Each of our academic areas provides analy tical tools for understanding how racial and ethnic categories form, why they matter, and how they are represented and reimagined.
CCSRE students learn that multiple lenses are needed to understand the complex dynamics of racism, identity, power, and knowledge.
Our majors and minors explore mechanisms for dismantling hierarchies and mobilizing knowledge in the creation of a more just and equitable world.

This prize is awarded for outstanding academic achievement, a demonstrated intellectual interest in Chicanx studies (broadly defined), a commitment to advancing opportunities for Chicanx students in higher education, and an interest in pursuing graduate studies.

2026 Awardee: Eric Martinez
The Award for Excellence in Honors Thesis Presentation is granted by departments and programs to students whose honors presentation exemplifies the highest standards. It is coordinated by the Oral Communication Program.

This award recognizes and honors the exceptional work of a graduating senior who integrates service to the community into their academic work. The award recognizes that what is learned in the classroom can provide the tools to work for a better world.
FIRESTONE MEDAL FOR EXCELLENCE IN UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH
2026 Awardees: Han Dao
The Firestone Medal is awarded to the top 10 percent of honors theses completed each year. The Firestone Medal for Excellence in Undergraduate Research recognizes theses written in the social sciences, natural sciences and engineering.

This award is presented to students whose honors thesis demonstrate the academic rigor and commitment to justice that George Fredrickson believed were necessary dimensions of scholarship.
MARGARITA IBARRA CSRE COMMUNITY BUILDING AWARD
2026 Awardee: Christine Hyunjee Kang
This award was established in 2011 in honor of Margarita Ibarra, who served as CSRE's Student Services Coordinator for 14 years. It is given to a student who best exemplifies Ibarra's commitment to building and sustaining a dynamic community for learning, support, and leadership.
