the school for the children to use the facilities for practice.” “Saint Anne needs to decide if it wants to be competitive or all inclusive. It seems to straddle the line… Participation sports are great but for those that want to be competitive, higher level or extra coaching weather through parents or staff would benefit. Also included athletic training such as weights and skill teaching could bring additional participation from the quality students who do not play because of the perceived lack of being a competitive sport. The team that have success generally have quality enthusiastic players especially in junior high.” “I am very appreciative that SACS has expanded its sports opportunity. Our child has definitely taken advantage. Some may want SACS to be more competitive, but we are comfortable with the more relaxed atmosphere.”

Lunch Program What could St. Anne do to improve your child's experience in sports/athletics? “Possible other options for older students (ala carte) compared to more regimented offerings for younger students” “Nothing really. The cafeteria provider this past year was amazing. My children loved the food, and the online ordering system was easy to use. I hope they come back next year!” “Communication was so hard to follow. If they could have let us just purchase a year long package or make it so that we didn’t have to go in monthly but only on certain days that never made sense. I missed ordering quite a few times but also tried to go in and order many times but was shut out. Please make ordering easier. Also, it didn’t seem to be very healthy - more fresh fruit and veggies would be nice.” “Expand the hot lunch offerings instead of providing the same meals regularly. Change the items that are offered daily to include a salad /soup or baked potato bar.”

What could St. Anne do to improve your child's Highlights! experience? “Allow middle school to do their homework as a priority before outside time - i.e. quick snack, homework then outside time as most middle school kids have outside activities and need the time in Highlights to get their work done. 5/6th grade continue to use the computer lab since they aren't allowed to bring home Chromebook. When all homework is on Chromebook, they can't do any homework during Highlights.” “We took advantage at the end of the school year and my daughter was extremely happy with the teachers and her school mates. She was able to complete her homework there, leaving the afternoon for the family. Really well run! Congrats. Yes, maybe some extra-curricular activities will be good and convenient for the parents.”
Highlights! What could St. Anne do to improve your child's Highlights! experience? “It would be great to get an activity done in the morning or give the kids an opportunity to get energy out. I think it could help improve focus. I'd drop off earlier if that were an option. Again, more diverse activities in the afternoon -sports, music, arts, and tech.” “It would be helpful if they had more time to access their Chromebooks for assignments. I would also be interested in external provider activities.” “Offering the above suggested activities would be wonderful, so long as they were inclusive of the little ones in pre-k. I would also love if this could be a time for providers to come to the school to do apts like speech therapy."

Culture & Community What could St. Anne do to improve your child's wellbeing at school? “I think there should be 2-3 counselors who specialize in each age group. More interaction, guidance and lessons on age appropriate topics-bullying, anxiety, depression, how to get help and talk to parents when something is wrong. More school wide presentations to the kids with appropriate speakers that are engaging and informative. Buddy systems between upper and lower grades we it’s more frequent interaction.” “Students should be introduced to social emotional learning SEL Students should feel confident about contacting the person in charge of helping students with any non-academic concern. Students feel afraid per my own child and many other parents’ opinions.” “I would love to see more programs led by the counselor that help kids navigate friendships and social situations, such as how to deal when your friend isn't being a good friend. Or how to be an advocate for yourself or friends and how to stand up for yourself/others.”
Culture & Community What could St. Anne do to improve your child's wellbeing at school? “More accessible tutoring and enrichment activities that are schoolsupported would improve intellectual achievement and help likeminded students socialize more.” “The school does a tremendous job in looking after the child as an individual. The only thing I can suggest is a deeper dive into the personalities of each child, esp the 7th and 8th graders. I saw a tremendous change in mine and others during that time. Their social networking can make them feel forced to either be part of something or isolated. It would be good, esp in these fast changing times, to keep close watch on all adolescents, as it seems to be a tremendously challenging time to be growing up.” “The school does a great job with academics and community. It's addressing the whole being that needs focus.” “I agree that we approach discipline in a positive manner. However, I feel like we need to do a better job in being firm yet kind and enforcing high standards of behavior. Regarding our cultural background, I do not know whether we fit the SACS norm. That is one reason I'm moving my son. I do not know that we have a solid peer group to anchor to.”

Communication What could St. Anne do to improve communication with your family/child? “St Anne effectively communicates events/issues in a timely manner and through various social media.” “I think it would be very beneficial for students in kinder and below to receive the old fashion paper note to take home with weekly reminders and special dates. We are all so blessed with technology but our emails often are read and put aside or missed with all other technology overload and communication. I think for little bitty students it would be amazing to have a note to tape up to the wall at home or held up by a magnet on the fridge. This would also expose the student to responsibility and how that works. They don't see their parent’s emails and phone but often want to actively be a part of the ownership of remembering their teddy bear for the letter T or their fruit for fruit salad day. “ “Sometimes the emails can be overwhelming when they are coming from teachers, administration, PTO, other committees, fundraising - maybe some of them could be done together or with links to news from the other parties.”
Communication What could St. Anne do to improve communication with your family/child? “Final Friday afternoon emails from the principal are informative but often overlooked due to the timing. Monday emails would be preferable. Additionally, some consistency in email addresses may be helpful in finding communications. It’s challenging to know whether a communication came from pto, teacher, principal, Danielle or class representative. If there was consistency in the naming to make it easier to search any school related emails, this could be helpful.” “Mandatory parent teacher conferences should come back. Monthly progress reports or every other week would be great to better understand what’s going on in classroom beyond just grades. When viewing RenWeb - it’s puzzling why there can multiple zeros for “class work”. Yes this ultimately student responsibility but it’s hard to tell if online or written class work is the issue.”
Communication What could St. Anne do to improve communication with your family/child? “I think the communication between school and parents is topnotch. I don't see any better way to keep parents in the know. St Anne does a tremendous job there. Between teachers and students, not really sure. Some teachers are not very approachable. Maybe more sensitivity training for all faculty and profiling how the students change from year to year might help. Thank you.” “More opportunities to walk your student in for drop off or pick up to let the teachers share information, we may need more in person conferences if that’s not an option to effectively communicate with the teachers. In our opinion, at no fault to the school, there have been a lot of things that have been missed because of the procedures of the last few years, and in order to hold our children accountable and work as a team we need those small moments to check in to convey quick things that don’t warrant an email but help us more effectively work together to support each other in our children’s educational journey.”
